The Food Festival with the X factor It was fun, food and frolics with a sprinkling of Mary Berry magic at Thame Food Festival this year. Yet again Thame Food Festival proved a real destination this weekend for foodies, families and music lovers. There was a myriad of tantalising artisan and street food producers, demonstrations galore, celebrity chefs and bakers, plus live music which culminated on the Sunday with a performance by United Vibe featuring local Elliot Horne - fresh from their X Factor experience. About 18k people flocked to enjoy the event - despite the weather! Mary Berry shone with an interview in the packed main marquee followed by a book signing, before taking some time to visit many of the stalls. In fact Mary Berry said as part of her interview; “It’s an amazing show (and I go to lots of shows), and I can honestly say that there’s more here than I have ever seen at an outdoor food festival. So enjoy everybody!” Its true there really was so much to see and do; including over 130 artisan food and hot street food producers, delicious samplings, BBQ demonstration,

pop-up pub and live music. There was also the Humble Country marquee filled to the brim with kitchenalia and home delights to buy. Not to forget the celebration of the 2019 Thame Food Festival Bursary for Local Artisan Producers which this year was awarded to Ozi Madden for his Amba Sauce. Through-out the two days the headline sponsor - Magimix UK - showcased demonstrations on their dedicated stage including many of the country’s leading chefs and bakers such as Alex Hollywood, Jane Devonshire and Ping Coombes (both former winners of Masterchef ) alongside Val Stones, Steven Carter Bailey and Briony May (previous contestants of Great British Bake Off ) to name just a few. Adding to the ambience and festival vibe was the live music stage by The First Thursday Music Club and Thame Town Music Club, with a broad programme of artists, including United Vibe. Fun cookery workshops run by Fun Kitchen and sponsored by the Coop were on through-out the weekend, where children could make Oodles of Noodles or Apple and Cinnamon Swirls. There were also other activities for the kids by

the Coop, Aylesbury Waterside Theatre and Thomley. And again, the foodie mix extended to our four legged friends with specialist dog treat stalls, demonstrations and fun Dog Shows by locally based, national charity the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. Lotte Duncan, Patron and organiser of the event says, “I am still reeling from the weekend! It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying all the wonderful artisan producers and street food vendors. As members of British Food Fortnight and falling on the middle weekend of that celebration we are so keen to showcase the diversity of wonderful foods that are produced in Britain.” She continues; “Events of this scale require so much work, from so many people, but it is so great when you see it all come together and you see people really enjoying and appreciating quality food. But no rest for us as we’re already planning for next year which will be on 26th and 27th September 2020, again at the Thame Showground – looking forward to seeing everyone there!” 01844 340385 www.thamefoodfestival.co.uk.

Time to remember and reflect at the Tree of Light events Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has announced details of their 2019 Tree of Light commemoration events. The Charity recognises Christmas can be a very emotional occasion and hosts two Tree of Light events which are open to all, regardless of religion or spirituality, and whether or not your loved one was cared for at the Hospice or elsewhere. “The Tree of Light events are designed to give people a space where a part of the season is set aside to remember and reflect on loved ones,” says Ann Kenny, the Bereavement Support Team Lead at the Hospice. This year’s Aylesbury Tree of Light event has moved indoors for 2019 and will take place at Aylesbury High School on Walton Road on Sunday 1st December at 5pm. It will also have a change of format, with more secular readings and music, rather than carols and prayers. “We are aware that many of our families are not Christians and may prefer

something less religious but still thoughtful and meditative,” says Vicky James, Events and Community Manager. “There are lots of other poems and readings which bring comfort, and beautiful music apart from carols, so we are trying something new to see what people think.” As well as attending the Tree of Light events, you can also sponsor a light in memory of loved ones and write a dedication which will appear in the Books of Honour which can be viewed at the Hospice in December and early January, and at the two Tree of Light events. To sponsor a light in memory of someone go to fnhospice.org.uk/tree-of-light or call the Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity Fundraising Team on 01296 429 975.

Festive fun at the

National Trust “In the words of Charles Dickens; ‘There is magic in the very name of Christmas’ and for many centuries Christmas has transformed the darkest days of the year to its most special time. “The National Trust throws open its doors throughout the festive period and into the New Year, adding to the excitement of Christmastime by reimagining the traditions of Christmases past in the settings of the period. “This year, there are new interpretations of the oldest midwinter themes, bustling Christmas markets, displays of bright, twinkling lights and vibrant evergreens, spectacular light shows and cosy Christmas craft workshops. There are new traditions to join the old and inspire happy memories across the generations. “Each magical day out supports the National Trust’s work as a charity looking after special places for future generations to enjoy.

“If you’re looking for somewhere special to escape the high street crowds this Christmas, the National Trust has lovely gifts to buy with shops in picturesque places, decorated houses to be awed by and wide landscapes to lose yourself in.” Introduction by George Goodwin, author of Christmas Traditions: a celebration of festive lore (a new gift book, published by the British Library and available through selected National Trust shops and booksellers.) STOWE 12 Days of Christmas 30 November – 4 January Stowe’s Christmas is themed around the Georgian Christmases of the 18th century, when the lead up to the 12th night’s celebratory feast day was an exciting journey of anticipation. Visitors will tour 11 Christmas installations around the garden co-created by artist duo Mossy Crow and community groups. The artworks are inspired by

Christmas traditions such as carols, family, games, gifts and panto and will manifest in unique, strange and wonderful interpretations of wreaths and kissing boughs. Visitors finish their journey at the Temple of Concord and Victory where the table is set for a magnificent 12th night feast. There’s all the drama of the occasion with a sumptuous feasting table, hundreds of lights, elaborate decorations created from garden foliage and a 12th night king and queen. Visitors will be able to pose as the king and queen in their elaborate costumes for a photo. Christmas shopping season 18 November – 22 December Stowe is once again opening up its historic parlour rooms to host a parade of local stallholders selling their traditional and handmade products. Browsing the cosy rooms at the New Inn followed by a stroll to take in the magnificent views of the landscape gardens and a hot cuppa in the café sure beats the commercial clamour of the high street or solitary clicking online for Christmas gifts. WADDESDON Musical Christmas Saturday 16 November 2019 – Sunday 5 January 2020 (11am-6pm, Wednesday to Sunday) No one does Christmas quite like Waddesdon. This year, you can step into a world of festive, musical splendour, as Waddesdon is transformed, inside and out. Waddesdon has many connections to the world of music, and this Christmas visitors will be welcomed by the smell of pine and the sound of classic carols, as they step into decorated rooms inspired by traditional tunes and memorable Christmas hits. Outside, the gardens will be illuminated with sparkling lights and colour, as Waddesdon’s longest ever Winter Light Trail fills the grounds. Beneath coloured tree canopies and bushes draped in sparkle, there are playful light features such as floodlit disco balls and a cascading river of light. The Manor’s façade will come to life, with coloured lights dancing in time to much-loved Christmas classics, illuminating the building’s distinctive architectural features and roofline.

