“Hours are a great bargaining tool” Dunnes Stores worker tells of “bullying culture” By Eoghan McNeill news@thecorknews.ie

Cork Dunnes workers who took part in last week’s strike are “genuinely scared…petrified” of being punished for striking, according to an employee at a Dunnes outlet in Cork. According to the employee, who agreed to speak to The Cork News under the condition of anonymity, Cork

workers who took part in the strike have been subject to punitive measures: “Those who took part in the strike have been made move department, and had their hours cut to the bare minimum of 15. People who had their lives organised around their shift, who would start at 9.30am so they could leave their children to school, are now scheduled for 7.30am,” she said. Under the terms of their

contracts, Dunnes workers are guaranteed 15 hours per week, although most work up to 30 hours weekly. “Hours are a great bargaining tool. Your pay can essentially be cut in half without the bat of an eyelid, with no reason given. The employee spoke of what she called a “bullying culture” in the outlet, with workers reluctant to question management figures for fear of having their hours cut. “We made a number of formal complaints to head office about bullying and…received a letter with two lines, saying continued on page 2

Editor’s letter

I

t’s amazing the difference a few days of sunshine will make. People have been strolling — in fact, positively ambling, as far as I can see — around Cork with vague, “I can’t quite believe this is happening” smiles on their sunburnt faces, delieriously happy to be wearing t–shirts, shades, sandals and even, in a few cases, shorts as we cross from the first into the second week of April. In fact, if you’re reading this letter any time between now and Sunday chances are the sky is still blue, if it’s daytime. The morning fogs which have bedevilled us are a consequence of the rapid rise in temperature and have only served to highlight all the more the unseasonal glory of high skies and blazing sunshine when they fade away. Of course, it can’t last forever. Unless climate change has suddenly really kicked up a notch or two without anybody noticing, this is a false spring and it must surely give way to more Irish conditions, but a quick look at the Internet seems to show that, for as far ahead as it’s reasonable to expect the maths to hold true, we’re in for another lovely few days after a slightly dreary Sunday. But the knowledge that it’ll all get back to normal at some stage (‘surely be to god we’ll get the rain back, I’m miserable from the heat!’ as I heard one woman complaining today) hasn’t dulled the fine sheen of joy that we’re all feeling. Well, most of us anyway. The sun, and lots of strolling out and about in it, has reinforced my deep and abiding love of Cork, both city and county. I spent a decent portion of last weekend reclined on soft grass atop a cliff at Ballyandreen in the far east of the county, gazing lazily at the horizon and chatting with friends. There was even a celebratory glass of champagne involved. The following day was a long tramp through Killeagh woods as they scrambled to get ready for summer, lunch at the foot of Castlemartyr Castle and another meander, this time around the quiet places east of Carrigtohill. I’ve spent my lunchtimes since just milling about the city centre, wearing the same little half grin that everyone else seems to have. Cork, my friends, is absolutely gorgeous when the sun shines, and all the work that’s been put into the city (and the inconvenience that’s gone with it) over the past however many years is really starting to pay off. I know I’m waxing lyrical, and I’ve probably fallen victim to the “I am absolutely certain that because the sun is shining right now nothing can ever go wrong with the world ever again no matter what” bug, but having seen the difference just a little sunshine has made around the city and county, it’s hard not to be happy to be right here, a short stretch from the sea, or the mountains, or the woods. Do yourself a favour while the summery weather lasts: go a little slower, and pause and look up more often. Look around you. Don’t waste it. I think we’re a solar powered people, we Rebels, so charge up while you can. Just watch out for the sunburn!

“Hours are a great bargaining tool” continued from page 1 our complaint had been acknowledged, (telling us) to contact our manager if we had any further issues. “The same manager that we complained about,” said the employee. Our source has worked in Dunnes for over 15 years, initially starting on a full– time contract, before going part–time after getting married and having children,

and chose to take part in last week’s strike on behalf of younger colleagues: “I was lucky, in that Dunnes got me through life,” she said. “They aren’t doing that anymore.” the strike, Following Dunnes workers’ union Mandate has received nationwide reports of dismissals, cuts to hours and changes in shift patterns. Workers in Cork say they are “living on their nerves, waiting to see what their

next punishment will be,” and more industrial action is planned: “It’s only strengthened our resolve. It can’t go on. We are adamant there will be at the very least one more strike,” said an employee. Lorraine O’Brien, Mandate Cork Division, confirmed our source’s reports: “Thankfully, there have been no Cork dismissals. We’re seeing a lot of cuts in hours and roster changes, though. “Those who had a regu-

lar shift pattern, where they had specifically expressed that certain days or hours were particularly hard for them to work, now find themselves rostered for these days. “There is an absolute clear divide between the treatment of staff who took part in the strike, and those who didn’t,” Ms O’Brien told The Cork News. When contacted by The Cork News for a response, Dunnes Stores declined to comment.

Douglas teacher is “willing to die” A Cork teacher has said she is “willing to die to protect the Irish education system,” saying she would go on hunger strike in protest at proposed changes to the Junior Cycle English programme. The proposed changes would see Junior Cycle English teachers assess their own students. Marian Wallis, an English,

Maths and Religion teacher at St Mary’s in Charleville has said that the proposed changes “tear at the very core of our education system.” “The current system is fair to students. It’s equitable and objective. “The way we teach our students depends on a mutual trust and respect in the class-

room. It depends on a classroom environment where students feel comfortable speaking freely and giving opinions, without fear of being judged,” Ms Wallis told The Cork News. Ms Wallis is now standing by her claim at an ASTI conference in Killarney this week that she would rather go on hunger

strike than assess her own students. “I would hope it doesn’t come to that, because I like living, and I like being alive. “But if say I will do something, I do it,” she said. “If Pádraig Pearse and Thomas MacDonagh were willing to die in the GPO, I’m willing to die for our education system,” she added.

Concern over Pana car ban By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

A proposed ban on private cars from St Patrick’s Street will further divide the city, with a knock–on effect on business along the city’s main thoroughfare, according to traders based on the city’s main street. The Cork City Centre Movement Strategy proposes a total ban on private cars from Patrick’s Street between 12.30pm and 6.30pm seven days a week, with just public transport, taxis, emergency vehicles and bicycles allowed. Cork City Council says the proposals would “improve the pedestrian environment in the city centre” and “reduce delays to public transport”. However, a final decision will only be made after all submissions are received and considered as part of public consultation, which starts today (Friday) for phase one and two, focusing on the areas around Grenville Place and St Patrick’s Street. English Market fishmonger Pat O’Connell highlighted that a customer coming into the city from the east and heading for the market, can currently drive up St Patrick’s Street and park at the Grand Parade. “They want to get as close to it as they can, so they aren’t going to be carrying heavy bags of fish or meat too far,” he said. “The last thing they want to be doing is park-

“If the proposals go ahead it will affect those coming from the east and northside.” ing on the other side of town and walking all the way back down. If the proposals go ahead it will affect those coming from the east and northside and that causes me concern, as it’s creating a divide in the city.” “We’ve had major infrastructure done in the last few years, and I really think the city centre should be left alone at the moment without causing more confusion,” he said. “I don’t see Patrick’s Street causing an awful lot of traffic jams and when I look at what’s being proposed, it will push traffic up the quays. I’m wondering is that going to cause serious traffic jams? Why replace something that’s not causing a problem with something that could cause a problem?” Claire Nash of Nash 19 restaurant on Princes Street and

president of Cork Business Association (CBA) said the proposal is “no surprise” to the CBA, and that the 6.30pm re–opening time for private cars should be “reduced to a little earlier”. She stated that a RAPID transport system needs to be put in place “before cars are taken out of the city”. However, Darren McAdam O’Connell of the Cork Cycling Campaign told The Cork News that St Patrick’s Street should not be seen as a route, but a destination. “Cyclists don’t cycle down Patrick’s Street to go somewhere, cyclists cycle to Patrick’s Street because they want to shop there,” he said. “It’s the same for car drivers. Very few people drive down Patrick’s Street these days and those that do, do so out of habit.” he added: “We are about attracting the best people in the world and retaining them, and they will go to the place where they can hop on their bikes, sit outside a coffee shop and not be stuck in a traffic jam,” he said. Documents on the strategy are available for public viewing in Cork City Hall reception from 9am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday until Friday, May 22nd. The final date for receipt of submissions is Friday, June 5th. Following consultation, final plans will be presented in July. Works in the Grenville Place area could commence at the end of this year, and works around St Patrick’s Street in early 2016.

Board ‘confident’ Cork landmark will be redeveloped Far–right speaker coming to Cork Representatives of a far-right Polish political party are set to hold events this weekend in Cork and Dublin. Marian Kowalski (pictured), the presidential candidate for Ruch Narodowy is to debate a fellow right–wing Polish presidential candidate in Cork on Sunday, April 12th. The meeting was originally to be held in St Luke’s Cross Amabassador Hotel, but following opposition from local activists is currently without a venue. Ruch Narodowy is a hardline nationalist organisation with links to fascist organisations across Europe,

according to Independent Worker’s Union member Alex Homits. “It’s a movement based on extreme nationalism and discrimination. “They’re essentially an amalgamation of right wing groups opposed to immigration, LGBT rights, feminism and equality,” said Mr Homits. Cork North Central TD Jonathan O’Brien also opposes the meeting: “Ruch Narodowy is aligned with groups who openly use fascist symbols and uniforms, express homophobic beliefs and issue anti–semitic statements,” he said.

