Jewish Agency Brings 17 Yemenite Jews to Safety in Israel in Covert Operation JAFI JAFI is one of three overseas agencies supported by Your Federation gift.

I

n response to heightened security concerns in Yemen, The Jewish Agency recently brought 17 Yemenite Jews to Israel.

The group consisted of two sets of parents, who were brought directly to Israel from Yemen, and 10 of their children, who were brought to Argentina 2 years ago through the efforts of the Satmar community.

These new immigrants landed in Ben Gurion Airport in Israel on Wednesday night, August 14, 2013, and were brought to their new homes at a Jewish Agency absorption center in the South where they will begin the next chapter of their lives as free and protected Jews living of the State of Israel.

According to data collected by The Jewish Agency, a record number of 151 Yemeni Jews have come to Israel since 2009, reflecting the uptick in the number of anti-Semitic incidents there.

Omnibus is Back

Thoughts Approaching Yizkor takes us back in time to memories of loved ones no longer with us. We read, we sing, we remember, and sometimes we cry, and that’s OK.

F

or over thirty years, Women’s Division of Ocean County ran a fantastic annual program called Omnibus. Now thanks to the efforts of co-chairs Ellyn Lyons and Lauren Gordon along with their committee, Omnibus is back with new and exciting offerings. The kickoff for Omnibus 21st Century will be on Sunday, October 20, 2013 and will be held at Temple Beth Or in Brick.

The program won the Council of Jewish Federation’s prestigious “Schroder” award for Community Programming Excellence. It has been an outstanding source of exciting speakers and workshops for over a generation.

The revitalized committee wisely decided to maintain the format of workshops and keynote speaker, though as an aside personally, I’ve never understood how a keynote speaker can be the last thing on a program. The keynote address on “The Culture of Violence” is being presented by two members of clergy who have firsthand experience dealing and combating violence.

Rabbi Shaul Praver was there for his community, as spiritual leader of Congregation Adath Israel, when disaster struck in Newtown, Connecticut. Pastor Corey Brooks, when not leading his church, spends his time combating violence in the inner city of Chicago. To be able to hear these two nationally recognized leaders, here in our own community, discuss their efforts to combat violence is going to be heartfelt and unforgettable.

In keeping with the new 21st Century theme, the morning sessions will feature two stimulating and interactive workshops. Rabbi Arnold Samlan will use popular music to understand the role of music in shaping and reflecting on American society, while Rabbi Steven Bayar astutely uses clips from popular films to lead discussion on the Jewish Perspectives on War and Peacemaking.

The mixture of music and film, plus the religious perspective on violence, makes this morning an event you will not want to miss. Seating is limited and filling quickly, so Continued on page 15

W

hen I was growing up, we children were sent out of the sanctuary at the start of the Yizkor or memorial service late on Yom Kippur afternoon. Nobody ever told us why. We would stand around outside the synagogue building, kicking stones, fooling around, and otherwise killing time until somebody’s mother or father remembered to come out and get us for the start of Neilah. Before we were summoned, however, we would witness a parade of weeping adults leaving the building; in retrospect, I suppose that, overcome with emotion, they were leaving before Yizkor actually ended. I can tell you that for us children, the sight was pretty scary. Since we had no idea why they were crying, we could only imagine what was going on in there, and sometimes our imaginations went a little crazy.

Perhaps some of you had similar experiences. Fortunately, we eventually came to understand this service which for many people is one of the most significant and profoundly meaningful parts of the High Holy Days. Both painful and sweet, Yizkor

This year’s Yizkor services are just weeks away now, and so I thought I would share with you some thoughts drawn from a recent on-line “conversation” held by a number of my rabbinic colleagues. On a list serve we all belong to, one of our colleagues posted this question: “In your rabbinical experience, what have you learned from visiting with those terminally ill or near death? In particular, what sort of regrets have you heard expressed by these individuals?” What followed was a fascinating and enlightening cascade of responses from rabbis representing all ages, years of service, areas of the country and types of congregations. As one rabbi noted, “People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality.” So as a way of honoring all of those brave souls who fearlessly talked about their lives – and especially their regrets – I want to share with you the five most common themes that my colleagues (and I) report hearing over the years.

First, let me ask you to just imagine: what do you think those regrets were? Think of how your own loved ones would have responded had someone asked them about their regrets. Everyone has them; I don’t think it’s possible to get through life without at least a few. Practicing these habits, even just a week before school begins, can make the transition smoother and less of a shock for your child.

