Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable!

We’re here with Steve Neal, one of our staff members at Christ Church Dunstable (CCD). We wanted to take some time getting to know him a bit better.

Steve, tell us about yourself:

Hi everyone, I’m Steve. I’m Welsh, and married to a wonderful Dutch lady, and I am biased in saying we have three beautiful children. We have lived in Dunstable for about 4 and a half years, having previously worked with churches in Europe. We love it here. I am a governor at my children’s school, I am involved with an International Outreach organisation, and I serve full-time at Christ Church Dunstable as ‘Pastor to the Community’.

What is a ‘Pastor to the Community’?

The name describes it really. A pastor is someone who looks after people (our word pastor comes from the Latin word for shepherd). In churches it is quite normal to find pastors who look after their congregations, but we as a church believe that God has called us not just to look after our own church family, but to seek to care for those in the community around us and to share with them the message of hope that Jesus brings.

What does that look like? How does your church look to care for the wider community?

We try to do this in a variety of ways. Much of our community activity happens in our Christian community centre, called The Way, found on West Street. From this centre, we have things happening all the time and we try to help people in a variety of ways. Some of them practical, for example, we partner with

Dunstable Foodbank and host the foodbank twice a week seeking to support those who need it. Other ways are social: throughout term times we run a wide variety of community groups: Toddlers, Patchwork & Quilting, Art Group, Cabin Fever (a DIY group), Connect (for over 60s), English Classes, Knit and Natter...the list goes on.

These will be starting again in September, but The Way Coffee House is open Mon-Fri for anyone wanting to pop in to say “Hello!”

Why do you think these groups are important and beneficial to the people of Dunstable?

Having spoken to hundreds of people in Dunstable, I believe that the greatest challenges our community faces is that of loneliness. We live in a world that is more connected than ever with social media etc. but it’s a world that is starved of meaningful connection. Where do you go if you need someone to talk to? Or having a hard time? Or need a break from things for a while? Where can you go to hear some good news or to receive hope? Answer: Christ Church Dunstable and The Way! Creating space for people to come together has been life-changing for so many coming in as they make friends over coffee, or a sketch pad. They’ve heard the life-changing true story of Jesus as well through a thought for the week, or a church service.

Who is welcome in the Way and CCD?

I can confidently say that everyone is welcome at any of our groups whatever the background. We love to open the doors of The Way and the church and meet new people to share our time, our interests, our lives, our faith, and our hope with them. We want to see true and real relationships made with other people and a reunited relationship between God and his created people whom he loves.

Despite a rather showery day Dunstable was blooming brightly when the Anglia in Bloom judges visited the town on 12th July. After a welcome at Grove House with a video and displays they met the Town rangers and viewed some of the entries in our Wheelie Fantastic competition. They were accompanied by Sarah Woodruff of Dunstable in Bloom and John Crawley, Head of Grounds & Environmental Services on DTC. During a busy morning they visited many of the varied habitats within the town’s boundaries. The urban centre although crowded with traffic is attractively decorated with planters & tubs. There are two lovely spaces easily accessible - Grove House gardens and Priory gardens, both with Green flags. They saw a complete contrast at Blow’s Downs with the chalk hills and hay meadow and busway cycle path lined with a profusion of wild flowers. They spent time at Mentmore Recreation Ground another natural area - more trees were planted last year and interesting wild flowers including orchids are growing; the pupils at St Augustine’s Primary School were a delight and keen to show them their mini forest now in its second year. Many other projects and volunteer groups were included who are ‘Growing their Own’ vegetables & flowers - Priory View; Incredible Edible site at Kath-

They were very interested in the Rain Garden bed in St Mary’s Gate and the flood relief project which has been created in the town. The new evergreen planting at the Methodist Church was admired and in the Square they met the brilliant litter pickers, Dunstable Wombles, and were introduced to the Men in Sheds group. Finally to Priory Gardens, the bedding a bright tapestry of flowers and included a tour of our unique historical Medieval Physic Garden – a mini version of one that would have provided medicinal & culinary herbs for the Priory in 12th century. A well- deserved lunch & thanks followed in Priory Church. We hope they enjoyed their visit and appreciated the hard work done mainly by volunteers. We all benefit as, whether young or old, active or not, there is somewhere in the town for everyone to enjoy the fresh air and beauty of nature. An added bonus would be to gain another Gold medal! Dunstable Town Guide and regular contributor to The Vine, Paul Heley, has written a book about his early life growing up in Totternhoe and Dunstable.

