There were tears and moments I wanted to give up but everyone made sure I got the results I wanted. Knowing that I can go into a clothes shop and not worry if their clothes will fit me is amazing. The gym and healthy eating are now my lifestyle and I don't think I could be happier.”

Poster campaign controversy By Eoghan McNeill news@thecorknews.ie

Yes Equality Cork has sharply criticised a poster being used to encourage a ‘No’ vote in the upcoming equality referendum. The advocacy group told The Cork News that they have contacted the Referendum Commission about posters used by Mothers And Fathers Matter, who are opposed to marriage equality. The posters carry the banner “Surrogacy?” and exhort voters to vote no. “As an approved body under the Referendum Act of 1998, Yes Equality Cork have contacted the Referendum Commission about the ‘Surrogacy’ poster,” a Yes Equality Cork spokesperson said. Louise O’Donnell says the issue of surrogacy is not relevant to the referendum: “It just doesn’t make sense to drag in issues that are being dealt with by another bill,” she

said, referring to the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015. “It scares me that people may be misinformed, and forming their opinions based on falsehoods.” Ms O’Donnell told The Cork News the ‘No’ campaign has resorted to “scare tactics”. “In my view, their actual arguments are discriminatory. They use these arguments as a last resort,” she stated. Anna Shephard, a Cork–based member of Mothers And Fathers Matter, argued that the poster’s message is relevant: “Those contacting the commission obviously don’t feel the issue is relevant to the referendum. We feel it is. We fully respect that two men or two women can love each other. We just want to protect the family,” she told us. “If we pass this referendum, all people will have the right to marry. If you get married, you have the right to found a family. If two men get married, they

cannot produce a baby. The only way for two men to produce a baby is through using surrogacy.” “Babies are biologically hardwired to want a mother,” Ms Shephard continued. A spokesman for the Referendum Commission said they would not comment on the surrogacy issue, but indicated that a statement on their website could be taken as the commission’s official stance. The statement reads “The Children and Family Relationships Act 2015 deals with parentage in the cases of donor–assisted births but not with surrogacy.” “The Children and Family Relationships Act 2015 has been passed and will be enacted regardless of the outcome of the marriage equality referendum,” Paddy Walsh of the commission said to The Cork News. Yes Equality Cork has asked the public to contact the Referendum Commission in relation to any poster they feel conveys an untruthful message.

Editor’s letter W

ith very few exceptions, we all want what’s best. Not just for ourselves; for everyone. Deep down, most humans have the capacity, and usually the urge, to be decent, kind, giving, cooperative creatures. There are lots of reasons for this. For one, this is the way we’ve evolved and it’s served us well as a species. We’re not particularly tough, when it comes down to it. We’re not especially fast, either. We don’t have claws or talons or fangs, and pretty much any other animal our size is capable of taking us in a fair fight. With the exception of our overpowered brains, we’re actually quite puny. If we weren’t inclined to have one another’s backs we’d have expired long before we’d had a chance to spread out around the world on a journey which has seen us diversify into all sorts of wonderful shapes and sizes and colours and cultures. Teamwork is one of the trademarks of Homo sapiens, every bit as much as babbling about whatever nonsense crosses our enormous minds, or running on two feet, or twiddling our opposable thumbs. If we didn’t possess an altruistic streak a mile wide, we’d have been extinct a long time ago. We do have a problem though, sometimes a very big one, in agreeing what “best” actually means. That holds whether we’re talking about ourselves, our loved ones, or society at large. Depending on where you get your information, good/better and bad/worse can mean radically different things. It’s important to remember that very often — not always by any means, but more often than not — even when someone’s point of view seems so opposed to yours that it must seem impossible that they have anyone’s best interests at heart, most of us do what we think is right. We feed the hungry, protect the vulnerable and defend the helpless. That’s the way we’re programmed. Sometimes it seems as if we’re surrounded by division. We neglect the simple act of stepping back, taking a deep breath, and approaching our problems with a modicum of calm. As President Obama memorably said, there is so much more that unites us than divides us. His words may ring a little hollow sometimes — George Hook’s column this week is a powerful reminder of just how low we can sink if we’re not on our guard — but I refuse to believe that anyone who disagrees with me (or with you) is inherently ‘on the wrong side’ of everything. In some instances, a person’s point of view can be so repugnant and contrary to our own that it’s easy to demonise and dehumanise them. But, in all but the worst cases, somebody still loves that person, be it a parent or a child or a partner or a best friend. It’s a dreadful mistake to think that one person’s love is any less legitimate than another’s. We can disagree, and insult, and harangue and attack but we diminish ourselves if we lose sight of the human being on the receiving end of our slings and arrows. To quote that other great man of the people, Gary Barlow, “have a little patience”. We accomplish miracles together, and we are stronger together than apart. Compromise is the art of giving a little of what you hold dear and in return helping someone else to carry their burden. Eventually, slowly, we nearly always meet in the middle and even the most bitter enemies can start to become new friends. It’s an ideal worth fighting for.

Cork GP appeals for licensing of abortion medication A Cork GP has appealed for abortion medication to be licensed by the Irish Medicines Board (IMB), following the news that more than 1,000 of the pills were seized in Ireland last year. Customs seized 1,017 mifepristone and misoprostol pills in 2014, an increase of more than 100% on 2013’s figure of 438. While the tablets used to induce abortion are not licensed by the IMB, Dr Mary Favier of Doctors for Choice has said the medication is “very safe.” “Doctors for Choice wouldn’t advise buying these pills online, but we understand why women do so. Misoprostol is a very commonly used drug in obstetrics and gynecology. It is very safe, and widely used. It becomes potentially unsafe, however, when people can’t be sure of the drug’s source, content or manufacturing process,” Dr Favier told The Cork News.

Dr Favier, a GP at the Parklands Surgey, went on to say that a “very small risk” arises when buying the medication online, due to the medication’s current status: “Women are forced to take these pills in cases of silence and subterfuge, without a medical professional,” she said. A Cork organiser with ROSA (Reproductive rights, against Oppression, Sexism & Austerity) has spoken of her efforts in helping women to obtain the medication: “Women have come to us looking for help getting mifepristone and misoprostol. It’s a very intimidating situation. I’ve assisted three women personally. That could mean securing a Northern Irish address to have the pills posted to, for example,” said Fiona Ryan. Ms Ryan says the increase in seizures in 2014 is an indicator of financial hardship

in Ireland: “It’s a symptom of austerity. We see a lot of women of lower incomes who can’t afford to travel to England. This is going to continue – it’s a measure of the country’s attitude to exporting the issue of abortion. If you’re poor, you’re stuck,” she told The Cork News. While Ms Ryan said that ROSA does not advocate for online outlets selling the medication, she insisted that it is safe: “It’s on the World Heath Organisation’s Essential Medicines list, and it is statistically safer than Viagra. If the source isn’t legitimate, however, you have a small chance of getting a bad batch. “If the pills were legal, we wouldn’t have this problem,” she continued. Speaking in the Dáil this week, Cork North Central TD and junior health min-

ister Kathleen Lynch emphasised that there is “no guarantee as to the safety, quality or efficacy of medicines purchased online. Medicines purchased in this manner are often found to be counterfeit and/or with inaccurate labelling or product information. “In addition, any prescription medicine should be taken by a patient only when it has been prescribed for them by their medical practitioner or other appropriate health professional who has taken the person’s medical history into account,” she also said. The CEO of Cork’s Sexual Health Centre concurred with Minister Lynch’s sentiments: “It’s not just a question of popping a pill,” she said. “There is a level of physical and emotional trauma involved. It’s neither medically nor emotionally safe,” Deirdre Seery told The Cork News.

Cork Airport not operating on level playing field, says Martin Fianna Fáil leader and Cork South Central TD Micheál Martin has called for an acknowledgement of the fact that Cork Airport is “not operating on a level playing field.” Deputy Martin claimed that the Cork and Shannon Airport split has allowed Shannon to offer more competitive rates to airlines, driving customers from Cork. “There has been little acknowledgement of the fact that Cork Airport has been put at disadvantage. “The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has been quite mute on this fact. “The airport needs an independent board reestablished. “It doesn’t suit the DAA authorities to have a strong, independent Cork Airport board, though,” he told The Cork News. Head of Communications for Cork Airport Kevin Cullinane disputed Deputy Martin’s claims regarding airline

rates: “We can’t go cheaper than zero, which is what we currently offer to any airlines starting new routes” he said. “Our airline rates are 17% cheaper than Dublin Airport, and 8% cheaper than Europe-

an airports. Our rates haven’t increased in over ten years,” he told us. Mr Cullinane said that a southern regional marketing fund is needed to secure the airport’s future: “We need to see a regional

marketing fund put in place, selling the region we serve. Cork is underperforming in terms of inbound tourism. If we can boost that, the airport could harness positive effects,” he said. Meanwhile, Conor Healy,

Cork Chamber, said that the DAA has acknowledged the supposed competitive disadavantage Cork Airport has been placed at, and repeated calls for a significant route development fund to be put in place.