Your child may have a more leisurely schedule: waking up late, eating meals at random times, and not having set plans throughout the day. It important to reset the daily routines so kids can get more acclimated to their academic schedules. Establishing wake up times in the morning, setting times for meals, and scheduling activities at certain times of the day are just a few easy changes to

You can speak to them about your child’s specific learning style, goals for the school year, and expectations within the classroom. true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” This seemed to be the most common regret of all. One rabbi shared a poem that he heard as part of speech given to a Jewish Federation gathering in Florida. The author is Gertrude Housman who titled it, “I Came Into the World Without Being Asked.” Here it is: I came into the world without being asked and when the time for dying comes I shall not be consulted; but between the boundaries of birth and death lies the dominion of choice: to be a doer or a dreamer; to be a lifter or a leaner; to speak out or remain silent; to extend a hand in friendship or to look the other way; to feel the sufferings of others or to be callous and insensitive.

These are the choices. It is in the choosing that my measure as a person is determined.

This is, of course, easier to proclaim than to live. Yet we can ask ourselves, what dreams or actions have we deferred because we were more concerned with doing what others expected of us? What can we do in the years left for us to be more true, more faithful to ourselves?

The second regret was, “I wish I didn’t work so hard.” Interestingly, this came from both men and women, those who had fulfilled traditional roles and those who had not. Work, after all, is work, and there are many different kinds of work in which one can lose oneself if one really wants to. Of course, there is nothing wrong with working hard, being responsible and achieving success however one chooses.

The challenge, of course, is balance. On our deathbeds, what among the things that preoccupy us now will seem unimportant?

What will we regret having done to the exclusion of something else?

By following these tips, you can help make the transition process back to school a smooth and easy one for you and your family. These tips can serve as guidelines for you. But, you know your family best, so feel free to tailor them so that they can be even more effective and helpful.

The third regret sounded something like this: “I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.” For all sorts of reasons, many among us are reticent about clearly stating our wishes, values, opinions or just the love or appreciation we feel for someone else. There are many, many reasons for this, but I suggest that one of the most common is this idea that we must keep the peace above all else out of a fear that if we don’t, some terrible catastrophe will occur.

Of course, tact, discretion, judgment and timing are critical in the maintenance of relationships – but aren’t honesty, courage, and authenticity too? What is lost when we deny who we really are, diminishing our God-given uniqueness as a human being?

Are we not entering our holiest of seasons which comes to remind us once again that errors, misunderstandings, even ruptured relationships can almost always be repaired?

The fourth of the five themes of regret was, “I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.” I imagine heads nodding among my readers. I have felt this and, I am sure, so have you. We say, “Let’s make a date, let’s keep in touch, I’ll get back to you.”

One rabbi in our discussion wrote, “Dying people I’ve spent time with often had not truly realized the full benefits of old friends until their last weeks. Many had become so caught up in other things that they had let precious, golden friendships slip by over the years.” Or, as another rabbi put it, “Later on may be too late.” There’s a lovely custom in our tradition connected to Yom Kippur that’s relevant here. The holiday of Sukkot begins less than a week after Yom Kippur. The custom is that when one returns home after spending all day in Yom Kippur services, one is take the first steps toward building one’s own sukkah. Now, that might seem strange. In 2003, while helping victims of terrorism in Israel, Sarri Singer became a victim of terrorism herself. Since, she has embarked on a journey to help those victims of terrorism in Israel and throughout the world.

arri Singer was born and raised in Lakewood New Jersey, attended Lakewood Hebrew Day, and graduated Lakewood High School. Although she is a Jersey girl, her love for Israel was always evident.

On 2002, in the aftermath of 9/11, Sarri went to Israel to work with victims of terror with the organization “One Family,” and on June 11, 2003, she became a victim of terror herself. On that day, that would change her life forever, Sarri got on Bus 14, saw two seats open in the front, and sat down next to the window. Then, an 18 year-old Palestinian terrorist dressed as a religious Jew boarded and blew himself up. 16 people were killed, including all

those seated and standing around her, and over 100 people were injured.

After the explosion, two organizations rushed to the scene to help: Magen David Adom and ZAKA. Sarri explained that Magen David Adom is Israel’s national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance service, and ZAKA is the community emergency response team. The members of ZAKA assist ambulance crews, aid in the identification of the victims of terrorism (and other accidents and disasters), and where necessary gather body parts and spilled blood for proper burial.

Sarri was then taken to Hadassah-Ein Kerem Hospital, where she said her treatment was “amazing. There are no words to thank them; how they saved my life and how they treat everybody no matter who you are.”

