When it comes to managing cattle, often the first critical thing to look at is fencing. Technology is stepping in to make the options greater for ways to manage grazing and control where your cattle have access and when. This month we look at some of the more traditional options as well as where technology has stepped in to, in some instances, make new realities for your pasture management.
Through Facebook, I came across a Longhorn owner making use of virtual fence for her Longhorns in a situation where traditional fence just wasn’t a viable option. While some may be skeptical regarding the upfront cost and reliability of virtual fence, it certainly has some strong positives and, in some instances, is more economical and time saving. Learn more about virtual fence and situations where people have found it a good solution in this issue.
Traditional fencing options are by no means going away, however, and we look at those as well. It’s important to know what all your options are and determine the best solution for your needs and property.
New technology doesn’t mean the old solutions are obsolete, especially when it comes to livestock management. Most people find marrying established solutions with new technologies achieve the timesaving and cost-effectiveness they desire.
Possibilities abound in all aspects of the Longhorn industry in general. There are shows, sales and futurities in all parts of the country, all offering different opportunities for those who participate. Options for what to do with your cattle are wide open as well, including trophy animals, show cattle, futurity competitors, horn measuring competition, beef production, riding animals…the really are diverse options and many owners/breeders participate in several areas.
The one thing that seems to ring true throughout the breed that everyone who owns Texas Longhorn cattle enjoy watching them in their pastures and interacting with them on a regular basis, whether it be a simple head scratch, hand feeding cubes or working them.

reat things are happening! The Longhorn Industry has maintained its strong push thus far into the year! Prices are up at the sales. The NLFR is pushing record numbers at most every futurity. Business is good. Here in Northeast Texas, sale barn prices are great as well. It’s a wonderful time to cull as hard as you ever have inside your own herd. Got an animal that just doesn’t make the cut for moving your program forward? $1.80 a lb at the sale barn is better money than you’ll ever get for it elsewhere. A wise man once told “me if you aren’t culling the bottom of your herd, you’re only hurting the industry.” I’ll admit it sounded harsh when he said it, but rings truer and truer as the years go by. Why keep a below average animal in hopes that a registered sale will take it when you could make more across the scales than you could possibly make elsewhere? Plus, there’s no consignment fees, no health papers, no making your ranch look bad by offering your lowest. Now’s the time to cull! Even the best, most experienced breeders cull in some way. You should too!

The idea of using virtual fence for cattle was tested as early as the 1980’s. While research is still ongoing, there are now practical applications available commercially for cattle producers thanks to continuined improvements in GPS technology, better technology and battery life in collars, and constantly expanding 5G bandwith in rural areas.
Many commercial systems involve installing towers on your property to broadcast signals Those towers can greatly increase your startup costs, as can a high minimum numbers of collars you can order. (We will look at some of these options in future issues of Trails).
Smaller properties with fewer head of cattle now have a great option via a company called Nofence and Longhorn owner Christine McAllister in the Wet Moutains in Southern Colorado, near Westcliffe recently turned to Nofence to allow her to graze more of their property that cannot be fenced under current circumstances.
“We have a somewhat unique situation,” explains McAllister. “We live on a ranch that is over 3,000 acres. There are several different areas and each is subdivided into ~35 acre parcels of which we own two adjacent properties. All of the owners in the ranch are part of a grazing lease where a local cattle rancher rotationally
To stay in the grazing lease, owners can’t fence off more than a few acres. Colorado is a fence-out state so most owners only fence around their house to keep the cattle out of their gardens and such and let them graze the rest of their land. We needed to put up fencing to keep our animals in which then limits the pasture available to the rancher’s cattle. And, owners are asked not to mow any grasses until after the cattle depart in the Fall.
“We bought our cows in 2024 and fenced in a few acres for them. Each had a calf, both of which just turned a year old. We would like our small herd to be able to graze over our entire 70 acres when the

help with fire mitigation. This will help knock down some of the tall native grasses. These grasses are brown by the time the rancher’s cattle arrive in our part of the ranch during the late Summer and his cattle never even touch them. The virtual fencing will also allow us to rotate our herd so they are grazing different areas of our property and not in the same pasture all of the time. This will preserve our pastures and keep them in good condition. Down the road, we may ask neighbors about allowing them to graze on their vacant land as well.”
Another factor in her decision was cost, stating that
that long. Betteries must be charged and firware updated. McAllister tested things out to be sure all was working before apply collars to the cattle.
McAllister made use of a longhorn chute and said application was fairly easy. A little adjusting to get the chain strap equal on both sides at a length neither too loose or tight and then they snap into the neck strap pretty easily. They choose to check their herd daily to ensure the fit is still correct, especially on yearlings that are growing quickly.