The Cork County Board has insisted that the planned €70 million redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh will be completed, in spite of reports that €30 million of government money has been withdrawn from the much–publicised project. The proposed €70 million redevelopment is to be part– funded with €30 million provided by the government, but that portion of the overall bill is now under review following concerns over projected attendance of non–sporting events at the stadium. Department of Public Ex-

penditure and Reform officials have expressed concerns that a cost/benefit analysis prepared by the Cork County Board regarding these attendances may have been “overly optimistic.” The board has stated, however, that “no State monies have been withheld from the project,” and that the review is merely a matter of procedure. “An initial Cost-Benefit Analysis draft on the project was submitted in December 2014 and is the subject of ongoing dialogue. “It is entirely appropriate — and is the norm — that

any case being made for the expenditure of public monies would be subject to rigorous examination. Cork County Board is fully engaged with the department in that process.” “The board is confident that the basis of the business case for the redevelopment of Páirc Uí Chaoimh is correct,” said a county board spokesperson. Minister Seán Sherlock also maintained the work will proceed: “It is important to recognise that funding has been secured for Pairc Uí Chaoimh, he said.

“The government made the announcement last May and we are secure in our own minds that funding is guaranteed for the project. “There are some issues outstanding, but that is not unusual for a project of this size: a project long overdue for a stadium built in the 1970s.” “It is only right and proper that the GAA in Cork has the type of facilities that are now being built. The funding is there in principle. There is no doubt in my mind that we will have a stadium of the people, by the people,” said the Cork East TD.

Free GP care for under sixes Over 27,000 children under the age of six across Cork will be entitled to access free GP care from the end of June. The new entitlement, announced on Thursday following an agreement between the Department of Health, the HSE and the Irish Medical Organisation, will reduce pressure on the “squeezed middle” according to one Cork doctor. Blackpool GP Dr John Sheehan stated that “overall” he is positive about the new agreement, adding that it will “bring a sense of surety to patients and to those with young families”. “For people on the margins who are without a medical card, this will come as a welcome relief,” said Dr Sheehan, a Fianna Fáil city councillor. “For those significantly over the threshold, they may not need it, and would rather it goes to someone else: someone over the age of six who may be more deserving.” However, Dr Sheehan stated that if the free GP for those under six is a step on the road to universal healthcare, then

“For people on the margins… this will come as a welcome relief.”

people will be more “accepting” of it. There will also be an extension of free GP care to everyone over 70 years of age. Funding for the under sixes

has been increased to €67m and there will be a basic annual capitation fee of €125 per child. Health checks will be confined to two checks of

height and weight, one at two and one at age five, and there is to be a defined cycle of care for asthmatic under–six patients consisting of registra-

tion, one three–month review and annual review thereafter. “They recognise there is an increased need for care in children who are asthmatic,

and measuring height and weight will be done twice, so overall, I would be reasonably positive about it,” said Dr Sheehan. “Other aspects of the deal, such as the Diabetic Cycle of Care contract, is starting a process of looking at chronic disease management and I think that’s to be encouraged.” Minister for Primary Care, Social Care and Mental Health Kathleen Lynch said the agreement represents the “first step” in the phased introduction of a universal GP service without fees. “The commencement of this service this summer will make a real difference to the lives of the youngest in our society. This new contract will also mark a shift towards promoting health and wellbeing and away from the old ‘illness model’,” she said. However, Fianna Fáil health spokesperson on Billy Kelleher said free GP care for under sixes should not be prioritised over medical cards for people who have life–limiting conditions.

Cork TD tops expenses claims Cork South West TD Noel Harrington has topped the expenses claims from the Oireachtas Travel and Accommodation Allowance. The €2.98 million fund covers TDs’ costs for travelling to and from Leinster House, and overnight expenses they incur while in Dublin. Deputy Harrington claimed €54,415 in 2014, while fellow Cork South West TDs Jim Daly and Michael McCarthy both claimed €53,065. “I get that by virtue of how far away I live, which is 390 kilometres from Leinster House,” Deputy Harrington told The Cork News. “Furthermore, I run two constituency offices in Bantry and Skibbereen,” he added. While accepting that €54,415 is a “very large figure,” the Fine Gael TD said that he typically travels 1,500 kilometres per week, and stays overnight in Dublin at least two nights per week.

A walk in the park

“If I claimed €1 there would be people complaining about that.” Cork South West TD Noel Harrington.

“I’m at the top purely because of how far I live from Dublin. “If I claimed €1 there would be people complaining about that,” he said. Members of the Dáil are given the option of vouching for their allowances — keeping receipts of what their claim is spent on — or not doing so.

Opting to vouch results in a higher annual payment. Deputy Harrington referred to the fact that his expenses were vouched for and were last year independently audited by Mazars. “That’s a matter of public record. Everything was found to be above board,” he said.

Hook uncorked As the career of a sporting legend draws to a close, George Hook reflects on grit, determination, and the will to win. george@thecorknews.ie

I

am not myself when I’m hungry. I get grouchy and irritable and I find it difficult to focus on the most basic tasks. I am not the sort of person that can skip a meal and feel fine. In fact, I can safely say that if I didn’t have my breakfast soon after waking up, I would be a foul–tempered sour puss before very long. I will keep that in mind this Saturday afternoon when I sit down to watch the greatest jockey who ever lived saddle his horse in the Aintree Grand National for one final time. It’s highly likely that Anthony Peter McCoy hasn’t been himself for over twenty years. The man hasn’t had a decent breakfast in over two decades. In fact, most days he goes without breakfast altogether. When the last few horses cross the finish line at Aintree this weekend, the crowd will turn to salute the most successful jump jockey who has ever lived. Twenty years, twenty champion jockey titles, an honours list that includes just about every major race across Ireland and the UK: it is important to put the achievements of Tony McCoy into some sort of context. I will admit that I am not a horse racing expert. In fact, I would go as far as to suggest I pay little attention to the sport at all, save for the major festivals or the grand national. But to ignore the achievements of a man who has dominated in one of the toughest sports in the world for twenty consecutive years would be to do him and his fellow competitors a huge disservice. When people talk about the sacrifices that come with competing at the highest level in any professional or elite level sport, they refer to the countless hours of practice and dedication that go with making the grade. Each sport has its own challenges and barriers but there is something uniquely hellish

“Think of the focus and drive of the man to keep going at the top of his sport for twenty consecutive years.”

about the life of a full–time jockey. Food deprivation is not something that comes easily to yours truly, so I cannot imagine what it must be like for these men and women to go through their days without the comfort of a hearty meal to sustain them. Jockeys are never off duty. Even when the national hunt season dies off for the summer months, a jump jockey must continuously monitor and control his weight. There would be little point in a jockey finishing a season and piling on three stone in a food binge for a couple of months and then having to shed it all for the start of a new campaign. Most jockeys get very little time off anyway, so the opportunity to relax and stuff themselves doesn’t

UNREAL DEALS

really present itself. All year long they are answerable to the dreaded weighing scales. Imagine waking up every morning and before you can even brush your teeth you have to weigh up and make sure you are exactly where you need to be, to the nearest pound. Imagine sitting down to

Christmas dinner every year and munching on a stick of broccoli and half a slice of turkey while all around you gorge themselves silly. One might argue that jockeys get used to it, but I imagine continuous fasting to be on the same level as sleep deprivation: you never really get used to it.

McCoy is a warrior. Certainly he is one of the toughest, bravest and most determined sports people the world has ever seen. His list of injuries and broken bones reads like something out of a horror film. During his two decades in the saddle McCoy has broken just about every bone in his body.

He has had his teeth kicked out, suffered numerous broken collarbones, punctured lungs, broken arms, broken ribs, broken vertebrae, broken wrists and thumbs, broken legs, had countless stitches and suffered numerous concussions. Not to mention breaking all of his fingers and the amount of times he has broken his nose. Despite all of that, he has been champion jockey for every one of the last twenty years. Racing aficionados will suggest that, as far as riding style is concerned, McCoy is not as polished or as natural as the supremely talented Ruby Walsh. That may be the case, but if Walsh is in fact more naturally gifted in the saddle than his great friend and rival, it only makes McCoy’s achievements all the more impressive. McCoy’s determination and will to win will never be bettered. Think of the focus and drive of the man to keep going at the top of his sport for twenty consecutive years. There is no other sports person alive that can compare with that kind of supremacy and dominance. Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus couldn’t manage it, neither could Muhammed Ali or Roger Federer. Sport rarely provides for a fairytale ending. Brian O’Driscoll was lucky enough to end an incredible career on a supreme high, but for most, the final curtain call comes with a settlement. It would be most apt and fitting if Tony McCoy was to ride Shutthefrontdoor to victory at Aintree this weekend. But even if he doesn’t win, his place in the pantheon of all time sporting greats is already secured. I wish him well in his retirement and I salute a man who excelled despite unquantifiable sacrifices over the years. I hope, one day, that I might be lucky enough to buy him breakfast. Lord knows, he certainly deserves it.

Appeal to rent to students The Cork Institute of Technology Students’ Union has appealed for spare–room owners to rent to students. It is hoped the measure could help prevent the

of the Union of Students in Ireland, welcomed the call, highlighting the recent increase of tax allowance for rent–a–room income to €12,000.

The hospital was awarded the flag this week by An Taisce’s Green Campus programme. Cork auction house makes history An auction house established in West Cork is to make history by becoming the first Irish auctioneers ever to hold a London viewing. Due to increasing demand for Irish art, Morgan O’Driscoll Fine Art Auctioneers are to view their Irish and international art auction at La Galleria, on London’s legend-

ary Pall Mall, from Monday, April 13th to Wednesday, April 15th. The auction will include works from Louis Le Brocquy, Camille Souter and Frank McKelvey, and will also feature two Michael Flatley paintings. Founded in 1994, Morgan O’Driscoll now has offices in Dublin and Cork.