The Thatch in Thame has been taking to the streets to launch Friends of The Thatch and thank the people of Thame who have been loyal to the pub since it first opened its doors back in the summer of 2008. The entire town centre of Thame was taken over with posters and banners popping up everywhere along with the team from the pub in flash mob style spreading the word about Friends of The Thatch, a new way for The Thatch to offer special gifts and exclusive treats whilst saying thank you to its loyal guests. People flocked to sign up to get their hands on the card and the fantastic things on offer. Friends of The Thatch is the brainchild of Peach partner Frazer Sutherland and the pub’s general manager Evelin Rae, who between them have been welcoming guests from Thame and further afield for over a decade. “We’ve created Friends of The Thatch to say thank you to the people who have loyally supported us, our valued guests,” he says. “We’ve enjoyed a special place on the social scene here in Thame for over ten years now, and it’s been brilliant to see the pub thrive. “That it has thrived is down to our guests, who have also become our

friends” he says. “Without our friends, The Thatch would not have become the place it is today, and we really wanted to find a way to say a proper thank you to the people who have been there for us. “So we’ve launched a special Friends of The Thatch card which is our way of saying thank you,” he continues. “With it, come monthly treats and gifts alongside exclusive invites to our events, with a few surprises thrown in along the way. Get your hands on one and you’ll also enjoy a different offer each month and be among the first to find out what’s coming up at the pub,” he says. To become a Friend of The Thatch, simply go to www.thethatchthame. co.uk/sign-up/ where you can find out more. You can also read about the many exciting events planned including details of Christmas and New Year at The Thatch. “We’re really looking forward to saying a big thank you to our guests,” adds Frazer. “It’s our way of giving something back to everyone who has stayed local to us all this time. Make sure you get yours and visit us soon so we can thank you in person.” For reservations please visit www.thethatchthame.co.uk

Christmas Fair Saturday 16 November - Sunday 22 December 2019, 11am-6pm Wed-Sun Lasting longer than ever before, Waddesdon’s spectacular Christmas Fair, with over 80 wooden chalets, is a shopping experience not to be missed. Hilary Westall with more exercise advice.

Exercising with Arthritis A

lthough arthritis is a condition that is commonly associate with ageing, it actually affects people of all ages, including children. A common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint, more than 10 million people in the UK have arthritis or other similar conditions affecting the joints. Keeping active is very important for people with arthritis as it increases strength and flexibility, reduces joint pain and can help combat fatigue. You don’t need to run a marathon or swim the Chanel; even moderate exercise can improve your health without hurting your joints. Exercise can: k Help maintain a healthy weight (which puts less pressure on joints). k Help maintain bone strength. k Give you more energy. k Help you sleep better at night. k Enhance your quality of life. k Improve body awareness and balance (reducing the chance of injury). Lack of exercise can make your joints even more painful and stiff as supporting muscles become weaker, creating more stress on your joints. Keeping muscles and surrounding tissue strong is crucial to maintaining support for your bones. When joints are stiff and painful, any exercise might feel like the least appealing thing to do, so you need to understand your limits and the level of exercise that will give you positive results. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis This is the most common type of arthritis in the UK, affecting nearly nine million people. It typically develops in adults who are in their mid-40’s or older, and is more common in women and people with a family history of the condition. Osteoarthritis initially affects the smooth cartilage lining of a joint, making movement more difficult and leading to pain and stiffness. Severe loss of cartilage can result in bone rubbing on bone,

12. Thame Out

changing the shape of the joint and forcing bones out of their normal position. The most commonly affected joints are those in the hand, spine, knees and hips. Rheumatoid arthritis Affecting more than 400,000 people in the UK, with women three times more likely to be affected than men, rheumatoid arthritis typically starts between 40 and 50 years of age when the body’s immune system targets affected joints leading to pain and swelling. Bone and cartilage may ultimately break down. There are many other types of related conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis, cervical spondylosis, fibromyalgia, lupus and gout, to name a few, so a correct diagnosis from your GP is very important. Common signs and symptoms of arthritis, which will vary depending on the type you have, include: k Joint pain, tenderness and stiffness. k Inflamed joints. k Restricted movement in the affected joint. k Warm red skin over the affected joint. k Muscle wasting and weakness. If diagnosed with arthritis, talk to your doctor about exercise and what types are best for you. Recommended exercises are likely to include the following:

Aerobic exercise Low impact, aerobic exercise that is easier on your joints, includes walking, cycling, swimming and using a cross trainer. Aerobic exercise helps with overall fitness, improves cardiovascular health, helps with weight control and gives you more stamina and energy. Build up to around 150 minutes of moderately intense aerobic exercise per week, which can be split into small chunks of 10 to 20 minutes if that’s more comfortable on your joints. Moderate intensity means your breathing rate will increase but you should be able to carry on a conversation. Other activities Any movement, no matter how small, can help. Body awareness and postural exercises such as yoga, tai chi and Pilates, can help improve balance, prevent falls, improve posture and co-ordination, increase muscle strength and promote relaxation. However, you should discuss your condition with your instructor first so that positions or movements that cause pain can be modified or avoided.

Protecting your joints If you’ve not been active for a while, ease slowly into exercise to avoid making joint pain worse. k Keep impact low to minimise joint stress. k Apply heat for about 20 minutes – warm towels, hot packs, or a warm shower – before you start exercise, to promote relaxation and relieve pain. k Warm up gently, for example, start with range-of-motion exercises before moving on to strength or aerobic work. k Exercise with slow and easy movements, take a break if you feel pain or notice swelling or redness in your joints. k Ice after – apply ice to your affected joints for up to 20 minutes after activity, especially Range-of-motion exercises if there is any swelling or redness. Moving your joints through their full k Don’t overdo it. It’s normal to feel some range of motion helps relieve stiffness and increases your ability to move joints through discomfort after exercise if you’re new their full range. For example, raising the arms to it, but if in doubt, talk to your doctor or physical therapist about what pain is overhead; rolling shoulders forward and normal and what is a sign of something backward. more serious. A party frame of mind A great pair of glasses help you see better. They can also make you look great. Deborah Rogers tries on some new designer frames at Ivan R Cammack.

S

electing the correct frames to suit a face is part science and part art. We have a myriad of different shaped faces, skin tones and eye colours. A great looking pair of frames can look great on a stand, but not so good when you wear them. Fortunately staff at Ivan R Cammack are experienced enough to help and advise you on what frame suits you. However, we are fast approaching the party season and perhaps it might be time to break the rules and have some fun with our frame selection. Designers such as Jimmy Choo and Dior have the vision to bring colour, style and glamour to your look. Ivan R Cammack have in stock a vast array of frames from both these top brands to choose from.

