A public exhibition about proposals for a new retail outlet centre and garden centre at Ashchurch will be held on March 7, 8, and 9. The £30 million development could bring 1,000 jobs to the county.

Gloucestershire developers Robert Hitchins Ltd want to hear what local people think about the proposals before submitting an outline planning application to Tewkesbury Borough Council. The proposed scheme would include a garden centre and retail outlet on 48 acres alongside the south side of the A46, near Junction 9 of the M5.

The public exhibition takes place at Ashchurch Village Hall on Thursday March 7, 1-7pm; Friday March 8, 12 noon – 6pm; Saturday March 9, 9am-12 noon.

Following a local charity’s plea for help in last month’s Tewkesbury Direct, a collection box has been set up in the foyer of Wheatpieces Community Centre where donations can be left, writes Shelby Powell.

Centre Manager, Adam Fendt comments “We are really pleased to help out a local charity.

“We have lots of people pass through our doors each week for classes, events and activities, and it’s much easier for them to drop off their unwanted items here rather than have to make a special journey into town.

“We’ll empty the box when it’s full and make sure the donations get to Bookworm.”

Bookworm raises money for Cancer Research and provides community transport run by volunteers to help people get to and from doctor and hospital appointments.

As well as books, Bookworm is happy to accept donations of clothes, crockery, soft toys, handbags, shoes and electrical items which all go towards the environmentally friendly disposal of unsaleable books.

STUNTMAN’S CLOSE TO THE EDGE LECTURE World-famous stuntman Dick Sheppard will be in town this month, to give an audio visual presentation organised by the Tewkesbury Fair Society.

Norris McWhirter, of the Guinness Book of Records, once said “Dick Sheppard has walked away from more car crashes than any other person.”

TEWKESBURY’S SECRET MUSEUM MAY MOVE It’s not generally known locally, but Tewkesbury is home to an important collection of historic military artefacts and information. The Vehicle Specialist Fellowship’s Museum is currently housed at the MOD site at Ashchurch, but is hoping to re-locate elsewhere in the Borough.

The collection’s curator, Brian Crago, created a private museum on the site in 1994.

Due to its location the museum has not been open to the public, but it has hosted many visitors from military personnel, Commonwealth officers and civilians who worked on the site.

The Vehicle Specialist (VS) was a trade within the Royal Army Ordnance Corps (now amalgamated into the Royal Logistic Corps).

The Fellowship was

created for all tradesmen to have a common link and an annual reunion, of which this year is the 25th anniversary.

Brian Crago is an exVS soldier himself, who retired from the service in 1992, and was then employed by the MOD at Ashchurch from 1993

“The museum was created to save artefacts and photographs from around the world, depicting the logistical supply of military vehicles by the civilian and military work forces,” Brian told us.

“The museum displays the historical information from the conception of Ashchurch through the American occupation, prisoners of war usage, up to returning the facility to British MOD use.

“The collection has been brought together from sources around the world. Some highlights include the flag which was taken down as the Americans departed, (pictured above), and the uniforms of two Americans who served at Ashchurch. The oldest artefact is a Tripod from 1914.”

The museum also holds photographs of the Freedom Parades of Tewkesbury, as well as military images from Belgium, Germany, the Holy Land and the Far East.

The Vehicle Specialist Federation is currently trying to raise the awareness of its collection, and is currently in talks (being steered by the Vicar of Tewkesbury Abbey) with the local Historical Society and Severn Trent about possible relocation.

NEW WOMEN’S RUNNING CLUB FOR TEWKESBURY A new ladies’ running club has been set up in Tewkesbury, aimed in particular at those who are new to the sport.

Run by Debbie Hawtin and Maria Dispirito, who are both qualified Run England Running Leaders, the group will start training on Sunday March 17th.

