The event was hosted by Tewkesbury Marina and took place after their annual ‘Drinks on the Lawn’ party. Head of Severn Unit MVS Nic Price said “Even though the town no longer holds a water festival, local boaters decided to continue holding a river parade each year.” This year the standard was very high and after a closely fought contest David Phillpots took first place after dressing his launch called the ‘4 J's’ in a topical Olympic theme. He narrowly beat last year's winner Tony Hill and his boat ‘Marsh Harrier’ into second place. The winner was presented with the challenge trophy and a cheque by Marina Manager Simon Amos. Severn Unit provided safety cover for the event and led the procession with their own boat MVS Pirata. Nic Price comment-

Tewkesbury’s illuminated boat parade ed: “Unit members lead a varied and interesting life and are always ready to lend a hand wherever needed. “Two of our members, Jane Thomas and David

Peet, were recently out on a Monday evening training exercise in the unit's inflatable, when they spotted a sheep swimming in the middle of the river.

“The animal was in a very distressed state, but with great difficulty they managed to tow the exhausted animal ashore. It was hauled out of the river onto the bank, which was a difficult operation as the sheep's fleece was waterlogged, making it very heavy.” New members are always welcome at the unit on Monday evenings. Meetings are held at Tewkesbury Day Centre in Station Road from 7.30pm.

MAYOR RECOGNISES BEAUTIFUL WORK It has become a Tewkesbury tradition that ever year the Mayor visits local businesses and judges which flower display deserves a special recognition. This is also an opportunity for the organisers of Tewkesbury in Bloom to thank everyone involved in making the town so beautiful and replete with so many wonderful flower displays. A presentation was held at the end of the summer to recognise those who had made major contributions to beautify the town. Ken Powell, the Town Mayor, told the assembled group how impressed he was by every entry into his competition. He explained how difficult it was to make the choice because he was faced with such a plethora of talent and beauty. The Chairman of Tewkesbury in Bloom, John Badham, told everyone that this year there were more baskets, tubs and coronets than ever before. He thanked the local businesses for their incredible support, not only in providing their own displays but also in sponsoring all the tubs,

Town Mayor’s Presentations (Photo: Nick Jones) baskets and coronets. Support from the town council was reduced this year and the Borough Grant withdrawn some time ago. Special tribute was paid to Margaret White, who was unable to attend due to illness, and Peter and Chris Aldridge – without all their efforts little would happen. Brian Williams of Cornerways Nursery was also thanked; Brian

LOCAL ARTISTS TO MOUNT EXHIBITION Roger Sibley, assisted by another local artist Liz Foxen, runs an art class for a small group of people who want to learn more about how to paint and draw. The group, which meets in members homes, started informally in Holy Trinity Church, Tewkesbury about four years ago, but has now broadened its scope. Two years ago the group staged a small exhibition in Tewkesbury Library, but this year they are planning a week long exhibition. This will be held in Holy Trinity Church itself from October 15th to 21st. Holy Trinity is a large space to fill, so other members of Holy Trinity, friends and members of the Bredon U3A Art group have all been invited to exhibit as well. Some exhibitors have turned their art work into cards which will be on sale, as will most of the paintings and photographs themselves. A proportion of the proceeds of sales will go

to mission projects supported by Holy Trinity. The exhibition is open Monday 15th to Saturday 20th October from 10am to 4.30 pm each day, and on Sunday before and after the 10am and 3pm services. Entry is free and tea and coffee are available.

FAIR BOOK LAUNCHED Fairground photographer Steve Perry from Ashchurch will be launching a new book ahead of this year’s Mop. On Sunday 7th October (11am-4pm) Steve will be signing copies of ‘Danter’s Travels’ at the Royal British Legion in Church Street, Tewkesbury. The book is an illustrated history of the famous family of showmen.