To start training the cattle, they started as the manufacturer suggested, setting up a virtual fencline inside their physical fence to get the cattle accustomed to the audio cues and pulses.
the cost to purchase via Nofence was less than it would have cost to fence in one additional acre with round posts and five-strand barbless wire. While Nofence requires a subscription to their app for each collar, McAllister reminds readers thatphysical fence requires constant checking and often repairs and maintenance., all costing you time and money.
Other pluses for McAllister when she researched companies was the need to be able to order a smaller number of collars, the ability to find cows that manage to wander off via GPS, an informative and helpful support system.
The time investment to get the fence in use wasn’t
“Setting up the training pasture on the app was very easy to do. With just a few clicks, you are done. The app shows your GPS location so you can also walk your pasture to ensure you put the virtual fence where you want it to be,” said McAllister. “This is what we did. When an animal approaches the virtual boundary, the collar provides them with an audio signal, followed by a pulse, but only if the animal continues towards and/ or outside of the virtual boundary. Our one cow learned very quickly to turn around when she heard the audio. She was doing this consistently after only getting 2 or 3 pulses. Her steer also learned very quickly. However, our lead cow resisted a little more, but she closely observed the others getting the audio signals and began to simply avoid the virtual fence line entirely. When she did get audio signals, she also backed up.”
At the time of this article, McAllister was just starting to move the cows out of the fenced pasture to open spaces. “The good news is that we didn’t have any official escapes,” she reported. “However, my lead cow gets spun up and gets the herd running around like crazy cows...lol. We call them back inside the fenced pasture when we see this (we get nervous they are going to bolt). The second try went better than the first. We’ll be trying it again over the long weekend.
My lead cow avoided the test virtual fence line after getting a few pulses. She possibly pushes the boundaries more than the others. I feel she needs more experience with it which is why we are doing tests outside of the 9. 10.
fenced pasture, just to be sure. The herd will follow
when you setup your virtual fencing. Just place your virtual fence line back a few feet from where you don’t want the cattle to go.
• It is very easy to setup exclusion zones, if you want to keep the cattle away from certain areas of your virtual pasture.
• Our cattle need the ability to come into their
physically fenced pasture for food and water and the barn they sleep in at night. We were able to Integrate the virtual and physical fencing with a few tips from other users.
You also have to be mindful of how you design a virtual pasture to not create skinny areas that could confuse the cattle if they hear the audio no matter what way they turn.
They offer what’s called a shelter beacon that turns off the GPS if the animals go inside of a barn at night.
The batteries each took ~12 hours to charge so that needs to be planned for, or the person needs to buy more chargers.
We ordered an extra battery and a few straps (the straps are meant to break if a cow gets stuck on something).
My steer likes to chase delivery drivers up and down the driveway from within the virtual fence.
I’m likely going to keep their virtual pasture away from the ranch roads, though we are very remote and there isn’t a lot of traffic. I’m also concerned if the cattle will take off chasing the deer or ravens, another fun thing they like to do.
While McAllister’s situation may be a little different than most, it does illustrate the convenience of easily moving cattle from one area of your property to another for rotational grazing or simply to keep them out of areas you do not want them in.
Farms and ranches always need fences. Building and maintaining permanent fences can be a huge job. Permanent fences are often barbed-wire (especially in large pastures) or net wire, and sometimes posts and poles or jack-fences.
Fencing can be a challenge when it’s too rocky to dig post holes, or set posts with a post pounder. Michael Thomas, a rancher and custom fence-builder (Baker, Idaho), uses a hydraulic jack-hammer type post pounder mounted on a skid steer, and it can drive posts through most rocky conditions. In some situations, however, the best option when you need to set a deep brace post is to dig a hole with a backhoe.
In country too steep for a backhoe he sometimes uses a roto-hammer electric drill and a portable generator. “This works for drilling small-diameter holes into solid rock, to insert a steel post, or even create a larger hole for a brace post,” says Thomas.
In some areas where it’s not too steep and there are surface rocks, you can use an above-ground basket/ cage full of rocks as a brace point when it’s impossible to set posts. You can gather and stack rocks, then secure them with wire, or make a cage first and put rocks into it. “Net wire works to create the cage around a pile of rocks, to hold them in place. Rocks are heavy enough that you only need a cage about 3 feet in diameter or width, to provide a solid anchor to secure fence wire and stretch it from there,” he says. If terrain is too rocky for setting wood posts, you can often put steel posts into the ground deep enough to hold, using rock baskets every so often for braces.
Other alternatives are a completely above-ground fence like a jack-fence (buck fence) or worm fence. A worm fence is created by stacking logs or large-diameter poles upon one another, interlocking in two directions. The fence is a continual series of corners/angles.
