Name of art piece : A House for Miriam Medium: Canvas embroidery, cotton thread and tape on linen. Size of art piece: 11" w by 14" h

Explanation: ``And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously;'' (Exodus 15:20--21) The top of this embroidery depicts the prophetess Miriam leading the women of Israel in song, music, and dance to thank God for delivering her people by the parting of the Red Sea. In the Bible `house' is often used to denote descendants, but the Bible makes no mention of any descendants of Miriam. She was always a much-loved figure, and in legend it was said that the chief builder of the Tabernacle, Bezalel son of Uri, and after him King David were of her house. In this embroidery I stretch the definition of `house' to include Miriam's spiritual descendants: women who have carried on her tradition of singing, dancing, and making music.

Name of art piece: The Yellow Star of David Medium: Canvas embroidery, cotton thread and black marker on silk gauze. Size of art piece: 12" w by 12" h Piece for sale Explanation: The size and shape of this star are approximately those of the badges Jews had to sew onto their clothes under Nazi rule. But it is made of images of people, not of plain yellow cloth. A black marker was used to wipe out areas of carefully worked embroidery. The black lines fell arbitrarily on the small figures, obliterating some, cutting through others, miraculously sparing a few.

Name of art piece: Like Water in the Desert Medium: Canvas embroidery, cotton, linen, and silk thread with supports on cotton canvas. Size of art piece: 4" by 4" by 7" h

Explanation: The desert's dryness changes the way you feel about water. If you suddenly see a lot of it, all that water is startling, rejuvenating, and truly delightful. And sometimes, in an oasis, water that would otherwise lie underground, hidden by layers of rock and sand, really does gush forth! I have used this piece as a non-functional Miriam's cup on the Seder table, because of Miriam's association with water: legend has it that as the People of Israel wandered in the desert, there was a freshwater well which followed her.

Name of art piece: Rainbow and a Cloud Medium: terracotta Size of art piece: 6”x6”x3” Piece for sale The piece is inspired by nature, by the moments when Hashem let our mind touch a depth of His miraculous design as it said in Psalm 19 “… the sky proclaims His handiwork. Day to day speech streams forth; night to night expresses knowledge. There no utterance, there no words; …”. Our memories are sometimes like a reflection in a puddle, a mirrored fragment framed by a random line...

Name of art piece: Great Tekiah Medium: terracotta Size of art piece: 16”x16”x4” Piece for sale The single sound of shofar marks the end of the Yom Kippur service, gates are closed. This last blast calls a Great Tekiah. The piece is inspired by Yom Kippur service provided by Rabbi Sholem Raices.

Name of art piece: Six Days II Medium: terracotta Size of art piece: 35”x42” Piece for sale

“Six Days” depicts the six Days of Creation. The set of six terracotta relieves supposed to be read right to left, from top to the bottom follow the biblical order. Each relief is 10”x20” the first day - light was created the second day - the sky was created the third day - dry land, seas, plants and trees were created the fourth day - the Sun, Moon and stars were created the fifth day - creatures that live in the sea and creatures that fly were created the sixth day - animals that live on the land and finally humans, made in the image of God were created by day seven - God finished his work of creation and rested, making the seventh day a special holy day.

"Day Third" has a special story. It was my first ‘Day Third” I have started. Working on it a few days I wasn't satisfied how it goes. I covered unfinished piece in plastic and started a new one from scratch. I came back to the first one in a few weeks. I opened the piece and I couldn't believe what I've seen. At the bottom part of the relief representing ground were growing a few tiny plants. Tiny beautiful green plants with 2-3 leaves on each one. You know what happen on the Third Day: after dry land appeared and waters were gathered in seas the earth brought forth vegetation. I've never seen plants growing in my clay piece. And it's happen now. I was watching those plants for a while, didn't like to destroy them. Eventually I finish the relieve sculpting a similar plants at the points where live ones started. I keep this relief separate from the set. Sometimes I'm coming to look at it and looking I'm still a bit in disbelieving that that really happen.