GIG FOR LEVANA’S TRUST A charity gig will take place at the Watson Hall next month in aid of the Levana Hanson Trust. Local girl Levana lost her legs to meningitis as a baby, and her trust raises money for both research into the condition and the children’s unit at John Radcliffe Hospital. Top of the bill at the Watson Hall on Sat 24th November are Wrathchild, supported by Ska’d, Binomial and others. The gig starts at 7pm. An indoor market will be held beforehand, 10am-2pm.

There was a good turn out for the local branches of Cats’ Protection’s homing day held recently at Folly Gardens Vets in Walton Cardiff. Eight kittens were found new homes after the event, but there are still plenty more adult cats looking for good homes. Tewkesbury branch has now joined forces with Gloucester and Cheltenham. in 1935, was used to take a personal message from the Queen to the Boys’ Brigade’s annual council meeting in London last month. The baton began its journey at Balmoral Castle in August and was passed between Boys Brigade Battalions in a variety of unusual ways. It travelled through Scotland and then on to Ireland before being flown to Newcastleupon-Tyne, where it started its long journey throughout England. The First Tewkesbury Company paddled the baton by bell boat from Croft Farm to land at Kings John's Bridge, then onwards to Tewkesbury Abbey. A relay run around the town brought it to its final stage in Tewkesbury, when it was transported by Ian Boskett's miniature steam railway to Brigade HQ. The epic journey then continued into Wales before reaching its final destination.

GARDENING with Ernest Bratt

FRUITFUL GARDENS October is the month when autumn produce abounds. Planting bare rooted stock is the most economical way to start your own orchard, writes Ernest Bratt. Begin by selecting the shape and size of tree which depends upon the rootstock. This can be a bit confusing so I will use apple trees as an example. 'Very Dwarf' (M27) grow to about 2m, 'Dwarf' (M9) to 2.5m, 'Semi Dwarf' (M26) to 3m, 'Semi Vigorous' (MM 106) to 3.5m, 'Vigorous' (MM111 & M25) to 4m. Then consider the forms of fruit trees. 'Espalier' are trained with a central trunk with horizontal branches anchored against a wire. 'Fan' have radiating branches and are usually grown against a wall. 'Cordon' are trained to lean to one side making these very economical on space. 'Step Over' are very low growing and are often used to provide a fruiting boundary. If you have the space, plant an ordinary tree which will need formative pruning in it early years to create a good shape for fruiting spurs.

8 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

Lastly, to ensure good pollination you need to select trees in the same flowering group (or very similar). For example, 'Grenadier' is group 3 as is 'Worcester Permain'. These cultivars are known as 'diploids' and having two sets of chromosomes only need one other cultivar as the pollinator. There is, however, one group known as 'triploids' eg Bramley Seedling (group 3) which requires two non triploid varieties to act

as pollination partners. Some apples are self fertile egJames Grieve which planted with a 'Bramley' and a 'Worcester' would pollinate well. Happy choosing - but one word of advice: find a local fruit nursery and seek advice from them before ordering. We have general information on garden design on our website at www.galanthusgardendesign.co.uk or tel 01452 536429. Ernest Bratt

Nick Jones (right) with the rest of the Jones team at The Photo Studio: Kieran Hunt, sister mum Joan, sister Karen and dad John all work in the business.

PHOTO STUDIO CELEBRATES 25 YEARS This month Tewkesbury’s popular photographic shop The Photo Studio marks a quarter century of successful trading on Saturday 20th October. The business was opened in 1987 by lighting expert Derek Harrison, who had been responsible for many of the early advertisements on the infant commercial station ITV. The Photo Studio’s current owner, Nick Jones, started working in the High Street shop as a Saturday boy when aged just seventeen. That was back in 1990, and nine years later he bought the company. Since then Nick has run the Photo Studio as a real family business, ably assisted by sister Karen, mum Joan and Dad John. There have been

