Customers are glad we’re open - Bob Jantzi

’’

Due to restrictions on businesses that are allowed to remain open the COVID-19 Pandemic has made Tavistock look like a ghost town on most days. However, essential services have been functioning with as many safeguards as possible implemented to keep staff and customers protected. Some of the businesses that are allowed to operate are food stores and pharmacies with restaurants allowed to provide take-outs, but not able to accept diners. At Krug’s Meat Market, “the pandemic has affected us positively in that we are busier in the store,” said owner Bob Jantzi, who is now solely operating the store with his wife, Sherri. “But it also puts more pressure on us to ensure our store is safe for people to be in,” he added. Krug’s is asking for only three customers at a time to be in the store and that if customers have recently travelled that they don’t come in at all. They continue to offer free delivery for the Tavistock area and all of Wilmot township. They can also make arrangements for customers to pick up their order without having to come into the store. “Our working hours have increased both because of the extra business and the extra work in ensuring safety,” Bob said. Their current store hours are Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. until noon. They accept payment by debit, cash and/or cheques from known customers. When asked about their in-store selection, Bob said, most products are still readily available from their suppliers, with the exception of some beef products from Norwich Packers. “We have been able to keep our shelves, coolers and freezers fully stocked. big sellers,” he added. Many positive comments have been made with several customers saying that as a local supplier, “they are glad we’re open,” Bob continued. “Some have commented that they appreciate the positivity and hope that we try to convey and share in the midst of this crisis.”

KRUG’S HISTORY From the Tavistock Gazette, November 2, 2005 In 1984, Peter Baechler and Alan Blum had just taken over Krug’s Meat Market in Tavistock. Twenty-one years later, with a wealth of experience behind him, Bob Jantzi and his wife, Sherri (Zehr) stepped in to purchase the business and continue the tradition of preparing quality, fresh meat products. "As far back as 1936, the likes of Albert S. Miller, George Schindler (1937), Stefan Schoeck (1940), Gordon Krug (1948), and Elmer Neeb and Don Mutch (1964), have operated the business with the same dedication to old-fashioned principles. As one of the few privately-owned butcher shops in southwestern Ontario, the business draws patrons from as far away as London and Toronto. Bob Jantzi grew up on a farm on the outskirts of New Hamburg. He first learned the butcher trade by helping at market for Roth Meats of Haysville. He worked there for three years while completing high school, then spent a year at Cressman Meats in New Hamburg before graduating and joining them full-time for another five years. Bob and Sherri (daughter of Lorne and Delphine Zehr) were married in July of 1987. Bob tried his hand at the cabinetry business and in a lumber yard before their family moved to Virginia in 1994 to work as Mennonite Church volunteers. Moving back to Canada, Bob joined the staff at Lori-Jo’s in Stratford where he worked for a year and a half with the late Clair Yantzi, a respected, local butcher. For the past eight years, Bob has been working in Wellesley, first at Leis Feed & Supply for a year, then the balance at Feirling Home Centre with brother-in-law Bob Zehr. Sherri worked at Cressman’s Market with Bob, in the hairstyling business for 15 years, and for the past three years at Tim Hortons in Tavistock.
