APPEAL GOES OUT FOR MORE TEWKESBURY VOLUNTEERS

" Front cover masthead photograph by Jack Boskett. Tewkesbury Abbey in the mist from Bushley Green.

Tewkesbury has an excellent band of volunteer workers but - says Karen Brennan - unfortunately they are a rare species, seemingly in decline. Existing volunteers are becoming overstretched as they are invariably actively supporting three or four charities or local causes. In an attempt to reverse this tend the volunteers at Bookworm in Tewkesbury are launching Tewkesbury Volunteers. Organiser Karen Brennan says: “There are so many different opportunities available from helping to run stalls or bucket rattling to helping to organise the paperwork or funding for events; all are equally valuable and help to provide a vibrant community. “We understand that coming forward to volunteer can be a daunting prospect and that everyone has existing commitments to work around.” Volunteering can entail a regular, weekly, commitment, but there are also plenty of ad hoc requirements and with a larger pool of people to

call on the pressure on existing volunteers will be relieved; if everyone helped just one or twice a year it could make a huge difference. “As Bookworm is situated in the High Street, - open six days a week we are hoping that anyone with some spare time or a special talent they would like to use for the benefit of the community, will feel able to pop in for a chat with our volunteers to discover what there is available, said Karen. “I'm sure we have something for everyone!” If you are an organisation within Tewkesbury needing volunteers please let Karen know what your requirements are and the volunteers will endeavour to help. For more information contact Karen Brennan Tewkesbury’s Volunteers care of Bookworm, 150 High St., Tewkesbury, GL20 5JP. Telephone: 01684 438385 or Email bookworm150@ talktalk.net

The resulting breathtaking construction cost well over £1million, financed by an anonymous private benefactor and equipped through contributions from charitable grant giving trusts, Worcestershire County Council and an energetic fundraising campaign by staff and parents. The main work in the programme will be Elgar’s moving settings of poems by Laurence Binyon, The Spirit of England (1915/16) with soprano soloists Kathryn Skipp and Kate Bennett. The World War I theme will be maintained with performances of ‘Trench Songs’ by Gloucestershire composer and poet, Ivor Gurney - four songs that he wrote in 1917 while serving in the front line in France. Tewkesbury School's refurbished swimming pool was officially opened by Borough Councillor, Robert Bird last month. The facility, which is part of the school’s Sports Centre, has had a new air handling unit and a new heating system installed. The roof has been replaced, the pool structure enhanced and new windows installed. Students at the school are now enjoying the up-to-date facilities which enhance their sporting curriculum and the Sports Centre Swim School is providing swimming lessons for children aged four years and above. Paul Baker, Commercial Manager at Tewkesbury School said, “The Swim School is a brilliant opportunity for the local community to use Tewkesbury School’s pool facilities and benefit from the investment made to keep this facility open.” Swimming lessons follow The Amateur Swimming Associations (ASA) National Plan for Teaching Swimming. Lessons are run in blocks of 10 week terms and cost £40 for the term. For more information please email nicola.rees@tewkesburyschool.org ! CLUBHOUSE TAKES SHAPE

In 2013 Bredon Star RFC was chosen by the RFU to become a Lead Up and Legacy Centre for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. As part of its participation in that programme it received a grant of £70,000 from the RFU. In addition the club secured a £50,000 share of Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund, which has been helping breathe new life into community sports facilities suitable for grassroots sport. The club has also been supported with grants from Wychavon District Council and Severn Waste Environmental Fund. These grants, together with significant sums of money raised by the club in its numerous fundraising activities over the last couple of years, are being used to finance the building of a clubhouse adjacent to the club pitches in Bredon. The investment will enhance the club’s facilities helping thousands of local young people play rugby. The construction

phase of the new clubhouse project is now completed, the patio doors that extend almost of the entire wall of the clubroom overlooking the playing field have been installed and work has started in earnest painting the rooms ready for the fit out of the interior space. The kitchen, flooring and furniture have been ordered and that priority for a rugby club ‘the bar’ will soon be put in place. The project is moving ahead as scheduled and is scheduled to open this month. The eight-pane set of aluminium bifold doors and the kitchen window were supplied and fitted by local company Clearway Windows & Doors, who subsidised the cost as sponsorship for the club. Bredon Star RFC’s chairman, Kevin Falvey said: “We are delighted with the progress with our clubhouse project and look forward to welcoming club members, opposition teams, local schools and members of our community to the new facility.”