many advances in camera technology over the past 25 years, but processing and printing continue to be a core part of the trade. Nick says there is still a great demand for this, with many professional photographers still using film. Printing archive and historic images from old negatives has also increased over the past few years. Nick is an accomplished photographer himself: weddings and portraiture (especially of children) form a large part of his portfolio. Passport photography is also available on site, together with a wide

range of associated services: albums, prints, cards, frames etc. Camera sales are on the up too - and Nick is always willing to give shoppers the benefit of his advice. “With Christmas just around the corner, it’s worth remembering that we can offer a range of really unique personalised items,” said Nick. “Your own photographs can be used to create thoughtful gifts such as calendars. We can even create key rings, picture mugs and lots of other super presents too.” For more details drop into the store at 22 High Street.

GOTHERINGTON REVEALED Gotherington Station, on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, is where the train traveller marvels at the restoration work that has turned the location into a unique time capsule.

The restored station building and platform

Owners Bryan and Savita have toiled hard for years to transform the spot into an authentic GWR railway station. And now their work has been recognised in a new book, part of a series called Railways and Recollections, published by Silverlink. Bryan wrote the book to explain the highs and lows of the restoration work, and the history that made the station what it is today. The book will be launched during a special open weekend at Gotherington station, on Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th November.

As parking is very limited at Gotherington, visitors are advised to catch the GWR train from either Cheltenham Race Course or Winchcombe stations The publishers will also have a stand at the GWR’s Winchcombe Station. At just £6 the book is a great buy - and may even inspire readers to build their own dream, just like Bryan.

NOTHING BEATS A GOOD OLD FETE Visitors were in for a sunny treat at the annual Southview farm fete at Tredington. Organisers had to postpone the event for a week due to the weather, but the sun came out at the family event which raises valuable funds for Cancer Research UK.

Kathy Stagg, on behalf of the friends of Southview farm, was delighted to announce that £1,333 had been raised for Cancer Research UK at the fete and there was still some money to be included in that figure. Kathy wants to pass on big thankyou’s to all those who helped in the success, and that if their efforts over the years help just one person with cancer then it has all been worth it.

OLYMPIC HERO LAUNCHES SCHOOL ROWING CLUB Thanks to donations from private sponsors including Costain PLC, as well as a lottery grant, Tewkesbury School Rowing club has been able to buy three racing fours and take to the water. One of the boats has been named after local rowing hero and

double olympic medallist Zac Purchase, MBE, who was in town last month for the club’s launch. Severn Vale housing have also recently pledged their support to the rowing club’s project, and the club has been awarded Olympic legacy funding from Gloucester-

shire NHS and Active Gloucestershire. The launch of the new club will give the young people of Tewkesbury the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of their local Olympian, using both the rivers Avon and Severn.

TEWKESBURY PROMOTED AT WESTMINSTER Local MP Laurence Robertson organised a lunchtime reception at the House of Commons last month, to promote Tewkesbury and all it has to offer, writes Shelby Powell. Among the invited guests were Helena Hague of Kalliste and Amanda Orton of Pretty Special, who made sure Tewkesbury Direct didn’t miss the party by taking a copy along.

‘Tewkesbury - Open for Business’ was held on the Thames-side terrace and provided networking opportunities to market the town as a business, residential and leisure destination.

PHARMACY MATTERS with Peter Badham

OCTOBER, STOPTOBER This October marks the Stoptober campaign, writes Peter Badham. The Department of Health is asking the eight million smokers to quit for one month in October. Evidence confirms that if you quit for 28 days , you are five times more likely to quit completely. If a person smokes 20 cigarettes a day , they could save £200 over the 28 day quit period Community pharmacies have trained advisers who can offer a

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

A STROLL ALONG THE SEVERN Bushley is a delightful old agricultural community in a quiet corner of rural Worcestershire just two miles north of Tewkesbury. A walk around the village is pleasing in itself, for there are some truly fascinating cottages dating back centuries. Of particular interest is the Elizabethan building opposite the church which formerly housed the local school. Farming and cider making were the traditional occupations in

this truly peaceful spot, and Bushley is still very much a working village to this day. Our route begins at the Village Hall. Leave the car park and turn right, past the church, and along the main street. As you reach the edge of the village look out for some barn conversions on your left. At

