RIDING SCHOOL STARS ON TV AS SANTA STOPS BY Christmas came early to Twyning, when Santa Claus dropped by last month to launch a television programme’s charity competition. Tewkesbury Riding School’s owners Keith Hill and Jo Bowen were contacted by the producers of Daybreak last month, who wanted a perfect festive location to broadcast the start of their competition. Gloucestershirebased Snowbusiness, which creates winter scenes for movies and TV series, recommended the Twyning location to ITV.

Anna Wilkinson The producers’ hired one of the log cabins at the school’s Church Lane location, and Santa himself dropped by to invite children to design a Christmas Card. Some of the school’s young riders attended, and were shown sketch-

ing their designs live on TV. The children included Meg Keightley, Joeleigh Oliver-Farmer, Ellie-May Watts, Mor-gan Oliver, Daisy Reed and Liam Smith. Hattie Keightley, Jayden and Josh Hill also deputised as elves in the improvised Santa’s grotto. Riding school owner Jo Bowen said “The programme went out live with presenter Anna Williamson, and was shown all week on TV. “It was such good fun and it was lovely to see the children having the opportunity to take part. “Now we also have a Superstar Shetland pony too, who played the part of Prancer.” Young viewers were invited to send their drawings into Daybreak, with the winning design being printed and sold to raise money for charity.

Double olympic medallist Zac Purchase MBE returned to Tewkesbury last month to launch the school’s new Rowing Club. Zac, who grew up in Bushley, was present at the ceremony, which also saw a new rowing boat named in his honour. Gary Watson, Head teacher of Tewkesbury School, governors and the Borough Mayor, Philip Surman, also attended - along with students representing the school. The club, which began training sessions in the summer, is based on the River Severn near Mythe Bridge. As a result of a lottery grant and generous donations from private sponsors including Costain PLC, the club were able to buy three racing fours. Severn Vale Housing has also recently pledged their support to the project, and the club has been awarded Olympic Legacy funding from Gloucestershire NHS and Active Gloucestershire. Tewkesbury Borough council have been supportive with funding advice and club transport.

Tewkesbury School students proved they really did have style as well when they stormed to a win at a Fashion Education Day last month. The event was judged by industry specialists, as well as George Davis who designs for Per Una and George at Asda. Garments that the pupils designed were worn by professional models, and the show wowed the audience at Gloucestershire College. The work submitted was from students in years ten and eleven, which showcasing the young talent that Tewkesbury School has on offer. Stand-out star was Megan Thomas (year eleven) whose garment was selected as the winner. Megan was offered a dazzling prize which included £1,000, and a day in George Davis’s design studios in London, where she will have £100 to spend on anything that she likes. The chic event allowed Mr Davis to spend time talking with the students about their future in fashion and the industry as a whole. The world the students created has been showcased to many important people in the industry, and the school will be looking forward to many more successes in the future. Congratulations to all students involved, who did a fantastic job!

MORE HELP FOR HEROES FROM KUDOS A great night was had by all who attended a charity night at the Kudos Dress Agency in Tewkesbury High Street last month. Ladies who attended enjoyed lots of fizz, tasty chocolates and some delicious cakes baked by Kate Robertson. The raffle, bake sale and generous donations raised a total of £187.44 for Help for Heroes.. The organisers would like to thank all our guests on the evening for their support and to all the local business’ who donated some wonderful raffle prizes. Without their support there would not have been such a successful outcome. Best wishes were also extended to Kate for her charity Everest climb in 2013.

The Arrivall project took a another step forward recently, when a Tewkesbury-based company undertook the manufacture of the aluminium alloy pennants which will form part of the five metre high oak-framed sculptures. This work, essential to the design of the sculptures, represents a major donation in kind, saving many weeks, if not months of fundraising and emphasises the support the project has from local businesses. Kenard Engineering converted the designs for the pennants, prepared by Diane Gorvin from the 32 designs created by the pupils of Tirlebrook School. They were turned into CAD drawings before cutting them on their Flow Mach 3 machine, using a jet of water mixed with a grinding dye travelling at 2000 miles per hour. This intricate and highly technical work contrasts with the wood construction being carried out by sculptor Phil Bews. Phil uses only his artist’s eye and a chainsaw, and reflects the broad range of talents of local craftsmen being brought to bear on this unique project. The sculpture, repre-

Pennants in production senting the victory and defeat, and commemorating the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury, will be erected at Stonehill roundabout, on the southern edge of the original battlefield. Garry Dring, Operations Manager at Kenard Engineering, said: “It is a great pleasure to help out the Battlefield Society in their endeavour to put this sculpture in Tewkesbury. We’re only too pleased to help and do what we can, and it gives our guys the opportunity to display their work in public” Clive Montellier,

Secretary of the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society, said: “The offer from Kenard Engineering to make the pennants for the sculptures has given the project a huge boost, both in terms of the value of their work and in allowing us to showcase the expertise of our local craftsmen combined with the talents of our Tewkesbury schoolchildren. “We can’t wait to see the pennants flying high over the sculptures on the roundabout’ For further information go to the website www.tewkesbury.org.uk or call 01684 294939.

