Greetings from Christ Church Dunstable! Christians around the world have many reasons to celebrate, but their two main festivals are Christmas and Easter. Christmas is easy to predict because it happens on the same day each year, the 25th December. But the Western date for Easter moves around quite a bit. This year it falls on the 17th April. But the first signs of Easter happen much earlier. Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) heralds that the countdown has started but the very first sign is, of course, on Boxing Day when the first Easter Eggs appear on shop shelves.

This brings up the question:

What have eggs got to do with Easter?

Surely, it must be something significant seeing as they are so prominent? If you open your Bible to the closing chapters of each of four the gospels (biographies of Jesus) you’ll not see any eggs, and bunny rabbits don’t make an appearance whatsoever. Despite that, there is a way these eggs can point us to the amazing miracle and message of Easter. On Good Friday, Jesus allowed himself to be arrested, tried, and killed on a cross. As he hung there, Jesus wasn’t just suffering the pain of execution, but he was also bearing the weight of sin and rebellion for all those who put their trust in him. The Bible tells us in Isaiah 53:5, “… he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him.”

So, how can eggs point us to Easter? Well, the Easter story doesn’t finish on the Friday. After Jesus died, he was then taken down and placed in a tomb. He was in that tomb on Friday and Saturday. But on Sunday when a group of women went to the tomb they discovered that the tomb was empty. Instead of Jesus, they found an angel who said,

“He is not here, he is risen! … Just as he said!” (Mark 16:6-7). What do the Easter eggs and the Easter tomb have in common? They’re both empty! Oh, how I wish those eggs were solid chocolate, but they’re not! Just like the eggs are empty so is the tomb because Jesus is alive. Death has been defeated. This is the great message of Easter. The empty tomb also means we can trust all the things Jesus said. He said that he would be raised from the dead and he was! Impossible but true. This means that when he says we can be forgiven for all our rebellion and wrongdoing we can know it to be true. Jesus is faithful to his word and what he says, he does! Even when it means leaving the tomb empty. When you work your way through the hollow shell of your eggs this Easter, remember that the tomb of Jesus was also empty because Jesus is alive and he offers life to you through faith in him. Dunstable Going Green For The Queen! The Queen’s Green Canopy is an initiative that began in May 2021 in the United Kingdom in honour of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022. The initiative aims to increase and protect the UK’s native tree cover. People from across the UK are being invited to create this ‘special gift’ for the Queen, to mark her 70 years on the throne and to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’’.

As part of this wonderful project to Green Great Britain, on 11th March, the 70th day of the 70th year of the Queen’s reign, a tree planting event took place at Mentmore Recreation Ground. The Mayor, Cllr Gloria Martin joined different community groups, including Dunstable in Bloom, school children and local residents to ‘Plant a Tree for the Queen’s Jubilee’. 20 standard trees were chosen with climate resilience in mind. The trees will be plotted for Dunstable on the Queen’s Green Canopy digital map. Funding generously provided by Central Bedfordshire Council.

NHS Charity Update Get Involved With Events at the L&D Easter-Easter Sunday is on April 17 and each year the Charity team tries to provide our Children’s Ward with Easter Eggs to enjoy, along with Easter activity packs as some of the children on our wards are unable to eat chocolate! So far we have enough Easter Eggs to cover the wards, however we are still looking for activity packs to gift the children on our wards present over the Easter period at both Bedford Hospital and L&D Hospital. Spending time in hospital is not enjoyable for anyone, especially during a time of celebration, therefore donations will make a huge difference to our patients stay. Emergency Department (ED) Appeal In December 2020, Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust received wonderful news of a statutory grant of £17m, which would allow both Bedford Hospital and Luton & Dunstable Hospital to make much needed improvements and renovations to their respective Emergency Departments. Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity are supporting our clinical teams by fundraising for equipment and services to help provide gold standard care for our patients. The items and services we have identified will support our staff to provide the best possible treatment for our patients in a comfortable and calming environment. Each year, a proportion of our patients who require inpatient care (approximately 150 per year) are very unwell and require intensive stabilisation. Currently, acutely unwell or unstable patients have to be resuscitated in open bays or cramped cubicles, which lacks privacy for the patients and their family and is distressing for other families and patients to see. It is also creates a difficult working environment for our staff.

Exciting Events This Year At The Luton Hoo Estate Walled Garden 2022 is the 21st anniversary of the start of the volunteer project to rejuvenate the Walled Garden which was designed by Capability Brown. Hello again! I am Mabel the resident dog at Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels in Eaton Bray.