Paul can trace his family tree back at least ten generations all living in the Village of Totternhoe. It is where he also lived for the first part of his life and has always been an important part of who he is. Just before the war, his father took a grocery business in Dunstable and from there, he was fortunate enough to attend Dunstable Grammar School. An Or’nary Sort Of Boy is the story of a Dunstable and Totternhoe boyhood from 1934-1949. The story is in two parts: the first of which could be regarded as a brief social history describing the time and practices in a rural and semi rural setting 80+ years ago - a time never to return. Many of the material benefits taken for granted today were unheard of then, and the domestic conditions seem primitive by 21st century standards. The story also describes a boyhood during WW2 and the negative effect of having a mother trying to run a business and a father away in the Army. The second part deals with the fulfilment of a boyhood dream of going to sea - albeit short lived - followed by National Service in the RAF; two extremely valuable years which, unknowingly, led to a successful career as a college and university lecturer. During these diverse experiences there was also time to engage in motorcycling, playing rugby, playing jazz, and finding the girl who has been his wife for the last 64 years. Paperback (£16.99) and Kindle (£3.00) editions of An Or’nary Sort Of Boy are available on Amazon.co.uk

Amateur Theatre Group Looking For New Talent

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to tread the boards in an amateur dramatic production, but never quite got around to it? Maybe you love to sing and enjoy being one of an ensemble, belting out a Broadway tune? Perhaps you enjoy art and design, or would like to try learning about stage management or sound, lighting or choreography? Then TADS Theatre Group, based in a characterful 74-seat theatre down a picturesque lane in Toddington, is for you. TADS was formed in 1961 and offers a varied programme of drama, comedy and musicals. TADS is friendly and inclusive, with the focus on encouraging and developing talents, wherever they may lie. Whether it is delivering one line, designing and painting a backdrop or going full pantomime dame, there is something for everyone who has an interest in live theatre and most of all, in having fun along the way. We have a junior group, TADS Teens, for young performers age 9 and upwards. In July the Teens performed The Phantom of the Talent Factor, a mash-up of Phantom of the Opera and The X Factor, with great enthusiasm, humour and aplomb.

TADS theatre, acquired by the group in 1992, was once a church hall and if you look closely on one side of the building, you can still see where a church window was bricked in to keep out the light. The theatre offers tiered seating for 74, full lighting and sound facilities and its own licensed bar. When not in use for their own productions, TADS are privileged to hire out the space to other amateur dramatics groups, musicians and performers.

TADS’ role in the community is very important to the organisation. The group organises fundraisers like ‘Christmas at the Oddies’ (the Oddfellows pub), for charities such as The Singing Café and East of England Air Ambulance. During the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the theatre opened its doors to the public for a series of royal-themed activities.Plans are now afoot to join the Toddington Scarecrow Festival on the 28th August.

After a busy 12 months which has included NODA award-nominated The Railway Children, TADS is looking forward to future projects. September sees our production of Broadway Through the Ages, an affectionate ensemble tribute to the musical, featuring many well-known showtunes and somelesser-known gems. There will be glamour, sparkle and high kicks.

In December we welcome the TADS panto, Aladdin, complete with a fabulous Widow Twankey, heinous villain Abanazar and two genies for the price of one. TADS pantos are always a fun (and funny) way to start the Christmas season, so don’t miss out.

Tickets for both shows are available online now at: www.tadstheatre.org/about-tads/theatre-information/238-ticket-shop

TADS’ focus is on accessible entertainment for all, keeping prices as low as possible. TADS’ annual membership is £20 (concessions £10) and TADS Teens is £10, plus weekly subs. If you would like to give am-dram a try, we’d be delighted to welcome you to the TADS family Please do contact us for more information.

The coming of the Romans

As intimated in my last article, the seeds of including Brittania (then called Pretania) into the Roman empire had been sown by Julius Caesar and in AD43, Emperor Claudius landed with a huge army of 40000+ men determined to conquer the various squabbling tribes distributed through the land as mini kingdoms. Conquest was comparatively easy. There was no concerted resistance - the tribes defended their own territories and didn’t really join forces so were picked off one at a time. But the Romans hadn’t seen chariot warfare before and this threw them for a time. A Roman description reads thus :-

“In chariot fighting, the Britons begin by driving all over the field hurling javelins; and generally the terror inspired by the horses and the noise of the wheels are sufficient to throw their opponents’ ranks into disorder. Then, after making their way between the squadrons of their own cavalry, they jump down from the chariots and engage on foot: thus they combine the mobility of cavalry with the staying power of infantry. But as charioteers - even on a steep incline - they are able to control the horses at full gallop and to check and turn them in a moment. They can run along the chariot pole, stand on the yoke, and get back into the chariot

as quick as lightning.”

