Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable! One of the most memorable meals of my life was when I was back living in Albania. I was invited to dinner by a family attending a local church up in the old town of Gjirokaster. There are various customs in Albania that I wasn’t prepared for; especially coming from a British background. To the table came some chicken - and some vegetables, following that came a loaf of bread, potatoes, and a mound of rice. Then a plate of pasta was set in front of me. As I ate, I was offered more and more, and being British it was difficult to refuse as my generous hosts insisted I had more. It wasn’t until I had been there for a year or two I learned various tricks to be able to refuse more effectively. “S’ka më vende!”/“There’s no room left!” is usually successful. Coming from a comfortable background and entering into another’s world can be a very humbling experience. Albania isn’t known for its wealth. Areas I was going to were very poor and I got to witness a different kind a wealth; a wealth of generosity and hospitality in the face of poverty. Sadly, this issue of poverty isn’t exclusive to other parts of the world but is very real to many in our Dunstable community. Christ Church Dunstable is proud to partner with the Dunstable Food Bank which is part of Trussell Trust. We, along with New Life Church and St Augustine’s church, provide emergency food parcels to those in need throughout the week. The need for the Foodbank is ever growing and we are so thankful to all of you who have donated food and toiletries, as well as financial gifts. It is thanks to you that we are able to run the Foodbank week by week.

• Donations received per month: 3900kg • Stock given out to clients per month: 4031kg • Number of people/households fed over the last 6 months in total: 2753 people (44% of whom were children) / 930 households. Statistics on a page can look very impersonal but it is important to remember that each of these numbers represents an individual or a family that for whatever reason has found it difficult to provide for themselves.

Why do we run Foodbank?

Having considered the stats, the answer may seem obvious: because there is a great need! But the answer runs deeper than that too. As Christians we feel called by God to do what we can to help other people. God calls us to love others as he loves us; which is a sacrificial love as he sent his one and only Son, Jesus, to die for us, providing for our greatest need; our need of forgiveness. For us Foodbank is an act of love. But it is also an act of worship.

Jesus says in Matthew 25:35, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”

He explains that serving others in this way is the same as serving the Lord himself. If you require the use of Foodbank then please see the timetable across the page. If you need emotional, spiritual, or personal support then you’re always welcome to visit us here at Christ Church Dunstable.

These stats are based on averages over the last 6 Warmly yours, Steve Neal Community Engagement Pastor. months: Website: ccd.church • Telephone: 01582 661621 • Email: hello@ccd.church

Summer Fun From CBC

Council launches free booklet full of fun summer activities for parents and children Central Bedfordshire Council has launched a free summer activities booklet, full of fun activities for parents and young children! The booklet contains over 30 fun ideas that can be done with little or no resources, or things that might already be around the house. The activities are also designed to help young children develop skills such as hand eye co-ordination and counting and help them learn new words and develop an awareness of nature. The activity booklets are free and are available to collect from Central Bedfordshire’s Children’s Centres. They have been designed so parents and children can tick off each activity once they have completed it. Some of the activities include: Planting a sunflower seed to help children understand nature, the life cycle of a plant and how to measure Making rainbow fruit ice lollies to help children understand melting and freezing. Going on a summer flower hunt to spot buttercups and daisies, helping children to learn new words and develop their observational skills. Cllr Sue Clark, Executive Member for Families and Education, said: “We hope our new free booklet will keep parents and children busy this summer! It’s full of low and no cost ideas which, as well as being lots of fun, will help young children develop skills in readiness for starting school and beyond. Please do visit your local Children’s Centre to pick up a copy and enjoy working your way through the activities!” Central Bedfordshire has Children’s Centres in Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Leighton Buzzard, Sandy, Shefford, Stotfold and Flitwick. Contact details are available at: https://cbc.cloud.servelec-synergy.com/ synergyfis/Childrenscentres.aspx The Council has also developed winter and spring activity booklets, which will be available from Children’s Centres in November and March respectively.

