Green light for new outlet development Proposals for a £60m factory outlet and garden centre off the M5 at Ashchurch have been given the green light from the Government. Developer Robert Hitchins Ltd can now forge ahead with plans to bring the retail and leisure complex to a 23-hectare site on the A46, along with up to 1,000 jobs on completion and more than 200 during construction. Tewkesbury Borough Councillors voted in favour of the application back in March. Read the story on page 31.

A new book by Helen Dunmore is always a treat. She varies her themes and time periods, choosing November 1960 for her latest novel. The reader knows from the opening pages that all must end well as we begin our journey into the book, travelling with Simon Callington to join his wife, Lily and children at the coast. The title of 'Exposure' is most appropriate as we learn how Simon survives and his past is revealed and exposed. Muswell Hill in 1960 is well portrayed as the Callington household enjoy a happy domestic life. Simon, a civil servant at the Admiralty, Lily a part-time French teacher, their three young children growing up. Life is good. The cloak and dagger of espionage is manifested by two of Simon's colleagues, their communist backgrounds well disguised, especially by Julian Clowde, through seniority, and Giles Holloway, by eccentricity and a reputation as a drinker. Simon's life is ripped apart after he agrees to help out his old friend, Giles, they share a past going back to Simon's days at university. Giles has taken a top secret file home given to him by Clowde to secretly photograph and then return in the morning. At home that evening he takes a drunken tumble, breaks his legs and eventually ends up in hospital. Simon retrieves the file.

Simon was uncertain as to whether or not to help out his old friend. A decision he regrets when the police arrive and Simon is arrested, Lily is threatened and as time passes, and savings dwindle, she lets their home and disappears off down to Kent. Clowde is influential and frames Simon, while Giles remains ill in hospital where his condition worsens. The 'Exposure' of the title is not only how Simon survives to be aboard the coastal train, but how the undercover activities within the Admiralty are revealed against a domestic background of a loving couple in 1960. A mention of Spam and instant potato to itemise just two tiny details of the author's perfection of period detail. All of us old enough to remember "Smash" will enjoy this excellent story setting. Refugee supporters head for France We all know Tewkesbury has a fantastic community spirit, with many big hearted individuals, writes Shelby Powell. The latest act of kindness comes from the town's Refugee Support Group who will be making trip number five over the channel to distribute donations of clothing to refugees in need. These regular trips to France started in October 2015 and have only been made possible with the generous support of the community and local businesses. A group of four consisting of Judith Williams, Jo Roberts, Richard Haynes and Father Peter of Saint Joseph's Church plan to transport and distribute the clothing donations made by local people to

TADS STAGE MODERN ADAPTATION OF CLASSIC Tewkesbury Arts & Drama Society (TADS) are producing a modern day adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's classic play, Dr Faustus. This exciting, new production follows the tragic hero, played by local musician Ian Bishop, on his rise from lowly busker to celebrity chart topper. The play will also feature blues tracks and original music performed by members of the cast. The temptation of fame and wealth is Faustus' flaw and leads to his drug-induced downfall. TADS has an excellent reputation for producing high-quality, alternative plays and musicals. A PACKED OCTOBER TIMETABLE FOR GWR

TEWKESBURY BLINDS & CURTAINS

October is shaping up to be a very busy month for the award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, with lots of events taking place. One of the highlights of the heritage railway’s calendar, the Autumn Diesel Weekend, will be held on Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th October. Food fans are expected to flock to the first ever Cotswold Food & Drink Fayre on 22nd/23rd October, and the month’s special events are rounded of with Halloween ‘Steam & Scream’ Specials on Saturday 29th October. The Diesel Weekend offers families the chance to enjoy the sights and sounds of a bygone age, as the GWR’s fleet of vintage diesel locomotives haul trains throughout the weekend. Services run every 45 minutes, starting at 9.30am from Toddington and 9.45am from Cheltenham Racecourse. Services wil also stop at Winchcombe and Gotherington stations. Visitors can also take a ‘behind the scenes’ look around the GWR’s locomotive and carriage maintenance facilities. The majority of the

Heritage diesel locomotives at Toddington railway’s fleet of diesels are now well past their fiftieth birthdays, and have been restored to feature the authentic British Rail liveries of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Food Fayre delights

