eing asked to be a part of The Jewish Federation of Ocean County is an honor. Doing the work is a blessing. Otherwise, who would we be? Where would we be? Hillel said it best: “If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” Basically, we cannot be effective community leaders if we are not caring for each other, both individually and collectively. In October 2015, Ellyn Lyons became our President. Ellyn took over the leadership at a diffi cult time. For several months, she was the President without an Executive Director. It was a challenging time. Thankfully, Ellyn had a very good foundation to work with following the leadership of the immediate past co-presidents, Lauren, Randi and Barbara. As a seasoned volunteer leader, Ellyn began to work with pas-

sion, to organize teams, and appoint individuals who made the wheels turn towards positive outcomes. Highlights of the Annual meeting will include the election of new offi cers and Board of Trustees who will be re-elected for a one-year term and presentation of Volunteer Awards. It is these stalwart volunteers, among others, who provide the energy that turn the wheels. We will have an opportunity to hear former CNN Middle East Correspondent Linda Scherzer. Without the planning and dedication of the Offi cers of the Board, providing their professionalism and windows into the future, we would be at a loss. Our outgoing Board has made sure that the new Board has already made progress by installing the new leadership, and their particular commitments to keep our Federation energized and successful. ragically, in August and September, two natural disasters hit the U.S. impacting large parts of Texas and Florida and other areas. This enormous storm caused widespread damage and fl ooding, and left more than 10 million people without power, water and food. Though the storms could have been even worse, they were very destructive. Residents and communities are just now beginning to return to assess the damage. We are still in the process of gathering information about specifi c needs. The State of Israel has donated one million dollars to the Houston Jewish Community. It is anticipated that a do-