STAR’S MIDLAND VASE DEFENCE STARTS WITH A WIN Bredon Star RFC began the defence of their North Midlands Vase at Ross-on-Wye last month. Star had beaten Ross twice last year before being promoted to Gloucester One in heated contests and knew it would not be an easy game, but fought to run

out winners by 15pts to 6. They now face Telford Hornets in the Quarter Finals. Star’s first league action at their new level was at the much-fancied Widden Old Boys . Again a great effort by Bredon brought victory, this time by 25pts to 15. Town band marks fortieth in style Tewkesbury Town Band have been busy celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the current band, following its re-forming in 1974. The Band’s Anniversary year has so far seen the commissioning of a special 4.2% ABV band beer named 'TTB Gold' from the local micro-brewery, Popes, near Worcester. Band members were able to participate in the brewing process, and the beer was available throughout Tewkesbury during late July - as well as at the Band’s annual appearance at the CAMRA Cotswold Beer Festival.

As a thank you to the people of Tewkesbury for their continuing support of the band, a special concert was held at the abbey in the Spring. Summer brought a tour of Ireland, via Bangor in Wales, and in 12 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

The centrepiece of the Band’s anniversary celebrations has been the commissioning of a special major musical work to mark this milestone in the Band’s history and the recent passing of the Band’s first MD, Miles Amherst, and long-time stalwart and former chairman of the Band, Peter Williams; both of whom passed away during 2013. The commissioning of this piece has been made possible by grants from the Arts Council England and the Norman Jones Trust (managed by Brass Bands England) as well

as donations from local businesses, communities and individuals. Tewkesbury Town Band would like to express their thanks to all who have contributed towards making this project a reality. The premiere of this new work will be at our Anniversary Concert in the fantastic setting of Tewkesbury Abbey on the evening of Saturday 25th October 2014 with tickets available from the Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury. On 1st November 2014 the Band will also be marking the 80th birthday of percussionist Keith Rose, who has spent half of his life as a band member.

Tewkesbury food bank listed for community fund Tewkesbury Foodbank has been shortlisted for the Lloyds Bank Community Fund, and has a chance of being awarded a grant of up to £3,000 to help it to continue its good work in the community. “This award would enable us build on our support to those in food crisis," says spokesperson Gordon Sandfield. “It would enable us to continue to work with our local churches and various local neighbourhood projects by providing food to kick start Holiday Clubs for children being set up in the main disadvantaged areas of our community. Providing one nutritionally balanced meal per day for the children who attend these clubs will not only ease the pressure on the family finances but also ensure they eat healthily.” The Foodbank also

wants to be able to provide food for adult cookery classes where tuition would be given on basic cookery skills and how to make inexpensive healthy family meals. Since Tewkesbury Foodbank opened in April 2013 it has helped over 1200 local adults and children and issued 6.5 tonnes of food. The Foodbank needs your vote to secure the grant monies which you can do online at www.communityfund.llo ydsbank.com/communityfund. When the Bell Hotel was put up for sale in 1871, the price of £1,000 included the bowling green to the rear. Kelly’s Directory of 1914 claimed that it was otherwise known as the “Monks Garden.” Tewkesbury Abbey’s estate used to extend as far as the 1897 Pleasure Gardens - which was the site originally of the road to Gloucester before the modern A38 was turnpiked in about 1800. Mrs. Craik explored the area in 1852 when she was inspired to write John Halifax, Gentleman. After the sale, the bowling green was still a great attraction. In 1886 as many as 200 people and a military band were reported on the green. It was the site of the Regatta Ball until 1921. The end as a greensward came in 1973 due, Brian Linnell claimed, to an “exorbitant rent rise.” The Bowling Club moved to its present location and houses were inevitably built on this historic amenity after 1983 (D). Betsy Harmony was on top form, singing her way through a perfectly pitched performance of tunes from the 1930’s to 1950’s, ideal for a nostalgic sing-along while Gary and Sara Boom from Gloster Jive and Swing showcased fast paced Lindy Hop dance moves. The fashion show elicited admiring looks from the audience, and included original vintage clothing as well as vintage inspired outfits from both local retailers and stallholders including M&Co, Retro Attire, Indika, Holly’s Vintage and Break Vintage charity shop. BREDON BOAT RACES 2014 The 2014 Bredon Bell Boat races were the best yet. This event is now held annually and gets better every year. 17 teams competed (with names like Hancocks Hooligans, The Hamsters and Oggy) on the River Avon at the Old Rectory Meadow, Bredon on Saturday 6th September and great fun was had by all. Alongside the excitement on the river there were stalls for ‘Top Tat’, books, greetings cards, bottle tombola, jolly jam jars for children, bowling for a pig, childrens golf game and children’s bowling. A cider tent, a tea and cakes tent, a barbeque and entertainment from the locally acclaimed ReVIVals. The weather was kind and this was a great family day out, where all aspects of village life were represented. Local business Johnson Scotia were this year’s sponsors and

entered a team, along with Meadows Farm Shop, Folley Gardens Vet, Gym and Tonic gym, Bredons Hancocks School, Bredon WI and many teams made up of families and groups of friends. The church’s main object in organising the event is to bring the whole community together for a fun time and this was certainly achieved with attendance up 50% on last year. At the same time funds were raised for the upkeep of the historic and beautiful St Giles Church. The Johnson Scotia team (Scotia Warriors) just beat the Micky’s Mates Team (last year’s winners) by less than a second and are the new ‘head of the river’. The Under 14’s race was won by The Young Uns.