The Cotswold Food & Drink Fayre (22nd/23rd October) brings together a host of local food and drink producers at Toddington Railway Station. Visitors will be

able to sample a mouthwatering array of cheeses, pies, sausages, cakes, breads and preserves, herbs, spices, wines and ciders - and buy delicious Christmas gifts too. There will also be cookery demonstrations. The fayre takes place 10am-5pm each day, with free admission and parking. Steam and diesel train rides are available at normal fares. Tewkesbury U3A marks 25 years Tewkesbury & District U3A marked its 25th birthday with a special celebration tea party at the Hilton Puckrup Hall on Saturday 24th September. traiture and her works have included a tiger, owl and a vulture. “Drawing is definitely a labour of love for me and my style focusses heavily on detail so my drawings can take up to twenty hours to complete,” Emma explained. “I have always been drawn to monochrome images as I feel they can have a greater impact on the viewer. “I find that taking the colour out of an image strips it of any distractions allowing the subject to speak for itself and for its unique character to really shine through. Charcoal pencil allows me to get a great range of tones in my work as well as the intricate detail I strive for. Tewkesbury Cruising and Sailing Club hosted the town's 93rd Annual Regatta last month, writes Shelby Powell. The event is a deeply rooted tradition in the town's calendar of events having started off as an all rowing competition based at the Mill Avon with punting and boater hats being the order of the day. This year's event

included two days of sailing competitions, pig roast, disco and fund raising for the RNLI. Club spokesperson Sally Lawrence comments “Seven Sailing Cruisers raced Saturday morning and afternoon in very testing light winds. “Dinghy sailors had a two hour race Saturday afternoon. “The fleet comprised of junior members to more experienced club members who have represented the club at international level. “Sunday saw increasing winds for the deciding race for the cruisers which was won by Chris Fornara & Brian Mann. “Three dinghy races resulted in the coveted Rose Bowl being won by Matt Thompson and Mark Fowler.”

THE YEAR SO FAR AT VALE We are now coming towards the end of the busy spring and summer season at Vale Wildlife Hospital, writes Caroline Gould. Casualty figures to the end of August (3,331 admitted so far) show that it is the busiest year since 2012 - and the total for the year looks set to exceed that year’s 4,421 total. This total means that an average of almost 14 injured animals have been brought in to Vale every single day of the year so far. As usual, the biggest cause of injuries throughout the breeding season has been the domestic cat, closely followed by road traffic collisions but there have also been a notable number of fishing related and shooting incidents. Some of the species that we have dealt with are: 36 badgers, 278 blackbirds, 487 hedgehogs, 40 pipistrelle bats, 17 sparrowhawks, 2 otters, 4 wild boar, 35 tawny owls, 82 foxes, 20 green woodpeckers, 6 manx shearwaters, 30 roe deer and many more – 114 different species in total. St Mary’s Lane 1854: one of the “most filthy thoroughfares in town” St. Mary’s Lane hosted a plethora of medieval cottages and industrial buildings, which changed use frequently before demolition to make the car parks, writes John Dixon. In 1901 there were 27 homes in St Mary’s Lane, intertwined with the commercial buildings. In the early 19th century, sanitary engineer T. W. Rammel, in his 1854 report, recorded that St. Mary's Lane “is described as having previously been one of the worst and most filthy thoroughfares in the town”. Hopefully things had improved by the 20th century and the black and white building had been bought by F. J. Gyngell in 1921 and gradually converted into a garage. In the photograph below we can see the former St Mary’s Chemical Works. Next was an entrance known as Lady’s Walk halfway down where there were said to be two communal toilets for the people from the top half of St. Mary's Lane. Today it is an anonymous part of the Wetherspoon’s Car Park.

TEWKESBURY BIG WEEKEND CAN WE MAKE IT BIGGER AND BETTER IN 2017? The answer is YES WE CAN but not without your help. We need groups, clubs, societies, schools, bands in fact anyone willing to take part in our walking street parade through the Town on Saturday May 13th. We also need Pubs, Clubs and Groups of people [aged over 16] to take part in our Bell Boat races on Sunday May 14th, no experience is necessary, you just need to have a Team of eight people per boat. All safety equipment is provided and you can help raise funds for our nominated charities. Come and find out what you can do to join in the fun. We are having an open event upstairs in the Library at Theoc House, Tewkesbury on Monday October 10th starting at 6.00pm. Everyone is welcome. This year’s event included a walking parade, a river parade, bell boat racing, fairground entertainment, and music and stalls around the streets, and we were able to raise a fantastic amount to donate to our Charities. Cheques of £750 each to were presented Macmillan Cancer Research, The Town Mayor’s Charities, the Avon Navigation Trust, Tewkesbury Boys Brigade. Smaller dona-

tions were also made to the Animal Shelter, Maritime Volunteer Service and Tewkesbury Town Colts.