The aim is to establish a ten week course, with a goal of being able to run three miles upon completion. The instructors will focus on teaching group members to run correctly and safely, with an emphasis on healthy living lifestyles. Runner Jude Dayne is training hard to be at the peak of fitness when she tackles a fifty mile ‘ultra’ run to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

Jude, who lives in Overbury, near Tewkesbury, is a freelance hairdresser and will be taking part in the event for the third year running. She is hoping to raise £3,000 for St Richard’s.

St Richard’s Hospice provides free specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and supports their families. Each year the hospice team supports over 2,300 patients and family members in Worcestershire.

“I wanted to fundraise for St Richard’s because I see how much they help so many people in so many ways, said Jude. "I will be running the miles for them. The Malvern ultra is a wonderful course through beautiful countryside and I meet such nice people along the way.

There’s always a sandwich and encouraging words.”

She added, “My

Jude Dayne biggest challenge is to try and raise as much money as I can and to

finish before the moon comes up!”

The Malvern Hills Ultra is the equivalent of almost two marathons with 8500ft ascent from top to bottom which includes the Malverns and Ankerdine Hill.

Jude will have trained for four months before the event (on Saturday 4th May), including six road runs of 25 miles each and lots of endurance work.

FOODBANK OPENS ITS DOORS Tewkesbury Foodbank is opening its doors on Saturday 6th April to provide emergency food and short term support to local people in crisis.

The project which has its collection centre based at Holy Trinity Church Hall in Oldbury Road, is a collaborative venture between churches in Tewkesbury.

The opening has only been possible through the hard work of a team of volunteers and with the generous support of local businesses and community groups who have offered premises, skills, equipment and services in kind.

The busiest winter on record for Severn Maritime Volunteers Unit Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service have had the busiest Winter on record for call outs, since the floods began in November.

Just when members had cleaned and put away their training boats for the Winter, the floods arrived and they had to be launched again in a hurry.

They were called out to give assistance a number of times at Tewkesbury Marina, Tewkesbury Sailing Club and the town moorings as well as clearing lots of debris from around the arches of King John's Bridge.

Head of unit, Nic Price said, “The floods seem

to have been incessant since November, and the main problems have been caused when the river levels start to drop.

“There is a real danger that boats on fixed moorings down in the Town can get caught up on their landing stages and posts and we have been called out several times to free these” The Unit is always pleased to welcome new members: call Head of Unit Nic Price on 07814 913995 for full details.

ANNUAL ROTARY CONCERT SET FOR ABBEY Tewkesbury Rotary Club’s Annual Charity Concert will be held on Saturday 23rd March at Tewkesbury Abbey.

The concert will once again feature the Gloucestershire Youth Orchestra with two of the young musicians taking prominent roles as soloists.

Rebecca McNaught, a finalist in the nationwide Rotary Young Musician competition in 2012, will be the soloist in the Haydn Cello concerto and Charles Gurnham, a past leader of the orchestra, will play the Abbey’s Milton Organ in Saint-Saens Organ Symphony.

The concert will support the Rotary Club’s charity fund which is helping many local deserving causes.

Over town, hill and vale This month’s view from Jack Boskett’s aerial tour of Tewkesbury shows the old town and the broad Vale of Gloucester beyond.

At the bottom left are boats in the Marina (1) on the Avon, just north of the point where the river is joined by Carrant Brook (2). The modern bridge nearby spans the water along the line of the old railway - part of the old bridge can also be seen.

In the centre of the photograph (3) is Spring Gardens and Cascades Leisure Centre, and somewhat detached from the town across the flood plain are the modern housing developments at the Wheatpieces and Walton Cardiff (4). To the right of this is Prior’s Park (5) with the Stonehills estate beyond.

The western scarp of the Cotswold hills is on the horizon, looking south-east towards Painswick and Haresfield beacons (6).

The medieval bulk of the abbey is at point (7) and the ham still bears the signs of the recent floods.

Waters remain here (8) long after the river levels have returned to normal. The Old Avon wends its way towards the Severn (9) which can just be seen at the far right of the photograph (10).