VISIT THE TODDINGTON NARROW GAUGE RAILWAY FOR THE END OF SEASON GALA ON 4th AND 5th OCTOBER ! Steve Mourton from the North Gloucestershire Railway tells us about this interesting Gala event.

The narrow gauge railway based at the GWR's Toddington station has the same track width used extensively in the First World War and seen on Michael Portillo's TV series 'Railways and The Great War'. It is having an end of season gala featuring four working steam locomotives – residents JUSTINE and SENA 15 plus two visitors, STANHOPE and TOURSKA. SENA 15 and STANHOPE were built in the First World War. Our new diesel locomotive will also hopefully be in use, having previously worked on the Tal-y-lynn Railway in Wales. There will be an enhanced train service from 11am to 4pm. An all-day ticket costs just £5 for adults, £2 for accompanied 5 – 15 year olds, and is free for under–fives. Trains will run at frequent intervals between Toddington

narrow gauge station and Didbrook Loop, stopping at California Crossing on the outward journey. Passengers alight from the train here to view the recently constructed 32mm gauge live steam model railway

layout, a great treat for young and old alike. Be sure to visit the engine shed and look inside our working signal box, California Crossing, which used to be located in Gloucester, before catching the train on to Didbrook Loop. The full journey takes 25 minutes. The ticket price includes as many rides on the narrow gauge railway as you want, and the attractions at

California Crossing. Refreshments are available at the GWR's Flag & Whistle Café, with free parking in Toddington station yard, adjacent to the narrow gauge railway. GWR trains will be running to Toddington from Cheltenham Racecourse station. Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway, Toddington, Glos, GL54 5DT.

TEWKESBURY MARTIAL ARTS CLUB HITS THE MARK The White Tiger Tae Kwon-Do and Self Defence club in Tewkesbury has just been accredited with the prestigious Sport England “Clubmark” award. Only a handful of Martial Arts organisations have been given this award which is presented when a club can demonstrate a continuing commitment to sporting excellence and comply with strict minimum operating standards. The club’s chief Instructor, Mr Paul Wanklyn, a 5th Degree Black belt said “I am immensely proud of both this achievement and the club. We were the first Martial Arts club in the county to be accredited with the “Club Standards” award in 2012 and now this is the icing on the cake. My wife and club instructor Jill and I have put a lot of

hard work into gaining this award. This also means that parents and individuals alike can be assured that we have all the necessary qualifications when choosing a club for their children or themselves.” A Sport England spokesman said “We recognise the values and the commitment made by clubs to develop high quality, welcoming envi-

ronments for all participants.” The club trains at the Wheatpieces Community Centre, Walton Cardiff, Tewkesbury on Monday and Wednesday nights from 7pm. Anyone interested in joining can contact Mr Wanklyn on 07722 584919, visit the website at www.white-tigertkd.com or drop into the club.

SEVERN UNIT MVS LINKS TEWKESBURY WITH BURNHAM-ON-SEA Members of Severn and Bristol Units of the Maritime Volunteer Service joined 30 emergency services across the West Country to take part in the annual Rescue Services Day at Burnham-on-Sea on Sunday 31st August. Nic Price Head of Tewkesbury based Severn Unit said “It was a most exciting day with hovercrafts, lifeboats and a RAF helicopter performing displays in front of thousands of people on the seafront. We were especially proud when Cllr Martin Cox the Mayor of Burnham and Highbridge visited our stand and took a great interest in the Service. It was encouraging that we made contact with possible new members and we also had the opportunity to discuss with local emergency services about the flooding on the Somerset levels during the early part of this year and similarities were drawn with our own flooding in Tewkesbury in 2007.”

BECKY TAYLOR – STAR MEMBER HAS LOST 29.5LBS & 29” In January 2014 I underwent back surgery to correct some issues I was having with my discs. I was out of action for months which saw an increase in my weight fairly rapidly. My clothes no longer fitted me and I hated seeing any photos of myself. Thinking about it I guess it knocked my confidence. Once I was given the all clear by my Surgeon, I made the decision to do something about losing the weight I had so quickly gained. I made myself a promise that I wouldn’t be in that situation again. I contacted Curves via Facebook, made my appointment and the following Wednesday I went along. Kirstie took my initial health history, measurements and weigh in. I knew what to expect weight wise because I had joined weight watchers the evening before but the measurements were a complete eye opener. It’s one thing knowing you have put on weight, but seeing it on a tape measure it’s a scary feeling. My first work out was easier than I had expected and I was fully supported by the staff. The half hour seemed to fly by and didn’t feel like a chore. The thing to remember is the equipment is predominantly hydraulic and you will only ever get out what you put in. The great thing about Curves is its just half an hour out of your day, every woman can find half hour, there are no men, there are no mirrors, and everybody is there because they choose to be there. I personally find it inspiring when you see the names of the members on the wall with their loses. My motivation every month is knowing that my smaller clothes are less tight – some even fit me now, knowing my fitness is improving, seeing how many inches I‘ve lost on a tape measure and watching my named flower move across the room in the gym. I’ve now been a member for 6 months and have lost a total of 29 inches & 29.5lbs, chipping away at it every month. I really believe that this works well in conjunction with healthy eating. I’ve tried lots of different diet and exercise plans but nothing really beats this. Now there is 29 inches & 29lbs less of me I have more energy, I have developed a passion of exercise, I feel bad if I don’t attend and I’ve taken up running – go me!!!!!!!! If I can do it anybody can ☺ BECKY TAYLOR

