I am Mabel the resident dog at Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels in Eaton Bray.
Appledown Rescue Dog of the Month

This alert little lad is Kian Egan a lurcher aged 5. Life had not been easy for him before he came to us, used as a working dog he had known little of affection or attention and he bears kennels he is where humans are your friends and he is gradually coming out of his shell. Kian’s former life has left him with a high prey drive and he will always need on-lead walks. He could probably live with a female dog pending introductions, but definitely not cats or other small pets. He will need patient owners who will help him adjust household pet.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “By doing this we make the customer considerable savings and there is much less upheaval in the family home. Also, whether communities find themselves in a financial crisis or not, saving money when you don’t need to waste it is always the sensible option, and our service does just that”.

As we near the end of 2025, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the year Hospice at Home Volunteers has had. It’s been a varied year, with our volunteers keeping busy with clients and their carers. We’ve supported over 60 different families this year, offering our time, companionship, and friendship through our volunteer visits. Our trained volunteers alone have invested over 1750 volunteering hours in our clients, and if we add in the work of our trustees, it would reach over 3000 hours. We’ve spent time talking, listening, and supporting our clients. We’ve even gone out for coffee and a slice of cake to their favourite places. Dunstable Downs remains a favourite in better weather, where we sit and overlook the Gliding Club, reminiscing about old times. Our trustees have done a great job in bringing the business plan to fruition. They’ve developed a strategy that allows for growth, financial security for the next two years, and an expansion into the community.
This year, we’ve had a variety of events, including a wonderful concert in the Priory Church in March, a quiz night at the Gliding Club in May, a Golf Day in September, and a Decades Night at Vantage in October. We’ve made new friends and acquaintances, and we’ve been sponsored by local businesses at some of our events, which has not only helped with fundraising but also helped with marketing our services across the community.

If you or someone you know has a life-limiting illness, please get in touch with us to see how we can support you or them through this difficult stage of life.
Our Volunteer Manager, Maureen, is keen to hear from you, please email hello@hospiceathomevolunteers.co.uk or call her on 07709131514.

Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram, or via our website www.hospiceathomevolunteers.co.uk/

We continue to look for more opportunities as we enter our 40th anniversary in 2026. We have volunteers ready to support you and your family members.

The story starts in the days of “Bad” King John, ie in the early 1200s when John was getting up everybody’s nose with excessive taxation, unreliability, reneging on agreements, enforcement of “royal powers of inheritance” (whereby he could totally control an estate left to a minor and could sell off its chattels - including the widow and any daughters!). Also, he was hopeless as a warrior and was losing much of the land his father (Henry 2nd) had earlier acquired in France. All in all, he was a disaster and his nobility - the “barons” - were in a state of near civil war against him. But in 1206, John had secured the services of a mercenary French thug called Faulkes de Breaute whose hobby was maiming and killing people. Nice man! John brought him to England, gave him a knighthood and put him in charge of his army. He was soon put to work quashing uprisings here, there, and everywhere for which he was generously rewarded with positions of considerable power, eg in South Wales, the Welsh Marches and East Anglia.

by many sections in England who were both sick to death with John and not too enamoured with the barons either. So after Louis landed with his army, there were now three armies all fighting each otherJohn’s, the Barons’, and Louis’s. What a shambles!

He went on to sack Bedford Castle and imprison its owner after which he was made “Keeper” of Bedford Castle. Bedfordshire now joined S. Wales in feeling the full force of Faulkes’ violence. However, and after much vacillation on John’s part, the barons finally forced the king to seal the Magna Carta in June, 1215. But, typically, and with help from the Pope, John immediately reneged on all the agreements made. Following this fiasco, the Pope suggested to Prince Louis (son of the King of France) that he should invade England take the crown. It must be admitted that this idea was welcomed
It was particularly dangerous for Dunstable as different armies would pass through the town demanding food and provisions at the point of a sword. And young men could also be press ganged into whichever army happened to be doing the “pressing” !
Faulkes now became very busy and increasingly powerful. In recognition of various victories against both Louis and the Barons, Faulkes acquired the Isle of Wight, the Lordship of the Manor of Luton, and High Sheriff of both Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. He was now the most powerful man in the area and the people of this area could now wish that they had never heard of Faulkes de Breaute.
During October 1216, John tried to outsmart Louis and get to Lincoln first but his plan backfired in the Wash. Having retreated to Newark, he stuffed himself silly on “an excess of peaches and new cider” and died of dysentry. So Louis got to Lincoln first and not too many tears were shed.

