When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear Stephen Moon it became evident that the value of saving their customers money has been held dear for
a number of years. In addition since starting the business in 2005, Cloudy2Clear have committed to supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public both time and money.

The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “By doing this we make the customer considerable savings and there is much less upheaval in the family home. Also, whether communities find themselves in a financial crisis or not, saving money when you don’t need to waste it is always the sensible option, and our service does just that”.

What makes Hospice at Home Volunteers the success it is today?
Success is down to three things :
- Our wonderful volunteers led by Maureen our Volunteer Manager and supported by Colleen
- Our dedicated group of trustees, and
- Our supporters who continually support our fundraising activities and share our work across the community
The Role of a Volunteer
Our volunteers offer a free service that provides strength and encouragement at a difficult time to both clients with a life limiting illness and to their immediate carer(s), offering practical help.
The support provided is flexible, depending upon the individual client’s needs, but could include…
* spending time with clients, enabling their carers to have a two or three hour break
* accompanying clients on trips to the shops or a favourite venue/event
* offering companionship
* signposting to information for further help
Our volunteers do not replace or take over the care or the support provided by the statutory services, nor do we provide direct personal nursing care or domestic services.
All our volunteers are fully trained and are DBS checked before visiting the client.
. We also hold support volunteer meetings once a month, as a great opportunity to share stories and advice from volunteer to volunteer.
If you would like to have more information about becoming a volunteer please contact: hello@hospiceathomevolunteers.co.uk
What’s involved in being a Trustee?
Our trustees are all volunteers who dedicate their time to the charity.
We meet every 2 months to discuss the progress of the charity against our strategic delivery plan; consider new opportunities and talk about our future focus and delivery.
Our trustees come from very varied backgrounds. Some are in full time employment, some retired and others are carers to their loved ones. All our trustees are committed to ensuring our volunteers and clients are provided with the best service possible and all the support that is needed.
We currently are looking for three trustees to come on board to support our strategic delivery to 2030. We are specifically keen to attract people with HR, social media and marketing experience. If you have 3 a 5 hours a month to offer please contact us.
Our volunteers and trustees also help with our many fundraising events. These range from local fairs, market stalls, festivals,, community activities etc.
For 2025 we have a few events planned, including:
- 18th September - Golf Day in conjunction with Rotary Club of Dunstable
- 9th October - Vantage Restaurant goes “Through the Decades”
- 6th December - “Caution Horses” entertains with Christmas Supper
Follow us on Facebook and Instagram, or via our website www.hospiceathomevolunteers.co.uk/ for all our event details.
As always we would love to catch up and talk about the work of the charity, please contact Liz Jones, Chair of HHV, via hhvchair@gmail.com

A new banking hub for Dunstable is on the way. Whoever you bank with, local people will be able to use it for everyday banking like withdrawing and depositing cash, paying bills, and getting general financial advice. It will be staffed by Post Office workers. While digital banking is growing, many residents and businesses still rely on cash and face-to-face banking services. I am pleased that the Dunstable Banking Hub (one of 350 nationwide pledged by the Government) will ensure that they continue to have access to these vital services.
The new average speed cameras are now live on the dangerous stretch of the A5 between Thorn Roundabout near Dunstable, through Hockliffe and onwards. Sadly since 2017, there have been 27 serious collisions. I welcome this investment. I have been out on the road with Highways England looking at how these changes are helping to slow traffic and hopefully prevent future accidents. Work will also start in June on improvements to the A5/ B5120 roundabout including resurfacing and new signage to make it safer.
Thank you to everyone who organised VE Day celebrations. As part of the 80th anniversary I launched a campaign for a permanent memorial for the brave personnel (mainly women) who served at Bedfordshire’s secret wartime site, Q Central, near Stanbridge. At the largest phone exchange in the world they played a vital role in co-ordinating the Battle of Britain and D-Day and were crucial in the path to VE Day. Find out more and show your support at www.qcentral.co.uk.
I’m pleased Bedfordshire Police will receive an extra £7 million-plus to fight serious and organised crime. In Parliament I voted for the new Crime and Policing Bill, which includes over 50 new crime-fighting measures.
A local worker from Dunstable told me they had to wait 12 months for a test. Now, after pressure from the Transport Committee that I sit on in Parliament, the Government has said it will unblock 10,000 extra tests a month, aiming to cut average wait times to seven weeks.
I welcome new powers that allow councils to crush vehicles used by fly-tippers and make offenders pay the cost, saving local taxpayers’ money. I’ve raised concerns about the impact of council’s new tidy tip booking system, and want to see full use of these powers across Bedfordshire. Don’t forget, as ever, if you have any ideas you would like me to follow up or issues I can help with, please get in touch: contact@alexmayer.co.uk or 01525 301390

Introducing Kidd, a handsome lurcher aged two years. This young man has impressed us all with his happy, easy going and affectionate nature. He is playful and sociable with people and dogs and we think he would fit in well with a family who have other dogs, pending introductions. Kidd loves his walks but will need to stay on the lead for a while at least. He will need a secure garden, a couple of walks a day and a nice comfy sofa to curl up on. Lurchers really aren’t very demanding! Please website for details about adoption and an application form when adopting an adult dog any resident