She made vivid the gloomy prospect of life without birdsong. But have her warnings been

Fifty years on, Conor Mark Jameson reflects on the growth of environmentalism since Silent Spring in his own book, ‘Silent Spring Revisited’. In his talk, Conor will explore the wildlife conservation sitsince 1962, uation drawing upon his experiences and observations from two decades of working in the field, as well as attempting to answer the important question: are we silencing the spring?

The Cove

1918 America: brother and sister, war veteran Hank, and Laurel live in "The Cove", an isolated gully, which local legend says is cursed. They are ostracised by the neighbouring town, especially Laurel who is thought to be a witch.

Laurel finds Walter playing the flute in the woods.

She nurses him back to health. Hank initially suspicious gradually accepts him and they work together mending fences building a new well, featured pointedly at the start of the book.

As this trio establish a routine and relationships develop the reader learns more about Walter and his past and how this will influence their lives and those of their local townsfolk.

SUNDAY WORKING A recent decision of the Employment Appeal Tribunal upheld an Employment Tribunals decision that a requirement for all full-time staff to work on Sundays in rotation did not indirectly discriminate against Christians, writes David Bloxham.

The employee, a Christian, was employed as a Children’s Care Worker under a contract which required her to work on Sundays. After two years of accommodating her wish to abstain from Sunday shifts owing to her Christian beliefs, the employer required their employee to work as contractually obliged.

The employee refused and disciplinary action followed which resulted in the employee being issued with a final written warning.

The employee resigned, claiming that the requirement to work Sundays amounted to a provision, criteria or practice that discriminated against Christians, and her, on the grounds of religion or belief under the Equality Act 2010.

The Tribunal concluded that the employer’s wish to ensure an appropriate gender balance on each shift, an appropriate seniority mix, a cost

effective service in the face of budgetary constraints, fair treatment of all its staff and continuity for the children being cared for, to which the employee’s contractual provisions were directed, was legitimate and reasonable.

This case establishes a point of principle, but it must be remembered that individual cases will turn upon their particular facts and that in those circumstances it would always be prudent to seek legal advice before taking decisive action within a potential employment dispute.

CO-OPTED COUNCILLORS AND VOLUNTEERS to help out and assist with special projects In addition to the main council business such as liaison with our local borough and county councillors on matters of concern, we operate as a number of committees.

The following gives a flavour of the areas of work that each committee covers: The LIAISON COMMITTEE works on a number of activities aimed at greater engagement with the community. This covers the council’s main communications such as the production of the quarterly newsletter and maintenance of the website.

The ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE works with our litter picking contractor to improve the estate by reducing the litter because this is one of the major concerns of residents. Our gardeners look after the gardens next to the Community Centre. The committee is working with our Borough and County Councillors to overcome the issues with overgrown shrubbery on the estate and on road adoption issues.

COMMUNITY CENTRE COMMITTEE The Community Centre is at the heart of our community, offering an outstanding venue to host a wide variety of events and activities to cater for all age groups. It boasts a main hall, two large meeting rooms and a fully refurbished kitchen with cooking facilities. The committee works with a management company to ensure that the centre is fit for purpose, and a venue the community can be proud of both now and for future generations.

Luke’s new business in focus Graduate Luke Shervey, from Aston-on-Carrant, has decided to put his degree to good use by setting up his own photography business in Tewkesbury.

The former Tewkesbury School pupil studied entertainment technology at the University of Portsmouth, embracing all aspects of photography and video production.

Luke graduated and initially worked for the homeless team with Gloucester City Council, but after his hours were cut he decided to embark upon his new venture.

“A growing number of people are now going self employed and I am one of them trying to make my dream of working for myself a reality,” said Luke.

His creative approach to photography lends itself to a variety of applications.

“I have travelled extensively and love photographing people and the world which they live in.

Recently refurbished Gym & Tonic, based at Croft Farm Leisure Centre in Tewkesbury has set its members a challenge to combat the seasonal blues, and complete the 3500km of the Tour de France on one of the gym’s exercise bikes.

