Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable!

I write this during the week of national mourning fol lowing the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. King Charles III has ascended to the throne and is now travelling across the whole of the country meeting his subjects and establishing himself as the new monarch, together with his Queen Consort, Camilla.

Christ Church Dunstable stands with the nation as we thank God for the Queen’s long and faithful reign, and as we pray for God’s wisdom and blessing on the new King as he be gins his reign. History and change run side by side, and it is already clear that King Charles embodies vital constitutional continuity with his mother’s reign. Yet, by early October, when you receive this issue of ‘the Vine’ some of the inevitable changes may be visible, such as the first of the new King Charles III stamps, or the new coins. Even though this has been a time of some change for us all in relation to national leadership, this is also a great time to be a philatelist or a numismatist!

As I think of our response as a community in the light of this event, I have been struck by a repeated expression that there was comfort in the idea that ‘the Queen has always been there’. This has come through in so many different tributes and comments from so many through all of society.

The concept of ‘the constant’ is a significant thing. We like there to be something in our lives which stays the same. Children may have a blanket or teddy for comfort; whatever happens it’s always there for them. We may like to have things a specific way in our homes; whatever happens throughout our day at least our home is the way we like it. And in a subtle way over the last 70 years the Queen has been an underlying and

relatively unchanging figure. She was there through wars, through fifteen prime ministers, the development of technologies, and in so many other ways. Everything changes... but who stayed the same? The Queen. And her annual speech at 3pm on Christmas day was like a milestone of stability. But now the constant has changed. When my wife says she wants to watch the King’s speech this Christmas I won’t know if I’m going to be watching King Charles III or Colin Firth!

This change of ‘the constant’ can have a deep and unsettling effect on people. It reminds us of the truth of God’s Word, the Bible, as the psalmist says,

“The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, …” (Psalm 103:15-16)

Our mortality can cause us to worry, but we need not be anxious. Throughout her reign Queen Elizabeth II gave us sound advice, and in 2014 she said with great wisdom, “For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace...is an inspiration and an anchor in my life.” While some may have found their constant in the Queen, the Queen found her’s in the eternal King of heaven and earth, Jesus Christ. The same Psalm 103 continues saying,

“But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him” (Psalm 103:17). God’s love for his people, those who turn to him, is an unending constant that will never change and one that we can trust in as an anchor for our lives, and into eternity. If you have been unsettled by recent events and would value talking with someone, please do get in touch with us using the details below. We would love to hear from you.

Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire and Dunstable Town Mayor proclaim the accession of King Charles III

The historic event took place in Grove House Gardens on Sunday 11 September. Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Cynthia Gresham, and Dunstable Town Mayor, Cllr. Liz Jones hosted a Proclamation ceremony in Grove House Gardens.

The ceremony took place on Sunday 11 September 2022, and was attended by local residents, representatives of local organisations, Town and Central Bedford shire Councillors and past Mayors of Dunstable. The ceremony saw the Deputy Lieutenant introduce the ac cession proclamation, and Cllr. Jones read the proclamation of the accession of King Charles III, followed by three cheers for the new Sovereign. Dunstable Town Band then played the National Anthem, and all those in attendance sang along. The Deputy Lieutenant and the Mayor then walked to Priory Gardens to lay floral tributes.

Dunstable Town Mayor, Cllr. Liz Jones said: “It was a complete honour and privilege to read the Proclamation at this afternoon’s gathering. It was lovely to have so many people come out to watch and take part, and to then walk with us to Priory Gardens to lay the floral tributes.”

Other ‘blooming’ successeshave been the Pomegranate fruit at the Physic border in Priory gardens loving the Mediterranean hot summer weather we have had. ‘In Bloomers’, Hugh and Ann, harvesting some of the Hambling apples from the tree they planted in 2015 in the garden at Chew’s House. This variety was propagated by William Hambling, Masterat Chew’s School from 1856 to 1898 - wonderful cookers!

Other varieties of Bedfordshire bred fruit trees are growing in the Wildlife Trust orchard at Blow’s Downs.

ROTARY CLUB OF DUNSTABLE

to bring about the change, we all need and want.

We have our own Charity called the Rotary Foundation, and this is a global Charity that provides disaster relief and vaccines against Polio and Covid. It relies on the public as well as Rotary members, and is a fantastic way for local people to help with global issues as well as local, as they will often match what ever we raise locally.

Rotary exist locally, nationally and globally. Our local clubs meet weekly and are made up of People of Action who have grown up, live and work in the area. Events are social, but always have the community in mind. We have recently brought our Dunstable Club back to Dunstable, meeting at the Old Palace Lodge on Tuesdays from 12.15 until 2.15PM. Everyone is welcome.

Recent individual and local initiatives have included fundraising for numerous charities, as well as contributing via their time and services. A lot of local initiatives can also be matched by the Rotary Foundation, thereby amplifying the impact of local initiatives.

Dunstable Wombles litter picking regularly sees a good turnout of people cleaning up our countryside and freeing it from day-today rubbish.

Recently, our local club has raised £1500 for the Air Ambulance Service; a tremendously valuable service to anyone in need.

We’ve also helped augment other initia tives, such as a recent abseiling experience by family members of one of our members. Funds raised went to Diabetes UK.

