Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable! On 6th Feb 1952, Princess Elizabeth II ascended to the throne. 70 years later we are celebrating her Platinum Jubilee. The first British Monarch to ever achieve such a thing. You will all have heard much about the Queen over these last months and depending on when you are reading this, you may have recently celebrated her Jubilee with a street party. All these festivities have got me thinking. What makes a good ruler? Be it a monarch, prime minister, president, even a manager in an office or parent! So, I asked our community groups at The Way Coffee House:

What makes a good ruler? Among the answers were: • Dedicated

• Honesty/integrity

• Caring for those under their authority • Someone who blesses others • Leads by example

I must say I agree with them! I’d be very happy with someone like this in charge. Whatever your opinion of the monarchy, we must acknowledge and applaud the Queen’s dedication to her role. On her 21st birthday, the then Princess Elizabeth recorded a message declaring to the commonwealth that she was ready and willing to devote her life to the service of the people. Although she never expected it to happen so soon, at the age of 25 she found herself ascending to the throne and bearingthe responsibility of the promise she made. And as she did, she called upon the people - and also her God - for help. In her very first Christmas address in 1952 she

said, ‘Pray for me … that God may give me wisdom and strength to carry out the solemn promises I shall be making, and that I may faithfully serve Him and you, all the days of my life.’ Even though the Queen has the highest authority in the land she understood that her position was not one to use to exploit those under her rule, but to serve them which she has done for over 70 years. She truly has been a servant queen.

Throughout the years, the Queen has pointed to Jesus Christ as her ‘guide’, ‘inspiration’, and ‘rolemodel’. And we can see that her attitude of service is modelled by the only One who holds a higher authority than her, Jesus, the King of Kings and Queens.

In Philippians chapter 2 in the Bible, we read

that Jesus, “being in very nature God, did not

consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself

nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.” Jesus says in Mark chapter 10 verse 45, referring to himself, “the Son of Man did not

come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

King Jesus isn’t a tyrant or dictator but a loving and dedicated sovereign who loves his people. Even giving his life so that we might be saved, and the justice of God upheld. That’s the King who I, and Christians all around the world, serve. If you’d like to know more about him do come and see us at Christ Church Dunstable or in The Way, or why not send us an email? Warmly yours, Steve Neal Community Engagement Pastor

Revitalising Dunstable

The High Street Is Looking Up Central Bedfordshire Council wants to thank you for your patience during the Dunstable High Street improvements. We’re nearly there, just snagging and some other minor works which will soon be done. There has been plenty of activity going on with pedestrian improvements widening the footways with new seating areas and improving crossing points, including a diagonal crossing. Planters and rain gardens, coupled with drainage works, have been installed to reduce the likelihood of flooding. These improvements also prevent inconsiderate parking and enhance the environment for pedestrians. New street lighting reduces our carbon footprint. We’ve improved the cycleways to encourage sustainable methods of travel and we’ve introduced clearer signage for road users and information totems for pedestrians. This will help the High Street become a more pedestrian-friendly and attractive area.

Family Fun Event As a thank you for bearing with us during the construction phase, we are organising an event for the whole family to unveil your new improved town centre.

Saturday, 16th July 10am to 3pm at Middle Row Markets It’s free and everyone is welcome. Please come along.

A New Local Book

JOHN BUCKLEDEE illustrated by ROBIN DAVIES

14 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

A new book about the spectacular mock battles held in Dunstable in medieval times has just been published. Well-known illustrator Robin Davies has been working with John Buckledee, chairman of Dunstable and District Local History Society, to produce the 48-page book, titled Dunstable Tournaments. “We think it’s very unusual to try to show what medieval tournaments must have looked like,” says John. “There are lots of books with illustrations of the tournaments of later centuries, with knights jousting in single combat. But the earlier Dunstable events were much more dramatic. We’ve tried very hard to make the text and artwork as historically accurate as possible.” Hundreds of armoured horsemen would travel to the town and assemble into armies to practice their fighting skills and demonstrate their bravery. The mock battles would rage for many hours over large areas of open land. The lower slopes of the hills around Dunstable would have been ideal venues. The battles were strictly controlled and a licence issued by King Henry III in 1232 named just four towns where tournaments were permitted. Dunstable was one of them. A rare manuscript still exists which records the names of hundreds of knights who fought at Dunstable in 1309 during the tumultuous reign of King Edward II. And many details survive about a particularly elaborate tournament held by King Edward III at Dunstable in 1342. That was the last tournament of its type to be held in England. The book in full colour costs £9.99 and is suitable for all ages. It is published with financial support from the Medieval Dunstable project, for which John researched the tournaments in detail in 2013. Signed copies are available from the author at 69 Derwent Drive, Dunstable, LU6 3PB. Cheques payable to John Buckledee should also include £2.40 for postage and packing.