By Paul Heley
John was succeeded by his 9 year old son who became Henry 3rd; and Faulkes was a member of the Council advising the boy king. However, he continued to fight for the king as he had for John so was still active; and during 1217 he attacked St Albans committing terrible atrocities. Later, he sieged Lincoln Castle - Louis was still there - and upon its surrender, Louis was allowed to return home. Nobody wanted all out war with France - but Louis’s quest for the crown was ended. In reward, Faulkes was made High Sheriff of Northamptonshire, Rutland, Cambridgeshire and Oxfordshire in addition to Beds and Bucks. And then he added Justice of the Peace for the whole of East Anglia to his list. He felt invincible and untouchable. However, the Chief Justicier felt that Faulkes was much too big for his boots; but also realised he’d got to wait for the right moment before he could act. Watch this space! During 1217, Faulkes built himself a large house in south London called Faulkes’s Hall. The name gradually changed to Faux Hall and the area around became Vauxhall. And in 1905, the Vauxhall Engineering Company came to Luton to make motor cars - a form of homecoming! It’s interesting that Vauxhall’s car badge with its griffon was the personal emblem chosen by Faulkes 800 years earlier.
By 1218/19, things had changed :John had gone; Louis had gone; Magna Carta had been reissued and the barons were happy. Peace at last. No more fighting. So was Faulkes out of a job? But leopards can’t change their spots and he simply increased his terrorism within Bedfordshire. He became a local war lord and built himself a motte and bailey castle in Luton (where the University of Bedfordshire now stands). From here, he ran amok over the whole area (according to the Annals of Dunstable Priory). The people of Luton and Dunstable were terrified of him and appealed to the king’s justices where the Chief Justicier now saw his big chance. In 1223 Faulkes was twice summoned to appear at Bedford Assizes but he refused both times. Then King Henry 3rd, now 17 years old, ordered Faulkes to appear at Dunstable Priory; but Faulkes fled to an old buddy’s instead leaving Bedford Castle in the care of his brother William.

In his absence, Faulkes was found guilty of 35 crimes each carrying a fine of £100 and prompting the king to order a siege on the castle. Slowly, the required siege equipment was assembled and, as a mark of the particular hardship suffered by Dunstable under Faulkes, the “men of Dunstable” were given the honour of leading the first assault. No doubt they all cried “Whoopee, what fun”!

The siege lasted 8 weeks; and after 4 increasingly destructive assaultsnot forgetting the effect of starvation - the castle surrendered. All women, children and prisoners were freed but the king ordered the immediate hanging of William de Breaute and more than 80 of his male defenders. No mercy was shown.
Faulkes realised that the game was up and surrendered. But - and now showing mercy - Henry spared Faulkes’s life because of the devoted service he had shown his father, John, and also himself when younger. But Faulkes was stripped of all his castles, lands, offices, and possessions; and he was outlawed. Rather stupidly he chose exile in France - where Louis, now king, was waiting for him! But amazingly, the Pope ordered Faulkes’ releasewhy? - and invited him for an audience in Rome. Here Faulkes admitted he’d been a naughty boy and promised to go on crusade in order to absolve all his sins. But before he could fulfil this promise, he died from poisoned fish (an accident?) at St Ciriac in southern France.
Thus ended the story of a particularly nasty piece of work who had caused terror, mutilation, death and destruction amongst the people of Bedfordshire almost 800 years ago.

How to use the fruits from your garden to decorate your home this Christmas.
Forget plastic trees, ornaments and swathes of tinsel, this Christmas why not utilise the natural world to create some real magic in your home?
You may be sceptical, but wreaths, garlands and table decorations crafted using foraged greenery and garden finds, alongside incorporating holly, ivy, pinecones, and dried seed heads into your decorations is easier and more stunning than anything you can buy.
You will need:
• Sturdy wire wreath frame
• Floristry wire and garden twine
• Selection of fresh or dried foliage - ivy, holly, evergreen sprigs, rosemary or bay
• Pinecones, seed heads, berries (rosehips, hawthorn) and small branches
• Ribbon or fabric scraps for a flourish
1. Lay out your frame and begin by attaching a base layer of greenery, working in one direction for a neat, overlapping effect. Use wire or twine to secure stems.
2. Build up texture and interest with different shades of green, adding sprigs of holly (with their glossy leaves and scarlet berries) and ivy for trailing lines.