POLICE NOTES with Sgt Henry Wright

A DOZEN TOP TIPS TO HELP PREVENT YOU BEING A VICTIM OF CRIME

I have been submitting these articles for the last eighteen months and hopefully some of the information has stopped some of you from being victims of crime, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright. However, there is nothing worse than reviewing our daily crime statistics and seeing that there have been overnight dwelling burglaries. More often than not these crimes could have been avoided by some very simple measures. I mentioned this last year but when the nights draw in there is always an increase in crime. We have had several burglaries where doors have been left unlocked and two where the thieves have also stolen the family car as the keys were left hanging by the front door. The inconvenience of this is huge and it is so easily avoided by placing car keys out of sight and taking them upstairs when you retire to bed. Have a look at the crime prevention tips below if these are implemented they may prevent you being a victim of crime. " Keep your doors and windows locked even

when you’re in – burglars will try doors to find one that is unlocked. " Make your home look lived in – use timer switches or leave your television on when you’re not home. " Always remember to switch on your burglar alarm if you have one. " Keep valuables out of view – burglars will look through windows to see if there is anything worth stealing. " If you have a garage, use it to store your car – burglars will look at your car to judge whether to break in the house for the keys or

whether your house might contain items they would want to steal. " Cancel the milk and newspapers when you go on holiday and find a trusted neighbour, friend or relative to move your post and open and close blinds and curtains. " Door chimes and burglar alarms will deter a burglar from entering your property. " Being a victim of sneak-in burglary can have both emotional and financial effects. High value goods are costly to replace if stolen, and items such as phones and cameras often hold information with sentimental value such as photos, which cannot be replaced. " Keep doors and windows locked when in the garden having BBQs, gardening, hanging out the washing, etc. " Don’t leave garden tools or furniture outside, as they can be used by burglars to enter your property. " Dispose of packag-

ing for expensive items properly; don’t advertise what is in your house. " Register your property on www.immobilise.com o that if it is stolen and recovered by the Police it can then be returned to you.

Halloween On a different topic it will soon be Halloween and we get many calls relating to anti-social behaviour and minor damage from eggs and flour being thrown at properties. This is can be very distressing for the elderly or vulnerable residents so if you would prefer not to be visited by trick or treaters please contact PCSO Karl Simpson from our community who will e-mail you a poster for your home. His e-mail address is karl.simpson@gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk Police Sergeant Henry Wright Tewkesbury Police

EAT CAKE TO FUND CHRISTMAS LIGHTS These delicious sandwiches (pictured above) as well as homemade cake will be served at the Tewkesbury Abbey tearoom on Saturday 4th October by volunteers raising money to erect the town's Christmas lights. This is the second fundraising event organised by Andrew and Christine Turner, having raised £550 in August with a similar event. The tearoom in Church Street will be open from 10.30 am for teas and light refreshments and a percentage of the profits will be donated towards the costs of paying for the town's Christmas lights display. This year the Christmas lights switch on and high street market will be taking place on Sunday 23rd November. More information is available at www.tewkesburychristmaslights.co.uk. TEWKESBURY COOKSHOP NEW OWNERS More positive news for Tewkesbury High Street, as the well known Cookshop has been taken over by new local owners James and Helen Townsend, who have enthusiastic plans to restock and gradually improve the shop. They will be bringing in new products and keeping pace with current trends in cookware. "We are really excited to have the shop," said Helen, "and are keen to involve the local community in our plans. We welcome suggestions for any new products or improvements they would like to see!" Helen worked at the cookshop several years ago for the previous owner, and before that for his father. She is very happy to be back,

and her husband James, who runs a local data company, is relishing his new role in developing and improving this established shop. They are particularly interested in hearing from local producers who might be interested in supplying their goods. "Please keep popping in," said James, "we will continue to restock, and there will be plenty of

improvements in the coming months. We've got lots of ideas!" They are particularly glad of their enthusiastic staff, Debbie and Sue, who have been a huge support during the transition, and are both full of suggestions. "They are a tremendous asset," said Helen, "we're very lucky to have them."