This stunning boy is Breeze, a merle Border collie aged nine. Breeze is a rather complex lad and can be wary of new people and situations, but those he gets to know and trust can expect lots of affection. Being a collie he needs plenty of exercise and activities. He would probably live with a female dog pending introductions but not cats or children under 16. Breeze does need time and patience to help him become more confident, but the rewards will be there for the right owners. For more information about Breeze please see his album on our Facebook page. that these were small scale enterprises. Schooling, for example, was very elementary. The first school at Dunstable was opened in 1906 close to Lac La Nonne and later, a second, one roomed school, was built 3 miles further east in 1914. Progress continued slowly and by 1913, a railway had been built in the Busby/Barrhead districts to the east of Dunstable. This meant that, for the first time, roads (rather than tracks) were created in the region thereby allowing greater mobility. But it also meant that prosperity and development would eventually move in that direction. Although these small, isolated, essentially farming communities continued independently throughout the first half of the 20th century, in 1948 it was decided to combine the four small schools at Belvedere, Sion, Five Lakes and Clifton with that at Dunstable to create a new school built nearer the crossroads and called the Dunstable Consolidated School. It then became the community centre for a wide area. The enlarged school enjoyed a peak of 126 pupils in 1949 and offered a full curriculum from grades 1 to 12. But since then there has been a gradual, but continuing drop off in pupil numbers and the school can now only offer tuition from Kindergarten to Grade 6. The much greater development around Barrhead due to the discovery of oil and natural gas has also attracted people to that area which, coupled with the necessity for farms in the Dunstable area to become much larger and for smaller farms to disappear - together with commuter opportunities in Edmonton- have all led to the subsequent decline of population and businesses around Dunstable. Prosperity has moved elsewhere. The early settlers into the area came not only from different parts of Canada but also from different parts of the world - perhaps from Dunstable, England ?! They had to build their own log cabin ; they had to get their water from nearby streams ; they had to cultivate their own vegetable patch ; they had to gather wild fruits and berries and to forage for other forest staples such as mushrooms. It was clearly a hand to mouth living where mottos such as “waste not, want not” and “make do and mend” had real meaning. At a personal level, I can also remember less affluent times when I was very much younger and, for similar reasons, nothing went to waste then. who remember the early days and how different it was before the advent of roads and motorcars, electricity, heated homes, running water and all the other benefits of modern living which we now take for granted. One particular historical note which she describes deals with the time when gold was discovered in the Yukon in 1896; and how this triggered a stampede of prospectors rushing to get to the Klondike gold fields. The Canadian Government wanted to encourage an “All Canada Backdoor Route to the Klondike” in competition with the usual route from Skagway, Alaska, and the Chilcoot Trail. It was to start from Edmonton and follow the early fur trapping trail - thereby passing close to Dunstable - before entering a true wilderness further north. A route to the Klondike was pioneered but proved much too difficult for all but the hardiest of men and also took too long to get there. An alternative, much quicker route, was developed passing close to Barrhead which further added to its prosperity. However, it is recorded that many of these would-be “first trail” prospectors gave up soon after entering more difficult country and retraced their steps to settle in the Dunstable area thereby swelling the numbers somewhat and becoming the forerunners of some of the present community in the area. Something which intrigues me is where did the name Dunstable come from? It has no local meaning or significance. There are a few suggestions such that it is, indeed, named after Dunstable in England. But who would know about our town - unless having originally come from here? Or that four founding settlers each put a suggestion into a hat and Dunstable was drawn out. But how would our name be known in such a remote area in the first place? Or that the name was suggested by post office workers at nearby Barrhead. This might have some credibility since Barrhead was named by an immgrant Scot after his home town and perhaps, just perhaps, he or his post office workers would know about us. They might have recognised the similarity between Dunstable, England and Dunstable, Alberta in that they both lie on crossroads made by a major and a minor road. As a final thought, Dunstable, Massachusetts is a prosperous town in New England and Dunstable, Alberta is a small community which has seen better times. I’ve discovered yet another Dunstable - this time in Queensland, Australia whose population seems to be one bloke and his dog - it’s really tiny but in a huge area (typical of Australia!)

Money on my mind...the Martin Lewis column He’s the UK’s leading money saving expert - a journalist and presenter who has kept millions of pounds in people’s pockets as well as lifting the lid on the threats and dangers we need to be aware of as consumers. In this month’s column, Martin Lewis looks at budgeting. Here’s an uncomfortable fact for you - many people are appalling ‘budgeters’. We all know what we earn, but we don’t know what we spend, and you cannot balance the seesawing budget without being clear on both.

Each month when you get paid, you siphon the right amount of money into the Bills account, you put the right amount of money into the Holidays account, the right amount of money into the Christmas account, and so on.

The biggest problem that people have is they look across the month at what they typically pay for things. So, they’ll look at their food bills, their utilities, their mortgage, car lease and all those things, and that’s all good and well. But you know what, the average family in the UK spends £600 on Christmas, which is £50 a month. They buy a new sofa every three or four years for maybe £1,000. They buy a television that is £300. They go on holiday, and so on.