3. Insert pinecones, dried seed heads, and berries at intervals to add visual contrast. These can be attached with wire, nestled among the foliage or glued if preferred.
4. Finish with a ribbon or bow.
You will need:
• Long lengths of twine or thin rope
• Fresh or dried greenery (spruce, fir, cedar, ivy)
• Pinecones, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, seed heads
• Floristry wire or thread
1. Cut your twine to the desired length for your space.
2. Bundle small groups of greenery together and secure at intervals along the twine using wire or thread. Alternate between different greens for visual depth.
3. Intertwine sprigs of ivy for a trailing effect, and add pops of colour with holly berries, dried fruit slices or seed heads.
4. Attach pinecones or cinnamon sticks with wire, letting them dangle for movement.
You will need:
• Shallow tray or bowl
• Moss, evergreen sprigs, holly,
ivy, dried seed heads
• Pinecones, berries, twigs
• Small candles or tealights (optional)
• Floristry foam (optional, for structure)
1. Line a tray your bowl with a base of moss or evergreen twigs.
2. Now arrange holly leaves, ivy trails, and dried seed heads in clusters.
3. Layer pinecones and berries for structure and sprays of colour, inserting small candles among the foliage for a soft glow, ensuring they are safely positioned (use electric ones if concerned about safety).

The kitchen updates that will make your space feel fresh and up to date.
Out: Trendy countertop gadgets
In: Classic cookery utensils
Bad news for those who received the latest multi-purpose blender/ mixer/chopper/dough kneader for Christmas, as such appliances have fallen out of favour.
This is partly due to the fact they cost the Earth, and do lots of jobs averagely well instead of one job exceptionally well. There has been a return to tradition, with chef-grade graters, knives, pasta makers and mandolins becoming the new must-have items.
Out: Branded appliances
In: Practical innovations
The craze for a certain fourletter, retro-inspired brand lasted longer than anyone expected, but now the need for products of substance have taken their place.
Fridge freezers, for instance, which use technology that keep freezer drawers frost-free and help food stay fresh for longer, are highly desirable given rising food prices.
Out: Painted shaker cupboards
In: Natural timber

Lovely though they are, painted cabinets are no longer highly coveted. In their place is natural wood that both emphasises a connection to the natural world and eschews closed-off cupboards for open shelving.
Out: Overpriced, over-imposing ovens
In: Smart cookers
If you’ve spent most of your adult life longing for an Aga, then you may be disappointed about this turn toward high-tech function

over visual splendour. It’s now the case that ovens that double as air fryers, microwaves or pizza ovens are far more versatile than the archaic range style.

Why
1. Best choice, best prices
Tour operators and airlines release their peak-season availability well in advance, which means the widest choice of hotels, villas and sumptuous summer accommodation becomes available, not to mention the best flights too.
Mid-January represents one of the busiest times of the year for travel bookings in the UK. Acting in December and the first few days of 2026 will get you ahead of the curve before the online scramble sends prices skyward.
2. Low deposits, and more time to pay
Many tour companies offer low-deposit schemes in winter, letting you reserve your dream trip for as little as £50 per

person. That gives you six months or more to spread the balance, which for many of us is handy when Christmas spending has already dented (or decimated!) the budget.
3. Time to plan and dream
Booking early isn’t just practical, it’s joyful. Having a holiday on the horizon brightens up the greyest of January mornings. It also gives you months to plan excursions, shop for summer clothes, whilst
getting that beach body in whatever shape makes you feel most comfortable. Doing it all now also eliminates the element of rushing everything through at the last minute.
4. Peace of mind
Finally, there’s reassurance. With ABTA and ATOL protection available on package holidays, your money is safe… although you may still have to get up early to reserve your space by the pool!

How to stay upbeat over Christmas and New Year.
Live in the present
Despite the inevitable moments of anxiety, there is often still a lot to be glad for. Whether it’s a kind word from a neighbour, the comfort of a cosy cuppa, or simply the view from your window, recognising small blessings can help anchor your mood in positivity.
Keep it real
It’s easy to be swept away by picture-perfect images of Christmas portrayed in films and adverts. Remember, perfection is a myth.