TEWKESBURY COUPLE CELEBRATE DIAMOND WEDDING Tewkesbury couple Cecil and Vivienne Hallett celebrated sixty years of marriage last month, with a special diamond wedding anniversary meal at the Hunters Inn, Longdon. The couple married in Bath on 27th October 1952, when Cecil was doing his National Service in the RAF and Vivienne was working as a tracer with the Admiralty in Bath. Cecil was born in Rhyme Intrinseca in Dorset and Vivienne in Twerton, Bath. Unlike generations before him who worked as shepherds, Cecil had an opportunity to work in the Midland Bank and joined the Trowbridge Branch in 1950. Progressing through appointments at We s t o n - s u p e r- M a r e , Kingswood and Cinderford, he moved to Tewkesbury in December 1965, being appointed second officer at the Tewkesbury Branch. The couple set up home in Newtown, and have lived their ever since. Vivienne retired from the Admiralty when they had children, subsequently working at Chance Street Primary School and in local High Street Shops. Their two married sons, Graham (who runs an architectural practice in Tewkesbury) and Garry, each had two children - so Cecil and Vivienne have three granddaughters and one grandson. Cecil was promoted to Manager of the Midland Bank in Tewkesbury, from where he retired in

Cecil and Vivienne on their wedding day, 1952. 1991. He then spent seven years helping with accountancy at Beckford Silk.

Cecil and Vivienne have been very active in the town for many years. Cecil has been treasurer for both the former Northway Youth Club and Old People’s Welfare, and was a governor at Tirlebrook School when it first opened. Still much involved in local organisations, Cecil frequently organises walks in the area and Vivienne enjoys being part of the art group, both with U3A. They have also been long standing active members of Tewkesbury Methodist Church, Vivienne being one of the stewards.

2012 One of Cecil’s passions was sailing, building his own Mirror dingy in the garage, which he sailed on the Avon. Later he built a larger Mirror 16 yacht, again in the garage, before progressing to a two berth sailing yacht, based in Poole Harbour.

GARDENING with Ernest Bratt

PLANNING AHEAD IN THE GARDEN

With the hour put back and the evenings drawing in this might not appear to be the season to look ahead. However, this is the time to reflect on the successes and failures in our gardens with a view to developing a plan of campaign for next year, writes Ernest Bratt. Firstly make a note of the plants and features in your gardens that have given you pleasure. Might it be possible to repeat a particular plant elsewhere in the garden. Then list those plants which have not performed. Are they tired out, overgrown, diseased and candidates for removal? Which features in the garden don't look right? COMMUNITY CENTRE GROUPS SHINE Tewkesbury based groups who meet at the Wheatpieces Community Centre have recently shared in a run of successes, writes Shelby Powell. Five members of White Tiger Taekwondo club brought back no less than eight trophies in a national competition. Both children and adults were put through their paces and faced stiff opposition in sparring and individual patterns categories. The youngest member, Ruby Keen, who attends Tirlebrook school is just 6 years old. The Club is also due to be featured in a national martial arts magazine. Meanwhile four dogs and their handlers who attend dog obedience classes at the centre, run by Rachel Butler of The Happy Dog Company, passed their Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme (Gold) Award. This is a relatively new scheme with only a limit-

Hound), Tamie Carr and Molly (Boxer) and Keith Bishop and Brian (chocolate Labrador). Rachel says “This is quite a prestigious achievement and only comes as a result of a lot of hard work from dogs and owners. We're as busy as ever and are almost at a fantastic 500 dogs to have been trained at the Community Centre since August 2009!

FIRE AND WATER DO MIX There's a new farmshop in Mitton, popular with the ladies because of their wide range of goods.

Always a treat for local children, is the Tewkesbury Fire and Severn Area Rescue Station Open Day. Friendly crews ensured an interesting visit allowing close inspection of the emergency equipment as well as giving practical information and advice on emergencies and how to avoid them. The Conservative candidate for the forthcoming Police Commisioner elections, Victoria Atkins popped in with a few colleagues for a chat and to see the good work being done.

MORE TOWN SECRETS UNCOVERED Licensee of the Berkeley Arms in Church Street, Laurence Mills, has drawn our attention to the structure that forms the rear part of the pub. A 15th Century barn made up of old ships timbers and a one up, one down residence are the relics of what were once farm buildings. The land to the rear of the pub was once pasture, and home to the cattle and sheep. Today the area has been built up and is now occupied by Priestly Court. We are told that the small one up, one down residence was home to the herdsman/slaughter man and the barn provided shelter for animals and feed. Local lady Carol Harris, who remembers the pub in the 1980’s, said the barn was a restaurant and today it is used by the Medieval Society for meetings. Drapes form a canopy over the seating area and it is Laurence's intention is to install a large woodburning stove to provide radiant heating and open it again to diners as a venue with a difference.

The Severn Area Rescue Association has announced the completion of ‘Project Landy’, an appeal to fund a second specialist vehicle for the organisation’s Gloucestershire Water Rescue Station in Tewkesbury. The appeal began in December 2011 with a target of £20,000. This was raised within six months and enabled the project to complete last month. The launch of ‘SARA Mobile 11’ Land Rover took place at the station open day last month, in the presence of Borough Mayor Philip Surman. The core vehicle was acquired from a sister Mountain Rescue Team, Calder Valley Search and Rescue (CVSR) and converted for SARA’s use by Liveridge 4x4. Project leader and Station Manager, Tom Keeling, said: “We are humbled by the support we have been shown both locally and on a wider scale. “While the majority of the funding came from Tewkesbury Borough Council, we are equally grateful to the various

Parish Councils, local residents and charitable trusts who donated.” The vehicle has been put to immediate use and has already assisted the police with searches in as well as providing regular transport for crew during training.