Community News From your local Houghton Regis store

Hello again to everyone in our community! What a start to Summer! I do hope you are all enjoying the lovely weather but please keep safe and remember to stay hydrated and wear your sun screen and hats! So, what’s been happening since the last issue? To begin with I can tell you that donations to local events and organisations amounted to over £200 with more fund raising planned during August right through to October. We have also been holding various events for NHS charities, one event, held in our cafe, saw 5p from every hot drink sold donated to the NHS Big Tea weeks campaign. Fundraising for our partnership charity Together For Short Lives is now in full swing and I would like to thank everybody that has donated to this wonderful charity. If you would like to donate it couldn’t be easier, either use one of the collection tins or let your cashier know at the till and they will be able to add your donation to your bill. I would also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to Houghton Together who have donated over £160 to buy products for the local food bank. The food bank provides us with a list of items that they are running short of so I was able to put the money to best use. We also use this list to make our ‘Pick Up Packs’ which are available for customers to buy and donate. These can be found near the swing gates at the front of the store. I realise that at this time that things might be tight and there are lots of thoughts around the cost of living so I have made up bags to range between 98p and £3. If you can, and would like to donate a pack simply pop one in your trolley and take it to the checkout. So far, with the help of our amazing community, we have managed to donate £3,680 worth of food and supplies to the local food banks. This really shows how much the community supports each other Out in the community, I had the great pleasure of attending a local event to mark the anniversary of Houghton Regis Memorial Hall and got to meet the

16 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

amazing team and also learn lots about the history of the hall. I also had the great pleasure in visiting St Thomas Whitehead School where I spent the morning talking to the children about how the food we eat gets from field to plate and how long process can take for some of the items to get to our stores from the time of harvesting. The children were particularly interested to learn about healthy eating and products from the ‘Save The Rainforest’ and ‘Fair Trade’ lines. The children were truly amazing. Thank you Thomas Whitehead for allowing me to come in and I look forward to arranging another visit in the near future. Once again I’d like to remind you about the Community Notice Board in store. This board is there for you to use to promote local, non-profit organisations, as well as to inform people of what’s going on in Houghton Regis. It is a great source of information for the community so please take a look when you visit. Unfortunately we do not permit advertising for businesses or for-profit organisations and all notices should be checked by either the Community Champion or a member of staff at customer services prior to posting on the board. If you are a local charity (registered) or fund raise on behalf of a local charity, please get in touch if you would like help with any fund-raising events. Pop into the store or send me a letter and we can see what help we may be able to provide, in the form of a donation or practical help such as the use of a room in store for small meetings. We love to help! There are many things to look forward to later this year, The Skate Park competition, Houghton Rocks, The poppy Appeal as well as in store events for our charity but more about that next time... On a final note, do you have a More Card? If you do, watch out for up and coming events that will be free for you to join in. Not a more card owner? Don’t miss out! Make sure you enquire about one next time you are at the store! Until next time, have a fantastic summer, Keep Smiling Sandra - Community champion Morrisons Houghton Regis

New 10 Week Course

Scientists and Engineers through the ages There is so much in our everyday life which we take for granted - and feel that the technology has always been there. But it hasn't always been there; the underlying scientific principles had first to be discovered and then turned into something of practical use. This course takes us from the Ancient Greeks and their struggles to convince the "powers that be" that natural phenomena have a rational rather than a mystical basis. We then look at pioneers such as Leonardo da Vinci, Copernicus and Galileo before moving on to such as Hooke, Newton and Einstein. Finally, we consider the great engineers of the 18th and 19th centuries like Stephenson, Watt and Brunel. The 10 week course given by Paul Heley B.Sc, M.Phil commences on 20th September at 10.30 am and the price is £50 for the complete course or £6 for an individual talk. "Drop-ins" are very welcome. The venue is the LUBYA building, Manchester Place, Dunstable. (LU6 1HT) Any questions or to register please contact Carole Smart on 07917083850 or email smart.carole@talk21.com

Bedfordshire Walking Festival 2022 Bedfordshire Walking Festival 2022 10th to 18th September inclusive

Programme www..bedswalkfest.co.uk

Organised by Bedfordshire Ramblers & supported by Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire & Luton Councils Plus many other organisations.

