August, 2009 Faith is a Lifestyle

There was nothing we could do in the natural. It was out of our hands. Our car was out of control as we hydroplaned at 70 mph across an I-10 overpass east of El Paso. It is true about time slowing down on the inside of you while all around you things are zooming by. I knew if we regained traction on the bridge, we would go over the guardrail because we were sliding sideways. Instead, we slid the length of the bridge and regained traction on the asphalt highway. I had to put my physical senses on hold—they gave me few options, none of which were favorable. I rested my head back against the seat as I spoke the Name of Jesus. The car shot into the mud-filled median, spinning round and round. A wave of mud closed us off from the world for a few moments until the rain and wipers swished it off. It was like sitting in a darkened theater when the movie starts—only we didn’t like the show. The car had come out of its spin and was headed backwards into oncoming traffic. I saw the other vehicles coming towards us; my natural mind knew we would not be able to avoid a collision. I just trusted Him. At that point, that was all there was to do. My life already belonged to God, but I committed that moment to Him knowing He could supernaturally do what wasn’t possible in the natural. BAM! Just as we were about to enter the rush of oncoming traffic, we hit something that sent us back through the ditch and up onto the correct side of the highway where there was no traffic. I immediately turned to look at what we had hit, but there was nothing there that my physical eyes could see. We were SAFE! We stopped a short distance down the road to check the car—no scratches, no dents! We only found a plug of grass stuck in the car’s undercarriage. Was there an angel standing on the edge of that interstate that pushed us away from the rush of oncoming traffic and back into our own lane again? Something was there: we felt the impact, and it knocked our car away from danger. God’s Word says that He gives His angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways (Psalm 91:11). In our early years of marriage I decided to “help” my husband while he was at work by clearing some prickly pear off our city lots. A backhoe operator was doing some road work in front of our place and loaded our truck for free, and a friend helped me shovel it out by hand at the dump. She had to leave before we finished the last load, but I decided I could do it myself. (I don’t know why we women think our physical bodies can do all the things our minds determine to do.) I drove around the dump thinking someone else might be dumping and perhaps help me unload, but the place was completely deserted. I was already exhausted from shoveling the other loads, but I began working to get that hill of cactus, dirt and rock out of our truck. It didn’t take long before I realized that I couldn’t do it. I stopped shoveling and stood on top of that heap, turning to get a panoramic view of that desolate place. There was still no one in sight, no one to help me at all. Tears rolled down my face mingling with the dust and sweat. I half-heartedly asked the LORD to send someone to help me, knowing that no one was coming, knowing that I had done this to myself…. I had just looked behind me, but as I turned again,

there were three men standing at the back of the truck. How they had gotten there without me seeing them walk up was beyond my understanding. They didn’t speak English, but I understood that they wanted to shovel out my problem for me. Within a few minutes they had finished the job, and I turned to get in the truck. When I looked back, they were gone. They had left just like they had come. While we’re not to seek after or worship angels, Hebrews 13:2 says, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” I think they entertained me. Thank You, Lord.
