Gardaí detail “appalling conditions” in Cork ‘Your workplace should not fill you with dread’ By Eoghan McNeill news@thecorknews.ie

Gardaí in Cork have derided their working environments as “horrendous, genuinely appalling…dangerous,” describing Garda stations infested with rats, buildings which are “fire traps,” staircases in danger of collapse and district HQs with inadequate sanitation facilities for female gardaí, explaining just why a Garda walkout threatened this week is no idle threat. Garda Michael Corcoran, a GRA executive committee member based at Anglesea Garda Station, has said that conditions in the Glanmire and Macroom stations are “downright dangerous.”

According to Garda Corcoran, Glanmire station is infested with rats, and is in such a state of disrepair that residents are unable to attend the station to interact with their local gardaí: “If a resident was to attend the station, there would be a genuine fear they would encounter a rat while making a statement. It’s that bad. The station simply isn’t fit for work under any health and safety standards,” he told The Cork News. Garda Corcoran continued that the 25 staff at the station have to “tread carefully” while climbing the three–storey building’s staircase as the timber structure is in danger of sudden collapse. The location of the station,

with the rear exit pushed against the back of a cliff, poses a threat in case of fire, he added. “There is no fire escape, so if a staff member is forced to use the rear exit in the case of fire, they would be in real danger of going off the side of a cliff. If the fire service were brought in to inspect the station, it would be closed down. Staff in the station are afraid of rats, of stairs collapsing from under from, and of being burned alive.” Macroom Garda Station is a district headquarters, and as such accommodates a superintendent and 40 Garda and civilian staff. continued on page 6

Smile Store – Your Local Dental Specialists answer huge demand for affordable dental implants

“I booked a flight to Eastern Europe and cancelled it when I talked to my friend who had gone to Smile Store” says Monica. “I had five dental implants and saved over €10,000 on Irish prices, and didn’t shell out for travel or accommodation or put myself at risk. I’m overjoyed, to be honest. I can’t recommend Smile Store highly enough. They are fantastic.” Monica

mile Store – Your Local Dental Specialists is the largest specialist practice in Munster, and they have a pretty full waiting room of patients eager to get their gorgeous new smiles. The long-established surgery is busier than ever with patients who have decided to invest in themselves without breaking the bank. Smile Store’s goal from the beginning was to bring affordable specialist dental care to Cork; now their large client base is a testament to their determination in maintaining low prices and unmatched customer care.

67% over local prices “We have seen a huge upsurge in patients booking in for dental implants, who tell us they are sick of missing teeth; uncomfortable dentures and a poor quality of life”, says Tamas Kirchknopf, Director at Smile

“We do our best to see everyone as soon as possible. We are now also offering late night and Saturday implant surgeries to cope with the demand.” Store. “They’ve heard that we provide the best of technology and techniques, while maintaining the personal touch for our patients.” “People research their options these days, and they are very knowledgeable and have a lot of questions for the team. We’re delighted to provide answers, as the best customer is an informed customer.” With a slew of information

available at their fingertips via the internet, discerning patients have been checking out the availability and pricing of dental implants in Ireland. “They have done their homework, and once they discover that we offer the lowest dental implant prices in Ireland at €749, alongside our track record of success with referrals from happy patients, they know they need look no fur-

We can offer people the kind of solutions no other practice can!” Dental implants, the titanium posts placed into the jaw to act as an artificial tooth root, have revolutionised dentistry as people with missing teeth or uncomfortable dentures can finally get teeth that look, feel and function just like natural teeth. Patients missing a tooth or two can get dental implants and have crowns or a bridge affixed atop the implant; and those who have been reliant on dentures can get implantsupported dentures, which are anchored firmly and don’t budge. This is life - changing for people who have grown tired of loose, uncomfortable dentures and the limited food choices associated with them. Dental implants allow people to eat whatever they like; biting into steaks; chewy bread and leafy salads with gusto. dar, has become known for his ability to tackle tough cases. Once a person loses a tooth, bone begins to recede form the area, leaving gums flat and a low volume of bone in the jaw. You need sufficient bone to hold an implant, and many patients have been turned away from other practices as their bone loss is too great. Most other dental practices cannot offer you dental implants at all, not even suggesting the option to their patients; and few can provide the kind of advanced specialist work that the Smile Store Specialists perform daily, at such reasonable fees. Smile Store are one of very few practices in Ireland with their own dental CT scanner that allows precision implant placement and customised bone augmentation. With a Master’s degree in Implantology, Dr. Kadar is one of the country’s leading experts in difficult implant placement, and he does love a challenge. He can augment your jaw with bone material, which fuses with your own bone and allows you to get dental implants. Once your dental implant has

been placed, it takes a short while to fuse with your jaw; then you can get natural-looking teeth fitted on top. It is all performed under local anaesthetic, the surgery is gentle and very nervous patients can opt for dental sedation if they wish. Look after your implants, and they will last a lifetime – all dental implants from Smile Store come with a lifetime warranty. Remember you can claim 20% tax back too! e are nearing the end of a long, tiring, contentious, occasionally nasty, certainly historic phase in the story of Ireland. This coming Friday, May 22nd, will see the culmination of months of campaigning and bickering and acrimony when we go to the polls to decide whether everyone shall be afforded the simple dignity of equality, or whether we shall remain an unfair, unjust, unequal society, beholden to old and outmoded ways of thinking. We will take to the ballot boxes and make our mark, one way or another, on those simple slips of paper and, perhaps, on the future of the country and what it means to call ourselves inclusive, open, liberal and loving. Next Friday, we the people shall vote to define what a simple word means in the eyes of the State. Not in the eyes of a church, or a congregation, or whatever god or gods you might believe in. Anyone who tells you that welcoming, with open arms, our gay brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, our gay friends, mothers and fathers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, butchers, bakers, candlestick makers — whomever — into the warm embrace of equality will degrade or diminish the sacrament of marriage is wrong. We can’t vote to impose our collective will on the tenets of any religion, just as we should insist that no religion can impose its will on us without our permission. What we can do is afford the freedom and dignity that most of us take for granted to each and every consenting, loving, beloved man and woman in the State. Here is why I will vote ‘yes’ to equality: as long as one of us, any of us, is unequal then we all are. Equality is not a matter of degree. It either is or it isn’t. As long as my gay friends can’t take that one simple step and declare themselves married, then none of us are equal under the law. That, to me, is unconscionable. It’s nobody’s business who loves whom, and it’s nobody’s place to insist that someone can somehow be lesser because of who they love. Love — true, shared, joyful love — is many things: it can be an inspiration, it can be the fount of all happiness and every blessing, it can be a burden. It can lift you towards the heavens, it can crush you, it can complete you or rend you, but it is not a matter of choice. Love just happens. Love just is. It’s the most natural thing in the world, and if someone tells you otherwise then they are wrong. It’s written in our genes and burned into our brains, and you can’t overcome it with mere words or strictures. The people who have declared themselves, sometimes very loudly and occasionally in truly vile terms, to be against the notion of two people in love getting married have given all sorts of reasons, ranging from the reasoned and misinformed to the ridiculous and malicious. The vast majority have been respectful, courteous and honest about their doubts and fears. I know some have even changed their minds over the course of the last few months. A few have thrown their weight around, rather disproportionately, in the media. Others have been shrill and hysterical, and some have expressed disgusting, bigoted, repugnant points of view, replete with lies and covered with the slimy sheen of ‘righteousness’ — or at least, righteousness as they see it. Let me state, once again, what the equality referendum is not about, in a last–ditch effort to clear up some of the misapprehensions: It is not about adoption. That is a completely separate matter under the law. It is not about surrogacy; that too is a completely separate matter under the law, nevermind that the vast majority of the few surrogacies in Ireland are between heterosexual couples. It is not about dismantling the ‘institution’ of marriage. If we as a nation vote to include everyone equally, it will not open the door to people marrying their children or their siblings, or their pets, or assorted inanimate objects, as some have bafflingly claimed. It will not cause the cloth of the temple to rip, it will not cause the sky to fall, it will not raise the oceans or lower the stock market. Your car will still start when you turn the key. There will be no mass redistribution of babies. The sun will still shine, the wind will still blow. The net result will be precisely this: slightly more couples will get married than is the case at the moment and enjoy the protection, security and legitimacy that marriage entails. Whatever your views, if you hold them sincerely and respectfully then you have every right to express them and to have them recognised. I’ve told you what I think, and what I’m going to do and I hope you’ll join me: On Friday 22nd, cast your ballot. Raise your voice. Be heard. But please, think before you do. Know the facts, and know exactly what you’re voting on. We might just have a chance to make history, and that’s not something to be done lightly. Equality is a precious and delicate thing. People have died for it. Nearly 100 years ago, a different generation made history in Ireland by declaring that the Republic they wished to create aspired to grant “equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens”, and would “pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all the children of the nation equally”. 99 years on, we’re a few days away from having the opportunity to live up to those lofty ideals at long last.