ALONG THE SEVERN FROM BUSHLEY This month we move two miles upstream from Tewkesbury to Bushley, writes Jack B. Walker. This is a delightful old agricultural community in a quiet corner of rural Worcestershire. A walk around the village is pleasing in itself, for there are some truly fascinating cottages dating back centuries.

Of particular interest is the Elizabethan building opposite the church which formerly housed the local school. Farming and cider making were the traditional occupations in this truly peaceful spot, and Bushley is still very much a working village to this day. Our route begins at the Village Hall. Leave the car park and turn right, past the church, to

Keeping your pet calm when fireworks light up the skies in November Fireworks can make celebrations exciting for us, but they’re not always quite as much fun for our pets. There are things we can do to help keep them calmer and safer. It’s up to you as their owner to help them cope and make sure their fireworks nights are as easy as they can be. Does my pet need help coping with fireworks? Generally, most pets will struggle with fireworks. Animals have acute senses: for them every flash and bang can be unexpected and alarming. Think about how your pet reacts to fireworks; or if you haven’t had them when there’s been fireworks, how they react to loud noises. Do they show any of the following behaviours? Cats and Dogs ● Cowering or hiding behind the sofa ● Trying to run away or escape (this can include digging up the carpet) ● Soiling the house ● Restlessness, e.g. pacing and panting for dogs, and over grooming (cats) ● Barking incessantly (dogs only!) If they show any of these signs, your pet might need help coping

What can I do to help? Ideally, it’s best to prepare some time in advance. Speak to your vet at least six to twelve weeks in advance. Long term behavioural therapy really needs to be looked at six months in advance.

At the end of this field go through into another field (4) and head towards the house that stands beside Mythe Bridge. Passing the back of the house, pick up the Severn Way (5) to reach the river bank. Turn left and walk along the bank, keeping the Severn to your right at all times. On the eastern bank of the Severn, sand and gravel extraction took place for many years on this stretch between Tewkesbury and Upton. Nowadays pleasure craft have largely replaced the working barges and you are far more likely to encounter a fisherman than a quarry worker!

DISTANCE: approx 2.25 miles, mainly flat. CAR PARKING: in the small car park at Bushley village hall, next to the church. REFRESHMENTS: no shop or pub in Bushley. The nearest facilities are in Tewkesbury. FLOODING: check local weather forecasts before setting off. The walk should not be attempted when flood warnings are in place. Factory outlet scheme in Ashchurch gets go-ahead The Department for Communities and Local Government has confirmed that the Government has decided not to call in the application to build a factory outlet and garden centre in Ashchurch, and planning permission has now been granted by Tewkesbury Borough Council. Tewkesbury Borough Councillors voted overwhelmingly in favour of the outline planning application in March 2016. Because of the nature of the application, it was then referred to the Secretary of State. Simon Tothill, Property and Development Director of Robert Hitchins, said: “We are delighted with the decision and would like to thank Tewkesbury Borough Councillors for their backing. “We’re pleased to have worked with both officers and councillors in a positive way. “We are confident that this proposal will create huge benefits for Tewkesbury town and borough, bringing up to 1,000 jobs and providing a springboard for a strong and competitive economy.” The out-of-town retail outlet centre will offer clothing, sport and leisure goods alongside a garden centre on the south side of the A46

N A46 M5 Junction 9

The proposed Factory Outlet and Garden Centre at Ashchurch immediately adjacent to J9 of the M5. There will be a tourist information point at the outlet and a shuttle bus into Tewkesbury town centre which will link with Ashchurch railway station, providing an opportunity to promote the area as an all-yearround tourism and leisure destination. “The Ashchurch development will provide a leisure destination in its own right which will create undoubted spin-offs for Tewkesbury and the local economy,” said Mr

Tothill. “It will provide endof-lines and discounted goods with restaurants and a garden centre in a great location - one of the major junctions on the M5 - and is expected to attract visitors from Bristol, Cardiff and Birmingham as well as the Cotswolds.” The next step is to work up a detailed design for the scheme which will need to be agreed via a reserved matters planning application to Tewkesbury Borough Council, likely to be submitted in 2017.

