My Curl Journey
Over the course of my Life, I have had my hair totally wrecked twice. At 13, this woman kept putting a lye relaxer in it that eventually broke the back out and I had to have it all cut off which was a traumatic event. Then thirteen years ago, after a serious of upsets including the loss of a child, a break-up with a beau and the attempted theft of my TV show, I mistakenly relaxed my hair after eight years of letting it grow long naturally. Once again it was broken all out. I continued to relax it for another eleven years, abet with a much better, though unreliable hairdresser. But then, two years ago, I decided to transition it back to its natural state because it wasn’t growing.
tgatp|beauty
I have never really liked my natural hair. My Mama had lovely wavy hair and my father had reddish Afro hair. I would have loved to have had one or the other - either crunchy thick afro hair or my Mama’s Spanish wave Instead my hair is an annoying combo of the two - soft with a tight curl pattern. It is not coarse but it is not wavy, it is not thick or thin. When blown straight it is too thin, when left curly it is too tightly coiled. It just sorta is. In short, it’s a beauty pain in the ass.
For curly gals, it is an expensive beauty research experiment to find the ideal products for your hair.I have tried out two dozen or more products. Many worked and many didn’t. I learned about the different curl patterns - mine is 3C/4A - and about low and high porosity. On the next pages, please find what I have learned Including the best products and tips to care for your curls.
tgatp|hair
CURLS ROCK!
Thank God, times are different now. Natural hair is finally being accepted and promoted. There are loads of great products plus social media to help. I watched dozens of YouTube videos - and still do - for the best products and protective styles. I also just got to go the magical curl palace Beleza Natural and they made me love my natural hair for the first time.
CURL
PATTERN CHART It is vital to the health of your hair and your pocketbook to figure out the exact curl pattern of your hair. This will allow you to buy the best products that suit your type.
tgatp|hair
Normal VS Low VS High Porosity Hair Porosity is the ability of your hair to absorb and retain water and water-soluble prodycts. Curly hair is the most fragile of all hair types. Thus, as well as, your curl pattern, it is crucially important that you know whether you have low or high porosity hair.
Normal Porosity Hair
Low Porosity Hair

High Porosity Hair
Low porosity hair tends to be less shiny and tends to be dry and have trouble retaining moisture. It is hard to wet this hair and the wrong products will sit on strands and roll off the hair strand.

With high porosity hair cuticles open and stay open. Caps between the cuticle layers make hair wet easily but it also tends to tangle and break. Takes a long time to dry and can appear weighed down with product.

