THAT SINKING FEELING? The sink hole phenomenon seems to have reached Tewkesbury, as the ground has opened up mysteriously in one of the town’s historic alleyways. The hole, which measures approximately nine feet deep by six feet wide, was discovered in Clark's Alley last month - and the cause remains a mystery. Theories discussed on the internet suggest that it could be an old well which had been covered over. But the walls of the hole seem to consist largely of soil, descending to an alluvial bed of sand and gravel at the bottom. There is no apparent brick or stonework that you would expect to find in a man-made well. At the time of writing the cause remains a mystery. Should the reason be found we will report it in next month’s magazine.

Ancient Malthouse to be restored The first stage of renovation work has started on a property in East Street which includes a sixteenth century Malthouse. Stage one involves the creation of a small dwelling in an out building that forms the gateway to the Malthouse yard. The restoration of the Malthouse itself will be in History revealed: The Malthouse phase two. The two storey building still has the asphalt drying floors intact and is another of Tewkesbury's survivors from times gone by.

Jack also captured this view over the town towards a misty Bredon Hill (below).

PUBLIC CONSULTATION ON ADDING NAMES TO WAR MEMORIAL A working party consisting of Councillors (the Town Council being official custodian) and local people has been coordinating events to commemorate the 1914-1918 War. John Dixon, of Tewkesbury Historical Society, said: “Part of the climax to these events - focusing very much on the local loss of life – is to review the accuracy of the names displayed on the Town’s War Memorial at the Cross and to add names of any inadvertently omitted at the time. The Historical Society book, Noble Band of Heroes, reveals the biographies of all the people behind the names but, in researching it, we realised that there were omissions. “Few records have survived revealing how decisions were made but the process was clear. We are replicating that by firstly consulting the public. Once we

The War Memorial at its unveiling have received responses, we shall secondly present the proposed names.to the Town Council. “The War Memorials Trust presents challenging criteria for inclusion:

• People in military service within defined periods: Tewkesbury, however, took more time and so we are following practice at the time – 4 August 1914 to 31 December 1925 and 3 September 1939 to 28 February 1955; • People who died after 1918 and 1945, but in the defined periods above, of wounds or illness attributed to war service. However, this link has to be proven. • Certain civilian roles can be included e.g. VAD and Home Guard • They had been a citizen of the Parish of Tewkesbury and not commemorated on official Memorials in other parishes. Further expansion for Clearway

TEWKESBURY BLINDS & CURTAINS

Local door and window specialists Clearway have expanded their business operations with the group acquisition of Designex Cabinets Ltd. Established in 1983, Clearway Doors and Windows have been installing windows and doors for over thirty years, growing from a small, two-man business to its present size. As a thriving double glazing company with specialist manufacturing facilities in Cheltenham, Clearway employ more than thirty people, including sales, manufacturing, surveying and installation experts. Designex Cabinets specialise in bespoke display units for retail outlets, exhibitions, business and private collectors. Clearway’s managing director Jeremy Phillips, who lives in Bredon, said: “Designex have set new standards in showcases with their latest generation of aluminium framed glass showcases. “Sleek and stylish, incredibly strong and robust, they are ideal for both commercial and domestic situations. “Made to order by a

specialist team of craftsmen, the units are selfsupporting and secure. They feature toughened safety glass, with the option of solid, glass or mirrored backs and halogen or LED lighting.”

Designex Cabinet Clearway Doors & Windows specialise in aluminium products, so Designex integrates perfectly into their operation. Clearway will offer a standard range of cabinets to customers, as well as providing a bespoke service. There is a choice of woods and finishes, with a wide range of colours available by powder coating the aluminium at manufacturing stage.

“These cabinets are rigid, robust and stylish, said Jeremy. “Although they are ideal for shop and museum displays, they also look elegant in the home to display porcelain, silverware and other collectables. There is direct integral shelf support and cabinets are lockable for high security.” Clearway Doors and Windows continue to sponsor Bredon Rugby Club, who are currently doing well in Gloucester League One, where they compete against Tewkesbury. The company helped with the refurbishment of Bredon’s club house, and has an ongoing agreement for shirt sponsorship. In recent weeks Clearway have also sponsored the first XV’s new kit bags. Clearway’s showrooms are at Manor park Business Centre in Cheltenham GL51 9TX. For further information visit www.clearwaydoorsandwindows.co.uk or call 01242 513322.