A jack-fence of poles works if ground is too rocky or swampy to set posts, but in windy country it must be anchored so it won’t blow over. “To keep it from tipping over, hang a large rock under one of the jacks every so often, or make small rock baskets under some of the jacks, with the jack secured to them,” Thomas says.
Sometimes high tensile electric fencing is utilized as permanent fence, but the most common use today for electric fencing is portable fencing for rotational grazing.
PORTABLE ELECTRIC
- Many grazing systems today utilize frequent moves for cattle, from paddock to paddock or strip grazing fields and pastures with portable electric fencing. Portable fence is handy for creating inexpensive temporary fences, and is usually the fence of choice on leased ground; if you
have to give up a lease and move, you haven’t invested a lot of money in fencing, and can take the portable fence material with you.
Jim Gerrish, American Grazinglands Services (May, Idaho) has been involved with innovative grazing systems for many years, first as a grazing specialist at the University at Missouri and now as a stockman and consultant in eastern central Idaho. His ranch has very little permanent fence. He runs 500 pairs and moves them once a day, sometimes twice daily. “To walk out of the house, go to the pasture, move fence, and get back to the house takes about 45 minutes. If I ride the ATV it takes about 25 minutes,” he says.
It’s not time-consuming if you plan it right. “Each time I move cattle, I’m moving about 1000 feet of poly wire.” He uses 2 fences, putting the next one up before he takes the one in front of the cows down.
“We graze in strips. On a center pivot, these are round strips. On square fields we do parallel strips,” says Gerrish. He likes working with strips 600 to 800 feet wide, up to a mile long. A strip 660 feet wide and a mile long is 80 acres.
If the cattle need 20 acres per day, it would take 4 days to get across one of those strips. “You might graze it in 4 or 5-acre pieces by making several moves per day.” This gives flexibility to increase or decrease the number of moves per day.
“If you had a square section laid out in eight 80-acre strips, you’d be moving the same length of fence every day. It would take about 12 minutes to make the 660 foot shift,” he says. This makes the system very efficient. Avoid designs where you’d have to move more than a quarter mile of poly wire; a standard fence reel holds a quarter mile. The number of step-in posts for that length of fence is easy to carry. “If you go longer distances you
need a bigger reel, more posts, and it’s harder to get the job done quickly,” explains Gerrish.
If you have electric fence dividing a paddock and want to move cattle and leave the wire in place—and don’t have an electric gate handle—he suggests using a piece of PVC pipe (8 or 10 feet long) to lift up the wire and let the cattle walk under it. Once they learn they can go under the wire when you lift and prop it up, it’s easy to move the herd.
“The main thing when setting up fences on your place is to think of it as a network. Everything ties together and the different sections should come together at single points and not be looped back to any other segment of the fence. Then if you do need to turn off a certain section of fence to fix something, maybe it’s only 20% of the fence on the ranch and can be done with the flip of a switch. You can turn that off and work on just that part. When it’s segmented in a network, it’s easy to trace down the actual point of a problem.”
The nice thing about electric fencing is that these systems are easily modified if you need to change something. If you want to create another split in a pasture, it’s fairly easy to do. There may be challenges in certain pastures and different kinds of terrain but you can be very creative with electric fencing.
“We are now more able to tackle difficult terrain with temporary fence than we used to be able to do. Once you have the basic techniques figured out, and the right tools in your toolbox, putting temporary fence up the foot of a mountain isn’t a big deal—as long as you are not doing miles and miles of it,” says Gerrish. It is better than trying to put permanent fences in some places where you may not want a fence there forever.
SUSPENSION FENCE - Advantages to suspension fencing include fewer posts (an advantage in rocky terrain, and less cost and labor for installation and maintenance), more resilience when struck by animals or vehicles--and therefore less damage to the fence from wildlife or highway accidents. Posts can be set wider apart, with lightweight stays between them.
Southwest Fence Systems and Southwest Fence and Supply Company, Inc. have been working for several decades to improve suspension fencing. According to Chris Hanneken, president, their unique braces and lightweight stays make their fencing highly durable, minimizing maintenance. The Hanneken family developed their first products in the 1970’s, originally to create better fencing on their own ranches. Today their system is used on many farms and ranches and by county and state municipalities, U.S. Department of Transportation, park districts, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and other entities that utilize fencing.
Early suspension fences used wooden stays, which provided good visibility to livestock and wildlife but were labor intensive to install. Metal twist stays provide poor visibility and are not always easy to install. They are easily
bent by wildlife hitting the fence or going under or over it, leaving the stays permanently bent, compromising height or position of wires and are almost impossible to remove without bolt cutters.
