Just what will 2015 bring?
Last year’s Three Kings arrival in Adeje
Many questions for the New Year ahead A S 2015 arrives and Tenerife prepares to welcome the Three Kings to complete the Christmas celebrations, thoughts have turned to what the New Year will bring. Will oil be found off the coast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura and, if so, what would this mean for the Canaries? Will the north and south hospitals finally open? Will the insular ring road be completed? And what about tourism numbers and air connectivity? Will both continue to grow? These old chestnuts remain but there are new issues on the horizon as well. What will happen to the Russian market? Will it bounce back or continue to decline? What will happen when the Spanish Government sells off 49 per cent of its shares in the airports? How will this effect the archipelago
and will some jobs and routes suffer as a result? Will there be any action on all-inclusive hotels which many people still believe is affecting the fortunes of many of the restaurants and bars in Tenerife? Will there be new rules for owners who want to rent out their apartments and villas to holiday-makers? Will the freeze on no new hotels other than five-star accommodation continue? And what about the big plans for Santa Cruz and the revitalisation of Puerto? Will these materialise as promised? All eyes will also be on jobs and the employment market.
Will 2015 be the year when unemployment starts to fall and the construction industry kick-starts again? The hotel employers’ assocation, Ashotel believes this new year will finally see the revitalisation of the depressed Spanish tourism market which, they say, is vital to encourage more air routes and lower prices. If that is true, it will bring even more people to Tenerife which has fared well in the main markets, particularly with the loyal Brits. For Tenerife Cabildo, all the issues above are of the greatest importance, of course, but president Carlos Alonso is once again calling for more autonomy for the islands. He says many projects are being stalled because they have no powers to go it alone
and their hands are tied. He also wants more inter-island co-operation. Transparency continues to be in the news with Canary president, Paulino Rivero saying they are committed to trust and citizen participation. These were sentiments expressed by the new King of Spain, Felipe VI in his first Christmas message who
pledged that corruption would be stamped out. Spain’s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy believes 2015 will be the year the economy finally “takes off” and believes it will be much improved on 2014. These thoughts are with ever yone, of course, but meantime, celebrations take centre-stage with the
traditional Three Kings parades on January 5th in various locations in Tenerife, including Adeje, Santa Cruz and Los Cristianos. The Tenerife News also takes this chance to wish all our readers and advertisers a happy and hopefully more prosperous New Year. .