Name of art piece: Sukkot on the Roof Medium: terracotta, sculpture relief Size of art piece: 12”x22” Piece for sale

Usually I put my sukkah on a driveway and enjoy my favorite Holyday, Sukkot. The year of 5775 was different, I installed the sukkah on my roof deck and my elevation took a new level. When I’m I a sukkah I feel like I’m in a cloud, the things subjected to gravity all are behind or below. In do not know if you are familiar with that feeling. So I am, and this piece is a representation of my Sukkot. The Hebrew words are from Psalm 27. David said “…He will conceal me in the hidden places of his tent; …”. In this context a “tent” is a sukkah.

Name of art piece: Memories of Montreal Medium: terracotta Size of art piece: 16”x16”x4” In 2007 Sasha, my youngest son and I were skiing at Mont Tremblant, Canada about 80 miles from Montreal. It supposed to be a rainy day and we decided to drop skiing and go to Montreal to explore a city. We didn’t have particular plans, just walked through downtown under the rain and from time to time we would look for a shelter in cafes and art galleries. Crossing a tiny park in between buildings we noticed a monument. Coming closer we realized it was dedicated to Raoul Wallenberg. We stopped and I told Sasha who this man was… We were looking at the bust for a long time. I still feel an importance of that moment.

Name of art piece: Chanukah Menorah Medium: terracotta Size of art piece: 16”x16”x4” Piece for sale

The piece represents the Temple that was cleaned and prepared for the service after victory over Syrian Greeks . One side of the piece is tablets with Ten Commandments. The opening in between is a door opening to the Temple with words from the Psalm 24 above “… be lifted up, eternal doors, so the glorious King may enter.” Other side of menorah is covered with fruits and plants which are abundant in the land of Israel. On the top is a dreidel with a candle holder.

Name of art piece: Living Ruins Medium of art piece: terracotta Size of art piece: 16”x16”x4” Piece for sale

This is a dedication to the Temple, writing at the stone says"to the Trumpeting place..." showing the direction to men of the tribe of Levi where to perform.

Name of art piece: Things we see and things we don’t Medium: terracotta Size of art piece: 16”x16”x4” Piece for sale

This piece inspired by hiking in Colorado and by David’s Psalms.

Name of art piece: Memorial Book Medium: bronze Size of art piece: 16”x16”x4” Commisions available

This piece has been mounted at the top of granite monument at one of Chicago cemeteries. It has been dedicated to my friend who was a religious Jew, highly educated and avid reader and a great man. He passed away, and I was thinking about him. I’ve got a vision of a book left at the park bench by my friend. Light wind was turning its pages. Talking to his widow I asked her if she like to add a sculptural piece to the monument. She loved the idea. Working on a piece I integrated shapes of the turning pages and waves and with that came a feeling of eternity. Life changes forms and never ends.

Name of Artist: Dorit Jordan Dotan Location of Artist: Chicago, Illinois Artist Website: www.doritjordan.com Instagram: @doritjordan

Atlit Salt Flats, on the Mediterranean coast of Haifa, Israel. These salt pools are direct continuations of archeological evidence of how ancient communities collected water here, into natural evaporation pools for the harvesting of sea salt. These salt pools, are also a recognized nature reserve for many migrating birds. The salt collection pools are shown in various states, depending on the changing seasons and the stages in the salt drying process. The photographs show the progression of the changes in the water itself as it transforms from liquid to solid, as a result of evaporation. The form of its matter undergoes a fundamental change. The salt’s surprisingly pink hues come from naturally- occurring algae in the water, and are intensified by the quality of light that surrounds and infuses the shoreline. The images allow us to see water in a truly different light. The compounds the water produces (salt, algae) create new textures. What formerly flowed and moved is stilled and solidified. Although the water has undergone a fundamental change of its form, it is yet full of life, and continues to be a stimulating environment and an ecological niche for the living things that find food and protection within it.

Photographs are for sale in fine art archival print in limited addition.