Flag comments ‘misinterpreted’ A Cork City councillor has defended comments he made questioning the appropriateness of City Hall flying the LGBT pride flag. Fianna Fáil councillor Terry Shannon this week called on Cork City chief executive Ann Doherty to remove the rainbow flag from City Hall. Speaking to The Cork News, Cllr Shannon said that “on reflection,” he now agrees with the flying of the flag: “I think that my comments have been misinterpreted. I’m voting ‘Yes,’ and I support the ‘Yes’ campaign. “However, I have constituents on both sides of the argument, and believe all points of view should be respected in the heat of a referendum. “The people saying it’s grand are ‘Yes’ voters. What would these voters say if a ‘Vote No’ banner was flown from City Hall?” he said. Cllr Shannon’s comments were condemned by fellow councillor Mick Barry: “This is nonsense talk from Cllr Shannon. The flag doesn’t say ‘Vote Yes.’ It’s a symbol of resistance to injustice and oppression.

“I think that my comments have been misinterpreted: I’m voting ‘Yes’”

“It’s symbolises the struggle of the gay community against generations of oppression and second class citizenship. “What possible objection can he have to flying a flag that represents the fight against injustice?” the AntiAusterity Alliance councillor told The Cork News.

Hook uncorked Ireland is on track to be one of the most obese nations on the planet in just a few short years, but George Hook reminds us that there's still time to change our habits before we become a nation of huffing, puffing fatties.

T

here is a sugar meteorite heading to Ireland with the capacity to cripple the population and bankrupt the country. Last week’s prediction by the World Health Organisation that Ireland will have an obesity epidemic on its hands within 15 years was a shocking and disturbing read. The report puts Ireland on course to become the fattest country in Europe in just over a decade. On current trends, the report suggests that almost 90 percent of Irish adults will be overweight or obese by 2030 — a considerable rise from 74 percent in 2010. Further still, the Irish Medical Organisation President Dr Ray Walley says that this is “the starkest health warning of an impending health crisis for Ireland that (I have) seen in 30 years of medicine”. The good news is that there is time to do something about it. Obesity is not something we are born with. It’s not a condition inflicted on mankind for which is there is no known cure. The route out of obesity is within our own control, but it involves making the right choices for our bodies and ignoring the easy options when it comes to food and drink. Being overweight is a lifestyle choice. I’m fed up to the back teeth listening to people play the victim card when it comes to issues of diet and weight. Obesity is not a glandular problem. Nobody with big bones comes laden with excessive fat to prop them up. Weight does not pile on the human frame of its own accord. We all make choices in the food we consume. If we make good, healthy choices, we won’t get fat. If we make bad decisions, chances are we will become overweight. Regular exercise and a healthy diet doesn’t

george@thecorknews.ie weight increases the chances of heart disease, cancer and all sorts of other problems. If the entire country was walking around out of breath, red faced and struggling under their weight, it’s safe to assume that our already overburdened hospitals would be incapable of coping. Health insurance premiums would go through the roof and Ireland would drown in a sea of blubber. Pretty picture, don’t you think? Well the good news is that there are solutions out there and there are people willing to help. The biggest misconception about healthy eating is that it costs a lot of money. I’ve heard all the arguments about the convenience of fast food and the cheap alternatives to healthy choices that are meant to save money. Rubbish. Eating healthily does not cost a lot of money, but it does require educating one’s self about the choices and options that are out there. It also involves taking the time to prepare and cook food properly and resisting the urge to pick up the phone and ring the local take away for dinner. I understand that Ireland has changed

“Nobody with big bones comes laden with excessive fat to prop them up.”

lead to obesity. Stuffing your face with processed, fatty foods does. It’s that simple. Really, it is. I have been cribbing about this issue for a long time but these latest findings are proof enough that obesity is now a huge problem for Ireland. The consequences of doing nothing are set out in this report and the very notion that Ireland could have an adult population where 90 percent are overweight is beyond contemplation. The consequences of such are almost unthinkable. Certainly the health repercussions would be catastrophic and it is difficult to imagine how the health services could cope. We all know that being over-

from when I was growing up. I am aware of the time constraints on families where both parents are working full–time jobs. But if I told you that your children’s long term health is suffering because of it, wouldn’t you want to do something about it? Wouldn’t you put measures in place to slow the descent into obesity? Just like a muscle needs to grow and develop, so too the human taste bud needs stimulation to help it prosper. Sugar, salt and artificial e–numbers are dominating most of our diets, and the damage we are doing to our bodies as a result is frightening. Cooking nutritious meals takes effort, but if people were willing to put a bit of time and effort into planning their week in a food diary, the benefits would be enormous and a whole lot more satisfying. Eating a balanced diet makes you feel better. Cramming the body full of processed junk slows it down. Why not pick up a copy of our very own Derval O’Rourke’s cook book and give it a try? It is full of good advice for eating well and every recipe is delicious and nutritious. Equally, The Happy Pear Cook Book offers some wonderful vegetarian options that are easy to make and with very affordable ingredients. Their website thehappypear.ie is also extremely helpful for anyone looking to make a change to their diet. Ireland’s relationship with bad food is spiralling out of control, but the problem is fixable. It takes effort and a bit of planning, but the benefits of changing our thinking about food far outweigh the problems that are waiting for us if we don’t. Your health is your wealth, right? Let’s start acting like it. We don’t have time to waste. In a few years, it might already be too late.

Superfast broadband comes to Cork

M20 postponed The Minister for Transport’s decision to postpone work on the Cork to Limerick motorway has been condemned as “unacceptable” by the Cork Chamber of Commerce. The roadway between Cork and Limerick is currently the only inter–city corridor in Ireland not developed to motorway standards. Minister for Transport Pascal Donohoe this week announced that the proposed M20 motorway will not be progressing to planning stage. “It is absolutely unacceptable

that a project of this significance has been pushed to the back of the queue. “Having it postponed really signals a lack of interest and intention on the government’s part for this key project.,” Conor Healy, Cork Chamber, told The Cork News. Cork East TD Seán Sherlock cited the project’s estimated cost of €1 billion as the reason the latest delay: “There just is not enough money to progress the project at present because of a price tag of more than €1 billion.

“It certainly was being given consideration, but the price tag at his juncture is just too high,” he said. Mr Healy however insisted that the project needs to progress to planning stage, work that could be carried out a “reasonable cost”: “We recognise that significant funding is required to deliver the process, but the planning process needs to begin. As funding becomes available, the project can then move to construction,” he concluded.

Cork is to lead the way in the rollout of super–fast broadband which will see parts of the county able to avail of download speeds of between 200 and 1000 Mbps within the next few years. Carrigaline is to be included in the first phase of a new broadband network, which is set to create 260 jobs nationwide. The satellite town is one of 10 hailed as Ireland’s first gigabit towns — or “fibrehoods”, as they’re being called — alongside Cavan, Dundalk, Westport, Castlebar, Sligo, Tralee, Navan, Letterkenny and Wexford. Of the new jobs, 60 will be created through SIRO, the joint venture fibre–broadband company involving ESB and Vodafone Ireland, while there will also be 200 additional construction jobs preparing infrastructure during the roll-out. SIRO is investing €450m in building Ireland’s first 100% fibre–to–the–building broadband network, offering gigabit speeds to 500,000 premises in 50 regional towns. Construc-

Fine Gael TD for Cork South Central, Jerry Buttimer hailed the news as ”great for businesses and families in Carrigaline”: “Recently Minister for Communications, Alex White, confirmed to me that as part of the Government’s National Broadband plan, high speed broad would be rolled out in Carrigaline by 2016,” he said. “Now that this new commercial service will also be extended to Carrigaline it will ensure that the area has one of the best broadband services in the country.”

For more than 200 years the Munster Agricultural Society has showcased the equipment, animals, sports and recreation associated with agriculture to the people of Munster at the Cork Summer Show. This year, Ireland’s longest running agri–show will showcase the evolution of our agricultural heritage with an incredible line up of entertainment for all ages on June 20th and 21st at the Showgrounds in Curraheen, Cork. Bem–vindo, Thiago Fota Wildlife Park has ended a 13–day search for a name for their Brazilian Tapir calf. Last week’s edition of The Cork News brought you the tale of a tiny tapir in need of a name so he could join the likes of Fada the Giraffe and Shay Gibbon in proudly bearing an appelation bestowed by the public. So, along with everyone else in Cork, we’d like to welcome Thiago officially to the world. Thiago, a very distinctly Brazilian name, was chosen by lead warden Aidan Rafferty and his fellow wardens from a shortlist of 15 taken from over 400 suggestions which were made via the park’s website. “We loved the sound of the name,” said Aidan, “but more importantly its origins are from Brazil and it’s nice to take that into consideration”. Some of the most popular names suggested for the tubby little tapir included Rio, Ronaldo, Senna and Ted. Thiago, who is now five weeks old, is the first calf of parents Maya and Bazil and

the first Brazilian tapir to be born in Fota since 2006. The winning name was suggested by Aisling O’Meara from Dublin who will now get to go on a behind–the–scenes tour of Fota, where she will have a chance to see little Thiago in person.

Cork in top ten for odds of ‘No’ equality vote Odds this week released by Paddy Power put two Cork constituencies among the most likely in the nation to a return a ‘No’ vote in the marriage equality referendum. Cork North West, at 8/1 is considered third most–likely to vote ‘No’, while Cork South West at 14/1 sits in sixth place.