Embrace the beauty of imperfectionthe slightly burnt gingerbread, the lastminute gift scramble, the laughter and chaos that fill your home. Christmas doesn’t need to be flawless to be wonderful.
Contact friends and family, whether near or far. A video call, a thoughtful card, or even a shared playlist can bridge the gap, helping nurture a sense of belonging.
Don’t overdo it

walk instead of gorging in front of the telly, or indulging in self-care instead of Irish cream.
Reflect

Regardless of the instant gratification splurging can bring, the consequences are often not worth that brief high. Consider the repercussions and try to find a healthier outlet such as seeking meaningful presents, going for a big winter

As the year draws to a close, use the quiet moments to reflect on your growth and experiences. Consider what you’d like to embrace or let go of in the coming year. Setting gentle intentions, rather than rigid resolutions can set a positive tone for the months ahead.

Embrace authenticity and conquer your fear of rejection by embracing a radical new approach to your life.
Alfred Adler, a renowned psychologist, argued that the opinions and expectations of others should not dictate our choices.
According to the Austrian, much of our unhappiness comes from trying to live up to others’ expectations; while true freedom lies in accepting that not everyone will like us.
This concept is explored in the book, The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga, which offers practical dialogue and thought experiments to challenge our assumptions about happiness and interpersonal relationships:
Self-reflection
Ask yourself whose approval you are seeking and why. Reflect on times when pleasing others conflicted with your own values or
needs, and if you don’t know what these are, spend time working out what matters to you.
Set boundaries
Learn to say ‘no’ without guilt and communicate your needs and limits clearly, even if it risks disapproval.
Reframe rejection
View being disliked not .as a personal failing, but as a natural outcome of individuality. Understand that disagreement or criticism is not always hostile; it can simply mean your values differ from someone else’s.
Seek support
Surround yourself with people who respect and value authenticity, and remember, quality trumps quantity in relationships.

Practise self-compassion
Treat yourself kindly when you face criticism or rejection. Remind yourself that everyone experiences disapproval at times. However, embracing respectful disagreement and individuality is increasingly valued.

I will walk
The pros and cons of wearable health technology.
Commit to a brisk 20-minute walk each day in the bracing UK winter, whether it’s around your local area, at lunchtime, or after dinner.
I will hydrate
Aim to increase your water intake by carrying a reusable bottle and drinking a glass with every meal.
I will cook
Bring out your inner Nigella and try to cook one or two extra homemade meals each week to reduce reliance on takeaways or processed foods. Try batch cooking, if possible, to help you stay on track.
I will get active
Join a local fitness class or try something new, like yoga, swimming or cycling (after all, it’s the Tour de France in a few months!). Start off gently so as not to get disheartened and, if possible, pay a few classes upfront to help motivate you.
I will rest
Establish a regular bedtime routine to ensure you get seven or more hours of sleep each night.
I will be mindful
Spend five minutes each day practising deep breathing, meditation, or simply being present.
I will get offline

of one book per month or whatever feels manageable.
I will connect
Make it a point to call or visit a friend or family member regularly, or join a new group - such as a knitting or book club to create new relationships.
I will not restrict
Focus on adding more fruit and veg to your meals rather than restricting foods, as you are more likely to succeed with this approach.
I will plan ahead
By getting to grips on your schedule you will gain better control over your habits. This can include prepping meals and sticking to exercise routines.

Designate at least one techfree hour each day to focus on real-life connections and aim to cut back in general on your social media habits.

I will read

Swap some screen time for reading, setting

I will make time for me

Set aside a little time each week for a hobby, relaxation, or pampering. By respecting your own time and need for attention you will allow others to do the same.

I will declutter

Clean out a small space – like your desk or a drawer –each week to promote a clearer mind and be firm in defining what you do and don’t need.
I will clean up my act
Commit to switching to cleaning products with fewer chemicals in as these are better for both the environment and your personal health.

December 2025 and January 2026

See Jupiter Shine Bright In The East On Winter Nights:
Jupiter is back in our evening sky this winter! Unmissable to the naked eye, the biggest planet in our solar system dazzles in the east as a bright white ‘star’ in the constellation of Gemini. In early December Jupiter is up above the eastern horizon by 8pm. As we head later into the winter it rises earlier, and by the time we reach opposition on 10th January it’ll be visible by dusk. 10x50 binoculars will show Jupiter as a tiny disc of light flanked by up to four of its bright moons – Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. A small telescope reveals dark banded zones on the planet itself.
Say Hello to Orion the Hunter:
Winter marks the best time of the year to see the constellation of Orion. From the Chilterns (and the rest of the UK) this iconic pattern of stars is only visible in the evening sky for about six months of the year. During December you’ll find Orion towards your south-east during mid evening. By January it is up above the south-east horizon as soon as it gets dark.