Tighter controls need to be put in place so that only qualified or experienced people look after exotic animals, the Cork Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has said, after scorpions, tarantulas, centipedes and snakes were taken into the animal welfare organisation’s care in the city last week. The CSPCA was alerted by several people about the conditions and care the predators had been receiving at a home in Cork. 96 animals were removed, of which 54 were already dead. The animals’ owner “co-operated fully” said CSPCA manager Vincent Cashman, and the remaining 42 animals will be re–homed at Fota Wildlife Park, Tayto Park in Meath and in a private sanctuary.

More than 20 million Americans suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a problem caused by damage to the nerves that supply your arms and legs. This painful condition interferes with your body’s ability to transmit messages to your muscles, skin, joints, or internal organs. If ignored or mistreated, neuropathy can lead to irreversible health conditions. Why not get help by those trained to correct the major cause of peripheral neuropathy? Data from the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners’ Job Analysis of Chiropractic lists arm and leg neuropathy as the second most common nerve problem treated by chiropractors.

• You’ll get to see everything first hand and find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution, like it has been for so many other patients. The appointment will not take long at all. And you won’t be sitting in a waiting room all day either.

O’Flynn gets three years in jail Former Fianna Fáil Cork City Councillor Gary O’Flynn will spend three years in jail for soliciting someone to kill an accountant, a Revenue official and a Garda. Mr O’Flynn, of Hayfield Drive in Whitechurch, was handed a five–year sentence for soliciting the murders, for €10,000, of Patrick Sweeney, George Ross and Mary Skehan, with the last two years suspended. He was also jailed for three years concurrently on charges of mortgage fraud. The former councillor, mortgage advisor and solicitor pleaded guilty to the charges at Cork Circuit Criminal Court. He had been under investigation for filing false accounts and using false documentation. Garda Skehan and Mr Ross had been part of that investigation. The third person whom Mr O’Flynn tried to have killed, Patrick Sweeney, had been his business partner and accountant. A psychiatrist told the court

that Mr O’Flynn was suffering from depression and anxiety and had exhibited suicidal tendencies in prison. In a letter from Mr O’Flynn read before the court, he said

he had been “in a demented state of mind” and apologised to Garda Skehan, Mr Ross and Mr McSweeney for what he described as “insane and demented rantings”.

Almost 9,000 patients were left waiting on trolleys in hospitals last month, with 702 of them on trolleys in Cork hospitals. According to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, 412 patients were on trolleys in Cork University Hospital’s Emergency Department and wards in March, compared to 304 during the same period in 2014. However, the CUH figure is considerably down on 2011, when 843 patents were reported on trollies during the month of March.

“Health service is too small to meet demands.” In Bantry General Hospital, 39 patients were on trolleys last month, down from 42 in March 2014, while the Mercy

University Hospital saw 251 patients on trolleys, up from 222 in the same month last year. INMO General Secretary, Liam Doran stated the country’s health service “continues to be too small to adequately, and safely, meet the demands being placed upon it”. He said it is “imperative” that Health Minister Leo Varadkar immediately establishes the “monitoring/implementation group to oversee the speedy delivery of all of the changes contained in the Emergency Taskforce Report”.

O’Shea turns up the heat with new challenge Record breaker will run “Like any four marathons a day race it will By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

A record–breaking Cork firefighter who ran a marathon in full fire gear last year is now attempting to run the length of Ireland in three and a half days. Ballineen father– of–four Alex O’Shea shot to fame after he set a new Guinness World Record, running the entire 26.2 miles of the Cork City Marathon in full fire gear — including a 3.5lb firefighter’s helmet, steelcapped boots and fire–retardant pants and jacket — in a time of three hours, 41 minutes and 10 seconds. Now the 41 year old is preparing to run from Mizen Head in west Cork to Malin Head in Donegal, covering the equivalent of four marathons a day. Alex hopes to be in a position to challenge the existing world record, which cur-

rently stands at three days, 15 hours, 36 minutes and 23 seconds set by renowned British ultra runner Mimi Anderson in 2012. Alex told The Cork News that in 2013, when he started thinking about running the marathon in fire gear, he had never run more than 10 miles. Now after completing the mammoth task, he’s decided that this year means a “new challenge”. “The challenge is to run from Malin Head to Mizen Head as quickly as I can,” he said. “At 41, I am not getting any younger and with the kids getting more involved in various extracurricular activities, my window of opportunity to challenge myself like this is closing.” Alex explained that he plans to start the run early on the morning of Sunday, September 6th. “I will have a camper van travel with me so I can have small breaks or

medical attention as needed,” he said, adding that the days will be filled with “high milage, short breaks and little sleep”. “Nutrition will also play a big part in this challenge as it will be very difficult to balance nutritional intake and running,” he said.

The biggest concern, he added, is planning the route and staying on it when when he’s fatigued at night, and the weather is also a worry. Alex is building up his milage at the moment, running 100 miles a week. “This is made up of one or two marathons and a few half marathons,” he said. “Nothing less than 10 miles per training session. I also try to get to the pool, usually with the kids, but this is for recovery only.” He joked that he’s “mad” to take on a challenge like this, but also motivated and determined. “Like any race it will start with a single step and a lot of motivation and determination to get you to the start line,” he said. “Having never raced an event longer than a marathon or an event over multiple days, the odds are stacked against me. But like most Irish people we perform better when we are the underdog.” Alex will be raising funds for the Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind and further information is available at ‘Challenge Alex’ on Facebook.

Nearly 14,000 Cork 18–25s not registered to vote As many as 30% of Cork’s 18–25s are still not registered to vote, in spite of an intensive awareness campaign ahead of the May 22nd equality referendum. Time is running out for what could well be a decisive voting bloc as the country goes to the polls to decide on the issue of marriage equality, as the deadline for registration is May 5th. A RedC/NYCI poll carried out late last year found that up to 13,589 young people in Cork City and County risk missing out on having their voices heard in the referendum. The figures break down further to just over 3,600 unregistered young people in the city and almost 10,000 in the county. James Doorley, National Youth Council of Ireland

“The vast majority of them want to vote but are not aware they have to register.” deputy director, explained: “We know from our work with young people that the vast majority of them want to vote but are not aware they have to register to vote or only become aware after the deadline for in-

clusion in the supplementary register. This is particularly an issue for young people who turned 18 and became eligible to vote since the local and European elections in 2014.” Any young person who is 18 years of age on or before the 22nd of May is eligible to vote. If they are not currently registered, they can do so by downloading and filling in the RFA2 form at checktheregister.ie. This form must be brought to and stamped at a Garda Station — where the applicant is required to bring ID — and returned to the local authority before close of business on Tuesday, May 5th. “With the upcoming bank holiday weekend the latest day for posting the form is effectively Friday, May 1st,” highlighted Mr Doorley.

Hook uncorked Seventy years after the end of World War II, George Hook explains why justice must still be served, and the lost must never be forgotten. george@thecorknews.ie

T

he train journey from the bustling Bavarian town of Ingolstadt to Dachau takes less than an hour. In just 48 minutes a person can be transported from the bright, lush landscape on the banks of the river Danube into a soulless grey gloom, where birds refuse to take flight. The approach to Dachau is best served in silence. Idle conversation seems almost disrespectful. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when the greens and yellows of the beautiful Bavarian countryside transform to darker shades of grey and blue, but the realisation that it has happened is a stirring jolt to the system. It is as if Dachau appears out of thin air and sneaks into the consciousness like an enveloping mist. Perhaps it’s the deliberate postponement of dread that comes with anxiousness, but however much one tries to prepare for the grim reality that is Dachau, horror still suffocates the approach. Here, Mother Nature’s disarming charm is notable only by its absence. A stagnant chill dominates the camp area, even in the height of summer. The sun, uneasy with its task, refuses to shine light into this dark, dreary place. Even now, coming up on 70 years since its closure, Dachau haunts the landscape with the ghost of victims past. A walk around the camp is a deeply upsetting experience. The living quarters are pitiful in their sparsity: single wooden planks act as beds where hundreds of prisoners squeezed into claustrophobic rooms. The heat of summer made the stench and humidity unbearable and there was little protection from the icy frost of winter. Disease and starvation were rampant. Torture rooms still stand where prisoners were beaten and flogged. Standing cells

and hanging poles are dotted around the camp, as are the many places of execution where the murders of 32,000 men, women and children were recorded. Thousands more died undocumented. The unspeakable horrors that took place in the concentration camps under the Nazi regime are littered throughout the many books and films that serve as proof of one of mankind’s worst ever atrocities. Though many Germans refuse to look back, the camps remain open to visitors so that history will never forget. Today, seventy years after the end of World War II, justice still chases the last remaining survivors of the Nazi regime.

“Dachau haunts the landscape with the ghost of victims past.“

The trial of Oscar Gröning opened in Lüneburg this week to much publicity. The frail 93 year old, walking with the aid of a zimmerframe, looks far removed from the stereotypical image of a ruthless Nazi officer. Gröning admits ‘moral guilt’ from his role in Auschwitz, where his job as a bookkeeper was to take prisoners’ suitcases and steal any valuable contents that were left inside. Though he did not participate directly in the gassing of millions of prisoners in the camp, he faces a charge of assisting to murder in 300,000 cases. Dragging an old man before a court may seem like a pointless task for many Germans

who, according to a recent survey in Stern magazine, are in favour of drawing a line under any remaining links to the Nazi party and moving forward under a process of closure, but for the few remaining survivors of the Holocaust itself these prosecutions serve as closure in their own struggle for recognition and justice. Germany’s great shame has been compounded by the fact that very few of the perpetrators of the Holocaust have ever been brought to justice. Most of the senior figures involved in the running of the concentration camps escaped without charge or punishment. The faceless killers

of the gas chambers passed on in anonymity. Now, with Gröning finally facing his day in court, some survivors have spoken of the importance of the judicial process itself as a means of attaining some sort of closure. For most, punishing or imprisoning a 93–year–old man will serve no purpose, but the chance to heal through a process of public recognition or a decree of guilt from the accused is perhaps sufficient to allow the healing process to finish. Monday was Adolf Hitler’s birthday, and so that the atrocities of Nazi Germany may never be repeated, it is vital that the Holocaust is never forgotten.