The 12th annual Bedfordshire Walking Festival starts at 8-00am on Saturday 10th September and finishes on Sunday afternoon 18th September. There are walks every day across the county ranging from short informative heritage walks of approximately two hours to morning and afternoon half day walks of between 5-8 miles and long walks of twelve miles up to the 40 mile Greensand Challenge taking place over the last weekend. This year, following a number of enquiries, a one day practical training course on how to use apps and maps on Sunday 11th at Harlington has been included. If you have ever thought about getting out into the countryside but feel it would better to go with others, or if you are new to Bedfordshire and want to see what the county has to offer the festival is an ideal opportunity and one of the great things about living in this part of the county is the accessibility 22 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

to the countryside and its network of well maintained paths. The festival has over 40 walks on the programme and one every day across this part of the county starting on Saturday 10th with morning walks at Harlington and Leighton Buzzard. If informative Heritage guided walks appeal to you on Monday morning a Greensand Western Parkland tour and on Wednesday morning The Leighton Buzzard Town Centre story. For those who prefer to stride out and cover the miles on Tuesday 13th defy superstition and enjoy a 12 mile circular starting from Barton-Le-Clay or why not accept the Greensand Ridge Path Challenge of 40 miles over the weekend of 17th and 18th September. In other parts of the county Thursday 15th offers an opportunity to mix walking with river cruising to create a great day out for groups and individuals as the festival has teamed up with the award winning John Bunyan Boat. A morning informative walk from Priory Marina to Great Barford is followed by an afternoon leisurely cruise back to Bedford. Flexibility is the key on this one because if the walk is too far for you there are options to join or leave at Willington and whatever you decide to do the cost of the trip is the same at just £20 per person. Booking necessary. www.johnbunyanboat.org. These are just some of the walks there are plenty more across the county. Almost all the walks are free and do not require booking enabling you to just turn up a short time before the start but if you have a query please contact the walk leader. Some walks require booking so please book and not just turn up. Several walking events have a cost involved and this is shown to avoid hidden surprises. Programmes are now available both in printed form and on the festival web site www.bedswalkfest.co.uk.

Old Measurements Of

Length, Distance And Area Many people who are much younger than me (that’s not difficult!) and who have been brought up on the Metric system (where everything is based on the number 10, eg 10 little’uns = 1 big’un and 10 big’uns = 1 giant, and so on) must be thankful that they didn’t have to go through the agonies of the old Imperial system which was anything but regular and usually based on something historical. The Imperial system regarding length (and distance and area) is particularly prone to such nightmares and I can remember that, as a boy, it took a long time to get even the important units, and how they related to each other, sorted out in my head. But there were still loads of obscure units which were left over - units you never hear of today. The keystone of Imperial length is the Inch - this is the basic unit - and most of the other lengths and distances are multiples of this basic. There are, however, some units which are less than an inch and these, like the majority of early units, are derived from agriculture (because in medieval and pre-medieval days, nearly everyone worked on the land so such things were familiar). Let’s make a start ; and you’ll be pleased to know that you recognise a lot of these units. Although the Inch is the basic unit, it is the barleycorn and the poppyseed which are the first exemplars and we have 4 poppyseeds = 1 barleycorn and 3 barleycorns = 1 inch I can remember that an inch was either 3 ears of barley laid side by side, or it was the distance made by a bent thumb. But the latter is much bigger than an inch in my case - perhaps the original thumb belonged to a king’s young son or his missus! I also feel that 3 ears of barley laid side by side are bigger than what I know

24 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

as an inch (but maybe crops were physically smaller in medieval times?). In the metric system, an inch is 2.54 cms (centimetres). After the inch, we get into more familiar territory and have 12 inches = 1 foot ; 3 feet = 1 yard ; 1760 yards = 1 mile (where a foot is roughly 30cms , a yard is a bit less than a metre, and a mile a bit more than 1.5 kilometres). But before we get too confident about these older units of length, let’s consider some of the less common ones which can also get us to a mile. Units such as:- 3 inches = 1 palm ; 3 palms = 1 span ; 2 spans = 1 cubit ; 11 cubits = 1 rod, pole or perch ; 4 rods = 1 chain ; 10 chains = 1 furlong and 8 furlongs = 1 mile. Note: the palm and the span are based on the size of someone’s hand - and there’s also a measure which is actually called a hand (still found when talking about the height of a horse) where 2 inches = 1 stick ; 2 sticks = 1 hand (= 4 inches). There are also nails, digits and fingers. It’s a real nightmare! The rod, or pole, was, originally, a long stick which was laid out on the ground in order to allocate land and it’s still used today for allotment plots. Its equivalent, the perch, originated as the Roman pertica and was roughly the length of the pike - a military weapon. In the 16th century, it was defined as “the total length of the left feet placed heel to toe of 16 average men as they left church” (not very precise and why the church?). When the business plots (called “yards”) for the first burgesses of Dunestaple were being laid out in the early 1100s, the allotted plot was 8 rods wide and 50 rods long (which worked out as a 2.5 acre plot which, at one shilling per acre rental, was half a crown a year. Not bad! How times have changed. A rod is roughly 5 metres in metric.