Next month at the award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway a 'Wartime in the Cotswolds' event will deliver an authentic experience life in the 1940s. Visitors can step back in time, pack up their troubles in their old kit bags and smile, smile, smile. A full weekend of nostalgic 1940s-themed activities is planned and everyone is invited to enjoy a stroll down memory lane. Wartime in the Cotswolds takes place on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April, the fifth event of its kind, which promises to be bigger and better than ever this year. Events will take place at both Toddington Station and in Winchcombe - where

King George VI, Winston Churchill and Field Marshal Montgomery will be addressing the public at 2pm on both days. In addition to an intensive steam service on the line, there will be classic cars and military vehicles in the main display areas - as well as a full size replica Spitfire. A vintage bus service will ferry passengers from Winchcombe station to the town for the events taking place there. Other attractions include military displays, a field hospital, an air-raid shelter experi-

ANIMAL MATTERS by Vale Wildlife Rescue

SARCOPTIC MANGE IN URBAN FOXES Over the winter of 2016/2017 Vale Wildlife Rescue received a large number of calls from people concerned about the condition of the foxes visiting their garden, often describing them as ‘balding’, ‘scabby’ or having ‘weepy eyes’, all of which are potential symptoms of Sarcoptic mange. Usually but not always, these calls are from urban areas, Vale’s nearest large urban fox population being in Cheltenham. Mange can be spread easily in urban environments where foxes live in more concentrated populations than in rural areas. It can have devastating consequences for whole populations. We are never too hasty in forming a diagnosis, bald patches could be the consequence of an injury, whilst discharge from the eyes could be the result of infection or injury. To help us with confirming a diagnosis of mange we will ask the caller if they are able to send us a photo of the fox via email. Sarcoptic mange is a condition caused by the mite Sarcoptes Scabiei, which burrows under the skin of the host causing intense discomfort and itching. Seriously infected foxes will suffer from substantial fur loss, whilst the combination of waste matter produced by the mites, and the exudate caused as the result of wounds created by incessant scratching, forms a thick ‘crust’ on the skin. As the disease progress, the fox suffering with mange is likely to display abnormal behaviours in its desperation to find food and stay warm. Left untreated, foxes with advanced symp-

toms of the disease will be prone to systemic infection, hypothermia, starvation and ultimately death.

Sarcoptic Fox Mange

When the cause of the fox’s condition is confirmed as mange we encourage the caller to immediately establish a feeding routine. The infected fox will need to be fed in the same place and at the same time every day to afford us the opportunity treat it. A fox with any mobility at all will always be extremely difficult to catch, therefore this routine is an essential component in providing treatment and ensuring that we only treat the target animal. Once the feeding routine is established we can either set a humane trap to allow us catch the fox and bring it back to the Hospital for treatment, or in less serious cases the fox may be treated ‘at scene’. Foxes treated at the Hospital will be administered ‘Stronghold’ on

admission, an effective, topical anti-parasitic treatment, alongside antibiotics to fight subsequent infections. Further doses of Stronghold will be administered every seven days for up to 3 weeks, depending on the severity of the individual’s condition. When the treatment regime has been completed and the fox has

regrown enough fur to allow it to stay warm, it will be returned to its own territory. If you are concerned that a fox visiting your garden may be suffering from mange, please try to take a photograph of it and email to info@valewildlife.org.uk You can call us for more advice between 7am and 5pm on 01386 882288.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

For richer, for poorer Many years ago , in a country not far from ours, there was a boy, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater.

His family was very wealthy. The father was a wealthy factory owner and his factories made some of the most expensive cars that one can buy. He was very, VERY rich. The father was a wise man. He didn't want his son to grow up thinking that the whole world had the luxury that his family was able to enjoy. He wanted him to have a far more balanced view of life. He wanted him to learn appreciation but he wanted this appreciation to come to the child in a natural way rather than being “forced” into him One day his father took him on a trip into the country. It was here that he aimed to show his son just how poor people actually live. After an hour or so driving the father and his son arrived at a farm of a very poor family, as generally considered. They stayed with the farmer and his family there for several days. It wasn't until their return to their own house in the city that the father asked his son if he had actually liked or even enjoyed the trip as it had been such a major change from his usual, every day life “It was great, dad !” –the boy replied without any hesitation at all. He wasn't saying that just to please his father. It was obvious that he actually meant what he said. “So, did you actually notice how poor people live?” asked his dad. “Oh Yeah, I did “ said the boy. The father then asked his son to tell him in more details about his feelings from their trip. “ There's quite a lot I noticed, actually,” said the boy. “To start with we have only one dog, and they have four of them. I noticed that straight away. “In our garden there is a pool, while they have a river that flows through their farm and I have no idea where it flows but I know that in the end it reaches the sea. “We‘ve got expensive lanterns and the streets are all brightly lit by electric lights. They didn't have any lights like this but they have the whole sky full of stars above their heads at night.