As Father Ted celebrates its 20th anniversary, Mrs Doyle actress Pauline McLynn has spoken of her support for a ‘Yes’ vote in May’s equality referendum and encouraged the people of Cork to hold a “Tea and Cake” event over the May Bank Holiday weekend to bring people together in order to discuss their views on the vote. “For me it’s very simple: no one should be denied the right to marry the person they love. Unfortunately at the moment, even in 21st century Ireland, not everyone is treated equal. But voting ‘Yes’ on May 22nd is a huge step towards strengthening

‘Yes’ campainger abuse was ‘isolated incident’ Mayday! Mayday! The RNLI has appealed to the people of Cork to support the lifesaving work of their volunteer crews during the charity’s Mayday campaign. From Friday, May 1st until Monday May 4th, yellow– welly themed collections and fundraising events will be taking place in Cork, referencing the yellow wellington boots worn by RNLI crew members. Funds raised through street collections and corporate events will contribute to training, equipment and maintenance costs at RNLI stations in Youghal, Ballycotton, Crosshaven, Kinsale, Courtmacsherry, Union Hall, Baltimore

and Castletownbere, “We are the youngest lifeboat station in Ireland, and we rely on the generosity of the public to help our lifeboat station save lives at sea,” said John Kelleher, RNLI Union Hall. Last year, RNLI lifeboat crews in Cork took to the water 162 times, rescuing 255 people. Yellow welly pin badges will be available on Cork streets for the duration of the Mayday campaign, while donations of €4 can be made by texting RNLIMAYDAY to 50300. For information on holding a corporate event, see rnli.org/ mayday.

Yes Equality Cork — one of the groups campaigning for a ‘Yes’ vote in the May 22nd equality referendum — has stressed that abuse hurled at one of their canvassers in Cork was an “isolated incident.” On Friday, April 17th, a married father of three campaigning for a ‘Yes’ vote in the Dublin Hill area was told “There weren’t enough gas chambers created for you lot,” by a local resident. According to Arthur Leahy of Yes Equality Cork, the incident is not representative of canvassers’ experiences as they take part in the group’s campaign thus far: “We would stress that this was an isolated incident, and the reaction to our canvassing has in fact been very positive. “Those campaigning on behalf of Yes Equality Cork are ordinary people: friends, family members and people who genuinely believe that

Supply vs demand causes housing problem Leeside A lack of suitable housing has been blamed for rising house prices in both Cork City and county. The average price of a three–bedroom semi–detached house in Cork City has increased by 3.77 percent to €275,000, while an increase of 2.3 percent to €110,000 has been recorded in the county. The findings are part of a national survey which was carried out by the Real Estate Alliance (REA), and can be explained by a lack of supply of suitable properties in the region, according to an REA member: “There is a distinct lack of supply in Cork City and surrounding towns, with no construction activity. “For this reason, properties that are on the market are attracting a lot of interest. We do not see supply volumes increasing and this will drive prices up even further. “There are a lot of mortgage approvals already in place but they are struggling to find the right property,” said Michael O’Donohue, REA O’Donohue Clark, Cork. Cork City’s average three– bed semi price puts the area above the national average,

which has risen by 16.23 percent to €187,153. The average house price has risen by just 1.32 percent over the same period, again indicating a shortage of suitable three–bed semi–detached houses on the market, according to the REA chief executive. “There is an acute lack of supply of three–bedroom family homes because it is still not financially viable in many areas for builders to

Cork burning film may fetch €150,000 By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

Rare footage of Cork patriot Michael Collins, along with the razing of Cork by the Black and Tans, feature in a film collection capturing Ireland’s War of Independence that goes up for auction

next month, valued at over €150,000. The footage, contained in 12 cans of safety film and one of nitrate, details the 1916 Rising, The 1919-21 War of Independence and The Civil War, mostly never before seen. It’s the big draw of the History & Literature auction at Whyte’s in Dublin on Saturday, May 9th.

Speaking to The Cork News, Stuart Purcell of Whyte’s said the 360 minutes of film contain “extraordinary footage” of buildings being shelled and people being shot on the streets of Cork. My Whyte expects the film to go to a university “out of the country”. The auction also includes a

32–inch harp given to Maud Gonne by WB Yeats and subsequently gifted to the daughter of the first republican Lord Mayor of Cork, Tomás MacCurtain. Maud Gonne used it to accompany Yeats while he recited his poetry. It has an estimated guide price of between €10,000 and €15,000.

Today, April 24th, Armenians around the world commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. A century ago the "Young Turkish" government ordered the Ottoman police to arrest and execute Armenians in Constantinople, the capital city of the Ottoman Empire. This marked the beginning of what we consider to be a genocide, the first of the 20th century, which cost the lives of 1.5 million men, women and children. Since then, successive Turkish Governments hold the line of state–led negationism.

Victims and their descendants, and those asking Turkey to recognize this as genocide, face sanctions. Despite this policy, hope remains through an increasingly engaged Turkish civil society. Courageous initiatives from Turks such as historian Taner Akçam, Nobel Prize Winner Orhan Pamuk, political scientist Cengiz Aktar and many others have helped address the taboo — for some at the expense of their lives. Such initiatives are critical to enable a fair and sincere reconciliation between the Turks and the Armenians.

Hispanic heritage celebrated in Cork A new organisation has been formed to help promote the Spanish language and Hispanic traditions among the 4,000 native Spanish speakers and thousands of Spanish language enthusiasts in Cork. “There has been a considerable number of Spanish people moving to Cork over the last number of years. Some are having children here who, growing up in Cork, will never have problems with English or the Irish side of their heritage. “With the Cork Hispanic Association, we’d like to help push the Spanish language and Hispanic heritage,” said Cian O’Mahony, committee member. The CHA are set to hold their first official party, which they’ve dubbed their Inaugural Fiesta, on Saturday, April 25th at the Lifetime Lab on the Lee Road. All Spanish–speaking Cork families are welcome at the 1.30pm event to share food, drink, games and music

Community Radio, a music show featuring the best work from Australian musicians. “Cork’s a trip. I don’t have much recollection of the place since I was last here,” Mr Corr told The Cork News. He was quick to point out that his show, which will target the late 20s to early 30s crowd, will be “subtle” and

in no way “trite.” “It’s a look at Cork city and west Cork from an outsider’s perspective,” he said. Skibbereen–based Corr said that early episodes will feature contributions from Cork blues band Crow Black Chicken. Mr Corr has presented Jake, Joe & The Cleaning Lady, a Ricky Gervais Show–style podcast.

Lusitania conference The centenary of the sinking of the Lusitania off the coast of Cork is to be marked with a major public conference in UCC. Taking place Wednesday, May 6th, the conference will cover the local relief effort, the personal stories of those who died, the reaction to the loss in the US, and other related topics. Carrying 1,962 people, the

passenger ship was sunk on Friday, May 7th 1915 after being struck by a German torpedo, killing 1,191 passengers and crew. With 128 US citizens killed in the sinking off the Old Head of Kinsale, the event is considered one of the primary factors that led to US involvement in the First World War, in 1917.

The UCC commemorative conference, The Lusitania and the war at sea, 1914-18, is being held in the university’s Boole I lecture theatre and is free to attend. For more information, contact organiser Gabriel Doherty, UCC School of History, on g.doherty@ UCC.ie.

Daytripper Saxophonist and award–winning swing DJ Gary Baus moved to Cork in 2001, and last year became an Irish citizen. He plays at the Prohibition Party featuring the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, part of the Ballydehob Jazz Festival, on Saturday, May 2nd.