Community News From your local Houghton Regis store

Welcome to the June - July update from your local Morrisons Store. So much has been happening it’s hard to know where to begin! As part of International Womens Day (back in March!) we took great pleasure in recognising these three local ladies for the all work they have done and continue to do within our community. Sarah Gelsthorp - Event Organiser at HRTC, Denise Coates who raises awareness about Cancer and Susan Goodchild who works tirelessly to help people in the community. All three are an inspiration and have touched the lives of many local people. April brought Easter, which is always a very busy time for us, and thanks to your generous donations we raised quite an amount for our partner charity, Together For Short Lives. We raffled off a hamper of goodies which was won by one of our customers Sam who is pictured here collecting her prize. We were also happy to help in providing Easter Eggs for the local Council events. As part of our Support For The Forces campaign, in April we invited RAFA to the store to hold a collection. RAFA is a charity that provides welfare, friendship, help and support to all RAF personnel, veterans and their families so we were happy to have them and support such a worthy cause.

buckets on our checkouts recently. To date we have collected a total of £625.15 and all money raised will go towards helping provide relief for the people of Ukraine. I would like to thank everyone for donating and to let you know that, although the buckets have been removed from our checkouts, you can still make a donation to the appeal at the checkout, just let our cashier know as we now have a specific Ukraine Appeal Donations button on our tills.

Seeds Of Hope 2022

I am excited to announce that we are beginning work on a new Seeds Of Hope Project! You may remember back in 2020, we gave out hundreds of Sunflower seeds to our customers and throughout the local community and also asked for your messages to display on our Yellow Brick Wall Of Hope? The aim was to brighten up the town and also spread hope and cheer. This year we doing something similar but decided on the theme of Cornflowers for the project. We will once again be asking for your messages but this year we will be putting together Paper Chains Of Hope to decorate our windows and community board. Please remember to check the board for lots of local information and upcoming in-store activities. If you belong to a local group that is looking for space to hold your meetings, please ask for me at the store and I’ll be happy to give you more information. On a closing note, in June I will be visiting Keech Hospice Care in Luton, along with other local Morrisons Community Champions. Our charity partner, Together For Short Lives, works with Keech and we in Houghton Regis have been twinned with for the term of our charity partnership so I will be keen to find out how we can help. Keep Smiling! Until Next Time this is Sandra signing off Sandra

We provide youth clubs, drop-in centres, over 18 clubs, school holiday clubs, supported trips and activities. We own three luxury caravans and two holiday properties which provide our families with fun and affordable holidays. We are striving to raise funds for the charity constantly. Yet Another Dunstable 10,000 Miles Away

I’ve lived in Dunstable for well over 80 years and during that time have witnessed its growth from a small country town to somewhere which must have quadrupled its population (including Houghton Regis) to well over 50000 and, in consequence, has quadrupled (at least) its area. And it’s still growing - there’s a new town emerging on our northern edges beyond Houghton Regis. The area is now completely unrecognisable from when I was a boy. It’s called progress, I suppose. But, sometimes, I wonder if its future is to become a concrete jungle without many green spaces (that’s the trouble with being an old fart). I’ve discovered that, although there is only one Dunstable in England, there are other Dunstables around the world. For example, there’s one in Massachusetts, America and another in the wilds of Alberta, Canada. Both of these have been the subjects of previous articles and in the last one dealing with the Alberta Dunstable, I said that there was uncertainty as to why it was called Dunstable. But Elisabeth Pynn has come

to my rescue and tells me that the name was, indeed, pulled from a hat and that the son of a former Mayor, Robert Hambling, was the instigator. Robert (born 1859) had emigrated with his wife, Fanny Button and their five children, to the Lac la Nonne area of Alberta in 1906 and had built their own home as a settlement of five farms. Each emigrant had come from England and, in order to give their settlement a name, had each put the name of their home town into a hat and, hey presto, Dunstable was pulled out. Sadly Fanny died c.1914 but Robert lived until 1930 and was buried there as were his children Edith (1980), Robert (1952), Nora (1917), William (1942) and Eric (1970). But there’s yet another Dunstable, this time in Queensland, Australia. It, again, is in the middle of nowhere and is described as a “homestead” - which could mean something like one bloke and his dog - in the Central Highlands region about 20 miles from the nearest village of any size, Springsure (population approx 1000), and roughly 500 miles north west of Brisbane.