14. Thame Out

Jimmy Choo worked at two design companies for a total of nine years before opening his own business. Choo’s parents moved to Britain to help him get started, and he eventually expanded the business by opening his own shop in 1986 (coincidently the same year that Ivan R Cammack opened in Thame), renting an old hospital building. His craftsmanship and designs were soon noticed at London Fashion Week in 1988. After seeing his creations, Vogue featured the shoes in an eight page spread. Choo has said that his designs became significantly more popular after the Vogue coverage. Patronage from Diana, Princess of Wales in the early 1990s further boosted his image. In 1996, Choo co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd with British Vogue magazine accessories editor Tamara Mellon. He has since concentrated his work on the

exclusive Jimmy Choo couture line. He has also created a ready-to-wear line that has expanded to include accessories such as handbags. He has now transferred his design talent and flair for individuality to his range of eyeware. The current DIOR collection lends subtle nods to its heritage. One of these details is the use of cannage, a pattern made of a rattan type material used to cover the chairs at the original DIOR boutique, still present on Avenue Montaigne, Paris. This pattern and material became synonymous with a visit to the boutique as following a bespoke consultation with Mr. Dior his guests would leave with this pattern imprinted into their clothing. Those in the know would then see that this person had been imprinted following their consultation with DIOR signifying that they were special.

The oval detail seen on the red frame is a nod to the shape of the backs of the chair also present at the Avenue Montaigne, Paris boutique. This is also the shape of the reception room. The boutique is currently closed to visitors as it is being transformed into a DIOR museum. In keeping with the party theme, why not join Ivan R Cammack in celebrating the festive season. The Thame outlet will be hosting a Christmas party on Saturday the 10th December. You can meet the team, enjoy a drink and nibbles and enter a competition to win a super Hamper. Our Eyeplan Members can enter the draw for a second John Lewis Festive Hamper - just bring in your Christmas postcard, and join the party. There is also a raffle in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind. Naturally Ivan R Cammack are committed to highly professional eye care. We should all keep a wary eye on our eyesight, so eye examinations will also be available on the day. On Saturday the 3oth November, Ivan R Cammack will be hosting an exclusive Jimmy Choo event (see the advert on page 17). Then you will be able to view the entire Jimmy Choo range in the Thame practice. If you are in the frame of mind for a party, come along.

The cold facts Winter is tough on our skin. Emma Rothery from ERA Skin & Laser Clinic explains some of the best treatments to try at this time of year and what benefits you can expect.

W

inter is traditionally the hardest time of year for our skin with multiple factors such as central heating, air-conditioning and the cold weather all playing havoc with our skin, leading to dry, dull complexions. Not all is lost though, as the one benefit of winter is that it’s a great time to try noninvasive skin treatments, such as laser hair removal, facial peels and micro-needling – all these treatments are suitable for this time of year as the lack of sun helps with healing time. ADVANCED FACIALS AND FACIAL PEELS The benefits of regular facials are well known, but if you’re looking for something that works harder, an advanced facial could be the answer you’ve been looking for. Beth one of ERA’s therapists says “Unlike traditional cream on/cream off type facials, the advanced facials we offer utilise the latest technology, like radiofrequency and ultrasound to physically lift and tighten skin as well as to actively target common skin woes such as acne and blocked pores. Another perfect treatment to consider at this time of year is a facial peel - also known as a chemical peel. This is a cosmetic chemical treatment that helps reduce the appearance of freckles, age spots, acne scarring and any number of other skin irregularities on the face. fine lines and wrinkles, giving new life to sun-damaged skin. Emma says, “We recently launched a new range of peels, as part of our DCL Skincare launch last month. DCL is a clinically proven range of skincare products, with a range to suit all skin types.“ ERA’s clients were treated to a live demonstration of the Epi Peel and Bio C Peel, by Dr Zue, an experienced aesthetic doctor, who discussed the benefits of these peels for anti-aging and skin brightening, with no down-time, making them the perfect winter treatment if you want to look fabulous this Christmas!” Emma explains. “Depending on your desired outcome, peels work at various skin depths. Our most popular peels are the Glycolic peel (mild), and the ME-Line TCA peel (medium). These work underneath the skin to achieve amazing results.” Whilst results are evident after only one session, monthly treatments are recommended throughout the winter months to have your skin looking and feeling amazing by Spring! Emma adds, “After a peel treatment your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, even during the winter months, so it is important that you use a high factor 30 or above UVA/UVB sunscreen. Infact, using an SPF should be part of your daily skin routine, all year round, as it helps to protect your skin and prevent further sun related

blemishes from appearing.” After a peel treatment you can expect smoother skin which will gradually improve as new skin cells form. SKIN PEN® SKIN NEEDLING Micro-needling relies on the body’s self-heal mechanism – producing tiny puncture wounds in the skin, which stimulates the body to produce more collagen to compensate and in turn gives the skin a plumper skin and a healthy glow. It is also very effective when used to treat blemishes such as scars, stretch marks and even cellulite. Unlike older types of dermal rollers, SkinPen® incorporates the latest advancements in micro-needling technology to be able to reach difficult and delicate areas such as the skin around the nose and mouth. All the needle cartridges are sterile and disposable for your safety. Downtime is minimal and you can immediately hide any redness with mineral makeup and carry on with your day without anyone knowing you just stepped out of the skin clinic. Body and mind Yoga originated in India some 3,000 years ago as a discipline that brought balance and harmony to body and soul. Today it is increasingly popular as a way of coping with the stresses and strains of modern life, writes Jane Dale.

Y

oga is a general term, like wellbeing, and comes from the Sanskrit root word, yuj, meaning to unite or to yoke. What are being yoked or joined are the soul, mind and body. Yoga has a long history as a

20. Thame Out

philosophical system in India, reaching back to the Vedic and Upanishadic Hindu texts of 1,000 BC. There are a number of forms of yoga: Karma, Bhakti, Jnana and Raja. The form most commonly practised in the West

at least is Hatha, which is related to Raja yoga and which is seen as the yoga of physical action – a purification of the body that leads to a similar purification of the mind. With its emphasis on the body, Hatha has given us the series of postures with which yoga is now associated. “Everyone can practise yoga, regardless of their age, their sex, or their ability,” explains Ginny Moffett of the Space Yoga and Healing Studio in Thame. “Yoga gives us a holistic approach to the body, mind and spirit and can provide us with the tools we often need to deal with all the challenges of hectic, stressful lives.” Some people, Ginny says, are drawn to yoga simply because they want to keep fit and healthy. Others are looking for a way of relieving a specific physical condition, like backache or a chronic illness. Others again want a way of managing the stresses of their jobs. Yoga classes, Ginny continues, can be tailored to suit people with very different needs or capacities for exercise: “At the Space we have classes for pregnant women. We also have classes for those who are less able bodied.” Yoga she says is ideal for anyone who wants to make their bodies more supple and more responsive, or who wants to tone their muscles, or who wants to learn good relaxation techniques. But Ginny insists that yoga goes beyond mere fitness. “By making yoga a part of your daily routine,” she says, “you may start to become aware of subtle changes in your approach to life as a whole. That as your body learns how to calm and relax, so too does your mind. You may well even begin to glimpse an inner peace.” A joining, then, of body and of mind and of spirit, which, after all, has always been the ancient aim of yoga.