Although both constituencies have tended to vote conservatively on past referenda, Yes Equality Cork’s campaign director has said he thinks a ‘No’ from either is far from certain: “While these constituencies may have been conservative on social issues in the past, I don’t think they’re a

good bet to return a ‘No.’ “Cork North West may have been more conservative before the addition of Ballincollig to the constituency. That’s changed the dynamic. “The national Yes Equality bus tour came to Clonakilty and was very positively received. Skibbereen and Ballydehob have shown strong

support for a ‘Yes,’ too,” Ken Curtin told The Cork News. Cork South West Fine Gael TD Noel Harrington has been canvassing for a ‘Yes’ in his constituency, and says the odds are “no great surprise”: “Both constituencies have always been traditionally conservative.

“With marriage equality however, younger people seem particularly enthusiastic about voting ‘Yes.’ “It’s really a matter of energising young voters to get out and vote in strong numbers,” he told The Cork News. Deputy Harrington’s Fine Gael colleague Michael

Creed said that a ‘No’ vote in North West shouldn’t be considered certain: “I consistently campaign for myself, and would gauge opinion on other issues when doing so. “Opinion hasn’t been as clear cut as it may have been in the past,” he told The Cork News.

Shocking development A Cork organisation is demanding an end to electroshock therapy in Ireland, which can currently be given against patients’ wishes. Electro–convulsive therapy (ECT) involves passing an electric current through patients’ brains, inducing a seizure or convulsion. Opponents of the therapy claim it causes amnesia and brain damage, and are calling for an end to the practice. Under the Mental Health Act 2001, the therapy can be administered in cases where patients are “unable or unwilling to give consent.” Cork–based Mind Freedom Ireland (MFI), a support group for people with experience of ECT, are holding a protest against the continuing use of ECT on Grand Parade on Saturday, May 16th. “It’s used as a matter of desperation, when psychiatrists say that patients are ‘resistant’

She was given the therapy three days after giving birth, and she still has no recollection of the birth, or even being in hospital,” Jim Maddock, MFI, told The Cork News. Mind Freedom Ireland was established in 2003, and their 2pm Saturday protest is their seventh demonstration against ECT. The group hold weekly meetings helping those affected by ECT. ‘Poverty is rife despite the prosperity we see’ Cork emergency shelter filled to capacity By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

A Cork residential shelter is facing unrelenting requests for emergency accommodation for homeless women and children, prompting desperate calls for an increase in the rent supplement cap. Last year 252 women had to be turned away from Cork’s Good Shepherd Services’ residential centre, Edel House, because beds were unavailable. In total, 284 women and 82 children were admitted to the emergency accommodation. Good Shepherd Services chief executive Tony O’Riordan stated that the shelter — which has been operational for 43 years — is catering more and more for the “new homeless”, particularly women and children from low–income households who are being pushed out of the rental market.

Tony O’Riordan, CEO Good Shepherd Services, outside Edel House.

“We typically have 20 kids here every week and 10 mothers.”

“There has been no increase of the rent supplement cap and people simply can’t afford to keep their property,” he said. “Some of the women coming to us were in rental accommodation and were not meant to be paying more than the rent allowance, but were supplementing it from their social welfare. In the end, they couldn’t make ends meet and lost their home.

Reasons for admission to Edel House in 2014 No fixed abode — 120 Family conflict — 44 Evicted — 34 Domestic violence — 28 Discharge from hospital — 15 Stranded — 3

“Poverty is rife despite the prosperity we see, and poverty does terrible things to people, in terms of them not being able to achieve some sort of life, and ending up losing their home.” Mr O’Riordan added: “The economy has picked up, professionals have got jobs, and accommodation, but the housing stock has stayed the same while the numbers renting have increased greatly. With the development of the Capitol Cinema and the convention centre at the old Beamish and Crawford brewery, it’ll bring more workers into the city, who will also be looking for accommodation. There’s no way of it getting better first — I see it definitely getting worse.” Currently, Good Shepherd Services has 18 single beds and 10 family rooms for people in need of emergency accommodation, all full to capacity. Mr O’Riordan stated that “any given week, there are eight families” who cannot be accommodated due to

Relationship breakdown — 15 Harassment — 1 Prison release — 11 Overcrowding — 5 Other - 8

space restrictions. “We typically have 20 kids here every week and 10 mothers,” explained Mr O’Riordan. “The crisis is so great, and last year and so far this year we are virtually full all the time. “We always encourage mothers to try and keep life as normal as possible, and keep a routine going. We also encourage them back to independent living, and most people leave after three months — less than 10% will stay longer. We work very hard to ensure this, first of all making sure women know their entitlements, such as social welfare, rental allowance, medical cards, and then we help them find properties. No one should be in emergency shelter any longer than necessary.” Good Shepherd Services works with women on three levels: prevention to stop them losing their home; emergency accommodation along with education and training; and the transition to independent living.

‘I needed help’ Claire* is a separated woman with two adult children. This is her story about her interaction with Good Shepherd Services.

I entered the service with my mother as a young child, so I’ve always been aware of Edel House. I was 10 years in a dysfunctional relationship, and I turned to addiction — to drugs — during that time as I found it difficult to cope. Things went from bad to worse, and I went into another relationship, with more abuse. I really needed the

Good Shepherd Services. I needed help. My last admission to Edel House was at Christmas three years ago and I stayed for four months before moving into an independent living situation. I linked in with an aftercare worker for first few months but now I just link in with aftercare social groups and nights out. I was also put in touch with a fantastic drugs counsellor, Teresa, and completed

a computer course, run by staff from Bruach, which has helped me with the college course that I’m attending now. I’m also now living independently. The Good Shepherd Services has meant everything to me. My life has changed so much in the past four years, it’s really the start of a new journey.” * Not her real name

H

ello. I am a levelheaded Swedish person living in Cork for two years. We have a little boy, Sven, who was born here. He seems outrageously confident and full of himself. What can I do?

Lars Larsson, Stockholm.

Y

ou can thank your lucky stars you live in city that knows how to take people down a peg or two (you langer). Cork has long suffered from people with delusions of grandeur. We even have our own name for the condition; it’s called Bishopstown. The city fathers recently constructed a huge concrete platform by the entrance to Fitzgerald’s Park, just to deal with the problem. All you have to do is put Sven on top of it, and then shout “would you ever get off the stage, boy.” (You’ll need to arrive early at the weekend, it gets fierce busy.) If that fails, he has a condition known as ‘Thinking He is It’. The only known cure is to move to Waterford. At least then he actually will be better than everybody.

H

ello old stock. I’m taking the ferry for my holidays this year because what is the point in buying a brand new Range Rover if you can’t use it to ram your wealth down people’s throats all over Europe? Anyway, as you can imagine, I’m terrified of running into norries on the boat to France. Do you have any advice for me?

Jeremy, outlandish new gaff on the Model Farm Road.

I Email your dilemmas in confidence to drmagoo@thecorknews.ie

would stop calling people old stock, Jeremy. It’s a bit 1978. I appreciate your problem though. My sister was stuck next to her plumber on a flight to New York last year. The only thing she had ever said to him before was “do you mind coming around the back way, in case the neighbours see you.” (You wouldn’t want that to get taken up the wrong way, says you.) She drank half a bottle of gin to settle her nerves and ended up getting off with him. Daddy took her out of the will.

“You can thank your lucky stars you live in city that knows how to take people down a peg or two (you langer).”

I

have bought my godson a birthday and Christmas present every year since he was born. He’s making his confirmation this year and he asked my sister to stand for him! What is the worst thing I could give him as a present to show that I’m deva over the whole thing? Mairead, Rochestown Road.

G

et him a DVD called Jesus Is Your Friend. (If there isn’t a DVD out there called Jesus Is Your Friend, then I’m the Lord Mayor of Killorglin.) The last thing he needs on his confirmation day is anything to do with religion. And the ungrateful little tyke can’t use it to buy an Xbox. Who’s deva now? You can always give him a small bit of cash. Don’t worry, nobody expects to get much from your area of town. The people in Rochestown Road didn’t get where they are today by random acts of kindness or generosity. As ye say out there, leave that to the Norries.

C

A

llo, ‘Allo. My wife and I are ardent swingers, who are planning a visit to Cork next weekend. What areas are best to find the swingers? We are open to all sorts of people.

Frisky Francois, Lyons.

I

’ve been to a couple of swingers parties around Cork. Let’s just say it’s a good thing you’re not fussy. The golden rule at Cork swingers parties is always wear two blindfolds in case one falls off. I wrecked the mood at one shindig when my blindfold slipped and I shouted “you can get those burned off by laser now you know” at a solicitor from St Luke’s. He still can’t look me in the face when we meet around town. The feeling is mutual. Anyway, your question. Look, I don’t want to be casting aspersions about any old area of Cork. But then as they always say up there, Maryborough Hill isn’t just any old area. Nudge, nudge, you know yourself.

’mere girl, what’s the story with the end of Barrack Street? I went in to the Yangtze River for a bag of chips, except it’s a Japanese place now serving seaweed. I said to the girl if I wanted that I could have gone to Fountainstown. She hadn’t a clue what I was talking about. Anyway, is there anything we can do to get the old Barrack Street back? Dowcha Donie, Togher.