“We have the patio, and they have the fields which seem to reach out from the farm and reach the horizon. “We have only a small piece of land, while they have the endless fields. “We buy food, but they grow it. “We have high walls, fences and security cameras to protect our property but they don‘t need it, as their friends protect them. They all look after each other. They are all there to help each other when help is needed, and they don't just do it to get more money in the bank. They do it because they care.”

The father was totally gob-smacked. He was totally speechless. Unusual for him ! His mind was racing .He could not say a word. He felt excited because his experiment seemed to be having a worthwhile result. It actually turned out better than he may have imagined or hoped for. It was then that the boy said something remarkable. “Thank you, dad, for letting me see how poor we are!” So what does this story tell us? Is it relevant to us where we are today? Well, Yes it is ! It has an important message to tell us. It tells us

that true wealth as well as happiness are not measured by materials things alone as so many have been brought up to expect and believe. Love, friendship, care and freedom are far more valuable. Do you think the same as me when you read this? My goodness me – How wealthy I am when compared to so many. It is so important to value and appreciate what we have rather than lust after what we may want ( yet not even need ). Stand back ! Look at what YOU have and be grateful ! David Slater

During the night of Tuesday 7th February, a strange aircraft noise was heard repeatedly circling in the cloudy sky over North Gloucestershire. The sound was unlike any jet or propeller powered craft and was more akin to an electrical droning noise which grew and faded as it followed its flight path. The activity was heard for several hours and needless to say there was a flurry of comments and explanations from people who had heard the sound from across North Gloucestershire and South Worcestershire on social media the following day. The writer has not heard an aircraft engine sound like this before and suggests that it would be a new propulsion system that was making the noise. If you heard the noise and you know what the type of aircraft was, that was making the sound, do let us know by emailing us at tewkesburydirect@googlemail.com.

TAG Estate Agents Advert 23/02/2017 10:20 Page 1

Chain Gang One of the least understood or appreciated aspects of a good Estate Agents role takes place after a sale is agreed, the period between offer acceptance and exchange of contracts. Chain management is crucial for the sanity of our clients and is the reason that TAG have always employed a dedicated sales coordinator whose role it is to liaise with all participants in a chain, which, by definition, can only move at the speed of it’s slowest link. There are a number of reasons why it takes what seems an age to move in the current system, local searches take around 3 weeks in GL20 but in a chain that involves a participant moving to or from another area that timeframe could be 6 weeks, or 2 weeks. Time taken processing applications for mortgage finance will vary from lender to lender, a survey on a property twice removed from your bit of the chain might throw up an issue VENDORS NAME ADDRESS SOLICITOR AGENT requiring specialist reports such as damp, timber treatment AGREED: SURVEY: LENDER: or electrics so there’s the time taken getting those in and possibly renegotiating thereafter. Then there are social Vacating ( Moving to USA ) reasons which might factor in, availability of annual leave, a pre booked holiday, an unexpected (and unwelcome) AGREED: NA SURVEY: NA LENDER: NA episode of poor health, a wedding, the availability or Firerain Legal 28 Rolling Deep Pavements otherwise of friends or relatives to help move, all of these Ms Adele Mr Chasing London 0207 222222 0207 333333 examples and many many more will be given as an explanation as to why an individual can or can’t do any AGREED: 24.01 SURVEY: 03.02 LENDER: Cayman 100% LTV given date. So who pulls all this together? Well, your solicitor should be able to give you a clear picture of your sale and purchase but they wont be able to go any further than that, a significant problem at the top of a chain will still leave the solicitor at the base of the chain in blissful ignorance where they are several steps removed. Yes it has been known that a sort of cascade of information can flow from one solicitor to another throughout a chain but the pace is glacial and rarely detailed, usually couched in such terms as the other side is ‘ Not Ready ‘.