Owner, Chris Warren said “As part of the gym’s new look, we are trying to put on fun challenges to encourage a bit of healthy competition amongst our members and the Tour de France is just the first of many.

“We have a large map of the route on our wall and members taking part in the challenge, can choose a bike to put on the map and watch it travel the Tour de France route as they complete legs of it each time they visit the gym.”

Crowing about Tewkesbury Over the past four years The Roving Crows have become one of Gloucestershire’s most successful acts in any genre.

But few people know that it was Tewkesbury that put the Crow into The Roving Crows.

The Crows scooped two awards at the 2012 IMA ceremony - ‘Top Celtic Rock Band’ and ‘Top Fiddle Player’.

The Roving Crows Their album ‘Bacchanalia’, launched to a sold out Guildhall in Gloucester, received rave reviews and is fast selling out of its first print.

By late 2008 Paul O’Neill, and Caitlin Barrett had spent eighteen months performing on the local scene and had decided a bigger, more original sound would be better suited to their new material For six months they debated back and forth over the title of the band, until Caitlin’s father Keith told them about his friend Len Clatworthy , who had said that if he were ever to start a group he would call it ‘Dorcas Crow’ after an old grave stone he had come in Tewkesbury.

Barrett and O’Neill liked the Crow end of the story, as in Celtic folklore the Crow is symbolically both mystical and positive.

The name has brought great fortune to the band, as they have received national radio play on both the Paul O’Grady and Mike Harding shows.

They will be returning to the famous Rockfield Studios in Monmouth to record their second album later this year.

You can catch The Roving Crows this month when they return to Gloucester Guildhall on Saturday 16th March.

AND SO IT BEGINS...

With the onset of spring and the prospect of warmer weather (hopefully!) our attention at Vale Wildlife Hospital turns to the imminent influx of youngsters and calls about baby birds and mammals in trouble, writes Caroline Gould.

We are currently preparing the hospital for the first of the mammal youngsters of the year that we have to deal with, fox cubs.

The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) has been around for hundreds of thousands of years. The earliest fossil specimens were uncovered in Barany in Hungary dating from between 3.4 and 1.8 million years ago.

Fox cubs can be born as early as February, although the majority are born through March and some in April.

Following a gestation period of 51-53 days, 45 cubs (average) are born blind, deaf and helpless, totally reliant on the parents for the first few weeks of life.

Initially they look nothing like their adult counterparts as they have very blunt, rounded faces and they lack the beautiful red coat of adult foxes, instead having a dark, chocolatebrown woolly coat.

Their eyes open when they are 10-14 days old.

Fox cubs don’t begin to emerge from their earth until they are around four weeks old and this

around the time they start to develop the red fur. The vixen and other group members will bring food back for the cubs once they start venturing out from underg r o u n d although they continue to s u c k l e from the vixen right through until the end of June. At this point all feeding stops and the cubs have to learn how to hunt for themselves.

Most of the fox cubs that we rear at Vale each year end up with us because of human interference in some way: orphaned following road traffic accidents, disturbed earths during building work, road construction or gardening

work. In previous years we have reared cubs from only one or two days old although a majority of our annual intake come to us when they are 34 weeks old or more as they are more likely to get into difficulties once they are old enough to be out of the earth. The rearing and rehabilitation process takes around six months in total and making sure that the cubs don’t become imprinted (so used to humans that they lose their natural fear of them and become reliant on them for their survival) is the most important and most difficult part of the process.

Cubs are released into

the wild on private land with landowners permission during the late summer or early autumn which is the time that cubs will be dispersing from the family group in the wild.

It is worth remembering that foxes are wild animals and should be treated as such. In urban areas they are often encouraged to take food closer and closer to the house; sometimes they are even coaxed inside to feed. and obviously, once comfortable about entering one house it is likely that they will wander into other houses given the opportunity.