24 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

It’s virtually impossible to find any information on the internet regarding Dunstable per se and its only claim to fame seems to be geological. There is a rock formation from Devonian times called the Dunstable Volcanics which gives black basaltic soil. For further information, I am particularly indebted to David Readett - who lives in Queensland - and who has provided me with other snippets the likes of which I would have been unable to find by myself. David is the son of Graham, an Australian with whom I worked back in the Dark Ages (1950s) and with whom I am still in contact. This whole area of central Queensland was originally aborigine country, and when the first Europeans moved in and took over the land during the 1840s, there was considerable hostility and a number of skirmishes - especially

The Queen’s Jubilee: Platinum Pomp The work that goes on behind the scenes to mark Jubilee celebrations. Soldiers, horses and musicians It all starts to come to fruition on the Thursday, as Trooping the Colour marks the Queen’s birthday celebrations. Over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will come together in the traditional Parade. This is the first Jubilee celebration in which women will be included in the regiment, so additional preparations have been made to ensure the influx of first-time participants. RAF fly-past The traditional RAF fly-past completes the parade. The routine will have been practised countless times, though contrary to popular belief, this isn’t just a privilege reserved for the Queen. In the lead-up to the event, local communities have been invited to apply for their own fly-pasts. Jubilee beacons A fortnight before the Jubilee, 1,500 Platinum Jubilee beacons will have been distributed across the UK. This lighting of beacons first took place in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and are a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents.

service at St Paul’s Cathedral. Public safety elements come to the fore here, with tens of thousands of well-wishers lining the streets around the Thames as the Queen and family members attend. The Derby A day of leisure follows on the Saturday as the Queen visits The Derby at Epsom Downs. The event itself is over 240 years old and has garnered a different winner every year, and is open only to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies who have qualified for the race in the months preceding it. It remains the race that offers the biggest prize pot in the British racing – over £1.1million. 10,000 charitable tickets In the evening, Elizabeth returns to London for a party at Buckingham Palace. In the months leading up to the event, which features music and drama celebrating some of the most significant cultural

moments from The Queen’s seven-decade, over 10,000 tickets have been made available to charitable organisations. This has been two years in the planning. Street celebrations Finally, on Sunday, June 5th, communities across the UK are invited play out their own Platinum Jubilee street celebrations. Named The Big Lunch and launched in 2009, communities have been planning for months how they wish to mark the special day, with up over 1,500 applications made. 200 silk scarfs At the same time, the Platinum Jubilee Pageant sees artistic performers, dancers, musicians, military personnel, key workers and volunteers tell the story of the Queen’s 70-year reign. It includes a ‘River of Hope’ section comprised of 200 silk flags made by primary and secondary school children.

Jennie Bond A portrait of the Queen, by revered royal correspondent, Jennie Bond. Jennie Bond worked as Royal Correspondent for the BBC throughout the Nineties, covering some of the happiest, most tragic and scandalous moments that have befallen the family in recent times. “At the heart of it, I am fan of royalty and a fan of the family unit,” she says. “The trials that the Royal Family have been through are really no different to our own, and that should reassure them as well as us. They are human beings, and fate doesn’t shine brighter on them, because the everyday gains and losses that are just part of being alive. “Ultimately, it is how you come back from the challenges that really matters – and the Queen has, over the past seven decades, truly shown herself to be the most resilient person possible.” Bond is certainly relieved our Head of State has styled and

positioned herself with such a brand of quiet authority. “You could arguably look at almost everyone around the Queen and pick out faults and failings,” she says. “We’ve seen so many in recent years, to the extent we don’t need to name the culprits or the dealings. “Yet when you shine that light on the Queen it’s really difficult, at any point, to say, ‘you got that wrong’, or ‘this could have been done better’. “I think with Elizabeth we tend to take that for granted – we tend to just accept she is like that without contemplating what sort of royal landscape we would have with someone less capable at the helm.” As far as privacy goes, the

Queen values it, but respects the need to be visible and approachable. “Elizabeth is funny, charismatic, sharp as anything, but I think worn down at times by the sheer weight of what it is she has to do. It’s no easy task for someone in their nineties and no amount of wealth or privilege will compensate for what is an incredible commitment to her people,” says Bond. “I have had the honour of covering a lot of royal moments of great importance… moments in history I suppose – Princess Diana’s death, the Queen Mother’s death, the divorce of Charles and Diana. All those were very important moments I had to report on. But honestly, I think the jubilee celebrations and the pomp and pageantry is the most important. I know it signifies a simple anniversary – just a date in the calendar – but more than that it’s a way of looking back over the continued efforts of someone so brave and inspiring, and is the perfect way to say ‘thank you’ to a very special lady.”