Doing the simple arithmetic, it follows that a palm is 3 inches ; a span is 9 inches ; a cubit is 18 inches ; a rod is 198 inches (or 16.5 feet or 5.5 yards) ; a chain is 792 inches (or 66 feet or 22 yards) ; a furlong is 660 feet or 220 yards ; and a mile is 5280 feet or 1760 yards. A long way round to get to the same place! It’s interesting to note that a cricket pitch is one chain (ie 22 yards) in length - which means that a ball bowled at 90 mph doesn’t take very long to reach the batsman! That’s why top batsmen have some of the quickest reactions in sport - certainly as quick as F1 drivers. Another old unit which, I believe, is still used in the tailoring industry is the Ell. This is 5 spans in length which makes it 45 inches. It was originally the distance from the shoulder to the wrist and could have been an approximate measure when reeling off from a roll of cloth ; it’s similar to another measure which I remember, namely that a yard is roughly the distance from the tip of your nose to the end of your fingers. It works remarkably well for adult men. Many of these early measures have origins based upon the physical sizes of kings, dukes or local members of the aristocracy, eg it’s been suggested that a foot was the length of Henry 1st’s foot (although this would give him very big feet). And from an agricultural base, a furlong comes from “furrow long” and represented the distance a plough team of 8 oxen could “furrow” without having to rest. Also 10 square chains equalled an acre which was the area of land able to be ploughed by a team of 8 oxen by 1 man in 1 day. But this - and pretty well all the other early units - must have varied tremendously from place to place and soil to soil. It was not until the 19th century that they were stabilised. The unit called the nautical mile comes from 6 feet = 1 fathom ; 100 fathoms = 1 cable ; 10 cables = 1 nautical mile. But this comes to 6000 feet whereas the accepted figure is 6080 feet so where has the extra 80 feet come from? The answer seems to be because 6000 feet is very close to 6080 feet and this is the length of a minute of latitude. So the nautical mile has been set at 6080 feet. A further nautical distance is the league which is 3 nautical miles. Many of the older units have a Roman origin and we had 2 palms = 1 shaftment ; 5 shaftments = 1 pace ; 2 paces = 1 grade or step ; 4 steps = 1 rope ; 5 ropes = 1 chain ; 50 chains = 1 Roman mile. Do the arithmetic and a Roman mile becomes 5000 feet (compare with 5280 feet). We could also get to the same point

26 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

by saying that a Roman mile was 1000 double paces (1000 grades) of the Roman foot soldier (ie 1000 X 5 ft = 5000 ft). Note that it is from the Latin mille passus (1000 steps) that we get our Mile. But these Roman distances are all slightly smaller than our British equivalents because the Romans were a bit smaller than we are so their marching pace would be less than that for a more recent British soldier. Other measures follow similarly - so Roman lengths and distances, although possibly having the same name as ours, are usually smaller. The early unit of area was the Hide which was commonly broken down into smaller fractions. When one reads the records of villages made during William the Conqueror’s Domesday survey of 1086, areas of land suitable for taxation purposes - because that was the object of the survey - were listed either directly in hides and/or in the different subdivisions. There is much controversy over the actual number of acres which make a hide but the usual number accepted is 120 (but can vary depending upon the quality of the land and, therefore, its taxable value). A hide (also known as a carucate) was an AngloSaxon unit and was considered to be the amount of land necessary to support a family. There are various sub- and super- divisions of the hide with multiples such as a ferundel being 7.5 or 10 acres dependent upon where you live. There were 2 ferundels making a bovate (or oxgang) having 15 or 20 acres. Then 2 bovates were the same as a yardland or a virgate and that 4 virgates made a hide. So a hide could be either 120 acres or 160 acres dependent upon your starting point. And with regard to the actual area of a hide, it varied from place to place around the country and was very dependent upon local factors such as soil fertility or difficulty of terrain. On the larger scale, there was (still is) the hundred which, again, has many different definitions amongst historians but is usually accepted as meaning an area of 100 hides. Hundreds were subdivisions of shires or counties (administrative units not defined by area) and larger counties had more hundreds than smaller counties (eg Bedfordshire, one of the smaller counties, has 9 hundreds). In Yorkshire, there were (still are) three ridings (the name comes from the Norse meaning a third - but they were never equal in area). At the Joe Everyman level, the basic area was the acre and we have already seen that an acre is the equivalent of 10 square chains or 66 ft by 660 ft (ie a chain by a furlong) which would have been understood by the ordinary man.