Sarri had shrapnel through her left shoulder which broke her clavicle, both her ears drums were blown, her hair and face were burned and bruised, and her legs were badly cut up. After realizing her life was spared, she found herself in a new level working for victims of terrorisms and advocating for methods of peace.

Her new approach goes beyond Israel, to join with others in countries that have experienced attacks, to emphasize the proper timing to address posttraumatic stress disorder, to break “fear,” which is the weapon the terrorist use to try to weaken people, and to find healing and strength in each other.

In 2012, Sarri founded an organization called “Strength to Strength,” which was established to bring survivors together globally to heal.

Years of experience, and now personal involvement, has brought Sarri insight into the concepts of terrorism. She says terrorism is a different type of violent crime, whose formal definition states as a “calculated and planned incident to hurt and murder people.”

Citing the recent Boston Marathon bombings, she noted that initially people come running to provide aid and treatment, “which is a good thing, but as the media fades and other things happen in the world, the long-term needs for victims and family members are sometimes forgotten. For the victims, the shock is still there, and it can be triggered anytime, and there are long-term psychological effects.”

One of Strength to Strength’s most successful efforts to help victims of terrorism is its “Young Ambassadors Program” (YAP), which brings together young people, ages 14-20, who lost either a parent or immediate family member in a terrorist attack or were injured themselves. This year’s program, which took place in New York City, May 30-June 6, 2013, included participants from Ireland, Spain, England, Uganda, Algeria, Argentina, Israel and the United States. The week long program is always filled with exciting and fun activi-

ties combined with meetings with political and community leaders in order to empower these young people to take their personal experiences of trauma and share them with each other in order to bring about healing.

This year’s program included such activities as FAO Schwartz, Six Flags Great Adventure, The 9/11 Tribute Center (where they were hosted by President Lee Ielpi) and 9/11 Memorial, The Intrepid Museum, Dave and Buster’s, and many other surprises for the participants, like the gift of a shopping spree to buy gifts to take back home, courtesy of Dr. Jay. At a local level, Seth Gerszberg, CEO of Ecko from Lakewood, gave the kids a tour of his company and sympathized with them, Sarri said, “sharing the loss of his father ‘Shep’ and the amazing things he taught him.” Gelbstein Bakery, of Lakewood, also gave its support to the program, “Mr. Weiss, the owner, never says no.

Even though I am far away, it is the “ole time” Lakewood people being there for each other,” she said.

My experience this summer at the Wall

his summer, I spent the first two weeks of July living in Jerusalem with my mom, dad, grandmother and my two brothers, while my mom studied at the Shalom Hartman Institute. It was an incredible experience driving to a new city each day – Haifa, Safed, Tel Aviv, Masada, the Dead Sea, each day was a new adventure. At night, I sometimes attended a lecture with my mom at the Hartman Institute.

While these night time lectures were not as exciting as my day time touring, I did learn a lot, and met all my mom’s rabbi friends.

In the evening, I heard from some famous people, like Minister of Justice Tzipi Livni, who spoke about the peace process, and Anat Hoffman and Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, who spoke about religious equality in Israel and Women of the Wall. Both discussions were very interesting, even if some of

One of the most amazing experiences that I had while in Israel this past summer, was going to the Western Wall, the Kotel, on Rosh Chodesh Av. I went with my mom and grandmother and we prayed with Women of the Wall. Women of the Wall want the right to pray, out loud, at the Kotel, at the beginning of each new Hebrew month, with tallit and tefillin.

We walked from our apartment in Jerusalem, at the crack of dawn, to meet buses at the Liberty Bell Park, which took us, and at least 300 other people, to the Kotel.

When I went to Women of the Wall I was excited, but a little scared. What if I got separated from my mom in the crowd? What if people got upset with my mom when she put on her tallit and tefillin? No one got upset directly

with my mom, and when she did put on her tallit and tefillin, she was so excited, she turned to me and said, “I am living my dream.” She had always spoken about wanting to go to the Kotel and daven (pray) there. I was so happy to experience this with her, which my brothers could not, because they were too little, and it was so early, they were still sleeping when we left for the bus.