I

’ve good news for you, Dowcha Donie. There is a support group for now–devastated Yangtze regulars, they meet every Tuesday night. You should pop along this week, they have a guest speaker on the topic ‘Life After Prawn Crackers.’ As to your question about getting the old Barrack Street back: You’re obviously looking for a rundown narrow street, with a few bereft locals lying in pools of their own vomit. Have you considered visiting Youghal? Alternatively, I hear Cobh is very handy now with the train.

INMO to ballot nurses on LRC proposals Nurses at Cork University Hospital’s Oncology Unit are to be balloted on whether to accept Labour Relations Commission (LRC) proposals, seen as the “first step on the long road of recovery post moratorium”. Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) members from the hospital’s oncology unit engaged in talks with management of CUH, chaired by the LRC, this week, ahead of a ballot on propsals which include increased nurse cover at night, increased clinical management presence, concrete plans to relocate the unit within CUH, an immedi-

ate nurse staffing review and education and training opportunities. INMO members were to engage in industrial action last Tuesday, May 12th, however, this was deferred until after the LRC talks. INMO industrial relations officer Patsy Doyle said: “Our immediate task is to allow our members time to vote on the proposals over the coming days. The union is satisfied to recommend acceptance of the proposals as a first step on the long road of recovery post moratorium at CUH. We acknowledge the important role that the LRC has played in this process.”

An Taisce presented the Neat Streets Awards to 22 schools who reduced student littering, reduced waste and increased recycling levels over the academic year. “We were delighted with the response of schools to the Neat Streets programme this year. It’s very encouraging to see so many schools complete the programme successfully,” said Anthony Purcell of An Taisce.

Boundary change implementation ‘critical’

Pat Casey’s family and friends presenting a charity cheque for almost €4,000 raised in his name

Thousands raised in Pat’s memory A fund-raising cycle in memory of a Crosshaven father who passed away from a relatively unknown incurable lung disease has raised €3,800 for two organisations. Pat Casey, who died in December 2013 at the Mater Hospital, Dublin, after being diagnosed just four years earlier with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), had raised thousands

of euro to fund research and raise awareness of the condition through two charity cycles. Last September, Pat’s wife Anne decided to continue her late husband’s work, and organised a charity cycle in his memory, along with her husband’s friend, Brian Aherne. In association with the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association

(ILFA) and Cork University Hospital (CUH), the two–day cycle covered almost 150km from Cork to Limerick via Tipperary, and returned the next day on the 100km from Limerick to Cork. A cheque was presented to CUH consultant respiratory physician Dr Michael Henry in a small ceremony in the Viaduct Bar.

The chair of the Cork Local Government Review Committee (CLGRC) has downplayed tensions between City Council and County Council officials ahead of planned changes to the local authorities. The committee was established to determine whether Cork’s city and county councils should merge, or whether Cork City Council’s jurisdiction should expand. Tensions emerged this week when Cork City Council officials accused their county counterparts of a €5 million accounting error, which they claim hindered their dealings with the review committee. “You’ll always have these little tensions: they serve no purpose, and citizens have no interest in them,” Alf Smiddy, chair CLGRC told The Cork News. It is understood that while county officials favour a merger between the two authorities, Cork City Council hopes to see their jurisdiction expand. Mr Smiddy however insisted

that the review committee’s final decision, expected in September, will benefit the Cork region either way: “Everybody has different perspectives. We’ve received over 100 submissions from key stakeholders, including both the city and county authorities. “The commonality to all

these submissions is the widespread call to create a wider Cork metropolitan area. “The most important thing with any decision is the implementation and the execution. I’ve been involved with company mergers and takeovers, and in my experience, execution and implementation is what’s critical,” he said.

Daytripper Anna Geary (27) is a four–time camogie All Star and All Ireland champion, and the current Cork Rose. She recently announced her retirement from inter–county competition to embark on a career change.

Interview by Eoghan McNeill Picture by Brendan Moran/Sportsfile

I

f I’m doing a gym session, I’ll be up at about 6.15am. The burst of energy you get from a gym session far outweighs an extra half hour in bed. I wouldn’t have a big breakfast. I’d grab a piece of fruit so I’m not working out on an empty stomach, and then afterwards I’d have something like porridge with blueberries and honey. I eat small and regular amounts because as a sportsperson, you’re conscious of keeping your sugar levels up. I read that Joe Brolly thinks that inter–county players are ‘slaves.’ I don’t necessarily agree with that because it’s a choice that you make, and it all depends on the individual. If you’re doing any extra activities outside your work, it takes a lot of planning. It wasn’t necessarily unmanageable for me. It’s just that my career is changing direction now, and that’s when you really have to focus. In the last twelve months I was working full time, playing senior club camogie, and going to college, I was captain of the Cork camgoie team and I was the Cork Rose. Anyone who thinks that Rose of Tralee has no place in society: I would love to hear their explanation. It’s about being proud of our Irish heritage, and coming together and honouring ambitious, creative, outgoing women. I would challenge anybody of that opinion to go down to Tralee and view it as a spectacle, and see the number of people that go there and hold it so close to their hearts. I was very fortunate to stand beside strong, independent, modern, women on the Rose of Tralee stage in August. I think there’s a bit of feminism in everybody. It’s not about comparing yourself to men and saying you’re better or worse: it’s about expecting

“Barriers are definitely being broken down as far as women’s sport goes.”

more. It’s about looking at the status quo, and looking at where we are, and seeing how we can get from A to B. Wanting Irish women to do better and be recognised for achievements is something that I think anyone, including men, should want. Every man in this country has a mother or a sister or a daughter. They might have female cousins or friends. They should want better for them. It’s not about getting more than you deserve, it’s about reaching a place where kids growing up understand that regardless of whether you’re a man or a woman, you can get equal treatment. Barriers are definitely being broken down as far as wom-

en’s sport goes. Look at Stephanie Roche, Katie Taylor, the Irish women’s rugby team, and the Cork Ladies footballers. When we won the All Ireland we were on the front of The Irish Times, which is a huge thing. Players need to expect more. Sometimes women have a tendency to just ‘get on with it,’ and learn to accept things. There’s a responsibility on players to not be afraid to tell their stories — to show the person behind the player. More and more, the media is giving the opportunity for the public to see players’ personalities and how they train and how much they’ve achieved. The standard of women’s sport is continuing to improve.

The women playing these games have got increased confidence, and with that confidence comes that ‘flair’ — that freedom of expression. The age–old question is how much part a woman’s looks play in her success or media coverage. Stephanie Roche wouldn’t have got that Irish Independent cover shoot had she not been as talented, and as successful at what she does. Yes, she was dressed up, and some may have deemed she was ‘scantily clad’, but that’s a matter of opinion. She’s had phenomenal achievements this year, and whether or not she chose to do that photo shoot is irrelevant because she was getting the coverage because of who she is as a player.

People might say ‘Oh, she wouldn’t have got that cover if she wasn’t good looking,’ but we need to understand that the coverage is there. The coverage is given to players based on talent and skill level. After that, it’s a bonus if they look great in a picture. They are role models because of what they do on the field. I’m kept busy in the evenings: I might have training, I might have an event, I might have college or study. A lot of the time I’ll bring my dinner to work with me: it might be a chicken stir fry or something like that; maybe some homemade spaghetti Bolognese. Something along those lines, that will fill me up. You don’t want to find yourself in the

situation where you’re coming home at 9pm and you’re starving. I love when I get the opportunity to watch television. I’m in the middle of the Friends boxset now. I got it as gift for Christmas, and I just love it so much. Joey is probably my favourite character. The beauty of Friends is that no matter how many times you’ve watched it, you’ll always find something to laugh at. I’m definitely a night owl. In an ideal world, I’m in bed, lights off for 11pm. My mam’s words always come back to me: ‘An hour before midnight is worth two after,’ so I do try to stick to that if I can. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always happen.

McNulty Boylan and Partners and Mullins Lynch Byrne have merged to create BDM Boylan, making it one of the largest legal firms in Munster. The BDM Boylan team of solicitors (left to right) includes David Browne, Partner; Lorna Helen, Solicitor; Georgina O’Halloran, Solicitor; Juliette Lynch, Partner; Joan Byrne, Partner; Shirley Fogarty, Partner; Niall Daly, Partner; Pat Mullins, Partner; Aisling Fitzgerald, Solicitor; John Boylan, Managing Partner; and William Hanly, Solicitor.

Legal merger is a big boost for Cork A

t a time when a cynical populace are quick to quip an unflattering lawyer joke or two, it’s refreshingly different to find a legal firm that places empathy and the personal touch high on their priority list. Law firm BDM Boylan are the people to see if you wish to solve your issue swiftly,

family disputes; Divorce; Mediation and Judicial Separation. “The best Lawyers are those who can influence their own clients, not the opposition”, says David, “and we aim for quick, satisfactory resolution; not years of entanglement or drawn–out battles.”