The Queen in Decades

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee represents the perfect time for us to look back over seven decades of impeccable rule by Elizabeth II.

Even now, at 96, Elizabeth still undertakes her seemingly endless list of public and private duties with consummate ease, and to begin the long process of

preparations in the lead-up to her century milestone in 2026, we have compiled a collection of images of the Queen on every decade of her life.

Previous PreviousJubilees Jubilees Looking back over what was going on in the world during the previous Queen’s jubilees. For the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the planet feels as though it’s in a very uncertain place. Across Brexit, through Covid, and with the rumblings of conflict going on in so many parts of the world, perhaps we need the pomp and pageantry of celebrations to distract us, if only for a few days, from the ills elsewhere.

The line is arguably the most regular reminder of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. It’s no coincidence that it’s marked as silver on the map – it was originally going to be called the Fleet Line.

That’s not to say other significant anniversaries haven’t also come with a backdrop of challenges, though in looking back over previous jubilees, the Queen will at least reflect on the thing she drives for and cherishes with every day of an impeccable reign – progress. Leaving to one side the Diamond Jubilee, since it happened just a decade ago, we take a look at the three other significant jubilees marking our current Monarch’s reign. Silver Jubilee, 1977 The year 1977 saw the Ford Fiesta go on sale in the UK, and Concorde flights begin between London and New York. The Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, courted national headlines, while Amnesty International won the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize. Fleetwood Mac released their Grammy-winning album, Rumours, while a new underground line edged towards completion in the capital – the Jubilee Line!

seen three of her children’s marriages fail, while fire swept through Windsor Castle.

Elsewhere, the Jubilee Walkway around significant parts of London and the Jubilee Gardens, which are positioned in front of the London Eye, were significant additions to mark the occasion.

As a result, the Ruby Jubilee celebrations were perhaps more subdued than some of the others. A gala was held at the Royal Opera House; The Great Event at Earl’s Court brought back notions of Victorian opulence, while a jubilee lunch was held at Guildhall. However, in the immediate post-Diana era, and with a backdrop of public outcry over royals spending, and within that, the Queen agreeing to pay income tax, it was considered most appropriate to tone down celebrations.

Ruby Jubilee, 1992 The Queen’s Ruby Jubilee came in the same year as what she famously termed her ‘annus horribilis’ (a Latin phrase meaning ‘horrible year’). The preceding months had

Although supposed to open in 1977, digging work meant the deadline slipped by a couple of years, but it remains perhaps the most regular reminder of the 1977 Silver Jubilee, certainly to London’s commuters.

The Queen in her own words Quiet, impeccably mannered, but always addressing with poise and precision, what Queen Elizabeth II says is always worth hearing. The Queen and Diana “No one who knew Diana will ever forget her. Millions of others who never met her, but felt they knew her, will remember her. “She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness. I admired and respected

her - for her energy and commitment to others, and especially for her devotion to her two boys.” Serving her country “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.” Struggles “I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together.” Family “Like all best families, we

have our share of eccentricities, of impetuous and wayward youngsters and of family disagreements.” Contrition “To all those who have suffered as a consequence of our troubled past I extend my sincere thoughts and deep sympathy. With the benefit of historical hindsight we can all see things which we would wish had been done differently or not at all.”

Embracing the Abstract

Take your cues from the abstract expressionists for a look that is both cheery, individual and modern.

There are a multitude of reasons to invite abstract art into your living space – after all, where art is concerned, colour, texture and design is known to lift spirits, provoke creativity and stir interaction, so with that in mind you may as well surrender and let a little weirdness into your home. For the likes of Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, abstract expressionism was a way to defy the confines of postwartime life in 1940s New York through an artform that was deeply personal, spiritual and often unfathomable to anyone but the artist. To understand the misunderstood The abstract era represented the energy and creativity of the artist, and didn’t give much consideration to how others interpreted the work. After all, we all interpret Constable’s The Hay Wain or da Vinci’s Mona Lisa in different ways, so personal perception is ultimately at the epicentre of all art.