The time I wake up at depends on whether I’m working the night before. As a musician, sometimes you work really late nights, and by the time you pack up and get paid, maybe have a drink or two, you may not be home until four or five in the morning. Ideally, I really like a good power breakfast: scrambled eggs, some grilled mackerel from the market or from my buddy who goes fishing. If I’m up early, I might do some community work with People Before Profit on the street leafleting, trying to distribute information about the water charges. Over the years, I had always been talking about injustice, anywhere I saw it, and joining the protests against water charges was a life changing moment for me. My journey towards challenging power happened through a few early life experiences. There was my resistance to the strict authoritarian and religious upbringing that my parents subjected me to, witnessing poverty in my hometown of Baltimore, and then personally experiencing poverty as an immigrant and a musician in Prague. I moved there in 1998, and we were all extremely poor. It was kind of heaven and hell rolled into one. We were free, and there was lots of creativity going on, but at the same time we were so poor, and it was very hard to find jobs. We were hungry a lot, homeless often — it was almost like that George Orwell experience when he went Down and Out in Paris and London. These white ‘ex– pats’ who go to other countries: it’s almost like a word for a different class of person: people who have lots of money and just choose to live in another country because they can afford to. Artists like myself are always going to

“I still think of music as a matter of life and death.”

struggle financially, so moving to another country is extremely difficult. When I first came to Cork in 2001, I survived by busking. I feel so lucky that I always had music by my side to keep me alive and keep me going. I’m a little more comfortable now, but I still think of music as a matter of life and death. Trying to communicate with an audience is almost always like going up in front of a jury. You can never really get comfortable with that, no matter how good you are or where you’ve played. It took me a while before I became confident onstage. I was very nervous for years and years. Now, I see performance as an

emotional catharsis. Being onstage is the one opportunity where you can express all kinds of emotion and not hurt anybody. You can be violent in your music; you can be angry in your music and take all that raw emotion and turn it into an art form that people can appreciate. I think Europeans are unaware of how radical, how youthful, and how dangerous jazz was in the first half of the 20th century. They’ve gotten use to this poppy, corny American swing idiom. Before jazz became commercialised, it was really modern music. It was really interesting not just for your mind, but for your body as

well, when you were getting down on the dancefloor. I’d like to reclaim that music for what it was originally. I try to do that when I play Swing DJ sets, too – just appealing to your audience to dance. I’m DJing at a prohibition party as part of the Ballydehob Jazz Festival right after an 18–piece jazz orchestra, which is just going to be such a spectacle. I’ll be playing what I think are the best danceable tunes from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman’s Orchestra – that’s just a riotous tune. It genuinely nearly causes riots. It’s so awesome with Gene Krupa on the drums,

and just so exciting when you play it. Some music I find appealing only to my intellect, or only to my feet, or only to my spirit. It’s nice, but it leaves me wanting the other elements. I want all three together. If you’re feeling it, I’m pretty sure your audience will too. I try to look smart before a show. I’ve always been a fan of the fashion of the first half of the 20th century. I’ve just always dressed that way, even before I was a performer. Having a good dinner before gigs is always important. I love cooking. Big time. I love that I live literally three minutes away from the English

Market. It’s just such a jewel, sitting right in the beating heart of Cork City centre. It’s amazing. I love going there every day, getting fresh produce. There are all kinds of fantastic steaks and I really enjoy the seafood here in Ireland. I think a lot of Irish people don’t realise or appreciate how good Irish seafood is. I finally became an Irish citizen this year. It was such a feeling of relief that the State no longer had the power to deport me. And then also a feeling of acceptance from what always seemed like someone else’s country: I can now say proudly ‘this is my country, too.’”

Paws for thought Every week, Cork's animal shelters are called upon to take care of our city's injured, abandoned and unwanted animals. After veterinary treatment and plenty of TLC, these rescued cats and dogs are ready to start a new life with a loving owner. If you have the budget, time, space and commitment to welcome an animal into your home, adopting a rescue animal might be the right option for you. Meet this week's furry friends of The Cork News...

Talk to us We want to hear from you! Email your thoughts, comments, reactions and announcements to editor@thecorknews.ie

Make a difference Hello Lorcan, I took note last week of your front page article about a pastor in Cork, and his reasoning for voting ‘No’ in the upcoming referendum. This is my story and why I will be voting yes. I’ve been debating writing this for a while, because of what people might think. But the realisation came to me that “what people think” will affect my life, for better or worse and I should do my best to make sure that it’s changed for the better. Although you will be asked to vote simply on whether marriage can be extended to all loving couples, in reality, the public are being asked to ensure that gay people growing up in Ireland feel just as accepted as their straight brothers, sisters, cousins and friends.

Shadow

Shadow came into rescue and his story touched all our hearts. His owner, who had him since he was a little pup, passed away and now he’s looking for a new home. His foster family have only the best of things to say about him. He is loving, great with other dogs, enjoys his walks and is happiest with he is getting lots of hugs and attention. Shadow will need someone who is around for much of the time as he gets distressed if he is left alone for long periods. If you would like to meet Shadow please call or text 085 1251929.

Coming to terms with the fact that I was gay was by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do; the fear is hard to explain. When I was about 14 I began to realise that I was different. For the next 7 years, I didn’t breathe a word of my fear to a soul. I constantly checked everything I did or said in case it seemed “too gay”. It was the last thing I thought about every night and the first thing in the morning. I denied it and pushed it to the back of my mind, and continued on until somehow I built up courage at 21 and began to finally become comfortable in my own skin. With this referendum, you all have the power to make sure young people in Ireland won’t have to go through the fear and shame that so many of us battled with, that the

next generation can feel accepted by their peers and have the same hopes and aspirations as everyone else. It’s not my friends and family that I’m worried about; I know that I can rely on the support of 99% of them. It’s your mother, your father, your aunt, your uncle, your family and friends; the people who

would would vote ‘Yes’ but might not bother, because it simply won’t affect them. It’s those people that we need to ask to vote ‘Yes’; they will make the difference. Alan Barry, Microbiologist, Average man, Ballyphehane

SMEs must embrace e–commerce Small businesses have been told they must gear up for e-commerce and take opportunities for innovation in the digital economy. European Commission research suggests that companies which develop a meaningful online trading presence grow twice as fast, export twice as much, and employ twice as many people. Companies that have developed an e-commerce platform are also more successful in boosting sales in general, as well as generating more inbound customer queries. “The future is digital, and it’s time for indigenous companies to communicate with existing and potential customers online, through mobile and e-Commerce platforms, enabling them to trade online

and compete in the global digital marketplace,” said Dara Murphy TD, Minister of State for European Affairs and Data Protection 55% of SMEs that participated in the Trading Online Voucher Scheme launched

last July, available through the Local Enterprise Offices, have boosted their sales, with 60% also expecting to hire more staff within the next 12 months. Irish consumers spend roughly €6bn online annually,

however 60-70% of this online spend currently goes overseas. Fewer than 25% of indigenous firms sell online. The digital economy contributes 4.4% to Ireland’s GDP and is growing at 16% per year. It will be worth €21.1bn by 2020.

Glitches, meetings and traffic jams are business bugbears Delays and distractions are par for the course in a modern business, mirroring the intrusion of social media, speed–of–light communication and smartphones into our private lives. However, distractions from callers, tweeters, messagers and likers aren’t the primary cause of distractions or loss of productivity in Irish workplaces. In fact, almost the opposite is true: technological failures are now the number one cause of delays to normal operations in businesses in Cork and elsewhere. Cork–based workspace provider Regus carried out the survey among a broad sample of professionals, of whom 51% said that technical glitches are the biggest productivity killer in day–to–day operations. Meetings, the bane of many a professional’s life, come a close second,

listed by 47% of respondents as wastes of time. Travel and transport fill out the rest of the top five delaying factors in offices around Cork, with traffic jams (30%), delays to public transport (21%) and travelling to and from meetings (21%) also drawing the ire of Leeside professionals. Remote working, which eliminates those transport problems, is not without issues of its own: just 37% of workers say it’s easier to concentrate at home, though this figure rises to 70% when workers have a dedicated home office, suggesting that in some cases remote working may be living up to its much–touted ‘next big thing’ status from the last decade.

“At McCarthy’s, we won’t make a Drama out of your crisis, when it comes to a claim.”

Cork businesswomen going for growth Going for Growth, a support initiative designed specifically for female entrepreneurs, has selected 60 successful participants from hundreds of applicants, including two Cork businesswomen; Deirdre O’Flynn of O’Flynn Medical and Sarah Dineen of Uniwink (pictured). With a combined annual turnover of over €40 million in 2014, the network aims to significantly drive the growth of their businesses during the next six months. The Going for Growth programme, which receives funding from Enterprise Ireland, KPMG and the Equality for Women Measure, is based on peer support, where some of Ireland’s most successful businesswomen facilitate round table sessions.

Over 350 business women have already taken part in Going for Growth, including Cork’s Colette Twomey, Clonakilty Back Pudding; Ellie Redmond, Movie Junction Drive In Cinema; Christine Winning, Corporate Care Relocation and Grace Penning of Diamond Bridal.

New president for Cork Chamber KPMG’s Barrie O’Connell (pictured) has been elected as the new President of Cork Chamber. Mr O’Connell, Partner in Charge at KPMG, was elected at Cork Chamber’s 196th Annual General Meeting this week. Addressing his fellow Chamber members, he urged them to have faith in their power to represent the best interests of business in Cork for “a generation or more,” saying that the Chamber’s “collective representative business voice” will have “long term implications for the Cork region”. “Our goal,” he continued, “is to ensure the business view is apporpriately represented in making the optimum decisions for Cork.”

Also elected to the board of Cork Chamber at the AGM were Colm Leen, of Carbery Group; Orla Flynn of CIT; David White of Eli Lily; Bryan Hyland of Morgan McKinley; Cliona Murphy of Pepsico and Paula Cogan, of the River Lee Hotel.