A Taste for Turmeric From helping fight inflammation to preventing heart disease and cancer, turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. It’s tasty, has been around for centuries and is a key ingredient in Britain’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala – but it’s only recently that the full benefits of turmeric have come to the fore. This gorgeously golden spice gives curry its orange tinge and has long been used in India as a medicinal herb. This is all down to compounds found within the spice, the most important of which is curcumin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It can also be used as a lively, peppery essence in things like juices, foods and stocks. Dried turmeric, meanwhile, which is much less potent, adds colour and enhanced earthiness to preparations such as roasts, rice and scrambled eggs. Supplement that! Of course, turmeric doesn’t have to be used in its raw form of food preparation; it can also be taken as a supplement.

Terminology Turmeric is a plant and it’s the roots of the plant that are used to make the spice that is used in cooking and herbal drinks. Curcumin is the naturally occurring compound within the plant’s roots that give it it’s bright yellow colour and is known as a carotenoid compound. Turmeric powder has the highest curcumin concentration. BENEFITS OF TURMERIC Eases aches and pains A powerful anti-inflammatory, there is evidence to suggest a daily dose of turmeric can greatly benefit those suffering from joint problems and arthritis.

Rids you of free radicals Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects and fights those nasty cell-damaging atoms. Found in everything from fried food to air pollution, free radicals have been linked to both ageing and cancer and the fewer of them in our bodies, the better. Prevents heart disease Several studies suggest that curcumin leads to improvements in endothelial function, which helps regulate blood pressure, blood clotting and various other factors.

That said, turmeric is not listed as an arthritis treatment by the NHS, and therefore is unlikely to be prescribed by your GP.

Beats cancer? While studies in humans are still in very early stages, lab and animal studies have shown promising effects of curcumin in the fight against cancer, by interfering with several important molecular pathways involved in cancer development, growth and spread.

Boosts moods By reducing inflammation in the brain, the curcumin element enhances the flow of neurotransmitters.

While many of these studies are in their early stages, one thing is for sure: you no longer need to feel guilty about your weekly Indian takeaway.

Changing Spaces Nine small changes that can transform any room. We’d all love to splash the cash on home renovations, but in the current climate our ability to transform a space with a big budget may find itself hampered by the perpetual rising cost of goods. The good news is there is another way though, because affecting simple changes and additions to your current living spaces, with a personal touch, can breathe life, energy and happiness into the place we call home. 1. Follow the light Lamps are the easiest way to positively alter the entire mood and vibe of a room. They’re usually pretty cheap, come in a range of styles and looks to suit your interior, and the transformation is quick! 2. Go green Plants will bring life and colour to an otherwise drab space. They also improve your air quality, making them well worth the extra care and attention they require. And breathe… 3. Hang out Art is a great way to really personalise your home, and you

don’t need to spend a fortune to achieve a unique look. Whether it’s a favourite record, childhood photo or quirky cartoon that made you smile once, it belongs on your wall. And of course, if you’re feeling really ambitious, get the canvas and paints out! 4. Shelve it As well as providing an excellent way to maximise storage in a room, shelves have the ability to become a feature in their own right if you fill them with interesting books and mementos. 5. Make a statement A really unique piece of furniture can bring to life an otherwise unremarkable space, which is why you need to hunt down that vintage cocktail globe or shabby chic chaise longue, pronto! 6. Go throw Is your sofa looking a little tired? Has your bed seen better days? Then throw a throw on it - the bold and brighter, the better. 7. Bells and whistles From vintage doorknobs

32 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

to bespoke light switches, the attention to detail we put into fixings, handles and the like can give furniture or cupboards an invigorated new image. 8. Rug doctor A decent rug can really tie a room together, with the chance to complement colour, texture and the type of look you’re going for. And as an added bonus, of course, it can also hide that wine stain from last Christmas! 9. Reflect Mirrors aren’t just for gazing at yourself adoringly, they can also bring light and space to an otherwise gloomy room, if positioned towards windows and given the occasional wipe!