Ultimately, the way I suggest people manage their money is by using a system I call ‘Piggybanking’. It involves moving things into hypothetical ‘accounts’. So, let’s say you have your ‘Standard Bills’ account, which is all the regular bills you need to pay each month; you have your ‘Holidays’ account - you know you spend £1,000 a year on a holiday and that’s about £85 a month. You have your ‘Christmas’ account and you have your ‘Big One-offs’ account. Those are examples, but use whatever is personal to you.

So your Holidays account will categorically conﬁrm to you that you have, say, £512 to spend. If you’re spending more, you cannot afford it, so you have to cut your cloth accordingly.

Greenfingers… the Alan Titchmarsh column He’s a brilliant presenter, accomplished gardener, talented novelist and all-round horticultural inspiration. This month, Alan Titchmarsh talks about the impact his iconic Ground Force series had on the nation. I get asked a lot about Ground Force, the TV programme I fronted for ﬁve years from 1997, and the impact it made on gardening, as a whole. To be honest, I don’t like to talk up my achievements too much, but I will admit this was one of the real successes I will always look back on with fondness. That’s not so much for any personal reasons, and I certainly don’t think my horticultural knowledge was called on in the same way it has been with other gardening shows I’ve done over the years. Instead, the pride I have for Ground Force stems from a place where we managed to start something of an outdoors revolution.

Not only were we at the forefront of a new brand of reality TV (that wasn’t a talent show or a singing contest). It was in people’s homes, in their lives, and focused on the idea that people could come together from all over to make a difference. All the people involved in Ground Force came from different backgrounds and offered very different ideas in the process of transforming a chosen family’s back garden, but it worked. My role was probably one of the easiest – almost just an anchor man pulling the whole thing together, however clumsily! The show’s success provoked a whole raft of other home reality programmes where people’s dreams came true… usually. And I say that on the basis of some of the awkward transformations Changing Rooms embarked on! Yet for the most part, this brand of telly was incredibly successful – think DIY SOS, Property Ladder, Amazing Spaces, Grand Designs, Location Location Location and others. At the heart of it is exploring human nature and putting

ordinary people in extraordinary situations, and seeing how they react. Everyone who agrees to take part is looking for something, and the lucky ones are the ones who ﬁnd it and know when they have found it. After all, our gardens will never be absolutely perfect places – nature sees to that – but Ground Force certainly got them close to that for a time. As the TV crews departed, I would always suggest to the homeowners they should just sit in or look out over their garden without feeling conditioned to keep it in a certain way. Life isn’t like that – it evolves, as do our outside spaces, and we should let it. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”… or tidying the garden!

Boost your memory Four exercises that will boost memory and protect wellbeing. Your brain may not in fact be a muscle, but it does work in much the same way as those in your body – the harder you work it, the stronger it gets and the better it performs. Here are four exercises that you can carry out over a four-week period – try them and see if you start noticing the results. Exercise 1: Sleep treat Just as you’re ready to go to sleep, think over what you did that day from the time you got up until you got into bed. Follow your entire day step-by-step, visualising each and every step. Don’t worry if in the beginning you can’t remember much detail – you’ll probably move rapidly from task to task or think of the day in larger, broader sections. It’s important to really try to slow down and remember as much as you can, and with time and practice, you will soon start to notice signiﬁcant improvement in your recall of events and details.

Exercise 2: Map attack On a piece of paper draw a small square for where you live, and begin to add in roads around you. Gradually build a map of your square mile until you reach the edge of the paper. This is a great exercise as it promotes an ability to picture an environment, factoring in scale and perspective, and boosting rapid recall of memories attached to places. Compare side-by-side to a real map and see what you included and missed. Exercise 3: Non-dominant hand Testing the efﬁciency of tasks with your ‘wrong’ hand is a great way to get brain activity increasing as it aims to focus harder and ﬁnd solutions to what are, in fact, regular jobs. Moving your brain out of its comfort zone in this way is a great way to stimulate it, all the while encouraging it to

This Easter holidays, those searching for an egg-stra special family day out should look no further than ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s Easter Egg Trail. From Saturday 2nd April to Sunday 24th April, children and their grownups can take part in an Easter egg hunt with a difference at the UK’s largest Zoo, where five giant eggs, each with a connection to one of the Zoo’s incredible animals, have been hidden by the Easter Bunny. Families can solve clues as they eggs-plore, and once they’ve cracked the code, will discover where the Easter Bunny is hiding with her sticker prizes! Would you like an opportunity to share your memories of life in Dunstable? Join Dunstable cultural consortium's memory workshops to celebrate and create using your memories of the town. The first workshop will be to make a collage from your memorabilia. You can use photo's of the town, buildings, people, of take a photo of an object that is special to you. You might have a ticket from an event, a payslip from your workplace, of photo' of a particular group of people.