Hanneken says their stays are more durable and resilient and last longer. The first ones were made in an extruded high density polyethylene form, with a lifetime guarantee. A later design is similar, but created with an injection mold process, providing more strength. Other improvements include added reinforcement near the attachment lock-pin notches (lock pins for easy installation which is also effective for electric fence) and more visibility. The stays are widely used for rejuvenating old fences and quick repairs.
“These stays only come down to the bottom wire, so the fence is floating free between posts,” says Hanneken. This makes a better suspension system because it has more give if an animal or car hits it. If stays come down to the ground it is not truly a suspension fence.
“We’ve had poly stays in 40-foot wire gates that have been run over by trucks thousands of times when the gates were laid down, and they are still functional. You can’t do that with metal stays,” he explains.
Posts for a suspension fence can be metal or wood, set anywhere from 16 feet to 50 feet apart (30 feet average distance). “This allows the fence to give and flex without compromise,” says Hanneken. Traditional fences along a road usually won’t stay standing after a vehicle crashes through them—taking out posts.
“When cars hit our suspension fence, the fence usually stays up enough to contain livestock until repairs can be made. Even if a post is knocked out and there’s an 80foot section of unsupported fence, the wires generally won’t break, and the fence is still in place, and will hold cattle,” says Hanneken.
Heavy snow can weight down traditional or electric fencing and break wires or push a fence over. Freezing and thawing can disrupt stability of traditional posts and braces; frost heaves posts upward. After a few years, posts and braces may not stay in line or may come out of the ground.
“The bracing system is the key to our suspension fence, designed to withstand freezing and thawing. Our braces utilize a diagonal rod similar to the anchor system on modular homes. This is where we got the idea. No suspension system can be successful without a good brace,” says Hanneken.
His family developed a permanent driven brace, which is quick and foolproof to install, without having to dig post holes. “The two brace posts are driven into the ground, and there’s a guide tube on each post that’s cut and welded into that post at a 45-degree angle,” says Henneken. “After you’ve driven the post to the depth of the guide tube, you put the anchor rod through the post (via the guide tube), drive the rod into the ground and bolt it in place,” he says. The fence is engineered for a brace every quarter mile.
Young people who dream of being Hoss Cartwright or John Wayne may want to own a ranch extending as far as the eye can see, but they don’t live in an 1880 opportunity. Today, unless one inherits wealth or ranch land, the only way to start a profitable cattle business is with leased land. However, good news, that isn’t hard. Many have done it. It still works with a good business plan. It is a way to grow a ranch with little or no borrowed money, and that is very important.
Leasing of grazing land is a way to develop profitable herd numbers with no land purchase, thereby maximizing livestock income and minimizing land purchase risks and cost at the same time. Over a period of years, the profit from registered Texas Longhorn cattle will buy your own ranch.
An ideal plan is to have a permanent owned headquarters for branding, corrals, barns, tool shed, working and feeding pens. Then, have lease pastures to inventory larger herd numbers. Leasing several different pastures minimizes the risk of losing a main pasture. A landowner may pass away or sell property. At that time it is a safety net to lease a half dozen different properties so the whole business is not in jeopardy. Leases located in different areas may provide security against drought by having grass in different parts of the county.
Many good grasslands for ranching are priced too high for cattle. Land priced at $5000 per acre may be available at $3.00 to $35 per acre for an annual grazing lease. The price of a grazing lease will vary in different areas. In Arizona it might cost $0.50 per acre and require 300 acres, a cost of $150 per cow per year. In Iowa it may cost $35 per acre and require 3 acres per cow per year, at a cost of $105. A lease per year, per cow, should always be under $200.
The combination of deeded or owned land and leased land is a secure investment blend.

Many parcels that have been used for livestock grazing become available for new lease owners. A poor cattle manager will grub the good grasses to the ground trying to harvest the last dollar from their lease. When new land is leased, sometimes it has been previously trashed. Under this scenario, a contract of lease can be negotiated to begin in the distant future, allowing a season of grass growth recovery. Damage by the previous lessee is not carried over as an expense to the new lessee.
As cattle and land become more valuable there will be a division. There will be land owners and there will be livestock producers. Most likely these will not be the same people. The person who owns valuable land may not want to break ice, brand cattle or castrate calves. The cowboy who can manage cattle for profit may not be able to own enough land to run a profitable sized herd. At this point the leasing of ranch land is a winwin partnership for both. As the USA continues the 20-year decline in beef production, it will become patriotic to produce quality lean beef for human consumption. It strengthens the nation not to depend on imports for family food.
Projections reveal that livestock grain feed availability will decline due to the increased price paid for human grain consumption in the US and abroad. As all cattle switch to dependency on grass, browse, cactus and low quality fiber, the Texas Longhorn breed will become far more profitable than other breeds.