The easiest hair to maintain, normal porosity hair easily maintains shine and volume. Cuticles float open and close. Water stays on top but then absorbs into the strands.
tgatp|hair
Test Your Porosity Level
tgatp|hair
The Float Test Take some strands of clean hair from your brush or comb (note: only clean hair as hair products can alter your results),and drop them in a bowl of water. Let them sit for a few minutes. If your hair floats after the time is up, you have low porosity. If it sinks, you have high porosity. If it floats in the middle of the bowl your porosity is normal.
The Slip ‘n Slide Test
The Spray Bottle Test
Slide a strand of your hair through your fingers in an upward motion toward your scalp. If you feel small bumps along the way, you have high porosity. If the shaft is smooth, your cuticle is bound tight and you have low porosity hair.
Take a small section of your hair and mist it with a spray bottle. Watch closely: if the water beads up on your hair, it is low porosity. If it absorbs quickly, your hair is high porosity. If the water sits on your hair for a couple minutes before absorbing, you have normal porosity hair.
tgatp|hair
Caring for Normal, Low & High Porosity Hair Once you know your porosity type, you can pick the proper products and methods to treat your hair. Here are some tips!
Normal Porosity Hair
Normal porosity hair needs different things at different times. Experiment with a variety of products to see what works and doesn’t for you.
Low Porosity Hair
High Porosity Hair
Low porosity hair needs loads of moisture-rich products since it is resistant to moisture. Use protein rich daily conditioners and moisture-rich products like my fav, coconut oil or shea butter. Avoid heavy products that lay on top of your strands. Use apple cider vinegar products, like DP Hue, to clarify your hair and avoid build up.
The key word for this type of hair is lightweight. Be careful not to overuse products, which will weigh your hair down. Silicone free leave-in conditioners and weekly deep conditioning is best.
1.Handle With Care No vigorous brushing or combing, especially when your hair is dry. As much as possible avoid brushing and combing and separate your curls with your fingers.
2. Moisture and condition regularly Curly hair tends to be very dry so it is crucial to moisturize it daily from root to ends. Also the tighter your curls, the more you need to co-wash and condition. Many women of color falsely believe they only need to shampoo one a week or once every two weeks. But, in actuality, our hair needs more conditioning,. I shampoo and deep condition once a week. But I also condition every 3 to 4 days.
tgatp|hair
Tips For Curly Hair Care
Tips For Curly Hair Care I used to avoid getting my hair wet. However, water provides the vital moisture that curly hair needs. You don’t have to get your hair completely wet. Just spritz it or wet your hands and run them through your hair daily in between shampoos.
4. Find the oil that works best for you and use it regularly. I have tried numerous oils but my favorite is coconut oil. It is not greasy and moistures both my hair and my skin. Every two days I use coconut oil and water to re-moisturize my hair.
5. Use only sulfate-free shampoos Sulfates are very bad for curly hair and in fact, not that great for any hair type. Check your labels and use more organic shampoos.
tgatp|hair
3. Water Is Your Hair’s Best Friend
6. Deep Condtion Weekly with a Steamer You have to deep condition at least once a week, preferably with a steamer. This is imperative to the health of your hair so fo not skip this step.
7. Airdry Heat damages curls since it sucks out moisture. So I always airdry my hair unless getting a trim. This requires planning in the winter since it means you can’t go outside. However, your curls will stay healthier if you forego the heat.
8. Give your edges extra TLC
My edges, both in front and back get extra dry. So I condition them regularly in between shampoos
tgatp|hair
Tips For Curly Hair Care
9. Make sure to get regular trims Rather than a “big chop, I have my hair blown out and trimmed every 8 weeks or so, to endure healthy ends.
10. Check out all the YouTube gals When I first decided to work with my natural hair. I discovered all kinds of great tips on YouTube. Type in your curl type and watch these awesome gals.
11. Invest in silk scarves and pillow cases to sleep on I use both scarves AND pillow cases since I find that my scarves come off in my sleep.

7. Gently massage and pull through your hair.
4. Strain the liquid into a tumbler
8. Leave in for 20 minutes under a cap
5. Let cool and add a couple drops of your favorite essential oil. I like

I was introduced to this great line at the WWD Style Dimension party during February Fashion Week. The line is made of Apple Cider Vinegar, which clarifies the hair and helps rid it of product build-up. This line is wonderful and leaves my curls clean and hydrated. I am particularly mad for the Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse that I use as a co-wash.