The Thatch in Lisgoold, in happier times

High hopes for Lisgoold’s Thatch It is hoped that a popular Cork bar recently destroyed by fire will soon be able to open the doors to its surviving beer garden. The Thatch bar in Lisgoold, a well–known live music venue, was devastated by fire on Sunday, April 5th at 4.30am. Now the bar’s owner Lisa Cussen is hoping to open the venue’s beer garden in time for summer, following “unbelievable” community support. “The reaction has been unbelievable: people dropping off clothes; offering to help in any way they can, calling in and picking up a shovel. “The community has been absolutely fantastic. “I still have my beer garden, and summer is coming. I just hope I can get that up and running,” she told The Cork News. Having bought the then– derelict bar in 2005, Ms Cussen put “blood, sweat and tears” into the pub over the last decade.

“The community has been absolutely fantastic.”

“It was my baby; it was the hub of the community. It made the village so beautiful. “I was out fishing with a 91– year–old local man — he had his 90th in the bar. He said ‘this time last week we were sitting out admiring the bar, now we’re inconsolable,’” she continued. Work continues on the pub, and Ms Cussen has appealed to anyone who can lend advice or help to call to the bar on 021 464 2145.

“I said yes when my grandson offered me one of his favourite toffees. It was then I noticed the huge difference Smile Store - The Dental Specialists had made correcting my ill-fitting dentures. I was so limited in diet and had to cut every morsel of food to avoid the embarrassment of my teeth falling out, particularly in company. Smile Store anchored my dentures in place with a comfortable, very affordable, implant treatment. I'm really delighted with the results, if a little sweet-toothed!"

2,500km life–saving cycle for Pam An inspirational Cork woman is planning an epic cycle around the Irish coast from Kinsale to Derry, aiming to raise €100,000 for Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children International, at 70 years of age. “I feel so blessed to have good health at almost 70, plus a wonderful life in one of the most beautiful places in the world with incredibly kind and caring people,” said Pam Norris. “I feel that I must use these gifts to the best of my ability to help those less fortunate, especially the very young and helpless.”

“If untreated, one in three will die by the age of five.” Pam’s 2,500km trek around Ireland will provide a huge boost for the charity’s cardiac missions to Ukraine and Belarus, where thousands of children are born every year with a genetic defect called ‘Chernobyl heart’, caused by radiation from the nuclear disaster in 1986.

“If untreated, one in three will die by the age of five,” Pam notes. A flying doctors programme, initiated by Chernobyl Children International, sees teams of surgeons volunteer to fly in to carry out life–saving operations on the most critically ill children and also to train local medics in how best to care for them. So far, 6,500 young lives have been saved in this fashion, but the problem will continue for many years to come. Pam is hoping to publicise the Wild Atlantic Way, which begins in Kinsale, as well as raising money for the operations, and thereby enlist the help of business and hotels along the route. She has already started fun-

draising locally, raffling works donated by local artists including Dee Pieters and Sara Roberts. Tech–savvy Pam has praised the “wonderful, practical support” she’s had from the people of Kinsale and thanked people for communicating with her via Facebook in support of her undertaking, though she has admitted she’s not too keen on cycling in the rain and will take shelter if the weather becomes too capricious. However, she has bought a new bike to make things a little easier: “It’s got 27 gears!” she exclaimed delightedly, “and it eats up the hills!” To learn more or to support Pam, visit facebook.com/pages/Cyclingfor-Baby-Hearts/.

Robotic ants invading Cork A mad scientist is threatening to send Cork back to the stone age. Robotic alien ants are descending upon the city. In a world ruled by robots the last man standing is completely out of luck on dating websites, but at least he has Prendebot to listen to in the mornings. Don’t worry, The Cork News writing staff is no madder than usual: these are plots from stories to be found in a Cork– based science fiction comic from Cork Comic Creators and Cork City Library. The comic, featuring tales from the future, superheroes,

jetpacks, robots, spaceships and a glimpse of Patrick Street as you’ve never seen it before, is an anthology of the work of nearly a dozen writers and artists from Cork spanning five separate stories. The comic will be launched next Friday, April 24th, at the Cork World Book Festival alongside workshops from Judge Dredd writer and artists Michael Carroll and Eoin Coveney. The local artists involved are Eugene Darcy, Kevin Keane, Hayley Mulcahy, John Quigley and Rob Anthon, working with writers Dylan Fitzgerald, Sean Creagh, Niall Best, Shane Ormond and Emmet O’Brien.

A retired Canadian astronaut who shot to fame worldwide with an historic documentarian stay in the International Space Station is to touch down in Cork this weekend. Commander Chris Hadfield, who endeared himself to Ireland with the first tweet as Gaeilge from space, will be here to sign copies of his two books, You Are Here and An Astronaut’s Guide to Life, at Eason’s on

Patrick Street tomorrow, Saturday from 3pm to 5pm. Arguably the most famous and iconic astronaut since Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, the Canadian officer popularised space exploration for an entire generation with his fascinating experiments and storytelling instincts while he commanded the ISS from December 2012 to May 2013. Over 1,000,000 people fol-

lowed his exploits on Twitter, he is the first person to have recorded a song — Jewel In The Night — in space, and his weightless acoustic performance of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, with Bowie’s blessing, garnered 24,000,000 views on YouTube. His photographs of Ireland from orbit have become almost as iconic as his statement, from his vantage point overhead: Tá Éire fíorálainn.

Seminars at Nimbus Centre Free seminars are to be held at a Cork research centre covering a variety of topics such as business, technology, health and innovation. The Nimbus Centre at Cork Institute of Technology is running three seminars this month, com-

Daytripper Catherine Mahon–Buckley is the artistic director of CADA and director of Les Miserables at the Firkin Crane. She lives in Knockraha with her husband Ted. Les Miserables runs until tomorrow, Saturday with tickets available at firkincrane.ie.

My alarm goes off at 6am and I’m up like a shot. I tend to wake throughout the night. Something might pop into my head, or I’d put the telly on for 10 minutes to settle. My husband Ted says that when he dies, his hand will be over his face because that’s how he’s always slept! My first thought is the day’s plan, and I list out everything that needs to be done. I try to get in 30 minutes of exercise at David Sisk Fitness in Mount Oval or Educogym. I’m not trying to be an Olympic runner, but just keep standing. If I’m at home, I shower, and then do the face. I’m big into my appearance. Breakfast is sugarless muesli with blueberries and natural yoghurt. My day varies, and with the ‘get–in’ to something like Les Misérables it’s two sessions a day, for five hours each. On the day of the show, we’d have one session from 10am to 2pm, and then back again at 6pm. The lead–up is the most exciting time for a director, and seeing the set for the first time is like being a child with a new toy. But when the set is dismantled, it’s almost like being a child and putting your fist through it! I was always involved in music and literature because of my parents. As a child I loved Shakespeare. My father was a trumpeter, while my mother was a dress designer. I was also fortunate to have Eileen Nolan as my teacher. My parents said they didn’t have a problem with me performing, once I could make a living. Now, a ‘living’ doesn’t mean having absolute luxury — there’s a richness in other things, not just the material. At the end of the day, a chair is a chair. My work has given me a fantastic life, but a hard one as well. I wouldn’t pick it for somebody. I always say, follow your dreams, but be realistic. I truly believe that if something’s meant to be, it won’t

pass you by. There’s a lovely saying that friends come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. For me, Ted is my soulmate, but when we first met I couldn’t stand him! A friend of mine had a date at The Bulman in Kinsale and persuaded me to come. Meeting Ted, I couldn’t believe someone could be that quiet and say nothing and he couldn’t believe I could be that vivacious and keep talking! He asked me out on dates and I was always breaking them but now, I’ll put up my hands and say, what I have today is because of him. He’s an accountant, so I can ask him, ‘can I do a b or c?’ and he says ‘yes’ or ‘no, you don’t have the money’. At end of the day, I have to see the bigger picture, the future. I’m a bit mad in a sense, as I’m constantly wondering what I should do next. I did a course in Maynooth and I

remember someone saying to me, ‘why are you doing that? You could teach the course’. Typical me, I went in with that sort of obnoxiousness, thinking ‘yeah, of course I could give the course’. I submitted my first assignment and the man barely passed me. When I came home, I said to Ted, ‘does he not know who I am?’ to which Ted replied, ‘he does actually, you’re 49240 (my college number) and if you don’t change your attitude, then give up. You’re

not going to learn anything’. I totally changed after that and went to do a MA in Drumcondra and now I’m trying to finish a PhD. That’s on the back burner more often than anything, so I need to take a step back to finish it. I’m a bit of a workaholic, something I have to balance. I could work 18 hours a day. I’m lucky I live off very little sleep, but having said that, I need to start listening to my body more. I got a great shock when I was diagnosed with cancer.

