Oklahoma Meets Hollywood with New Dolby Atmos Sound Mixing Stage

Only one of three in the nation, the Dolby Atmos Sound Mixing Stage finds a home at Filmmakers Ranch.

The Dolby Atmos Sound Stage is a transformative technology that allows for an immersive three dimensional sound experience. In the Dolby Atmos studio room located at Filmmakers Ranch, speakers are installed corresponding to where certain sounds would come from during the film. Immersive technology like

this gives a sensation that leaves viewers feeling as if they are in the scene they are currently watching. Approximately 21 speakers are installed in total. It was first introduced in 2012. Since then, over 4,000 cinemas worldwide have adopted it. It is also used in video games.

As Filmmakers Ranch welcomes the Dolby Atmos Stage, a ripple of opportunities are created for filmmakers.

"I think what we're seeing here in Oklahoma right now is kind of a renaissance for film because we are seeing so many local storytellers

getting their voices out there," said Marcus Mallard, Professor of Film and Media and Program Coordinator for Film Studies and Digital Media.

Individuals now have access to high-grade equipment for their projects. Filmmakers Ranch is a cultivating environment for these storytellers.

Filmmakers Ranch was originally Green Pastures Elementary School until 2018. Co-founders Amy and her husband Richard Janes were searching all over the

Sample Ballots.” Locate the ballot with the election date 11/05/2024. Next, click “View Ballot” under the PDF or HTML section. The ballot will describe how to fill it in and various other elections that are taking place.

Decide When You Are Voting. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Please take into account classes, work and transportation at this time. If you are voting early, it begins on Thursday and

ends that Saturday. If you are voting in-person, Nov. 5 is on a Tuesday. All presidential elections are held on the first Tuesday in November. Prepare.

If there is one thing that I have learned about presidential elections, it is that the lines are long. I went with my mom during the 2020 election. The long line mixed with the cold weather made the experience a bit uncomfortable. Once the decision is made on when to vote, make the necessary preparations for it. Check the weather, eat before if necessary, bring a snack or drink if necessary and bring your state ID. Voter ID is required to vote. All elections are important. However, this presidential election seems to bear some significant weight. By following these four steps, voting will be easier and easier as time goes by.

Embracing the Unique Charm of Local Coffee Shops

The soothing sound of coffee grinding. The enticing aroma of freshly brewed coffee. The mouthwatering taste of assorted pastries. The lively buzz of conversations among customers in the coffee shop.

The ambiance of a coffee shop, particularly a local favorite you’ve been going to for some time, creates a truly special atmosphere. Some might even say it is the best place to be.

“The atmosphere is more different and better at a local coffee shop than a chain one,” said Sybil Beadles, a first-year student at Oklahoma State University.

In a world dominated by chain coffee shops, it is easy to forget the value of local, independently owned cafes. These small businesses offer much more than just

from Page 1

country for a place to open up a film studio. Eventually, they found the elementary school. Along the way, they met Melodie Garneau, another co-founder in Filmmakers Ranch. The school was bought in 2019 and renovations began. In 2020, they opened a fully operational film studio called Green Pastures Studio. They then rebranded and renamed it to Filmmakers Ranch. Individuals can create a multitude of projects with a diverse range of sets including a jail, police

coffee. They provide a unique atmosphere and a sense of community.

For locals, these cafes serve as meeting places where they may interact, converse and support one another. Local cafes create relationships with their customers, whether they are regulars who come in for their daily caffeine fixes or newcomers who are first drawn to the welcoming atmosphere. On top of that, baristas typically know their customers by name.

“Each local coffee shop is so unique to its environment and you don’t get to see that with chain coffee shops. You also get to build a more personal relationship with the workers there because there are smaller staff,” said Breigha Hughes, a barista at Perets Dessert & Coffee Bar and a third-year student at Rose State College. Chain stores find it hard to

station, hospital room, a section of a school, an apartment and a bar.

"Tulsa King," "Killers of the Flower Moon" and "Twisters" are all productions based in Oklahoma. The wave of success is imminent.

As the film industry expands, the diligent workforce behind it does as well. The creatives, the go-getters and the people who know people pull together to ensure these projects run smoothly.

Introducing Oklahoma to a booming Hollywood-based industry can be difficult. Nonetheless, Oklahoma is a state driven by success.

match the cozy, welcoming atmosphere created by this modest yet personal touch. Local cafes become places of human interaction rather than merely a location to get a drink because of a sense of familiarity and belonging.

“You get to romanticize studying and I feel like I can sit here for hours just studying,” Beadles said.