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society

TEWKESBURY’S MOST NOTORIOUS ALLEYWAY Next time you have a tedious wait for a bus here, revert in your imagination sixty years and more you will be outside what John Moore described as the “yawning jaws of hell”, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society. He was referring to the entry to the most notorious alley in Tewkesbury: Double Alley. Alleys could change their name depending on the name of the owner of the house on the frontage – thus it was been known as Harris’ in 1819, Castle’s in 1830 but, to take the edge off its reputation, it was renamed in 1929 as a much more respectable “Oldbury Walk”. John Rogers, the first Alley historian explained in 1905: it was “very old (and) so called because there were two entrances at the High Street end. A wall went up the middle of the alley in line with the four brick pillars which support part of the house ….. A long time ago the wall was removed to give light to the cottages on the right side”. It was a much neglected alley and five inhabitants died in the Cholera epidemics of 1832 and 1849. In 1857 it was advised that “to abate the nuisance (sewer) in Double Alley, it would be requisite to cover over a portion of the open drain”. In fact, water was piped to the Alley by 1878. Nevertheless, the water problem persisted intermittently since, in 1921, “nine houses owned by several owners have defective and insanitary w.c.s”. It had its own pub, the "Sailors' Return” and one of the owners was relatively prosperous, although his reputation was as infamous as his alley. Richard Green, born in 1848, was a drover whose home was five-roomed to accommodate his wife and nine children. He was frequently in conflict with the law committing such offences as assaulting a policeman and “racing on horseback in the High Street”. By 1915, however, he was respectable enough to have his Golden Wedding notified in the newspaper. The front house was a butcher in the late 19th century until Richard Green bought it as a dairy. In 1939 the Wiggins family were voters there. By the time of the 1957 photo, it was virtually derelict. Clearance was proposed in 1936 yet 10 adults lived there in 1939 (five of them Woodwards!) and a child still died there as late as 1959. ‘Old Contemptible’ Harry Pope celebrated his Golden Wedding there in 1958. Now the alley and its people have been swept away to accommodate a small part of the Boots the Chemist. Of course it is much more hygienic – but not as historically romantic! John Dixon

2017, which is fantastic, but that still leaves £250,000 which is needed and which must be raised before the share issue closes on 30 April 2017. “We are seeking to raise these final funds from our normal supporters, that is, our members and volunteers, our shareholders and the general public interested in railways. “This is very much a community project and support from the local community is greatly appreciated. “The President of the Heritage Railway Association, Lord Faulkner of Worcester, has gone on record as saying that every £1 spent by passengers on a Heritage Railway creates a further £2.70 spent in the local community, i.e. in restaurants, hotels, B&Bs and so on. “With a turnover of £1.8million you can readily see that our railway makes a substantial contribution to the local community, a contribution which is likely to grow dramatically when we reach Broadway. “To support the GWSR you can buy shares or make a donation to the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Trust (GWRT). “For shares, the minimum purchase is of 100 shares which cost £100. This level of shareholding gives the shareholder three free travel vouchers (each currently worth £17) every year for ever!” Share application forms may be downloaded from the website, www.gwsr.com, by calling 01242 621905 or by emailing development @gwsr.com The GWSR currently operates a 24 mile round trip, with travel possible from Toddington, Winchcombe and Cheltenham Racecourse stations. The line passes through a 690 yard tunnel and Greet, and over a fifteen arch viaduct at Stanway. Passenger services start for the season on Saturday 4th March. For timetables, tickets and information, visit the website www.gwsr.com

This book should give a lot of readers great pleasure with the musicality of the title not explained until the closing pages, and while music is a feature throughout the storyline it is about two boys growing up in Switzerland with the story told appropriately in three parts. Gustav Perle meets Anton Zwiebel at preschool in 1947, in Matzlingen where most of the book is based. Gustav is from a poor home, his widowed mother a bitter woman who he adores. Anton comes from an affluent Jewish background, his father a Banker moved to the small town for health reasons. Anton finds settling down in his new surroundings hard, but his one escape is playing the piano where he is a bit of a prodigy. How their friendship develops, over the years, a Zwiebel family holiday in the spa town of Davos, long before it's present luxury status, provide an overview of Swiss life after the war, but from two very contrasting households. In the second part the story moves back to 1937, Gustav's father is still alive, and we learn how his parents meet, marry and start out with a good lifestyle befitting an Assistant Police Chief. The war, and the external pressures on Swiss neutrality caused the downturn in their