Before, I could never understand people being diagnosed with something and given just months to live. They must have felt something. Perhaps that’s a message God wanted to send me, as I never had symptoms. I went in for a smear test, which didn’t show anything, and I mentioned a slight bleed mid–cycle. My doctor referred me to a consultant who looked at me and said something along the lines of ‘with your age, and your weight — but you’ve

a beautiful face — you’re a prime candidate for cancer’. I wasn’t sure if she insulted or complimented me! However, I was told it all seemed fine until a few days later Ted got a call to say the gynaecologist wanted to see me immediately. I thought it was a joke but I found out I needed three organs removed. I think my time wasn’t up. I’m thankful to the people who were there for me, even though I made it tough. I told my consultant that as she didn’t have enough patients because of the recession she saw me with my VHI and thought ‘whoopee, you’re going to have an operation’. She nearly had to sit down with the shock, but I did apologise afterwards. While, I’m a private person, I hope if another woman picks up on what I’ve said and does something about it, then it was worth saying. I firmly believe we’ve four parts to us — the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical — and they all need to be minded. At home, I’m into natural foods. At the moment, whatever I cook the night before — maybe a chicken stew — I’ll bring in two cartoons the next day for our stage manager and myself. If I don’t, I fall into a trap of gravitating to fast food. I was watching Ireland AM last week and the chef made a raw lasagne, using a dehydrator to remove water from the food, but not the nutrients. That’s interesting and I do love vegetarian food. At one stage I thought I was going to be the greatest chef of all time, and I watch Come Dine with Me in the evenings to relax. Other times, I’ll turn on Judge Judy, which brings me back to my love of Shakespeare and getting to the core of how people think. I suppose my philosophy is that at the end of the day, I mightn’t get it right all of the time...but that’s fantastic because I’m human.”

Extinction of a 200-year-old industry

A documentary on the extinction of the Cape Clear fishing industry will be shown at the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival in May. Produced by Jason Gaffney, Aonrú studies the decline of the 200–year–old fishing industry of the island Gaeltacht, and its inhabitants’ fears for the future. “Their fears are very real. Mr Gaffney interviewed Conor O’Driscoll, the last full–time fisherman on the island, whose boat The Atlantic Freedom was taken off the seas in January 2015 due to storm damage. Mizen Community Partnership A partnership aiming to secure development, investment and expansion in west Cork is to be launched on Thursday, April 16th in the Mizen Head visitor centre. The new Mizen Community Partnership will also release the Integrated Strategic Local Development Plan for the Mizen Peninsula, and are calling on those concerned for the community’s future to attend. Commissioned by the West

Cork Development Partnership, the report identifies three areas — brand, food, and heritage — to develop across the three Mizen community councils: Goleen, Schull and Ballydehob. It is hoped the partnership will develop the Mizen Peninsula brand, encourage the expansion of local food producers, and prioritise the area’s historical heritage. Mr Ian Dempsey, CEO of the West Cork Development

Partnership, will launch the initiative at the event, set to be attended by members of the tourist industry, government agencies, local businesses and entrepreneurs. “We are looking forward to this exciting event and hope that this initiative will have a great impact on the lives of the many people who call Mizen Peninsula their home and workplace,” said a Mizen Community Partnership spokesperson.

Mr Holland, a graduate architect at Cork firm Fourem, began work on Open House Cork — a series of free public events highlighting the city’s often–overlooked architectural heritage — having been inspired by similar events which have taken place in London, Limerick and Dublin. Working on the project with a committee of 15 people for the last year, Mr Holland hopes the festival’s programme will make Cork City’s architecture more accessible to its people. “Sometimes architecture is only appreciated by students, or those working in the industry. “We thought the festival would be a great way of allowing people to join the discussion,” he told The Cork News. According to Mr Holland, a highlight of the festival, which opens tonight, is a guided tour around Cork’s Docklands: “There’s such a sense of history there, and a brilliant mix of the unusual and the functional. “We’ll be taking people around the old Ford factory, which is

dence “ of the city will be highlighted during the festival, with the best of Cork buildings, both new and historic, said Mr Holland: “The built environment in Cork has been rich and diverse for so long, with the history of people commissioning high– quality architecture in the city carried on by the likes of CIT and more.” Open House Cork launches at 5.30pm tonight, Friday, April 10th at the Vision Centre on North Main Street and runs to Sunday, April 12th. UCC courses shortlisted for national awards A unique UCC course delivered in west Cork – the only one of its kind in Europe – has been shortlisted for two major Irish awards. The Master of Science in Organic Horticulture has been shortlisted for Postgraduate Course of the Year (Science) and Best New Course at the annual Postgraduate Course of the Year Awards. Established in 1992, the course is delivered at a teaching and research base just outside Skibbereen.

The programme aims to provide students with the scientific principles and practical applications of organic horticulture. Meanwhile, UCC’s Master of Science in Information Systems for Business Performance has been shortlisted for Best IT Course and Best Business Course. Applications are now open for the September intake of the MSc Organic Horticulture. For more information, see cohr.ucc.ie.

‘I just don’t want it to end’

Oh they’ve got high hopes

Sheehy prepares for The Voice quarter finals By Maria Tracey maria@thecorknews.ie

Cork’s last performer in The Voice of Ireland has revealed he is “humbled” to be part of the RTÉ One show. John Sheehy (28), a yoga instructor originally from Carrignavar but now living in the city, said it’s an “amazing feeling” being in the quarter finals, singing Hold Back the River by James Bay on the show this Sunday at 6.30pm. “The talent left in the competition is incredible and it’s humbling to be part of that group,” he said. “Being the last Leesider in the competition brings with it an extra emphasis as I am Cork through and through, I can’t count the amount of times I have been supporting Cork GAA, Cork City FC along with anything Cork. It’s surreal to be seen as representing the Rebel County in the show and all the messages from the people of Cork have been mind blowing.” John told The Cork News the comments after his last performance have given him the “in-

“It’s surreal to be seen as representing the Rebel County.” spiration to improve and progress in the competition as far as possible”. “Above everything else I love being on the stage and the minute I was off last week I just wanted to get back on,” he said,

adding he is “incredibly excited” for this week’s performance. John explained the James Bay number is “incredible” both “lyrically and melodically”. “It’s a song I can really attach to emotionally, so hopefully that will shine through in the performance. It’s also nice to sing a song by a male vocalist too,” he laughed. “There are some real fun and shocking performances to come so hopefully the public will put me through so I can perform them,” he continued. “It’s been incredible and I just don’t want it to end.”

Cork urged to go orange Cork is being asked to rally behind three terminally ill Roscommon brothers by wearing orange at the start of May. Wear Orange Day on Friday, May 1st is to raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a condition affecting nine–year–old Archie Naughton and his brothers, twins George and Isaac, who turn five next month (above). Currently there is no treat-

ment or cure for DMD and the diagnosis means the children are unlikely to live beyond their late teens or early 20s. The Join our Boys Trust has been established to help provide funds to find a treatment for all children diagnosed with this catastrophic disease. Along with wearing orange, it’s also asked people donate €2, or whatever they can to the trust, at joinourboys.org.

Return of 100–year–old literary journal A 100–year–old literary journal is to be re–launched with new writing and featuring artwork from a famed Wall Street Journal illustrator. The newly revived UCC literary journal Quarryman will be launched at the close of the Cork World Book Fest on Saturday, April 25th at 9pm in the Triskel Arts Centre. The journal was produced intermittently

from the 1920s to the 1980s, featuring many well–known poets, and its revitalised form will be re–launched by the inaugural class of the MA in Creative Writing. The cover is illustrated by award–winning artist Kevin Sprouls, creator of the iconic Wall Street Journal portrait style known as hedcut. His daughter Bridget attended the UCC

course last year and has submitted poetry to the anthology. The publication will encompass poetry and fiction submitted by the class, as well as contributions by poets Greg Delanty, William Wall, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and Gerry Murphy. Booker–nominated author Donal Ryan stated Quarryman is a “perfect

reading excursion”. “Its pages inhabited by cyber–stalkers, bereft lovers, dying crows, webless spiders, disillusioned radicals, illicit cadavers, and people treading the uncertain pathways of life, love and loss negotiating the treacherous terrain of existence,” he said. “It’s a wonderful collection of works and a triumphant return for Quarryman.”

Local model signs for IMG A Cork model has signed by the same agency the represents supermodels Kate Moss and Rosie Huntington–Whitely. Eighteen–year– old Clara McSweeney (pictured) from Kilmurry has signed for IMG Models, after being discovered at an Andrea Roche Model Agency open day three years ago. Speaking to The Cork News back in 2012, a then 15–year– old Clara revealed she was “shocked” at the time with the publicity she has received. “People are calling me the ‘next Kate Moss’, which I don’t like so much,” she said. “It’s not great being compared to someone else. At the start it was grand but then people kept saying it and all I’m thinking is ‘I’m me!’. I don’t think we look

Gardaí are seeking the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of 54–year–old Dublin woman who last contacted her family in January and is believed to have spent time in Cork in the interim. Sylvia Walsh, originally from Whitehall in Dublin but more recently living in the Foxrock/ Blackrock area of Dublin, last made contact with her family on Monday, January 12th and it is thought she was in the Cork city area as recently as last month. She is described as being 5’3”/5’4” in height, thin build with fair/brown coloured hair. Anyone who has seen Sylvia or who can assist in locating her is asked to contact Dun Laoghaire Garda Station at 01 666 5000 or Anglesea Garda Station at 021 452 2000.

Paws for thought

Talk to us

Every week, Cork's animal shelters are called upon to take care of our city's injured, abandoned and unwanted animals. After veterinary treatment and plenty of TLC, these rescued cats and dogs are ready to start a new life with a loving owner. If you have the budget, time, space and commitment to welcome an animal into your home, adopting a rescue animal might be the right option for you. Meet this week's furry friends of The Cork News...

We want to hear from you! Email your thoughts, comments, reactions and announcements to editor@thecorknews.ie

Ranger the Weimereiner

Ranger is about five years old, and loves to run and play fetch. Ranger would prefer to be the only dog in a house, as sometimes he isn’t great at sharing. He needs to be kept busy and doesn’t like to be left alone for long. Ranger will make the right person or couple a very loyal companion, and his striking looks complement his bright personality!