At Rotary, we do everything we can to pro vide equal opportunities, be as diverse and inclusive as we can. Anyone is welcome to join us and help bring about a better community and world for us to live in. Because together, we see a world where people unite

We are all aware of what is going on in Ukraine. The Rotary Foundation provides a platform where you and I in Dunstable , Houghton Regis and surrounding villages, can directly help those affected. And not just by donating money. We have the Rotary Shoebox Scheme as an example. These are boxes (about the size of - you guessed it - a shoebox) which you can fill with items that will help those affected. Be this; toys for young children, toiletries and clothing for all ages, household goods or baby care items. Anything that helps give people a sense of normality, and shelter from fleeing warzones and persecution. Due to logistical issues, we request no food.

The Rotary Shoebox Scheme is a perfect example of bridging the gap between those high-profile people you see and read about on TV and the internet, doing amazing things for those less fortunate than us facing disas ters and adversity. They would not be able to do what they do, without yours and our support. It is the resources that you and I send, that those high-profile figures are delivering.

To quote the Rotary Foundation themselves, “Thanks to the generosity of donors around the world, we raised more than $15 million in contributions that are already helping provide people with essential items such as water, food, shelter, medicine, and clothing.” Charity really does start at home, with you and me.

Like other worldwide efforts you may have associated with Rotary such as Polio eradi cation, or Covid vaccination, Rotary Foundation also match local contributions. Closer to home, Rotary have been involved

www.the vine directory.co.uk12 local News

in providing funds to our schools. Many of you will be familiar with the Santa’s Sleigh we have every year. The fund-raising we do alongside this is matched by Rotary Foundation. These funds have recently gone into providing much needed equipment at the Eaton Bray Academy.

Lancot School is another recipient of funds, having their pond regeneration project enabled from Santa’s Sleigh fund raising, which was matched by the Rotary Foundation.

Once a year, our local Dunstable Rotary Club hires a coach. Approximately 50 people from Dunstable go on a mystery tour around Christmas time. These are people who would

not otherwise be able to get out themselves. It ena bles them to have some independence from their carers.

We also work with the Salvation Army to deliver Christmas dinners to those in need, who have no one.

So, if you have an idea, a cause, or an initiative you want to explore, come see us! Join us! We are friendly, local, and supportive. We alone will not change the world. We need your help!

Mabel’s News

from Appledown Rescue Kennels

Hello again!

I am Mabel the resident dog at Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels in Eaton Bray.

Meet Velma

This stunning girl is Velma Kelly. A GSD who was born in March 2019.

Velma is a very happy girl who loves her walks, has good lead manners, knows her basic commands and laps up attention. It seems extraordinary that this super dog ended up as an unloved stray. She will be a great addition to an active family willing to give her the love she so deserves. She may need a little help with house training but she is bright and eager to please. For more info and photos please see her album on our Facebook page. If you feel you can offer her a loving forever home please visit our website for details of the rehoming process and an application form. Viewings are by appointment only. To support our work you can make a one-off donation of £3 by texting APPLE to 70111, or donate via Paypal using the ‘DONATE Support a Cause’ option. Cheques are very welcome too!

New 10 Week Course

Scientists and Engineers through the ages

There is so much in our everyday life which we take for granted - and feel that the technology has always been there. But it hasn't always been there; the underlying scientific principles had first to be discovered and then turned into something of practical use. This course takes us from the Ancient Greeks and their struggles to convince the "powers that be" that natural phenomena have a rational rather than a mystical basis. We then look at pioneers such as Leonardo da Vinci, Copernicus and Galileo before moving on to such as Hooke, Newton and Einstein. Finally, we consider the great engineers of the 18th and 19th centuries like Stephenson, Watt and Brunel.

The 10 week course given by Paul Heley B.Sc, M.Phil continues (from 20th September) until the end of November at 10.30am and the price is £6 per talk. "Drop-ins" are very welcome.

The venue is the LUBYA building, Manchester Place, Dunstable. (LU6 1HT)

The Longest Legacy

From the 15 Prime Ministers she swore in, to the modernisation of the Royal Family and the styling of a public perception that ensures we remain committed to the pomp and pageantry of the House of Windsor, Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy is impeccable and elegant.

We reflect on some cherished moments along the way.

The Heir Apparent

Born in April 1926, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was third in line to the throne behind her uncle, Edward, Prince of Wales, and her father, Albert, Duke of York. However, her ascension was accelerated when, in 1936, following the death of King George V, her uncle relinquished the crown so he could marry the American divorcee, Wallis Simpson.

Now heir apparent, during the war she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, learning how to drive and maintain vehicles; and on her first oversees visit, to South Africa in 1947, gave a speech dedicating herself to the Commonwealth – a promise Her Majesty kept to the very end.

By the time of her beloved father’s death in 1952, Princess Elizabeth had become a wife, to Prince Philip, and mother to Prince Charles and Princess

Anne. Yet on undertaking the crown aged in her midtwenties, she was acutely aware of how monumental the task was that lay ahead of her.

In her prime

Queen Elizabeth II made a truly modern Head of State. Her Coronation at Westminster Abbey was the first to be televised, and on her gruelling first tour of the Commonwealth, alongside Prince Philip, she made every effort to win over the hearts and minds of all those she encountered.

Naturally, over the decades there was much political and social tumult. Her Majesty’s reign saw 15 Prime Ministers come and go, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss.

