ABBEY RINGS OUT TROUGH MYSTERY John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society has had his attention drawn to these photographs taken recently in Back of Avon. An enthusiast from the London Troughs Association would like to know more about these former cattle troughs. It is thought there were once three in the town: in Worcester Road near Ledbury Road/Mythe Bridge; Tewkesbury & Bredon Road (Oldbury Road junction?) and on Ashchurch Road. Do any readers remember them from their youth or were perhaps involved in moving them to be a decoration in Back of Avon? If so please email John Dixon on johnhistory46@btinternet.com

CHALLENGING BRIEF FOR TEWKESBURY SCHOOL HORTICULTURE STUDENTS

Horticulture students from Tewkesbury School have been given an important brief, to design a Memorial and Wildlife Garden to give comfort to bereaved pet owners. Alistair Hudson is a manager for CPC, which runs the new pet crematorium on Shannon Way in Tewkesbury. He comments: “Pets are important members of the family for many people and their loss can cause considerable distress. In the past people would often give their pet a burial in the garden but increasingly this isn’t possible. “CPC opened the UK’s first pet crematorium over 35 years ago near Cambridge to allow pet owners the chance to say goodbye in a dignified way. “Demand for our service has increased with people travelling great distances to say their final farewell, so we have now opened a pet crematorium in Tewkesbury and want to get everything finished in time for the official opening this Spring. “We saw the imaginative garden the pupils from Tewkesbury School designed for the Malvern Show last year and we

thought it would be great if they could bring their ideas and enthusiasm to a brief for CPC’s memorial and wildlife garden.” Clare de Glanville is Assistant Headteacher of Tewkesbury School and teaches the Year 9 horticulture students. She comments: “The students enjoyed developing the garden for the Malvern Show last year but that was temporary. “It is wonderful to give them the opportunity to design a garden near to where they live, that they will be able to see develop and that their friends or family may benefit from in the future. “To understand the brief we had a workshop with Young Gloucestershire to talk about bereavement and how it affects people. “Many of the pupils had lost a pet, or knew someone that had, and it was an opportunity to talk about our emotions and how to comfort

someone. “It is great to have a real brief and to have Julie, a professional landscape gardener, to give us the benefit of her advice.” Julie Ritchie from Hoo House Nursery started out as a landscape architect before starting her perennial and alpine plant nursery so she was able to advise the pupils on how to approach the brief. Julie comments: “I was happy to help the students assess the garden space and how it will be used. “Understanding the aspect, soil and site boundaries helps to inform an intelligent design and a well-planted garden. “I hope their contribution will become part of a place that will be enjoyed for many years to come.” The pupils were full of ideas for water features and a wildlife garden that would improve the surroundings and provide a tranquil environ-

ment for people to appreciate as they wait for their pet’s ashes to be ready. For ore information about CPC’s www.cpccares.com

the 30th May and 6th June for individuals and families, special sessions for mobility scooter riders and start up sessions available for clubs and groups. Please email parade@tewkesburymedievalfestival.org to book onto one of these sessions or for further details. Places are limited so early booking

Vintage fair was a classic Last month visitors to Tewkesbury's vintage fair stepped back in time to enjoy the 'good old days' at the Watson Hall, writes Shelby Powell. Nostalgic entertainment and vintage themed shopping were the order of the day. Special highlights included a fashion show, live music and a lindy hop dance demonstration. The vintage packed day was rounded off with musical highlights

from 'Sweet Charity' performed by members of Tewkesbury Manor Players. Generous fair goers donated £100 for the Town Mayor's charity fund to support Chris Danter's plans to improve the Town Hall garden.

Severn Walk is situated in picturesque Apperley within a short walking distance of amenities such as local pubs, schools, the River Severn and the historic village of Deerhurst. Tewkesbury is just a short drive away. The homes are being constructed by RRS Land & Property Development, a local company who pride themselves on using only locally sourced materials, suppliers and skilled staff to build houses of excellent design to exacting standards to provide extremely well appointed accommodation.

When I came to Tewkesbury in 2002, there was a plan to make Oldbury Road and Nelson Street the main two-way thoroughfare after the pedestrianisation of the High Street, writes John Dixon. Our senior citizens must have been shocked when they remember how narrow Nelson Street was before the demolition of 18-20 Barton Street – that was the Nelson Inn. Behind it were not only cottages but the former Salvation Army Citadel and a row of houses with Huntley’s Court to the rear. Thanks to Sheila Nash and the late Bob Woodard for raising my awareness. Go back to 1808 when Oldbury Road and East Street were known as Road No I, the only entrance was via Nelson’s Alley (just above the ‘n’ on the map above).