Rio the Malinois

Rio is energetic with a sweet nature and is very inquisitive! She’s looking for a home with an enclosed garden that she cannot escape from, and an active household where she gets plenty of exercise. Rio is very intelligent and learns quickly, loves her walks and is very eager to please. Rio loves other dogs and belly rubs but needs to be around older children only. Because of her intellect and energy, she needs a firm and experienced master or mistress.

Elvis the Collie

Elvis is a very sweet boy who is very shy, but he is improving, though he still has some way to go. He now can be left off in the run and sits down to be leaded up, and compared to how he was when he first came in he walks with his tail held up high. Elvis is better with female dogs, and would do well with children in late teens or an adult home only as he is still very nervous and not used to younger children.

Yes, Yes, Yes. Dear Editor, The Yes Equality Cork Campaign for Civil Marriage Equality continues apace. Our sole concern is with securing the right to Equal Civil Marriage for lesbian and gay people in Ireland. Civil marriage is not the same as religious marriage. Religious marriage is a ceremony performed in a church, followed by the signing of the civil marriage register, the legally binding part of the ceremony. In contrast, a civil marriage takes place in a registry office or other approved venue. A civil marriage has nothing to do with religion. Patsy McGarry has noted that marriage has generally been a civil matter and was so also for much of the history of Christianity. As the retired Church of Ireland archdeacon of Dublin Gordon Linney has recently said: “Personally, I think the claim of the churches to own

marriage in any sense just doesn’t stand up because marriage was there long, long before there was ever a Christian church and was ‘a civil matter’.” For supporters of Civil Marriage Equality, Marriage represents the ultimate expression of love and commitment between two people Marriage also offers a secure foundation for loving and committed couples and their children, if any. From this the wider society also benefits, in terms of greater social cohesion. Thus, a Yes vote in the forthcoming Civil Marriage Equality Referendum on Friday 22nd May 2015 will mean saying Yes to marriage, Yes to equality and Yes to strengthening Irish society. Yours sincerely, Dr. Margaret O’Keeffe LLM Yes Equality Cork Campaign 66 Ashmount Silversprings Mayfield

Good without God Dear Editor, In response to your editorial last week (April 3rd) and as a practicing Catholic in her 60s, I want to say I couldn’t agree more. It’s ridiculous in this day and age that multicultural Ireland is still imposing the view of any religion on all the people, especially as we have more denominations here now and more people who are atheists and agnostics. Let re-

ligious people have the courage of their convictions by not expecting everyone to follow our rules! We should lead by example and if that means supporting Gay Marriage or letting our neighbours have a drink on Good Friday then so be it! Love the paper, Peggy Hartnett Ringaskiddy

Moderne times

10 April 2015

The Moderne has been a mainstay of shopping in Cork since the early 20th century. Tomás Kavanagh stops by to see how the business has evolved.

T

he Moderne has been an integral part of Cork for over a century now, and its ‘traditional’ home, right in the middle of Patrick Street, has been a landmark and a meeting place for generations of friends and lovers Leeside. It was the end of an era when the distinctive building at the corner of Patrick Street and French Church Street shut its doors in January of 2014 — the massive edifice is currently undergoing a significant revamp — but for the business it housed, the cloud was laced with silver linings. As the fourth generation of the O’Dowling family takes up the torch — Ciara O’Dowling’s great grandmother founded the family business on the Grand Parade in 1913 and she’s the latest in the family to be part of the Moderne clan — the business continues apace, and has diversified in recent years. Mary O’Dowling, Ciara’s mother, thinks fast and talks fast. Notably absent are the standard “umm” and “uhh”

and “ahm” markers most of us use when we’re answering questions to give our brains time to form a coherent answer. There’s none of that as I talk to her, standing in the bright, spacious ground floor

of one of the old Moderne’s three latter–day ‘children’, Moderne Bridal, opposite the gable of the original at 13 and 14 French Church Street. She had been the guiding hand behind the bridal section of

the Moderne in its previous incarnation too, though she readily admits that it occasionally got a little lonely at the back of the huge store. “The move has really benefitted my bridal business,” she says, looking around with undisguised satisfaction at the stock, the staff and the browsers, bustling off occasionally to make sure customers are well looked after and questions besides my own are answered. Not alone has the Moderne diversified (it’s split into three separate shops; two on Cook Street and this one), but her end of the business

“At McCarthy’s, we won’t make a Drama out of your crisis, when it comes to a claim.”

“These days, really, if you want to survive you have to specialise.” now caters for bridesmaids and debs–dress hunters as well as the brides themselves.

There’s another specialised spin–off — a ‘mother of the bride’ shop — on the way very soon at Lavitt’s Quay too, and I sense a certain amount of satisfaction that the little solar system of Moderne shops remains clustered around the city centre. “It’ll open in the summer,” she tells me, and then I see a quick re–calculation happening and she weighs up what needs to be done between now and then. “Maybe after the summer…” she concedes. The breakup of the mothership into three — and shortly four — satellites was a huge

Cramming 150 horses into a tiny body is a recipe for fun, as Seán Creedon finds out behind the wheel of the VW Polo Blue GT

task. Mary winces ever so slightly as she remembers clearing out “the big shop” in January of last year. “It was in the middle of the bridal season,” she recalls, with a slight “how did we manage that?” shake of her head. “But it’s been great, it really has. We’re thrilled with the move. We’d been thinking about it for a while: we expanded in the middle of the Celtic Tiger — doubled in size, in fact — but along with that went very high rates. Of couse it was tough to leave the family building, but it’s going very well. We’re very happy!” I note that the

customers seem to be, too. The weather is radiant, which always helps, but the French quarter of the city centre has come to life in recent years like a desert after a storm. It’s full of boutiques, coffee shops, great restaurants and quirky little businesses, and Moderne Bridal fits right in. Sunburnt teenagers are milling around, excitedly hopping from one rail to another. Debs season is beginning, Mary explains, and Moderne Bridal has taken to the debs market in a big way. “These days, really, if you want to survive you have to specialise.”

That philosophy’s done well for the O’Dowling clan, and Mary’s husband Ross — Ellen Dowling’s grandson (the women in the family didn’t take the “O”) — looks after the fashion side of things over on Cook Street. General fashion is even more challenging than a specialist market like brides, or bridesmaids, or mothers of brides or debutantes, but as Mary points out, when it comes to fashion and her family, “it’s in the blood” and the idea of shirking a little hard work is, I get the sense, anathema. Thousands of miles are travelled every year — if not every month — to the continent to seek out the latest looks. Cook Street also has the most fascinating, to me, at any rate, of the Moderne’s children, the dancewear shop. “Both my children studied ballet and it was impossible — impossible! — to get outfits, so the ballet shop started in the Moderne as it was,” Mary highlights. Given ballet’s long and illustrious pedigree in Cork it seems like an obvious idea, but of course if good ideas really were obvious then everyone would have them. With more than a century of serving Cork’s fashion needs, four generations of business brains (Ciara has taken to it like a fish to water, says her mother, who hopes to watch her graduate from college with even more business and marketing acumen than she already possesses) and more than two dozen staff across a range of different shops, The Moderne Family has continued to play a central role in Cork’s business and fashion life. Even the move went well, and customers had no difficulty making their way to the old shop’s nearby progeny thanks to word of mouth, proximity and helpful decals at the front of the Patrick Street premises. Nearly a year and a half on, the O’Dowling clan haven’t just caught up with themselves, they’ve taken wing with a whole new chapter in the history of a genuine piece of Cork’s unique personality.

The business of bonding “Modern living” has made the never–really–easy process of meeting a potential love interest even more difficult for professionals in Cork, who rarely have the time to set aside for socialising anymore. Any gap in a market will eventually see the evolution of new ways of doing things, and the dating game has been no different. Online dating is now very much the done thing for busy people on the go. Two’s Company has taken a slightly different tack to many of their counterparts with a strong emphasis on working with people locally. They’re now the largest company of their kind in Ireland, with a particularly large membership around Cork. Founder Jennifer Haskins says Two’s Company is the culmination of years of research into the scene here, prividing a more discerning alternative to online dating in Cork. “It is our objective to ensure that our members make friends and meet people of simlar character, values, and intellect, to hopefully find love

and meet their soul mate,” she highlights. The first four months of the year have seen 12 engagements for couples who met through

Two’s Company, so if you’re in the market for a return to the dating game see what makes them different at twoscompany. ie.

Get your head in the cloud Failure to embrace cloud technology has put small firms in Cork at a competitive disadvantage compared to Dublin companies, a new SME survey has revealed. Research by Amárach of 600 SMEs conducted on behalf of telecoms provider Magnet shows that just a quarter of small firms in Cork say they have implemented a cloud solution of some kind for their business, compared to 45% in Dublin. Almost 80% of SMEs in the southern region are still using and paying for a conventional phone system, which according to Amárach research could be costing small business in Ireland over €266m per year. Also in Dublin, 43% of employees of small firms have access to com-

pany data via their smartphone, while this falls to just 21% in the case of firms in Cork. “Staff in companies outside Dublin tend to work from home more and spend more

time in their cars, so they are missing an obvious opportunity to work smarter. The very companies that need the technology aren’t availing of it,” stated Mark Kellett, CEO of Magnet.

ilkenny Café @ Shanagarry Design Centre under head chef Fred Pillavoine claimed the ‘Best Restaurant in East Cork’ for 2015 at the recent Chernobyl Childrens Trust ‘It’s All About the Food’ Awards, and to celebrate the occasion we’re sharing some of his award–winning recipes: this week, it’s a rich chocolate, orange and almond simnel cake...definitely not ont to be recommended if you’re watching your waistline!