When we got to the Kotel, I saw a bunch of Orthodox people there to protest. I could not really tell how many, but there were so many they blocked our way into the women’s section. There were 5,000 to 7,000 yeshiva girls in the women’s section, blocking the Wall from Women of the Wall getting to the women’s section of the Wall. We had to remain in the courtyard area of the Kotel, and could not even get into the women’s section. Instead of the women and the supportive men Continued on next page

When we started to pray, the Orthodox men started screaming and there were people blowing whistles. My mom and I thought men were blowing those whistles, but we learned a few days later that it was women blowing the whistles. The constant sound of the whistle blowing was very distracting. My mom and I were standing in the back of the crowd so we could not really hear the prayers, but we followed along in the special Women of the Wall Siddurim that they distributed, and we sang along. Where Women of the Wall congregated, the Rabbi Emeritus of our synagogue, Congregation B’nai Israel, Rabbi Richard Hammerman, his wife Sharon, and his daughter Leah, who was my pre-school teacher, were there. My mom wanted to take pictures with them, so we went in the shade and took pictures. My mom’s back was to the

Charedim (ultra Orthodox) girls and they started taking pictures of my mom, not to be mean, but because they were curious to see a woman in tallit and tefillin. I called them paparazzis.

The day we went to Women of the Wall there was a bat mitzvah, but the girl could not read from the Torah. She had to read from a siddur. It is a rule that the Women of the Wall cannot bring their own Torah or use the Western Wall’s Torah. It was cool though, that a rabbi near where we stood, secretly brought a Torah with him in a bag, but we still could not use it. Logically, one should at least be able to wait until the next morning when one can get up refreshed and take tools and materials in hand to get started on the building project.

However, our tradition teaches differently, and I think that the lesson being taught is applicable beyond sukkah-building specifically; that lesson being, Do it tonight, even though you are totally exhausted. Tonight is all we can absolutely count on and be sure of. Or as the Jewish law code, the Shulchan Aruch, instructs: “One should run to perform a mitzvah.”

The fifth and final of the regrets expressed by those in their final days or weeks of life was this: “I wish that I had let myself be happier.” One rabbi posted this: “Many did not realize, until the end, that happiness is a choice. They had remained stuck in old patterns and habits. Fear of change had them pretending to others and to themselves that they were content. When you are on your deathbed, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before your end. Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness. What is happiness? I suppose the definitions are limitless but I love this one

Soon, on the afternoon of Yom Kippur, we will experience Yizkor together. Some of us will be tired, some of us will be hungry. In my congregation, I invite worshipers at Yizkor to bring a memento of a loved one and place it next to our ark just before we recite the special Yizkor prayer, “Yizkor Elohim, May God remember the soul of my father/mother/ child/teacher/friend which is bound up in eternity.”

We will remember and perhaps name out loud those who are no longer with us, whom we hold in our hearts and minds and souls. Though our service will not mention this explicitly, let’s think then – and now – about their regrets, and as we remember or imagine theirs, let’s acknowledge our own now, while we still hold in our hand the most precious gift of time. Let us let our loved ones be our teachers. What better way could there be to honor them and to hold them close forever?

Jewish Federations Respond to Federal Court Decision Barring Israel from Jerusalem-Born U.S. Citizens’ Passports

uly 23, 2013 - The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia decided to bar Jerusalem-born Americans from listing Israel as their country of birth, drawing heavy criticism from many Jewish organizations. The case was

brought to the federal court of appeals by Ari and Naomi Zivotosfsky, who filed a lawsuit on behalf of their son Menachem, demanding the enforcement of a 2002 law designed to allow United States citizens born in Jerusalem to have Israel officially listed on their passport. In response, JFNA

Board of Trustees Chair Michael Siegal issued the following statement on behalf of the Jewish Federations: “The court’s decision to nullify a law enacted by Congress allowing American citizens born in Jerusalem to have Israel listed as their birthplace is a real disappointment.

We believe, as Congress does, that Americans born in Jerusalem should have the choice to declare their birthplace as the State of Israel. The United States position on the status of Jerusalem has long been at odds with the strong views of the Jewish community but we hope and believe that

this law – which leaves 50,000 Americans without an official birth country – will be reinstated by the Supreme Court and enforced by the State Department.”

The Jewish Federations, collectively among the top 10 charities on the continent, protects and enhances the well-being of Jews worldwide through the values of tikkun olam (repairing the world), tzedakah (charity and social justice) and Torah (Jewish learning).

ADL: Anti-Semitism down in the U.S., up in N.J. Incidents declined 14 percent in 2012, continuing two-year downward trend.

he total number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States fell by 14 percent in 2012, continuing a two-year trend of incremental declines, according to the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents, issued last July.