But even with this “new weapon”, the Romans won the day with their superior weaponry and military discipline and, this time, the local Catuvellauni were defeated at Ravensburgh – a hill fort near Hexton.

To start with, the Romans were harsh rulers. A quote says “They were an invading force whose jackboots stamped down atop everything else”. The Britons became vassals and it was a case of submit or be severely punished. Even so, the British tribes did not capitulate totally and immediately - there was considerable guerilla warfare for some time after AD43 - even though the Romans attempted to placate local chiefs (or “kings”) with offers of special privileges and promises to leave the tribe in peace if the chief could guarantee good behaviour. This arrangement worked tolerably well for much of the time but didn’t always go to plan and, in general, the Romans shot first and asked questions afterwards. For example, they were determined to eradicate the Druids who had considerable influence over the native Celts; and in order to keep the locals under total control, they worked them, when required, as virtual slaves - even though allowing them to live a traditional life style provided they behaved themselves. Food was their reward. It was a “carrot and stick” arrangement.

There was, however, a terrible cultural clash and, again, starting with the tribal leaders, the Romans tried to “educate” the Britons into less primitive ways and as time went on and relations became less strained so many of the British adopted Roman ways and manners, learnt Latin, and eventually became the Romano-British elite of later periods.

But very quickly after their conquest, the Romans realised that in order to be able to move men and equipment as quickly as possible to a potential trouble spot, they needed roads. Perhaps the first to be built was the Via Vitellina (now known as Watling Street) which ran from Dubris

(Dover) through Londinium and Verulamium (St Albans) to Deva (Chester).

This road crossed the ancient Icknield Way (which the Romans called Via Icenorum - the road to the Iceni) and at this place, they set up a staging post called Durocobrivis

Eventually a complete road system of 7 major roads and a number of minor roads was constructed covering most of the country under Roman control.

NB For people in present day Dunstable, Durocobrivis was the first town on our crossroads.

The Romans created such staging posts along these roads separated by distances equivalent to a day’s march: anything between 10 and 15 present day miles dependent upon logistics and terrain. The staging posts out of Londinium were Sulloniacis (near Elstree), Verulamium (St. Albans), Durocobrivis (Dunstable), Magiovinium (Fenny Stratford), Lactodorum (Towcester) and so on.

Watling Street R5

NB The standard distance for marching was the mille ie 1000 double paces of a typical Roman foot soldier. This has come down to us as the Mile but was, in fact, slightly less than today’s mile being something like 1620 yards or 1500 metres. But what does Durocobrivis mean, and what was this little settlement like?

Tiny TRAVELLERS

Holidays with children don’t have to be a drag – try to follow these tips to relieve the travel tedium.

1. Plan ahead

Before you travel, research your destination to find out what activities are available for kids, where you can access child-friendly restaurants, and what amenities are available for families.

2. Pack wisely

When packing for a family trip, make sure to bring along all the essentials such as nappies, wipes, medicine and extra clothes. Pack snacks and drinks, plus games, books, tablets and toys for long waits or flights.

3. Choose kid-friendly accommodations

When deciding where to stay, look for hotels or resorts that offer childfriendly areas such as kids’ clubs, pools, and playgrounds.

4. Involve your kids in the planning process

Let your little ones in on the planning process by encouraging them to choose some of the activities or destinations you will visit.

5. Be flexible

Travelling can be unpredictable at the best of times, and doubly so

when children are involved, so it’s important to be flexible and willing to change your plans if needed.

6. Take breaks

Be sure to take breaks throughout the day to give your kids a chance to rest and recharge. This will help prevent meltdowns and ensure that everyone stays in good spirits.

7. Enjoy the ride

Travelling with kids can be stressful, but it can also be a lot of fun. Remember to take time to enjoy the experience and make memories with your family. With a little planning and preparation, you can have a successful and enjoyable trip with your kids.

BRILLIANCE

Five ways to bring the eclectic elegance of Bohemia into your home.

1. Apply diplomatic décor

The best bohemian homes pull in a tapestry of differing styles from around the world, marrying them up together in an almost diplomatic appreciation of cultures and discovery.

From the finesse and fabrics of Asia to the colours and contrast of Africa, whether it’s carpets, wall covering, antiques or artefacts, boho embraces it all.

And remember, even a boring, modern sofa can be ‘made boho’ by the clever addition of blankets, pillows and cushions; while woven baskets and rugs will give wider expansion of a look across an entire room.

2. Think vintage

Another big contributor to the boho appearance is in its appreciation of vintage, and the promotion of objects and articles from the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

That’s not to say you can’t bring newer elements into your design – more, you are looking

to create a jigsaw puzzle of emotions and memories wrapped in elegance and style. To say the angle is ‘casual but chic’ is to hit the boho note on the head, though the delivery of that is largely subjective to who you are and what you like.