There too was drama from within her family. In 1955 it became necessary to intervene in her sister Margaret’s planned nuptials to Peter Townsend; though the most significant

upset during her reign was surely the dissolvement of Charles and Diana’s marriage, and the Princess of Wales’ untimely death in a car crash aged 36.

Among the stars

In her twilight years, the Queen cemented her legacy through continued work and devotion, travelling extensively and hosting countless high-profile and sometimes controversial guests and Heads of State, including Mugabe, Mandela and Trump.

The final two decades of Queen Elizabeth’s life and reign undoubtedly brought both joy and sadness in equal measures - the weddings of six of her grandchildren and the birth of 12 great-grandchildren, yet also the deaths of her beloved mother and sister Margaret and the passing of the king of her heart, Prince Philip.

An Icon for the Ages

Exploring and celebrating the symbolism we attached to Queen Elizabeth II, not just in life, but in the legacy that the Royal Family will take forward in future.

To appreciate Queen Elizabeth II was to view her not just as a person, but as a purposeful and powerful force who influenced and touched lives. Despite evolving from a young woman to an aged lady, the symbolism of her, as Queen of the United Kingdom and various other Commonwealth realms, has been perpetual and uniquesomeone able to touch so many lives over so many decades.

For now, that chapter, where we default to our admiration and love for the entity that is the Queen, closes. It seems unlikely that in any of our lifetimes we will again identify a Queen again as Head of State. Conceivably, this will next happen should Prince George of Wales – currently aged nine – passes on the throne, and supposes his eldest child is a daughter.

Of course, the Queen is celebrated much more than

just a name. In the immediate aftermath of Elizabeth’s death, many noted the literate strength in terming a King as our monarch; yet Charles will surely never better his mother for solidity and toughness, poise and precision.

What Queen Elizabeth II has given to the UK, and the world, is almost a reinterpretation of womanly power. When she climbed onto the throne in 1952, aged just 25, she knew there would never be a King to sit alongside her; and in Prince Philip we had a partner who never once looked to steal her thunder.

While Elizabeth was always surrounded by a bountiful, adoring family, and an admiring nation, there was often a nagging feeling that she was alone in her existence. The most isolated of exposed lives, and in so many ways an existence that was abnormal, yet conducted with grace, calm and unrelenting commitment. This all adds to our perception of what a modern-day Queen is. Consider the rise in feminism, too; of equality

between the sexes, or female empowerment. It can be no coincidence that all these have all come under her watch.

Across 70 years on the throne, so many have noted the huge societal shift in the way we live and significant changes our country has enjoyed experienced, and rightly so. And sure, the Queen won’t lay any claim to the progression of industry, interconnectivity and technology; yet she may justifiably take credit as the fulcrum and the foundations on which so many female movements have been built. After all, how can there be any greater proof than in herself?

What the Queen Meant to Me

We look at the changing elements that will soon play themselves out in a very public way, as the Elizabeth II era assumes its cherished place in history.

King Charles III

“To my darling Mama, as you begin your last great journey to join my dear late Papa, I want simply to say this: thank you.

“Thank you for your love and devotion to our family and to the family of nations you have served so diligently all these years.

“May flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest.”

Boris Johnson

“In the hearts of every one of us there is an ache at the passing of our Queen, a deep and personal sense of loss – far more intense, perhaps, than we expected.

“She seemed so timeless and so wonderful that I am afraid we had come to believe, like children, that she would just go on and on.”

Sir Elton John

“She was an inspiring presence to be around, and led the country through some of our greatest, and darkest, moments with grace, decency, and a genuine caring warmth. Queen

Elizabeth has been a huge part of my life from childhood to this day, and I will miss her dearly.”

Dame Helen Mirren

“I am proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility.”

Paddington Bear

“Thank you, Ma’am, for everything.”

Andrew Lloyd Webber

“The Queen has been the constant anchor of Britain and her beloved Commonwealth, and an inspiration to the world for her lifetime of service.

“Her legacy will be remembered as a selfless beacon for love, understanding and the celebration of fellow human beings all over the world, no matter their race or creed.”

Dame Joanna Lumley

“The Queen was adored and respected. She represented all that was kind and fair, brave and good-hearted, noble and entirely admirable, and we shall miss her with all our hearts.”

Sting

“I had a quiet weep for the Queen. I am sad for my country and what it has lost.”

Daniel Craig

“She leaves an incomparable legacy and will be profoundly missed.”

Stephen Fry

“Oh dear. Oh my. Oh heavens. Bless my soul. Oh lor. Heck. I don’t know why I’m sobbing. Silly really. Oh dear.”

Piers Morgan

“You and I and millions of people have grown up with her, and she’s always been this tower of strength and dignity for our country.

“She represented strength, she kept going.”

And a quote from the lady herself:

Queen Elizabeth II

“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be decorated to your service.”

Queen Elizabeth II: Five Memorable Moments

Our beloved Queen always retained a wicked ability to surprise. Here we celebrate occasions when the delight, dominance, devilishness and charm of Elizabeth II really came to the fore.

For Queen and country, 2012

At the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony the stage was set, and the eyes of the world were on Stratford. A video begins showing Daniel Craig’s James Bond arriving at Buckingham Palace, where he is escorted to Her Majesty by two loyal corgis.

The pair then make their way to a helicopter and after a whistlestop tour of London –not to mention a wave from Churchill – seemingly parachute jump into the stadium!