The ADL Audit reported a total of 927 anti-Semitic incidents across the U.S. in 2012 including assaults, vandalism and harassment, marking a 14 percent decline from the 1,080 incidents reported in 2011.

The 2012 total included 17 physical assaults on Jewish individuals, 470 cases of harassment, threats and events, and 440 cases of vandalism. The Audit includes both criminal and non-criminal incidents reported to ADL in 35 states and Washington, D.C. The ADL Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents has been conducted annually in the United States since 1979.

“It is encouraging that in the past few years we have seen a fairly consistent decline in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States,” said Abraham H. Foxman,

ADL National Director. “While these numbers only provide one snapshot of anti-Semitism in America, to the extent that they serve as a barometer, the decline shows that we have made progress as a society in confronting anti-Jewish hatred. Still, it is disturbing that there are so many incidents in America, and we must remain vigilant in responding to them and in encouraging law enforcement and the public to report these incidents as much as possible.”

Despite the overall decline in the number of anti-Semitic incidents in 2012, the complete picture is more complex. Even as anti-Semitic harassment, threats and events declined – to 470 incidents in 2012, from 731 in 2011 – other categories remained at a similar level or increased substantially.

“While we cannot point to any single explanation for the fluctuations from year to year, the declines of the past several years occur within the context of the continued proliferation of hatred online,” said Barry Curtiss-Lusher, ADL National Chair. “Unlike years ago, when racists handed out pamphlets on street corners or sent them through the mail, the Internet provides racists and bigots with an outlet to reach a potential audience of millions.

“This explosion of viral hate is impossible to quantify, but it may have led to a migration of sorts where the haters and bigots are more likely to take to the Internet to express themselves anonymously, rather than acting out in a public setting,” added Mr. Curtiss-Lusher. “The danger, of course, is that these online expressions can inspire and fuel real-world violence.”

According to the ADL Audit, the most dramatic increase was reported in the antiSemitic vandalism category, which experienced a 33 percent increase – with a total of 440 incidents reported in 2012, compared with 330 in 2011. While the majority of those incidents took place on public property or individual homes, Jewish institutions were targeted in 13 percent of the total vandalism incidents.

Moreover, physical assaults – often among the most disturbing anti-Semitic incidents because they involve person-on-person violence – remained at a similar level, with 17 incidents in 2012, compared with 19 incidents in 2011.

Continuing a consistent trend for many years, the states with the highest totals were those with large Jewish populations:

WORLD JEWRY • New York State, with 248 incidents in 2012, up from 195 in 2011; • California, with 185 incidents, down from 235; • New Jersey, with 173 incidents, up from 144; • Florida, with 88 incidents, down from 111; • Massachusetts, with 38 incidents, down from 72.

• Pennsylvania, with 37 incidents, down from 38.

The annual ADL Audit tracks incidents of vandalism, harassment and physical assaults against Jewish individuals, property and community institutions across the United States, using data reported to the League’s 30 regional offices and law enforcement across the country.

While the Audit does not include criticism of Israel or Zionism, such reports are included if they cross the line from legitimate criticism to anti-Semitism by invoking classic anti-Jewish stereotypes or inappropriate Nazi imagery and/or analogies. Public expressions of anti-Israel sentiments that demonize Jews or create an atmosphere of fear or intimidation for U.S. Jews are counted.

Such slurs were particularly present during Operation Pillar of Defense, Israel’s November 2012 military campaign against the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza. At a demonstration in Atlanta, one protestor held a sign that read, “Israel, the new Nazis” while another held a sign that had a Star of David pictured with a swastika in its center. Similar offensive messages were displayed at rallies in Chicago and Ft. Lauderdale.

While there has been a proliferation of anti-Semitic expression online, general antiJewish-expressions are not counted for the purposes of the Audit unless they target a specific individual.

The roots of this mission began in August 2011 when the Satmar Hassidic community convinced a group of 30 Jews in Yemen to move to London where they would receive refugee status. After leaving Yemen, the group learned that they were denied entry to the United Kingdom and would be brought to Argentina instead. 10 of these kids (six belonging to Yahia Karni and four belonging to Haim Karni) were on the August 14 flight to Israel.

In recent years, Yemenite Jews have been the targets of threats by Muslim extremists, including those identified with the terrorist group al-Qaeda. The number of anti-Semitic threats and attacks against the Jewish community there

has been on the rise since 2008, when Jewish schoolteacher Moshe Nahari was killed, spiked in 2010 with the murder of Jewish community leader Aaron Zindani, and again in 2012 after the ouster of Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

As a consequence, the number of Yemenite Jews immigrating to Israel in the past few years has reached record highs.