3. Being maximalist

One key facet of modern boho is to choose maximalist patterns, colours and designs, yet be careful not to stray into a realm of clutter. Boho insists on order and organisation, albeit in a way that is rich in detail and design. Ultimately, you are looking to marry up objects –lamps, books, pictures, clocks and more – that demonstrate the ability to pitch contrasting things together.

4. Be artistic While so many other elements combine to create a chic and showpiece feel of boho, ultimately it’s difficult to achieve the style without a focus on art. That could mean one large centrepiece or a wall of framed art, shaped by lamps, curtains or drapes; but let the pictures inform the feeling of the room and the cultures, and eras, you want to celebrate.

5. Be experimental

Finally, because there is no definite blueprint for modern boho, while the space may remain the same, objects and patterns can change over time. Perhaps use cushions and pillows piled up on the floor to detract from the ugly modernity of a television or computer; maybe stack up books in a corner instead of putting them on shelves; and why not arrange gorgerously framed pictures like you would vinyl in a record shop?

Every angle is yours to explore en route to a buoyant boho setting that is as chic as it is homely.

Green ngers… the Alan Titchmarsh column

He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist, and allround horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses the maintenance of pathways and walkways in our gardens.

It’s only right we spend so long obsessing over the green spaces in our garden, and at the heart of that is plants, flowers and, of course, a gorgeous, lush, green lawn.

Yet there is many a beautiful baize spoiled by the constant plodding of human feet, and when the colder, rainier months come around, that gentle path leading to the shed can rapidly come to resemble a muddy mess.

That’s why providing a practical route for people to be able move through a garden is so important. Paths and walkways obviously serve a practical function in providing safe and easy access to the decorated corners of your garden, whilst

also offering a visual and aesthetic element, guiding the eye, offering a contrast between natural and manmade materials, whilst creating, as well, an invitation to explore.

Maintaining a pathway, or perhaps even a larger paved area, almost always means turning to concrete. It is hardwearing, inexpensive and versatile, while in terms of durability you’ll struggle to find anything better. Yet for those who want a look that’s more natural or rustic, use something like gravel, wood or natural stone. These materials can create a softer, more organic look that blends in well with the surrounding landscape.

Either way, focus on colour and texture. Look at the other shades in your garden and try to match tones; also mimic shapes in flowers and plants by selecting concrete elements that are styled and intricately designed, focusing on curves, lines and detail.

In terms of laying a path, plan every stone before you start, aiming for flow, perspective and a pattern that guides the eye. Ensure the ground you are laying the path on is well drained, and while the temptation is to lay each slab level, you may want to factor in a slight tilt so that rainwater runs off it rather than pooling on top.

Finally, when laid, gravel or mulch around the sides of the path will hold it in place and allow it to soften as it naturalises with your garden.

As the years go by, regular cleaning and repairs will keep your path in optimum condition. Jet washing is a great way of bringing it back to life.

Ultimately, while concrete often carries with it an unsteady reputation as far as our gardens are concerned, we’d be stuck without it!

Home workout or gym workout – what works best for you?

The popularity of the home gym is definitely on the rise, boosted by affordable equipment and a range of exercise tools that accurately track performance. From sales of Peloton bikes to fitness mirrors and multi-routine subscriptions, every type of exercise is now at our fingertips. Meanwhile, at the same time, gym memberships are also increasing.

It all points to an overall tendency across the nation to prioritise physical health; so if you’re caught in two minds as to whether home activity or traditional gym workouts suit you best (or whether perhaps to split your efforts across the two), here’s some guidance below:

Home workouts: The

benefits

1. Convenience: One of the biggest advantages of home workouts is convenience. You can exercise whenever you want, without having to adhere to gym hours. You also needn’t worry about losing time travelling to and from your workout space!

2. Flexibility: When working out at home, you have the flexibility to choose your own workout routine and equipment. You can tailor workouts to your own needs, preferences and fitness goals, never having to wait to get on the treadmill!

3. Comfort: Working out at home can be more comfortable than in a traditional gym. Wear what you want, listen to your own music, and relax in your own environment.

4. Privacy: Many people prefer working out at home because they feel more comfortable and less self-conscious about their body and fitness levels.

5. Cost: Gym memberships can be expensive, yet once you’ve invested in your home gym equipment, it’s yours for life!

Gym workouts: The benefits

1. Range of equipment: While working out at home can be convenient, you may not have access to the same variety of equipment and machines as you would in a traditional gym, which caters across the range of strength training, cardio and fat-burning.