Annus horibilis, 1992

Imagine, amidst a disastrous year, you then are obliged to give a speech to mark your 40th anniversary as the Queen of Great of Britain.

It would have been acceptable not mention the woes that had recently engulfed her family – from the revelation of lusty phone calls between Camilla and Charles to the separation of Andrew and Fergie, alongside the blaze that literally engulfed Windsor Castle – but instead

she faced head-on the catastrophes that threatened her exemplary reign.

The sword and the cake, 2021

Just like in the mythical days of King Arthur, the notion of a monarch wielding a sword to defend the people and land of their kingdom is branded in our imaginations.

It was this irresistible urge then, which spurned our very own Queen to take up a ceremonial sabre to defeat her foe. The battlefield: the 2021 G7 summit in Cornwall. Her target: an enormous cake.

The rambling rose, 2008 “It was clear from the moment we stopped that they hadn’t recognised the Queen,” began former Royal Protection officer Richard Griffin, referencing some American tourists near Balmoral. Upon asking where she lived, the Queen said “Well, I live in London, but I’ve got a holiday home just on the other side of the hills.

The Americans asked if she’d ever met the Queen to which she replied, “I haven’t, but Dickie here meets her regularly.” They excitedly took pictures with the pair before going on their way. Later, the Queen joked, “I’d love to be a fly on the wall when he shows those photographs to his friends in America.”

Lady Ma’amalade, 2022 Another special Jubilee moment was the video of our magnificent late Queen with fellow national treasure, Paddington Bear, who had come to have tea at Buckingham Palace.

As is befitting of our beloved bear, chaos ensues: tea is greedily slurped, China teapots are nearly broken, and cream cakes are squirted.

By way of apology for his poor behaviour Paddington offers Her Majesty a marmalade sandwich, but she already has one tucked away in her bag: ‘for later’.

A New Dawn

It is doubtless that with a bittersweet heart King Charles III embarks on his new role as Head of State. Having waited 73 years to take up the post he was literally born for, His Majesty has long dreamed of this historic moment. And yet, the price of power comes at the loss of his greatest love, mentor, and ally: his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

And while Charles assimilates to a new life and role, this is not necessarily the only challenge he has to face, for the opinionated Prince must now become the impartial King.

Having waited in the wings for the past seven decades, it would have been ludicrous for the Prince of Wales to not only nurture opinions on society and the world-at-large, but to express them also. From environmental issues to a desire to revive grammar schools –and most recently a disdain

for the government’s Rwanda deportation plan – the Prince of Wales has not only never shied from letting his thoughts be known, often instigating change via his various charitable and passion projects.

The issue here is that a prince may have such hobbies and persuasions, whereas a king, in truth, must not.

One of the most abiding and best-known rules of the British constitution is that the monarch stays out of politics. This is the foundation on which the monarchy survives in a democratic society regardless of what personal gains may be made from wielding its enormous power, publicly or otherwise.

Thankfully, King Charles is a brave, sincere, grounded member of the royal family, who takes humility as a cornerstone of behaviour having seen such a lack of it in many of his

relations. He understands the next step in the line of Windsor is not in questioning what is right and proper, but more prioritising the elements of society that need his authority and guidance most, during what are difficult times for us all.

As king, Charles is responsible for carrying the weight of not just a nation, but the other 53 Commonwealth countries, across 14 realms, which now fall under his rule. He must be a champion of the people, cultivating pride when times are good, and courage when they are bad.

It is a mighty task, but one he is more than qualified for. He will undoubtedly be a very different monarch, yet what should reassure us all is the fact he has inherited his mother’s values, strength, and sense of duty.

Now, a new dawn has come… God save the King.

We look at the changing elements that will soon play themselves out in a very public way, as the Elizabeth II era assumes its cherished place in history.

Old UnitsWeight, Dry Capacity and Liquid Measure

Weight

Just so as to make life really awkward, there were many different systems for weight :- Apothcary, Avoirdupois, Troy (mainly for the more precious metals), Tower, London, Merchant and Butcher, each of which was favoured by a different trade. In the past, these different systems were frequently used simultaneously which would have made it very difficult indeed trying to find the real weight of something - and it was also difficult to know which system might be regarded as the most representa tive. The system which finally became the most common - and the one we generally used - is the Avoirdupois system which was approved by Elizabeth 1st in 1588. The word comes from the French “avoir” (to have) + “du” (some) + “poids” (weight), ie “to have some weight”. But it’s now defined as having 16 ounces to 1 pound and based on the Grain (as for wheat) and is now further defined as having 7000 grains to the pound. But before this, it underwent a number of different versions before final stability in 1824.

An original, and generally accepted table of weight was :-

20 grains = 1 scruple

3 scruples = 1 dram

8 drams = 1 ounce (symbol oz)

12 ounces = 1 pound (symbol lb)

7 pounds = 1 clove

2 cloves = 1 stone (ie 1 st = 14 lbs)

2 stones = 1 quarter (ie 1 qtr = 28 lbs)

cwt = 112 lbs)

20 cwts = 1 ton (or 2240 lbs)

(symbol

But the above table, down to the level of the pound, has also become what is known as the Troy system and the big difference between the Troy and Avoirdupois systems comes after the ounce when the Avoirdupois system has decreed that there should be 16 ounces to a pound - not 12. It therefore means that the number of grains in a Troy pound = 20 X 3 X 8 X 12 = 5760 whereas in the Avoirdupois system the number becomes 20 X 3 X 8 X 16 = 7680.