prosperity. How Erich Perle died a"Hero" but in disgrace leaving his widow and son with no more than a bare wooden shelf as a kitchen table is elegantly told. Finally the third section has moved forward to 1992 and spans ten years where Gustav is a successful hotelier, and Anton has found some kind of musical peace as a school teacher, both of course still in Matzlingen. Their mothers are still dominant figures in the story-line, but a lot has changed since they were school friends. This novel was justifiably included in the Costa shortlist, losing our to Sebastian Barry's book which then went on to win the overall Costa prize awarded last month. I have to say I enjoyed them both enormously and would have been hard pushed to choose between these two, but neither was my book of the year! Selected by: Ian B. OWEN RESTORES A HIDDEN GEM Renovation work has been taking place at 38 High Street, by A G Boniface building contractors, and in a fireplace in an upstairs flat, behind a piece of hardboard, a late 19th Century cast iron cooking range was discovered. Also found, was a 1932 brochure for Belling electric fires, which, we surmise, came with the new heating appliance, chosen to replace the range. Spokesman, Paul Boniface told us that his son Owen took it upon himself to completely wire brush the range down and refinish it. So pleased they are with the discovery, that it will stay as a focal point in the flat, where many other period aspects will be retained, adding to the character of the flat.

2ND TEWKESBURY BROWNIES FUNDRAISING FOR SARA Last month, 2nd Tewkesbury Brownies presented a cheque to Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) after raising £188.98. Lisa Whitaker, Rob Wilson and Kris Mills, members of SARA visited the unit to accept the money raised by the girls. The money will contribute towards the purchase of new rescue rope equipment. They then stayed for the Brownie evening, teaching the girls about water safety here in Tewkesbury. To raise the money,

the Brownies walked around Priors Park with the Sleigh and Santa. The crew from SARA came along to help and did a great job towing the sleigh for Santa whilst Rudolph and friends had a rest. The Brownies along with SARA members walked through Priors Park wishing everyone a Happy Christmas and giving out sweets. The

Brownies had an enjoyable time and there was a real community feel about the night. Heather Caley, Brownie Leader said, “It was great to see the girls learning and helping SARA with this worthy course and I just want to say a very big thank you to SARA, all the Leaders, Brownies and Parents who helped us to raise the money”.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

PARIS IN THE SPRINGTIME Fancy an easy evening stroll and a pint now the lighter evenings are almost with us? Then consider a potter around Paris - one of Bredon Hill’s hidden gems, writes Jack B. Walker.

St Barbara’s Church, Ashton-under-Hill

Don’t worry: there are no queues for the Channel Tunnel or airport delays ahead on this route!

Our Paris is a quiet little spot on the lower slopes of Bredon Hill, just a short hop from

Ashton-under-Hill. Park your car in Ashton’s main street just beyond the First School (also accessible by 540 bus from Tewkesbury) and walk up the slope. Look out for Bakers Lane, which is the first turning on the left (1). Turn into it and follow the lane as it winds up the hill. Eventually it levels out and becomes a rough track. Keep straight ahead, ignoring the various footpaths to the left and right. The view to the left (foliage permitting) is

over St Barbara’s Church at Ashton and beyond it Dumbleton Hill and the Cotswolds (see photo). Eventually you will come to the cluster of houses which make up the tiny hamlet of Paris. On your left you will see the gateway to Bredon Springs. This was formerly an exotic garden open to the public - the former home of a botanist who discovered many unusual plants would grow here due to the warm fresh water springs. Walk ahead, ignoring the track to the right (2) and go down the stoney slope. At the bottom, look for a gap in the hedge and turn right (3) and go straight ahead on the footpath. Eventually you will come into a field. Go along the edge, keeping the hedge on your right, and over a footbridge. Head towards a farm gate next to some cottages, one of which was once a temporary home to a well-known writer of country walks! When you reach the lane (4) turn right and

Go over a stile and a stream, then up the bank and diagonally right. This path will bring you back to point (3). Bear right along the track and though a farm gate, following the way marker diagonally right to a gate (often left open), keep the perimeter on your right, with a

small pond (known as the Moat) behind it. When you reach the edge of the churchyard, go through the kissing gate (6) and carry on past the lovely old parish church. Dating back to the 1100s, it is one of only three churches in England dedicated to St Barbara. Go through the lych gate (7) and turn left. Pass the Star Inn(if you can!) and return to the car.