2. Motivation: The social atmosphere of a gym and the motivational skills of a personal trainer can be vital in providing impetus, consistency and longevity for your workouts.

3. Space: Depending on your living situation, you may not have enough space at home to perform certain exercises or use larger equipment. In a gym, no such boundaries exist.

4. Focus: When working out at home, it can be easy to find yourself distracted by work, family and even pets. In contrast, the structured environment of a gym can help establish a routine and provide accountability for sticking to a regular workout schedule.

5. Social atmosphere: Finally, going to the gym provides an excellent opportunity to socialise, whilst soaking up new influences and ideas.

The 60th Anniversary of the Great Train Robbery

Looking back 60 years ago this month, to when a gang of 15 criminals stole £2.6million in bank notes from a Royal Mail railway service.

On August 8, 1963, every major news agency in every major city around the world was preparing to report on events that took place at the Bridego railway bridge in leafy Ledburn, Buckinghamshire, as a group of 15 robbers, led by Bruce Reynolds, robbed the Royal Mail train bound for London.

The gang had planned the heist meticulously - the robbery itself lasting for around 15 minutes and saw £2.6million in cash taken (equivalent to around £50million today). While the getaway was clean, police quickly launched a massive investigation, and many of the robbers were eventually caught (three evaded capture completely) and sentenced to long prison terms.

The Great Train Robbery was one of the most daring and audacious heists of the 20th century and has continued to capture the public’s interest for decades, so much so that it has been the subject of numerous books, films, and documentaries.

Ronald ‘Buster’ Edwards managed to escape with a share of the loot and after a spell in Mexico returned to the UK and settled in London. However, he was eventually arrested and charged with conspiring to rob another bank, and sentenced to 15 years in prison. His life was documented in the 1988 film Buster, in which he was played by Phil Collins – the story seen as a nod to the allure and the eventual downfall of criminal life.

Nine of the 15 criminals were arrested in South London three weeks after the robbery and were subsequently found guilty - most sentenced to 30 years in prison. Ronnie Biggs, however, escaped from prison in 1965, had plastic surgery and spent many years on the run, eventually ending up in Brazil.

In 2001, he returned to the UK voluntarily and was arrested, serving several years in prison before being released on compassionate grounds.

The legacy from the heist had huge repercussions. Royal Mail were forced to significantly upgrade its security measures, while the depth of the investigation into the robbery led to a need for greater complexity in policework, welcoming in a generation that began to embrace methods such as fingerprinting and, nowadays, the ability to solve crime using CCTV – of which there was none in the case of the Great Train Robbery despite its gradual introduction in commercial settings – and forensic techniques, including DNA testing.

Two Cityscapes

Divide an A4 sheet of watercolour paper into two (portrait). Now, draw in pencil two long oblong frames for your two images next to each other. In pencil carefully and lightly, copy each image using a continuous line were you hardly take your pencil off the paper. Its best to start in the middle so you don’t run out of space for your buildings. Once you are happy with your drawings you can start drawing over the top of your sketch using a black permanent fine liner pen. Keep the pen loose and the continuous lines. When the pen dries you can add your yellow watercolour paint to finish it off. You might draw over your frame in pen or just rub out the oblong shape you did in pencil. These images were one full image so you can see how you can divide any image up for fun. The next 12-week art course begins Wed 27th September. Bedfordshire’s Night Sky Looking Up!

August & September 2023

Catch Saturn at its closest to Earth for 2023: 27 August this year sees Saturn at opposition. This is when the ringed planet is directly opposite the sun from our earthbound viewpoint, and so the distance between Earth and Saturn is at its smallest. That gap is still a whopping 1310 million kms, the reflected sunlight off Saturn still taking 1 hour and 12 minutes to reach us. Even though that’s still a big distance away you can catch Saturn with the unaided eye. On the 27th you’ll find the ringed planet low in the south-east at nightfall as a bright star-like object with a yellow hue. By 1am Saturn is directly south about 26 degrees above the horizon.

Watch the Perseids Meteor Shower: August sees the return of the Perseids meteor shower. Peak nights are 11 - 13 August when you can see upwards of 50 shooting stars per hour from 10pm until 4am each night. This is an all-sky event, so shooting stars from the Perseids can be spotted anywhere in the night sky. If you trace their trajectory backwards you’ll find that they appear to radiate from near the ‘W’ constellation of Cassiopeia.

Spot the Milky Way from the Chilterns: August and September are a great time to spot the Milky Way overhead from the Chilterns. You’ll need a time of night when there is no moon in the sky. Best opportunities are 13 - 21 August and 11 - 20 September once it gets dark.