Hither Ham House go over the stile by the brick built gate post and past some tennis courts to a five bar gate. Go through, and bear right to cross a stile (1). Walk down the slope, following the direction of the yellow marker arrows, to another stile and over a stream (2). Go diagonally right across the field to the far corner (3) and into the next field keeping the boundary to your right. At the end of this field go through into another field (4) and head towards the house that stands beside Mythe Bridge. Passing the back of the house, pick up the Severn Way (5) to reach the river bank. Turn left and walk along the bank, keeping the Severn to your right at all times. On the eastern bank of the Severn, sand and gravel extraction took place for many years on this stretch between Tewkesbury and Upton.

Nowadays pleasure craft have largely replaced the working barges and you are more likely to encounter a fisherman than a quarry worker.

Wind Pump The wind pump the towpath passes was used for raising water to the meadows between here and Bushley. After three quarters of a mile, look for the stile on the right (6). Cross this and, keeping the hedge to your left, head over the field and through a farm gate onto a lane. (7) Walk ahead up this lane, passing a farm, to reach the village street by the church.

One should never trust a façade in history – least of all what seems a Tudor style building. Lloyds Bank (C) 1819 High Street is often admired as a historic building. Historical photographs are valuable, because of not only the subject, but often more because of the background they reveal. The grainy photographs above, from the Cheltenham Graphic, record two scenes of the Boer War the Declaration in 1899 (A) and celebrations for its ending in 1902(B). The Town Hall is the subject - but study the building to the right of the Town Hall – and compare it with photograph C. Architectural

Photo C

Historian David Verey notes that he bank “has suffered the indignity of being covered with floorboards”. This restoration dates from 1921 (D) when Lloyds closed their other branches and made it the Tewkesbury H.Q.. The 1902 photo shows more detail of the building, possibly erected c1860. Lloyds expanded by taking over a lower house at no 20. By 1938 the Manager’s residential upper floor had been Photo grandiosely named ‘The Gables’. This was per-

haps the last “Tudor” restoration, started by Thomas Collins at the Cross before 1900. Nevertheless, I think that we would all agree that the High Street is improved by Lloyds’ conversion. John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society

For the fourth year running Tewkesbury’s floral displays have hit the gold standard in the annual Britain in Bloom competition. The committee had hoped to get best in category, but were pipped at the post by Ledbury. John Badham, chairman of Tewkesbury in Bloom, said: “This is a remarkable achievement for three reasons. “Firstly, there is a small and dwindling group of predominately elderly volunteers. This makes the achievement of people like Margaret White, Brian Reeve, Brian Williams and Peter and Chris Aldridge especially outstanding. “Secondly, we get less and less help from local authorities, and thirdly we are in difficult economic times. The support we get from local business is extraordinary. “We are increasingly dependent on this and are enormously grateful. The long term future of Tewkesbury in Bloom does require more volunteers, especially young ones, and we do hope people will step forward to help.”

LEGAL MATTERS with Thomson & Bancks

RESOLVING FAMILY ISSUES Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has come of age and is no longer alternative, so its now called Dispute Resolution (DR). This is something more and more couples are preferring to use to resolve their family issues. There is now a greater understanding of the available methods of DR, Collaboration, Mediation and Arbitration, and a greater realisation that allowing the courts to adjudicate does not provide any certainty of outcome and adds considerably to the stress. With the virtual demise of family legal aid next year couples getting together with their solicitors will become commonplace, relying on the courts being an expensive rarity. To celebrate its coming of age a national Dispute Resolution awareness week (24th to 28th September) was launched by Resolution (formerly known as the Solicitors Family Law Association) to promote the benefits of Dispute

GRAMMAR SCHOOL REMEMBERED A plaque has been unveiled to mark the historic site of Tewkesbury’s former Grammar School, opposite the abbey. Founded in 1576, the school moved to purpose-built premises opposite the Abbey in 1906. The two storey red-brick building housed fifty pupils, but by 1952 numbers had grown to over 150 and the school relocated to Southwick Park. It remained there until its closure in 1972. Representatives from the Old Theocsbrian Society (former Grammar School pupils), the present Tewkesbury School and Tewkesbury Civic Society attended the unveiling ceremony last month.