A member of the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society has recently acquired an interesting item reputed to be linked to the battle, and is appealing to local people for information.

The object is a sword hilt (pictured above).

The person he bought it from says that it was reported to have been discovered in 1988 near the village of Deerhurst, by an old river crossing used by defeated Lancastrians as they tried to flee the aftermath of the battle of Tewkesbury.

It has passed through three sets of hands since being found, apparently by a dog walker.

The hilt has been examined by an expert from the Wallace Collection in London, and confirmed to date from the fourteenth or early fifteenth century so it is of the right period to have been used in the battle.

The sword has been broken, and according to the expert it was broken in use, rather than being deliberately destroyed.

This makes the possibilities very intriguing!

If the story is true, then this is a unique and important artefact.

If anyone can remember it being found, or knows the person who found it, the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society would love to hear from them. This would add greatly to the societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s knowledge of the battle.

The company was granted planning permission to carry out this work in July 2012.

Providing an update on the plans, Severn Trent Water’s senior planning advisor Gareth Smith, said: “Last week we met again with local land owners to finalise the details of land access and compensation involved with delivering this scheme.

“Right now we are also working through planning conditions and it is hoped that both tasks will be completed to allow us to deliver the scheme early this summer.”

Commenting on the next steps, Gareth says: “Thanks to an agreement with local landowners, who are very keen to help us get this scheme delivered swiftly, we started on 18th February to prepare the area to allow our work to begin this summer.

“This involves us clearing shrubs and trees before the bird nesting season begins.

Work on the old railway embankment take approximately two weeks to complete.”

Severn Trent Water will be contacting the local community with more information about the flood defence scheme as soon as plans are finalised.

“Our contactors, Costain are carrying out the work on our behalf and they have made contact with residents who are closest to the treatment works.

Bad weather has affected construction of the two giant horses, which when complete, will flank the Stonehills roundabout entrance to Tewkesbury.

The ‘Arrivall’ sculptures are currently being crafted in the Forest of Dean by Phil Bews, who is now making good progress despite set backs caused by the rain and snow.

The torso of a knight (pictured) was mounted on one of the horses recently - the finished articles will stand at just under six metres tall.

Tewkesbury Battlefield Society has been raising money for the Stonehill sculptures for several years now and weather permitting,

Arrivall Sculpture in production plans are in the pipeline for their erection prior to the thirtieth medieval festival this summer.

Why is that? Put very simply, the culprit is ‘TIME’- or rather, the lack of it. The explosion in technology; the advances made in all manner of things from transport to media, to convenience, on-line shopping and communication, has made us all very busy bees and the more we have, the more we seem to need.

Now all of these things shorten our day, but also shorten our ‘down time’, when we should be relaxing and unwinding, but there’s always something else to do; more happening – and that involves ‘TIME’.

But let’s just concentrate on the one all consuming thing that has become so important to us – ‘mobility’ and by that I mean transport, particularly cars and how they’ve changed our lives.

The main problem is: we all rely on our cars far too much. Read that again everybody, because it’s true!

Think about it – and if you’re over the age of 35, think back to when you were a kid; how much did your parents use their car(s)?

I’ll tell you – a lot less than we do today!

Believe it or not, far more of us used pushbikes, public transport, or simply walked to our work place than we do today. So: less traffic, more space, more time to react, which meant less congestion, fewer frayed tempers and a

If you listen to the radio in the morning or during the day, inevitably, on comes ‘Sally Traffic’ to tell us there’s an accident causing delays here and a motorway’s blocked there – and someone’s just called in to say another pile-up’s taken place.

Thirty years ago, ‘Sally Traffic’ didn’t exist. ‘Easy’ you say, ‘Greater traffic volume, more accidents – bound to happen, isn’t it?’…. Is it? I disagree.

We all have familiar journeys that we undertake on a regular basis – and we all know exactly how long that journey takes if all goes according to plan, so that’s the time we almost always allow for the trip; simple.