A river runs through it

10 reasons why a luxury river cruise is the best way to see Europe.

W

hen luxury travellers begin planning a European holiday, they often start with a “bucket list”. Everything from exploring grand palaces to savouring culinary delights, from interacting with locals to viewing art treasures or going on eco-adventures. Tasting local wines, gazing at iconic buildings, seeing stunning scenery and having a customized “just for me” experience are other desires. Spear Travels offer you 10 reasons why a luxury river cruise can be the most efficient, enjoyable and pampering way to do all that. 1 DELVE DEEPER, DON’T SKIRT THE EDGES On an ocean cruise, the ship calls at ports touching the continent’s edges. Guests often travel by motorcoach, sometimes an hour or two, to reach their desired interior destination. In contrast, a luxury river cruise can transport cruisers into the heart of a country or region. Guests wake up after a restful night’s sleep on their floating five-star hotel, enjoy breakfast onboard, and simply walk out in to, for example, the sites of Venice. The experience is timeefficient, and the simplicity is priceless.

22. Thame Out

2 RELAX WITH ALL INCLUSIVE FEATURES It’s a “no brainer.” More is better than less, especially when it comes to value-added inclusions guests receive on a luxury river voyage. Once they sail, they just want to relax and enjoy the experience. It’s important to compare river cruise products. It’s not one size fits all. A luxury river cruise fare can include such features as flights, gratuities; in-suite butler service; speciality dining; unlimited beverages (bottled water, sodas, wine, beer and even premium wines and spirits); all transfers; and even curated shore excursions led by expert English-speaking guides. 3 UNPACK ONLY ONCE ONBOARD If travellers stay in a luxury hotel or resort and move from city to city throughout Europe, they’ll have to pack and unpack multiple times. That also can happen on tour vacations or back-to-back city stays. But on a luxury cruise, they’ll unpack just once, and then don’t even have to do that if they choose a line that has butlers who will graciously and carefully unpack for a guest and repack the bags when it’s time to return home.

4 STAY ACTIVE WHILE EXPLORING EUROPE Travellers who pride themselves on fitness can maintain their regular fitness regimen, while sailing through Europe. After the vessel docks in such destinations as Chioggia, Italy, cruisers can take an organized walking or biking excursion or head out independently, using the high-quality bicycles and Nordic walking sticks carried by the line for guest use. Top river lines offer many great adventures and private tours. Back onboard, river ships have small, well- equipped wellness and exercise centres with state-of-the-art equipment, plus such activities as Pilates or yoga classes. 5 STAY CONNECTED WITH TECHNOLOGY Luxury vessels offer complimentary Wi-Fi/ Internet access, enabling travellers to stay in touch with family and friends back home. Most importantly, travellers can quickly post those “bragging rights” selfies of the Venice lagoon, Pasta making in Bologna or even sharing your private afterhours experience to St. Marks Basilica, without the crowds, only available on a Uniworld River Cruise. Easy access to Wi-Fi provides plenty of time to surf the net before cocktails and dinner.

Venice

6 EXPECT, AND GET, IMPECCABLE SERVICE Luxury river cruising translates into impeccable, personalized service provided by an experienced onboard crew. The prime goal is to make the guest’s sailing experience a perfect 10. For example, a concierge or the guest’s private butler can arrange an al fresco romantic dinner on the guest’s private balcony, book spa treatments, set up shore adventures or arrange for a reservation at a Michelinstar restaurant ashore. Seeing Europe on a luxury vessel serving 130 guests, for example, is far different than seeing it on

an ocean ship carrying thousands. Luxury river ships also have a high guest-to-staff ratio — assuring personalized attention. 7 SAVOUR GOURMET DINING AND FARM-TO-TABLE FRESHNESS What’s better than mouth-watering gourmet cuisine created by master chefs? How about fresh, local, farm-to-table cuisine? Luxury river cruise guests can have both. They can order succulent prime rib, lobster or other favourites creatively prepared, but they can also try such regional specialities as Prosciutto di Parma pizza and Osso Buco Milanese. Meats and vegetables are sourced by luxury river lines from local farms and fresh markets, often only a few miles away from the ship. Seafood and fish are often “same day fresh” — caught in the morning by local fishermen and served at night for dinner on the river vessel. 8 “OOH AND AAH” AT THE HIGH-END ACCOMMODATIONS It’s a fact: Not all river cruise accommodations are created equal. It’s important for those seeking luxury to pick a river line that offers staterooms and suites that double as “enclaves of luxury. Look for upscale accommodations that have separate sitting areas, wet bars, dining space for multiple people, marble bathrooms with rainforest showers and soaking tubs, personalized stationery, butler service, lovely artwork, and private or French balconies, among other perks. 9 IMBIBE TOP WINES, BREWS AND SPIRITS Whether it’s wine tasting conducted onboard by a vintner or ashore, guests can delve into local culture through the wines, beers and spirits the locals enjoy. Why not head ashore in Italy, to taste the famous prosecco at a local bacaro (a casual wine bar) during the venetian version of happy hour, called ombra e cicchetti?

10 SAIL ON AN ENRICHING JOURNEY A luxury river cruise is a “complete experience.” Travellers don’t just see the sights, they delve into the culture, sample the cuisine, meet local people and enjoy exclusive experiences such as curated shore adventures and special events. Enriching lectures set the stage too, with expert speakers in theatre, archaeology, culinary arts, history, politics, geology, winemaking and so on.