Keeping your pet calm when fireworks light up the skies in November Fireworks can make celebrations exciting for us, but they’re not always quite as much fun for our pets. There are things we can do to help keep them calmer and safer. It’s up to you as their owner to help them cope and make sure their fireworks nights are as easy as they can be. " Does my pet need help coping with fireworks? Generally, most pets will struggle with fireworks. Animals have acute senses: for them every flash and bang can be unexpected and alarming. Think about how your pet reacts to fireworks; or if you haven’t had them when there’s been fireworks, how they react to loud noises. Do they show any of the following behaviours? " Cats and Dogs ● Cowering or hiding behind the sofa ● Trying to run away or escape (this can include digging up the carpet) ● Soiling the house ● Restlessness, e.g. pacing and panting for dogs, and over grooming (cats) ● Barking incessantly (dogs only!) If they show any of these signs, your pet might need help coping " What can I do to help? Ideally, it’s best to prepare some time in advance. Speak to your vet at least six to twelve weeks in advance. Long term behavioural therapy really needs to be looked at 6 months in advance. Pet Advice

Top Ten Tips Provide a den or hiding place for your pet whilst fireworks are going off " Use a pheromone Diffuser as close to the den or hiding place as possible, or where your pet spends most of its time " Ignore fearful behaviour, dogs may pick up on their owners’ anxiety making the problem worse " Walk your dog early in the evening before fireworks start " Ensure windows, doors and cat flaps remain closed during firework season to both prevent pets escaping and reduce the noise " Ensure your cats have access to enough litter trays during firework season especially if you’re keeping them inside " Provide distractions, in the form of new toys and chews. Draw curtains and put the TV on to mask any noise. " DO NOT punish your pet! This will only make your pet more distressed. " Try not to leave your pets alone when fireworks are going off. " Speak to yo ur vet or our behaviour nurse Zoe to get more ideas on how to resolve this longer term. "

Wide-eyed children, their parents’ and grandparents travel on a magical steam train from Cheltenham Race Course to visit the great man in his grotto at Winchcombe. To enter, email santacompetition@gwsr.com and remember to include your name, address and telephone number. The closing date is Wednesday 15th October. All correct entries will be entered into a draw; the first out of the hat wins the prize. The winner will be notified by email and also announced in the November edition of Tewkesbury Direct. Tewkesbury in bloom wins town category Tewkesbury has been given a prestigious Gold Award in the Heart of England in Bloom competition - and also walked away with the title of ‘Best’ in the town category. This was an amazing achievement by all involved and reflects the hard work of all the groups in Tewkesbury whose joint efforts help to improve the environment.

WWI Centenary: Month by Month - by John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society

Judging took place in July, and among the areas inspected by the panel were Bredon Road Allotments, wheelbarrows planted up by four local schools, the coronets and tubs in the town centre, Marina Court and the beds by the Black Bear. The judges were also taken to see the new Arrivall sculptures at Stonehills roundabout.

FREE PUNCTURE REPAIR KIT with any new tyre - offer for October 2014 only

The Undertaking by Audrey Magee PB £7.99 This is an unusual story, very well written and cleverly using dialogue to tell some of the events of Nazi military action and army life in Russia and eventually to failure in Stalingrad. Unusual, as it starts with the proxy marriage of Peter and Katharina who have never met only seeing a picture of each other. This arrangement secures Peter honeymoon leave away from the Russian front and for Katharina, a widow's pension should he be killed. When they meet they like each other and love quickly blossoms despite his initial arrival, dirty and louse ridden, much to the disapproval of her parents. His father-in-law introduces Peter to Dr Weinart, a man with good connections to the Nazi hierarchy who secures him an extension to his leave with him helping round up Jews, before he then returns to the front.Katharina and her parents move to a better district and are ostracised by old neighbours, as they move in a privileged party

environment under the wing of Dr Weinart. Peter and his troop edge ever deeper into Russia suffering cold, hardship and only surviving by plunder and camaraderie. Katharina and her parents enjoy a high social life, narrated against the vivid nights of RAF bombing raids. Eventually the destruction of their apartment forces them to return to their old flat and neighbours who no longer want to know them; until the Russians conquer a ruined Berlin. How Peter and Katherine survive the war and their brief love affair touches their lives is beautifully told in this readable story which is much more than a novel of war. Selected by: Ian B. KEMERTON SUMMER FETE Blessed with near perfect weather, Kemerton village fete on Saturday 30th August was a huge success. Strong winds and rain in the days leading up to the event proved challenging to the willing band of helpers who helped with set-up, and many a gazebo tried to take flight! However, on the day itself, the wind dropped and the sun came out, encouraging large visitor numbers and helping to raise nearly £4,000 to be shared equally between Kemerton Village Hall and the parish church of St. Nicholas for vital on-going maintenance. Visitors were entertained with a rousing repertoire of music performed by Tewkesbury Town Band while Pig-on-the-Hill and Kemerton WI ensured that everyone enjoyed delicious food. Local groups provided a wide range of stalls where you could purchase everything from a commode to a camellia! Kemerton residents, Roger and George Workman, provided further entertainment with a range of traditional village games including Splat-the-Rat and Bowling for the Pig enjoyed by both adults and children alike. The children also had fun on the bouncy castle and learned how to throw pots with local potter, Oliver Herford. One of the most interesting and intriguing sights of the afternoon was provided by keen local historian, Dave Devereux, who strolled around in military gear wearing a sandwich