Book Of The Month Life Scale By Brian Solis This book could not have come at a better time for me. Working 18-hour days almost 7-days a week has left me burnt out and exhausted. Brian’s book teaches us to disconnect and focus in order to work more productively. His tips are saving and restoring my Life, so I wanted to share them with you.
tgatp|books
8 Tips To Regain Your Focus from Brian Solis Author of “Life Scale” In the age of ubiquitous social media, our society as a whole has become “distracted,” unable to focus on one thing for more than a few minutes without checking Facebook or our smartphones. How extreme is this problem? In New York, there’s a mini epidemic of distracted teens who are getting plowed down in crosswalks; they’re glued to their smartphones and so are many of the drivers who hit them! In his book Lifescale, author, SXSW speaker and cultural anthropologist Brian Solis explores this phenomenon from a broad perspective and in a personal way, homing in on his own struggle to put social media in its place while regaining focus, productivity and creativity. If you find yourself chronically distracted, here are 8 suggestions for regaining your focus and productivity:
tgatp|books
#1: Visualize Use Visualization to Overcome Procrastination. We all do it to some extent, but for some of us chronic procrastination has become a destructive habit, and one of the top symptoms of our perpetual distraction. When you find yourself putting off an important assignment, rather than focus on the negative aspects of the project (“I’m not entirely sure how to do this.”), visualize the tangible benefits and the feelings that will result from delivering quality work on time. Lean into that anxiety and uncertainty, rather than finding easier tasks to distract you
tgatp|books
#2: Prioritize Tasks Focus on your most challenging project first thing in the morning. Our brains are strongest (and science shows, actually larger!) in the morning and, all things being equal, morning is when we’re most capable of doing our most mentally demanding work. So try getting an early start, avoid email, pinging phones, etc. for as long as possible and you’ll find that you’ve made serious headway in your big project. You can schedule meetings, respond to emails and phone calls, and organize your files later in the day (when your brain is smaller).
tgatp|books
#3: Practice The Achor Rule Try the Achor (20 second) rule. Psychologist Shawn Achor believes that making tasks slightly easier or more accessible will encourage you to do them (or be distracted by them!), whereas making a behavior slightly harder will decrease the likelihood that you will give in to your urges. If something – such as checking your social media or answering unimportant emails – takes you 20 seconds longer to do, you’re less likely to do it. So, when you need to focus, put your phone in the next room and get to work.
tgatp|books
#4: Utilize the Pomodoro Technique Use the Pomodoro Technique. Named for the Pomodoro kitchen timer (the one shaped liked a small tomato), this time management technique was developed in the 80s by Italian Francesco Cirillo. It’s a brilliant hack for focusing in on essential tasks for short, predetermined periods of time and demands that we shut out phones, email, coworkers and other distractions during those manageable periods.
tgatp|books
6 Steps To The Pomodoro Technique • 1 Choose one task
• 4
• 2
• 5
Set the Pomodoro for 25 minutes. • 3
Focus exclusively on your assigned task.
Stop when the timer rings and put a checkmark on a piece of paper.
Take a 5 minute break before starting again . • 6 After 4 “pomodoros”, take a longer break of up to 30 minutes and use that time to check email, and follow up with callers, coworkers, etc.
tgatp|books
#5: No Multitasking Abandon the Practice of Multitasking. If you haven’t picked up on this from the previous tips, we’ll say it directly: Multitasking doesn’t work! It shrinks your I.Q., makes you mistake prone, reduces the quality of your work, makes you irritable and devoid of empathy (lowers your E.Q., or emotional quotient) and, bottom line, actually reduces your productivity by 40%. So, trim the nonessentials from your To-Do List and tackle projects one at a time. It may seem counterintuitive, at first, but you’ll get a lot more accomplished.
tgatp|books
#6: Meditate Meditation. A lot of us, including Lifescale author Brian Solis, were initially averse to meditation for any number of reasons. Often, its simply because the celebrities endorsing the practice make our eyes roll. However, once we allow ourselves to cut through the clutter, we realize practicing meditation is a direct route to gaining focus and eliminating distraction from our lives. Meditation allows us to return to the simple practice of paying attention. No-nonsense meditation tips can be found in Lifescale and in the writings of noted speaker and yoga practitioner Swami Rama.
tgatp|books
#7: Practice Mindfulness One of a number of highly effective way to achieve mindfulness, is mindfulness meditation - the practice of bringing out attention to the present moment, not fretting about the past or stressing on scenarios for the future. Learning and practicing mindfulness techniques on a daily basis helps us eliminate distractions and reduces the anxiety surrounding our inability to focus. It starts with always remembering to breathe.
tgatp|books
#8: Know Your Values Identify and embrace your core values. This may seem like an odd cure for distraction, but it’s actually one of the most important. Lifescale includes an easy-to-follow exercise to help you identify the aspects of life that are most important to you. Create a list of your Essential Personal Values and then begin the process of narrowing the list down. You’ll get a better handle on what’s important to YOU (not your friends, family or society), which will help you stop going in 20 directions and actually focus on your priorities. By eliminating things you believe you should value (but don’t really) or that your friends value but you don’t (extreme affluence vs. security and leisure time, for example), you’ll arrive at a core list of values that truly matter to you. Do this work, and greater focus will follow.

Since writing Lifescaling, Brian has experienced a new lease on life, in which he can actually feel change and great relief; an enormous weight off his shoulders of crushing pressure that he was used to bearing.” A recent Facebook post reveals Brian’s excitement as he looks forward to the release of the book, while connecting his exuberance with a revisit of the U2 classic “Where the Streets Have No Name.” He wrote: “I went on this journey. I’m still on it. Soon I’ll be asking you if you want to go on this journey together. . .to a place of discovery and imagination…a place of awareness and fulfillment…a place where we can dance and sing on the streets with no name.”