PHARMACY MATTERS with Peter Badham

FLU VACCINATIONS THIS WINTERTIME With the winter well on its the way , now is the time to think about a flu vaccine. Flu is spread by contaminated droplets in the air from an infected patients who has coughed or sneezed. The symptoms are usually very fast, and can include a temperature above 38 degrees C, a dry chesty cough, headaches, chills, sore throat and loss of appetite. Whilst older people are more at risk, and ought to have a vaccine; many patients choose to have the treatment to ensure they keep well over the winter. Every year the strain of vaccine changes following a World Health Organisation study. This year the vaccine has three strains, HINI, H3N2 and B/Wisconsin/1. The reason the make up of the vaccine changes is because the

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

ON COMMON GROUND In the mid eighteenth Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown set about transforming the countryside around Croome Court, to create one of England’s most celebrated parks. This was Brown’s first ever landscape design, commissioned by the Earl of Coventry - but for many years the whole estate was in a state of decline. The house was used as variously as a school and Hare Krishna centre, and has only recently come into the stewardship of the National Trust, which had acquired the parkland in 1996. In just over sixteen years, the Trust has brought Brown’s magnificent vision of bucolic England back to life. While our ‘there and back’ route crosses National Trust land it is via public footpaths and no fee is payable. Park, with care, at the roadside near the impressive arched gateway at Croome Court. (National Trust members may use the car park, but check winter opening hours). Look for a five bar gate on the left, and go over the adjacent stile into a thicket. (1). Follow a concrete pathway which leads across some rough ground and eventually out into the wider parkland. To your right you can see the Rotunda, one of many fascinating little buildings which adorn Croome Park. (2). Keep straight ahead

Cross this and head towards a metal gate and into a meadow (5). Here the path descends and bears slightly left, down to a road. Turn right, (6) and walk on to Dunstall Common, carrying on until you reach what looks like a ruined

Dunstall Castle The structure was designed by Robert Adam in 1766 as ‘whimsical folly’ with elements of both a castle and a church. Ironically, the folly was in real danger of collapse until being restored by the National Trust in 2010 and is now open at certain times of the year. Retrace your steps across the common and park, back to the car.

LEGAL MATTERS with Thomson & Bancks

ANNUAL LEAVE AND SICKNESS ABSENCE The Working Time Regulations 1998 implement a European Working Time Directive which confers a right on workers to take paid annual leave, writes David Bloxham. There is no continuous service requirement to qualify for paid annual leave. Entitlements are based upon the concept of “leave year”. A number of recent cases have addressed the issue of the interaction of annual

leave entitlement and absence. In particular what happens if a worker is unable to take their leave due to absence through illness? The answer to the question is not straightforward but a Court of Appeal decision in the

case of NHS Leeds –vLarner has added some clarity to the extent that it is now clear that where a worker has been unable to take annual leave due to sickness absence, the four weeks mandatory annual leave entitlement set out in the European Working Time Directive can be carried forward into the next leave year. This is the case irrespective of whether the

worker has requested that the holiday be carried forward or not. Although in such circumstances holiday leave may be carried forward it is not yet entirely clear for how long that untaken holiday can be carried forward. ELL THANK YOU

Jay and Emma at ELL salon

Local lady Emma Lawson is celebrating three years in business at her Tewkesbury hair salon. Emma and her partner Jay opened ELL in Barton Street at the height of the recession, and put their subsequent success down to listening to customers and giving them what they want. “Using the best possible products and providing service second to none are also of paramount importance,” said Emma. Emma and Jay offer hair services to men, women and children - and also cater for special occasions such as weddings. Expert hair colouring, hair extensions and wigs are also available. The couple have asked us to thank all ELL’s clients for their fantastic support over the first three years.

39 High Street may become a vintage centre

GRAND DESIGNS FOR GEORGIAN BUILDING Ruth Lane of Tewkesbury’s Replay Vintage hopes to open another antique and vintage centre in the town, with partner Shaun Neuvel. They plan to use the grand Georgian building at 39 High Street to house their new shop. The property is unusual as it has a

grand arched entrance, which was formerly used as access for horses and carriages. The present building actually comprises two adjoining red brick houses. Ruth Lane is currently celebrating 25 years of trading. She says her new business will specialise in appealing antiques and vintage clothing, including solid oak tables and chairs. Enduring quality furniture like this has become very popular of late and is increasingly in demand.

A bright sunny day greeted the Autumn Coffee Morning at Abbeyfield House in Church Street, Tewkesbury. The event raised well over £150, with more donations still arriving. The residents and Committee members were thrilled to greet a goodly number of friends and guests, who mingled inside the house and outside in the garden area. A visit by Laurence Robertson M.P. was greeted enthusiastically as the residents took the opportunity to show him around the house. Mr Robertson admitted to being surprised at the facilities available as well as the wonderful setting, with the Abbey gardens forming almost an extension to those of the house. Tewkesbury Abbeyfield Society has been run by volunteers since it was formed forty one years ago. Two of the founder committee members, Mrs Betty Martin and Mr Harry Workman, came along to wish the house well as ever. The House Committee, led by Mrs Lesley Chatham and assisted by the resident housekeeper, served coffee and a selection of delicious homemade cakes as well as organising the raffle. The cash raised will be used to provide little extras for the house and residents.