board promoting a WW1 Exhibition to be held in Kemerton Village Hall on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November. This will commemorate those from Kemerton who fought in the Great

War, especially those who died. There will also be a display of military memorabilia from WW1 and pictures and mementos of Kemerton from 1900-1920.

making the halloween lantern is only half the fun Residents in Tewkesbury are avid makers of spooky lanterns made from Pumpkins. Here is a recipe, provided by Erin Baker, Chef and a co ordinator for the Priors Park allotment.

pumpkin and tomato soup Pastry ■ 2 tbsp light cooking oil (sunflower, vegetable, rapeseed) ■ 500g pumpkin or squash, peeled and seeds removed ■ 2 medium onions, finely chopped ■ 2 stalks celery, finely chopped ■ 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped ■ 1 400g tin chopped tomatoes ■ 800ml vegetable stock (may need a bit more or less) ■ salt and pepper to taste 1. Peel and roughly chop pumpkin or butternut squash. Place in a roasting tray and drizzle with 1 tbsp of oil. Roast at 200C or Gas Mark 7 for about 20 minutes or until nicely brown and soft. Alternatively, you can cut the pumpkin or squash in half, scoop

out the seeds and place cut side down on a baking tray. Roast in the oven until a knife is easily inserted and then flip over, wait until cool enough to handle then remove flesh from outer peel. 2. Chop the onions and celery and fry in 1 tbsp of oil until soft. Add garlic and cook for a couple more minutes. 3. Add tin tomatoes, roasted squash and enough vegetable

stock to just cover the ingredients in the pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cook for about 20 minutes. 4. Remove from heat and carefully whiz using a hand blender. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Add a bit of water, vegetable stock or cream if too thick. Add lemon juice or salt and pepper if needed. Top with a swirl of cream or some grated cheese!

APPERLEY PLAY WITH LASHINGS OF STYLE The results might never have be in doubt but the 700 plus crowd did not mind as the 2014 undefeated Lashings World XI sprinkled their star dust on a rural cricketing outpost and enjoyed two victories in T18 games, first against the host side and then against a North Glos invitational XI. In the first game, the legends of the game were pushed hard by the Apperley side with Luke Smith top scoring with a classy half-century in a valiant bid to chase

Lashings’ 182, with Herschelle Gibbs top scoring, in their 18 overs. The second game was a more comfortable Lashings victory with Wasim Jaffer, a former

posed for, contributed fully to a total that even with Chris Burrow’s, of Charlton Kings CC, man of the match hitting the Invitation XI could not match.

Club chairman, Brian Leeke, commented “It was a never to be forgotten day for a small club on a beautiful summers day. We will have made a substantial profit that

will be used for the club’s future development and we made a decent figure for our chosen charity, Chance2Shine”.

Fred Tandy, spokesman, said “We started at Gaerwen in Anglesey and the ride was quite scenic, we even saw a school of dolphins as we cycled the coast road to Conwy.” “The group pressed on to Wrexham then Ludlow and then home to Tewkesbury where a rapturous welcome awaited from friends and well wishers.” Fred would like to say a special thank you to George Workman, Tom Woods, Libby Russell, Dave Hodges, the riders of course and sponsors, family and well wishers.

DOMESTIC

PRIORS PARK COMMUNITY EDIBLE GARDEN by Erin Baker As summer leaves us we enjoy the fruits of the harvest including tomatoes, sweetcorn, runner beans and soon a variety of winter squash. The main crop potatoes are coming out of the ground gorgeous and take minutes to steam. The taste of homegrown veg can’t be beat. The sunflowers tower over the garden with the tallest being over 8 foot! They were grown from the ground up using seeds that we collected from the garden last year. Our lettuce crops have been going strong all summer and we are just starting to propagate some varieties that can overwinter.

