Welcome From Our President Greetings Families, Guests, D9 Organizations and Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. My name is Brother James Waters, Jr. and I serve as President of the Eta Rho Lambda Graduate Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. It is with extreme pleasure that I welcome you all to this Annual Charles T. Lunsford Scholarship Gala. The Brothers of Alpha and Chairman Brother Thomas Green, Sr. wish you all to sit back, relax and enjoy this occasion of opulence.

On October 2, 1960, The Eta Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha was birthed when Dr. Charles T. Lunsford, Reuben Davis, Waddell Johnson, William Knox, Dr. Vantuyl Levy, Robert Morrison, Stanley Thomas, Albert Whitaker and William Wortham envisioned a local chapter of Alpha in the Rochester Community.

Then, Dr. Lunsford was a pillar in the Rochester community, serving as the first African American physician in the City. As a practicing physician, Dr. Lunsford would travel to homes of his patients when they were ill.

When there was a need beyond the homes, he would see patients at the now owned "Alpha House" located at 718 South Plymouth Avenue.

Today, the Brothers of Alpha continue to be servant leaders in this community, such as Dr. Lunsford while providing Scholarship, Community Service and Brotherly Love to all that cross the "Black and Old Gold Path" of Alpha Men near and far.

The Eta Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha has fostered and maintained a strong tradition of "Manly Deeds by collecting and distributing food to the less fortunate during the holiday seasons and providing support to the elderly, "Scholarships" in the distribution of more than $90,000 in academic awards to graduating seniors, and "Love for All Mankind" by forming and fostering relationships with Black Greek Letter/Social Organizations and local County and City collaborations.

Eta Rho Lambda Alphas remain steadfast while being "First of All, Servants to All and Transcending all to be the best that one can be.

It is my prayer that you all remain faithful and prayerful for those that are sick and shut in, leadership across the nation, and those generations of youth coming after and before us in their preparation for this quest called "Life".

Finally, I leave with you all a quote by the late great Brother Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as many Alpha men across the nation remain socially conscientious regarding the tasks placed before us: "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, 'Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.�

Dear Men of Alpha Phi Alpha: On behalf of the City of Rochester, I’d like to congratulate and commend the brothers of Eta Rho Lambda Chapter for once again hosting your annual Dr. Charles T. Lunsford Black and Gold Gala.

This event has become one of the most highly anticipated social occasions in the Rochester community, not just because attendees are guaranteed to have an evening of fun and great entertainment, but also because proceeds are used for such a worthwhile endeavor as the education of our youth.

Through your efforts, scholarships totaling more than $5,000 were awarded last year to college-bound African-American young men who were in need of assistance to further their educations. How fitting that your scholarship gala is named in honor of one of your Chapter’s founding members, Dr. Charles T. Lundsford, a highly educated man of color who broke down barriers, achieved greatness, and contributed immensely to our community. Dr. Lundsford would be extremely proud of the work you are doing to educate young men so that they, too, can succeed and ultimately achieve their own levels of greatness.

Eta Rho Lambda Chapter’s support of the Rochester community extends well beyond the dissemination of scholarship money to deserving students. Your commitment to advancing voter registration, leadership development, and the eradication of birth defects through your participation with the March of Dimes has not gone unnoticed. Most certainly, your volunteer efforts with City initiatives such as Clean Sweep and our annual Distinguished Gentlemen youth event are deeply appreciated.

The work you do throughout the year helps make Rochester a better place for the people who call this city home. I am proud to count the distinguished men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Eta Rho Lambda Chapter, among my partners as we work together to achieve my mission for Rochester: more jobs, safer and more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities for all residents.

HISTORY OF ETA RHO LAMBDA CHAPTER

On March 23, 1925 Rho Lambda Chapter of Buffalo, New York was established to serve both Buffalo and Rochester, New York. After many years of traveling to and from Rochester to Buffalo for meetings, it was decided that with a growing population of Alpha Men in Rochester that a chapter should be established to serve the local Alphas.

On October 2, 1960, Eta Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was established. The Charter members were: Reuben Davis, Waddell Johnson, William Knox, Dr. Vantuyl Levy, Dr. Charles T. Lunsford, Robert Morrison, Stanley Thomas, Albert Whitaker and William Wortham.

In 1977, Eta Rho Lambda Chapter sponsored the chartering of Mu Sigma Chapter at the University of Rochester under the guidance of Brothers William Davis and Charles Champion.

In 1987, Rho Alpha was established on the campus of SUNY Brockport under the guidance of Brother Rufus McGee. In 2014, Upsilon Pi was established on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges under the guidance of Dr. Montrose A. Streeter.