Ingredients • 250g butter • 100g plain chocolate • 400g plain flour • 500g golden caster sugar • 25g cocoa powder • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 2 eggs • 280ml buttermilk • Zest and juice of one orange For the marzipan • 85g golden caster sugar • 100g icing sugar • 200g ground almonds • 50g cocoa powder • One egg, one yolk, beaten For the frosting • 2x250g tubs of mascarpone • 250g soft butter • 250g icing sugar

• Zest of 2 oranges • 100ml orange juice Method 1. Preheat the oven at 180ºC/160ºC fan oven. Grease and line two 23cm cake tins and boil your kettle. 2. Put the butter and chocolate in a small saucepan and gently heat till melted, stirring constantly. 3. Mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa and bicarbonate of soda in a large mixing bowl. 4. In a separate jug, whisk the eggs, buttermilk, orange zest and juice until

the mixture is light and fluffy. 5. Pour the chocolate mixture and egg mixture into the dry ingredients. Add 150ml boiling water and whiz briefly with an electric mixer until lump free. 6. Divide the mixture between the two tins and bake for about 45min or till a skewer inserted comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in their tins. 7. Meanwhile, make the marzipan! Mix the sugar, ground almonds and cocoa in a bowl, making a

well in the middle of the mix. 8. Tip the egg and yolk and mix with a cutlery knife before kneading with your hands to form a smooth ball. Wrap in cling film and set aside. 9. For the frosting, beat the mascarpone and butter together till smooth. Sift in the icing sugar, add orange zest and juice and beat till combined. 10. To assemble, split each sponge in half horizontally and sandwich each layer with frosting, keeping 1/3 of the icing for the top and side.

11. Once assembled, cover the top of the cake with a little frosting. 12. Roll out the marzipan on a dusting of cocoa and, using one of the cake tins as cutter, cut a circle. 13. C arefully lift it onto the top of the cake. 14. Roll the remaining marzipan into 12 balls and sit them on top of the cake, using frosting or water as glue. 15. Spread the remaining frosting around the outside of the cake, then dust the top with cocoa and icing sugar.

Lamb it up This is the perfect time of the year for lamb, but don’t think that you have to stick to the tried–and– tested ‘roast it and slather on some mint sauce’, though there’s absolutely nothing at all wrong with that. Lamb lends itself to accompaniment by anything minty or citric, and instead of roasting a joint, consider slow cooking lamb shanks. They’re cheap because they’re not popular, not because they’re not delicious: a long, slow cook at low temperature and the meat will fall off the bones, as the cooking liquid becomes a perfect gravy. Add garlic, dill, fennel, mint and lemon juice at the start to really maximise the flavour, and afterwards use the gravy and bones as a base for a delicious stock.

Don’t stay an April fool A combination of stunning weather, a long weekend, several easter eggs and perhaps a little too much to drink has left most of us slightly larger around the equator than we were during Lent. Never fear, this is the perfect time of year for a post–splurge ‘detox’ and a great time to gain some new healthy habits as sum-

mer approaches. To gain a few inches of your belt, and possibly some of your self respect, back, try these simple dietary measures: • Clear out your cupboards. Wintery comfort foods have had their chance. Get rid of them as spring takes off. Clear out any

processed, fattening, salty, sugary snacks and convenience food. • Buy fruit and veg in as much variety as possible and make it a point to eat some morning and evening. You won’t be long realising how delicious it is. • For the chillier days and nights (they haven’t gone

away, you know), use those veg for filling, nutritious, economical soup. • The weather is getting warmer, so now’s a good time to get into a great habit: water, water, water. You ought to drink between two and three litres a day, and that’s apart from tea and coffee.

Keep it smooth Smoothies and juices are a great way to ensure that you get your five a day, and they’re delicious, healthy and convenient. Whether you’re using an expensive smoothie maker, a regular blender, or even a hand blender (make your smoothie in a large plastic jug if so, and be prepred for a little inevitable splattering), they’re quick and easy to make.

Breakfast smoothie:

Full of slow–energy goodness to keep you ticking over all day long, there’s eating and drinking in this one! Soak a few spoons of oats in fat free milk overnight, then add to frozen yoghurt, two cups of fat–free milk, a banana, a few sultanas, a decent splodge of honey and a spoonful of smooth peanut butter, and whizz them all up together, adding more milk if

kk cork news advert 50x265mm march 2015 final.indd 1

it’s a little too thick. You’ll be good to go until lunch.

On–the–go slushie:

Ice, two carrots, a glass of orange juice, a banana, some pineapple and a shot of grapefruit juice. A quick zap for your tastebuds and a major boost for your ‘get up and go’, take this to work and pop it in the fridge; perfect for your mid morning slump.

Big green boost:

Wheatgrass, kale, broccoli, juice of one large lime, two kiwis, an apple, baby spinach and spirulina (available from health food shops). A sharp–tasting smoothie bursting with B vitamins, iron and other minerals, this is fantastic for a pick–me–up after a heavy weekend or if you feel like your immune system might need a hand.

ew proposals governing parental leave, announced this week, have been praised by parent support groups and advocates of increased paternal leave. If the government takes up the proposals of its own special advisory group,

it will mean that parents will be entitled to 12 months of shared, paid parental leave. The new plans would allow new mothers and fathers to split up to 52 weeks of leave from work between them in any way they like, including sharing 26 weeks off together to get to know their new baby.

The new plan has been strongly influenced by research which shows that children do best if they spend at least the first year of their lives in the care of their parents, as opposed to creches, nannies or even grandparents. There is no guarantee that the one–year plan will be

signed into law, but advocacy groups have given the recommendations a cautious welcome. Even if the plans are signed into law by this (or the next) government in the coming years, it would still take about five years to ensure that systems are in place to deal with the new legislation.

Cork since 2003 and provides emotional support for cancer patients and their families from all over Munster. Cork ARC will be opening services in Knocknaheeny and Bantry this month. The charity has also launched a new website at corkcancersupport.ie.

Along the jagged edge in Crosshaven This Saturday, April 11th, will see the launch a new addition to the the Jagged Edge Tour in Crosshaven, which takes place every year for Breakthrough Cancer Research: a new family fun cycle from Crosshaven to Carrigaline and back, over a distance of 12km. The Jagged Edge event consists of three different routes, all starting in Crosshaven Village. There’s the 130km Pain route, the 65km Pleasure route and from tomorrow, the 12km Family Fun route. These routes offer cyclists an opportunity to test themselves while taking in some beautiful scenery around the South Cork Coast. Depending on whether you fancy pain or pleasure (or

a nice day out with the family), you can see Myrtleville, Fountainstown, Robertscove, Oysterhaven and Kinsale. Helping launch the Jagged Edge Tour, Fiona Meade, Ireland’s elite women’s national road race champion said “The Jagged Edge tour is a fantastic idea, because not only are we lending our support to a great cause in Cancer Research but this great event offers different routes for people at varying levels in their cycling along with offering a family friendly cycle also. There really is something for everyone.” For full details and online registration visit jaggededgetour.com or call 021 422 66 55.

Shine on for Autism Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability. It’s not the case that more and more children are developing autism nowadays, but rather that we’re getting better and better at detecting disorders along what’s called the ‘autism spectrum’ in children. The latest research from the US now shows that autism can affect as many as 1 in 68 children. Autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function, but Cork’s SHINE Centre for Autism has launched a new app designed to teach children and adolescents with autism the skills necessary to cope social situations, a skill which austistic disorders can make very difficult. After much campaigning and wrangling, the Department of Education will finally will be amending policies on admissions to schools. The new policies will be more fair, equal, open and transparent and will limit schools’ opportunities to discriminate on grounds of gender, civil status, sexual orientation, religion, family status, educational need, disability, race or membership of the Traveller community. The new legislation will also codify parents’ rights (and children’s rights) to refuse religious instruction at school by ensuring that schools will have to be more explicit about their policies in this regard, though denominational schools will still be entitled to give preference to children who are nominally members of the same denomination. One of the major changes

comes in how schools can treat the children of past pupils, which has long been a bugbear of parents in a more interconnected Ireland, where fewer and fewer parents are raising children in the same locales where they grew up themselves. Education minister Jan O’Sullivan has indicated that her preference would be for about 10% ‘reserved’ places; significantly less than the 25% proposed by her predecessor in the office, Ruairí Quinn. Her stance has been praised by Travellers’ rights and immigrants’ rights groups. The bill will be put together over the summer, which means it probably won’t be in effect for the 2015/2016 school year, though Minister O’Sullivan has indicated she’d like to see the changes made by then.

Benefits of laser hair removal Shades of grey Perhaps one of the more surprising beauty trends at the moment is grey hair, so make a statement and embrace your inner silver fox.