NEWTOWN’S FASCINATING HISTORY with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society s today Springfield

The car auctions at Newtown

Last February a packed meeting really did agree that Newtown was not too new to have a fascinating history. Much of Newtown’s land is covered with new residential estates like Springfield. The jury is still out on the exact location of the former Spa but we now have photographs of the Car Auctions which covered the orchards with asphalt - only to be ousted in its turn by a housing estate. Time does not, indeed, stand still. This photograph was

provided by Mrs Stead, whose father came from Somerset to work at the auctions – and she succumbed to the delights of settling in Newtown, of course!. Mrs. Stead is but one part of a community which provided so many new photographs of the area. ‘Tin Town’ once again proved fascinating with photographs from Mike Fisher, Sue Bagley and Margaret Lewis. Documents about the history of Spa Gardens were produced by Mrs. Workman – and Sheila Nash wrote her own history of Walton House,

when her beloved children’s home was faced with closure in the 1980s. Accordingly we feel that we must share this profusion of community history at a meeting on Tuesday, 13 November 2012 at 7.30 p.m., this time at the Boys’ Brigade HQ, Canterbury Leys to whom the evening is dedicated. If you have any more information on Newtown, John Dixon would love to hear from you. Please email johnhistory46@btinternet.co m or ring 01684 294262.

RAJSHAHI UP FOR NATIONAL AWARD Prime Minister David Cameron named them ‘The Curry Oscars’ - accolades which recognise the best and most innovative dishes served up by the nation’s favourite restaurants. The annual British Curry Awards will be held this year at Battersea Evolution, London, on Monday 26th November. Tewkesbury Indian and Bangladeshi Restaurant the Rajshahi are hoping to do well in this prestigious ceremony. In previous years the High Street restaurant has won several ‘spice awards’ after being rec-

ommended by its clientele. Proprietor Nas Uddin said : “We have been nominated by our customers once again, and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will do well this year.” The Rajshahi has a well-earned reputation for the quality of its fusion Indian and traditional cuisine and attracts customers from a wide area. This Christmas Nas and his experienced team are offering an authentic Indian banquet on Christmas Day, alongside a festive five course roast lunch. For more details pop in or call 01684 273727.

IF IN DOUBT ASK HELEN There is not much Helen Burns doesn’t know about what’s going on in Tewkesbury, and now she has a shop in Church Street where anyone can drop in for advice and a chat. Helen's Allsorts is an emporium for gifts, cards, DVDs, CDs and collectables in fact you never know what you will find within. Some ranges are for sale on behalf of local charities, but moreover Helen has local tourism, rail service and housing advice and literature. So you will probably come away with a little more than you bargained for when you drop in for a visit.

TEWKESBURY FESTIVAL OF CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

THOUSANDS EXPECTED FOR LIGHTS AND MARKET Tewkesbury is hosting its annual Festival of Christmas lights on Sunday 25 November. It’s one of Gloucestershire’s largest Christmas events of its kind, attracting hundreds of families into the town centre which is closed off to traffic and transformed into a bustling festive market place. This year there will be a medieval theme to bolster the festive celebrations. In 2013 Tewkesbury celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Medieval Festival. Look out for the stallholders dressed in medieval costume, spot the high street shops with medieval styled shop windows, and tap your feet to the beat of medieval themed music. The event opens at 11.00am with Grenchurch Farmer’s Market. You’ll find an array of attractive stalls laden with fresh and locally sourced produce. Sample fine cheeses, and homemade preserves, jams and chutneys. There’s rich fruit Christmas puddings and cakes, mince pies and traditional mulled wine on offer. By lunchtime the town is buzzing with the festive atmosphere.

Tewkesbury Town Band (Photo: Nick Jones) While parents browse the numerous rows of Christmas market stalls to pick up a unique gift or Christmas treat, there is plenty of free entertainment to keep the smallest members of the family entertained including a traditional Punch and Judy Show. There are also Danter’s fairground rides for those seeking thrills and spills and the

fun of the fair. The town centre will be filled with festive music and cheer through the day with traditional Christmas music courtesy of the youngest members of Tewkesbury Town Training Band. Plus Christmas carols aplenty from local school children and community choir as well as family entertainment including street dancing.