The profit-miracle of the future will be to grow human consumable food without feeding human consumable food to meat animals. That fact, in the next few years, will make the Texas Longhorn the true hero over all meat animals. Build a Ponderosa.....pronto! Get your plan ready! Buy or lease. Either one will be profitable. It is harder than Hoss Cartwright’s times, but it can be done.

The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation.
• There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top third of the class.
• Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest.
• Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB.
• With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie.
• A Horn Showcase female entry must have had at least one recorded TLBAA calf, be nursing a calf at side or be confirmed bred by 36 months of age by palpation, ultrasound or BioPRYN blood test conducted 60-days past breeding and be so noted on a health certificate signed by a veterinarian and furnished to the show office.
An award will be given to the host of the satellite who has the most animals measured at their location that are NOT owned by the satellite host. Animals that are owned in partnership by the host do not count. It will be decided by number of measurement entries, not by number of animals.
As an example, an animal entered and measured for composite will count three times.
• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division.
• Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older.
• Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.
• Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.
• Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring.
• Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner.
• Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in .
• Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring.
• Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.
• Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.
• One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote.
• Animals must be present in Oklahoma City to be eligible.
• Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.
This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity.
To be win the Superior Award, an animal must place first in both a measurement class and their Futurity class.
Winners will have a trophy mailed to them after the event.
• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold.
• Bulls that are living must be present in Oklahoma City; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them)
• Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. Must have 50 straws minimum available. If less than 50 straws available, seller must pay shipping to buyer.
• No minimum straw purchases allowed.
• Bulls must be entered in a measurement class.

Spring time means greener pastures, new calves and time for the Annual Butler Breeders Meeting. Each year for the past 27 years Butler Breeders and guests have come together from all across the country for this annual meeting. This year was no exception as the group came together on April 11th and 12th in Kemah, TX. They kicked off the weekend by gathering Friday evening at T-Bone Tom’s for dinner, music and fellowship.
The Butler bloodline of cattle are truly makers of history including being the only foundation bloodline to have a museum dedicated to the preservation of that history. Butler cattle have probably made more history and have had more of an impact on the Longhorn breed than any of the other foundation bloodlines. That history is showcased in the Butler Longhorn Museum located in Kemah, TX, which was the location of this year’s meeting. The museum houses over 250 Butler Longhorn skulls and shoulder mounts of some of the legendary cattle from the bloodline. This is one of the largest Longhorn horn collections of its kind. A lot of the animals that are represented in the shoulder mounts can be found in the pedigrees of today’s Butler cattle as well as those that are not straight Butler. The museum also displays lots of additional artifacts related to the Butler family, Longhorn cattle history and the pioneer breeders that came before us. One such display is Col. Eddie Wood’s cowboy hat and a list of his
wonderful and humorous sayings that he used while auctioneering hundreds of Longhorn sales including the Butler Breeders Invitational Sale.
The group gathered at the museum on Saturday morning with breeders in attendance from Texas, Iowa and Louisiana. The breeders enjoyed a wonderful BBQ meal from Red River BBQ donated by Allen Rassumsen of Hometown Bank. The community of Kemah is very supportive of the Butler Longhorn Museum and the Butler Breeders. Their support was shared with the group by Mayor Pro Tem, Isaac Saldana as he addressed the group. The breeders toured the museum with some of the longtime breeders sharing stories and history of the cattle and pioneer breeders with the newer breeders. It was a great time of fellowship, camaraderie and talk of Butler Texas Longhorn cattle with fellow breeders.
The group also talked over the plans for the upcoming Butler Breeders Invitational Sale. It is one of the longest consecutively running sales in the Longhorn breed today. They will be hosting their 28th annual sale on August 31, 2025. There was a great deal of enthusiasm about this year’s sale and offering of a quality set
of cattle. The quality of the cattle being offered has continually improved over the years, while continuing to hold true to the look and style of the cattle that Mr. Butler bred for decades.
There was also discussion about the upcoming Butler Breeders Online Futurity. This unique futurity gives Butler Breeders a way to showcase some of their best animals. This one of a kind futurity was started in 2018. Exhibitors submit the pedigree information for verification that their entry is straight Butler. They then submit photos and a short video of their entries. Once entries are closed a panel of judges are given access to the photos and videos for the judging process. After judging is complete all entries are made available for viewing by the public on the website www. butlerbreedersfuturity.com. The winners are announced and awards are presented at the Friday evening gathering before the sale on Saturday.