But for the sake of simplicity, a compromise rounded it to 7000 in 1824.

For those of you for whom this is double-Dutch, the approximate everyday metric equivalents are 28 grams = 1 ounce; 454 grams = 1 lb; 2.25 lbs = 1 kilogram; 6.5 Kg = 1 stone; just over 900 Kg = 1 ton (but 1000 Kg = 1 metric tonne)

The Troy system can also start with the grain and an alternative to the above table is :-

4 grains = 1 carat (as found in precious jewellery)

6 carats = 1 pennyweight (symbol is dwt)

20 dwts = 1 Troy ounce (ozT)

12 ozTs = 1 Troy pound (lbT)

But as shown above, the Troy pound and the Avoirdupois pound are not the same.

Life gets very confusing!

To make things worse, the Apothcary’s system

(which can still be found in medicine) was/is very similar to the Troy system in principle but got itself into something of a mess when a given unit could vary quite remarkably from place to place. For example, the Apothcary’s ounce across Europe could be anything from 25 gram to 35 gram.

It finally became obvious that these different and alternative weight systems, and the considerable variations even within a given system, were becoming ridiculous; hence the need for stabilisa tion. This resulted in the universal adoption of the Avoirdupois system for everyday purposes (the one which oldies like me grew up with) :-

16 oz = 1 lb; 14 lbs = 1 stone; 8 stones = 1 cwt; 20 cwt = 1 ton.

I’m sure many will recognise this table.

As with length (see previous article), many of these units have a Roman origin and lb for a pound comes from the Roman Libra ponda (which was much the same weight as a Troy pound and approximately 75% of an Avoirdupois pound).

The d found in pennyweight (dwt) - and also used to denote our former penny coin before decimalisation - comes from the Roman Denarius which was basically a small silver coin used to pay mercenary soldiers. The oz symbol for the ounce comes from the Roman Uncia meaning a twelfth part since the Romans had 12 oz to 1 lb (as did Troy).

Dry capacity and liquid measure

As with all other systems of measurement of some form, those for dry capacity and liquid measure have undergone many versions in the past and, like weight, were also standardised in 1824. To a certain extent, dry capacity and liquid measure have much in common - they both represent volume - and the same names can be found for many of the smaller units.

We start off with the minim which is defined as the smallest liquid measure possible, equal to a drop of liquid (not a very precise definition) and there are:-

20 minims = 1 fluid scruple

3 fld scrs = 1 fluid dram

8 fld drms = 1 fluid ounce (but a “dram” of

whisky in a pub is usually a fifth of a fl oz)

5 fld ozs = 1 gill (a measure too small for beer but too large for whisky)

4 gills = 1 pint (so 20 fld ozs = 1 pint)

2 pints = 1 quart

4 quarts = 1 gallon

Where a gallon was defined, in 1824, as the volume occupied by 10 lbs of water at 62 degrees Fahrenheit. So just over 11 gallons of water weigh a hundreweight proving that, as we all know, water is very heavy - and get heavier with age!

The above table can now split into two parts with one part continuing with dry capacity and the other part with liquid :-

2 gallons = 1 peck

4 gallons = 1 bucket

4 pecks = 1 bushel

2.25 buckets or 8 bushels = 1 quarter

9 gallons = 1 firkin

10 quarters = 1 last (640 gallons)

4 firkins = 1 barrel = 36 gallons

1.5 barrels = 1 hogshead (54 gallons)

2 hogsheads = 1 butt (108 gallons)

2 butts = 1 tun (216 gallons)

I can remember pecks and bushels as a boy on my uncle’s farm; and I always took solace, when accused of not washing properly, in the old saying that “you’ve got to eat a peck of dirt before you die”. My excuse for being dirty!

But, and as can be seen, these different units for dry capacity and for liquid measure were very messy - and there were many others even more remote. They were not at all convenient and very difficult to remember. It is a blessing that they have been superceded by the Metric system; even though some of these old units - those in bold print - have been retained to a certain extent (especially the pint and the gallon).

Finally, it’s interesting to note that when speaking of a ship being so many tons, this is not its weight (as popularly thought) but its volume since 1 ton = 100 cu.ft

Japandi Trend - coming to a home near you?!

It’s the architectural trend that just won’t go away, but what is Japandi, and are you brave enough to pull it off?

There are some bold, peculiar and ambitious interior trends that evolve over time, with many originating out of our ability to combine established styles. In new designs that echo and reflect traditional designs, we link cultures, embrace originality and, in the case of Japandi, create a bridge between Scandinavia and Asia… and that’s no mean feat!

Japandi is a combination of Scandi and Japanese styles. This hybrid harnesses, firstly, Japanese minimalism, which defines the simplicity, space, and clarity of the platform. The appeal of this goes back centuries, with sense and style applied to space in a way that

calms the mind and reassures the soul. What’s smart is the ability to then add to this the warmth, comfort and select colour ranges of Scandi design, with an emphasis on detail, precision and depth.

The end effect, therefore, is a look that has space but detail. It’s a charming combination that celebrates the styles and sensibilities of two very different cultures. What’s more… it works!

The bedroom

A bedroom would therefore showcase plain walls and bedsheets, in bright tones, but complemented with wooden

furniture, classic shapes and a hint of nature, where functionality is important, but cleanness prevails.