As well as beautiful and unusual fashions at Pretty Special, you will always find gorgeous silver jewellery set with semi precious stones, funky and practical bags, scarves in a myriad of colours and lots of fabulous gift ideas at really affordable prices! Gift vouchers also available. 93 Church Street Tewkesbury 01684 299160 Open Mon-Sat 10am-5pm

‘Waterline’ by Ross Raisin - author of ‘God’s own Country’

Scot Mick Little goes to pieces when his beloved wife dies from asbestos poisoning carried home on his clothes from Glasgow’s shipyards. Eventually he leaves for London where he becomes homeless; this gritty story records tough streetlife, and how hard it is to get one’s life back under control, and how Mick tries with help from his son, and a fellow drifter. CHRISTMAS IN BISHOP’S CLEEVE

CLEEVE LIGHTS UP The countdown to Christmas has begun - and Bishop’s Cleeve is getting ready to light up for the festive season once more. Father Christmas himself will be taking time out of his busy schedule to drop by the village around 5pm on Saturday 24th November. The ceremony, which draws hundreds of local folk evey year, will take place at a specially erected stage near Laburnum Cottage on Church Road in the heart of the village. Bishop’s Cleeve’s traders will be open to support the event, with a wealth of independent shops offering a huge array of gift ideas for Christmas. Father Christmas has been booked to turn the lights on, and some special guests are expected to arrive too. Tewkesbury Town Band will be playing seasonal music, and there will be fairground rides and other attractions. The event is being organised once again by Bishop’s Cleeve Chamber of Commerce, who are also behind the village’s annual Summer Street Fair. Half the funds raised at this event are put towards funding the festive illuminations.

In recent years, Bishop’s Cleeve has been one of the fastest growing areas in Tewkesbury Borough. A variety of new stores have opened to meet the needs of the community, but the village centre has retained its unique character with a high proportion of individual shops and businesses. There is also a full range of professional services, a wide choice of places to eat and drink, and an unhurried feel to the place so often lacking in the modern High Street.

Eager anticipation

OPEN: Ho, ho, ho - 3-2-1!! At Christmas time Bishop’s Cleeve takes on a traditional atmosphere to match the good old fashioned service which is found year round in its retail outlets. There is ample parking right in the village centre and much to attract the shopper. So to find that extra special gift this year, experience the difference in Bishop’s Cleeve. Come on down on Saturday 24th November and get Christmas off to a fine start. For an update of what’s on, visit w w w. b i s h o p s c l e evechamber.co.uk

WHAT’S ON IN BISHOP’S CLEEVE

CONCERTS SELL OUT A new series of musical events for Autumn has proved to be a resounding success in Bishop’s Cleeve. The Cleeve Concerts, which have so far featured Beverley Craven and Johnny Coppin live on stage, aim to present established artists in the intimate setting of the Tithe Barn. Next to top the bill is Benny Gallagher - one half of the legendary duo Gallagher & Lyle - best remembered for hits such as ‘Breakaway’, ‘Heart On My Sleeve’, ‘I Wanna Stay With You’ and ‘When I’m Dead and Gone.’ The prolific songwriter will perform on Friday 23rd November. Kiki Dee became a household name when she scored an international number one hit with ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’ - a duet with Elton John. These days Kiki sings her hits in collaboration with instrumentalist Carmelo Luggeri, delivering emotional performances. The pair will be in concert at Bishop’s Cleeve Tithe Barn on Sat 24th November. The musical weekend concludes on Sunday 25th November, when The Fab Beatles, one of the UK’s most respected Beatles tribute bands, takes the audience back

Kiki Dee to the sixties and seventies. This band were even booked by EMI to promote the Beatles ‘One’ album.

Last year Chantel McGregor was voted Young Artist of the Year at the British Blues Awards, and has been nominated again this year. An amazing guitarist, she concludes the autumn concerts with a show on Sunday 2nd December. Tickets for all the concerts are available from Courtyard Books and Cheltenham Town Hall. For more information visit www.cleeveconcerts.co.uk or call 0844 576 2210.

It has become a Tewkesbury tradition that every year the Mayor visits local businesses and judges which flower display deserves a special recognition. This is also an opportunity for the organisers of Tewkesbury in Bloom to thank everyone involved in making the town so beautiful and replete with so many wonderful flower displays. Ken Powell the Town Mayor told the assembled group how impressed he was by every entry into his competition. He explained how difficult it was to make the choice because he was faced with such a plethora of talent and beauty. The Chairman of Tewkesbury in Bloom, John Badham, told everyone that this year there were more baskets, tubs and coronets than ever before. The town looked splendid and this was in a year when support from the Town Council was much reduced and the grant from the Borough had been withdrawn some years ago. We were, he said, having to do more with a lot less, we needed yet more support! He said that he had great hopes for the town in the Britain in Bloom

competition – the results out in mid September. He thanked the incredible support of local business, not only in providing their own displays but also in sponsoring all the tubs, baskets and coronets. It did make a difference, he said, Tewkesbury was richer and more attractive for all of this.

The Pubs and Restaurant Category was won by the Black Bear, second prizes to My Great Grandfathers and the Britannia Inn. The third prize went to the Abbey Tea room. The Hotels and Bed and Breakfast category was won by the Royal Hop Pole, second was No2 Back of Avon and third Church Street Bed and Breakfast and the Jessop House.