Hooray for Hedgehogs With their bristly bodies and snuffling snouts, hedgehogs are one of the nation’s favourite garden visitors. Yet despite pleas for urban and rural gardeners to take better care of these cute animals, hedgehog numbers continue to decline at an alarming rate. For anyone who’s ever chanced upon these little wonders, the plight of the hedgehog - in the last decade numbers have fallen by 30% - will feel like a real shame. After all, they are charming, nervous and largely harmless animals.

Put away the pellets There is no need for slug pellets when you have a thriving hedgehog population, as these hungry little hogs can hoover up over 100 snails, slugs and worms every night!

However, there are some things you can do to help our hog friends survive their current plight.

Create hedgehog highways If you live in a terraced plot and have gardens that are side by side in a row behind the houses – and providing your neighbours agree! – make little tunnels through the garden fences so that hedgehogs can have a corridor between gardens.

Hog heaven Create a nesting place for any expected hedgehogs by curating log and leaf piles, plus wilderness areas. In addition, buy a purpose-built hedgehog home to provide a safe haven. Fallen leaves also offer perfect nesting material, so make sure to leave some when you next clear your garden.

This transforms your garden from an isolated nature reserve into a spiny mammal thoroughfare, which is fun for all concerned. Looking after hedgehog health If you find an underweight or sickly-looking hedgehog, or alternatively a hedgehog active in winter, put out tinned cat or dog

36 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

food and fresh water. While hedgehogs are excellent at finding their own food, a helping hand in a time of need goes a long way. Of course, if you see a really poorly hedgehog who appears to be in need of medical treatment, your first step should be to contact your local rescue centre for advice. Protection A vital feature for hedgehogs in your garden is long grass, where they might hide away and feel safe from the gaze of predators. This grass and surrounding plants will encourage a mass of snails and slugs which, as above, are a hedgehog delicacy! Pick me up! Finally, while we may consider hedgehogs to be some of the most visually scary animals out there given they are covered in a blanket of prickly spikes, they are actually very friendly and will respond well to being held.

Greenfingers…

The Alan Titchmarsh Column You also need to start thinking about early spring vegetables – they’ll be longer in the ground but still working their magic through the winter months.

He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh discusses putting early preparations in place for the cold season. So winter is coming! Okay, so it’s a way off yet, but getting our plans together early for what we want to see in our gardens in winter, is actually a really good idea, even if the whole discussion feels a little, well, ‘out of season’, you might say! The notion of the winter vegetable is one we all stand by – rough, rustic, wholesome and happy, they are the meal mainstays of a season in which we want to be inside, wrapped up

The (New) Seven Wonders of the World With only the Great Pyramid at Giza surviving as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, here are a new breed of mighty manmade monuments. 1. CHICHÉN ITZA, MEXICO This well-known Mayan city served as a religious, political and economic centre for several hundred years. The Pyramid of Kulkulkán is the most recognised ruin, incorporating 365 huge stone steps. 2. CHRIST THE REDEEMER, BRAZIL This statue of Jesus is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most widely recognised monuments. It weighs 700 tonnes and stands 100ft tall atop the summit of Mount Corcovado. 3. THE COLOSSEUM, ITALY Gladiator contests, group combat and battle re-enactments were staged at the Colosseum. Today, wear and tear from natural

disaster and vandalism show, but they can’t take away from this iconic Italian sight. 4. THE TAJ MAHAL, INDIA This 42acre marble mausoleum complex located in Agra is a stunning Indian landmark. Construction started in 1631, spanning more than two decades, and used the skills of more than 20,000 labourers. 5. GREAT WALL OF CHINA, CHINA The Great Wall of China isn’t one continuous structure - it’s actually made up of several

separate structures that cover approximately 4,500 miles. Pack your walking boots! 6. PETRA, JORDAN The ancient city of Petra boasts massive temples, tombs and monuments, all cut into the surrounding sandstone cliffs and immortalised in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. 7. MACHU PICCHU, PERU Built in the 15th century, the socalled ‘lost city’ of the Incas was hidden amidst the lush forest and clouds of Peru for more than three centuries.