GETTING THE RIGHT SUPPORT after Breast surgery

PART II (continued from April issue) What of the worries to a woman on how she will look in her clothes following “the op” if reconstruction is not an option? writes Pam Thomas of Joyce Brooks Lingerie. Emotionally this is such a sensitive time but again there is help at hand. Do go to a specialist bra fitter who stocks brands of bras which are pocketed and suitable for use with a prosthesis – a breast shaped substitute usually made of silicone. There are various brands on the market, some will be suitable , others not, and , as with all bras, there is no substitute for trying on and asking the bra fitter to help. Any good bra fitter will not phased or shocked by seeing someone who has had surgery – their only concern will be to make sure you are comfortable in the bra and that it gives a good look with clothes over it. If you prefer to try on garments on your own then that’s fine – just get it checked by the fitter to make absolutely sure the bra does do you justice. Often the advice is not to wear an under wired bra for a period of time- take advice from your breast care nurse about this. There is a good choice of non wired bras available, plain and pretty, with pockets from companies such as Anita, Royce, and Aneoma, but if you have another favourite non wired bra, perhaps a Triumph Doreen, then pockets (flaps) can be

purchased to sew in. It is a good idea to buy a new bra before you see the breast care nurse for a silicone prosthesis. The bra should fit the good breast well, be flush against the top of the breast (no double bubbles!!) and no breast tissue should be visible under the cup. The back band should feel secure and firm but not so tight as to pinch or be restrictive to movement. You should, as well, try sitting in the bra just to be sure it is comfortable when you relax. Getting this right will help the breast care nurse to ensure the prosthesis balances the other breast and once dressed, clothes look just as good as before surgery. It might be however, that deep plunging necklines are not a good idea! Should a double mastectomy have been performed then it is up to the individual to decide what cup size would be preferred. The fitter will then judge the back size only. In this case there are some well padded bras which might be preferred to using pocketed bras e.g. Silhouette U36, an AAA cup, non wired and well padded, available in 32, 34, 36 backs only. A similar bra is Triumph AM300P, available in an AA cup, again padded and non wired. Some brands do sell pocketed under wired bras – take advice from your breast care nurse on individual suitability and time scales following surgery. Pam Thomas

EARLY MORNINGS CALLS We are now well into the busy season at Vale Wildlife Hospital. Spring has finally sprung and the thoughts of wildlife turn to breeding, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Many people are unaware of what goes on at Vale and of the number of people involved in the day to day running of the hospital. In total, we have fifteen employees, some full and some part-time, including our vet and also the manager of our charity shop in Evesham. Each day we have four or five Care Assistants in, responsible for the daily cleaning, feeding and treating of the casualties in our care and they are helped by a team of regular volunteers, usually so at least two per day so that we always have enough pairs of hands to make sure the care of our patients is the best it can be. The hospital is manned 24 hours a day and our night staff are there to tend to casualties that need more intensive care, for hand feeding any baby birds or mammals that require it and to be available to admit any animals that are brought in by the public out of hours. The day starts before 7am for some of our staff as we have animals that need hand feeding or medications administering from first thing in the morning. The rest of the staff and volunteers start at 8am and our oncall staff member arrives later to man the hospital through the evening and night. The weekends are always busier for us than weekdays as more

people are out and about and therefore more animals are found. During the spring and summer months Saturdays are even busier as we also hold our weekly car boot sales on our site every

high metal fence. As we approached we could see that the fox had no use of her hind legs at all but was trying to get away from us by dragging herself along using her front legs. She was caught as she tried

week from April through to the end of September and we have to get the signs out on the local roads for this, open the gates to let the sellers and buyers in as well as carrying out the daily morning tasks back at the Hospital. Call-outs to large mammals such as foxes, badgers or deer can come in at any time of the day or night and we are always available to attend these casualties as they require knowledgable handling and can cause serious injuries to people not used to dealing with them. On one particular Saturday recently, we received a call at around 7am about an injured fox that had been found by a dog but was unable to get away due to a serious leg injury. After taking directions we made our way to Cheltenham and when we arrived at the location the fox was cowering in the corner of a playing field next to a

desperately to escape us by pushing under the metal spikes of the fence. Once back at the hospital, we discovered that she was a lactating vixen, meaning that somewhere out the were fox cubs that are dependant on her for their sur-

vival. Nothing could be done for the vixen as she had a broken back and sadly, unless somebody comes across the cubs, which, if old enough, will venture out looking for mum as they get hungrier, the future for them is not good either unless they are old enough to take food brought in by the dog fox (if he is around). We have to constantly think about possible youngsters being left unattended at this time of year and a large proportion of our intake from now until August will be youngsters needing intense care. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please get in touch. Email us: info@valewildlife.org.uk