This was quite difficult mainly because their were few funds to draw upon. However, the Town Council together with others made sure that this important event was enthusiastically marked in the town. The Town Council paid for and distributed Jubilee Medals which went to every primary school child in the town. To make this even more unique the Mayor replete in full regalia and the Town Crier magnificently attired in red coat, coloured waistcoat and knee breeches, both totally looking the part, appeared in each primary school to present the

All the main organisations of the town laid on special events – the Abbey, the Roses Theatre, the Methodist Church and many others. However the Town Council was involved in the main event (at least in terms of the numbers attending ) at the Tewkesbury Rugby Club on June 4th. This event attracted up to 4,000 people. It included stalls, fair rides, dance displays, hog roast, music and singers, beer festival and the ubiquitous ice cream stall. The purpose was to provide fun activities and free, or at least fairly cheap, attractions that could

This year the town really entered into the spirit of the Heritage Open Day. One thing Tewkesbury has a lot to display is its heritage. This was an opportunity to show the world (or at least those discerning enough to visit the town) something of what we have to offer. Also the whole exercise was done for free. The Town Museum opened its doors for two days and offered lots of children’s activities. This was also the case at the John Moore museum. Wetherspoons at the Royal Hope Pole allowed visitors to view the fascinating remains of the medieval hall. The Abbey offered tours of the 44 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

Prizes were awarded in four categories. The Retail Shop category was won by Dave Dudley the Butcher, with second prize going to Jennings Carpets and the Kingfisher Fish and Chip shop. The third prize was awarded to Ginger’s Hairdressers.

make this a special day for all Tewkesburians, and especially families. It all ended with a disco in the Rugby Club and the lighting of the beacon in the vineyards. None of this would have been possible without the help of our very generous sponsors, which together with the Town Council, included Severnvale Housing, Badham Pharmacy, Cotteswold Diary and Shelby Powell. However, the real star of the show was the Rugby Club and especially Adrian Bishop who provided and set up the marquee. Without him and them nothing would have been possible. The Town Council helped sponsor a display of photographs in the Corn Exchange which showed how the streetscape had changed in the sixty years since the 1950s. The was a revamped and modified development of a similar exhibition put on ten years ago. To achieve this required the hard work of numerous Civic Society volunteers and required

many hours to set up and take down. The driving force behind this was Maureen Turland who was responsible for the contemporary photographs and the artwork. It was largely her vision that made this possible. It was even suggested that this might be an annual event – given the time and effort involved we hope we can persuade Maureen and her small band of enthusiasts to oblige. it was wonderful to experience the interest and genuine appreciation of the over 800 people who visited the Town Hall over these two days.

Tewkesbury, like the rest of the country and indeed the world, remains in the grip of one of the worst recessions we’ve seen and it’s at this difficult time that I want to take this opportunity to reassure you that, whilst times are tough, the Town Council remains committed to doing everything it can to benefit this brilliant town. Like you, we are struggling to find the money we need to complete the projects we wish to and to make our visions for the town a reality, but we remain committed to delivering them and to supporting the growth and securing a bright future for Tewkesbury. We are aware that there are many people living locally who sometimes become frustrated at how slowly some projects appear to progress. I reassure you that this is not due to lack of vision or lack of support from the council, merely lack of funding and lack of time. The Town Council welcomes input from people living locally and wishes you to continue to pledge your support. I urge you to read this newsletter which includes lots of great news and information about some of the positive things that we’re supporting in the town, some of which you will hopefully already have seen or benefited from.

Hopefully you will have noticed that several of the litter bins in the High Street have been reconditioned as part of an ongoing programme to repair and replace as necessary throughout the parish. The aim is to tidy up the appearance of the bins by recycling where possible and replacing only if beyond repair, thus reducing cost. Again with notice boards we are using this scheme as residents of Mitton may be aware. The information board adjacent to the shops has been temporarily removed to undergo refurbishment and will be returned as soon as possible, looking as good as new! One of the benches in the High Street had sustained some damage to the back, this has now been dealt with and the bench fit for use again. A grit bin has been purchased and is ready for sitting as Brookside, and will be in place before the colder weather sets in. Councillor Kevin Cromwell

If it can be said that an institution has a face, the face of Tewkesbury Town Council is that of Pat. In August 2012 Pat is retiring from her post in the council after over twenty four years of magnificent service. She has been an assistant to the Town Clerk over a period of enormous change. Her first boss was Colonel Blakemore, her second Major Wilson and her third Mrs Pauline Clarke. All these have very different styles and Pat has coped with them all. Perhaps most of all she has had to deal with the endless demands of generations of Councillors. Whether this has been photocopying, or to make an enquiry on their behalf, every request has been responded to with cheerful good humour and remarkable efficiency. When members of the public contact the council, it is often Pat who is their first port of call. Over the years she has secured the respect and even affection of the many regular telephoners, emailers and ringers of the bell at the reception desk. She has developed an encyclopaedic knowledge of the rules and sometimes strange traditions that govern the

working of a Town Council and this one especially. She is able to guide the uninitiated in a way that seems still to be so fresh and interested, even when her day has been especially fraught and demanding . She puts up so well with the unenviable task of minute taking in meetings that seem to last for ever. In sort she has become the quintessently ideal secretary, in just the way she intended all those years ago when she enrolled in the Dowty Secretarial College when she left school. Most of all Pat loves this town, despite having the misfortune of being originally from Cheltenham. She has given so much to Tewkesbury and its people, one can see how wise Colonel Blakemore was when he persuaded her to move from Dowty Engineering all those years ago. The Town Hall will not seem the same without her, although one knows that in all sorts of other ways she will continue to serve the community she loves. We all wish Pat a long, well deserved and happy retirement.