Supporting local coffee shops also supports neighborhood artists and business owners. Many of these cafes display artwork created by local artists, decorating their walls with pictures, paintings and other works that capture the essence of the community. These pieces of art frequently change, allowing various local artists to showcase their skills to a larger audience.

“We have people who come in here every day, we have people who come

"We're one of only three, so we're kind of elite in that area," said Dustin Wilson, Head of Studio Operations and Client Services.

While Filmmakers Ranch welcomes its new Dolby Atmos Stage, a ripple effect happens across the filmmaking community. Opportunities are created. As described by Mallard, introducing the Dolby Atmos Sound Stage cements the postproduction phase. Usually, projects are transported to Los Angeles or New York. The Dolby Atmos Stage assures that projects stay in Oklahoma throughout all phases of production.

once a month but if you can foster good connections, you can remember everyone by their order and not just their names,” Hughes said. These local businesses contribute significantly to the personality of communities by providing settings that are as distinctive as the people who own and operate them.

Additionally, local coffee shops frequently acquire their goods carefully, emphasizing sustainability and quality. Many collaborate with local suppliers to offer their clients freshly made products, such as ethically sourced coffee beans and baked pastries. This focus on community affects every aspect of the business, including how they purchase their goods and reach past the customers.

So the next time you're craving a cup of coffee, check out what your local

This is a cornerstone in filmmaking.

As much as the industry needs the crew, it also needs the equipment. "I think we have great crew here. We have talented actors here. I think we have all the equipment in the world any production would ever need here," Wilson said. NGP Film is of great thanks to that.

According to Blake Bullen, Assistant Office Manager, Inventory Manager and Outreach Coordinator, NGP Film was founded in 2011 by Nathan and his wife Angela Gardocki. The idea originated when the two were students and began renting walkie talkies. Over time, they acquired more equipment until they moved into an office space.

"Today, NGP Film is the largest film equipment rental house in the state of Oklahoma," Bullen said. NGP rents gear to every part of the state. In 2023, NGP moved to their current location inside Filmmakers Ranch. This move was made to create ease between filming there and needing the equipment to do it.

Although the film industry in Oklahoma garnered a few victories, that is not to say there are not any struggles. Creating

café has to offer instead of going to a chain. These independently owned cafés offer a unique experience, whether it's the thrilling discovery of a new treasure or the warm familiarity of your favorite local establishment. You might discover a new favorite spot where you can enjoy your community's friendship in addition to excellent coffee.

a flourishing industry is a hard task. Wilson described bringing in bigger projects is something Oklahoma struggles with.

"We're trying to solidify ourselves as a film state and that's something we need to continue to work on is being the best film state we can be with all the good, hard working Oklahoma workers we have," he said.

There is a lot that comes with creating a successful environment. But film has a way of bringing people together. Film and Media major Aleisha Brown was originally interested in theater. Her passion came from wanting to be in movies as a kid. Mallard's involvement came from an interest in entertainment along with taking a videography class. For Wilson, it was acting. Even as I have volunteered on the set of Mallard's short horror film, I see that among an expansive industry, there is a tight-knit group of inspiring individuals. Some who have their fair share of involvement in major projects. There is a shared success amongst everyone.

Differing aspects of an individual's accomplishments are truly acknowledged. Brown would name her biggest accomplishment as getting

an internship.

"The Francis Hughes internship here at Rose has helped me a lot in deciding what I want to do as a career," she said.

Mallard named one of his as co-writing and coproducing a horror film as well as being named one of the co-chairs for the horror studies at the National Popular Culture Association. Thus making him one of the area chairs. Wilson named one of his as playing a part in Killers of the Flower Moon.

"I got casted as BG then upgraded to Feature Background ... I got to meet Martin Scorsese ... I got to be there every day for 30 days just Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone," Wilson said. "It was great being a fly on the wall while doing some acting," he added. There is enough room for anything to be filmed in Oklahoma. "Sky’s the limit," Wilson said. Even the community is fascinated with projects that were filmed near their homes. Oklahoma is ready.

Armor Attack Open Beta: First Weeks

“The game will be structured around area denial, with teams colonizing locations and denying access with shorter weapon ranges.”
-Roman Marshev

On Oct. 10, indie development team KEK Entertainment launched Armor Attack, a mechbased shooter, into beta testing, inviting hundreds of its Discord followers to participate. Formerly known as TORN, Armor Attack has been in development for years, with its first posts emerging in late 2022. The game has attracted fans of similar mech games, notably War Robots and Mech Arena.

“We’re attracting players from different games–mainly War Robots. There’s more and more people coming from their

sector,” said Discord team member Wizardo.