The impact of the Butler bloodline is far reaching in the Longhorn Breed. Over the years many of the top breeding programs have utilized straight Butler genetic to add horn growth, femininity and eye appeal to their herds. Butler cattle have a unique look and style about them that can’t be found in the other foundation bloodlines. One example is the “Butler Lacy Face” which is almost always found only in Butler or Butler influenced cattle. Straight Butler bulls like, VJ Tommie aka “Unlimited” have been utilized in several programs to not only add horn length but also to add the eye appeal of the pretty “Butler Lacy Face”. A number of legendary breeders once ran herds of straight Butler cattle so that they could then blend those Butler genetics into their main herd. In most cases this blending efforts resulted in more horn, more body and more color. Some of today’s best known animals, like Cowboy Tuff Chex have a pedigree that traces back to a high percentage of Butler genetics. This is just one of many examples of the impactful influence of Butler genetics.
We hope you will come join us at the 28th Annual Butler Breeders Sale on August 31st in Lockhart, TX. You too can benefit from the impact of straight Butler genetics on your herd or better yet start your own straight Butler herd.

February 16, 1939 - April 23, 2025
Billy Bert Meridith went home to see Jesus on April 23, 2025. He was born on Thursday, February 16, 1939 to Jasper Paul and Lois Elizabeth (Olmstead) Meridith in Hutchinson, KS. He always joked he was born in the salt mines and that’s why he was so salty. He attended school in Argonia, KS graduating with the class of ’57. He attended Emporia State for 6 weeks and thought it wasn’t for him. His friend always told people Bill was so smart he got through college in 6 weeks. He then went to work at Farrar Machine Shop in Norwich where he was fascinated how you could make working parts out of pieces of metal. He was married to Judy Ann Coffelt and to this union were born his children that he cherished: Deeta Kay Strader (Mike), Susan Meridith Hensey (Brett), Shelly Lynn Delice (Ron), and Billy Ross Meridith (Jess). He married Judith Ann Bliss on October 9, 1981, and acquired his bonus daughter Lisa Baird (Rob).
On May 9, 1966 at the age of 27, Bill and some other partners started Precision Machining, which was well respected in the aircraft industry. He machined parts for Boeing, Beech, Cessna and McDonnell Douglas. He had so much knowledge on machining titanium he had people calling for information on how to do it. He was equally respected by his employees who would do anything he wanted them to do. He learned to fly and was an excellent pilot, even though he was scared of heights. He was able to land 2 planes that could have ended in crashes. When he was learning to fly, he and Judy would take a sandwich during lunch and go flying. He was an avid water skier and loved skiing at Table Rock Lake with his siblings, children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He helped many first time skiers experience the thrill of gliding across the water, patiently coaching “Skis together, knees bent, arms out straight, let the boat pull you up!”
Bill never met a stranger and always had his hand out for a handshake. He was always a good witness for his best friend, Jesus. Jesus asked him to build a Christian school where the young children of Wellington could worship Jesus openly with a prayer circle every morning. For 20 years, Bill opened the door for the students, greeted them, and taught them how to make eye contact and shake hands. He would beam when they sang “Jesus Loves Me” in prayer circle, because he wanted everyone to know how much Jesus loves them! Bill has heard “well done, good and faithful servant” and has received his crown.
He is survived by his “Judith Ann”; all of his children; grandchildren Meridith (Trey) Lohse, Melissa (Matt) Ybarra, Grey and Cheyenne Hensey, Dr. Bliss Baird, Leela and Lucas Meridith, Zinedine and Aurelie Delice; great grandchildren Asher, Jude and Eden Lohse, Margot and Elowyn Ybarra; sisters Janet Marie Leddy and Judy Kay Casner; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob Meridith, sister Jayree Ricke, niece Ladonna Dawson, brothers-in-law Jack Casner, Leroy Ricke and Andy Leddy, and sister-in-law, Sandra Meredith.
Visitation with family was held at Wellington Christian Academy on April 28, 2025, directly followed by the celebration of life. People attending were encouraged to wear brightly colored clothing, and jeans were welcome.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in his memory to his beloved Wellington Christian Academy, 205 N. Hoover Rd., Wellington KS 67152.
Share a memory, leave condolences, or sign his digital tribute wall at www.cornejofuneralhome.com.

March 3, 1947 - April 27, 2025
Johnnie Robert “Bob” Kropp, age 78, a longtime resident of Stillwater, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at his home in Canal Winchester, Ohio, on Sunday, April 27, 2025.
A visitation with family greeting friends will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at Strode Funeral Home in Stillwater. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home and Cremation is in charge of the arrangements.