The raised beds will soon be filled with green manures to improve the soil over the winter as well as crops that can over winter like broad beans, onions, spring brassicas and garlic. No rest for the wicked, we take full advantage of being able to use the soil year round. Green manures are crops that are grown for the benefit of the soil, not to eat. These include winter tares, field beans, buckwheat and grazing rye. The crops are cut down before they flower

and then tilled into the soil to release nutrients. The expansion of the community garden to include traditional allotment plots is well under way. We are now in the final stages of dividing the land into plots and recruiting members of the community to form an allotment association. If you live in Priors Park and are interested in your own allotment please contact Erin Baker on 07432 673069 or email ebaker@vision21.org.uk

Restoration Marvel In 2011 we featured the rescue of this old narrow gauge coach from the garden of the old corrugated iron bungalow between Teddington Hands and Ashchurch now known as Frogmill House. The coach is on WW1 vintage and was built for the great exhibition at Wembley. Here we have before and after restoration photographs and it can be seen on the narrow gauge railway at Toddington at the Steam Gala to be held on the 4th and 5th October. Local volunteers Allan Durant, Roger Butwell and Phil South have carried out the magnificent restoration work.

TEWKESBURY SCHOOL SHOW OFF THEIR NEW SENIOR RUGBY KIT

Tewkesbury School’s senior rugby team have kicked-off the new season in a brand new team kit thanks to local sponsors the Tewkesbury Fryer, Kingfisher Restaurant and Goodfellas Barbershop. The school team boasts a very solid group of 25 players who, at the end of last season, expressed the need for a new kit and so the players set to work designing kit online and started their fundraising. Over the summer, the school was very fortunate that local businessman, Marios Prokopiou of the Tewkesbury Fryer and the Kingfisher Restaurant in the town approached them and

was willing to generously donate £800 towards a new kit. Kyris Tsikkinis from Goodfellas Barbershop in Mitton then added an extra £200 to help buy a full team kit. Stuart Lockwood, teacher of PE and coach of the senior rugby team said “I am overwhelmed with the support that we have received from the local community. Purchasing a full rugby kit costs a lot of

money and the sponsorship from Marios and Kyri has helped hugely with being able to buy a well-deserved kit for the squad; we are pleased to carry their company names on the kit. The team is now planning a rugby tour early next year and will use the money from their earlier fundraising efforts towards this. We are now looking forward to a positive season ahead of us.”

BROWNIES CELEBRATING 100 YEARS AT OUT OF THE HAT Brownies, past and present, flocked to the ‘Out of the Hat’ Heritage Centre to visit the Brownie display, which is currently on show. During the two days of the Heritage open days last month (September), the Heritage Centre hosted a Brownie display, celebrating the Brownies Centenary. On show, were a range of uniforms from the last 100 years, starting with the Rosebud uniform of 1914, right through to the uniform worn today. Also on show were memorabilia; old books, annuals, badges and collectables. Visitors were encouraged to reminisce about

their time as a Brownie, some going back as far as the late 30’s. Among the visitors, during the two days were the Town Mayor, Christine Danter and Councillor Claire Wright (our Tewkesbury Division Girlguiding President). Also our County Girlguiding president Mrs Anne Cadbury.

Tewkesbury Division Girlguiding would like to thank all involved in arranging the display, including Tewkesbury Borough Council, Tourist Information Centre – ‘Out of the Hat’ Heritage Centre, M&Co and the Great Oaks charity shop in Newent for the kind loan of manikins to display the Brownie uniforms and to Tewkesbury Antiques Centre for the loan of a display case.

Also, thank you to all the Guiders how gener-

ously lent memorabilia.

The organisers also wish to thank local band, Deep Water, who entertained the guests and provided the musical entertainment during the evening. Last month Clive Woolford Motor Engineers were hosts to the ladies of the Kemerton WI for one of their basic car maintenance evenings. Ian Boskett led the evening with his warm, light-hearted sense of humour giving, informative talks and demonstrations. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all - and at the end everyone was very pleased to receive a goodie bag supplied by Andrew Page (Motor Factors) from Gloucester. At the end of the evening the WI showed their appreciation by donating £30 to CLIC Sargent, a charity strongly supported by Ian and Sue Boskett whose son was diagnosed with cancer aged just ten years old. Over the years Woolford's garage have hosted similar evenings at their premises on the Cotteswold Dairy Industrial Estate for Tewkesbury School Sixth form, church groups and other WI groups. Anyone interested in attending a similar evening can call the garage on 01684 293067 or email cwmotoreningeers@btconnect.com

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker On a crisp Autumn day there’s nothing quite like a brisk walk on high hills to take the air. The Malvern Hills have been popular with walkers since Victorian times, and this month’s ramble follows in some rather genteel footsteps. The route starts in St Ann’s Road - a lane

which strikes up into the hills from Bellevue Terrace in Great Malvern Town Centre. You can park your car in any of the nearby car parks. Go up St Ann’s Road (next to the Unicorn Inn) - 1) and when this road turns left, keep straight ahead into Happy Valley (2). The ascent becomes steeper, and eventually