UNLOCKING CANNABIS’ ROLE IN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
tgatp|wellness
“Herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction. ~ Bob Marley
Medical cannabis’ prominence has increased quite dramatically over the last 5 years. Since California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1995, cannabis health products have slowly but surely reached the mainstream. Today, Medical marijuana has majority support, with 33 states endorsing the substance for those with a doctor’s prescription. A number of medical marijuana states now offer cannabis to all adults, regardless of prescription, like Colorado, Nevada, and California, for example. Michigan became the 10th state to legalize cannabis outright last year following the midterm elections. 2018 also ushered in the first recreational cannabis sales on the East Coast, with one Massachusetts recreational marijuana dispensary projecting sales between 6 and 8 million dollars annually.
tgatp|wellness
Furthermore, the U.S. Federal government has slowly loosened its hold on cannabis’ legality. The Agricultural Impovement Act of 2018 removed hemp from a list of schedule 1 substances, making it legal like any other agricultural product. Moreover, Epidiolex became the first FDA-approved cannabinoid oil medicine for those with severe forms of epilepsy.

Since legal cannabis reached this state of semi ubiquity, health nuts and weed connoisseurs alike have begun integrating the plant into their regimens, opening cannabis infused yoga studios, gyms, and other fitness related areas along the west coast and midwest. Ricky Williams, a former NFL player, launched Power Plant Fitness back in 2016, a San Francisco fitness center which allows and encourages cannabis use prior and post workout. And just last week, Martha Stewart partnered with firm Canopy Growth to sponsor cannabis derived CBD products. But how exactly does cannabis improve your health and wellness routine? What is the science behind the craze?

Cannabis and Your Endocannabinoid System To understand cannabis medical properties, and its potential as a healthy lifestyle supplement, we must first understand how the human body interacts with cannabis to produce its many effects. Enter the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. The ECS regulates bodily processes, acting in ways to preserve homeostasis, or your body’s natural balance. These processes include appetite, sleep, mood, pain sensation, and many others. When consumed, cannabis interacts with this regulatory network, producing its effects. When used in an optimal way, cannabis may help better regulate your body and keep balance. A long series of receptors and neurotransmitters populate the endocannabinoid system. These neurotransmitters act as cells that transfer impulses nerve to nerve, by binding to open receptors. These receptors are called cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2).
tgatp|wellness
To regulate your body, your ECS releases certain neurotransmitters during periods of high physical activity, like workouts. Anandamide, one of the two most studied endocannabinoids, is one of these neurotransmitters. Anandamide provides a good sensation similar to that of body made endorphins. When you are in the zone during physical performance, Anandamide binds to CB1 receptors in your ECS, creating a feeling of euphoria, commonly known as “runner’s high.” When this runner’s high ends, your body releases fatty acid amide hydrolase, or FAAH, an enzyme. FAAH metabolizes Anandamide. Once metabolized, anandamide cannot produce it’s euphoric effects, and the runner’s high ends. FAAH acts like a switch, turning off the effects of Anandamide on the ECS’s many receptors.
tgatp|wellness
When you ingest cannabis, cannabinoids bind to and block certain CB1 and CB2 receptors. Studies show that cannabis related compounds will bind to these specific CB1 receptors, and block the FAAH switch. Without FAAH, anandamide stays active longer, effectively extending its euphoric effects Cannabis action on anandamide metabolism may explain why cannabis has been found to be so beneficial for use alongside exercise, as it helps invigorate and extend our body’s natural reward system for physical activity.
tgatp|wellness
By interacting with your ECS, cannabis has many analgesic properties perfect for pre and post workout. In terms of recovery, cannabis not only cuts down on muscle inflammation; it stimulates activities, which will help start or conclude your workout, like eating and sleeping. Cannabis indica strains, often known for their couch lock and munchies inducing effects, provide pain relief sleep aid and appetite improvement, which can help athletes pre and post workout.
Moreover, cannabis use encourages healthy hydration. ECS receptors can be found all over your body, including your salivary glands. When cannabinoids bind here, they inhibit the salivary glands, causing a dry mouth sensation known colloquially as “cotton mouth.” This encourages hydration during your workout, which can aid in your overall rest and recovery. “The resurrection is a description of how the universe self-corrects, life always reasserting itself even when forces of death and darkness have temporarily prevailed. Like a tiny flower growing through cracks in broken cement, peace of mind emerging at last after periods of deep grief, or people continuing to fall in love despite the ravages of war, love always gets the final say. To lean on the resurrection is simply to recognize what’s true; that if happiness hasn’t arrived yet, then the story isn’t over.”