Addressing similarities to War Robots, Wizardo emphasized that Armor Attack’s Empyrean faction was inspired by SpaceX, while other design elements emerged from the team's experience working on projects like Marvel and early PC gaming projects.

“In terms of design,” Wizardo added, “we have people who worked on many robotic designs, famous even before War Robots released.”

“We are making our own War Robots. Are we going to get in trouble by ‘copying’ their game design concepts? If you blatantly copy, you’re

inviting legal scrutiny, but there’s nothing wrong with inspiration. For example, we have a weapon named Orkan and haven’t had legal problems. As long as they don’t patent it, it’s okay,” Wizardo said.

To clarify, the Orkan is one of the most iconic weapons in War Robots, a high-capacity rocket launcher with splash capabilities. The Orkan, as it appears in Armor Attack, is also a highcapacity rocket launcher for the Hermit faction, but KEK Entertainment has introduced a homing function to the rockets launched from their Orkan.

Several team members were previously involved in War Robots development, such as Wizardo, who designed content from 2015 to 2019, including the "Korean dashers" and the Bulwark. “The Bulwark was kind of the end times for me,” he shared.

Roman Marshev (another team member who managed War Robots YouTubers in 2015) brings valuable industry insights. With no firm release date set, Armor Attack is slated to arrive on all major platforms with cross-play, which will help it compete against War Robots, a topgrossing game on mobile.

Marshev highlighted Armor Attack’s AI as a primary focus, describing the team’s data-driven approach. The team monitors player engagement and AI behavior in matches, making iterative updates to

enhance gameplay.

“We have a lot of effort planned to improve the AI,” Marshev said.

Planned updates also include a rework of all weapon ranges, and changes that aim to foster a close-combat style where players split up to control map areas.

Marshev elaborated, “The game will be structured around area denial, with teams colonizing locations and denying access with shorter weapon ranges.”

Despite Armor Attack's similarities to War Robots, it introduces several unique features. One notable addition is a reload button—a feature long requested by War Robots players but not implemented by Pixonic. In addition, Armor Attack’s graphics and mech designs resemble early War Robots renders from 2017–2019. This design choice may reflect the dev team's work history at Pixonic during that era. Unlike War Robots, Armor Attack utilizes procedural animations

for mech footfalls, giving movement a more realistic, grounded feel.

Armor Attack matches one player with AI-driven bots. Human players are frequently the only nonAI participant in 5v5 matches. This can lead to odd scenarios, such as one bot targeting the player exclusively while other bots overlook opponents.

YouTuber ManniGaming recently reviewed Armor Attack, featuring beginner mechs and noting that he purchased the subscription. While the game is free-to-play, developers start playtesters with over 9 million units of in-game currency, enough to purchase even the priciest equipment multiple times over. Subscription options provide limited benefits outside of supporting the developers, who have raised over $8 million for the game’s development.

The alpha version includes substantial resources for playtesting, whereas the open beta offers more limited resources, making the

prime subscription a more meaningful way to expedite progression than in the alpha.

Armor Attack also allows players to run identical setups—an option often criticized in War Robots, where the unbalanced meta encourage players to fill their hangars with multiple overpowered builds. By contrast, Armor Attack prioritizes balance rather than prohibiting duplicates. Armor Attack’s approach and distinctive features position it to potentially outpace War Robots in terms of player base and revenue. Thousands of War Robots fans have already joined Armor Attack’s Discord server, which now has nearly 14,000 members. Hundreds of these users display profile icons with content from Pixonic’s game. Currently, the only way to join the action is through the open beta on iOS or Google Play, while PC players can access the alpha version via Discord. An open beta for PC has yet to be announced.

A Door Away from Love: Reviewing Love Next Door Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Review

“Love Next Door” is a Korean drama that was just released this year. The romantic K-drama presents an enjoyable mix of humor and compassion, featuring endearing moments and lovable characters. The drama, which is set in a busy neighborhood, revolves around two characters who are totally opposite from each other. These two characters frequently cross paths as they are nextdoor neighbors. For fans of slow-burning romance, the series is a pleasant watch. This is because of the unusual amount of misunderstandings they have as well as the delayed romance. The show leans heavily on the attractiveness of the lead actors. The main actor is shown to be a rather traditional man who appears to be distant but is actually a lovely man. The female lead, on the other hand, is a lively and upbeat character who’s passionate about everything she does. Now, as they start to open up to one another, their chemistry develops naturally from silly little arguments to a stronger emotional connection.