“E

very year I go out of my way to find something a little bit different for my customers to decorate their home at Christmas, so they can add and enhance to the decorations they already have. “A first for the shop this year are Gonks! Also known as Tomte in Sweden, Tonttu in Finland, Nisse in Norway and Denmark, they are mythological white bearded creatures resembling garden gnomes, which were once seen as home protectors. These characters wearing knitted hats arriving from the Scandinavian folklore are now considered the Nordic version of our Santa Claus. “According to legend Gonks were powerful guardians protecting farms from potential misfortune. “Today, Gonks are mostly associated with Christmas but unlike Santa who comes down the chimney, Gonks prefer

to knock at the front door and hand out their gifts to impatient children! “The smallest Gonk is two inches and the largest is four foot tall!! “Apart from Christmas decorations there are a wonderful array of silver and gold plated jewellery from @cabbagewhite and gorgeous huggies and studs from @screampretty. “A new item for your ears are ear cuffs. We also have striking necklaces and earrings from @rosapietsch which are great for parties and festive nights out. “Velvet is perfect at this time of year and in the shop are some gorgeous makeup bags from @sixton and @vanillafly. Recently I was thrilled to hear a customer saying this was the best stock they had ever seen! So lovely to here this feed back as it takes such a long time to source and display.

After the huge success of a recent late night shopping evening, White Hart Studio is having another late night event on Thursday 5th December, serving prosecco and mince pies next to the wood burning stove.. F Christmas in Thame

You don’t need to go far to find those Christmas presents. Thame’s streets are designed for a fantastic Christmas shopping experience.

Quality streets T

hame has a long history. People have lived here since prehistoric times. But it was from the 12th Century that the town was designed for shopping It was then that the Bishop of Lincoln, as lord of the manor, decided to create a new town at Thame. Many new towns were being planned out and created at the time. The population was growing and trade expanding The bishop took land that was being farmed directly for his benefit and laid out a new planned town over it. The result is Thame’s famous wide High Street. The original open space, with its angled sides, was deliberately constructed to accommodate the market in the twelfth century. Over time, market stalls in the open space started turning into permanent structures. Some of the buildings around the Birdcage in Thame, and the Birdcage itself, are examples of buildings built within the open marketplace. Thame is

noted for the way the medieval plan of the town has survived. We can still get a feeling of entering a structured space when we enter Thame High Street. It is at this time of year, this dark mid-winter that the town really dazzles. Christmas lights adorn the ancient buildings and twinkle on the huge Christmas Tree outside the Town Hall. Welcoming light and warmth emanating from shops, pubs and restaurants welcome us in. Men’s and women’s fashions, cosmetics, food and drink, books, art, gifts, toys, whatever you are looking for, it can be found on Thame’s High street, North Street, East Street or in the Buttermarket. Why not do yourself and your local independent business’s a favour and carry out your Christmas Shopping locally.

Fore Golf in Thame has changed its name to Domino. Menswear, formal wear and golf wear all under one roof.

D

omino has been a family run business since 1976 and has been a fixture of the Buttermarket in Thame for 24 years. The change in name is to reflect the changing nature of the business. Previously called Fore Golf, as the name suggested, the shop stocked predominantly golf wear. What some customers failed to realise was the shop also stocked menswear and formal wear. Domino will continue to provide clothing and accessories for the golf enthusiast. However, extra space has been created so owners Vic and Kristian can stock even more menswear and formal wear. I’m sure this is good news to those gentlemen who are still mourning the closure of Austins on the High Street. You can look your best on the course with golf and leisure wear apparel that include brands such as Under Armour, Bruhl and Fynch Hatton. The store carry a wide selection of golf shirts, hats, winter trousers, outerwear, and much more.

The menswear section has shelves and rails displaying shirts, jackets, trousers, jumpers and hats from a host of trusted brands. Wander through to the room at the rear of the shop and you will find the formal wear. Domino have built up a first class reputation, with many kind customer reviews for their formal wear services over the years. Customers travel from far and wide. They have dressed gentlemen and boys for weddings, Royal Ascot, School proms and corporate events and so on. Stocking a large range to hire or to buy, including morning suits, lounge suits - regular fit and the popular slim fit. Dinner suits, Highland wear, Masonic suits. Plus an ever growing range of accessories. Whatever you require for that special occasion, you’ll find it at Domino. But what really sets Father and Son, Vic and Kristian apart is their years of experience in selecting and fitting items. Inside this ancient building in the heart of Thame you will find some good old fashioned expertise and service.

Is it curtains for traditional window dressing? Steven Moore discovers why Shutters are proving so popular.

The art of the louvre

W

hen I think of shuttered windows, I think of houses clustered along a Mediterranean coastline. Actually, they have a long history in this country of protecting our windows. Shutters date back to Medieval times when glass was an expensive luxury. It is thought the French king, Louis XIV introduced adjustable slats so he could spy on his subjects. Now known as Louvres, named after the famous museum in Paris that was the Kings previous home. As glass became more affordable, shutters declined in popularity. However, today, the shutter is making a comeback. Talking to Just Shutters owner James Chenery, I can understand why. He took me through some of the benefits of installing window shutters.

Firstly, the design. “They look incredibly stylish and turn any room into something very special. It’s amazing how much bigger and brighter a room seems after shutters have been fitted. They increase a homes ‘kerb appeal’,” says James “Our shutters come in many different styles and are designed to fit any window from awkwardly shaped arched windows and fitted into a roof shape for example to Patio doors that slide open. They can be full height or Café style (half window height). They can be Tier on Tier, where one window opens independently of the other,” he adds. “As for colours, white is most definitely the most popular choice. However, we can colour match our shutters to any colour you want. We recently matched shutters to a customers pink kitchen splashback. “Secondly, their practicality. Today’s louvre shutters give the ultimate control over how much light enters the room protecting it from harmful UV rays,” says James. “Insulation as well. Shutters provides an extra barrier between the glass and the exterior, keeping heat in and cold out,” adds James.

“For Asthma sufferers or anyone who struggles with allergies, Shutters are an excellent alternative to curtains,”he says. At this point Jame’s wife and business partner Charlotte interjects. “I have a one year old child and hearing some of the horror stories of children accidently choking on hanging chords, I’m pleased to say, that couldn’t happen in our home. Shutters don’t have chords,” she says. “Shutters also provide the ultimate in privacy control, especially during the day when natural light is needed in the room and they are an excellent deterrent to intruders,” James concludes. It’s pretty clear talking to James and Charlotte just how enthusiastic they are for their product. Just Shutters is a family business based in Holton. As a new customer, you will deal just with James himself. He will come to you bringing with him his samples, offer his expert unbiased advice and leave you with a no obligation quote on the day – no waiting for days and days to receive said quote. If you decide to go ahead, it will be James who you will deal with throughout the process and it will be James who actually fits the shutters (with occasional help from Charlotte). Shutters. A practical alternative to blinds and curtains that will make your home pretty as a picture.

Hidden talent For Kingsey Kitchens & Interiors it’s not just how a kitchen looks on the surface, it’s also about the innovative design you don’t immediately see.