The dining room

A dining room would again combine bright, white walls with a statement piece of wooden furniture, with detail coming as much from the sparsity of a look rather than the objects within.

Darker tones are allowed to prevail providing the key echoes of Feng Shui are abided by, with chairs positioned with the intention of inviting someone to sit, relax and reflect on their surroundings; while the use of large windows and exit points – both practically and visually – into outside space patterns perfectly a Japandi style that aims to bring the outdoors into our living spaces.

Kitchens and bathrooms

Perhaps it’s in the kitchen that the Japandi styling works better than anywhere else. You have the chic, uncomplicated, straight lines of Scandinavian design and a love affair with

www.the vine directory.co.uk30
Home & Garden

wood and texture, with an Asia aesthetic that is elegant yet functional. Just make sure you clear away the dishes before retiring to bed!

Bathrooms work in a similar way – the Scandi influences offer natural light, and neutral tones we typically associate with bathroom items; while the Scandi influence once again paints simple lines and uncomplicated ideas onto a canvas that should offer you calm and serenity, particularly when taking a relaxing soak after a long day at work.

Workspaces

Warm, personal and down-to-earth meets uncluttered – in many ways we should all be working by the Japandi principles when it comes to being organised and inspired for those hours when we need to be productive.

Why Japandi style works

Rather than drawing in styles, it seems the year 2022 is set for interior reinvention the like of which we’ve never seen before.

Regional design standards have never been so exposed to a global market, and with that comes a dynamic merging of ideas. That not only makes Japandi work perfectly, but you sense it could be the first of many collaborations that influence our aims and aspirations going forward.

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column

He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. is month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses the changing seasons, and why he ventures out into his garden in any weather.

I’ve been talking to a number of people over these summer months and it’s always a pleasure. Naturally, it feels like the part of the year where we all come out and celebrate what it is to have a space that is all ours – we all share in the successes and, okay, some of the failures too!

Yet what’s interesting is the fact the longer the summer goes on, the more the chat seems to evolve. ere is an unspoken devil in the air, and it goes by the name of winter, where gardeners all across the UK dread not just the hibernation of some of the creatures in their garden, but their own removal or withdrawal from service as the skies grow darker and rain threatens.

Of course, I can see why so many of us sink into this

mindset of what is e ectively a subconscious filling of time before things start to pick up again in early spring. ough as I have said on many occasions, there are still so many plants that flourish across the winter months that we can take real pleasure from, so I would be firm in encouraging people to look at winter as a lot more than just a time when we feel like stepping o the gardening carousel.

Certainly, my routine in those quieter months never changes. Whether rain, hail, sleet or snow, I will always po er around the garden. Okay, so in the winter months it’s a lot more di cult to sit still in a garden anyway, but just ge ing out there, soaking up the air and feeling the natural goodness around you, is really inspiring.

I get mucky every day when I’m at home, and if I’ve got a day of work or filming that will take me away from the house, I’ll always make sure I step out and spend some peaceful time alone before I leave – it sort of sets me up for the day.

Ultimately, what it’s all about is being out there, and believing you are making a di erence. I’ve always thought

however tiny a patch of ground you have, if you look a er it well when you shu e o your mortal coil you’ve paid your rent for your life on Earth.

To leave that space just a li le bit be er than how it was previously is a very special thing, and no wintry rainstorm should stop us from wanting to achieve that!

Berry nice indeed

Warming those winter garden vistas with some bursts of festive colour.

We all fear the greying gloom of winter, yet with the use of berry-producing plants and trees, your outside space can quickly adopt all the sprigs and sprays of summer.

Those showcasing winter berries are easy to grow, hardy and resilient. More than that, they attract birds to your garden at a time when seeing wildlife can sometimes feel like an unexpected treat.

SORBUS

In white, pink, yellow, red, blue and quite the most stunning copper tones, the berries from this deciduous tree will bring breathless colour to even the darkest corner.

With over 100 species of tree and shrub making up the family, you won’t be short of choice or subtlety, with each growing to around six metres tall, and lasting for between 10-20 years.

HOLLY

A Christmas favourite, holly combines a burning red berry with that intensely detailed, beautifully curated leaf, using a combination of greens that offset its radiant bedfellow with a flourish of frosty finesse.

Perhaps the most resplendent winter berry that we know, though for all its festive connotations, it’s sure to stick around for many months of magic.

CALLICARPA

This shrub has purple jewel-like berries that look as if they’ve come straight from a safe deposit box

in Hatton Garden. An intensely rich shade, the plant goes into overdrive in autumn and winter, progressing from small pink flowers in midsummer to an exaggerated and extroverted array of striking, violet, bead-like berries as the months flick by.

Thus, the Callicarpa is guaranteed to offer colour to even the gloomiest garden.

COTONEASTER

Don’t be deceived by the name, this shrub is very much a winter dweller, and boasts red or yellow berries that will keep birds in your garden even when the frost descends.

The Cotoneaster does have a reputation for spreading fast, not so much because it’s a back garden bully that can’t be trusted; more by way of birds scattering the seed all around.

If you can deal with little pockets of colour popping up – and why shouldn’t you? – then this is a beautiful plant for weary winter wonderlands.

VIBURNUM TINUS

In its prime between the months of December to April, just when you think the golden pink buds of this characterful plant can’t offer anything more, the ends burst open offering a spray of white flowers.