Currently, fewer than 90 Jews live in Yemen, according to Jewish Agency estimates. Half reside in the capital Sana’a in a protected area, while the rest are in Omran province’s city of Rida.

Summer Love at Szarvas the last two decades as a dynamic and vital component of the global Jewish revival.

“It was like love at the first moment,” said Andras, a post-doctoral fellow in chemistry at Bar Ilan University in Ramat Gan, Israel.

Barbi, 37, who leads the camp’s Hungarian Unit during the summer and works at Budapest’s Balint Haz Jewish Community Center during the year, first came to Szarvas when she was 14. “It was fantastic,” she said, smiling.

The couple reconnected in 2001, when Andras returned to Szarvas to work as a youth/camp counselor, under the supervision of Barbi, his unit head.

ome marriages are a match made in heaven. For Barbi Paszternak-Szendy and her husband Andras Paszternak, their June nuptials were a match made in Szarvas.

The pair both attended the pioneering JDC-run international Jewish summer camp in rural Hungary, which has served many thousands of children and teens since 1990 with the help of the Ronald S. Lauder Foundation.

Andras, 32, a Slovakia native, came to Szarvas in 1991 at the age of 10 and fell hard for the camp, which has emerged in

Hoffman, PhD Book Review by Rabbi Deborah Miller May God Remember: Memory and Memorializing in Judaism is Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman’s latest addition to the series Prayers of Awe. As with the previous books in this series, as well as the incomparable My People’s Prayerbook, Rabbi Hoffman continues to develop books that illuminate Jewish liturgy for professional and layperson alike.

The book is an excellent resource, and thought provoking study of some of the most personally and spiritually challenging Jewish prayers.

The focus of May God Remember is the Yizkor service, and the prayers that constitute the Jewish memorial liturgy. Rabbi Hoffman, along with his many contributors, provides a thorough and engaging commentary of these prayers, including their history, theological influences, and biblical and rabbinic sources. The writers of these essays address



the questions of why and how Jewish communities chose to create public memorial services and how these liturgies have changed over time. Are they for those we seek to remember or for those who do the remembering?

As with any edited anthology, different readers will likely respond to the essays in a variety of ways. I was particularly impressed by Rabbi Dalia Marx’s contribution Memorializing the Shoah and Sites and Subjects: Memory in Israeli Culture by Dr. Wendy Zierler, both of which explore how attempts to develop memorial prayers and rituals in response to the Holocaust and in the wake of modern Israeli wars have been affected by the existing Jewish rubrics and what we have learned about memory from the fields of psychology and neuroscience.

The twenty-two pieces that make up the fourth part of the book called “Interpretations and Reflections” contain some of the best commentary and writing about memory in a Jewish context that I have ever been privileged to read.

Although the essays focus almost exclusively on the development of memorial

prayers in the non-Orthodox denominations, the scope of the liturgical references is breathtaking. Readers interested in the history and rituals of Western European Jewish communities, especially the Reform movement’s innovations in 19th century Germany, will be most gratified.

May God Remember: Memory and Memorializing in Judaism is an excellent resource, and thought provoking study of some of the most personally and spiritually challenging Jewish prayers. A reader who forges his or her own path through the collection will have embarked on a meaningful and educational journey.

Food for Thought New Year’s Honey Cake Ingredients: 3½ cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground cloves ½ teaspoon ground allspice 1 cup vegetable oil 1 cup honey 1½ cups granulated sugar ½ cup brown sugar 3 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup warm coffee or strong tea ½ cup fresh orange juice ¼ cup rye or whisky (can be replaced with orange juice or coffee) ½ cup sliced almonds (optional)

Using a strong wire whisk or an electric mixer on low speed, combine the ingredients well to make a thick batter, making sure that no ingredients are stuck to the bottom of the bowl.

Spoon the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle the top of the cake evenly with the almonds. Place the cake pan on 2 baking sheets stacked together and bake until the cake springs back when you touch it gently in the center, about 60 to 70 minutes (depending on your oven, it may need extra time).

Let the cake stand for 15 minutes before removing it from the pan. Then invert it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Makes 8-10 servings.

JFOC-Arad Partnership: Maimonides Society Joins Effort to Improve Medical Services

T

he Israeli town of Arad is perched at the edge of a remote plateau, about 15 miles southwest of the Dead Sea. In addition to having a breathtaking view of the surrounding Negev and Judaea deserts (and great air quality), Arad is home to some 24,000 residents; secular and religious Jews from Israel and the diaspora as well as some Bedouin from the local environs. Arad is a pleasant, welcoming place with a focus on community, civic mindedness, education, culture and overall well-being.