Irish Cream Mousse E

very now and again even the most dedicated chef likes to do something which looks and tastes like it’s taken a lot of effort, but which is actually pretty simple to do. If you can beat eggs and melt chocolate (the secret is to do it slowly and make sure that no water gets anywhere near the chocolate itself ) then this is the dessert for you, with thanks to Chef Fred Pillavoine of Kilkenny Café @ Shanagarry Design Centre. Ingredients: Makes 4 • 200g milk chocolate • 1 tbsp instant coffee • 1 tbsp boiling water • 160 ml cream (whipped) • 2 tbsp Baileys Irish Cream • 2 eggs, separated • 2 tbsp caster sugar • Whipped cream and grated chocolate to serve

Method: 1. Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of boiling water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water. 2. Once the chocolate has melted, set it aside for a few minute to cool. 3. Dissolve the coffee with a tablespoon of boiling water and two tbsp of Baileys. Stir into the melted chocolate and add the egg yolks, then fold in the whipped cream. 4. Using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites in a separate bowl until soft peaks form. Add the sugar and keep beating until they’re glossy and firm. 5. Fold the beaten egg whites into the chocolate mixture. 6. Spoon into four glass tumblers and refrigerate for three to four hours until they’re set. 7. To serve, top with whipped cream and grated chocolate.

Cork’s first artisan gin and vodka distillery has launched spirits free from gluten, lactose and added sugar ahead of a predicated surge in demand in the market. St Patrick’s in Douglas has rekindled the artisan tradition of using Ireland’s staple crop, the potato, to produce their brand of potato spirits. Their grain–free process means the end products are completely gluten free, with less sugar. Brand manager of St Patrick’s Distillery Barry Fitzgerald stated: “A common misconception is that all of the gluten in grain is removed by distilling , and many people concerned about their diet now choose to completely avoid products made from wheat.” The distillery’s first spirit batch uses Lady Clare and Rosetta varieties which contain very low, stable reducing sugars.

Sugar – the bitter story of sweetness Research is consistently showing how diets high in sugar have a detrimental effect on our health. Nutritional Therapist and College of Naturopathic Medicine graduate Emma O’ Connor explains why the white stuff has become our sweet poison: When eaten, sugar gets broken down into glucose. This glucose enters the bloodstream and insulin gets released by the pancreas in response. Insulin’s job is to move the glucose to the cells to be used as fuel, and excess glucose gets stored as fat. This is why sugar is being labelled

as a “demon” in the obesity epidemic: the more sugar consumed, the more fat gets stored in the body. Obesity isn’t the only illness linked with a high–sugar diet. Polycystic ovary syndrome, fatty liver disease, high cholesterol, alzeihmers, cardiovascular disease and inflammatory illnesses such as arthritis have all been linked to sugar metabolism. A complete ban on all things sweet is not necessary when reducing sugar. Here are my four top tips: • Avoid added sugar: check the ingredients list on

packages to determine if sugar has been added to the product. If it’s listed in the top five ingredients it’s definitely a no–no! • Always eat protein or fat with carbohydrates. This slows down the release of glucose into the bloodstream. • Avoid artificial sweeteners added by manufacturers to replace the loss of sugar. They can still cause cravings. • As a replacement for adding sugar to food try stevia, xylitol or raw local honey — all in moderation!

Kids fight the battle of the bulge New research among some of the 60,000 school children, parents and teachers who are taking part in laya healthcare’s ‘Super Troopers’ initiative, Ireland’s first ‘health homework’ programme, shows that treating daily physical activity with the same importance as regular schoolwork has resulted in a sustained increase in daily activity levels, improved concentration levels in class and healthier eating habits. Following the success of the programme, there is growing support for schools,

such as Ballycotton’s Scoil Réalt na Mara, to adopt a ‘physical literacy’ homework programme as part of the national school curriculum with 94% of parents saying it’s a good idea, supported by 88% of teachers. The initiative is also seen as a major fight back against childhood obesity, which is becoming a big problem for primary school children here. Children and adolescents need to get 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day, ideally before, during and after school.

Dying to lose weight Following the death of a young women in the UK after an overdose of controversial slimming pills which she bought online, medical experts here have warned that ‘diet pills’ may seem like a quick and easy alternative to discipline and activity but can cause devastating consequences. Eloise Parry died earlier this month after taking eight pills which she bought online. They contained dinitrophenol, a stimulant which is classified here and in the UK as unfit for human consumption. Medical experts have said that just two of the pills could have constituted a lethal dose for the 21 year old. The Health Products Regulatory Agency has issued a warning to anyone who has bought slimming aids online — especially ‘fat burning’ stimulants — to avoid using them and if they feel any ill effects to contact their doctors immediately. Anyone who has information which could help ongoing investiga-

tions into the supply of illegal ‘medications’ can contact enforcement@hpra.ie or 01 634 3436. ‘Fat burning’ or stimulant ‘diet pills’ cause the metabolism to overheat and can lead to massive systemic failure, heart attacks and strokes. ‘Fat binding’ diet pills, also available online, can lead to GI disturbances among other unpleasant side effects, such as ‘leakage’. The best way to lose weight is to eat less, cut out processed foods and sugar, and exercise more.

• One in four teachers (27%) blame junk food, followed by too much time watching TV/playing video games (24%), lack of exercise (20%) and lack of education around childhood obesity (17%) as contributing factors to childhood obesity. • Parents blame junk food (37%) and lack of exercise (25%) for childhood obesity. • Almost one in five Mums and Dads are concerned about their child’s weight • 34% of parents don’t even know their child’s weight • 95% of teachers say that a child’s parents are responsible for combating obesity. • 94% of teachers say that a child’s weight can increase their risk of being a target of school bullying • 3% of parents believe that their child has been the victim of bullying due to their weight • 95% of parents don’t consider their child overweight, and nearly one in ten says their child has been on or has tried to go on a diet

Silence a way of life for Irish men Almost one third of men in Ireland would still rather bury their head in the sand than talk about sensitive health issues, whether physical or mental. Research published this month shows that nearly one in four Irish men are mroe comfortable discussing difficult financial matters than they are discussing health issues, even with their partners or spouses. In fact, only 45% of men who responded

to a survey oriented around the sensitive issue of testosterone deficiency said they regularly talk to their partners about anything health related, and one in five say they never discuss ‘personal’ health issues with anyone — even their doctors. Dr Pearse Phelan, a GP with a special interest in male sexual health, said the important thing to realise is that low testosterone “is a condition that many men experience”. “Loss of libido is the symptom most associated with TDS yet men often think it’s just a natural part of ageing. Signs and symptoms vary and can also include tiredness, mood swings, weight fluctuations, depression and erectile dysfunction,” said Dr Phelan. TDS can be confusing as symptoms are not all specific to low testosterone so an accurate diagnosis is essential. Visit whatistds.ie for more information.

Worrying alcohol trend for Irish women

A

lcohol-related health problems and deaths are increasing among Irish women as their patterns of drinking have changed dramatically during the past 20 years, an Action Alcohol Ireland conference was told this week. “The truth is that women are now starting to outpace men in terms of risky drinking. We need to jumpstart a public health dialogue on the meaning of low–risk drinking as soon as possible,” said alcohol policy advocate Ann Dowsett Johnston, a recovering alcoholic. “I am the poster girl for the modern alcoholic: well educated, high achieving and high functioning. I used alcohol to decompress in a high– octane life,” she continued. “Alcohol has become the modern women’s steroid, enabling her to do the heavy lifting in a complex world.” Teenage girls in Ireland have been drinking as much, if not more, than their male coun-

terparts since the mid 1990s and that the trend has continued as those former teenagers now start to hit their forties. The statistic is particularly worrying, as women’s body chemistry is even more susceptible to damage from alcohol — particularly long–term chronic abuse — than men’s. 20 years ago, very few wom-

en presented with cirrhosis in this country. Now, 40% of cirrhosis patients are female, and some women still in their thirties have livers so damaged that they will have serious health problems for the rest of their lives. 12% of breast cancer cases in Ireland have also been linked to alcohol abuse.

300 children at risk of suicide in 2014 - ISPCC This week, The ISPCC announced that over 300 children who called Childline were “at urgent risk of suicide” throughout 2014. The national child protection and welfare charity, which runs Childline, unveiled annual statistics which showed that over a thousand children contacted the organisation in relation to suicide. Over 300 had already acted on or

made plans to take their own lives. Last year the ISPCC announced that Childline was under threat due to funding pressures, but an emergency campaign generated over €1, 000, 000 in public and corporate donations. ISPCC Regional Manager, Catherine O’Donohoe highlighted Childline’s volunteers in Cork who answered a total of 52,046 calls for help in 2014.

CUH consultant hepatologist Dr Orla Crosbie warned that cheap alcohol is a major driving factor in damaging the health of young women, noting a UCC study which found that four times as many women are dissuaded from drinking to excess by financial concerns, rather than health concerns.

They’ve teamed up with The Cork News to offer practical advice for our readers. This week: making that change. With the evenings getting longer and the weather improving now is a good time to make positive and healthy lifestyle changes. Here are some tips to follow when you are planning to make a lifestyle change such as giving up cigarettes, getting fitter or losing weight. • Be specific about your lifestyle goal. • Accept that there are certain things you cannot change about yourself.