The supporting cast of “Love Next Door” is one of the biggest draws. Every neighbor has their own distinct personality. This also makes the series more funny and entertaining. The stories they share give the neighborhood diversity and a feeling of being part of a unique setting. The story stands out for its outstanding character development and performance. Even though this series does not use as much narration as other dramas, they still manage to make the viewers understand the show through and through. Viewers can immerse themselves in the characters' emotional journeys without feeling hurried because of the pace. There are plenty of heartwarming moments, a little bit of comedy and a healthy amount of romance as well as character development. Overall, “Love Next Door” is a warm and endearing work that provides an enjoyable mixture of humor and romance. This makes it ideal for people who are seeking to watch a cozy and uplifting show.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was released Oct. 20, 2023, developed by Insomniac Games for PS5 and a PC release is slated for January 2025. I am a big SpiderMan fan. He is by far my favorite superhero ever since I was a kid. This game is very polarizing in the community. A lot of people hate it while a good amount love it. I like this game, but I have some complaints, mostly with the story. Those complaints make it very hard to like. If it was just bad overall I wouldn’t care as much but SpiderMan 2 has outstanding parts that I enjoy, making it so much worse by ruining the good parts and making me wish the developers had done things just a little differently. Overall, the gameplay is solid, it looks great, but has some questionable story decisions.

Web swinging in this game is just amazing. It feels great swinging around New York City at lightningquick speed. Spider-Man (2018) was considered to have the best web swinging of any Spider-Man game. Spider-Man 2 goes above and beyond, improving the lightning-fast tricks and adding new mechanics like the “Web Wings” that allow you to glide across New York City. SpiderMan 2 is the premiere Spider-Man experience.

The combat is satisfying; chaining combos and zipping from enemy to enemy is great. The new parry mechanic is fun and much appreciated. New abilities are added that let you do massive attacks dealing tons of damage to surrounding enemies. The standard combat is greatly improved, but virtually nothing has been added to the stealth side of combat. It's just easier to go in guns a blasting. There is no point in using stealth other than if the mission requires it. There's less focus than the last game and a lot of the best gadgets for stealth were taken out. The stealth missions in this game are just plain and boring. I

guess that’s okay since there are barely any.

The boss fights are a big improvement over the previous game. They are less gimmicky and lean into the standard combat. The first game’s fights seemed more like interactive puzzles, not an extension of the combat you use for the whole game. SpiderMan 2’s boss fights are expertly integrated with the combat putting the new parry and ability moves to good use.

The graphics are spectacular. The ray tracing and realistic lighting makes New York come to life. I do prefer Spider-Man Miles Morales’s graphics solely for the reason that it’s set during Christmas time and New York looks amazing in the snow. The new PS5 hardware is well utilized. There are more pedestrians, cars and little details all over the city. The city feels so much more vibrant and lived in. It’s not as crazy detailed and in-depth as Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), but it sure looks nice swinging by.

The load times are nonexistent in this game. Once you boot it up you're good to go. You can play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. Switching between them in-game is super fast, with no loading at all. You can fast-travel in the game and that has

some loading, but I never used it. I Had too much fun swinging around.

A big problem I have with the graphics is with the face models (actors who have had their faces scanned and then placed in-game). Peter Parker’s face model was changed from Spider-Man (2018) to the spinoff game SpiderMan Miles Morales (2020). Insomniac’s reason behind it was to match Yuri Lowenthal’s performance better (Peter Parker’s voice actor). I believe it was to make SpiderMan look younger and more like Tom Holland's version of Spider-Man. Peter is supposed to be 23 in the game and I really appreciated the older and more mature Spider-Man look. I just don’t like the change to the younger Spider-Man face. I have no idea what they did to Mary Jane’s model but it looks significantly worse. I think it’s from the new raytraced lighting engine. I do prefer the original lighting. The characters in the new engine look a little plasticky and surreal.

The story in this game is messier than SpiderMan 3. New York now has 2 Spider-Men protecting it, Peter and Miles. You play good chunks of the game as both, but Miles is put on the back burner here. Anything interesting with him is pushed to some side missions. Miles

is just underutilized and seems very absent from Peter’s portion of the story. Whenever he’s in it, he feels shoehorned in, which is sad since I really like Miles as a character. Kraven the Hunter is just a shell of what he could be. In this game, he uses his goons to catch and kill other villains to help him find the perfect opponent to kill him in battle. Why does Kraven have goons catching and killing all these villains? Why doesn’t Kraven hunt them? Isn't he supposed to be the greatest hunter? It is just ridiculous. The only reason he has his dumb little goons running around is for Spider-Man to beat them up in the game. I don’t want to reveal too much about the story surrounding the symbiote and Harry Osborne, but I'll say it could have been done a lot better. The third act was comically rushed and the pacing was all over the place. The game could have benefitted so much from a few more months in the game-making oven. This game has such good gameplay and it looks great. I just wish the story didn’t fall short of expectations. Overall, I would recommend it to any Spider-Man fan or someone who liked the first one. I didn’t love it but I enjoyed my time with it.