Know the facts Priorities matter Dear Lorcan, On the 22nd of May we as a nation will make a very important decision. I am speaking of course of the Marriage Equality referendum. Given the amount of posters, flyers and media coverage at the moment you have no doubt been subjected to a barrage of information. Historically Irish referenda have been a time of much misinformation and muddying of the waters. This time is no different. The wording of the referendum we will be voting on is ‘Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex’. There is no mention of surrogacy. No mention of adoption. (Which has been legislated for recently and will be unaffected by the referendum result). What we are voting on is equality of marriage. If we vote yes we will be the first country in the world to introduce Marriage Equality by popular vote. We will make world headlines. As someone heavily involved in tourism I can tell you that coverage like that is priceless. Tourists are much more likely to choose Ireland if they hear positive things about our country. The land of a thousand welcomes, open to all. A no vote would have the opposite effect. We would be telling the world that we are not a welcoming open society.

During the campaign I have heard many testimonies from LGBT people and their families. So many feel truly oppressed. They feel that they are not equal citizens. Parents see a situation where some of their children can get married while others can’t. If you have ever been treated unfairly you know how destructive it can be. It casts a shadow over your life. We have the power to remove that shadow for so many. One of the primary objections I have met during the campaign has been on religious grounds. The answer I give is that this referendum is about state marriage, not religious marriage. No religion or religious group owns the word marriage. The oldest written reference to the institution of marriage comes from Hammurabi’s Code of Ancient Mesopotamia (broadly covering modern day Iraq) dating 1754BC. Since then marriages have been performed by numerous groups and states. So having said all that, I strongly urge you to vote yes for equality on May 22nd. Let’s make sure we have an open and fair society for all our citizens. Regards, Eric Nolan, Labour Director of Elections, Cork East

service. The Hanly Report 2003 recommended that by 2012 there should be 3600 medical consultants employed in our hospital system. Very little real progress has been made in achieving this target. The use of locums and agency staff leads to lack of continuity in patient care. Aside from the recent concerns about quality, locum staff are far more expensive than what the health system would be paying permanent staff in similar roles. I believe that it is in the best interests of the Health Service, the patients and the people of this country that the recruitment of medical consultants would be given the priority it deserves. Kind Regards, Yours sincerely, Senator Colm Burke

Got to pick a pocket or two? Sir, Recently my wallet was stolen from me in Dublin city centre. I reported the matter to the Gardaí. They recorded it and said pickpockets were a plague in the city. Now, here’s a thought. A pickpocket stealing my wallet constitutes a crime. However, if the government does exactly the same thing — ie takes my money without my consent — well, that’s ok. That’s at the heart of this new legislation on unpaid bills such as water charges and TV licences. The government, it seems, is seeking to give itself the right to pick

Dear Sir, I refer to recent reports dealing with medical negligence claims against hospitals and the concerns over locum staff who necessitated the recall of x-rays and scans in a number of hospitals. I believe that the Health Service Executive must now prioritise the recruitment of hospital consultants and fill the vacancies which presently exist or which are occupied by locum consultants. In January 2015, it was confirmed in a reply which I received at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children that there are 325 consultant posts vacant or occupied by locum consultants out of a total of 2,314 posts (excluding consultant posts in psychiatry). This represents a 14% vacancy rate in senior positions within the health

All he has to do is is say: ‘I know where you live, so I can come and get you any time I want.’ I am reminded of this when I hear a sweet–voiced actress in a radio ad saying Irish Water is safeguarding your water for the future. Confidence is growing in Cork Cork Chamber’s first quarterly economic trends survey of 2015 have revealed a positive start to the year for Cork–based businesses with high levels of business confidence, positive increases in turnover and increases in net profit. Conor Healy, Cork Chamber CEO, said the survey indictes “a 90% confidence level amongst respondents in the financial future of their business over the next 12 months. This figure, while slightly lower than last quarter, is one of the highest reported confidence levels since the economic trends survey began in 2009, when just 51.5% reported confidence in the future of their business”. Confidence figures are strengthened by reported and projected increases in turnover and net profit. 64% of businesses in Cork reported an increase in turnover in this year’s first quarter, and 73% of businesses

project increases in their turnover over the forthcoming quarter. 64% predict increases in net profits in the same period. Meanwhile, 36% of businesses reported an increase in their number of employees over the first quarter of the year, and nearly 60% currently have vacancies advertised. However the survey also high-

lighted a number of persistent issues for businesses in Cork, with access to credit and working capital a problem for 25% of the county’s SMEs. 59% of respondents say the county’s road infrastructure is a handicap, highlighting a need to adequately link Cork to cities and major towns outside of Dublin. “The findings of this quarter’s survey showed that the development of the M20 Cork–Limerick Road, N22 Ovens–Ballyvourney, N28 Cork–Ringaskiddy and upgrading the Dunkettle interchange will have the most positive impact on our members businesses,” said Conor Healy. Given the ongoing troubles of Cork Airport, it’s not surprising that 97% of businesses indicated that having good air access to overseas destinations is important and 65% of respondents are not satisfied with the range of destinations served directly to/from Cork Airport.

Office solutions Setting up an enterprise can be tricky long before you get to the stage where you need to start thinking about an office. After “location location location,” the next most important consideration is “content, content, content”, and office furniture — as well as all the sundries that go with it — can be a huge expense. Cash Factory at the Kinsale Road Retail Centre is a great idea if you’re looking for quality, good–value furniture to kit out your office, and they have it at about a third of the price of other suppliers, on average. What’s more, they’ll happily de-

liver your filing cabinets, chairs, desks and anything else the same day, and help you to assemble it, if necessary. Cash Factory also specialises in kitting out rental properties.

Be safe, not sorry! Rubikon are launching their public fire, health and safety training courses in Cork. The courses are targeted at the city’s and county’s SMEs and will commence with manual handling training in The Gresham Metrepole Hotel on May 26th. Manual handling injuries typically account for one third of all reported injuries, according to the HSE, and just 35 manual handling injury claims cost € 2.9 million in 2006. Funding call for Cork There are now just over three weeks left for community groups in Cork to apply for funding through the Bright Ideas following an extension of the deadline. A total fund of €100,000 is available for creative projects that can demonstrate tangible ways to transform, improve or rejuvenate any aspect of Irish community life. The majority of applications are for projects that can improve physical and mental wellbeing, create better civic spaces, protect people online and provide for youth initiatives. Four aspects of community life are leading the trend: 1. Bright Lives: From companionship for the elderly to arts groups and mental health initiatives, these projects are working to make a difference to the mental and physical wellbeing of communities.

Cry “haddock!” O

ne of the most popular of all the fish we eat, the traditional Irish approach to haddock has been to smoke it and/or serve it in a thick, milky sauce or as part of a rich, warming chowder. It’s a staple of the fish and chips industry, and — though this is more popular in northern Europe and in Scotland than it is here — makes for a heck of a breakfast, as well as a heck of a fish supper. If you’ve ever been lucky enough to be served fishballs

by a Norwegian or a Swede, then they were more than likely haddock too, and fish curries are traditionally built around this close relative of cod. For such a versatile fish, it’s a wonder we’ve stuck with the smoked/milky options for so long, but now we too are starting to diversify, as this recipe courtesy of Carrigaline’s Good Fish Company shows! It’s a delicious, sharp–tasting, complex–flavoured dish which makes a feature of cumin, highlighting just why Asian and Indian fish curries

are often made with haddock in mind. The vinegar and coriander cut through the rich flavour of the oil and the sweet, sharp, tangy tomato salsa contrasts with both, while the garlic and scallions make it mouth– wateringly aromatic.

Ingredients

• 1 tsp Cumin • 2 tsp garlic powder • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 3 tablespoons of olive oil • 200g cherry tomatoes, cut in half • A handful of scallions, chopped • A drop of white wine vinegar • A pinch of thyme, leaves only • A small handful of fresh chopped coriander Method

• 4 haddock fillets with their skin on

1. Put 2 tsp. of olive oil in frying pan and heat gen-

Sautéed Haddock with homemade fresh Tomato Salsa – serves 4

tly. Add the fish to the pan, skin side down and fry until it’s golden and crisp. Turn the fish over and cook the flesh side for another one or two minutes until it’s just starting to get flaky. Transfer to a plate and keep it warm — be careful not to keep it too hot though or it’ll dry out: keep an eye on the edges of the flakes and be sure they’re not starting to curl back. If they do, you’ll end up with tough fish, so pay close attention! 2. Add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil to the pan

and sauté the tomatoes and scallions for a minute — again be careful not to burn the scallions or you’ll have an acrid taste. Add a splash of the wine vinegar and cook over a high heat for a minute until the tomatoes are a little soft. 3. Season the tomatoes and add in the herbs. Put the haddock fillets on top, skin side up, and serve with some lovely warm homemade bread and a nice dry white wine for an ideal light but super tasty summertime treat.

This month’s graduating class at the Orso Introduction to Barista Skills course. Picture by: Emma Kelly

Raising the bar(ista) Coffee is on the up and up. Ten years ago there was a scant handful of coffee shops around Cork. Ten years before that and you’d be lucky to get a spoonful of some awful ‘mild blend’ instant along with a strange look for not drinking a decent cuppa tae. Now, in addition to having some of the best coffee houses in the country, Cork is a centre of excellence for roasting, too: The Golden Bean, Cork Coffee Roasters and Badger & Dodo are testament to that.