Cat of the Month Tabitha was first with us in August last year. Poor Tabitha has had a tough time. She came into care originally as a pregnant stray and was rehomed in December 2014. Sadly, on 19th February, she was hit by a car and had to have her tail removed. She came back into care and is now pretty well recovered and looking for a new home. She's a friendly little girl, loves to play, and will make a wonderful pet.We think she would be fine with older children. TWYNING PLAYERS JOIN THE SALUTE Actors and actresses from Twyning Players will be joining a raft of talented entertainers at the Roses theatre for a commemorative event in aid of Armed Forces Day this summer. The charity fundraising show, ‘We Salute You!’, is being organised by the Te w k e s b u r y branch of the Royal British Legion and is taking place on " Allo Allo! Sunday 28th June (Pic: Andrew Parker_ at 7.30 pm. Organisers expect the audience will be rolling with laughter during the Twyning Players’ performance of highlights from the cult classic BBC TV show “Allo Allo” which has been adapted for stage production. Spokeswoman for Twyning Players Nici Khor who plays the part of German Private Helga Geerhart comments: “When we were approached to play highlights from our 'Allo 'Allo production, we were keen to get involved to help support this fantastic cause. The show organisers felt this fondly remembered wartime comedy would be well received by the audience of We Salute You!” Tewkesbury Solicitor’s practice, Thomson and Bancks, based in Church Street is sponsoring the event. David Bloxham partner commented “Thomson & Bancks LLP is delighted to support this wonderful event again this year, especially as The Royal British Legion is the firm’s chosen charity for the year. We hope it will be a very successful and enjoyable evening in support of such a worthwhile cause.” For those who cannot wait until the 28th June show to see the Twyning Players version of ‘Allo ‘Allo, there is an opportunity to watch them at Twyning Village Hall between 14th and 16 May. PHARMACY MATTERS with Peter Badham

The use of painkillers

Many patients come a pharmacy for pain relief, it is most common area for advice, writes local pharmacist Peter Badham.

Some Luck

We can offer a range of products, some of which can be supplied free of charge (subject to criteria), under the new minor aliment scheme. Paracetamol 500mg is safe to take up to eight doses over 24 hours in an adult. Paracetamol is very safe, and does not cause any addiction. Some patients worry it might become less effective over time; however there is no evidence to support this concern. The next strongest pain killer is cocodamol, which is a mixture of paracetamol and codeine. This comes in three strengths of codeine, an 8mg, a 15 mg or a 30 mg dose. Patients can be supplied with the 8/500 cocodamnol from the pharmacy without a prescription, but the higher strengths are only available via the GP. There are a few variations on this combination of drugs. Some manufactures add in

through American 20th century history - the depression - agricultural mechanism - technology innovation - social change - post war economic revival - the whole spectrum of American life from 1920 to 1953 is portrayed. Each chapter is quite self contained, though certain events such as Frank's college life and war service straddle across sections whereas other storylines are related within one year. Anyone interested in American history, farming and/or 20th century modernisation will savour this window on the Langdons whose lives move away from the family farm to college and university, New York and Washington, communism, politics, espionage, love, sorrow, happiness and heartbreak. RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

THE AVON CIRCULAR WALK

With the lighter nights and (hopefully!) warmer weather here again, there’s no better way to spend an evening than with a stroll by the river, writes Jack B. Walker. This lovely circular walk offers the opportunity do just that - and to enjoy a pint or two at the end of it.

! Historic Eckington Bridge spans the River Avon

! Distance: approx. 3.5 miles; mainly flat. ! Car Parking: Eckington Wharf. ! Refreshments: The Bell Inn and The Anchor Inn at Eckington. Riverside picnic area at Eckington Wharf ! Map not to scale: OS Sheet 190 recommended.