At the June meeting I was pleased to be reelected as Chair of the Environment Committee for a second year. We have continued with programmes already started – tree works and CCTV upgrading. The Town Council Tree Warden, Councillor Aldridge has compiled a list of trees that are the responsibility of the Council along with inspection timescales and type of maintenance required. This year a dead Rowan tree has been removed and replaced at the Back of Avon and remedial work carried out to a Silver Birch at the St Marys Lane moorings. Further works will take place as necessary. I am pleased to report that the relevant planning applications for the installation of the new CCTV have now been passed by Tewkesbury Borough Council. Work on the installation is due immediately following the Mop fair and the system should be operational by the end of October. Following the refurbishment and alterations to the High Street, the Town Council were involved with the final cleaning up process. Many of the businesses regularly have their windows cleaned so the empty shop windows were given a much needed wash and the streets given an extra sweep or litter picked up in order to showcase the new look of the High Street. Cllr Julie Greening

NEW SECERTARY At the end of August we said goodbye to Pat Macdonald who had served the Town Council as secretary for 24 years and is now enjoying a well earned retirement. I am now pleased to be able to welcome Leah Cassidy who joins Carmel Perry in the office to assist in the running of the administrative duties in the office and wish her well in the future. MAYOR MAKING Interest is sought from within the town from anyone able to provide Catering for next year’s Mayor Making on 13 May 2013. Please contact the Clerk for further details.

This has been an absolutely wonderful year for flowers in Tewkesbury, despite more than usual crop of difficulties. The main one was the weather, which for most of this summer has more closely resembled a monsoon, albeit a rather chilly one! As always this organisation would only exist because of the enthusiasm of a small and dwindling group of volunteers, as well as the generosity of a small number of sponsors. In the past we were amply supported by grants from Tewkesbury Borough as well the Town Council. Sadly the Borough no longer renders this service and our grant from the Town has this year been somewhat reduced. We are very grateful for anything the Town can spare and recognise these are difficult times. However, this has meant that there is a shortfall this year and to maintain our high standards we will need continuing and indeed increased support in the future. Having said this, there are more flowers in the town than ever. The High Street has many more tubs and coronets than before. Now that the High Street has been restored, the combination of more flowers, beautiful medieval banners and the jubilee flags makes this street especially impressive. One visitor described this area of

the town as, ‘a wonderful riot of colour and lively interest’. What could be better for the promotion of our lovely market town? All this requires a lot of hard work. Brian Williams of Cornerways Nursery in Twyning gives us the most fabulous service. He is often watering plants at 5.00 am in the morning. Our little committee of Peter and Chris Aldridge, Marion and John Badham, Brian Williams and Brian Reeve together with the remarkable Margaret White organise the floral displays and the programme that the judges expect when they come in July. What is so special about this town is the extraordinary generosity of so many. On judgement day – for us July 10th when the Britain in Bloom judges arrive - it was wonderful to welcome them to Abbey House and the hospitality of the vicar and his wife. At the end of the tour ‘ My Great Grandfather’s ‘ provided a fantastic high tea for our guests. Roger Workman drove them into town in his 1933 Morris Isis – a truly regal experience.

The county highways piloy scheme “FIX FIRST VISIT” launched in April this year has proved a great success to date. Reaction and feedback from the public has been very positive. The new approach for pothole repairs without the need for prior inspection has made delivery quicker and more efficient, also enabling highway crews to encompass other defects in the same location, not just potholes, but weed clearance, sign cleaning, unblocking drains, grip clearance etc. This has enabled G.H. to carry out repairs to 21,600 potholes since launch with only 620 awaiting repair as October 1st and has achieved considerable savings and long term betterment to the network. The county council will continue to engage with communities and are looking at how we can take the scheme forward and develop. This scheme is being monitored by DFT with consideration to adopt nationally. Locally Mitton, Northway, Twyning and recently Newtown have been very successful (Twyning 98 defects reported and completed)/ This new scheme I have introduced can also be programmed into the new highways contract to continue into the future, giving real long term benefits, when we are all aware less money is available in the present and economic climate. DRAINAGE The county council administration is still fully committed to flood alleviation projects and as such planning for next year’s schemes. 46 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

We are so pleased that we secured a wonderful Gold Award at the RHS September presentations. Sadly we had to concede best in category to Ledbury yet again – there is always next year.

Working in partnership with districts I would ask the town council to consider what is their priority, and ask for them to discuss at the environment committee any possible projects that they would like the county to consider.

Local Issues Northway drainage scheme 2nd phase also been held up due to weather and surface dressing backlog. Gully emptying rotas for the town and local areas will be advertised as normal, would also point out G.C.C commitment to this vital maintenance work. Please contact Richard Walters for more information. ON-STREET PARKING REVIEW The county council has asked DISTRICT COUNCILS to review their parking strategies and the way they enforce regulations, and the town council will play an important part in this process over the coming months. This is an important review for T.B.C. which the borough exectuive agreed (3rd October) to look at their charging strategy this Autumn for all car parks. Finally I wish to thank town councillors Kevin Cromwell, Julie Greening, John Badham and Pete Aldridge for taking part in some of the car parking working group meetings chaired by borough councillor Adele Carter, putting a case study/plan, (portas review) together for the viability to reduce charges witin the town/borough. Special thanks to councillor Karen Brennan.