3RD TEWKESBURY SCOUTS Last month 3rd Tewkesbury Scouts undertook a community project, helping Tewkesbury Nature Reserve. The Scouts volunteered to help with a little pruning. On the first Wednesday evening of autumn term, the Scouts met up and with the guidance of Larry Blacker, Manager of the Nature Reserve, cleared an entrance to the reserve of brambles and nettles. Despite the scrapes and scratches the Scouts thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and achieved their aimed goal in a small amount of time. Carenza, an Explorer Scout and Young Leader said, “Once the Scouts were told what to do they just got to it, it was great fun and we are helping out our local nature reserve”. The Scout Association is the UK’s largest mixed youth organisation. They provide fun, chal-

lenge and adventure to over 400,000 girls and boys across the U.K. They are looking for

After finding a plentiful supply of wooden pallets Robbie dismantled them and used the wooden slats to build an all weather corner seat, whilst his wife, Keri upholstered a set of cushions. Not content just to sit on his new seat, and fired up with an itchy hammering hand, Robbie set about making a “She Shed” for Keri

and their daughters . Built as a beach hut, Keri decorated it with seashells from holidays past and now their garden is a real treat and shows us all what can be achieved with some of the useful things we all throw away. Keri said “I think my husband has lost his former name as half a job Bob.”

CAN YOU HELP WITH THE MINK PROBLEM? Dear Tewkesbury Direct, I have noticed this year that there are very few ducklings on the river Avon and thought that this may be due to mink. Now to my dismay this appears to be the reason. While cruising on the Avon I came across a Mink swimming along the bank and I followed it from the Tewkesbury Sailing Club to the moorings at the Fleet. I did report it to the Avon Navigation Trust who informed me that they knew about Mink on the Avon but they did not know who to report it to. Surely there must be an organisation who can deal with the problem of Mink as they are exceptional hunters and can wipe out several species of native wildlife in a very short time. Our second feature is Charles Mellors former bed and household goods shop in Barton Street. Sadly this property didnt stand the test of time and was demolished to make way for the towns former police station.

Although properties today are built along clean lines and are geometrically true, there is an appeal to the eye of irregular and rambling buildings and this is where Tewkesbury finds its lasting appeal amongst its visitors.

The final comparison was a bit of a mystery at first as there is no address in the original ad, maybe this was intentional or an oversight, we wonder if the advertiser ,James Coleman, asked for a reduction on his advertising invoice.

The business we found was at 12 High Street and is currently occupied by Greggs the Bakery, the stone quoins, now painted white gave the location away. We are grateful to local historian, Derek Round for the loan of his invaluable vintage town guide.

SAVING TEWKESBURY’S PAST Between 1967 and 1972, the Abbey Lawn Trust restored the row of medieval buildings on Church Street for both heritage and commercial use. Photographs were taken during the restoration to record the process. An architect by the name of Jeremy Benson oversaw the restoration of

the buildings. Benson was noted for his work as a consultant architect

with the National Trust, along with his conservation works on historic

JUNIOR PRESENTATION EVENING AT TEWKESBURY CC Tewkesbury Cricket Club held its annual junior presentation evening in early September. The awards, which were presented by the Club’s President, Hilary Caudle, were given to the leading batsmen, bowler and most improved players in the Club’s various age group teams. A special award was given to Freya Clark (front row, second right) for being its first female player to represent a full junior County side. This season Freya has been a regular player in Gloucestershire’s unbeaten Under 11 girls’ team. The overall most improved junior player prize was won by Matt Alonso for some hard-hitting innings, including for the Club’s Under 16 Twenty20 side, the Tewkesbury Tornadoes. TWYNING VILLAGE FETE A beautiful summer's day, a pretty village green, Gloucestershire Morris Men dancing and a pint of ale. That is the recipe for the epitome of an English village fete.

These ingredients came together on Bank Holiday Monday for the annual TRAC (Twyning Recreation and Amenity Complex) fete. Hundreds of villagers and visitors

came to see performances by the dancers of Bredon School of Dance and the Gloucestershire Morris Men on the green, as well as children's races, tug-of-war

and egg-throwing competitions. The high attendance will provide much needed funds to support the charity that runs the sports facilities and play

area in the village, in fact a new swing has already been ordered. A great day was had by all, put it in your diaries for next year.

PEDAL TO PARIS 2016 Team Tewkesbury (Peter Godwin & Andrew (Mo) Morris) completed their cycle to Paris raising funds for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal on 4 September.

The first day was uneventful however a succession of punctures and difficulty following the National Cycle Route 4 on day 2 meant that the day was longer in the saddle than anticipated. The 1 September saw 350 cyclists set off from London for Calais. Despite the long day previous Team Tewkesbury

made good time to Dover and embarked on the ferry on time. Every day the Legion lays a wreath at the war memorial in the town where they stay overnight as the cycle takes them across the Somme battlefield towards Paris. Peter carried the Tewkesbury Branch Standard at all ceremonials.