SPORTS CENTRE’S OPEN DAY SUCCESS Tewkesbury School Sports Centre held its annual Open Day on last month. The day kicked off with a football tournament on the All Weather Pitch successfully run by partner club Tewkesbury Town Colts FC. Tournament winners were Alcester U12’s and Lenches Panthers U13’s. There were also drill sessions for ages 8 and under. Other activities included Badminton, Table Tennis, Tennis and Basketball, Snorkelling with Dive 90 and canoeing with Cheltenham Canoe Club in the pool. Centre Manager Paul Baker said “It was a fantastic day for the community to see the range of activities on offer here at Tewkesbury School Sports Centre. “With a wide range of groups using the facilities based at Tewkesbury School, there should be something for everyone, young or old and with over 400 people coming to the open day, it was a great success!” Gravity Fitness raised over £150 for Macmillan cancer support by having an Aerobathon, whilst also showing off

the wide variety of fitness classes they have to offer in the dance studio whilst the fitness studio was also available to new comers! Clive Harrison and Tewkesbury Shotokan Karate Academy did some mesmerising and action-packed martial arts displays and new comers were encouraged to give it a go. The Bouncy Castle was available for the younger children: this equipment is available to hire for birthday parties during the school holidays and over the weekend for only £35 per hour. Paul added “with the October half term looming, the sports centre team are gearing up for a busy time with the Multi Sports Courses and Football Camps that run throughout the school holidays. Having just got over the summer holidays where we catered for over 250 children enjoying a vast array of different sports we have just enough time to recuperate before the October half term holiday!”

The Pirettes of the Caribbean

SET SAIL FOR THE WATSON HALL Avast and belay there, all ye landlubbers! Prepare to set sail and join the dastardly pirate crew of the ‘Saucy Serpent’ for fun, laughter and adventure on the high seas. This half term Tewkesbury’s Manor Players ask you to join them for a tale of skullduggery and mayhem as the present their autumn production ‘The Pirettes of the Caribbean. No, that’s not a misspelling. This is a tale of women pirates who were as much, or maybe even more of a scourge of the oceans than the men. This is a rip-roaring evening of fun and frolics for the whole family. The panto-style play has been written by Manor Players member Ian Leaver, with the assistance of colleague Richard Ford. All of the songs and music are totally original too, and have been composed by Paul Harding. The story traces the attempts of Belle Sparrow (Jack’s sister) and her attempts to flee the grasp of the evil Lord Reciful as they both race to find the treasure hidden by ghostly Davey Jones in his famous treasure locker. The play takes place at the George Watson Memorial Hall in Tewkesbury Thurs 25th-Saturday 27th October, with two performances on Saturday. Tickets are £8 adults, £6 children from the Orange Pig. Goody bags await audience members in pirate costume with fun for kids too.

OF BAKING BATS AND BUILDING Tewkesbury’s John Moore Museum brings more Tudor history to life this month, with a special event on Sat 20th October. In morning and afternoon sessions, visitors will be able to discover secrets of the 15th century building trade, as well as taking a costumed tour with the tudor merchant’s wife and cooking up something special. On Saturday 27th October renowned bat expert David Endacott will be at the museum in Church Street with a selection of live, rescued British Bats to explain all about these fascinating creatures of the night. THE WHEATPIECES PULL OFF ANOTHER GREAT FAMILY EVENT The sun appeared just in time for the annual Wheatpieces Fun Day organised by the Parish Council. Flocks of families came to try out the free activities from circus skills and face painting to Zumba with Sue and Kirsty. A traditional Punch and Judy show entertained the smallest members of the family while parents enjoyed browsing outside stalls.