Eco bathroom energy Simple changes we can make if we’re keen on making our daily preparation and preening routines that much more ecologically friendly. 1. Plastic is not fantastic We all know the issue with single-use plastics, and the damage they do to the environment. The prevalence of refillable and reusable body products – soaps, gels, moisturisers etc. – and the number of retailers wising up to this trend, has kicked off a cultural shift that is rapidly gathering pace. Not only is this tendency for refillable products a trendy revolution, even if it is akin to wartime replenishment of products, but typically those products on offer have been developed with sensitive skin or vegan elements in mind, meaning they are better not just for the environment, but ourselves too. 2. Water Wastage Showers, toilets, baths and bathroom sinks are collectively responsible for more than two-thirds of a household’s average water usage, meaning that any reduction we can make in water usage will have a hugely positive impact on the environment. There are simple measures we can all take such as showering

rather than bathing, and beyond that changing an old showerhead for a low-flow version with high pressure. Also ensure leaky taps are fixed and are certainly not left running for any amount of time unnecessarily – a tap left on can let through six litres of water in under a minute. That means small things such as turning the tap off when brushing your teeth or washing your face can offer a huge benefit in terms of saving water. And of course, whilst helping the environment you’re also reducing your water bill. 3. Letting life flourish While the bathroom perhaps isn’t the most obvious place to begin inviting in the flora and fauna of the outside world, the humidity, moisture and flow of air actually makes it a great place for low-maintenance plants such as ferns to thrive. Meanwhile, adding in airpurifying plants such as spider plants, peace lilies, aloe vera and snake plants will actively improve the purity of the air in

your bathroom. A biproduct of this is a decrease in mould, meaning less need for harmful cleaning products and chemicals. 4. Limescale lag Limescale is something we commonly associate with poor performance in kettles and washing machines, and that’s correct. Yet, by extension, when our appliances require more energy, over a longer period, to perform the same function, both we and the environment are paying for the privilege. From taps to showerheads to the big one, build-up inside your boiler, banishing limescale means keeping your heating appliances and waterflow systems running as efficiently as possible.

Looking Up! Bedfordshire’s Night Sky August & September 2022 See Jupiter & Saturn at their brightest for 2022: Two solar system giants are about to reach their closest point to Earth for the year, and so appear at their most luminous in the night sky for stargazers. Saturn is at its nearest to Earth on Sunday 14 August, and Jupiter is closest on Monday 26 September.

Both planets are easy to pick out with the naked eye on their headline dates, but also in the weeks prior to their close approaches and in the four months following. For Jupiter in August and September look for the brightest ‘star’ in the sky towards the south-east or south around midnight. Saturn is located slightly lower in the sky to the right of Jupiter almost an extended forearm’s length across the heavens.

• Warm and cosy restaurant and bar with character fireplaces • Ample parking

Watch Mars dance among the stars: For early risers Mars is an easy catch in the morning sky ahead of dawn. Look for a bright star-like object with a distinctive red hue towards the east and south-east. From mid-August through September the Red Planet cuts a path between two star clusters - the Pleiades and Hyades. On 20 August and 17 September a half moon joins the scene.

Finance

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at how, in a time of rising costs, we can make savings in other places. There’s so much attention at the moment on the cost of petrol, the cost of our utilities, the rise in inflation, and it all seems like bad news. Yet sometimes we are all guilty of obsessing over the negative elements whilst failing to recognise good opportunities elsewhere; and if you’re looking for one sector where costs, pretty much consistently over time, have always decreased, then reach into your pocket and take out your trusty mobile phone. Telecommunications, broadband and connected industries continue to slash prices in what is a consumerled price war, and the simple truth is many of us are still paying too much for our mobile