Stammering support in Cork Jamie Googan is a martial arts and fitness instructor, a full– time CIT student, chairperson of the CIT swimming club and a qualified personal trainer. Until recently, in spite of his achievements, he found it difficult to speak to anyone however, because of a chronic stammer. He couldn’t even say his own name, and had to ask friends and family to make phone calls on his behalf. On his first day at college, Jamie couldn’t even introduce himself to people. Just three years after joining the McGuire Programme, however, things have changed, though he says he wishes he’d known about it sooner. The programme is run by stam-

• Write down how you are going to achieve your goal step by step, including supports that you need. • Write down any obstacles that could stop you from achieving your goal and how you are going to overcome them. • Once you have your plan in place pick a day you are going to start. • It is normal for people to get a buzz around a new change, however we can all go back to old habits. If you do go back to your old ways just pick yourself back up and get going again. • If you are struggling seek professional guidance. • Just remember: you can do it! merers for stammerers and begins very intensively over four days, before progressing to a lifetime of help and support. Each county in Ireland has a McGuire support meeting every fortnight where members continually improve, as well as coaches who are just a phone call away. The programme changed Jamie’s life: now he says that the thing that gives him most joy is to be able to say his own name. There will be an open information night for people in Cork who feel as isolated as Jamie did by their stammers. It starts at 7pm on May 13th at the River Lee Hotel. he quest for younger looking, firmer, more radiant, linefree skin is a quest we have all undertaken and a road we gladly continue to travel. Going Places 24 April 2015

And if we go to Mexico… M aybe it is the green in our flags, or perhaps the laid back attitude we share, but the Irish and the Mexicans seem to have a bit of a love affair going. Mexico appeals to all sectors, but particularly honeymoon couples and of late Irish weddings are quite popular in Mexico. It could be to do with the wonderful weather or perhaps the powder–sand beaches or maybe even the turquoise waters, but I suspect it is a combination of these and much more. There is a great holiday feeling once you land, and everyone seems to be smiling, happy and in great form. You forget your jetlag almost immediately and join the party. While you can go there all year round the best time to travel to Cancún is December through to April, when the sunshine is at its highest and rainfall at its lowest. It is a friendly country and no visa is required for Irish passport holders, but be careful if you are including USA in your itinerary as there is paperwork involved there. While there are no compulsory vaccinations, the best advice on that front is to always consult with your GP. ‘All Inclusive’ is all the rage now and for good reason. You book and pay for your package before you leave home and you don’t have to worry about the cost of food and drink for the rest of your holiday. Considering that it can cost $15–$20 for a drink in some hotels you will be glad that you have taken the option! The food is very good in Mexico and while it does offer the traditional Mexican spicy food there is a strong American influence, so a lot of more

familiar dishes are available for the less adventurous. The Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Hotel is Cancún’s top accommodtion. It’s a five star adults–only exclusive hotel which can only be described as heaven on earth. All of the facilities you would expect, plus its world famous mind, body and soul experience will be a feature of your stay. The four–star–plus option would have to be Dreams Riviera Cancún Hotel, a firm favourite with Irish honeymooners, which is situated on a stretch of pure white natural beach in the Riviera Maya at

the southern tip of Cancún. If you’re a fan of scuba diving, the world’s second largest coral reef is just off shore. The good value option in Cancún is the three–star Riu Caribe Hotel, a part of the Spanish chain of Riu hotels. The Riu offers very good value for money and provides a great base to explore the nightlife of the resort. People often forget that you have one of the wonders of the world at your doorstep in Cancún with Chichen Itza. A UNESCO world heritage site and a major tourist spot in Mexico, it’s located about

120km away. The archaeological site is famous for its pyramids, temples and carved columns. A full–day tour from Cancún costs around €50.00 per person and is well worth the money and the effort. Getting to Cancún is usually via London Gatwick where there are direct flights three days a week with British Airways and Virgin. Other options include flying with US Air from Dublin to the US and on to Cancún. This option is useful if you plan other travel in the US such as Las Vegas or the east coast. A week off–season costs

from €1,049 including your flights, transfers and all–inclusive accommodation, and the high season version of this comes in at around €1,375. You will need to allow for travel insurance (don’t rely on your credit card). If you are planning to get married in Mexico then you need to make contact with the Department of Foreign Affairs and get a letter of freedom from the State. You then need to arrive in Mexico at least three days before the wedding and register with the local town hall. There you will need to have a compulsory

blood test, and they’ll issue your civil wedding papers from here too. but beware that they will all be in Spanish so you may need to get them translated. As with all complicated itineraries and arrangements it is best to contact an expert, someone who has knowledge of the place, the procedure and the protocol. Linda Cronin of Lee Travel has been arranging wedding and honeymoons for over ten years and has won several awards for her service. She can be contacted at 021 427 7111 or via email: linda@leetravel.ie.

It’s remained famously neutral throughout all sorts of trials and tribulations, thanks in no small part to its legacy as Europe’s safe– deposit box, and only slightly less famously it houses four distinct national characters

within its jagged borders. A short, but spectacular, train ride or drive through the mountains can bring you to German speaking (it’s Swiss German, mind you: your school or college Hochdeutsch will be of little use to you here!), French speaking, Italian speaking and Romansh speaking areas. They all have a lot going for them. One thing they all have in common though is the cool, calm, collected Swiss way of doing things. Everything runs on time. Everything is clean and well maintained. Every-

thing works. Everybody sticks joyfully to the rules. This may not sound like an ideal situation for a hedonist, but don’t knock it until you’ve seen it in action: Switzerland runs like the clockwork for which its horologists are rightly famous. To get the best of everything — history, culture, shopping, nightlife, mountains, lakes and more — it’s hard to beat Lucerne. Hugging the shore of the lake which shares its name, this ancient city has some of Europe’s most specatular architecture and scenery to of-

fer, from its fairytale buildings to its ancient wooden Kapellbrücke over the Reuss, to the towering mountains which surround it and the beautiful waters which wend their way through the valley. Take a boat tour if you can, or you’re really missing out. Skiing may be the go–to activity in the winter, but the summer is made for long walks, hilly hikes, late lunches, and chic shopping. One word of warning: Switzerland is not cheap, but if you’re ok with that, then a late spring or early summer sojurn is very highly recommended.

Be cool in Barcelona Barcelona has this week been voted ‘Europe’s Coolest City’ and is the most popular place on Irish tourists’ wish lists, with nearly 40% of us saying that the Catalan capital is our ideal destination. Barcelona easily beats off

competition from both London and Paris, outstripping them in popularity here by 22% and 24%, respectively. “Cool,” “alive” and “exciting” are the three adjectives travellers use to describe Barcelona when they’re leav-

ing, while Gaudi’s architecture, the city’s music and its legendary night– life top the list for what tourists say they’ll remember most from their visit to one of the jewels in the Mediterranean’s crown.

If you’re a lover of music and travel, then you owe it to yourself to make one of the world’s greatest opera pilgrimages and take the trip of a lifetime to Verona’s famous opera festival. This year will mark the 93rd festival and will run from the middle of June right through until the beginning of September, featuring legendary works liks Verdi’s Nabucco and Aida, Puccini’s epic Tosca, Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Mozart’s legendary Don Giovanni and many more. And it’s not just the music that will amaze you: patrons of the festival get to see these magnificent works of art in one of the world’s most re-

markable settings; Verona’s enormous 1st century Roman amphitheatre, which sits right at the heart of the modern city just as it sat at Verona’s core 2000 years ago. You can fly direct to Verona from Cork Airport all summer long on Topflight’s charter flight from 30th May onwards. Topflight are delighted to organise inclusive holidays for their guests to take in the best of the festival as part of a weekend break to Verona or a week’s holiday staying close by in one of the stunning resorts on Lake Garda from €599 per person sharing. For more information call Topflight on 01 2401 700 or visit topflight.ie.

Top Tips for the Verona Opera 1. Bring or rent a cushion if sitting on un-numbered stone step seating — this is vital! 2. Dress appropriately for the occasion 3. Also bring a warm coat and something waterproof — be prepared as it is open air and you are exposed to all the elements, including thunderstorms! 4. Wear comfortable shoes and don’t wear stilettos, it’s hard to walk on the cobbled streets of Verona in high heels

5. Due to the length of some operas — particularly Aida — plan your meals, and on peak dates a restaurant reservation in advance is vital 6. Bring a bottle of water to sustain yourself during the performance. 7. Be on time! Blackwater Bargains!