A

beautiful kitchen on the outside, naturally. A brilliant one on the inside, of course. The latest project from Kingsey Kitchens & Interiors is a lovely kitchen/ diner in an old property in Chearsley and it’s the sort of installation that really shows off Kingsey’s skills for a truly bespoke kitchen. Originally the space at the rear of the property consisted of three small areas -the kitchen, dining room and a corridor that led to the back door. So before the team could apply their dexterous design skills, a little brute force was required. The builders took down the interior walls. This provided a superbly spacious area for Kingsey to go to work with. A distinctive feature of the room is the end wall. Already stripped back to the original bare brickwork, it features an old original bread oven, fire place and larder. The fire place was enlarged by the builders to house a range cooker and hood. Kingsey restored the larder to include shelving and space for a microwave oven (no easy task given the fact the walls were anything but straight). This feature wall and super flagstone floor contrast nicely with the modernity of the rest of the kitchen, especially with the opposite wall. Here Kingsey built some storage cupboards that run neatly

42. Thame Out

along what was once just a corridor wall. Flush to the wall, the storage includes a fridge/freezer by Fisher & Paykel. It’s a French style fridge/freezer with integral drawers and doors, A very unusual and rare style, unlike the more conventional stand alone designs. The grill located near the floor is the only clue to the fridge/ freezers location. What you will notice is the quirky bespoke floor to ceiling wine rack. Neatly fitted at the end of the row of cupboards with colour change lighting. The central island doubles up as a breakfast bar. Floor level lighting gives the impression that it floats. Kingsey Kitchens & Interiors are the masters of working with older properties where walls, floors and ceilings that are very rarely straight or level. Here for example, the kitchen window was below worktop height so to enable the Customer to keep the pre existing window Kingsey designed the worktop to create a dropped window cill, which was clad in the same stone as the worktop. Kingsey Kitchens & Interiors are forever mindful of a Clients budget. They will seek to enhance a kitchen without spending money unnecessarily. A case in point in this Chearsley kitchen was the dining table. Not wanting to throw away a much loved but tired looking table, Kingsey took it back to their workshop. There

‘Floating’ Island

Spot the Fridge/Freezer

they re-sized it, sanded it, and re-laquered it. This new piece of wood now forms an extension to the Island for a small eating area. The work on the dining table is typical of the bespoke nature of Kingsey’s attention to detail. This is apparent even in the most mundane parts of a kitchen. A lot of work went into re-configuring an old cupboard that stored the electrics. The customer needed somewhere to store the ironing board.

The solution? Cover the electrics with a hinged Perspex door (for easy access) and build in shelving and a custom built area to fit the ironing board. Not the most glamorous part of the new kitchen, but a hugely important and practical solution requested by the customer. From the mundane to the magnificent, whatever you want designed and built into your new kitchen, Kingsey Kitchens & Interiors will do it.

Autumn delights The weird and wonderful world of Fungi with Four Seasons Tree Care owner, Matt Vaughan.

E

veryone can enjoy the splendour of the Autumn colours in our local woodlands at this time of year. In this edition, I thought I would highlight some of the strange and lesser known fungi that can be found growing on trees throughout the year but especially in the Autumn months. There are hundreds of species of fungi associated with trees in this country. Many of these can cause trees to become diseased and unsafe as they degrade wood and affect the structural integrity of roots, stems and branches. As trained arborists, we need to have a good knowledge of these fungi and how they interact with the trees that we are responsible for. I have picked out a selection of fungi that I have found and photographed on trees this year. All of them impact on tree health and safety to varying degrees.

46. Thame Out

Phaeoluus schwientitzii – The Dyer’s Mazegill

Phaeoluus schwientitzii – The Dyer’s Mazegill and Fomitopsis pinicola – The Red-Banded Polypore Both of these weird looking fungi can be found growing as ‘brackets’ at the base of large old conifers. The fresh growth of new brackets are sometimes seen in late Summer through into the Autumn. They both cause a brown rot in the heartwood of affected trees. When this decay becomes more established this can lead to a sudden fracture and windthrow of affected trees. Neither of these fungi are commonly found in garden trees but something that as arborists we should be aware of when we are inspecting trees because they can have implications for tree safety although trees may live on for many years with these fungi slowly digesting the heartwood.

Kretzscmaria deusta – Brittle Cinder

It causes a white rot in the buttress and main roots that can kill off trees within a couple of years and will increase the risk of windthrow as roots become increasingly Armillaria mellea – Honey Fungus decayed. There are no easy solutions to this The next fungus that is shown below when it becomes established in a garden is Armillaria mellea, commonly know environment. We generally recommend as Honey Fungus. It carries a justifiably fearsome reputation for wreaking havoc in removal of infected trees as well as their stumps and replacement with species that gardens. This is a common fungus, found Practical storage are more resistant to the fungus. on a wide range of trees and shrubs.

Fomes fomitarius Another bracket fungus often seen on broadleaved trees is Fomes fomitarius, commonly known as Tinder Fungus. This also causes a white rot on a range of broadleaved trees, sometimes in the main stem but also in larger limbs and can lead to a brittle fracture in infected trees. It is called Tinder Fungus because when dried it can take a spark to produce a smouldering ember from which a fire can be started. This was a vital skill to prehistoric man going back thousands of years and still used today amongst bushcraft enthusiasts.

Fomitopsis pinicola – The Red-Banded Polypore

Kretzscmaria deusta – Brittle Cinder This fungus really is a nasty little rotter ! Kretzchmaria deusta, or Brittle Cinder is a common fungus on mature broadleaved trees, especially Beech, Lime and Horse Chestnut. It causes a soft rot through the base of trees close to ground level that can lead to a sudden fracture even on windless days. It is easy to miss as it blends in with the bark, hidden between the buttress roots on otherwise healthy looking trees. This is definitely one that we look out for when we carry out tree inspections for clients, particularly on larger old trees close to property and roads. Grifola frondosa – Hen of the Woods. Another fungus found in the Autumn months is Grifola frondosa or Hen of the Woods. This produces a white rot in the base and buttress roots of mainly older Oak and Sweet Chestnut trees. In Japanese culture this fungus is known as ‘Maitake’ and is gathered for its culinary and medicinal qualities. Fomes fomitarius Grifola frondosa – Hen of the Woods.

So, if you have any concerns for the safety of trees on your property or feel that some expert tree surgery may be appropriate then please do give Four Seasons Tree Care a call.

2020 vision As we head towards 2020, Ridgeway Kitchens are ringing in the changes. A new improved showroom, new suppliers and a new sense of optimism.

W

ho knows what the ramifications of Brexit will really be. Whatever happens though, Ridgeway Kitchens are tackling it head on. Despite these uncertain times, Ridgeway are determined to bring their customers the most attentive service and the keenest prices possible. As it happens, I can vouch for the excellent after service. Our kitchen was designed and installed by Ridgeway seven years ago. When I mentioned an issue with a storage bin, Ridgeway were happy to supply the replacement part free of charge – I had broken it. There are a host of kitchen suppliers advertising on television at the moment, I’m pretty sure they would not offer the sort of personal service supplied by Ridgeway Kitchens.