This past spring I had two opportunities to visit Arad, which happens to be our federation’s partner community in Israel. The idea of partnering Jewish communities in Israel with Jewish

communities in North America was launched by JFNA in the mid 1990’s to foster supportive, collaborative relationships and to provide communities in the diaspora with opportunities for personalized, hands-on projects in Israel. This contrasts with the well established, less personal type of philanthropy where donors never know recipients.

Our partnership with Arad has resulted in a sustained commitment over the years, not to mention a number of lasting friendships.

Specifically, we have contributed financially to Arad via our Federation’s Overseas Allocation Fund. We have helped finance projects including a synagogue for a (then) newly established Ethiopian community, as well as a playground for public school children. Our friends in Arad

contribute to the partnership by sending artists from their community and performers from their impressive philharmonic orchestra.

Individuals from our federation often volunteer in Arad, staying free-of-charge while working in the local schools, senior center, or at the local food bank, for example. While on site, volunteers are paired with local families with whom they spend Shabbat and interact with socially.

When last there, I was amazed to see the genuine need for volunteers and touched by the sincere appreciation extended to those willing to help. My most recent visit was prompted by an awareness of the need for more comprehensive medical care in Arad.

Recently, the Arad community added a 24 hour “on call” facility to provide medical services outside of the normal workday hours. Rabbi Kaminer, along with a group of like-minded philanthropists, raised millions of dollars to build this facility. Now they are working to outfit it with modern equipment, including a dialysis unit for residents who are currently undergoing the life saving treatments but must travel long distances several times each week to receive them.

The Lippers and I were struck by the need for this project to come to fruition and inspired by the magnitude of the work that is already well underway. We hope to encourage our federation, Arad’s partner community, to be similarly inspired. Please reach out to our local federation to find out how you can make a difference in Arad. Arrange to visit! Bynet Expo: Israel’s best high-tech secret Drones that monitor farms, a camera that shows what’s happening behind you, and technology to make the next Olympic Games safer were all on display in the 10th annual Bynet Expo in Tel Aviv.

At this year’s Bynet Expo at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds, 60 booths were manned either by external companies displaying how RAD or Bynet solutions worked for them, or showed from the inside what the latest products do.

or the past 10 years, Israeli high-tech icons and brothers Yehuda and Zohar Zisapel have brought their family of companies together for a showcase: the Bynet Expo in Tel Aviv.

Selling services and products for telecom, IT security, wireless mobility, finance, defense, computing and networking, the Zisapel brothers formed RAD Bynet Group in the 1970s. Last year, its 16 different companies - which together form the mother of all high-tech firms in Israel - saw more than $1 billion in sales.

Israelis from large and small high-tech, communications and IT security companies examined new “toys” including drone communications systems for monitoring assets such as farm equipment, and shed-size servers that will make up a new server farm for Israel - its biggest yet, to be built into Jerusalem rock in the holy city.

There were new camera technologies that can stream more teleconferencing on less bandwidth; and talk of how Bynet and RAD

companies are going to make Brazil’s Olympic Games safe for everyone attending and competing.

A special booth for the new lifelike TelePresence by Cisco demonstrated how Bynet knowhow enables HD-quality streaming and voice when a Skype call with clients or business associates just won’t do. FlexPod by Cisco’s Cloupia, a data center in a box, was also attracting attention.

On display there was also a backmounted camera so police officers can see behind their backs, and a driver-less vehicle called G-NIUS, providing video and surveillance systems for border surveillance.

Helping tech giants stay giants

RAD Data Communications owns nine companies, including NASDAQ-traded firms such as Radware and Ceragon Networks.

Bynet Data Communications owns seven companies.

While together both parent companies employ more than 4,500 people in Israel and globally, their names are not household words since they are primarily technical solution providers that give wellknown giants like Cisco, Dell and EMC an edge on their competitors.

Amir Forkosh, vice president of the technology division of Bynet, tells ISRAEL21c that the RAD Bynet Group’s leading services are in the enterprise segments, “ensuring security, mobility and privacy.”

“small group” of 95 teenagers from ORT Argentina packed into ORT House, London, last month for two weeks to find out more about

the organization which supports the education they love. In something resembling a family reunion, the students were told how they were the focus of World ORT’s work and assured that, “mi casa es tu casa”-style, the door of the organization’s administrative headquarters was always open to them.