The easy-to-follow route starts from Eckington Wharf’s popular riverside car park and picnic area, on the B4080 just north of the village. Eckington Bridge was built from red sandstone at the start of the 18th century and was recently carefully restored. Cross the road with care, and go through the gate on the opposite side (1). The route now follows the old tow path along the bank for two miles until it reaches Strensham Lock. On the way you will pass under a railway bridge carrying the old Midland Line from Bristol to Birmingham. It is still a busy mainline route today. On the opposite bank you will see boats moored at Defford Quay, and as the river curves around to the south, Strensham Church can be seen high up on the opposite bank. As you reach the lock, look out for the old keeper’s house on an

island mid-stream. This spot is very popular with boaters, and many craft are moored here. As you pass the lock, turn left up the lane (2) and walk along to the T junction. Turn left and carry on up Mill Lane, passing some farm buildings on the left, until you reach Eckington Village. Keep straight along the street, ignoring left turns, until you see the footbridge over the railway (3). Cross this and carry on straight ahead until you reach the B4080. The Bell Inn is to your left: the Anchor Inn is across the street and along the lane opposite. There is also a village stores a little to the right of the junction (4). Turn left and walk along the footpath, keeping straight along the main road. Pass the playing field on the left: shortly after this the path leaves the roadside and descends, behind a hedge, back to Eckington Wharf (5).

LOCAL ACTION GROUP SECURE £1.4 MILLION FUNDING Forest and Tewkesbury Borough Local Action Group (LAG), has secured £1.4 million from the European Rural Development Programme to help support new jobs and economic growth in rural areas. The successful bid submitted to Defra, was developed by the LAG partnership with support from Forest of Dean and Tewkesbury Borough Councils as part of a new joint initiative. The partnership includes representatives from private, public and voluntary organisations, representing different sections of the community. As part of the bid process, the group produced a strategy outlining the rural growth needs across the two districts and potential for investment - and as part of this, a series of public consultation events were held to get the views of the local communities. The programme will be able to fund a wide range of activities with a strong focus on business support, including farm productivity/diversification. Up to 40% funding will be available for new/unique business activities which lead to job creation, without causing displacement of existing business in the

area. Funding will also be available for rural tourism, basic services, culture/heritage and forest productivity where wider economic benefits can be realised. The programme will be open for applications in June/July 2015. Eligible organisations include sole traders, micro businesses, small businesses, social enterprises, tourism providers including attractions, leisure facilities and accommodation provision, farming communi-

ties, woodland owners, social enterprises, parish and town councils, local services provision and special interest community groups. The Local Action Group will make funding contributions of £5,000 upwards. The average award will be around £27,000. Match funding is required. For further information contact Neil Batt, LAG Programme Manager on telephone: 01594 812608 or email: neil.batt@fdean.gov.uk.

KNIGHT FEVER

Armour at the Abbey which, last year gave people the first view of the fantastic Richard III funeral crown, is this year offering visitors the opportunity to get a close look at a medieval cannon, affectionately known as Belle. Visitors will be able meet and talk to King Edward IV and members of his court. Other attractions in and around the wonderful medieval Tewkesbury Abbey include a knighting ceremony, medieval music, a parade of medieval fashions and much more, including a chance to try on medieval armour and find out from the experts just how the traditional English Longbow was made and used. They can watch a medieval bookbinder at work, have a rare opportunity to view an indenture from Henry VII calling amongst other things for prayers to be said for those who died at the Battle of Tewkesbury. Armour at the Abbey is open on Saturday May 2nd and Monday May 4th from 11am to 430pm. On Sunday May 3rd the fun moves out to the

grounds of Abbey House, where there will be displays of hand to hand combat, have-a-go

archery, Hobby Horse racing, for adults and children and much more.

TEWKESBURY ART SOCIETY TO CELEBRATE ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR - BY R0SAMOND FARLEY The Art Society began way back on 28th May 1965. As the saying goes, “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow” such was the case for T.A.S. We were grateful for all the like minded people and met up a couple of times a month towards the end of 1964 when the idea of an art club was first born. This thought matured and finely saw their inaugural meeting on 28th May 1965, which took place at 67 Church Street, Tewkesbury. Like all organisations TAS has had a couple of hick ups. The most memorable one being the Summer Exhibition July 2007. But even the worst flood in almost 100 years could not stop the members who carried on regardless. Many of our wonderful general public still battled through to support their Art Society. Although no paintings were sold and only 42 cards, it was a reminder of business as normal and well done to all. Not even Canute could of stopped the rising water, but it served as an eye opener that Tewkesbury area folk

are made of sterner stuff. The Art Society will celebrate with a buffet for members and past chairman’s at the Boys Brigade Hall. on June 4th. During the week of our Summer Exhibition 19th - 25th July, there will be a “Walking Exhibition” around town, this will involve many of the shops taking part, and we are grateful so many have consented. This involves each shop displaying a TAS members painting in their shop windows. We are also sponsoring a tub of flowers for