Volkswagen fans, dont forget: Blackwater M has a huge u otors sed sale all week car end

24 April 2015

Golf plays the long game Lorcan MacMuiris puts the newest VW Golf Estate through its paces and finds that big can be beautiful…

T

he Golf, in its 40–year history, has become one of the best selling cars in the world, ever. That’s not suprising. Early on, the Golf garnered a reputation for fun, reliability and back–to–basics motoring. Now, a little older and wiser, the latest generation of Golfs have sought to tread the line between maintaining that sense of fun as a ‘driver’s car’ while achieving

high grades in other things that matter to modern motorists: green credentials, safety, economy, connectivity and so on. This it manages, while still being the standard bearer for four decades of motoring heritage. Aesthetically, estate cars are hit and miss affairs. Often more miss than hit, it must be said. They can look as if a middle manager walked into a design meeting, clumsily sketched an ‘extra bit’ onto

the rear of a diagram and said “build that” to the engineers. Thankfully, for a car with looks as iconic as the Golf ’s, Volkswagen avoided that particular pitfall and the estate version is a good looking variant; its lines sweep back from the headlamps, a mix of curves and angles delineating the aerodynamic body until it wraps around the tailgate. The car’s 4.25 metres long and because of that looks less broad than it really is, but it

all works very well. So, how does it drive? Well, the 1.6 TDI isn’t the biggest, baddest kid on the block in terms of power, at 110 BHP, but what it’s got is handled very well indeed. The turbo doesn’t give a sudden kick, however at its most torquey delivers a great sensation of being pushed very insistently towards the speed limit. And in spite of its appreciable backside, this car loves the corners: it’s undeniably at its best when the sports suspension has a chance to show its worth. Its broad wheelbase glues you to the road and, with hardly any body roll at all, this very practical, very sensible car gives you a peek at its descent from the

hot hatches which made the Golf ’s name. I drove the Highline model, packed with more sensors and computers than all the space shuttles combined. Adaptive steering, adaptive cruise control, adaptive lights, adaptive pretty much everything all keep a close eye on your surroundings, especially handy when swinging its big booty into a tight parking space. The electronics play second fiddle, in the feeling secure stakes, to the Golf ’s innate solidity. It wears its five–star safety rating proudly, which does bring a small measure of compromise in over–the– shoulder visibility, which its very large, very strong pillars

block slightly, but that’s more than compensated for with Volkswagen’s eye–catching, swept–back mirrors. On the straight, too, the sports suspension and those broad tyres lead to a solid ride that may not be to everyone’s taste, but I love the fact that you feel more connected to the road, bumps and lumps and all. It’s an ideal motorway cruiser, and it’s an ideal back–road burner. In short, it’s every inch a Golf and a deserving member of the family. Spitting out just 99g of CO2 per kilometre, road tax is a pocket friendly €180 per year. See it at Blackwater Motors, starting from €23,030, or Newmarket Motors.

Newest Audi TT a spectacular head–turner

A

udi has extended the engine range for its new TT generation, meaning that from this summer Cork’s motorists will have the option to drive away — rather rapidly — in a 1.8 TFSI (turbo fuel stratified injection — in other words ‘punching way above its weight’) engine with 180 hp. An additional manifold injection system supplements the FSI direct injection, making this power–packed little rocket engine surprisingly easy on the environment too, while saving an awful lot of fuel. In fact, 100km will set you back a mere seven litres if you drive sensibly. What this all boils down to is that this six– speed roadster will get from 0-100kph in under seven seconds, and won’t stop until you hit 241kph — or get arrested, whichever happens first. We don’t advocate speeding. The new entry–level engine version of the Audi TT Coupé will be available from €45,615 and the TT Roadster from €47,815. You’ll have to wait until July, but be sure to call to Audi Cork at the Bandon Road Roundabout if you’re in the market for a real stunner.

Nemo/Cork players Paul Kerrigan and Barry O’Driscoll with young Nemo Rangers Hurling and Football Club members Michael and Clare McCarthy, proudly sponsored by Cork’s Johnson & Perrott. Picture by Billy McGill.

Johnson & Perrott teams with Nemo Two of Cork’s famous names have joined forces. Johnson & Perrott Douglas Road, in association with Opel, have signed a three–year partnership agreement with Nemo Rangers Hurling and Football Club. The alliance marks a new venture into the world of club sponsorship for the 205– year–old motor dealership,

whose Douglas Road base is just a stone’s throw from their near neighbours and new partners Nemo Rangers. Although it’s new ground for Johnson & Perrott, Opel has a long–established involvement with the GAA. As official car of the GAA/GPA and sponsors of the All-Stars awards, Opel are very actively proud supporters of GAA in Ireland.

Des McCarthy, Nemo Chairman, said “like Nemo, Johnson & Perrott have been around for a long time and have firm roots in the local community. Opel are no strangers to GAA and are true advocates of youth develpment in sport. We’re delighted to welcome them both on board as our official club sponsors.”

75,655 new vehicles have been sold in Ireland since the beginning of this year. The number includes all new vehicles registered in the State so far in 2015 and includes private cars, hackneys and taxis, as well as light and heavy commercial vehicles. The figure represents a very strong 32% increase over the first three months of 2014, when 57,268 new cars had been sold by the end of March. Meanwhile, there have been 303,750 used vehicles sold — including imports — representing an 11% increase over last year, when the equivalent figure was 273,034. 2015 started well and looks to be continuing strongly for the motor trade, even as the industry looks forward to the introduction of the 152 registration in a little over two months’ time.

Power and Glory

Hello, Mr Ambassador

Lorcan MacMuiris revels in the luxury and driving joy of the only L&K Octavia currently on the market in Ireland…

N

ot so very long ago at all, it seemed as if a bleak future for Skoda might have been a step up from the alternative: “no future at all”. The Czech manufacturer was moribund after a century of making, it has to be said, some damn fine cars. And many damn terrible ones. By the late eighties, they were still using designs, methods and materials which had been out of date since the 1960s, and upon realising The this they turned to Lada and Yugo for inspiration and guidance. Thanks, USSR. However, they turned out a few half decent–ish cars into the 1990s, enough to catch the eye of Volkswagen. The Germans snatched them up and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, Skoda is not only a force to be reckoned with in its own right, but produces some of the best cars coming out of Europe. Case in point, the special edition “L&K” Octavia, named for the men who founded the company in the 19th century. It’s an Octavia, Jim, but not as we know it. With a beefed–up, high performance two–litre diesel engine, tweaked and tuned to give a hefty kick, luxurious brown Alcantara leather trim, seats more intelligent than I am, L&K wood inserts, special alloy wheels, and a DSG gearbox — complete with “flappypaddles” — this 2014 beast is a far cry from the cars my friends and I made jokes about in the eighties, or the poor relation of the Volkswagen Golf of the early 2000s. This is a gorgeous, high tech, high spec powerhouse and I couldn’t wait to get it on the open road.

TV presenter Brian Ormond has been announced as brand ambassador for Kearys Renault Cork, Ireland’s leading dealership in Ireland for new and used Renault cars. The entertainer is driving the new Renault Megane GT line with 17” Dark Chrome alloy wheels. As well as looking good, Brian’s Mégane comes with the R-Link Multimedia and TomTom navigation system, ensuring he is always connected and never gets lost. To see the full range of new and used Renault cars available, call to Kearys Renault Cork at Kinsale Road Roundabout. Picture by: John Allen.

Drive

The whole car thrums with power. That burly engine, combined with its excellent suspension, grip, handling and internal layout give it a real feeling of cool, calm control hiding a behemoth. Driven in a civilised way, as most people will most of the time, it’s smooth and luxurious; quiet, responsive, incredibly comfortable. From the outside, only the big special–edition alloys give away its dual nature. But if you decide you’d like little 320 Nm punch in your back and a real feel for the road, then it can deliver in spades. This Octavia corners like a sportscar and pushes itself out of bends with an eagerness that puts a big grin on your face. For once, I’m enjoying flappypaddle driving and I’ve deliberately chosen a particularly bendy bit of road on the north Cork/Waterford border to put the L&K through its paces. The small wheel communicates the tarmac to your hands brilliantly, and as I eat up the miles between Youghal and Tallow on the way to Fermoy the sound system is being spared my usual blend of classical music and

used car review

documentaries. The sun is out, the road is clear, and I’m driving a car that’s at the half way point between a tank and a jet plane. Today is a Slipknot day: might as well put the Canton subwoofer to good use. Everything is acessible from the steering wheel, and I flick back and forth through albums. A big screen to my left keeps track of everything but I’m too busy loving the drive and gazing out over the Galtees and Knockmealdowns and the big valley between to bother looking at it, so I can’t really tell you too much about what it does. Wonderous things, probably, but I have a feeling that if you invest just under €34,000 on this beauty you won’t be looking at it too much either. There are just 3,800 miles on the clock of this 142 C stunner and internally it’s flawless. I had planned to go back down the M8 to Cork once I got to Fermoy, but this is just too much fun: back the way I came, I think, and then perhaps another few detours before I have to bring it back to Noel Deasy Motors. Give them a call on 021 439 5024 or visit noeldeasy.com and see for yourself why I’m grinning like a loon.

Drivers’ favourites revealed A ‘Drives of Ireland’ survey of Irish drivers has shown that the Wicklow Mountains (pictured) are the best destination for those of us who take pleasure in great drives along interesting roads. They are the

number one destination of 26% of motorists who love to drive for the sake of driving, with Killarney National Park and the Burren taking up the second and third slots. Unsurprisingly, given our

climate, we’re largely immune to weather conditions when it comes to heading out for a jaunt, with a majority saying that our changeable weather doesn’t deter them from hitting the road just for pleasure.

Rugby Rebels square off against Scots Clan Cork’s Sunday’s Well Rebels, the first mixed ability rugby side in Ireland, are set to take on Scottish counterparts The Clan in Cork this weekend. Established in January 2014, Sunday’s Well Rebels are a senior men’s team of over 30 players, roughly half of whom have a physical or learning disability. “Rugby is a game for all shapes and sizes and we recognise that. It’s about inclusiveness to support people who want to play the game,” said Alan Craughwell, player facilitator at the club. “The main thing is that this team is based on the assumption that anyone can suffer from disability at any stage of their life,” he told The Cork News. Mixed–ability rugby differs from the Paralympics and Special Olympics in that the disabilities of participants are not categorised. The sole difference between the sport and

full–rules rugby union is that scrums are uncontested. The Rebels are facing The Clan at Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa on Saturday, April 25th at 11pm, and they’re playing to win: “We’re the same as any other team,” says Craughwell. “Any team that comes out of Munster wants to win, be it in the PRO12, the European Challenge Cup, or any other competition. First and foremost, we want to be able to represent Sunday’s Well and Munster well.” The Rebels hope to encourage the formation of other mixed ability sides in Ireland, and are looking to take home gold in an international tournament. They are the only Irish representatives in the inaugural Mixed Ability Rugby World Cup, to be held in England in August 2015, and will face teams from Wales, England, Scotland, France, Italy, Romania, Belgium and Serbia.