phone contracts. So if you’re coughing more than about a tenner a month for your mobile phone contract – and by that I mean calls, texts and data, not the device itself – you’re probably in line to save some money. It all comes down to looking for the best-priced SIM for your needs, because once you find the right deal, it’s really very easy nowadays to grab your PAC code and switch networks. Now usually when I suggest switching to a different mobile provider, people come back with concern over signal strength for, say, Lebara Mobile or PlusNet or whoever it is offering the best deal on data. The reality though is that the

communications network is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal. So by selecting one of the smaller companies all you’re doing is going with a virtual network, and everything else should remain the same. Obviously check before you sign up to see if 5G or tethering conditions are available, but beyond those things it’s the same line. It’s strange that mobile phones are such an integral part of our lives, yet many of us take for granted the competitiveness of the industry and don’t realise where we can be making savings. In an era of prices rising inexplicably across the board in other elements of our life, the time is now to start working the equation back in our favour, so have a look at your bill, survey the competition and start the conversation!

Employment Law Q&A with Philip Bain, Solicitor, Employment, Machins Solicitors QUESTION 1 - I have less than two years’ employment. Can my employer dismiss me without a reason? ANSWER - Employees can only usually claim unfair dismissal against an employer if they have a minimum of two years’ service. However, there are exceptions to this rule. If an employee is able to establish an automatically unfair or discriminatory reason for their dismissal, in most cases there is no qualifying service period. QUESTION 2 - I have a disability and have received a written warning as a result of having disability related sickness. Is this fair and reasonable?

ANSWER - The Equality Act 2010 protects disabled employees against discrimination, harassment and victimisation at work. Employers have a duty to protect their workforce from discrimination and take steps to prevent disability discrimination at work. QUESTION 3 - How do I find more information about my rights? ANSWER - Machins Solicitors offers free 30 minute consultations to discuss any individual queries you may have. If you wish to book in for a free 30 minute consultation, please contact one of our friendly and experienced team by telephone on 01582 514000. Philip Bain is a solicitor in the Employment Team at Machins Solicitors. Being local to Dunstable, he takes part in various networking events within the local community. Philip also attends the Dunstable Citizen’s Advice Bureau on a monthly basis where he offers the local community free 30 minute consultations in respect of any employment issues they may have. You can get in touch with Philip on philip.bain@machins.co.uk

Fuelling the divide Is premium fuel really worth the extra investment? For many of us, whether petrol or diesel, filling up is enough of a financial chore, without voluntarily spending more on jazzed up fuel, whether it’s called ‘Super,’ ‘V-Power,’ ‘Nitro+,’ ‘Ultimate’ or something else. For others, even in this climate, premium denotes performance and longevity; but does the added investment pay back? Premium vehicle? Premium fuel If you own a high-spec vehicle then filling up from the premium pump could be a sound move. The reason for this is that premium fuel’s higher-octane rating means it works better with engines of a higher compression. Subsequently, that leads to increased performance and more efficient maintenance of your system. The downside is, of course, cost –

on average, performance fuel will cost you around 10p per litre more. Size matters In reality though, all this largely only applies to premium vehicles where higher octane motors mean higher octane fuel. For what you might describe as ‘everyday cars’ – your runaround that takes you to the shops and back or drops the kids to school – the better bet is to opt for the cheaper option when you venture to the pump.

50 www.thevinedirectory.co.uk

Your little set of wheels will have a standard octane rating of 95, meaning that the electronics are configured so that the vehicle will run in a satisfactory way on the regular fuel. Put another way, there’s a good chance upgrading your fuel will make little noticeable difference… except to your wallet, and we’ve all encountered enough damage to that this year!

Urban Sketching

Have a go at these very quick urban sketches. If you’re nervous sketch the drawing out with a pencil first and then use a black pen to draw over the top of the pencil marks. I would recommend just ‘going for it’ directly with your pen. Hold your black pen loosely in your hands. Almost create a continuous line drawing so your pen just kisses the page. Do the drawing very quickly (approx. 5mins). The quicker you work the better. Then using willow charcoal rub it across your drawing and blend it in with a tissue. Leave an uneven background to create an unfinished look. Then use a rubber to create the highlights. Now you can add more charcoal to make some areas darker. Go out and have a go doing a corner of a building or a shop or street lights etc. Draw fast! New term starts Wednesday 21st September 2022 Why not Join us?