One of the first risers for spring’s sumptuous season of colour, the Viburnum Tinus will soar in prominences just as the temperatures begin to do likewise, lifting your outside space into sparkling spring finesse.

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column

He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers.

In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at the current energy crisis, and the fact no real solution appears close.

Our energy sector is in a mess, and there is little doubt about that. For too long we have experienced this continual up and down shift of prices and supply and tariffs and everything else that, as consumers, drives us bonkers.

The reality of what we have and what’s going on right now has been brewing for a long time. A perfect storm of situations, from Brexit to covid to the conflict in Russia,

effectively means we are being throttled in our desire to heat and light our homes, ensure water comes through our taps and more.

You may say we have been unlucky to find these factors all colliding in together at one time, yet it is the job of the government – and any sort of decent opposition – to put fail safes in place so that when something

catastrophic like this happens, the end result isn’t the sort of bewildering increase in bills that really may move a greater quantity of people into poverty than we have ever seen before.

It’s a disastrous combination and we are praying for shortand medium-term solutions that will see not just the most vulnerable through the winter, but everyone else besides, because this is a national problem coming at a time of huge inflation and cost of living emergency.

Let’s just go to a basic summary of what we have here – in the UK we’re talking about having privatised energy firms, but we effectively now have restricted competition and regulated prices in the form of a price cap. You have to ask yourself, what is the benefit of privatisation if you work in that marketplace?

It’s the time of year to collect leaves. Collect some interesting shapes and flatten them out under a heavy book overnight. Mix green acrylic paint with a half teaspoon of water to create a paste. Then arrange your flattened leaves and/ or grasses onto your paper. Begin with long thin stems with a few leaves or grasses first. Then arrange more interesting leaves over the top of those and lastly a bigger leaf. You should have 3 layers. Use a nail brush or a toothbrush and dip it into your paint. Scrape a knife/credit card along the bristles upwards towards your face to make a nice splatter on your page. Keep scraping until you have covered the whole sheet of paper. Take each layer off and maybe add a few more splatters to your white leaf motif before taking the last leaf off. Be creative with your tones. Why not come and see the art exhibition! Night Sky

October and November 2022

See Six Autumn Moon Conjunctions: Autumn 2022 sees the moon pass close by to three planets twice over six weeks. The action begins on Wednesday 5 October when a gibbous moon glides below a dim star-like Saturn. Three nights later a near full moonsits serenely above bright Jupiter. By midnight on 14-15 October a waning moon finds itself above Mars bringingAct I to a close. Act II in November sees a half-moon ride low in the sky beneath Saturn on the first evening of the month. Friday 4 November then sees a gibbous moon and Jupiter together in the evening sky, and closer to each other than in October. The best pass of the six though occurs early evening on 11 November when bright Mars glows red next to the moon as it rises over the eastern horizon.

Catch the Milky Way Overhead from the Chilterns: (main image)

Head out into the heart of the Chilterns AONB mid-evening between 18 October and 28 October this year to spot the Milky Way. Look for a faint grey background glow arcing overhead. You can catch it naked eye, but even better with photographic equipment.

Scan the Sky for Northern Taurid Fireballs: Late October and early November could see an outburst of fireballs - bright potentially fiery fragments of space rock - burning up in Earth’s atmosphere. Look towards the south on any clear night from midnight through the early hours for a chance to see them.

Magnificent inside a month

While pursuing a full-time healthy lifestyle takes time and no small amount of commitment, even within a month it’s possible to see and feel real changes to who you are, how you feel and the way your body responds to life’s challenges.

Here are six tips to give your health and wellbeing an instant boost, where you can start feeling the positive effects almost immediately.

1. BETTER DIET

Diet is probably the most obvious place to start. It goes without saying, the unhealthier the food you consume, the harder it’s going to be to make a full 180-degree turnaround.

Focus on replacing fatty foods with fruit and fibre, keep a check on your salt intake, cut down on alcohol and make food preparation changes, such as grilling rather than frying. Topping up the body with vitamins and supplements is a good idea.

2. WALKING OR LIGHT RUNNING

Movement is so vital to the human body, and you don’t have to become an Olympic athlete to be able to see and feel the differences.

Daily walks and regular running can significantly improve your outlook over the course of a month, with recent research revealing that doing regular 60-second energetic activity broken down into three separate 20-second bursts will bring about noticeable benefits within four weeks.

The endorphins created during exercise also make you feel great.

3. SLEEP

Getting at least seven hours a night is essential if you’re looking to enhance your health – it will also help you hold off illnesses… both runof-the-mill colds and viruses, and more serious ailments including cancer, diabetes and stress.

A consistent sleep pattern is also essential, as regulation helps the body figure out the best way to recover from twinges, tweaks and other things that hold us back.

4. WATER

Water is absolutely vital for the human body, and arguably the easiest thing on this list to tick off, providing we can drink around two litres of the stuff a day.

What’s more, hydrating offers the body an instant and very noticeable boost, so you will get

instant gratification for your efforts.

5. FOCUS AND POSITIVITY Yoga, Pilates, Zumba and a variety of other exercise pastimes are perfect for people looking to become fitter, whilst also boosting happiness and mindfulness.

Not only will you feel reward for the effort put in, but your inspiration to keep at it and build further will become automatic, because feeling good is addictive!