The final day saw all 350 cyclists heading through Paris in a large peloton and culminated in a cycle up the Champs Elysee arriving at the Arc de Triomphe. Six days cycling, approximately 440 miles com-

A letter from Caroline Bennett Dear Tewkesbury Direct readers, my name is Caroline Bennett, and I am writing to you on behalf of Tewkesbury Young Farmers Club. We are a rural youth group within the Gloucestershire Federation of Young Farmers, with members ranging from 10-26 years of age, who enjoy a variety of activities from learning new skills, to a fun competition programme. As a small, but welcoming club we are always looking at ways we can encourage new members to enjoy and join Young Farmers. CREATING POSITIVE CHANGES Nobody said that life was going to be fair. If they did then they obviously had no idea what life was about, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. We can go through times when we know we are doing our very best in a particular situation yet we draw complaint and criticism as people seem to fail to see the positive steps that we have made. Know what I am talking about? Read this story and let me explain what I am on about:The High School had long been praised for its academic achievements. Teachers were of a high standard and the pupils were hard workers who did all that they could to succeed. Behaviour was of a high standard too. Let's take a look in the Mathematics class where the subject to be studied on this particular day is the 9 times table. The teacher began by putting an image on the screen of the nine times table for the children to copy down and then learn. Let's take a look at the table ourselves:-

There you are. I bet that brought back memories. Painful ones, possibly! The teacher looked at his pupils and he noticed that they were nudging each other and laughing. “What's so funny?” he asked. “You've done it wrong, sir,” the children shouted back, still laughing like drains. The first equation is wrong!” “I did that on purpose,” said the teacher. “I made the first equation wrong so that you can learn an important lesson in life. “As you get older you will find there are loads

of lessons to learn in life if you are to get along as well as possible. “What I am doing this morning is teaching you a lesson about how, on many occasions, the world can treat you. I am showing you how sometimes the way you are treated is simply not fair. “I wrote the right maths equation 11 times but you haven't made any mention of that. All you have done is laughed at me and criticised me because of the one maths equation that I did wrong!” Can you see what the teacher's lesson is? It is quite simple. The world will never appreciate the good you do a million times over

BUT it will be only to happy to criticise the one wrong thing that you do. Unfair, indeed, so, knowing this story, you can keep it in perspective and not be worn down by it. Sadly it's the way of the world. Can you change things? Yes! Be the person who praises the positive and doesn't just pick on the negatives to concentrate on! There are times when the negatives must be pointed out of course. The important think is to strike that healthy balance. Praise when appropriate and criticise when necessary to create positive changes. David Slater

Tips to help you protect yourself from ATM theft Over the last few weeks we have had several instances where thieves have stolen cash by a series of distraction techniques at cash machines, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. Some of the techniques are quite sophisticated and involve the placing of devices to retain your card or even cameras to record your PIN. I am not going into great technical detail of how these scams work but hopefully by being vigilant you will avoid becoming a victim. The golden rule is do not allow yourself to become distracted and never accept help from anyone however kind or well-meaning they appear to be. The perpetrators of these crimes also pick their victims and the elderly appear to be particularly vulnerable, only last week an elderly male in Tewkesbury had £200 stolen. Thankfully he was reimbursed by the bank on this occasion but this does not always happen. I have prepared some tips to follow when withdrawing cash at ATM’s.

Get in the habit of using the same ATM machine for your transactions. Become familiar with it and be able to recognize changes to the machine. Use ATM machines inside banks rather than on the street (where they’re easier for thieves to access). If you are visiting an unfamiliar ATM machine that is not inside a bank, examine it carefully for devices. Card or cash trapping devices need to

Instead call the bank from the ATM where your card was taken using a cell phone. Don’t use ATM machines with extra signage or warnings posted on the machine. if your bank has really contacted you via email, then close the email and directly type your bank’s website address into your browser. Visit your account and look for update notices directly on your account or bank’s website. The email is almost always a phishing scam. Thanks to Jill and Paul Wanklyn of White Tiger Taekwondo and Self Defence group, young people will now have a focused activity available to them in Tewkesbury on a Friday evening. Tewkesbury Borough Council has provided the funding to Jill and Paul to enable them to provide a combination of fitness training, martial arts and self defence classes based at the Wheatpieces Community Centre as part of a diversionary project. Paul who is a serving police officer comments “Our key aim is to encourage youngsters who feel socially isolated or those who engage in anti social behaviour to have an opportunity to develop their skills. “There will be opportunities to help them progress to initially becoming volunteers supporting the instructors and ultimately taking a lead role within the Friday night diversionary project.” Anyone over the age of 13 years interested in joining please email jilloconnor@hotmail.com or pop in to the Wheatpieces Community centre on a Friday from 7.30pm, and ask for Jill or Paul.