TGATP April Movie Guide I missed doing my movie guide for March so I have included some movies that came out in late March in this guide, This month, I am very excited about"Avengers: Endgame”. I highly recommend seeing both “Breakthrough"and"Amazing Grace” to celebrate Easter. And”Teen Spirit" is one of my favorite films of the year, so far. We also have the Tribeca Film Festival here in NY this month with tons of films and events. Check out https:// www.tribecafilm.com for ticket info.

Shazam
It is a wee bit confusing that the superhero in “Shazam" is also called"Captain Marvel"since we have the Avengers Captain Marvel. I was a big Shazam fan as a kid because it was the one superhero comic that combined silliness with super powers. This is sure to be a blast for the whole family.

US
Jordan Peele knocks it out of the park again with this scary, fun film. While I didn't love it as much as"Get Out"when I first saw it, once I thought about it I recognized the sheer genius of the story. My one change? The Tethered should have simply been our naturally manifested worst selves, instead of the products of some government conspiracy.
Seeing the animated version of Disney's "Dumbo" is one of my earliest childhood memories. I remember how sad it was to me. I have yet to see this version but it looks wonderful.

Pet Sematary
Featuring the scariest parting sentence of any book ever written,"Pet Sematary is my favorite Stephen King novel of all time. The original film, while scary, veered toward campiness. The new version changed the story completely and not for the better! While horror fans should see it, I was very disappointed.
The Best Of Enemies
The pairing of Taraji Henson and Sam Rockwell in this true story from the civil rights era looks like the first Oscar-worthy film of the year. In these racially fraught times, it is so important that we remember what we have come through. I would love to see some high school outreach to get high school kids in the seats for this one.
An amazing film showcasing an amazing talent! This is the closest we will all get to experiencing a 1970's Aretha concert. All concert and no story, this is a perfect tribute to the Queen Of Soul.Â
Little

I loved this instant classic about a successful, but really mean black professional, who is forced to relive her childhood to heal her emotional scars. The whole cast is pitch perfect and the story is wonderful. Little a great film to take your pre-teens to. .

Amazing Grace
tgatp|entertainment
Teen Spirit I loved this film and it is just what we need in these fraught times! A Flashdance type story - there is even a tiny homage to that 80's classic in the beginning - this feel-good movie follows a very talented Polish teen on her quest to win “Teen Spirit” an "American Idol" type TV show in the UK. You will fall in love with all of these characters.
The Best Of Enemies
Just in time for Easter comes this wondrous story of a Godly miracle. It's a Christian movie with universal importance and appeal. I wept with Joy throughout this one. As a Christian, it made me realize that even though we don't often think about it, we are still living in Biblical times. The Bible is still being written and we are still experiencing miracles.

 Avengers: Endgame
II have been waiting for this with the excitement of a kid for Christmas. I bought my ticket the first day they went on sale and will be seeing it on the very first day! The end of the Avengers saga looks to be as exciting as Infinity War was. All I know is that my gals Gamora and Shuri and Black Panther and all the Avengers better come back and make it through till the end! Otherwise, I am not gonna be a happy camper.
On Easter “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” - John 3:16 16
While many Christians make Christmas the highest holy day of their year, for me, it is Easter. Because it is through his resurrection that Jesus teaches us that love never dies. It is through the resurrection of Christ that we see the promise fulfilled, the prophecy upheld, the miracle realized. Think of all that was done to silence him, including the horrible final crucifixion. Yet, 2019 years later, his lessons and words are celebrated and add comfort and solace to the lives of millions of people worldwide. Christ’s resurrection and continuing life through his words proves to all of us, that Love never dies.