“Tewkesbury in Bloom” again to celebrate our Golden Anniversary. Over the years Tewkesbury Art Society has gone from strength to strength, recently we have had many more people join thus swelling our membership, which now stands at 67. Once a fortnight we either have own painting day or a demonstration by a well known Artist, then a couple of times a year we have all day workshops. These prove very popular. At the demonstrations we charge £3. for non members, many visitors eventually become full members. Demonstrations are advertised in National Art Magazines and local

press. We have a website, www.t-a-s.info, you can also find us on Face Book. We are a happy band of painters, from all walks of life and all abilities, everyone is made most welcome and there’s always someone on hand with advice and encouragement over a

coffee. The past years we have enjoyed many outings to Art Galleries, Museums, Art in Action and Its All About Art in Bristol. Again these prove very popular. Visiting Artists give demonstrations in either Watercolour, Acrylic, Oils, Pastel, sketching etc. In May there will be

a “Life” drawing morning members only. The History Of Tewkesbury Art Society by Daphne Regan was published in 2010 and makes interesting reading.

HUGE COURT FEE INCREASES OF UP TO 600 PER CENT NEEDS HIGHLIGHTING, SAY LAW EXPERTS Massive fee increases of up to 600% for bringing a money claim case to court have been put in place in the past few weeks, and it needs highlighting claim Tewkesbury Law firm DF Legal.

The Government confirmed in January that the fee for issuing a civil claim worth more than £10,000 would be increased to 5% of the sum claimed, with a

maximum fee set at £10,000. The move followed a consultation that prompted criticism from many of the judicial systems senior legal figures,

as well as the country’s business community. “The concerns include the risk that higher fees would limit justice to those with financial means,” said Daljit

Bhogal, of DF Legal. Under the new rules, fees on a claim worth £200,000 have been raised by £8,725, whilst previously the maximum charge for claims over

£300,000 was £1,920 but the new requirements herald an increase of £8,080 or 421%. “We can see it really affecting businesses and believe many companies

ROBERTS EXPRESS DELIVERY HOST A CHARITY GOLF DAY

On Saturday 4th April Roberts Express Delivery (RED) held a charity golf day at Tewkesbury Park Hotel, raising money for Children’s Cancer UK. Thirtysix players took to the green to play some very good golf, as well as some very bad golf! Adrian Tinker topped the scoreboard while Andy Poke walked away with the wooden spoon. RED had generously offered to pay for the players games as well as donating money to the charity however all of the players offered to pay for themselves so that more money could be given to Children’s Cancer UK. A grand total of £350 was raised and a great time was had by all. Special thanks go to Stefan Roberts for providing food and drink for all of the players and also to Gareth who kindly took the golfers home at the end of the night.

For those who couldn’t attend, here are a few top tips for a good bloom. ! Light - They can be placed anywhere in the house as long as they receive good but not direct sunlight in the summer months. Ideally place orchids on an east or west-facing window. ! Temperature - If it is comfortable for humans, in general it is okay for orchids. Most species will thrive at 18–23ºC. When flowering stops, place the orchid at 15–17ºC for a couple of weeks in order to encourage further flowering. Avoid rooms where the temperature

drops below 15ºC at night. ! Humidity - This is the key to success with orchids – most species appreciate high levels of moisture in the air. Bathrooms are ideal rooms to place an orchid as long as they receive

adequate light. Alternatively, they can be misted regularly with clean tepid water. ! Avoid - General purpose fertilisers. They are not suitable for orchids and can be very harmful.

SEVERN UNIT MVS MAKE FAREWELL PRESENTATION TO “BOB THE LOCK” Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service made a trip down to Avon Lock in their training boat Minerva on 13th April to say farewell to Avon Lock Keeper Bob Scarrott who is shortly retiring. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We shall all very much miss seeing Bob on the lock. He has been Lock Keeper for 8 years and Reach Master for the 10 years prior to this and he has become one of the most familiar figures on the Lower Avon. Boaters and visitors alike have always been met with a great welcome from Bob and he has been a marvellous Ambassador for both the river and the town with his good humoured and helpful ways.” The Unit presented Bob with their Certificate of Co-Operation and also a retirement gift. Bob thanked Severn Unit and said “It has been a great pleasure working with the MVS, Over the years they have helped out with tasks ranging from rescuing stranded people and dogs from boats

during floods to pulling out of the river anything from bicycles to shopping trolleys. Many times they have cleared flood debris from King John's Bridge and kept the Avon Navigation signs clear on the confluence of the Severn

and Avon. I have very much enjoyed my years as Lock Keeper and Reach Master and it has been a real pleasure meeting everyone who has passed through Avon Lock.” Happy Retirement Bob!