Munster legend launches 5k challenge Former Munster player John Kelly has launched the Grant Thornton Corporate 5k Team Challenge. Taking place at The Mall on Tuesday, June 30th, the event aims to encourage social running in the business community, with both beginners and seasoned runners welcome.

Each run will be a team event, with the combined times of each team member determining the winner. “The event is a great opportunity to build team spirit and to create a sense of healthy competition. “I would like to invite all corporates in the Cork area

to enter and to enjoy a great evening of exercise and fun,” said John Kelly, former Munster wing and audit director of Grant Thornton Cork. Entry is €100. To enter your team of four, see grantthorntoncorporatechallenge.ie.

Reigning All-Ireland camogie champions Cork are to face Connacht powerhouses Galway as they clash the final of the Division 1 Irish Daily Star Camogie League, having overcome Limerick in a 1-12 to 0-10 for a decisive semi final win. Amy O’Connor goaled early on for the Cork side, and added a point soon after to help contribute to a 1-05 to 0-7 half-time lead over their Munster rivals. Cork didn’t manage to put the game beyond doubt until the closing stages, with Orla Cotter — who finished with six points — making a number of clutch scores. Cork and Galway’s camogie league final will throw in at 1.30pm at Semple Stadium in Thurles, County Tipperary, on Sunday May 3rd. Athletes warned about tooth decay danger

Brian O’Driscoll, out of this weekend’s league final due to injury

O’Driscoll criticises timing Cork wing-forward Colm O’Driscoll has criticised the scheduling of the Cork SFC following his brother Brian’s injury, which has ruled him out of Sunday’s Allianz Football League Division I Final. Half–back Brian, pictured, was injured while playing for Carbery against UCC on Tuesday, April 14th.

The match was the 21–year– old’s third elite–level game in six days: he had previously played in the senior footballers’ league semi–final win over Donegal, and the U21s’ Munster Final defeat of Tipperary. “They’d be talking about player burnout and this kind of stuff. A fella having to play

a championship match on a Tuesday after playing an important Allianz semi-final against a top side on the Sunday — I think it’s too much,” said Colm. Cork will take on Dublin in the final of the Allianz Football League Division I in Croke Park this Sunday, April 26th at 4pm.

The Cork president of the Irish Dental Association has warned sports enthusiasts to be aware of the hidden sugars which they may be consuming as part of a what they think is a healthy lifestyle. Dr Anne Twomey, who is a partner in Church Hill Dental Practice in Carrigaline, said many patients who participate in sports are presenting with significant tooth decay and erosion in their teeth. She outlined that while most athletes engaging in physical activities understand the importance of hydration and a healthy diet, many were not aware that a lot of so–called ‘sports drinks’ and protein shakes have a very high sugar content. “Clearly there are many benefits to adopting healthy lifestyles. However consumers have to be clear about what they and their children are consuming. Sports drinks,

protein shakes, energy drinks, energy bars and fruit juices can contain anything from five to a dozen teaspoons of sugar,“ stated Dr Twomey, adding that the IDA would be

making contact with the Irish Sports Council and its member bodies such as the FAI, GAA, and IRFU to see how the organisations can work together on this issue.

Call for competitors for women’s mini marathon Cork women have been called to take part in the inaugural Munster Ladies Mini Marathon on Sunday, May 3rd to help raise funds for Mercy University Hospital. The event is to be held over a seven kilometre course north east of Mallow, starting and finishing at the Mallow GAA Complex. Open to all standards of runners and walkers, each participant will receive a com-

memorative medal. “We’ll have children’s races, music, entertainment, games and much more, and we would like people to join us for what promises to be a fun packed day in north Cork, while supporting some very worthy causes,” said organiser Donie Shine, Dunhallow Athletic Club. Registration is €20 at munsterladiesminimarathon. com.

Play 24 April 2015

The answer is… Paul Brady is a force to be reckoned with; impossible to tie down to a single genre, a singer, songwriter and performer of renown. Ahead of a much–anticipated gig in Cork, Play’s Eoghan McNeill caught up with the enigmatic musician.

Nobody knows why some of us get broken hearts, and some of us find a world that’s clear and bright… No use in asking: the answer is ‘nobody knows,’” sang Paul Brady almost a quarter of a century ago on Nobody Knows. Now, on the release of his new live album The Vicar Street Sessions Volume 1, Paul seems sanguine about not knowing. “There’s a certain sadness to the song — the realisation that life isn’t all about total gratification. We all have our private little needs and wants, that are rarely accomplished. “Even if you make shitloads of money, that may not turn out to be what you want,” “I think I’m closer to knowing the reason we’re all in this world. You be yourself at all times, you do what’s right and what’s good, and let the rest of the world decide,” he says. Recorded over the course of a 23–night series of consecutive gigs in Dublin’s Vicar Street, the album is the first in a collection of releases commemorating the 2001 run. Featuring contributions from Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt and Ronan Keating, The Vicar Street Sessions makes for a ‘Last Waltz’–style celebration of Paul’s broad base of influences. He jokes that this base, spanning trad to soul to R&B and most genres in between, once proved problematic: “I always considered it a liability; a marketing man’s nightmare. It used to cause problems — a ‘how do we market Paul Brady’ kind of thing. Now I like the fact that people don’t know what’s coming next from me,” he says.

“Do what’s right and what’s good, and let the rest of the world decide.”

Having begun playing the country music dancehalls of Bundoran, County Donegal in the late 1960s, Paul pays tribute to his roots and country influences on Don’t Go Far, assisted by the song’s writer Curtis Stigers. With Paul taking a seat at the piano stool for the song, the performance is a stark homage to a facet of his musicality perhaps not always expressed explicitly: “Country music has been there in the background all the time, from my choice of tunes to the sound of my voice. I’ve always responded to country: Jim Reeves, Hank Williams, Charley Pride. I’ve always loved that,” says Paul. He welcomes the resurgence of Irish country and western music, and sees parallels between today’s Nathan Carter– led scene, and that which he entered into as young musician: “I love that whole showband era. It pisses me off to hear ‘rockstars’ dissing it. All

that music is so successful because it speaks to people, in a way that makes sense. People want that kind of immediacy,” he says. With more releases from The Vicar Street Sessions forthcoming, Paul says later volumes will include recordings hitting his traditional influences, with six of the 23 Vicar’s Street nights devoted to his tour of duty with Planxty. It was this trad side that led Bob Dylan to name Paul as one of six musicians — alongside other luminaries like Tom Waits, Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen — who “got it down” in the liner notes of his 1985 album Biograph. “I can’t really speak for what Dylan meant by that. I think he was tipping his cap to my trad side. I think he likes my trad side. He recorded Arthur McBride and Mary and the Soldier. He toured The Lakes of Pontchartrain, too,” he says. Dylan’s tribute went on to say that Paul was one of a small group of musicians not “witchdoctoring up the planet,” perhaps referencing lyrics to The Island, which had just been released: “The Island came at me, and through me, and I just tried to not distort that. It expresses the sense of powerlessness and ambivalence to how the northern situation has been treated. “I find it hard to talk about. It was difficult to write, and to let go of. I tried to give answers, but maybe just asked questions,” says Paul. He now speaks with pride of his Tyrone roots, and the ties to the area where he grew up. “That area of the North West: Donegal, Fermanagh and Derry — it’s a wonderful place to start. I feel very con-

Paul Brady, picture by Kate Horgan

nected to the area, to my relatives there, and to the sense of ‘dual history’ there. Things haven’t really changed that much there, and I like that,” he tells me. Reflecting on his career however, he says that his perspective has changed, with early doubts replaced with a sense of self confidence.

Though he was “going through a phase, wondering what to do next” during the recording of ‘the sessions’, with its release the singer finds he is more sure of both himself and his work: “I’m at a stage where I’m very, very relaxed about where I am, and what I’ve done. It’s a nice place where I’ve realised

that all my fears about my work, about whether I could be ‘marketed,’ were groundless,” he says. Paul Brady marks the release of The Vicar Street Sessions Volume 1 with a Cork Opera House gig this Saturday, April 25th. Tickets for the 8pm show are €29.50, €33.50 and €35.00 from tickets.com.

nia Love. “There’s a kind of g-funk element to it, but we’re putting our own spin on it,” said Paul, speaking to The Cork News. While he typically concentrates on jazz and improvisation, the Opera House show is allowing the bandleader to explore new possibilities:

“It will be particularly interesting to hear Mick Flannery’s songs with a big band angle to them, and I’m really looking forward to working with John Spillane and Cathal Coughlan, too,” he said. Tickets for the 8pm show are €25 and €30, from corkoperahouse.ie.