Tewkesbury Boys Brigade provided a tasty BBQ and there was tea, delicious cup cakes and ice cream to wash it all down. The dog show and cat re-homing scheme organised by the local Cats Protection League also proved popular draws.

WETTEST SUMMER ON RECORD, GREATEST SUMMER FOR BRITAIN Ok we may have been sick and tired of the weather, which caused so many cancellations of so many events, but in other respects, Britain did spectacularly well! The doubters said we’d never do it, we’d never finish the stadium on time, the costs would spiral out of control, there would be traffic chaos, commerce would be severely interrupted and what on earth were the organisers thinking of, when they wanted to stage the Olympic Games of all things in one of the busiest cities in the world. The message from the gloom-mungers was - ‘Stay away from London!’ – So we didn’t; we ignored all that, when we finally got tickets and went – into the chaos? What chaos? We wafted into North London without a hitch, parked – no problem and headed for the tube. Pleasant staff greeted us, trains were frequent and clean – and when we got to our stop, clear signs directed us to the venue. This was the

same all over town. Everyone has talked about the ‘feel good’ factor; well it was there in abundance! I never saw one unhappy face, people had time to talk and share, the 77,000 Locog volunteers all deserved a medal of their own, with their quietly secure and caring support. And London Transport – what about them? Fantastic!....is all I can say. Their organisation and efficiency was second to none. The staff were always on the case, helpful, polite and informative; in other words – Brilliant! We were never held up; it all ran like clockwork. Strangers talked to one another, multi-culturalism proved that it can work and the Union flag became popular again. The legacy – and I hope there is one, is that this ‘niceness’, this ‘patience and understanding’, will stick – and wow, do we ever need it! I met many nationalities, who all said: ‘The best games ever’! Even the organisers of the 2000 Sydney

Olympics, who thought that we’d never top their efforts graciously admitted that Team GB had stunned the world with the opening an closing ceremonies. Leaving alone our biggest medal haul ever, we then go and lift the bar still further with what was without doubt, the biggest, most popular and most rewarding Paralympics of all time. So let’s see; we cleaned up in the Tour de France, with a one/two – never before in history. We showed the world how it was done in the velodrome, pulled a load out of the bag in the rowing at Eton Dorney, pushed our gymnasts beyond their wildest dreams, cleaned up spectacularly on ‘Super Saturday’ in the main athletics arena and even found some surprises in the Long jump and boxing. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, Andy Murray finally hit the jackpot on Centre Court – and then went on to grab his first Grand Slam. The list just goes on and on.

And the Paralympics? Well we found some new and very determined stars there too. We found out just how competitive these disabled people were – and they too added a terrific medal haul to our overwhelming table of success. Just look at little Ellie Simmons – can that girl swim! So where are we now? The whingers complain about the cost - £9bn, but let’s just put that into perspective: Yes, it’s a lot of money, but Beijing spent more than 4 times that and when you compare it to our own government’s spending this year, which so far adds up to £638bn – that’s ‘a cool £13bn a week’, there are far less memorable ways of using taxpayers money. I quite like this country after all! Bad summer? Pretty good one if you ask me!

HOP POLE’S HERITAGE REVEALED One of Tewkesbury’s most historic inns, The Royal Hop Pole, opened up the doors to reveal some of its best kept secrets as part of the ‘Discover Tewkesbury’ event last month. The hotel, immortalised after it was used as a setting by Charles Dickens in The Pickwick Papers, was re-opened by JD Wetherspoon in 2008 after a £4.5 million refurbishment.