Since I’m currently waiting for three of my favorite bands to release albums in Dec. I’ll take this opportunity to talk about one of my favorite albums, “Gorgeous George.” The album was released on July 1, 1994 and is the third studio album by Edwyn Collins.

Though the album is categorized as alternative and indie, it’s certainly rock adjacent and even has a traditional pop sound at times.

The first track is “The Campaign For Real Rock,” and what an opening. It might be getting ahead of myself to say this is my favorite track of the album, but I don’t care. The campaign for real rock is slow and abrasive. It’s noisy, but in a singular and deliberate way.

It starts out quiet but builds to a more challenging tone. The song serves as an effective commentary on popular rock music of the time and the homogeneous “counter-culture” image that flooded the rock scene in the early nineties. It has an overbearing quality that makes me think of the harsh and unwavering summer sun. The song is six and a half minutes long, but it pulls it off.

For some reason, musicians seem afraid to make a song longer than two and a half minutes. A truly good song can make it six minutes without overstaying its welcome. The only critique I have is the closing part. The tone shifts and two lyrics repeat for over a minute. It comes across as indifferent. The ending isn’t bad, I just think a different approach would have worked better. It’s omitted from the only live version of the song I’ve heard, which I think is the right call.

It’s the only song like it on the album, I’d like to see a whole album like it. Fortunately, the rest of the album is still good, even if it takes a different direction.

Next up is “A Girl Like

Gorgeous George is Still Timeless

You.” If you’ve heard anything by Edwyn Collins, you’ve probably heard “A Girl Like You.”

It’s a great song in its own right, but it’s not as meaningful as “The Campaign For Real Rock.”

Some of the instrumental arrangement keeps the same tone, but it’s a more conventionally enjoyable composition. The more abrasive elements are less present as well.

“A Girl Like You’ is a lot more upbeat than the first track. The electronic elements are less abrasive but still have a unique sound. It’s certainly more “pop” than “The Campaign For Real Rock.” It’s a great track but it’s not as challenging as the first track.

“Low Expectations” is a solid track. It’s a much more calm song than the first two tracks and It’s more folksy than rock, but it’s pleasant enough. “Out Of This World” is great. It doesn’t have the same depth as “The Campaign For Real Rock.” It's more interesting than “A Girl Like You” in my opinion. It has a definite cinematic quality with a hint of

traditional pop.

“If You Could Love Me” is the fifth track on the album. It’s a pretty good song, but it’s not especially remarkable. It has a slow pace and generic subject matter. There’s a hint of traditional pop. “North Of Heaven” is solid. It takes a dig at “Guns ‘N Roses” which I appreciate. This is also the only track to use any explicit language. That’s really the most remarkable thing about the song. It has an oldfashioned sound that I don’t find very interesting.

“Gorgeous George” despite being the title track, is not particularly remarkable. It’s very much in the same vein as “North Of Heaven” but it’s a little more vibrant and interesting. It’s certainly not bad though, I’d even say it’s kind of good. “It’s Right In Front Of You” stands out instrumentally. It has an odd electronic sound but vocally it fits in with the slightly traditional pop style vocal delivery.

“Make Me Feel Again” is like a less energetic combination of early rock and roll and folk music. There’s still a hint of

traditional pop of course. It’s an enjoyable song and I like it quite a bit. The next track is “I’ve Got It Bad.” It has a sort of rock/folk sound that has an undeniable charm. It’s solid, good even.

“Subsidence” has a much calmer tone than most of the songs on this album. It has an old hymn quality that’s nice to listen to. It’s not an amazing song but it has enough vibrancy to make

for a solid track. “Moron” is similar to “Gorgeous George” but more wistful at times and with its own flourishes that set it apart. It’s an interesting track and a solid enough end for the album.

Technically “Moron” is a bonus track, but with spotify there’s really no such thing anymore. I didn’t even realize it was a bonus track until buying a physical copy of the album and noticing it wasn’t listed, though it is present.

Overall I like this album. There’s not a bad track on it, which makes it an easy listen. The highlights are truly what sets the album apart. My top 3 tracks from this album are “The Campaign For Real Rock,” “Out Of This World” and “A Girl Like You,” in that order. And I might as well give “Make Me Feel Again” an honorable mention. Even the weakest songs have an undeniable charm. There’s enough variety and vibrancy to keep the album interesting. There’s really no reason not to check it out. This album is an easy recommendation from me.