And, increasingly, people are abandoning the cafetiere and the kettle in their homes in favour of a big investment in an espresso machine and grinder. They’re costly, sure, but look after them well and you’ll have a lifetime of great coffee. Great coffee, that is, if you know what you’re doing. Luckily, barista courses are also becoming more popular and accessible. Orso’s barista training evenings are a great example. The Pembroke

Street establishment shuts up shop ahead of the three–hour course, in the company of the exceptionally personable Yuliyan Adrianov, a barista with six years of experience who’s equal parts teacher and entertainer. Making a good cup of coffee can be more complicated than you might think, but he tackles it with aplomb. Half way through, and an unexpected treat, the class sits down to some of Orso’s exceptional North African cuisine before

getting back to the important business of tamping, cupping, frothing and everything else you’d expect from a half–decent barista. Courses are a regular occurrance and if you’re as big a lover of coffee as I am then you owe it to yourself to take an opportunity for a ‘behind the scenes’ peek at what it really takes to get your coffee just right. Mail barista@orso.ie to book your place; you’ll be glad you did!

Prepare for the feast This week saw the launch, in the form of two outdoor ‘flash feasts’ (one on Oliver Plunkett Street and another on the Coal Quay) to whet the appetites of the people of Cork for a gigantic banquet which will form a centrepiece of the Cork Midsummer Festival next month. 400 hungry people will line Oliver Plunkett Street on Sunday, June 14th, between 6.30pm and 9pm to have their fill of some of the best food that Cork has to offer, in three courses, courtesy of Jacques, Les Gourmandises, Market Lane,

Pictured at the launch on Oliver Plunkett Street were: Gillian Keating, Chairperson of the Cork City Centre Forum, Mairead Jacob from Idaho Café, Pamela Kelly Gough from Market Lane,Tina Oldham, Isaacs, Kevin Mortell from Jacques, Jack Crotty, the Rocket Man, Victor Ó Murchú, House Café, Sharon Tul from Dashi, Elayne Hickey, Nash 19, and Francois Conrady from Les Gourmandises. Idaho, House, Orso, Dashi, Isaacs, Nash 19, The Rocket Man, Farmgate Café and Iago. The event, called “Our Table” will, in the words of Cork City Centre Forum chair Gillian Keating, demonstrate “what can be achieved through collaborative efforts and commitment”. Looking forward to the big eat, Cork Midsummer Festival curator Kath Gorman said “this is the first event of its kind in the Midsummer Festival, and it’s set to be a great celebration. All are welcome!”

Stephanie Kearney, 17, student at Colaiste Mhuire in Buttevant; with Brandon Moran from Colaiste na Sceilge, Cahirciveen, Laura Stack from Hazelwood College, Dromcollogher, Limerick and Charlotte Hal, 16, a student at Midleton College.

Stephanie cooks up a storm Two Cork students have been lauded at the Munster Apprentice Chef Project. 17–year–old Stephanie Kearney, a transition year student at Coláiste Mhuire in Buttevant, took first prize while Midleton College’s Charlotte Hall took joint third in the contest, which was themed around “Good Mood Food”. Stephanie’s winning dish was pan–fried sea bass with gnocchi, asparagus and shellfish bisque, and crab spring rolls. She said “I’m delighted to have won and my thanks to my teacher Mary Dunlea for suggesting the competition to me. I entered because I want-

ed to find out more about a career as a professional chef and learn more about healthy food and ingredients. I have learned so much about the importance of “Good Mood Foods” in the diet and how it really can make such a difference to your well–being. The mentoring that I received from chef Mark Doe was fantastic and I loved working in a busy professional kitchen.” Stephanie’s prize includes a €1,000 voucher for her school’s home economics department, a monogrammed chef ’s uniform and an internship with head chef Simon Regan of the five–star Hotel Europe in Killarney.

Litfest 2015 lifts off Ballymaloe’s Litfest, a celebration of food, drink and literature, kicks off today in east Cork featuring more than 20 separate talks and tastings involving wine, craft beer and cider, gin, whiskey, cocktails and rum, featuring experts from all over the world as well

as the food, music and conviviality for which Ballymaloe is well known. The festival runs over the course of the weekend and will highlight the huge diversity of food, culture and drink for which Cork is famous.

Doing an extension? What to take into consideration. An extension is a great way to add space and value to your home - if it’s done well. So, how do you ensure the money you spend gets the results you need? If you are going to extend or renovate your home, there are a number of things to be considered in order to get the best out of the work that is being carried out. If you decide to use EBO we can offer you the expertise of our internal architect and engineer. When we meet with you we will get your ideas on what you want and advise you on how to maximise what you end up with. We will advise about the size, often going bigger will not cost too much more and it is important to get the design right, the size right, the scale right, and the proportions right. You want it to fit your needs, fit in with the existing house, and make the extension connect well internally with the existing space. Now is a great time to consider work on your existing property because of the Home Renovation Incentive Scheme. The Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) Scheme provides for tax relief for Homeowners and Landlords by way of an Income Tax credit at 13.5% on repair, renovation or improvement works carried out on a main home or rental property by qualifying Contractors. Tax relief can be claimed on work over €4,405 (before VAT at 13.5%) and can be claimed on up to €30,000 before VAT at 13.5% on work carried out per property. This €4,405 (before VAT) can be the total from any number of jobs carried out and paid for by homeowners or landlords. Even if a person is spending more than €30,000 on work, the 13.5% tax credit can be claimed on the amount up to €30,000. So what does that actually mean in terms of money in your pocket? Any work a person has carried out where they have spent any amount between €4,405 and €30,000 before VAT can receive a tax credit of 13.5% of what they have paid out. So for example if you spend €5000, you will receive a tax credit of €595, with a limit to be claimed of €4050 per property. Even if you are not considering an extension to your property, EBO can offer any number of home improvement services from redecorating and painting, bathroom refurbishments, electrical work and gas and oil boiler servicing, repair and replacement. So whatever you need done in your property give us a call. For a limited time Ebo Home Rescue will include the services of their interior architect free of charge to help you design an amazing extension. If you’d love to make the most out of your house and turn it into the kind of home you’ve always wanted, without any broken promises or missed deadlines, do the sensible thing: call Ebo Home Rescue today on 021 2348524 or visit ebohomerescue.ie.

Family 15 May 2015

De–stress from distress By Orla McLoughlin Stress is a normal part of life and the human body is equipped to respond and react to it. Stress can have postive impacts: it assists the your body and mind to be alert, to avoid danger and to be focused and productive. Modern life, however, includes pressures to achieve, to juggle many responsiblities and to excel, in both personal and family life. This constant pressure can lead to continous stress which can become intolerable over time, impacting negatively on physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Stress becomes negative and creates “distress” when you face continous challenges and pressures without sufficient time to recover or relax. When we are constantly stressed without much relief it can have significant physical and psychological impacts on our health. People who experience distress on a regular basis may suffer from headaches, physical aches and pains,

stomach problems, elevated blood pressure, skin problems, chest pain, anxiety, depression and sleep difficulties. These problems can increase if alcohol, tobacco, drugs or sugary and fatty foods are used to ‘self medicate’. Distress can also impact on our interactions with others as intolerance and impatience increase, and can decrease concentration and reduce your ability to perform. Over time this can lead to decreased confidence and self esteem. The good news is that you do not need to experience constant distress in your life.

Small changes can make a significant difference and you can learn to become more effective in how you overcome distress. Some people can struggle to break the cycle and seeking support could be the first step to tackling the issue. Cork’s Smart Psychology will present a lecture on Stress and Anxiety on May 19th in The Kingsley. They will also be facilitating a skills–based course commencing in June, which will teach practical steps for reducing distress and increasing a more fulfilling life. For further details visit smartpsychology.ie.

Explore the paradise islands of Thailand In association with Hotels.com By Carolina Annand So many friends have visited the Thai islands Phuket, Koh Samui and Phi Phi, I’d love to go. Can you recommend some luxurious but affordable places to stay?

T

hailand is a fabulous destination and there is so much to see and do. The islands you have chosen to visit are true gems and I can guarantee you won’t experience a holiday like it anywhere else in the world. Often referred

to as the ‘pearl of the south’, Phuket is the largest of the islands and is dotted with white beaches and tropical inland forests. Koh Samui is the third–largest island and is home to the most spectacular beaches with fabulous resorts, superb dinning experiences and secluded shallow shores. If you are into water activities you will be spoilt for choice, with everything from snorkeling and jet skiing to elephant treking and scuba diving available on the island. Sea kayaking can also be a really fun way to explore the exotic coastlands and experience something new. Boat trips are a fantastic way of getting a closer look at the islands. Phuket is home to some of the most breathtak-

ing scenery in the world so make the most of it by taking a guided tour to Phromthep Cape, Windmill Viewpoint and Patong Hil — just some

of the tropical landscapes worth checking out. Just beside Phromthep Cape lies a stunning white beach, Nai Han Beach, which is a little

less crowded than some of the more popular beaches in Phuket and is well worth a visit. One of the most popular at-

Where to Stay: Phuket Pacific Club Resort (****) The Pacific Club Resort is a hidden gem overlooking Karon Beach. The resort houses a rooftop swimming pool, pampering spa, and fitness facilities with panoramic mountain and ocean views.

