More than 60 years later,

Optimism Endures

Six decades after The Sound of Music debuted on Broadway in 1959, it is still a cultural touchstone. Part of the reason? Even in today’s vastly different world, it still symbolizes freedom from oppression. For Maria, it is freedom from the abbey; for the children, it is freedom from the strict, formal, and even cold life with their father. And at the end, the whole family is able to escape the oppression of the Nazis for a better life in the United States. Raymond Knapp, a professor at UCLA, wondered if today’s audiences experiencing The Sound of Music will reflect upon America’s immigration policies. “These people were refugees, and today it would be harder for them to come to the United States,” he said of the von Trapps. “In the 1950s and 1960s, America thought of itself as a welcoming place.”

What do you think? We know that at least one American president was a fan of The Sound of Music. In his biography of Ronald Reagan, Richard Reeves reported that the president once passed on reading a briefing book before a Group of Seven summit meeting, telling Chief of Staff Jim Baker, “Well, Jim, The Sound of Music was on last night.” The story has shown real staying power over the years, in part because the song lyrics underscore the importance of music to our culture and to ourselves. Captain von Trapp rekindled his affection for his children when he played the guitar and sang with them. Music also evoked his love for Maria. And that is perhaps an important reason it endures. “People want to experience it,” Professor Knapp said. “For a few hours, they want to be that family.”

A SHOW

with LEGS* Most of the reviews of the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music were favorable. The New York Post theater critic stated that the show had “gentle charm that is wonderfully endearing.” The New York World-Telegram and Sun pronounced The Sound of Music “the loveliest musical imaginable. It places Rodgers and Hammerstein back in top form as melodist and lyricist. The dialogue is vibrant and amusing in a plot that rises to genuine excitement.” The New York Journal American’s reviewer wrote that The Sound of Music was “the most mature product of the team … it seemed to me to be the full ripening of these two extraordinary talents.” Brooks Atkinson of The New York Times pronounced that The Sound of Music was Rodgers and Hammerstein in good form. (As expected, there were also a few less-than-thrilled critics who thought the show a bit sugary.) The original The Sound of Music garnered a host of Tony Awards: BEST Musical BEST Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical BEST Featured Actress in a Musical BEST Conductor and Musical Director BEST Scenic Design of a Musical Time has proved that The Sound of Music has something to say to three generations…and counting! It’s been revived; adapted to a hugely popular film; performed on professional, amateur, college, and high school stages across the country; traveled the world; and young and old seem never to tire of its story or music. One needs little more proof than this: a good case can be made that people know the lyrics to more of the songs in The Sound of Music than any other show in history!!! * If a show has legs, you can count on the fact that it will continue for a long time; you’ll probably still be able to see it or hear about it for a long time. It will continue to exist and be successful. A perfect description of The Sound of Music! 7

the REAL von Ge

The Trapp Family (also known as the von Trapp Family) was the Austrian singing family of former naval commander Georg von Trapp. The family achieved fame in their original singing career in their native Austria between the two World Wars. In the United States, they became well known as the “Trapp Family Singers” until they stopped performing as a group in 1957. The family’s story was the basis for a memoir, two German films, the Broadway musical, and a film. The last surviving of the original seven Trapp children, Maria, g vo n died in 2014 at the age of 99. T ra p p or

Georg von Trapp had seven children at the time of his first wife’s death and in 1927, he married Maria Kutschera, 25 years his junior. Together, they had three more children. Everyone in the family was musical, and by 1935 the family was singing at their local church where they met a young priest who encouraged their music and taught them sacred music to add to their repertoire of folk songs, madrigals, and ballads. In Salzburg, their home, they were persuaded to take part in the song competition at the 1936 Salzburg Festival, where they won a prize. After this, the family performed in Vienna, Salzburg, and went on a European tour of France, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Germany and England.

That same year, the Trapps performed in the United States before returning to Austria when their visas expired. However, in the same year, Adolf Hitler annexed Austria, and the family decided to leave for Italy. Georg was born in Zadar; then a part of Italy, now Croatia. Thus, he and the family Trapp were legally Italian citizens. von IA They spent time in the Netherlands, then the United States, where they applied for immigrant status in 1939. They arrived with little money, having lost most of the family fortune during a bank collapse in Austria. Once in the US, they earned money by performing and

touring. After living briefly in Pennsylvania, the family settled in Stowe, Vermont, in 1941 where they bought a 660-acre farm and converted it into the Trapp Family Lodge. Following World War II, they founded the Trapp Family Austrian Relief fund, sending food and clothing to impoverished people in Austria. Now living permanently in the United States, the family performed their unique mixture of liturgical music, madrigals, folk and instrumental music to audiences in more than 30 countries for the next 20 years. They made a series of records for RCA Victor in the 1950s. (Later, a few recordings were released on LPs, including some in stereo.) The Trapp family singing group disbanded in 1957. Maria wrote The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, published in 1949, which inspired the 1956 West German film The Trapp Family, which in turn inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music.