Abstract art uses emotion rather than the pursuit of image. As Pollock once said, “It’s not about what you paint, it’s about how you feel about what you paint.” Why abstract art works in the home Getting a little abstract with your décor can be a great form of escapism and personal expression. Easily created, and with the ability to synchronise and complement existing elements of a room, be that the colour of a wall, the texture of furniture or the period features present, all that removes you from a bespoke piece of harmonising art is your own ability to translate ideas into reality. Remember as well, abstract isn’t solely achieved on a flat of a canvas – this form of expressionism can be achieved by the collation and presentation of anything that syncs into a home environment.

36 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

How to pull off the look If your current colour scheme feels a little neutral, adding a bold print – be it a throw, cushion or framed picture – is a great way to apply a little abstract flair. If patterns aren’t your thing, consider livening up your lounge with block colours; perhaps a Rothko-inspired wall of two shades or a bright-coloured velvet sofa (citrus hues are particularly hot right now). The beauty of this trend is that it requires no ambitious makeovers, and can be achieved with the addition of a few key pieces. Let a simple geometric print or a statement piece of furniture become the star of an otherwise forgettable room. Alternatively, dedicate an entire space to retro hues, bold designs and metallic highlights. Either way, the invigorating energy of the abstract movement is bound to fill your heart and your home with joy.

Home & Garden

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the pests that parade our petunias… and more. We all want our outdoor spaces to be as beautiful and as thriving as possible, yet by employing a host of natural ways to put pests off, we can keep our courtyards canny, and our green spaces chemical-free. The best way to do this is to think about natural barriers. These, if done well, can comfortably eradicate snails and slugs and all those little creatures who slide and slime over our prized plants. Any type of copper can be used to make a wall that electrically shocks their body, deterring them from moving further forward, while wood ashes or crushed eggshells also work to put those meddling molluscs off their lunch.

but keep away from kids, avoid contact with your skin and eyes, and use within a fortnight! It’s also worth reminding ourselves that not all bugs and beasties are bad news, and done well, you can encourage some into your garden. Plant mint, fennel, dill, yarrow, sunflowers and dandelions will attract ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings, all of which will happily feast on your aphids. Birds and

hedgehogs eat slugs and snails, beetles and insects… as do frogs and toads.

While most people consider sprays and pesticides as the best way to keep unwanted intruders away, there are a range of natural squirts that do the same thing. For instance, garlic and chilli may be a culinary staple, but they hold a secret power for gardeners looking to dispose of invaders in a natural manner.

Finally, try a trap. Earwigs can devastate seedlings, so if they do pose a problem in your garden, try filling a few plastic flowerpots with straw and balancing them upside down on sticks to attract the pests.

Combine crushed garlic and chilli (powdered chilli will do if you don’t have fresh) with one tablespoon of vegetable oil and a small amount of dishwashing liquid or soap flakes. Leave to soak overnight in a jar, then strain and spray on plants. The spray is very effective towards aphids and caterpillars –

Removing pests and critters the natural way takes effort, imagination and no small amount of patience, but opening your garden to nature’s bounty, whilst preserving as much life as possible, is surely the best and most satisfying way to enjoy the fruits of your labour.

38 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

The earwigs crawl up the poles and take shelter in the pots at night and you can humanely dispose by emptying them in the morning.

Health & Fitness

Get up, stand up

If you’ve been feeling sluggish over the first part of the year, now is the perfect time to get outside and rediscover your fitness, with brighter days and longer, warmer nights combining to create the perfect condition by which you can restore body and mind. 1. Take a hike The dawning of summer represents a wonderful time for us to surround ourselves in nature as both plant and animal life are born anew. If you’re lucky enough to have access to woodlands or fields, hiking is a wonderful way to gently reinstate your fitness with little risk of injury, whilst seeing and exploring new places. If the terrain feels too much for you, even a brisk walk round your local park offers real benefits to your body so long as you maintain a steady pace. The science: Hiking is a powerful cardio workout that can lower your risk of heart disease, improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels, boost bone density (since walking is a weight-bearing exercise), strengthen your core and

improve balance. It’s also great for weight control.

be fiercely personal or totally sociable.