Blotch Watch

The perils of blotchy skin, and what you can do to improve your complexion.

Uneven skin tone is something that will affect many of us at some point in our lives, and yet it is a beauty bug we can fix with careful attention.

The Effects

Sunspots

Any beauty buff knows that too much sun exposure can cause real problems for their skin, and yet despite the knowledge that any kind of tan is a negative response to UV rays, that golden glow still proves hard to resist.

Sunspots are brown patches that almost look like a cluster of freckles, and while they aren’t dangerous, they aren’t great either.

Melasma

Though men can suffer from this condition, it is often caused by hormonal changes –specifically fluctuations in oestrogen – that occur during pregnancy or the use of birth control. Frequently forming on the forehead, cheeks, nose and upper lip, these swathes of brown or greyish pigmentation can be a real cause of distress due to their size and location on the face.

Dry Skin

Flaky or scaly patches of skin may be easier to fix than hyperpigmentation, but they are harder to conceal with make-up and can be exacerbated by too many products.

Pollution, dehydration, fatigue, or a general imbalance within your body can all cause skin to flare-up in this manner.

The Fixes

1. Get serious about skincare

It is vital to adapt your skin

routine as you age, and as a rule this means investing in products of increasing quality as the years go by.

Dry skin benefits from creams and serums which are rich in oils or lipids and contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerine, whereas oily skin reacts better with water-based blends.

2. Exfoliate

Exfoliation is a vital tool in your fight against uneven skin as it sloughs away the dead, dry skin cells which cause a dull complexion and prevent creams and serums from reaching the deeper layers of the epidermis.

Beware exfoliating too aggressively and frequently though as this can upset the natural balance of your skin.

3. Use a dedicated pigmentation product

Hydroquinone, mulberry, kojic acid and glutathione are the ingredients to look out for when it comes to selecting a serum or cream to help tone the colour and lighten skin.

4. Eat your way even Whether you want plumper, smoother, luminous, or more even skin, it always helps to boost from the inside out.

There are many things that can contribute to a glowing complexion. Green tea is high in antioxidants, citrus offers a vitamin C boost, green vegetables contain vitamins B and E, while oily fish boasts omega 3.

Technology

Electric Avenue

We may not all be ‘scooter loopy’ about the prospect of two-wheeled electric vehicles zooming around our neighbourhoods, but the era of electric scooters and e-bikes is very much here, and with technological developments, this innovative mode of transport should become safer… for all of us.

Recent surge in popularity

Since Covid-19, and bolstered by the acceptance of electric cars, the adoption of twowheeled scooter and bike technology has boomed.

Other than steering and displaying basic road awareness, there’s pretty much no effort required to use an e-scooter, with pedalling on e-bikes also much easier than their manual counterparts.

Their popularity has also coincided with the recent boom in commercial takeaway companies, who are equipping delivery riders with their own vehicles.

Electric scooters and e-bikes are also economical, come with reasonable street cred, and of course the benefit of leaving the car at home is a blessing for governments around the world tasked with reducing emissions.

Legality

In the UK, there are 49 different e-scooter hire trials running, and these services remain the only way which you can legally operate such a vehicle in public.

It’s possible to use your own e-scooter in private space, but not outside on public highways or pavements.

The tech to be expected in 2023

While e-bikes are experiencing a much smoother ride through to public and legislative acceptance,

e-scooter companies are eager to prove their products are not dangerous, using technology to paint a picture of safety.

In the United States, company LINK has designed a system called Pedestrian Defense. This, incorporated into the scooter itself, detects improper usage and responds by sending the rider a warning. In extreme cases it can even stop the scooter completely.

Critics have suggested though that for as long as some of the density of our cities blocks a full signal, the system may be flawed.

The adaption of the technology may well be something riders voluntarily take, however, to the extent they piggyback a signal onto their own phone device. This is because the same system can also reward good riding with future product and hire discounts.

It can also warn riders if they park somewhere inappropriate, such as if they’re blocking a driveway, and can even link to social areas where, for instance, they can park up.

As far as e-bikes go, expected growth over the next five years is estimated at around 11% per year. As a combined elevation, that means 75% more e-bikes on the road than now. That, in turn, should lead to a huge decrease in price for a product that, at the moment, can comfortably cost as much as a motorcycle.

Breaking The Code

During the Second World War, tucked away in the country at Bletchley Park, the most brilliant mathematical minds in Britain were working to crack the complex German military code known as Enigma. At Bletchley, Turing's genius was recognised immediately and Churchill insisted he was given all the resources he needed in to break the code. His efforts shortened the war by two years and saved an estimated two million lives, but since his work was classified top secret for years after the war, no one knew how much was owed to him.

When he was later put on trial and publicly humiliated by the revelation of his sexuality, he chose to undergo chemical castration rather than serve a prison sentence, which left him physically and mentally debilitated. In 1954, he died by his own hand, aged 41, forgotten and alone.

Over half a century later, Turing is now lauded as a British hero. After being post humously pardoned by the Queen, his story was immortalised in the film The Imitation Game starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Derek Jacobi also took London and Broadway by storm in this exceptional biographical drama about a man who broke more than one code.

Hugh Whitemore’s compelling and ac claimed play investigates who he was, what happened to him and why. It’s a compassionate and poignant depiction of the life of an extraordinary man, his creativity, his yearning for love and companionship and his deep humanity.