The Cherub Panel

The Medieval Banqueting Hall

During the renovation work many aspects of the buildings’ fascinating history were revealed, and the pub chain took great care to ensure that everything was preserved for posterity. The oldest part of the building is the medieval hall, which dates back to the 15th century. This was uncovered during the refurbishment, along with four areas of original painted decoration, which have been conserved. For the Discover Tewkesbury event, Matt Janes of Wetherspoon’s gave visitors a tour of the areas not normally seen by the public including the medieval banqueting hall and the painted panels which are located in and around the hotel’s bedrooms. Experts believe there may be many more 15th and 16th century artworks as yet uncovered, but not every historic feature is hidden from public view.

The Great Fire Place Last year JD Wetherspoon spent a further £4000 to get the Great Fireplace working again. This is believed to have been used as a hiding place for a priest and children during the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471 - and is the focal point for one of the ancient hostelry’s ghost stories. Tewkesbury has over 350 listed buildings: the Royal Hop Pole is certainly one of its best

Report from the organisers The event went well and weather was great! Due to circumstances beyond our control we had to cancel the live music 5 days before. This was due to licencing requirements and this did affect the number of visitors to the show. Despite this, everyone who visited the show had lots to do and see from the fair rides, to the games, face painting, craft stalls, Amy Bastin dance group, and Montys allsorts dog agility demonstrations and the working field demonstrating traditional farming practices, sheep and vintage vehicles also. DOUBLE TROUBLE One Sunday night at the beginning of August, we received a call from a member of the public who, in desperation, had rung us about an otter cub that had been found by the roadside in Newport, South Wales, writes Caroline Gould. Having made about fifteen telephone calls to various people, but nobody seemed willing or able to help, she finally found our number, by which time the cub was quite distressed, very vocal and obviously hungry. We gave as much advice as we could and also some more numbers to try and asked her to get back in touch with us if she had no luck finding somewhere for the cub. The next day we had a call from a small rescue centre near Cardiff to let us know that the otter cub had been taken there. As it happened, we had arranged for one of our staff to take a gannet down to the RSPCA wildlife hospital in Somerset that day, so we were able to arrange to meet someone from the Cardiff rescue by the Severn Bridge to pass the cub on to us. She weighed under 700gms when she arrived with us and we were bottle feeding her with a milk replacer but she very soon started to gain weight and strength, and eventually started to eat some solid food for herself (fresh trout – nothing but the

best!!) At this point we knew that we had to find somewhere with otter cubs of a similar age for her to interact with to avoid her becoming imprinted (dependent on humans and therefore not releasable). We contacted all the centres in the UK that we knew dealt with otters but nowhere had cubs as young as her. By chance a comment from some-

one on Facebook pointed us to a newspaper article about a cub at a centre up north. We got in touch and found out that they too had been looking for another cub to be put with theirs. This good news meant that we now had a three and a half hour journey to meet at services on the M6 to hand our cub over. Unbelievably, when

we were three hours into our journey, a call came Vale Wildlife centre to let us know that Mike, one of our Care Assistants, had just gone on a callout to, yes you guessed it, another otter cub!! The chances of that happening were very remote – we could have made a fortune if we’d put a bet on another otter cub coming in, especially at this that time of year as most cubs are born in the winter months. So, we ended up having to make the same journey all over again some twelve days later once the new cub had received treatment and been stabilised. At least we know that three otter cubs will be released back into the wild in just over twelvemonths time. For more news and stories, visit our website www.valewildlife.org.uk Caroline Gould

the Free Spirit band. Tickets cost £12.50 to include a buffet supper. Contact Geraldine on 07917 878979 or Amanda on 01684 273324 for tickets or further details.