Bob was born on March 3, 1947, in Plainview, Texas, to Paul and Beth Kropp. He was raised on Green Acres Farms, a large and diverse farming and livestock operation located near Lockney, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle. The Kropp family became well known for their remarkable success in the show ring, winning multiple championships across several states and providing genetics for countless operations across the country. One of Bob’s most distinguished accomplishments came when he exhibited the grand champion lamb at Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and El Paso - all in the same year - a feat never before achieved at the time. Showing and judging livestock was his lifelong passion, one that carried him from being named the Texas 4-H State Judging High Individual in 1964 to judging and coaching at Oklahoma State University for many years.
After graduating from Lockney High School in 1965, Bob earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition from Oklahoma State University, studying under many industry legends on faculty. In 1972, he began a distinguished academic career at OSU, where he served for over four decades as a professor and as Head Livestock Judging Team Coach from 1972 to 1981, 1992. Under his leadership, the team competed in 52 intercollegiate contests, earning 16 Champion Team titles, 39 Top Five finishes, and securing a Reserve National Championship in 1973 and National Championships in 1979 and 1981 (the latter with coach Kim Brock). Dr. Kropp’s most enduring legacy was the profound impact he had on his students. Over the course of his teaching career, he taught more than 12,000 students and personally advised over 1,500 undergraduates, shaping the lives and careers of multiple generations of agricultural professionals, ranchers, and farmers.
A recognized authority in beef cattle production, Bob delivered more than 300 presentations across 25 states and internationally in Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, and the Bahamas. Also, he judged more than 700 livestock shows around the world. His talks addressed a wide range of topics including beef production, breeding program design, skeletal structure, marketing, and carcass merit. He also served as a consultant to numerous registered and commercial cow-calf operations across the United States and abroad. His leadership extended to prominent roles within the industry. He served a six-year term on the National Board of Directors of the International Brangus Breeders of America. For over 26 years, he was actively involved with the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America, where he chaired the Breed Advisory Committee for 25 years, served on the National Board of Directors for a decade, and held the position of National Secretary and Executive Committee member. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the TLBAA Hall of Fame in 2022.
Above all, Bob was a dedicated family man who led by example in every aspect of life. He was married to Susan Marie (Barr) for 53 years until her passing in 2021, and together they raised one son, Paul David Kropp, who followed in his father’s footsteps by graduating from Oklahoma State University and building a career in agriculture. Bob especially cherished attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, cheer competitions, and school activities-always present, always supportive, often providing advice and encouragement. He looked forward to each and every event.
Sports were a lifelong passion for Bob. He was an avid golfer, bowler, softball and basketball player, and a loyal fan of Oklahoma State University athletics. A season ticket holder for over 50 years, he proudly wore orange and loved cheering and critiquing his Cowboys. Known for his warm smile, engaging stories, and welcoming spirit, Bob valued and nurtured the many friendships he built throughout his life.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Susan, his parents Paul and Beth Kropp, his brother Jimmy Kropp, and his sister Paulette Savage.
He is survived by his son Paul Kropp and wife Missy of Oologah, Oklahoma; his grandchildren Carson and Kennedy Kropp; his brother-in-law David Shawn Barr of Oklahoma City; and his significant other Mariette Benage of Canal Winchester, Ohio.
Bob will be remembered for his dedication to education, his contributions to the livestock industry, his passion for students, and his enduring love for his family, friends, and the Oklahoma State University community.
“It’s Been a Ride!” - Dr. Bob Kropp
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests contributions may be made to the scholarship fund established in Bob’s honor by going to https://secure.osugiving.com/s/giving/annual?dsgt=20-68700
October 23, 1953 – April 29, 2025
George Wesley Dennis Jr. passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home in Leander, Texas. Family and friends are invited to gather in honor of a man who brought light into the lives of many with his humor, kindness, and steady presence.
Born on October 23, 1953, George lived a life defined by quiet strength, deep curiosity, and a generous heart. Raised in Odessa, Texas, he quickly became a standout athlete in basketball and track and field. He set a long jump record that stood for years at his high school and earned a full-ride track scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Statistics.
During college, George became a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church, where he met the love of his life, Cindy Ellen Reed. The two were married on July 11, 1981, embarking on a lifetime of adventure together. Their ranch in Coupland, Texas, became home to many fond memories—raising Texas Longhorns, wrangling rattlesnakes, and enjoying the serenity of the countryside. Their favorite escapes were spent fly fishing in the rivers of Colorado, soaking in the beauty of nature. George and his wife, Cindy have been TLBAA members since 1989. They had three daughters in TLBT - Katie, Kari and Keely.