Since its founding, the Eta Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha has strived to provide services to the community. Many of its members have been active in all levels of community activities declaring human brotherhood as a workable creed and not merely a visionary ideal.

The chapter has fostered and maintained a strong tradition of scholarship and established the Charles T. Lunsford Scholarship Fund providing college funds for deserving males. The chapter’s signature event held each year is called The Charles T. Lunsford Black and Gold Scholarship Gala. The Chapter has provided education in voting with its “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” campaign. The chapter maintains a close relationship with Big Brothers, Big Sisters where several brothers have served either on the board or as Big Brothers. Additional alliances are held with the local Boy Scouts (Troop and Pack #169) and other Masonic and Greek organizations that have assisted in generating funds for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. In 2006, the first annual tribute to posthumously inducted Alpha Brother Frederick Douglas was held on December 27th, at his grave site in Rochester, NY.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Eta Rho Lambda Chapter THE FOUNDING OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA Alpha Phi Alpha is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men. It was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.

A Voteless People is a Hopeless People “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” (aka VPHP) was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930’s when many African-Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process.

Voter education and registration have remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990’s, the focus shifted to include political awareness and empowerment, delivered most frequently through town meetings and candidate forums.

Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College The “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” program, established in 1922, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement.

Project Alpha This collaborative project is designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young male’s ages 12-15 years. Designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention, Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers.

Alpha Award of Service Thomas Green, Sr. Mr. Green is a native of Rochester, New York. A diversified professional with an entrepreneurial spirit and proven ability to succeed, Mr. Green is a Christian who characterizes himself as a servant-leader. The servant-leader is servant first. This leadership style begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve first. He is a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity where he has served as the chairman of the Dr. Charles T. Lunsford Black and Gold Gala for the past 3 years.

Mr. Green has earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the State University College at Brockport and a Master of Science in Strategic Leadership from Roberts Wesleyan College. He also holds the distinguished Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) from the Project Management Institute and a certification as a HIPPA Security Professional (CHSP). Mr. Green has over 30 years of experience in Information Technology. His experience includes Government, Notfor-profit, Health Care and IT consulting. He has served on numerous boards and committees throughout the City and State. He is a graduate of the United Way of Greater Rochester African American Leadership Development Program (AALDP) and a graduate of the Lucy E. Campbell Music Workshop, National Baptist Convention.

Mr. Green has been a faithful member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church since 1982, where he currently serves as Minister of Music. His favorite bible verse is Proverb 3:5-6; “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” His life’s theme is “If I can help somebody, as I pass along; If I can cheer somebody, with a word or song; If I can show somebody, that he's travelling wrong; Then my living shall not be in vain” Through his professional career and volunteer service he has provided impact in the areas of job development, spirituality, healthy living, healthcare, self-sufficiency, educational scholarship, student musical scholarship, mentoring, music instruction, ministry music, community and family dispute settlement, youth development and much more.

He currently serves as the head of the Information Technology Department for the Anthony Jordan Health Center. He also serves as an instructor at the University of Rochester and as an associate for Strategic Community Intervention, Inc. Mr. Green is married to Dr. Shirley JA Green. They are the proud parents of two children; Courtney Denise - Masters of Science in Marketing (University of Newcastle in Newcastle, Australia,) and Thomas Terrell, Jr., Master of Business Administration (St. Bonaventure University).

Charles J.L. Banks Community Service Award André M. Langston Andre’ M. Langston, is the current President and Chief Operating Officer of WDKX radio. Mr. Langston is married with one child and completed his education at Michigan State University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Communication & Advertising.

Mr. Langston is involved with several boards and community activities including JP Wilmot Cancer Center, Rochester Razor Sharks, SUNY Brockport, NYS Sports and Celebrity Gala and Green Acres Community Center.

Keeping with its Urban Contemporary format, WDKX chose its call letters to honor Black heroes in society. WDKX stands for •W stands for radio stations located east of the Mississippi River •D stands for Frederick Douglass •K stands for Martin Luther King, Jr. •X stands for Malcolm X Monroe County Broadcasting Co., LTD. formed a corporation in 1968 to compete for the available FM frequency 103.9 in Monroe County, Rochester NY. WDKX commenced broadcasting on April 6, 1974 at 5:30 AM and has been broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week ever since. WDKX has the distinction of being under the same ownership since its inception and is one of two remaining urban stations in the state of New York.

Having previously received the first ever Pioneer Award from the Rochester Radio Broadcasters Hall of Fame, Andrew A. Langston, founder, owner and general manager of 103.9 WDKX FM, was among the inaugural inductees into the New York State Broadcasters Associations Hall of Fame in June 2014.