Koh Samui Langham Place Samui at Lamai Beach (*****) Situated on the beach, this private luxury resort is a gorgeous with many of the villas offering secluded pools. Guests should take advantage of the “Borderless Dining” dotted throughout the resort.

Phi Phi Islands Phi Phi Island Village (****) Located beside Ao Ton Sai Beach, this world class resort is a tropical paradise making it the perfect setting to relax and unwind. Guests can enjoy the privacy of their very own beach, a full service spa and dinner on the beach.

tractions in Koh Smaui is the Hin Ta Hin Yai — the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. Another place to check out is the Samui waterfalls. While they may not be the tallest Thailand has to offer, they certainly present their own tropical charm. The Phi Phi Islands, comprising Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi Lee, are definitely my favourite destinations in Thailand. Best known as the paradise locations for the Leonardo Di Caprio film The Beach, they are a diving and snorkeling enthusiasts’ heaven. Hat Ranti beach and Ao Lo Bakao Bay are also worth a visit but be prepared though as electricity and water supplies are sometimes in high demand here.

Seeing that summer is on the way (any day now, we promise!) it’s time to start planning your annual getaways, and all the work that’s been put in to making Ireland more attractive to foreign tourists in recent years has had the additional benefit of making it a great place for we Irish to ex-

plore in more detail too! There’s been a big boom in active holidays, not just for young adventurous types but for older holidaymakers and families too. The Wild Atlantic Way, for instance, is punctuated along its length by opportunities to go horse riding, kayaking, surfing, wind–surf-

ing and kite surfing, climbing, hill walking, orienteering, diving, caving and much more. This year, instead of making plans to lie by a pool in Mallorca or to stand in line at Disneyworld, why not save yourself the air fare and take in a little more of what our own island has to offer?

You’ll get the additional benefit of getting fit and healthy, and if you’re going with your family, maybe even of establishing a hobby that will last a lifetime, as well as making some great memories and, of course, countless opportunities for ‘look how cool I am!’ selfies.

Defy convention

Seán Creedon takes to the wilds of Wicklow to try out the newest member of the Jeep family

J

eep do have some catchy names for their vehicles, like Cherokee and Wrangler. Now the American company has come up with another classic, the Renegade. Now you could say that ‘renegade’ is a word where the meaning has changed a little over the years. When I was young, to be called a ‘renegade’ was certainly not

a compliment, but nowadays it seems to be accepted for what it really is: a person who rejects lawful or conventional behaviour. I had to check the dictionary for that description! At the launch of the new range of Renegade Jeeps in Glendalough last month, Gerry Clarke, Jeep’s Irish manager, said that they had no worries about the name as the younger generation didn’t

see it as a problem. I’m sure he is correct. Jeep, who are distributed in Ireland by FIAT, are making a big push to make more inroads into the Irish market. This is their first venture in the compact SUV division. Externally the Renegade has a square look to it, but it’s very impressive. The front end is dominated by the familiar Jeep seven–section grille which you cannot miss.

Most car companies go to the great lengths to prove that their 4x4 vehicles can handle tough off–road conditions. Jeep is no exception, and the Renegade showed it was well able to climb the rough terrain among the Wicklow hills last month. In reality though, the majority of Irish buyers of off–road vehicles will rarely get their wheels muddy. I liked the high driving position and it was really comfortable on the road. There is ample room for five passengers and a massive boot, but no spare wheel. However, there is plenty of room for a spare, so I would advise you to at least get a space–saver. My family all enjoyed the Renegade and in the mornings

we appreciated the two heated front seats. It’s a very neat motor and handled very well in an urban environment. The Jeep brand has been with us since 1941 and that year is engraved on the dash. There are several other ‘easter egg’ type designs sprinkled throughout the car, and the rear lights have a ‘jerrycan’ design. Jeep say that the Renegade is very important car for them in the Irish market, where they expect the breakdown of buyers to be 60% male and 40% female. Sales of new cars are booming once again here, but it’s also becoming a very crowded market, with new SUV’s coming to our shores nearly every week. However, I think the Renegade, which is

made in Europe, is as good as anything I have seen this year for comfort, looks and price. For me, the Renegade brought back memories of that that old ad for Chenounction, a product to cure mastistis in cows, which used to air on RTÉ radio many years ago: “It’s a quare name, but great stuff.” Prices start at €22,950 and there are four trim levels: Sport, Longtitude, Limited and Trailhawk. Jeep expect their 1.6 diesel to be their best seller. I drove a white version, but I think it looks even better in red. At present Jeep has only seven Irish dealers: here in Cork, get to Dan Seaman Motors on Forge Hill if you want to take the Renegade out for a test drive.

A real Mini adventure

A FIAT of strength Taking tiny to a new level of tough, FIAT’s 500X will arrive in Cork this weekend. The Italian company’s new crossover comes in two ‘flavours’: urban and off–road, with a wide range of engine and transmission options. Based on the historic 500 platform — a favourite for

generations — the metrolpolitan Pop is a larger (yet still svelte) version of the 500, while the hardy, rugged off– road Cross version is available with four–wheel drive. With engine options providing up to 170BHP to share between the wheels, it’s no slouch when it comes to making its

way across Cork’s off–road terrain! It also brings a wide range of cargo options, and both styles are heavy on ‘infotainment’. You can get a taste of the next step in FIAT’s evolution at Dan Seaman Motors on Forge Hill from today, Friday May 15th.

It’s electric! ESB electric car charging point, South Mall, Cork. Picture by: John Sheehan Photography.

Electric Vehicle parking is to become even more of a feature of Cork following a decision by Cork City Council to increase the number of EV parking spaces and crack down on drivers who park regular cars in them. The new dedicated charging spaces follow on from legislation published by the Department of Transport which allow local authorities to declare it an offence for cars which aren’t recharging to occupy the spaces. The new reserved parking

spaces will join the dedicated spaces on Copley Street, South Mall and Lower Glanmire Road. The county has dedicated spaces at Cork County Hall, in Monkstown and in Blarney. The Black Ash Park and Ride facility has 50 free charging spaces. Cork leads the way in the promotion of electric vehicles in Ireland, beginning with our historic Drive 4 Zero initiative which was launched last year. Ian Winning of Cork City

Council’s transport division (above left) said: “More widespread use of EVs on trips to the city centre would contribute to a reduction in harmful emissions, less noise and improved energy efficiency. We wish to support the investment not least by EV owners themselves. EV drivers have been very positive about their experience of ‘going electric’ and they are mapping out options for the future, especially in the city centre.”

Mini owners of Cork take note! The Mini Club Of Ireland is going to tackle The Wild Atlantic Way — or rather 700k of it — in order to raise much–needed funds for The Cork Association for Autism. Next Friday, May 22nd, a convoy of Minis of all ages, from vintage and classic 1959 models right up to brand spanking new 151C examples, will depart from Kinsale,

making their way around the coasts of Cork, Kerry and Limerick as they head for County Clare two days later. It won’t be two days of pure driving, of course. With the stunning beauty of the Wild Atlantic Way forming the backdrop, there’ll be plenty of calls for pit–stops. The event is open to any and all Mini drivers at a cost of €80, though Mini Club of Ireland members only have to

Let there be light! Last year here in Drive we wrote about a novel experiement in Holland which saw road surfaces transformed into solar panels, with the aim of driving up electricity production ahead of a boom in electric car sales. Now, the results of the experiment are in: the Dutch scientists and engineers behind the project say that a test track near Amsterdam has proven significantly more successful than they ever could have hoped. Over the course of six

months, the 70–metre solar roadway has produced more than 3,000 KwH of energy: in other words, enough to power a household for over a year. Using off–the–shelf materials, the team built a road which can support the weight of a 12–tonne truck without taking any damage and which is intelligent enough to regulate its own light–gathering behaviour. The next step is a wider rollout in Holland, as well as a stateside test in California.

pay €60. Entry forms for the trek can be found at miniclub. ie. The Cork Association for Autism is a charity that provides 250 adults in Cork with autism spectrum disorders with the support they need to live their lives to the fullest. The Mini convoy will raise funds for a new day service centre in Mogeely in east Cork, which is expected to cost €300,000 in total.

Cork triathlete has eyes on the prize Cork triathlete Bryan Keane is firmly in contention for a place at Rio 2016 after a fifth–place finish at the Chengdu World Cup in China on Saturday, May 9th. Keane finished the event in a

time of 1.46.21, just nine seconds off a podium finish, and 14 off Australian Ryan Fisher in first. The former Leevale Athletic Club man posted a solid mid–pack finish in the 1500 metre swim, before

climbing the field throughout the proceeding 40 kilometre bike ride and ten kilometre run. Keane’s next stop is the Yokohama World Series race this Saturday, May 16th.