YOGA POSE OF THE WEEK

T

he sun has been waking from its winter hibernation with a vengeance in recent days, reminding us that revealing clothing is on the way. For most of us this also means razor nicks and red bumps in

the quest for smooth and gorgeous legs and underarms. If that sounds familiar, choosing laser could be an option. It means fewer ingrown hairs, as the laser targets hair deep within its follicle leading to smooth silky skin, and is great for those with busy lifestyles,

Smell the fleurs Roger & Gallet have launched their first ever Eau de Parfum, Fleur de Figuier. The result is a sensual, all enveloping, sweet and luscious freshness; reminiscent of those seemingly endless, warm Mediterranean summers by the shores of the Esterel, in the south of France. We can just imagine it now! It’s €49 from Marks & Spencer and selected pharmacies.

with less time spent shaving. Laser hair removal can also make a life–changing difference for women who have a chronic problem with unwanted facial or forearm hair, men who constantly get ingrown hairs around their neck area, and athletes who

Super Slimming Weight Loss Tea Causes a Stir! Yes, it’s really true folks.... an ancient Chinese Lotus Leaf tea or Yo Chi Tea as it is known, is becoming a global sensation! You see, this is simply no ordinary tea; far from it in fact, this is an amazing revolutionary tea blend which, because of its ancient Chinese herbal properties, is helping people everywhere to shed excess weight quickly, naturally and safely, simply by drinking two cups of it every day. Weight loss and detox could not be any easier than this, ever! Already, everyone wants to get their hands on this natural miracle worker and let’s face it why wouldn’t they? Already, J-Lo is singing its praises (sorry, we couldn’t resist that little pun!), blissfully sipping it till her heart’s content as she marvels at its benefits in terms of weight loss. Oprah too is a firm believer

in it so if it is good enough for two of the world’s biggest showbiz celebs, we are pretty sure it is more than just a little bit good! The good news? Yo Chi is available in Ireland, exclusive to Therapie Clinic. Clinics have reported waiting list around the country as Therapie have been struggling to meet the demand for tea both in store and online with many customers eager to aid new year weight loss using a more holistic approach. Commenting on its arrival at Therapie Clinic, Manager Jennifer O’Donovan said: “The response to Yo Chi Tea so far has been fantastic, it’s flying off the shelves! The great thing about Yo Chi Tea is it’s 100% natural, and has been proven to be effective in aiding weight loss and detox in a easy, safe way”

The blend contains Lotus Leaf, Oolong green tea and number of other ancient Chinese herbs, all of which have been specially selected because of their proven natural ability to purify and cleanse the body, and to essentially act as a nuisance in stopping the body from storing up food as excess weight, and burn excess fat which is stored in the body! Drinking just two cups of lotus leaf Yo Chi weight loss tea a day over a 14 day period will help to increase weight loss by up to 50%! Yo Chi Tea is exclusively available from Therapie Clinic nationwide, including 17B Opera Lane in Cork. Simply call them direct on 021 427 8736, to find out more or to order. For more information on Yo Chi tea and the 14 day detox you can visit www.yochitea.com.

Going Places 10 April 2015

It’s my kind of town

I

have heard about folks from the US’s Mid–West describing themselves as “real Americans” and of their reputation for being genuinely nice people, but not until I went there did I appreciate how open and welcoming the people of Chicago really are. I went travelling to Chicago in March, just at the end of the really cold weather, and a few things — apart from the cold — surprised me about the city. For starters, ‘the lake’ (Lake Michigan) is like the seaside. It even has its own beach. In a rare example of metricisiation in the US (intentional or not) the ‘Magnificent Mile’ is only a kilometre long. And, perhaps most surprisingly for America’s third–largest urban area (ten million people live in greater Chicago), the city centre is actually pretty small and very easy to explore. Unfortunately when we were there we could not avail of any of the boat trips that are on offer either along the river or onto the lake as it was too early in the season. If you do go to Chicago between now and October be sure to try them, and try the Architectural Tour too, as it really is a great way to see the city and learn about the USA’s first skyscrapers. There seems to be a bit of rivalry between the two largest buildings to woo visitors. The John Hancock building invites you have a drink and/or a meal on the 95th floor and has a world– famous a glass incline so you can lean out over the side — it’s not recommended if you’re queasy around heights, as you’re almost 1000 feet above the ground. The Sears Tower has a glass pathway at the very top, and it’s definitely not for the faint hearted.

All the big name shops are present in Chicago: Bloomingdales, Macys, Abercrombie & Fitch, Cartier, and there is great value available, especially to tourists. We visited Mi-

chael Kors and were attracted by the 40% discount advertised, and when the assistant heard our accents she told us to get a card at reception and we got a further 15% off! The

best thing about the city is that it is so accessible: If you stay on or just off the Magnificent Mile you are no more than 15 minutes from dropping back the bags and going again.

As with the shops all the big–name hotels are also present but we found great value and a beautiful hotel at the end of the Mile overlooking the lake at The Drake Ho-

tel (thedrakehotel.com). The Drake is 100 years old and many well–known films were based there over the years. They also host a fabulous jazz evening with dancing in the tea room on Saturdays and Sundays. Look for a room overlooking the lake and, if possible, a corner room as they are extra large. When you have a drink in the hotel bar ask to see where Marilyn Monroe and Joe Di Maggio carved their initials while they were honeymooning there. Eating out is a great experience in Chicago whether it is in the famous Cheesecake Factory in the Plaza on Michigan Avenue (which we could never get into because it was so busy — booking is essential, and I’m talking breakfast here!) or the even more famous Morton’s Steakhouse, where the speciality is a 48oz steak. New York’s Smith & Wollensky has a restaurant in Chicago overlooking the river with lovely terraced seating and is worth a visit. For a particularly special occasion try the North Pond. It’s a ten–minute taxi ride outside the city but well worth it. The food is outstanding and the service is so personal and special you will not want to leave. One of our party was celebrating a birthday and when the staff found out on our arrival they took back the menus, sat us with a drink and came back 10 minutes later with personalised Happy Birthday menus they made especially for her. There are plenty ways of getting to Chicago and we chose to fly from Cork via London, paying a little bit more for premium economy seats whicih were well worth it. Give Lee Travel or your local travel agent a call and they will give you all the options.

Blue power

Cramming 150 horses into a tiny body is a recipe for fun, as Seán Creedon finds out behind the wheel of the VW Polo Blue GT

I

thought I was going to pick up a Golf GTi last week, but it turned out to be a Polo Blue GT. I didn’t realise that VW were also offering the Polo as a hot hatch. At first glance the Blue GT doesn’t look much different than the regular Polo. Even the most observant tyrekicker would hardly notice that the Blue GT is 15mm lower than the regular version. The power this 1.4-litre tur-

bocharged petrol engine has to offer is awesome. With 150 brake horsepower you can get from zero to 100km/h in just over seven seconds. Volkswagen celebrates the 40th anniversary of their first Polo this year. Since 1975 the car has been a great seller for the company, with over 12 million sales worldwide. The first Polo was based on the Audi 50 hatchback; now the tables have turned and the Audi A1 is based on the Polo.

LEXUS CORK THE NEW NX. NOW AVAILABLE

When I tested the new Polo last year, I drove a 1.0-litre version with 60 brake horsepower and found that it was fast. But after a week driving a car with 150 brake horsepower I am worried that a brown envelope with a Garda stamp might be dropping through my letter box in the coming weeks. It was really lively and if you want to show off you can certainly leave other drivers in your wake at the traf-

fic lights. The top speed is 220km/h, but I didn’t get an opportunity to go to Mondello Park to check out that speed. When I drove the regular version of the new Polo last year it came in a very attractive Mayan blue. This time, it was ‘blue silk.’ Being a VW, all the controls on the dash are sensibly arranged and easy to use. You also get a five–inch display screen on the dash, which I used mainly for the radio. My son bought a new Polo a few years back and he had a problem hitting his heel off the lever to adjust the driver’s seat. There is a similar lever to adjust the front passenger seat and that was one of the

first things I checked. Yes, the levers are still there and can be annoying. It’s best just to ignore them, unless you need to adjust the seats. Inside there is nice touch of blue on the ‘bucket type’ front seats and also in the rear. There is just about room for five adults. The boot is divided into two levels and the good news is that underneath that there is a full–size spare wheel, which is a major plus. Everybody I speak to really appreciates the idea of proper spare wheel and they dread getting a car with a repair kit. No matter what type of car you are buying you should always insist on at least a ‘mini’ spare wheel.

Prices for the regular Polo start at €15,165, which is good value, but if you want all those horses working under the bonnet in the Blue GT version you are looking at ‘on the road’ prices of €23,720. However, fuel consumption is low and road tax is only €190. The regular Polo is a very neat motor, but if it’s power you are after, then Blue is the colour. You can check out the Blue Polo and other cars in the VW range at: Blackwater Motors, Victoria Cross, Fermoy and Skibbereen; Noel Deasy, New Mallow Road; Newmarket Motors in Newmarket and O’Leary’s of Lissarda.

Haven’t the foggiest

The Cork News Karting League in association with Kartworld, Watergrasshill The popular Cork News Karting Leagues are continuing at high speed. The results for the second round of League Two are: 1st place: Dead Bull (Ben O’Shaughnessy, Robert Upton)

2nd place: Team Kaspers (Kaspers Kaune, Maurice Ronan and Kaspers Viestrims)

4th place: Audi Motorsport (Dave Harrington and Greg Whelan)

3rd place: Dempsey Racing (Martin Carey, Daniel Whelan and Con Dempsey)

5th place: Team Casters (John Burke, James Connolly and Daniel Burke)

The unseasonal warm temperatures (long may they last!) have caused Cork’s roads to have more than their fair share of foggy mornings before we get to the glorious afternoon sunshine that’s got everyone in good form, and with them problems for the county’s road users. Luckily, the schools have been off and that’s reduced the early morning rush, but there are still drivers out there who aren’t handling the fog — which can be extremely dense

in places, especially near water — very well. The first thing that should come to mind the second you see fog ahead is “S, S, S”: slow down, stay back, shine your lights. Fog, especially sudden patches of thick fog, can be a killer. Don’t presume that because you can see one or two cars in front that you’re ok. Hang well back and give yourself plenty of time to react in case of accidents, obstructions or pedestrians, and reduce your speed for the same reason.

