Caterina D’Amico 4 Before entering the BAC environment my work was a deep study of living spaces in relation to client’s needs. I sat for hours in front of plans to work with space. Space in Italy is expensive. I had to make the most of the sometimes few square meters at my disposal and understand how to transform them in the most useful and rational manner. The study of the impact of those alterations on the environment or/and on the cultural and historical background of the building was often left as a lastminute resolution. More often than not it was simply left behind and then just forgotten. Sure, economics was the main reason but there was little effort to combine and refine in order to adhere to the roots and aesthetics of the imme diate and near surroundings. There was limited observation, computation, and respect of what was already there. This aspect is undoubtedly part of the Italian culture where very often the public realm is largely disregarded, and the private property is well taken care of creating a great impact when trespassing the threshold of the intimate space. It is very common to walk the streets of small Italian towns and think of them as very poor areas. However, when you enter one of those homes you are struck by the beauty and the care you find within. There are multiple histori cal reasons for this behavior, but this is a matter for another essay. Let me just say it is more complicated than it seems. What is evident to our eyes and our hearts is that this decadence has become part of the Italian experience and sometimes essential to attract foreigners and tourists to our towns. As design ers it is important that we use our abilities to further help these towns to work on the public spaces preserving their folkloristic façade while maintaining the realism they represent. It would be a great loss if their worn look vanished so to acquire a modern and counterfeit new blanket. Today, after being at the BAC for 3 years, I go back to that work and observe it from a different perspective. I am able to see the blindness but at the same time the cleverness that guided me through those projects and the things I did very well and those that could have done better. Nevertheless, I am very proud of my work, and I certainly acquired the ability to render small and sometimes awkward spaces into ergonomically comfortable homes. Reflective Essay

The specific problem was in rearranging the spaces without knocking down too many walls. Also there was a need to isolate the apartment from the road as well as the neighbors. Insulating panels were positioned in the living room and kitchen walls that the apartment shares with the neighbors. The client wanted a cozy space in the kitchen area and a small entertainment space with couches. A big part of the kitchen space was occupied by a storage room and the glass cement wall separating the cooking area. These two aspects made the kitchen

This small apartment was renovated 20 years ago and it was for a newly wed couple. Therefore the space was practically divided in two. The living area a studio for the husband and the kitchen area with a studio for the wife. This new renovation is now for a single woman who wants it to be the last renovation of her life. She is looking for a nest where she can have space for dinners and small intimate parties.

I acquired knowledge regarding insulation panels and their effectiveness. The client requested that the material be ecological but highly function al. Among the many products offered by the market I found that Glass Wool panels were the best for this project due to their high durability and recyclability. Furthermore, they have a good level of resistance to mold and fire.
Collaboration
Insulated walls
Collaboration in this project was with artisans and specific skill workers. In particular the furniture was designed by a very experienced carpenter who I coordinated and guided towards more modern looking pieces, while still retaining the art of hand made furniture. The hard wood floor was also challenging because the wood used was recovered from another project. It was hard to find a high skilled carpenter that could adapt it to the new use. I performed the research and acquisition of a renowned carpenter. I directed the work with the client and the carpenter to lay out the floor. The the bathroom furniture and the foyer furniture was tailored by an artisan who sourced and restored some antique pieces and adapted them to the space.

Collaboration I learned that water and septic tanks can be of different materials; fi berglass, plastic, steel, and precast concrete. Among these the precast concrete has the most advantages. It is very heavy and that keeps it in place and in the correct position even when it contains no water. This facilitates the preparation to anchor the tank to the ground. It does not rust or fail. It actually gradually strengthens over time. Fur thermore, it can be emptied without collapsing. Finally concrete is non toxic made of natural ingredients, thus it does not effect water quality. It may crack but it is easily mended by emptying it and fixing it from the inside.

The main issue was removing the old plants and maintaining them alive while excavating the garden.

The septic tank and water tank were a difficult task. Furthermore, the positioning required providing a cement base that could support both so as to remain horizontal at all times. Proper skilled workers were hired for the job. No demolition was done but we erected walls to sepa rete the dining kitchen area from the living room. A protec tion against humiditywass was erected in the bedroom Water tank Septic tank
The main challenge was to create a septic tank, since there was no sewer system and the drinking water tank since the water is not always provided by the town at all times.
I collaborated with IKEA architects who were very helpful and creative and provided us with many simple and functional ideas.. I worked closely with the plumber in evaluating the cost of designing a new system versus uncovering the old. In analyzing the water usage during the year it became clear that there were leakages in the system. It was easier and less expensive to implement a new and more efficient plumbing system
The plumbing was also an issue since the blueprints were missing. The house was completely furnished with IKEA products to keep the furnishing budget low and devote more to the renovation.

I collaborated with the structural engineers to understand which walls should be eliminated and which should be kept. Also the structure was reconsolidated and adapted to resist earthquakes.
Anything can be done with a good engineer. The consolidation of the building was performed accurately. The solution is helpful, the structure is more resistant preventing it from totally collapsing. However the procedure does not guarantee a complete coverage, be cause there was no intervention performed on the adjacent, attached houses.
The kitchen floor was changed using a typical rock called Pietra di Comiso similar to Travertino. This rock comes from the near town of Comiso. Most materials were selected and found locally following the Italian ecological law zero Km materials.
A boroque facade home in the center of Ragusa, inherited by Anna, needed a complete renovation and adaptation to host herself her husband and her two Shekids.requested a 2 bedroom house with 2.5 bathrooms and a large kitchen and living room. A connection to the above terrace was also a request since there was no access to that.

The main challenge was to maintain as much of the structure as possible. The floors were original and in black tar and the owner wanted to keep those as well. This house was built between two other houses, therefore the windows were only in the front and in the back. Hence, it was challenging to provide adequate air and light to each space. After provinding many solutions the client and I decided on the most simple and functional plan; keeping the division of space to the minimum. The facade was not restored but the antique wood windows and balcony rails where restored and brought back to life.
I hired expert workers for the tar pavement of the house, since it is a particular mix that gives the quality and the color to the strata needed.
Some walls were demolished and the mix of tar needed to be as similar to the old mix as possible. I collaborated closely with the specialist and selected two mix results that closely matched the existing floors.

The tar pavement repairs were interesting as the tiles are made on site with expansion joints cre ated on site. It seems like tiles but it is not.

The stairs are rather steep but couldn’t be demolished for two main reasons. Firstly they are structural and secondly they are historical. Above all they are beautifully crafted and paved in black lucent tar.
Along the stairs there are two mezzanine floors used for storage with no direct light and air. The access could not be modified and is rather uncomfortable but the client and I retained the spaces for their great function of storing a great deal of things. The height is 1.8 mt. sufficient to walk erect and the spaces are 5x1,5 mt. each.