Check wiper blade condition. Pull your wiper blades away from the windscreen during winter months to prevent ice build up on the rubber, and to prevent them from sticking to the glass. Fill your windscreencleaner tank with a winter-rated fluid, so that it can handle the colder temperatures. When wiping salt, snow and grime from your windscreen, this solution will ensure that the blades won't freeze Check coolants and oil levels and make sure your anti-freeze is up to spec. Check tyre pressures and tread, including spare. Worn tyres are not only illegal, but lack of grip on slippery roads can be lethal. Check battery condition and levels, heater functionality and lights - especially if fog lamps are fitted. Ensure all hinges are greased to prevent doors from sticking. Check windscreen for chips and cracks that could result in shattering in extreme temperatures. Of course, there is no substitute for an expert opinion for complete peace of mind. Ali is always willing to give the benefits of his advice. Please call AGP Autoservice on 07583 181288 with any queries.

No other stone resembles October’s birthstone Opal. Some opals are milky, with delicate flecks of colour; others have more “fire” and colour interplay. 97% of the world’s opals come from Australia, the “opal capital” being the town of Coober Pedy in the south. Early opal miners actually lived in the mine shafts to protect themselves from the blazing sun, leading to

an underground expansion of the town. Coober Pedy is therefore just as famous for its opal mines-turned-accommo-

It’s when you’re having a clear out isn’t it, that you find an item of clothing that really is past it’s “best before” date (unless it’s a classic Chanel handbag or suchlike) but it brings back such good memories that you can’t bear to part with it. In the 1829 novel “Anne of Geierstein” by Sir Walter Scott, the fortunes of the heroine are reflected by an opal; consequently impressionable readers believed that opals brought back luck. POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater David Slater, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Smoking Cessation Specialist shares with you an imaginary letter that a smoker writes to Nick O'Teen, the cigarette demon, as he decides to kick the habit for good Dear Nick O’Teen Just to let you know I am breaking with you for good. It’s taken my a long time and thousands of pounds to see how much damage you have done to me over the years. I thought you were my friend BUT I have seen sense at last and am telling you now that I never want to see or have anything to do with you again. I am going to repair the damage that you have done to me WHILE I still have time You make me smell. You make my house and my clothes smell. You are forever causing damage – holes in my clothes and burns on my floor. You follow me everywhere I go, which means I can’t spend quality time just with my family

and other friends who don’t like you. You make me feel small, insecure and a fool. You cost me so much money it’s unbelievable – you never pay your way! It costs me about £7 and more a day just to be your friend! You make my chest wheeze and my teeth rot. You make the gym difficult and stairs hard to climb. You will give cancer or emphysema or heart disease or stroke or heart attack one day I can’t buy nice things because you take all my money.

You make me feel ashamed and make me lie to my friends and family. You take away my self respect. You make me feel ter-

rible and lonely. You make me go outside at lunchtime in the cold and wet. I know it wont be easy to begin with, being without you, but that’s the way it is. You are not welcome in my life ever again so don’t try creeping back as I know you have done in the past. Nick, I am going to be a NON SMOKER. Pedal Steel guitarist Maurice Hipkiss would like more people to be introduced to his instrument, especially the younger generation. The Pedal Steel guitar is two or sometimes one, necks of an electric guitar, put onto a stand and played using a metal slide. It also features the ‘pedals’ and ‘knee levers’ which are used to alter the pitch of the sound being made by the instrument- a sound strongly related to country music. Maurice Hipkiss, a Cheltenham based Pedal Steel guitarist, has been playing the instrument for most of his life. Maurice has played all over the world, covering most of Europe. In the late 70s he played at Wembley stadium- he has also played at the London Palladium with Glen Campbell.

Rob Wakerley Maurice would like to see the younger generation getting more involved with the Pedal Steel guitar; he says that although a challenging instrument to learn, it’s a very rewarding one too. He feels people need a visual exposure to the Pedal Steel guitar to understand what it’s really like; not just an aural one. It’s definitely time for the young generation to get pedalling! Tewkesbury Cricket Club retained the Hospital Cup, a long standing local Twenty 20 competition, with a 55 run victory over Hatherley & Reddings. Batting first, Tewkesbury amassed 158-5 in their twenty overs, much of which was due to brutal hitting from man of the match Simon Holmes at the end of the innings.