LAMB PLUCKED OUT OF RIVER AVON TO SAFETY BY MVS Life is never dull for Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service as while out on a recent training evening in their boat Minerva they spot a lamb who had fallen into the river and was unable to get out as it was stuck in the mud and had obviously been there some time.

Head of Unit Nic Price said “We went as close as we could to the bank without becoming stuck ourselves then we tried various means to reach the lamb. Ben FosterSmith managed to throw a rope around the cold, wet and tired little animal and haul it aboard to safety. It was then put back on dry land where

it seemed none the worse for its experi-

ence.”

In times of austerity the number of scams aimed at conning people out of their hard-earned money unfortunately tends to rise, writes acting Police Inspector Henry Wright. In recent years there has been a sharp increase in the number of scams involving charities, whereby individuals either pretend to be raising money for a particular charity, and then keep the money for themselves, or create a bogus charity, which is not registered, and the good cause it claims to help will never receive the promised money. Both of these particular tactics are a criminal offence. In recent weeks we have had several complaints, one about a male collecting for a sponsored walk in aid of The Brecon Mountain Rescue Team. We have since been in contact with the team who have not had any individuals offering to help them from our area and they had not issued any official sponsorship forms. This male was going door to door in several of our local communities and had apparently collected monies totalling several hundred

pounds. A second instance was a male and female collecting on Tewkesbury High Street purporting to be collecting for a registered charity; they were also handing out leaflets promoting healthy eating in children. The collecting buckets were very official looking with a registered charity number but only a percentage of their cash finds its way to charity. When challenged they will reply that they are selling a publication as the leaflet has a face value of fifty pence, these individuals were warned and moved on but no doubt they will return. Most charities will allow you to make a donation or sponsorship on line where you can be sure your money will go those in need. Car crime has once again been the most prevalent offence over the last month with six vehicles being targeted in one street alone; unbelievably three of the six were insecure. Once again please ensure that your car is securely locked and all valuable items are place out of sight in the boot or glove compartment. We have made two arrests and one male has been remanded in custody for a burglary and also several vehicle crimes but I still urge you to be vigilant. Now that the summer appears to have arrived please can I remind all cyclists to be very careful when leaving the their bicycles unattended

when they are out and about. Our thefts of cycles are down on the same period last year and we would like to keep it that way. In relation to that PCSO Sam James has taken delivery of a range of bicycle security locks and chains as part of his ongoing crime preven-

tion shop initiative. He can be contacted by e-mail at Sam.James@gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk Ple ase enjoy the good weather and keep yourself and your property safe. Henry Wright Acting Inspector Tewkesbury Police

WARNERS BUDGENS BUILD NEW SUPERMARKET IN WINCHCOMBE A new purpose built Budgens Supermarket offering 4,000 square feet of retail space will be opening on the former Castleways Coaches site on the Greet Road in Winchcombe. Owner of a chain of Budgens outlets, Guy Warner, is from the Warner family whose roots are deeply entwined with Tewkesbury. The family ran Warners Coaches company and are involved with fuel retail and main dealerships for Citroen, Peugeot and Isuzu vehicles in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury.

Guy told us that customers are reverting to the old ways of shopping. They prefer to buy fresh, they like to support local producers and they like a local shop that is convenient, buy less but more often. Winchcombe is an addition to the group that includes Broadway, Moreton In Marsh, Bidford On Avon and Gloucester. The building work is

expected to start in June and an expected opening date will be Spring 2016. Guy points out that the Warners Budgens chain stocks between forty and fifty brands of locally produced goods and sees this interaction with local companies benefiting the community and presents the customer with the choice and value they would find hard to match.

FOREST RUN IS NO OBSTACLE Team Gym & Tonic, from Bredon Hardwick, completed another muddy obstacle course in the Forest of Dean last month. The awesome course was full of mud, wall climbs, tyre carries, lake crossings, monkey bars, rope swings and lots of laughter - even when the competitors were fired at with paintball guns! Two of the team had originally planned to compete in the 5km race, but in the end all nine completed the 10km course of the Warrior event. The next event for the team is this month's Black light run at Cheltenham Racecourse.