But, what if there’s a problem and all our precise timing goes out of the window? We try to make up the time somewhere en-route and that’s when things go wrong.

Everyone who knows me, will also know that I’m one of the most impatient drivers on the planet.

I hate delays, jams and TRAFFIC LIGHTS – I

have a particular aversion to! The proliferation of these mindless flashing manikins, often create more problems than they’re intended to solve – and if the new Sainsbury development gets going on the A46, no doubt the planners will insist on erecting a load more to add to the misery.

Why oh why can’t we have little roundabouts – the best invention ever?

A simple piece of road work which regulates traffic flow, reduces speed, but doesn’t bring everything to a standstill and doesn’t use electricity.

In France, they’ve removed lights and

replaced them with roundabouts all over the country; someone over there has clearly seen the light. (Excuse the pun).

So, what have I done?

Well, I’ve left the car at home. I now walk to work; it’s just over 1¼ miles and takes about twenty minutes – and guess what?

After a couple of months of doing so, I feel better, both mentally and physically, I can answer and make calls on my way without having to take my eyes off the road ahead – and the best bit of all; I’ve lost nearly two inches off my waist line! You should try it!

DISCUSSIONS ON M5 JUNCTION WILL BE HELD Tewkesbury Borough Council is co-ordinating a special meeting to discuss the options for junction 10 of the M5.

The Highways Agency has indicated the bridge over the junction needs to be replaced, and local organisations, businesses and residents have called for it to be made into a four way junction at the same time due to the benefits it would bring to local businesses and communities.

A date for the meeting is still to be finalised but it will involve representatives from The Highways Agency, Cheltenham Borough Council, Gloucester City Council, Gloucestershire Highways, Gloucester-shire Local Enterprise Partnership, as well as the MP for Tewkesbury Laurence Robertson and the MP for Cheltenham Martin Horwood.

Leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council Cllr Robert Vines said: “The aim of this meeting is to get all interested parties around one table to discuss the future plans for this junction.

MP for Tewkesbury Laurence Robertson added: “I am pleased to see that Tewkesbury Borough Council is taking the lead on bringing everyone together to discuss this issue.

COMMUNITY CLEAN UP Those who have the trials and tribulations of working outdoors will understand that your local policing team, and this article, pay what may seem to be a disproportionate amount of attention to the weather, writes Sergeant Matt Puttock.

There are lots of reasons why; it can mean a potential rise in accidents or collisions on our roads, it can make all the difference when we are searching through the night for a lost or missing person.

It can be brutal when we are on our critical but sometimes less obvious duties – whether on late night foot patrol, guarding a crime scene, trying to coerce a horse from the road back to a field or looking after people at the roadside following an accident, the difference of driving rain and sub-zero degrees against a warm summer evening is huge!

Unfortunately for us, crime doesn’t stop in the depths of cold winter nights, and some fine work from your local team this week is a great example.

A local resident reported suspected poaching with dogs on their land, a crime that is contrary to laws more than 180 years old, the Night Poaching Act 1828.

Often perpetrators of these crimes are gone quickly before we can get there, and choose the middle of the night and

Three males from out of the area were arrested on suspicion of poaching, and many related items seized – with the dogs suitably cared for. I will update you in a future

On a more collaborative note, our community officers have been helping out with a really good project.

Last month saw local youths working with the police, school staff, Tewkesbury Borough Council and Fairshares Project, and with the assistance of the fire service they worked hard to clean up and paint the skate park in Northway.

This was part of a pilot scheme to get young people more involved in their community. Whilst doing the work the young people

were earning points under the fairshare scheme which they could then use to buy a trip to an indoor skatepark in Bristol that was arranged shortly after.

It is hoped that should the pilot be deemed a success then young people will be encouraged to sign up to fairshares and work on similar projects in the future.

The instructor, Olly Leonard, currently teaches Tai Chi in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Bishop’s Cleeve. Classes are informal and open to all ages and abilities.