2. Jog on For those with a little more vigour to spare, try starting your day with a gentle jog. There is no personal exercise that tests body and lungs, though sensible repetition will see the challenge seem less on each subsequent time you pull on those trainers.

The science: Cycling is brilliant cardiovascular fitness, firing increased muscle strength, flexibility and joint mobility. It also helps posture, strengthens bones and decreases body fat.

The science: Jogging or running helps you maintain a healthy body weight and boost your immune system. You’ll also sleep better and live longer, while recent research suggests time spent exercising intensely enables the brain to work out problems, making you happier and smarter. 3. Upcycle Cycling is invigorating, lifeaffirming and can even provide you with a sense of exhilaration. It’s also a pursuit that can

4. Just breathe You don’t have to break out in a sweat to do something really positive for your body, and if all you’re looking for is a little peace and quiet, then meditating in nature is about as healing as it gets. All you need is a park bench or garden, with perhaps some chirping birds to provide the perfect soundtrack! The science: Slowing down and tapping into deep breathing triggers the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s rest and digest. This leads to calmness, rationality and peace of mind.

Looking Up! Bedfordshire’s Night Sky June & July 2022 See Blue Vega and Yellow Arcturus: Two of the brightest stars in the summer sky show a striking colour difference when viewed against each other. Almost overhead on summer evenings is Vega. If you compare Vega to the next brightest star high up to the southwest, Arcturus, you’ll see Vega has a blue tinge to its light, indicating that it is a hot star, and Arcturus appears more yellow and so has a cooler surface temperature. Move your eyes quickly from one star to the other and the colour difference is quite pronounced.

Two bright planets return to the sky this summer. Best visible an hour before dawn from mid-June onwards Jupiter stands out as a bright star-like object low to the southeast horizon. About an extended forearm’s width across the sky to the right is Saturn. The ringed planet is dimmer to the naked eye than Jupiter but is still easy to identify as no stars in the vicinity are as bright as Saturn.

Finance

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at haggling, and discusses whether it’s a dying art into which we need to breathe new life. We have a real aversion to haggling in this country – in fact, I would say we are some of the world’s worst hagglers. We’ve lost the bravado and confidence we once had to cut a deal, yet if you master haggling, and it is an artform, it’s fun and actually adds a layer of enjoyment to the process of buying and selling. Most people encounter haggling when it comes to their utilities and other service providers, and in simple terms, if you don’t haggle when it comes to renewing your broadband or TV package or mobile contract or car insurance or whatever it is, you are simply costing yourself money that could translate to a meal, or a deposit for a car, or a holiday.

available elsewhere, because that’s your target. Usually these best offers will be in the form of ‘new customer’ initiatives, though as an existing customer who has already paid into the pot, why the hell should you not be qualifying for the same deals. At the end of the day, a lot of haggling comes down to being honest, forceful and confident, but also charming and friendly. Explain your budget, explain the better deal being offered by another provider, or by your own provider to new customers, and make it clear you will leave unless something changes.

The first part of haggling where utilities are concerned is to get on price comparison sites in order to get a benchmark of what is

48 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

Of course, many of us know those best deals come when, as an existing customer, you get put through to disconnections – it’s the point at which your provider is really just one step away from losing you for good, and it is those customer service agents who have the ability to get you a much better price. Ultimately, it is your negotiation here that will count, but if you don’t get the deal you think you deserve, my advice is to walk away. If you can negotiate a new deal, don’t get caught on a long agreement, and do remember to phone back to renegotiate again when any promotional period ends. Mostly, be charming, friendly and forceful, and enjoy the process of haggling!

Toddington Open Gardens 2022 Saturday 2nd July: 11.00am - 5.00pm Sunday 3rd July: 1.00pm - 6.00pm

There will be about 10 gardens opening (most for both days but the programme will show if there are any only open on one of the days). Tickets cost £5 per adult – accompanied children are free. Tickets can be used on both days if visitors want to take the tour more slowly. Tickets can be bought at the Wilkinson Church Hall (next to the church in the centre of the village) or at any of the participating gardens which will be sign-posted. There will be a plant stall in the churchyard and refreshments and other things in the Wilkinson Church Hall. The event is run by Friends of Toddington Parish Church (registered charity number 1028238) raising money for the restoration and maintenance of St George of England Church, Toddington which is celebrating its 800th anniversary in 2022. We do hope that you will be able to come along and support this event. There are a range of gardens all within walking distance and we are sure you will have a thoroughly enjoyable visit.