A dedicated and analytical thinker, George built a successful career in computer programming, where his sharp mind and unwavering work ethic earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike. Outside of work, he embraced the simple joys of life. He spent years playing coed softball for Hyde Park Baptist Church at Quarry Park, tending his garden, and finding happiness in the art of cooking. Whether experimenting with new recipes, baking bread from scratch, or perfecting homemade salsa, he appreciated good food and the warmth it brought to gatherings.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George Wesley Dennis Sr. and Betty Harding Dennis, as well as his brotherin-law, Stan Fulton. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 43 years, Cindy Dennis; devoted daughters, Katie Daniel and husband Joe, Kari Butler and husband Rhett, and Keely Dennis; his cherished grandchildren, Eli and Emerson Daniel, Beau, Quinn, Briar, and Belle Butler; his loving sisters, Beverly Fulton and Teresa Wing and husband John; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda and Dan Jacobson; and his treasured nieces and nephews, Miranda Filley, Caitlin McGuire, and Paul Gilliam.
Though he once insisted he didn’t want pets, George’s heart softened over time, leading to cherished companionship with his beloved dogs, Macy and Stinky.
George lived his life with integrity, curiosity, and love. His presence will be deeply missed. Now peacefully resting in the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ, he is at home in heaven.

Heart of Texas Longhorn Association held their spring show in Snook, Texas at the Snook Rodeo Arena. Torrential rains fell on move in day, May 2; that brought stuck trucks, riverlets flowing into the arena, and other problems that were quickly solved. As is always the case, the weather was wonderful the next two days and the show went on. Show judges were Russell Hooks, Russell Fairchild, and Lauren Dean who were very generous with their time and advice. Jaylin Krimmel started the weekend off with a wonderful rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. She was awesome.
There was a special open showmanship competition for exhibitors showing less than one year. Russell Hooks had a hard time choosing the winner, but Katelynn Myers rose to the top. Others in the group were Alyssa Ogle, Lily Johnson, and Kassandra Merceri –all of them showed they were really

HOTLA could not have done this without their help and support.
Lastly we want to thank our members who worked tirelessly before the show, during the show, and after the show. Shows late in the year have to work extra fast to get their records in before the World Show.

The Board of Directors for the Southeast Texas Longhorn Association were looking for a creative way to promote SETLA, our membership and their cattle.
The Board came up with a new concept, A Futurity in a Futurity. With cooperation from Huntington Sales, we were given access to the judges scores at the 2025 Bluegrass Futurity. We eliminated all non-members from each class. We then ranked the SETLA owned cattle based on the judges scores to determine the SETLA Class Champion in each of the Classes.
The Board took one more step to help encourage newer member participation as some felt they could compete with more experienced members by creating two Divisions in each Class. The Board came up with the following criteria for the 2 Divisions. Division 1 were members who had NOT won a class with an animal where they are listed as the breeder on the Registration Papers. Division 2 were members who had won a class where they were listed as the breeder. The feedback was extremely positive. SETLA had 90 animals entered in the Bluegrass Futurity, their membership fees automatically got their animals entered in the SETLA Futurity in a Futurity. SETLA awarded 25 Class Champion Buckles to 17 different members.
Following are the results from the first ever SETLA Futurity in a Futurity.

Hey everyone and happy Junior Nationals month! I am extremely excited to see what this year’s TLBAA World Show and TLJN brings. Our Junior Board of Directors have been working diligently throughout the year preparing and making sure that all our competitions, prizes, as well as fun activities will be excellently showcased at this momentous event. From raising all of the funds in our budget at shows and sales, to going out of our comfort zone and advocating for ourselves, it has been a great season for the TLBT Board. While closing out this show season I can reflect on how it has impacted me as a person and working with a great team. I am truly thankful for all the moments and time that I have spent with our youth group this year. I can’t wait to make more memories while being involved with the TLBT one last time as a senior next year. But to all my officers and directors this year, thank you for truly giving the youth Texas Longhorn industry your all, and I’m very lucky to have had the honor of leading this group! For each and every one of you competing at nationals this month, I wish you all good luck!
Sincerely your TLBT National President

Non-Haltered and Haltered Entry Requirements to Remain Unchanged for the Upcoming Show Season
The TLBAA Board of Directors voted on May 29th to delay the implementation of the rule pertaining to NonHaltered/Haltered shows and entries that was approved earlier. Currently the rule will not go into effect on July 1, 2026 for the 2026/2027 Show Season. During the coming year, a Sub-Committee will be formed to review the data and formulate options to present to the board before the 2026/2027 show season.
For the upcoming show season, the eligibility for the Non-Haltered/Haltered animals will remain unchanged.
Find all the upcoming shows with Non-Haltered Classes available on the last page of each Trails issue or by looking at the event calendar on www.tlbaa.org.
Please be sure and submit your Qualifying Show application before August 1, 2025 for the upcoming show year. You can find the application on the TLBAA website. The office must have a show application submitted for the show to be listed in Save The Date in Trails; on the TLBAA website and in Horns.