Alpha Award of Merit/Achievement Roderick Spratling Mr. Spratling is a 1976 graduate of Michigan State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Engineering; and is also a 2004 Rochester Institute of Technology graduate with a Master of Science degree in Manufacturing Management and Leadership. He began his career in 1976 with Xerox Corporation, and progressed from Associate Engineer to Packaging Engineering Manager, and from there, performed other engineering and manufacturing jobs, concluding his 40 year career in November, 2016, as a Supplier Quality Engineer.

Throughout his time in Rochester, he has volunteered to help students succeed through various city wide programs, beginning with PRIS2M, (Program in Rochester to Interest Students in Science and Math), and currently a mentor to a young man in Big Brothers Big Sisters. Mr. Spratling is also a health enthusiast and annually participates in biking and walking fundraisers for March of Dimes Walk for Babies, Tour de Cure (Diabetes), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Marietta G. Avery/Action for a Better Community Walk for Self-Sufficiency and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Walk for Education. Lastly, to listeners of WDKX Saturday oldies programming, Mr. Spratling is known as "The Captain", for spearheading Saturday and Sunday morning bike rides.

Mr. Spratling is married to Brenda Evans - Spratling and they are the loving parents of two children: Brionna Elise, Associate Business Degree, Monroe Community College; Licensed Practical Nurse and Phlebotomist; and Brycen Evan, University of Pittsburgh, Bachelor of Science, Forensic Science and Administrative Justice; and current American record holder in 500M sprint. Mr. Spratling is also blessed with one grandson, Isaiah Matthew, age 3.

President’s Award Rev. Dr. Vera E. Miller Rev. Dr. Vera E. Miller was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the last of five children to Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Evans, Sr. She attended elementary schools in both Alpharetta and Smyrna, Georgia, and graduated from the Lemon Street High School in Marietta, Georgia. From there she earned a B.A. degree from Talladega College in Talladega, Alabama, where she majored in chemistry and minored in biology and mathematics with emphasis on secondary education. She completed additional graduate studies at Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Rochester Medical School. She received a Master of Science Education in Counseling from SUNY Brockport and a Master of Divinity from the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (CRCDS). She furthered her studies in the Doctor of Ministry program of Transformative Leadership at CRCDS and received her doctorate on May 14, 2005.

Vera gave her life to Christ at the age of 10, and attended the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Roswell, Georgia, where she was also baptized and married. She was an active participant in the civil rights movement in the South in the 60’s. In the early 70’s, Vera became an active Rochester community participant. She was a member of the Kodak Jaycees, the Board of Bilingual Health Education of Action for A Better Community, and the Board of the United Cancer Council (now Cancer Action). She gave many cancer awareness workshops in area churches and smoking cessation workshops and was a Hospice volunteer for the council. She also worked on member recruitment for the Urban League of Rochester. She is a retired science teacher from the Rochester City School District, where she taught for 25 years, and a member of the Rochester Police Department Clergy Response Team. She is also a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. This year marks Rev. Miller’s 20th year as pastor of Genesee Baptist Church. The church has experienced a tripled increase in attendance since she became pastor. Her accomplishments include initiating a Summer Arts Program for youth in the surrounding neighborhood, and instituting various projects to raise money for building and grounds improvements. She has served on the Ordination Review Committee of the American Baptist Churches of the Rochester/Genesee Region for more than 10 years and received a recognition award for outstanding service. She was also presented with the Sojourner Truth Award, the highest award given by The Rochester Genesee Valley Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. Pastor Vera has mentored 19 student ministers through their Master of Divinity Degree programs at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. She continues to dedicate babies, and baptize, marry, and win souls for Christ through the preaching of the Gospel. She loves to work for the Lord and her favorite Bible verse, as well as her ministerial motto, is John 3:17: “God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.”

Vera loves to sing and has an extensive musical background. As a student at Talladega, she was one of only six chosen freshmen to travel with the Talladega College Tour Concert Choir. She has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Eastman Theater in Rochester, New York with the former Charles Walker Chorale and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in the “Requiem for Brother Martin.” She sang with the Rochester Community Choir under the direction of Alvin Parris, the Martin Luther King Choir under the direction of Julius Dicks, the William Watson Singers, and the Gateways Festival Choir. She toured western New York cities as a soloist with Chuck Mangione. She has been a faithful singer in various church and community choirs, and continues to sing in her church choir.

Vera appears in the documentary film “Banished” and is recognized in the credits as a contributor.

Vera has three adult children: Rogena L. Miller, M.D., Rodney M. Miller and Veronica E. Miller. The joys of her life are her three grandchildren: Donovan Lee, Michelle Leola, and Sidney Marie.