48. Thame Out

Of course it helps if your kitchen supplier/fitter has a varied range of excellent styles to choose from, and a menu of price options. Ridgeway tick both those boxes. THE SHOWROOM So what’s new for the New Year? Firstly, the newly re-fitted showroom. Bright and spacious it boasts an impressive range of English and German kitchens. Created to cater for all tastes. You will find all styles from über-stylish, minimalistic, handleless designs to bespoke, timeless, to traditional kitchens. New to the range is ‘Masterclass’. An award winning British company that is regularly featured in home and interiors magazines.

Choice is at the heart of every Masterclass kitchen design. You can choose a Modern, Shaker, Classic or Handleless style and all have the quality to last a lifetime. Masterclass have recognised that customers are using the Kitchen as a Kitchen/Diner or family room. As a result they have designed cupboards, dining tables and chairs to match seemlessly with the kitchen units.

WORKING WITH DEVELOPERS, BUILDING COMPANIES AND ARCHITECTS. Ridgeway Kitchens have over the years built up excellent working relationships with developers, building companies and architects. New for 2020 is the fact that Ridgeway Kitchens are now an associate contract supplier with Nobilia UK. Intelligently

engineered kitchens coupled with superb design. Nobilia kitchens capture many peoples’ attitude towards life with something for every taste, and they also impress with their attractive value for money. It’s just one of the installations that make Haddenham Garden Centre a picture at Christmas. A stunning re-development of the Garden Centre is virtually finished. Increased in size and re-configured for the benefit of its customers, it is now well and truly geared up for Christmas. Christmas Trees (real and artificial) lights, decorations, gifts, toys, clothes, food and drink. Everything in fact you need for the festive season, and all under one impressive roof. Not forgetting this is most importantly a Garden Centre, plants and gardens are still at the heart of the business. However at this time of year there is most definitely a seasonal excitement in the air. Look out for the five colour themed areas. ‘Christmas Tradition’, ‘Winter Berry’, ‘Dreaming of a White Christmas’, ‘Midnight Gold’ and ‘Country Cabin’ These are all part of the huge Christmas and gift ware department. Here you will find imaginative lights, decorations, real and artificial Christmas trees and a whole host of family gift ideas not usually found on a normal High Street. You will also find dedicated areas devoted to pets, stationary and clothing for men, women and children.

There is straw, labels and of course the basket for you to complete the hamper for you or as a gift. A hamper wouldn’t be complete without a tipple or two, would it. No problem.

The shelves groan with Wines, Spirits, Beers & Ales. Specially selected for their quality, you will find drinks from local and regional brewery’s, distilleries and vintners. With so much to explore at Haddenham Garden Centre, you might need to take a break. Here is your chance to head for Gardener’s Retreat. > FOOD & DRINK

Wine expert, Jerome Harlington explains how to pair the perfect wines with the festive season’s food.

The ideal choice or a bit of a turkey?

I

t happened last Thursday evening whilst enjoying a rewarding pint of ale with friends at The Thatch: “what are you up to this Christmas?” closely followed by, “what are the best wines to drink with turkey?” Good question I thought. Whether serving canapés at home, eating out, or picking a wine for the Christmas feast, pairing the right wine with food can make the difference between a sensory utopia of delights for the taste buds or chewing on a bar of soap. With a few basic tips, you can boost your enjoyment of eating and drinking to levels you hadn’t thought possible. Remember, wine and food is about having fun and sharing the good things in life with people you love, especially at Christmas. So here are some tips… j It’s all about the flavour To avoid your wine overpowering the dish or the flavours of the dish killing the wine, start with the biggest flavour on the plate and match it with the wine. Roast turkey wrapped in bacon with sausages full of stuffing will require a big flavoured red or white such as a robust Bordeaux red or a rich and creamy oaked Chardonnay from Burgundy; a lighter choice of wine would be completely lost, it would turn the wine into tasting like water rather than turning water into wine, pardon the biblical reference! On the other hand, a light starter of delicate fish would require a very light red or white such as a young Beaujolais or Muscadet

56. Thame Out

Sur Lie. Don’t forget whites can go very well with cheese; to give your taste buds a real treat try Sauvignon Blanc such as Sancerre with goat’s cheese. Amazing! j Think Local As well as the traditional Christmas turkey with all the trimmings, there are countless exotic alternative recipes in all the retailer magazines such as Italian style goose or Argentinean style turkey. So, pairing your international choice of dish with a wine from the same country should work superbly well. If you’re going for an Italian influenced recipe for your goose for example, try it with the best Tuscan red you can afford. j You’re the Boss Play around and experiment, decide whether your aim is for contrast or harmony. Beef Wellington is perfect with a solid red wine from the Rhone or Bordeaux but perhaps surprisingly a contrasting ultra sweet dessert wine can be absolute bliss with salty cheese such as Roquefort or a rich paté. j Don’t be scared! Salty flavours love zesty wines such as a Sauvignon Blanc or non vintage fizz. You can’t beat smoked salmon with lively Champagne. Or try spicy canapés with zingy slightly off dry whites from Alsace or Germany or even Slovenia! If you prefer reds go for fruity, bold and ripe varieties such as an Australian Cabernet or Californian Merlot.

j Throw the rule book in the air Have fun and try matching meaty fish like seabass or halibut with light reds made from red grapes such as Pinot Noir or Gamay. The more you experiment the more confident you will become with matching flavours giving a huge amount of gastronomic pleasure for everyone. And if you haven’t got time to worry about choosing the right wine then there’s no need to worry as we’ve done all the work for you. We got through a lot of wines deciding on the best match. It was a tough job but someone’s got to do it. Actually, the term ‘used cars’ is not an accurate representation of the vehicles for sale at Thame Cars. The business specialise in nearly new or ‘Perfect’ cars. * > BUSINESS

Avoid discontent this winter The right insurance can help business owners cope with the problems caused by winter weather, says Mark Nicholl.

W

ith ever increasing regularity, we hear about severe weather conditions disrupting lives and businesses. A simple burst pipe, a roof collapse, falling tree, or someone slipping on ice outside your premises, could all pose a threat to your business and saddle you with untold costs. Research carried out by the Association of British Insurers (ABI), showed that the cold weather

64. Thame Out

experienced in the UK in the winter of 2018 had huge financial implications. Insurance payments to homeowners and businesses for storm, flood and burst pipe damage increased by 290% in the first quarter of 2019, from £93 million to £361 million. In this same period, some 86,000 claims were handled, a huge increase in comparison to the 29,000 claims handled in the previous quarter. This suggests that the UK is still not adequately prepared for risks associated with winter weather.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Preparation and planning is the solution. Most prevention measures are pretty easy and straightforward, it’s about keeping on top of them, to minimise your exposure. However part of your planning needs to include checking that you have comprehensive range of property and liability insurance in place as well. THE SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO. Unfortunately, in our business we know only too well the impact events like these can have. Burst pipes due to water freezing can result in thousands of pounds in water damage. Water from burst pipes can damage walls, floors and electrics as well as your property.