Following the death of Henry’s legitimate son, William, in the “White Ship Disaster” (1120), the problem of his succession loomed and Henry forced his barons and earls in England and Normandy to give their allegiance to his daughter, Maud, as his successor.
But their agreement was very reluctant because Maud was married to the Count of Anjou and meant a) the English didn’t want a return to French kingship after the “English” Henry, b) Maud was most unpopular and nobody liked or trusted her and c) women in general were regarded as being too irrational and too emotional to be monarchic rulers.
This prompted the 19 year civil war which lasted until 1154 but Stephen held a Christmas Court at Dunestaple in 1136 (before things got really bad).
But Robert of Gloucester (Henry’s favourite illegitimate son and Maud’s half brother) gave his consenteven though many in England were alternatively rooting for the very popular and affable Stephen (Henry’s favourite nephew). It was all very confused and confusing - but nothing happened whilst Henry was alive. However, in 1135, Henry was again banging heads together in Normandy but was taken ill with food poisoning – “a surfeit of lampreys” - and died a week later.
Both Maud and Robert were at Henry’s bedside in Normandy but Stephen was in Boulogne and, on the news of Henry’s death, he quickly crossed the Channel and was encouraged to usurp the throne in December 1135 in defiance of Henry’s wishes.
During the fighting Robert was “Empress” Maud’s general. But his forces (mainly in the west country) were no stronger than Stephen’s and the war was largely a stalemate from start to finish. It was mainly fought by an army on one side capturing a castle on the other side - it was castles, castles, castles - backwards and forwards. Neither side really won anything conclusive but Maud was determined not to give up her claim for the throne of England (made on April 7, 1141). When she tried to gain entry into London to be recognised as the rightful monarch, she was blocked because she was so unpopular. With regard to “castle warfare”, the barons became individual war lords (like many present day despots) whose soldiers were their personal and feudal serfs. The ordinary folk weren’t really bothered either way - life was rough enough anyway irrespective of who the monarch was. So the civil war was not between the people as such but between the barons. And they often changed sides if they felt that one side was gaining an advantage: ie they were not very honest in their supposed loyalties and were fighting simply to feather their own nests. Have times really changed in 900 years ? Not really !
Dunestaple, by NOT having an aristocratic Lord of
the Manor (it had Prior Bernard instead), supported neither side. However, areas round about were caught up to greater or lesser degree, eg Bedford Castle, Luton Castle, Berkhamsted Castle. But Dunestaple (like so many other places) suffered from one army or the other “living off the land” and emptying the town of its provisions.
At one point during the war, Stephen had Maud in his grasp but, chivalrously, let her go since she promised to be a good girl! But immediately afterwards, she reneged on her promise and resumed battle. Later, when Stephen was captured, he was locked in chains and thrown in Bristol Castle dungeon - thereby showing Maud’s true colours! Then, soon after, when Robert was captured, an exchange was made - Stephen for Robert. It was all rather pointless and achieved little. But the national and international politics; the deceit on both sides; barons vascillating back and forth; the considerable brutality, maiming and killing made this a most devastating period of history. Later chroniclers said that “Christ and his saints must have been asleep” such that this civil war has earned the alternative title of “The Anarchy”.

Eventually, the two sides had fought themselves to a standstill; Stephen’s heir, Eustace, had died; and it was clear that peace would only come if Stephen recognised Maud’s son, Henry (born 1133), as his successor. So after 1153, Stephen was allowed to live out his life on the understanding that Henry would be the next king. There followed a brief, uneasy peace and in 1154, Stephen (now 58 years old, war weary and frail) and Maud’s son Henry (plus various courtiers) “met at Dunestaple” to seal the peace and agree the succession. Stephen died soon afterwards on 25th October, 1154, and Henry was later crowned Henry 2nd on 19 December, 1154 at Westminster Abbey. So ended Norman rule which had lasted through 4 kings from 1066 to 1154, ie an 88 year dynasty England now began the Plantagenet (or Angevin) dynasty - 331 years and 14 kings from 1154 to 1485. The first Plantagenet king, Henry 2nd, was the strongest ruler in western Europe at the time - and held lands from Scotland to the Pyrenees (but he also had very serious domestic problems - see later).

Miso is gaining in popularity, and for good reason, as its subtle, umami flavour adds a satisfying depth to both sweet and savoury cuisine.
In this excellent recipe, seafood supremo Rick Stein uses it to great effect, creating a satisfying and healthy salmon supper for a dinner party.
1. Boil the noodles for 3mins in a large pan, drain and rinse under cold water through a sieve and set aside to drain completely.
2. Heat the grill to high. Mix together the miso paste, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce and paprika to make the miso glaze and brush over the salmon fillets with a pastry brush. Lay the salmon skin side down on a greased baking tray and grill for 6-8mins until just cooked through.
Serves 4
3. Heat the oil in a wok and stir-fry the garlic, ginger, spring onions and chillies for a couple of mins until soft, then add the cooked noodles, beansprouts and coriander. Toss everything together until well combined and turn o the heat.
4. To finish, stir the fish sauce into the stir-fried vegetables and noodles, then pile onto plates, topping with the salmon.
• 4 salmon fillets, about 140g each
• sunflower oil, for greasing
For the miso glaze
• 2 tsp brown miso paste
• 2 tsp balsamic vinegar
• 2 tsp soy sauce
• 1 tsp Spanish smoked paprika
For the noodles
• 200g dried rice noodles
• 3 tbsp sunflower oil
• 3 garlic cloves, finely grated
• 25g ginger, finely grated
• 8 spring onions, sliced
• 2 medium red chillies, thinly sliced
• 100g beansprouts