CHARLES T. LUNSFORD, MD, 1892-1985 Born: Macon, Ga., 1892; the oldest of nine children; Moved to Rochester NY, July 10, 1921; Died at Strong Memorial Hospital of complications from pneumonia, Feb 22, 1985.

Parents: Son of a cotton sampler; His grandfather was white and a direct descendant of the Earl of Lunsford in England.

Family: Survived by wife Nan Lunsford and a brother, Marion Lunsford.

Education:

Graduate with Honors, College of Arts and Sciences, Howard University, 1913; graduated at the top of his class, Howard University Medical School, 1920.

Fraternity: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Career: Internship at Freedmen's Hospital, Washington, DC, 1921; Opened a private practice at 574 Clarissa St., Rochester, New York, became the first Black Doctor in the city in 1921 and later moved the practice to 718 South Plymouth Ave; Appointed to the staff of Rochester General Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital.

Professional/Community Involvement: Active in the NAACP for decades; became president of the civil rights organization in 1941; witnessed and participated in a series of land mark struggles for racial equality between 1920 and 1940; He confronted Dr. George Hoyt Whipple who was Dean of the University of Rochester Medical School for the integration of schools which ended 20 years of non-admission of Black students; challenged Harper Sibley of the YMCA over the refusal to accommodate a well-known Black singer at the downtown YMCA; He charged the University of Rochester, Eastman Kodak Company and Bausch & Lomb with discriminatory hiring and admissions in 1938; He embarrassed the Red Cross over the practice of turning away Black donors, 1944.

Awards/Recognition: Cited by then-Governor: W. Averell Harriman recognized his work "against discrimination in public accommodation, jobs & housing," 1958; Cited for more than 35 years of service to the NAACP at a dinner in New York City, 1959; Awarded the Rochester Museum and Science Center's Civic Medal for Community Service, 1974; The Rochester Board of Education named the new school #19 on Seward Street the “Charles T. Lunsford School� in 1973; A five hour testimonial dinner was held at the Mapledale Party House on Dr. Charles T. Lunsford Day in 1978.

Men of Alpha Phi Alpha Frederick Douglass Born a slave, Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, in Talbot County, Maryland, Frederick Douglass has been called the father of the civil rights movement. He rose through determination, brilliance, and eloquence to shape the American nation. He was an abolitionist, human rights and women's rights activist, orator, author, journalist, publisher, and social reformer. Committed to freedom, Douglass dedicated his life to achieving justice for all Americans, in particular African-Americans, women, and minority groups. He envisioned America as an inclusive nation strengthened by diversity and free of discrimination. Frederick Douglass died on February 20, 1895 at Cedar Hill after attending a women's rights meeting. He became an honorary member of Omega Chapter in 1921, enjoying the distinction of being the only member initiated posthumously. It is also noted that Douglas died before the founding of the Fraternity.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is undoubtedly one of the most renowned Alphas of all time. Dr. King became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in 1952. He crossed through the Sigma Chapter (Boston Metro chapter) of Alpha Phi Alpha, as a young graduate student at Boston University where he was working on his Doctorate of Philosophy. This photo shows him the year he became an Alpha. One of the world's best known advocates of nonviolent social change strategies Martin Luther King, Jr., drew his ideas from many different cultural traditions. Born in Atlanta on January 15, 1929, King's roots were in the African-American Baptist church. On December 5, 1955, five days after Montgomery civil rights activist Rosa Parks (Alpha Kappa Alpha) refused to obey the city's rules mandating segregation on buses, black residents launched a bus boycott and elected King as president of the newly-formed Montgomery Improvement Association. King gained national prominence as a result of his exceptional oratorical skills and personal courage. King's fame grew as he became Time Magazine's Man of the Year and, in December 1964, the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinate d on April 4, 1968, while seeking to assist a garbage workers' strike in Memphis. To date, King is the only American (excluding U.S. Presidents) to be honored with a Federal holiday.

Please join the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Eta Rho Lambda Charter in supporting a Benefit Concert for our Dear Brother Bro. Rev. Dr. Weldon G. Thomas, Senior Pastor Saturday November 3, 2018 The New Bethel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church 270 Scio Street, Rochester, NY 14605 The purpose of this concert is to raise funds for Pastor Thomas who has a rare form of cancer. Rev. Thomas travels every other week to Houston, Texas for cancer treatment. On Saturday November 3rd, the Rochester Community will be having a benefit concert which will take place at New Bethel CME Church, 270 Scio St. Rochester, NY. A city wide choir will sing for this very worthy event.