“Everything we do is for you; it’s for the students in Argentina, India, Israel… wherever we operate. Argentina a place in the Pedagogy 3.0 consortium of HP’s Catalyst Initiative, an international network of leading educators and educational institutions to explore innovative approaches to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

ORT Argentina has maintained the cutting edge nature of its on-line ‘Virtual Campus’ by providing social space for students to discuss what they are learning and share material with each other and their teachers; teachers use it to publish their own virtual educational material so that it is accessible to students at anytime from anywhere in the world. Meanwhile, there has been a steady roll-out of the organization’s one-netbook-perstudent program.

The organization’s strong sense of social responsibility has led it

to share its expertise with the wider community: teachers trained

by ORT Argentina’s Teaching and Learning Resource Centre (CREA) have been showing their peers, at scores of schools in the provinces, how to use software which fosters interaction and collaboration between them and their students, and to extend the boundaries of the classroom through use of the Internet. “The spectacular success of this project may be taking Argentina to the threshold of far-reaching social change,” Ms. Gomes de Mesquita said.

Bynet is also a services provider, and in that scope is a systems integrator, taking several in-house products and combining them with the client’s to create a new solution that works better than the old one.

With intense pressure to save money, and an enormous cost to upgrade existing technologies, it is not unheard of for a company to spend up to 75 percent of money invested in a technology to upgrade it to new standards.

Typically the group works with the chief information officers of technology companies to integrate hardware, software and other tech products into existing or new technologies.

Bynet Communications helped the company Aleppo develop communications for a small drone about the size of a toy helicopter. Fitted with a camera, the drone streams information back to the base station, helping farmers keep an eye on their assets even when the cows roam far from home.

Bynet CEO Alon Ben-Zur said that one of the company’s growth engines this year will be providing services to foreign companies under the threat of cyber-attacks.

But fear was not the focus of this all-out tech lover’s event. Israeli confidence in its high-tech smarts shone through.

While the Bynet Expo is heavily advertised in the Hebrew speaking world, it should attract more foreigners looking to find the chefs who are making Israel’s secret “startup nation” sauce.

The students, accompanied by six teachers, were in England for two weeks, studying English in the mornings and spending the rest of each day soaking up the local culture. It was a trip enjoyed and appreciated by all, but of special significance to a few.

“This was my first time on an airplane and my first time abroad,” said Alejo Ezequiel, 15, an electronics major. “I’ve always dreamed of studying at ORT and now that I have a scholarship my family can send me

there. Every day I appreciate the amazing opportunities that are open to me, taking part in the model United Nations in Buenos Aires, competing in the math Olympiad… and I’ve learned to play guitar and bass and to compose music.”

Mava Azul, also 15, and a scholarship recipient, is a music production major. “I’ve always wanted to study at ORT because of all the opportunities and activities. ORT gives us so many choices in life; it’s the best choice I’ve ever made. Each day, going to school, for me is living! Without the help of donors it wouldn’t have been possible for me to be at ORT,” she said.

Alejo added: “Being in London is an experience that both of us will remember forever, and it’s because of ORT that we can do this.”

ORT Argentina plays a pivotal role in advancing and sustaining the country’s Jewish community. Intense investment in teacher training in digital technology and crafting innovative new pedagogic material impacts the education and career paths of the next generation.

ORT Argentina includes two educational campuses that cover 37,000 square meters and a new science and technology center, made possible with the help of World ORT’s Latin America Campaign, with state-of-the-art labs in fields such as mechatronics, media production, applied math, design and architecture, biochemistry, physics and environmental sciences on another 6,000 square meters of floor space.

ORT Argentina has a technical high-school with more than 4,500 students, two postsecondary junior colleges with some 1,000 students each, and a department which develops cooperative projects and training programs with other institutions and enterprises. Of the total Jewish high school population in and around Buenos Aires, 80 percent attend an ORT school.

But, as became apparent during a question and answer session with the Head of World ORT’s Education Department, Daniel Tysman, most students do not have a clear sense of how their school fits in with the international ORT family.

“We wanted them to understand the relationship between us and World ORT and how it all works,” said English Department Coordinator, Ana Paula Tubio. “They were eager to know the story of ORT and to meet the people behind the organization.

They value a lot what they receive and they want to know how they receive so many opportunities.”

Student coordinator Pablo Benitez added: “This has been an amazing visit, such a warm welcome; we’re extremely happy that we came.”