FAB FABRIC SWAP Calling all sewing and craft enthusiasts! A fantastic charity fabric swap and sale will take place this month at Beckford Village Hall. It will be held on Friday 30th November, from 10am until 2pm, at Beckford Village Hall. The event is to raise vital funds for the local charity FOAG which supports a school in Uganda. The idea of the swap is that you dig out

fabrics, trims and buttons which you own but haven't ever got around to using. Then you bring them down to the swap and browse through all the other material to find equivalent fabrics that you love! You'd be amazed at the gorgeous materials, trims, buttons and haberdashery that people bring along. Admission is £5 at the door, including coffee/tea and a slice of cake. Pop along for a brilliant and inspiring event, for an extremely worthy cause. A children's playground is next to the hall, with plenty of parking. For details call Christina 07968-952-387

FABULOUS FINDS IN TEWKESBURY

STAMPS ATTRACT INTEREST Stamp collecting used to be a childhood hobby but it has gone out of fashion over recent years. However, we have been surprised to see the interest shown in old stamps since they have been available at Bookworm, writes Karen Brennan. They are a great source of information that covers geography, history, art and design. With the help of the internet, researching them has become much easier. The advent of new countries and name changes can pose quite a puzzle when deciding how to categorise the stamps but that's all part of the fun! There are also those of us who just collect the flower or butterfly designs because they

are attractive. First day covers and commemorative stamps are also very collectable. So if you are looking for an interest for the winter, philately is worth considering. Start with a country, or an era if concentrating on GB stamps, and see where the journey takes you.

MOTORING MATTERS with Anthony Stockman

CENTRE LANE HOGS ARE A MENACE TREAD CAREFULLY

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; in fact I’ll keep on about it until the talked about legislation becomes law! writes Anthony Stockman. I’ve spent a lot of time on our motorways recently and the problem seems to be getting worse, as all those selfish and thoughtless drivers cling to the centre lane as if their lives depended on it! What they, or YOU, if you’re one of them, are doing, is changing a three lane motorway into a dual carriageway. If we had the same laws as the USA, where the Freeway allows you to pass on either side, it wouldn’t be a problem, but we don’t – AND IT IS!

ON ICY ROADS

Anthony Stockman The deal is people: if you’re not overtaking anything that’s reasonably close, then PULL OVER into the left lane. That simple move will cut down congestion improve traffic flow dramatically. Hogging the centre lane for no reason, is thoughtless, frustrating and just plain selfish. DON’T DO IT! Anthony Stockman

There has been much confusion in recent years regarding the use of dedicated winter or snow tyres on British roads. Conflicting safety reports have left a good many motorists, particularly those who live in rural areas, wondering whether it is wise or economical to use them. The National Tyre Distributors’ Association has a useful and informative website (www.ntda.co.uk) with various links which could help you make your own decision.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

YOU ARE GREAT!

Local Hypnotherapist and Counsellor, David Slater, encourages you to have a fresh look at yourself and like who you see.

You would be amazed how many people I see who, when asked , “Do you like yourself ?” say “ No”! They tend to feel that they are at fault in situations they can’t change or maybe seem to have more bad luck than others and fail to cope. A short chat later and that view has usually changed. The more time you spend feeling sorry for yourself, the more

doesn’t have anything to do with the circumstances you happen to be facing. See yourself as the unique, beautiful, creative and effective person you know you can be. The person you know you are. See yourself as having a bundle of positive ideas that you are going to see become reality. See that you are able to successfully handle whatever life sends

things you’ll have to be sorry about. If you insist on seeing yourself as a victim, you’ll end up being one. Is that what you want ? Of course not. So DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! It doesn’t have to be that way. You can choose right now, and every single day, to see yourself in a positive, strong light. The way you see yourself is up to you. It

your way and just know that you are able to thrive and grow and make positive meaning out of the world in which you live. See yourself as constantly stepping forward, with love and joy and purpose. And what you see, you will be. Believe me?

Tewkesbury Tigers Under 9s Rugby team travelled to Stow last month for their first contact matches of the season. The first game saw Tewkesbury run out 30-20 winners; in the second both clubs fielded completely different sides and although Tewkesbury tackled well, Stow were victorious. A third highly competitive game combined players from the other two, and Tewkesbury defended gallantly to hold on to their 20-10 lead. The Tigers thanked Stow for a really enjoyable day’s Rugby.

Last month the Jelly Roll Café in Tewkesbury featured a trio of jazz musicians to perform to a dining audience, wrties Rob Wakerley. “You must be from the News of the World then?” said Kevin Grenfell, the trombonist in the Jazz trio. I explained that I wrote for the Tewkesbury Direct magazine, and even though his expectations may not have been lived up to - mine certainly were. The trio of musicians consisting of Kevin Grenfell, Richard Leach and Roger Heeley, put on a show of jazz that impressed the many diners in the Jelly Roll Café. They ranged their repertoire from famous Fats Waller songs, to ‘Bye Bye Blues’- a jazz classic which just couldn’t be left out. The mix of Roger

Rob Wakerley Heeley’s expert piano playing, combined with the sounds of two trombonists, carried throughout the Jelly Roll Café on the sunny Sunday afternoon. Their entertaining interaction with the audience complemented the performance, as they got them laughing inbetween songs. If you ever want some great Jazz for a live event, this is the group to call!