MALVERN VIEWS

turns back down towards St Ann’s Well. At this point (3) go straight ahead on to a track which climbs upwards through Green Valley. Eventually you will meet the laid-out ride called the Lady Howard De Walden Drive. Bear right on to this track (4). The path encircles the last of the high hills of the Malvern chain North Hill. It’s hard surface was laid out in Victorian times when visitors flocked to the town to take the waters. The long distance Worcestershire Way now goes along this route. There are some fine views from here - looking north and, as the path strikes around the head of the hill, over the rolling Herefordshire

countryside. Follow the path all the way around the hill, and at the fork (5) keep on the left path to eventually return to a point above Green Valley. Instead of retracing your steps at this point, bear right and carry along the track until you reach cross tracks (6). Take the left path to descend. Keep on the main track until you rejoin the Happy Valley Lane. Bear right to reach St Ann’s Well (7). A popular café with outside seating area, St Ann’s Well was built in 1813 and houses an elaborately carved marble drinking fountain. Carry on down the lane which eventually meets St Ann’s Road. Turn left (8) and return to the town centre.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE Many patients ask me how much water they should be drinking, says David Slater, local Clinical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor. There are many different ideas put forward by different people so I will try to give a mid-road picture which will help everyone. amounts of clotting agents into the system. The " thicker" blood, for want of a better phrase, can cause all sorts of problems and is best treated through hydration - through drinking water. The simple addition of a few glasses of water to your daily intake actually assists you in maintaining a feeling of calm. It can also be an active constituent in helping you to prevent hypertension, constipation, headaches, respiratory problems all the way though to helping prevent heart problems too. There is no doubt about it. Water induces calm. Different people need different amounts, but I can promise you that a couple of glasses of water at room temperature will have an immediate effect upon reducing your tension. If you maintain a habit of drinking more water each day you will discover that you are better able to fight stress and resist the effects that stress can have. So how much, on average, would it be beneficial to drink ? Although there is one Chinese water therapy that says a bucketful of water each day on rising will benefit you, I can't actually imagine doing t hat! In this country most practitioners would suggest eight glasses of water would be an ideal minimum. It all depends on personal preference

and, of course, bladder control ! However you will find that as you drink water the more you get used to it the more you enjoy it. It actually gives you a genuine boost. There is no need to spend a fortune on expensive bottled water, you know. We are lucky here. The standard of tap water is high. I would suggest that you drink it cool rather than cold. It is far easier to drink and more beneficial to the system that way. So, to sum up : Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Drink two glasses of water first thing in the morning - even while you are waiting for the kettle to boil for your first cuppa. Some people like to add some lemon juice to the water. That is entirely up to you. Drink a glass of water BEFORE each meal and not with the meal. This can be a useful aid to weight control and weight loss. When you drink alcohol make sure you drink water too ( two sips of water to one of alcohol ). So, you can have a glass of wine but then your next drink will be water. You can halve your alcoholic consumption in thi s way which is beneficial to health and pocket! Have water with you at home, at work, in the car, when out and about. Make water an integral part of your day, purposefully. David Slater

NEW RANGE OF PET BEDS AND TOYS IN STOCK NOW

REMEMBER, REMEMBER This month I am focussing on hedgehogs, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue at Beckford, near Tewkesbury. Although I have written about our spikey friends before, it is worth remembering that their numbers are continuing to decline in the UK and, although not yet down to a level where they are considered ‘endangered’, the speed of the decline is very worrying. We need to do all we can to protect the hedgehogs that are still around, visiting our gardens. One of the problems that hedgehogs face has come about because of the change in the way we create and look after our gardens. Hedgehogs cover a very large area while foraging for their food of earthworms, beetles and caterpillars every night. Whereas they used to be able to easily access many gardens one by one during the hours of darkness, finding a good supply of food items, modern gardens have solid fences with no way through and an increasing amount of decking and paving leaving gardens either inaccessible or devoid of much suitable food. It is any easy task to either leave a gap underneath fences or create a small, hedgehog-sized opening between each garden so that they can move from site to site while foraging.

and can climb out without a problem. Spare a thought for hedgehogs and other wildlife that can benefit from the habitat you can provide in your garden. For more information on Vale Wildlife Rescue please visit our website www.valewildlife.org.uk or call 01386 882288 November 5th is fast approaching and is a time when we keep our fingers crossed that no wildlife, will be caught out sheltering in bonfires set up days before they are going to be lit. If you intend to have a bonfire at any time of the year, always rebuild it in a different location on the day you are going to burn it – never set light to it in the place it has been sitting for days or weeks beforehand. Another hedgehog (and other wildlife) hazard can be your garden pond. Hedgehogs are pretty good swimmers and can quickly get to the edge of a pond if they happen to fall in, but if they are then met with steep sides that they cannot easily walk out onto, they are trapped in the water and will eventually drown. Always ensure that there are areas of shallow-sloping edges to your pond so that any animal that does fall in