Is your roof still sound and are gutters and downpipes clear? Is all your pipe insulation in good condition? A claim last year from a burst pipe left a business property completely saturated with damaged equipment and stock. Not only did they have to wait for new stock to arrive, the property had to be dried out and re-decorated before it could open for business again. They made a claim in excess of ÂŁ100,000 which was paid in full and the business was able to continue trading. Stock up on salt and clear and grit pathways and car parks. This seems obvious but left uncleared access areas can be treacherous and leave you open to a claim. As a business, or property owner, you have a duty of care and in our litigious society the costs can really add up. Expenses can include medical expenses, travel expenses and loss of earnings. But also, if the claimant requires someone to care for them then a carers claim can be made along with a general damages claim. These costs can be far reaching. Make sure your boiler service is up to date. We all know that boilers seem to break down in the winter months. So rather than leaving it to chance keep your annual boiler service up to date.

KEY INSURANCES FOR A BUSINESS TO CONSIDER: f Buildings and Contents insurance. This will ensure you are covered against the escape of water claims and damage caused by extreme weather conditions. f Business Interruption insurance. This protects you against any loss of income resulting from the incident. f Public Lability insurance covers you against slips, trips and falls suffered by a third party. f Employees Liability will cover you against slips and trips and falls suffered by your employees. If you would like to sit down and chat through your existing cover or look at taking out new cover our man in Thame is Mark Nicholl. He would be very happy to discuss your needs and advise you on any changes you may need to make. You can email him on mnicholl@jbennett.co.uk or call him direct on 01494 455 802

What’s new at the NEW THEATRE A NIGHT AT THE OPERA 24 & 25 JANUARY Enjoy a night – or two – at the opera this January with two fantastic productions at the New Theatre. La Bohème is one of the most romantic operas ever written. It tells the tragic tale of the doomed, consumptive Mimi and her love for a penniless writer. Starring Elena Dee the Korean soprano in her iconic role as Mimi and the celebrated international soprano Alyona Kistenyova. Directed by Ellen Kent, with international soloists, highly praised chorus and full orchestra, this brand new production is traditionally staged and features beautiful sets and costumes. The set reflects the Bohemian art of the period and will include, a brass band, snow effects and Muzetta’s dog will also make an entrance. This classic tale of Parisian love and loss features many famous arias including Your Tiny Hand is Frozen, They Call Me Mimi and Muzetta’s Waltz. The award-winning Madame Butterfly returns in a new production with exquisite sets including a spectacular Japanese garden and fabulous costumes including antique wedding kimonos from Japan. This production also stars Elena Dee and Alyona Kistenyova (cast for both productions may be subject to change). One of the world’s most popular operas, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly tells the heart-breaking story of the beautiful young Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant. Highlights include the melodic Humming Chorus, the moving aria One Fine Day and the unforgettable Love Duet.

CABARET 4 – 8 FEBRUARY Bill Kenwright presents Rufus Norris’ multi award-winning production of Kander and Ebb’s landmark musical, which plays at the New Theatre Oxford from February 4 – 8 as part of a UK tour Starring as the enigmatic Emcee is John Partridge, winner of Celebrity MasterChef in 2018, who is well known to TV audiences as EastEnders’ charismatic Christian Clarke, and one of West End theatre’s most prolific leading men (A Chorus Line, Chicago, and La Cage Aux Folles). The role of Sally Bowles will be played by Kara Lily Hayworth who recently won rave reviews across the country for her portrayal of Cilla Black in Cilla the Musical, after she was discovered by Bill Kenwright during the show’s nationwide TV auditions.

And joining them is singer and screen icon Anita Harris in the role of Fraulein Schneider. Anita first rose to fame as a singer in the 1960s, beginning a lifelong career as a performer and actress. She has appeared both on screen (Follow That Camel and Carry on Doctor) and on stage, most notably as Grizabella in the West End’s Cats. Cabaret features show-stopping choreography, dazzling costumes and iconic songs, including ‘Money Makes the World Go Round’, ‘Maybe This Time’ and ‘Cabaret’. Directed by critically acclaimed Rufus Norris, the production has enjoyed two smash hit West End runs at The Lyric and The Savoy theatres.

JAMIE CULLUM 16 MARCH

MILTON JONES IN MILTON IMPOSSIBLE 16 FEBRUARY

Household favourite and king of the one-liner Milton Jones is setting out on a new tour in 2020. He’s bringing the new show Milton Jones in Milton: Impossible to the New Theatre Oxford on February 16. One man. One Mission. Is it possible? No, not really. Complete with his unique style and eccentric shirts, Milton will reveal the truth behind having once been an international spy, and then being given a somewhat disappointing new identity which forced him to appear on Mock The Week (BBC Two), Live at the Apollo (BBC One), Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow (BBC One) and even headline on Dave’s One Night Stand (Dave).

Jamie Cullum is taking to the stage for a 2020 tour, Taller, which comes to the New Theatre Oxford on March 16. The critically acclaimed performer’s dynamic live performances have always captured the attention of the audience through Jamie’s undeniable energy, boundless talent and stage presence. It follows the release of his most recent album, also called Taller, which was released in June. The album sees Jamie bravely explore more personal subject matter with a fresh sense of authenticity, each song reflecting a desire to grow and learn and explore life for the beautiful muddle it is. With 10 million album sales to date and his successful BBC Radio 2 Radio show, Jamie Cullum is a celebrated musician the world over with loyal fans in every corner of the globe. With a career spanning over 20 years, his legendary live shows have seen him perform and work alongside artists as diverse as Herbie Hancock , Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar and Lang Lang, whilst the success of his major label breakthrough, ‘Twentysomething’ and its follow up ‘Catching Tales’ saw him nominated for a BRIT, Grammy and numerous other awards around the world.

This is a love story with a twist, or at least a really bad sprain. Is it all just gloriously daft nonsense, or is there a deeper meaning? Every man has his price. Sainsbury’s, where good food costs less. Milton’s last sell-out tour, Milton Jones Is Out There, saw over one hundred thousand people pack the rafters, with an entire leg of extra shows added to cater to demand, underlining his position as one of the UK’s most popular and biggest selling comedians. Milton has co-written and performed in eleven of his own radio series for BBC Radio 4 and in 2012 Another Case of Milton Jones won the Silver Sony Award for Best Comedy.