Cork Basketball scores high

The Dragonslayers? City battle Limerick Cork City will be looking to continue their recent run of good form when they travel to Limerick on Saturday, May 16th. Having this week come from behind to beat Drogheda United 4-1 with Billy Dennehy contributing a hat-trick, manager John Caulfied is hoping the side will start to share goal-scoring duties: “After the experience of

Drogheda the other night, we know that you can’t start slowly, you have to be on your game right from the start. “It’s nice to score goals and I think we need to spread goals around the team; if you don’t have three or four of your players getting over ten, you can’t win a league, so that’s what we need,” he said. Kick–off in Limerick is at 6.30pm.

Munster face into their most important PRO12 game of the season on Saturday, May 16th knowing that failure to win will deprive them of a home semi–final. Third–place Munster, currently level on points with first and second Ospreys and Glasgow Warriors, are taking on ninth–place NewportGwent Dragons in Irish Independent Park. A bonus point win will place considerable pressure on both the Ospreys, who are away to Connacht, and the Dragons

who face Ulster in Belfast and could secure a home semi–final: “No side has ever won an away semi–final. That says it all and emphasises the importance of us doing a job,” said head coach Anthony Foley. Meanwhile, back rows CJ Stander and Tommy O’Donnell have been named in this season’s Guinness PRO12 Dream Team. Kick–off at Irish Independent Park is at 3pm, and tickets priced €20 are available from ticketmaster.ie.

Three Cork men have been named in the Ireland U18 Basketball squad, and are set to travel to this summer’s European Basketball Championships. Fomer Neptune man Jordan Blount is currently starring at forward for Spanish side Canarias Basketball Academy, recently top scoring for his team as they reached the last eight of the Spanish Championship. Centre Conor Ryan has captained Munster Rugby at U17 level, and plays his club basketball for Fr Matthews. He’s joined on the squad by club mate Owen Connolly, a Garda who played a major part in the side’s recent capture of the 2015 U18 Men’s National Cup. The Irish side has been drawn in a group alongside hosts Austria, and Denmark, FYR of Macedonia, Israel, and Iceland for the tournament,

which tips in on Thursday, July 23rd. Meanwhile, Cork basketballers dominate the top prizes in the Basketball Ireland Annual Awards list, reconising the 2014/15 season’s standout players. C&S UCC Demons player–coach Colin O’Reilly has been named men’s Player and Coach of the Year, while Team Montenotte Hotel’s Niamh Dwyer has been named Women’s Premier League Player of the Year. Both Cork players played key roles in their respective sides’ league and cup doubles, and will now be honoured at Basketball Ireland’s AGM on Saturday, June 6th. Dwyer’s coach Mark Scannell will join the pair on the night, picking up the Coach of the Year award for his part in the Glanmire’s oufit success this season.

Row, row, row A group of young Belfast rowers are coming to Cork to compete in a special youth race aimed at developing understanding between young people on either side of the border. Ocean to City–An Rás Mór is Ireland’s premier long– distance rowing race, and includes a two–kilometre youth circuit from Blackrock Castle to the Clarion Hotel. Taking place on Saturday, May 30th, organisers are expecting a broad range of entrants according to Pádraig Ó Duinnín, who trains the Belfast hopefuls. “Some are more competitive than others: a real mix is the best way of putting it. People

may say that they’re ‘not really competitive,’ but put two boats beside each other on the water and see who’s telling the truth. “Just because some of the entrants haven’t trained extensively doesn’t mean they don’t get competitive when they’re out on the water,” he told The Cork News. Ciarraí O’Sullivan has just completed an archaeology degree at UCC and is competing for the third time. While for her, the race is mainly about “the company, and the banter with a good, solid crew,” she enjoys the training regime in the weeks before the race: “I try to get out on the water as much as possible, and

I find that running helps to build strength in your legs. “I enjoy the excitement of a race, and pushing myself,” she told The Cork News. Emer Morrison, a student from Belfast, had no rowing background before taking part in a workshop in Lisburn two years ago. Now training once a week on the Lagan, she’s looking forward to visiting Cork City for the first time: “I got involved because of the opportunity to meet new people, and I’ve never been to Cork before so I wanted to see what it’s like,” she said. For more information on An Rás Mór, see corkharbourfestival.com, and oceancity.com.

The war on weight The WHO has predicted that Irish people will be among the world’s very fattest — if not the fattest — in less than two decades unless we make a radical change to how we approach fitness, diet and physical activity. Cork, already a force to be reckoned with sports and fitness wise both nationally and worldwide (ask Sonia O’Sullivan, Rob Heffernan and Sam Maguire!) will be leading the charge against our slide into obesity thanks

in no small part to the efforts of New Minds Fitness Academy, a Cork–based private ITEC college. New Minds offers full– and part–time fitness and personal trainer courses spread over a six–month period which can not only change the lives of their students, but hopefully the thousands of people they’ll each go on to train, encourage and influence over the course of their careers. Founder Damien Twohig

explains that an ITEC qualification is recognised as a mark of excellence around the world, and the timing couldn’t be better, as grants of up to €500 are currently available to candidates. With the independently–assessed course covering everything from nutrition to spinning and even Olympic lifting, the fight back against the WHO’s dire predictions about our future starts at New Minds Fitness Academy in Glanmire.

Schullduggery for Nick Formerly an international rugby player, construction worker and journalist and currently a TV presenter, BBC’s Nick Knowles is about to take on a daunting challenge in west Cork…

N

ick Knowles, presenter of BBC National Lottery quiz shows with audiences of seven million people, says he’s nervous about hosting a table quiz in a pub in Schull. “I’ll need a pint or two before I get up, I think. I like an ale, but whatever the local brew is, I’ll be happy,” he says. Knowles is coming to west Cork for the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival, where he will introduce a six–minute preview of Golden Years, a film he co–wrote with director John Miller. “It’s a Bonnie and Clyde/ Robin Hood–style film in the best traditions of English comedy,” he explains of his first excursion into feature– length films. The preview will play before the Filmmakers Quiz, a movie trivia quiz Nick will MC in the Bunratty Inn on Schull’s Main Street. Facing the pub’s regulars makes for a departure from Nick’s usual quiz work and he says that, it being Cork, a pint of Murphy’s or Beamish may be had to settle the nerves: “If you’re a rugby person, you drink the black stuff. Even at Twickenham, you’d chug down a pint of Guinness,” he says. Having first come to public attention as the presenter of home makeover show DIY SOS, Nick says he finds his association with the building trade “weird,” and that he fell into construction by chance: “When I left school, I wanted to play rugby. I’m tall, and I was about 16 or 18 stone, which was big enough to be a

flanker in those days. “I travelled around, playing in Colorado, Australia and New Zealand, and I picked up labouring because it was easy cash, and most clubs had a construction connection,” he says. He left the rugby and building world to become a news journalist, with early stints at Sky and the BBC, but soon grew tired of dealing with ‘party line’ answers from British politicians, and what he saw as the media’s willingness to vilify ordinary people: “Trying to get straight answers out of politicians used to get on my nerves. I hated the way news and ‘documentary’ shows would take a simplistic line on ‘villains and crooks,’ and would set people up as hate figures, too. They do that a lot. Just look at shows like Benefits Street,” he says. He says that ultimately he wanted to “entertain people,” and that his past on building sites allowed him the chance to front DIY SOS. It was while working on the show that he began noticing people who were “falling through society’s net,” he says, and came to empathise with those struggling to survive in an unequal society: “We now live in a world where the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer. It’s the same whether it be Dublin or London. “People who have played by the rules all their lives find themselves struggling to make ends meet, while the bankers who caused the last great recession have gotten away with little or no sanction,” he says.

Nick Knowles. Picture by: Gary Moyes.

Golden Years protagonists Arthur and Martha Goode — played by Arthur Hill and Virginia McKenna — are two pensioners who have “always played by the rules,” says Nick. Hit by the pensions crisis and seeing their savings wiped out, Arthur and Martha turn to crime, using “the invisibility cloak of old age” to rob banks in an effort to survive and save their local bowls club. “It’s a story of people in everyday life breaking the rules to get by. I absolutely empathise with them,” says Nick. He explains that the film explores the justness of our laws, and whether the police should be on the side of what is right, or what is legal: “It’s a real quandary: should police be on the side of moral-

ity or legality? “Look at the protests against government spending cuts in Greece in 2010. You had policemen using tear gas and violence to disperse crowds of ordinary people. “These same policemen would then walk into their homes later that night and try to lead normal lives,” he says. He says that his empathy with recession–hit workers and anti–government protesters should not be confused with a taking a position on the left, and that as a writer, he values his “impartiality”: “You don’t have to be left wing to understand these people’s plight. The film is more an observation than a comment,” he says. A fan of Irish cinema — Brendan Gleeson’s The Guard

“People who have played by the rules all their lives find themselves struggling to make ends meet.”

is a particular favourite — Nick says he’s “massively looking forward” to debuting Golden Years in west Cork, a landscape he says reminds him of Jim Sheridan’s The Field: “It feels really wonderful to be showing people in major cities across the world how to run a film festival,” he says. Nick Knowles will host the Filmmakers Quiz in Bunratty Inn, Schull on Saturday, May 23rd at 8.30pm. The quiz will be preceded by a six–minute preview screening of Nick’s Golden Years. The Corona Fastnet Short Film festival runs from Wednesday, May 20th to Sunday, May 24th. For more information, visit their website: fastnetshortfilmfestival. com.