Light up with dips, and rear fog lamps (and fronts, if you have them) and be prepared for anything. If visibility is especially bad, consider muting your radio and opening a window: hearing what’s going on ahead could mean the difference between stopping in time or not. Finally, and almost as important, as soon as the fog lifts remember to turn off your fog lamps! They’re great in poor visibility, but as soon as they’re not needed they become a nuisance and a danger to others.

Munster Car Club’s Moonraker Forestry Rally, based out of the Abbey Hotel in Ballyvourney, will roar around the roads of the Gaeltacht this weekend. Nearly 60 crews have entered for the event and the format will be four stages repeated twice, giving a total of 64km. Championship leader Michael O’Brien (pictured) heads to

the event with a narrow five– point lead in the Valvoline Irish Forestry Championship over Northern Ireland’s Niall Henry, while Andrew Purcell, who won the previous round in Donegal, is also in. Two of the more interesting entries are those of World Rally Championship hopeful Keith Cronin, who will tackle the

Ciao, Bambina! Lorcan MacMuiris nips around town in a reborn legend: the super–agile, super–fun FIAT 500

T

he original FIAT 500, the Cinquecento, was an instant classic. Funky looking, usually brightly coloured, blessed with a big fabric sunroof, almost small and light enough to pick up and carry, it was a forward–looking 1950s design, way ahead of its time. It practically screamed “hot young thing” and its half–litre engine was just about perfect for dealing with Italy’s berserk city traffic. You won’t see too many originals around these days, least of all in Ireland: FIAT’s famously sensitive body panels once had a tendency to disintegrate with the slightest hint of dampness and as much as we all love Cork, there’s no getting away from the fact that it’s not exactly the driest, warmest place for a tiny car to try to survive. Luckily, half a century of development and adaptation shaped the original 500s successor into a much sturdier little classic, but its looks have barely changed — that’s how good they were on day one. It’s still enough to bring a smile to your face from the outside, and that contines as you sit into its unexpectedly spacious, two–tone cabin. Much like the Ford Ka (with which it shares some of its bodywork), this is a little TARDIS of a machine, and both head and leg room seem almost unreasonable given its teenyweeny exterior. Gavin from Lee Garage hands me the key, I flick it open, and the 1.2 engine whirrs into life as the large speedo/tacho lights up in the middle, keeping all the information you want right there in front of you. An electronic voice asks me how my phone is doing as I bluetooth it to the punchy sound system, I inform it that all is well, and pull out into glorious sunshine on a day when you could almost mistake Cork for Venice. This is, for my money, the best city car you can get. It’s absurdly

The

Drive used car review

It’s official: Women are safer drivers Analysis of data from telemetric tracking tools has confirmed what insurance companies have been telling us for years: women are safer drivers than their male counterparts. The data comes from al-

small on the outside, intriguingly big on the inside, super nippy (the engine is code–named ‘Fire’ for a reason), joyously agile and, not to put too fine a point on it, fun fun fun. I have no intention of leaving town with it, especially not on a day like this. I know exactly how it’ll feel on a dual carriageway or motorway (which is to say, absolutely fine: FIAT says it’ll hit 99MPH) but I know it’s around Cork’s narrow, bendy streets where it’ll shine. For once I actually enjoy driving down South Mall, where the grass outside Electric is chock full of beautiful people basking, along Grand Parade (more baskers and some buskers) and up Patrick Street. A few twists and turns later and I’ve looped around, enjoying every corner on the way up past St Finbarr’s to College Road. Bad cyclists, foolish pedestrians and people parking like idiots? No problem! With a flick of the wheel I zip past them all, windows down, bellowing along with the music. As I head back towards the city centre I decide it’s time to buy some summery clothes and instead of my customary insistence on a car park, I use the 500 for its intended purpose: finding the smallest parking space around and slotting right in. Some irresponsible spending follows, but the boot is easily big enough for all my bags. Speak-

ing of bags, it’s hard to tell with the gleaming metal of the interior, but I’m surrounded by a family of airbags which makes this the shortest car ever to have eked out a five–star safety rating; something worth bearing in mind as a Ford Transit driven by what I can only assume was a man who had become temporarily insane breaks a red light and forces me to confirm that the brakes are capable of stopping this car dead at city speeds, no questions asked. Just for kicks, and barely put out by my brush with Vanman, I decide to drive around town again. That’s very high praise for this car, as my usual strategy for city driving is simply not to do it: I pretend the whole city is a pedestrian zone and ditch whatever car I can, in favour of going on foot. Unless, that is, I’m in a Cinquecento. One owner has driven this groovy little Italian design icon for just a shade over 50,000 miles since 2011 and if you’re in the market for the ideal city car (which will also fit plenty of kids and even some adults, along with shopping and picnics) as summer approaches, then you really ought to get in touch with Lee Garage on South Terrace. It’s a bargain at just €8,900. Give them a shout on 021 431 3344 to arrange a test drive, and take it from me: do it when the sun is shining!

most two thousand No Nonsense SmartDriver customers whose driving has been measured for three months. Among the more interesting data are that women in their 20s drive more fuel efficiently, with less sudden starting and

hard stopping than men of the same age are inclined towards. What’s more, Munster men are the riskiest drivers on the road, while teachers, scientists and engineers are the safest groups overall, whether men or women.

Offer has no cash value and is non-transferable. SatNav may not be provided on the day of collection but will be fitted on a subsequent date by your retailer. Please note that this may take up to 4 weeks after you have collected your new Mazda. Test drives subject to applicant status and availability.

In mysterious ways... One of the gems in the rough of the Irish music scene, Paul Tiernan has spent the last 15 years living in France. Eoghan McNeill catches up with him ahead of the launch of his new album, containing some of the most finely–crafted songs of his career, and a return to Cork.

I

nfluenced by his own mortality and “typical Irish Catholic upbringing,” France– based singer–songwriter Paul Tiernan is about to release his eighth album, marking the launch with four performances in his native Cork. Moving away from the confessional rhetoric so beloved of acoustic singer–songwriters, The Mystery of Others makes for a broad comment on love, religion and death. “The songs reflect where I am in life,” says Paul. Brought to a rural south of France village by love — “we’ve been together 15 years” — he’s lived near Bordeaux for the last decade. “I had the urge to leave Ireland since the time the Celtic tiger was revving up. That philosophy, it just didn’t appeal to me, or what I do. “There’s a well–trodden discourse about how Ireland lost its way grubbing for the gold in the river. “I go back at least once a year, and I was able to see the ‘progress’ as it was called, or the descent, as I would call it. “People are hurting now, I know, but in some ways it seems better. That kind of lifestyle isn’t necessary for happiness,” he says. While raised Catholic, Paul moved away from religion in his teenage years, and now with the release of his new album, attempts to address his relationship with God. “I have no stone to grind with my spiritual upbring-

ing. It was oppressive, but not particularly so. I’m an atheist now, but I’m no ideologue. Religion is more complicated than people portray. “There seems to be this feeling today that a capitalist, materialist–driven lifestyle is good, whereas a religious–driven life is bad. The replacement of religion with materialism has been equally destructive. It’s always more grey than black and white. I wanted to find that ‘grey’ on this record,” he says. Now 56, Paul says The Mystery of Others accepts the “cyclical nature of our lives,” and reflects a satisfaction with a life that’s included 22 years of recording and touring. “I look at Leonard Cohen. He only has a few years left performing; he’s aware of his mortality, and his music reflects that. You could say I’m entering my twilight years, too. Hopefully I’m a fair bit away from ’the end,’ but I can see my peers – guys I was friends with in my teens – getting older. I’m not over the hill, but I’m definitely looking over it. “With that recognition, your viewpoint changes. I find that you’re less emotionally attached to your surroundings, to the physical. You’re not necessarily happy about death, but you’re accepting of it, and prepared for it. It comes with a satisfaction with how you’ve lived,” he says. The lyrical profundity of The Mystery of Others has not been to the detriment of the

record’s melodies, with Paul looking to reference the “simplistic rock and pop music” he was raised on. “I don’t want to write disposable lyrics; equally I don’t want to write musical poetry. You still need a good tune. It can be hard to write something with depth, because the lyric can overshadow the melody. “I still like a good pop song,” he says. His experiences touring the Czech Republic, Germany and France — first with iconic band Interference which he joined in the 90s, and later as a solo artist — has served to give the record a “dark edge,” he says. “With travel, you see a lot of grime. I found that some of

“I don’t want to write disposable lyrics; equally I don’t want to write musical poetry.”

the songs needed an element of grime; of discordance. I’m much too melodic to fully go down that path, but I enjoyed exploring it. “A song, if you let it, will lead you in its own direction, and I’ve always been attracted to the slight touch of theatre to Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. “It helped the songs on the record: slightly lounge–jazz with a bit of grime,” he says. With the album’s release comes the opportunity to return to Cork to play four gigs in city and county, and to return to the social life he left behind: “the one thing I miss about Ireland, aside from friends and family,” he admits. He says that few things about touring have changed

since he first set out as a 24 year old, including the financial rewards of playing live. Regardless, there is little he would change: “When I was a lot younger, I might have been dazzled by the thoughts of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. “Music has always been what’s sacred to me, though,” he says. Paul Tiernan plays Couglan’s on Thursday, April 16th; De Barra’s, Clonakilty, on Thursday, April 23rd; The Sirius Arts Centre, on Friday, April 24th and Grove House in Schull on Sunday, April 26th.