Sometimes the internet makes suggestions that are too strange to be believable; however, the following gardening hacks are actually pretty useful.
Coffee grounds
Let’s start with one that’s pretty well-known, and that is repurposing coffee grounds as fertiliser. They are rich in nitrogen, which is great for your soil, and all you need to do is simply scatter them around the base of your plants or mix them into your compost pile.
Banana peels
You’ve heard of a rose among the thorns, but have you heard of a rose among the banana peels? Packed with potassium, which is essential for plant health, burying banana peels near the roots of your rose bushes will promote lush blooms as the peels decompose and release nutrients into the soil.
Eggshells
No one likes walking on eggshells, especially pests like slugs and snails. Scatter the crushed shells around the base of your plants. The sharp edges will deter these pests, whilst also providing calcium to your soil.
Fish poop
If you have an aquarium, don’t throw out the dirty water during cleaning. This water is rich in nutrients from fish waste and can be used to feed your plants, giving them a natty nutrient boost.
Milk
Powdery mildew can be a common problem for many plants. Use a mixture of one part milk to two parts water and spray it on affected plants. The milk helps to prevent the fungus from spreading… weird but true!
Tin foil
Do plants believe in aliens? Who knows, but they certainly appreciate the protective power of tin foil. If you’re growing plants indoors and they need more light, create a reflective surface using tinfoil. Place the foil around your plants to reflect light back onto them, helping them grow stronger.
Human hair
Believe it or not, human hair can deter pests like deer and rabbits. Scatter it liberally around your garden and the scent will keep these animals at bay.
Cinnamon
Sprinkle cinnamon on seedlings to prevent damping-off disease, a fungal infection that can kill young plants. Cinnamon has natural antifungal properties that protect your plants, with not a pumpkin-spiced latte in sight!
Nappies
Place a clean, unused (it is important that it is not used!) nappy at the bottom of your plant pots before adding soil. The nappy will help retain moisture, keeping your plants hydrated longer.

Pilates may be a form of low-impact exercise, but it is terrific for building core strength, flexibility and overall body awareness. Here’s why and how to join the strong and lean crew.
One of the primary benefits of Pilates is its emphasis on core strength. The core, often referred to as the powerhouse of the body, includes the muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips and pelvis. Pilates exercises are designed to target these muscles, leading to improved stability, posture and overall strength.
Pilates incorporates a variety of stretching exercises that help increase flexibility and range of motion. Flexibility is crucial for maintaining joint health, preventing muscle imbalances and reducing the risk of injuries.
All that gazing at your phone and hunched over your desk can negatively impact posture. Modern life is bad for your posture, but Pilates can both strength your upper body and realign your posture.
Pilates is an effective way to tone and sculpt the muscles without adding bulk.
The exercises involve controlled, precise movements that engage various muscle groups, leading to lean and defined muscles.

This exercise targets the abdominal muscles and improves hip mobility.
• Lie on your back with your left leg extended on the mat and your right leg up
• Circle your right leg clockwise, then counterclockwise, with core engaged

If you want to sketch quickly and create more life in your observations Urban Sketching is for you. Have a practise with this image. In pencil lightly sketch the image. Time yourself 10 minutes for this first task. Then tweak the sketch by drawing 3 cube shapes of different sizes for the tower on the left of the image and a triangular top to give your sketch some depth. Draw another cube shape for the dome to sit on top. Suggest windows and doors with simple shapes. Now, use a fine liner black permanent pen to almost draw a continuous line around your sketch and the shapes you have made (hold your pen loosely). It does not matter if the lines are not straight. Once you have a pen sketch copy the contrasting colours in watercolour for your building and leave plenty of white paper. Then create a blue sky leaving white around the edges. Do this exercise many times and see what happens. Our new term begins in September. Come and join us. We have now moved to Dagnall Village Hall. This image was created by one of our students. We have an India sketching trip in November and a summer school in August 2025 Follow us on Facebook and Instagram email: drmooresartcourse@gmail.com

Go Summer Night Satellite Tracking:
Look up on a clear night this summer and you’ll likely see points of white light slowly gliding across the sky. These are not high altitude aircraft but sunlight reflecting off some of the 12,000+ satellites circling Earth right now. The majority are communication satellites for TV, radio and internet access. There are also huge numbers of satellites for navigation systems, such as GPS, and smaller numbers for science, earth observation and military purposes. Space junk, including defunct satellites and rocket boosters from previous space missions, reflect in the sunlight too and can be tracked from Earth. To find out which satellites you might be seeing download a satellite tracker app on your smart device and go satellite hunting!