Tewlesbury s to get its very first ‘poetry slam’ this month, with an event at The Berkeley Arms at the Cross. A poetry Slam is a competitive form of poetry performance started in America by Marc Smith in 1984 and has since grown in popularity all over the world. It is judged either by a panel of judges or by the audience. Tewkesbury’s event is being organised by Ali Baxter, will be held on Friday 10th March at 7.30pm. Entry is free. “All forms of poetry are permissible and they can be funny, sad, ironic or just to get people thinking as long as they are not racist, homophobic, sexist or swear word filled rants, said Ali. “They must also be under three minutes long.

Ali says that established writers and poets are also welcome to come along to the event.

“As this is the first one I think i'll play it by ear and ask people to bring along their own work with the aim of further encouraging them to write and perform pieces on the night, from a selection of ‘random’ subjects suggested by the audience.”

䡵 CELEBRATE THE ALLEYS: a photographic competition celebrating Tewkesbury’s famous alleyways is now in progress, and is open to all amateur photographers. There are prizes in three age group categories (5-10, 11-16 and over 17 years old), and the closing date for entries is 30th March. Organised by Project Alleycat, all entries will be displayed at The Roses Theatre in April and May. For details see www.alleycat.org or visit www.rosestheatre.org

OUR ALLEYWAYS by Steve Goodchild

WARDER’S ALLEY

Warder’s Alley is one of Tewkesbury’s most used alleys, but one of the saddest. The entrance of the alley was destroyed when the High St frontage was pulled down to make way for a new Post Office. The alley was replaced by a brutal concrete tunnel through the Post Office building, now M& Co. On Oldbury Road, the streetscape was sacrificed to ‘in’ and ‘out’ drives to the sorting office, on either side of a retained and rather stranded house.

Richard Warder was a cordwainer (shoe maker) who lived in the demolished front house in the early nineteenth century. John Rogers remembers the alley from that period; ‘It is a very old alley and contains some old cottages, very small, like holes in the wall; very dark and gloomy and built mostly of timber and lath and plaster in the old Tewkesbury style’. An intriguing picture of times long gone. There is little written about Warder’s Alley, despite its age, because only life on the main streets is recorded, except for the occasional sale of properties. Nothing dramatic happened. In 1855, two ‘neat brick-built’ cottages, occupied by James Bray and Thomas Deveraux were sold by auction. There were problems reported by the health board and instructions given to resolve them. Mr White, who lived in Gloucester owned two cottages which he was instructed to repair because they were in a dangerous condition. He needed reminding, and threatening with ‘proceedings’. In 1885, a case of overcrowding was reported, where Richard Forth’s large family were crowded into a cottage with just one bedroom. No help was offered, just an order to do something about it. The problem was resolved, presumably with the help of friends and relatives. There were tragedies; Mr and Mrs Avery’s nine week old daughter died in the night, unexpectedly, of unknown causes. Compared with others, Warder’s Alley was quiet and well-behaved. There were occasional reports of illegal gambling, but little else to upset the equilibrium until 1922, when William Wilkins took to making regular drunken assaults on his wife. There was no wholesale demolition. The coop pulled some down to build a warehouse in 1914; a clearance order for others was made in 1938. In 1940, they were almost reprieved because of the acute housing shortage, but

were the only properties not considered suitable for repair and occupation. Demolition went ahead, though there were still some cottages occupied in the late nineteen-forties. The alley died slowly, but with the Post Office arrival it died almost completely. Project Alleycat wants

to bring some interest back to Warder’s Alley. We have had talks with County Highways about installing alley lighting (there isn’t any) and improvements to the pavement. More immediately we have a couple of surprises which we hope will bring a bit of joy to alley users.

WINTER WAR IN MESOPOTAMIA [IRAQ] 1917 – KUT AVENGED! The main attack on the Turks to avenge Kut had commenced on 14 December 2916. Progress was slow and success did not come until the capture of a fortress on 29 January 1917. By this time conscript Pte. H. G. Rowley [†], 7th Gloucesters, had been killed on 15 January. Conscript replacement Pte. Clarence Howell [†], 9th Worcesters, followed on 25 January, and then Pte. J. J. Parnell [†], 7th Gloucesters, on 10 February 1917. The bodies of Taylor, Mann and Howell were neither recovered nor identified; only their names are, therefore, commemorated on the Basra Memorial, along with 40,000 other Commonwealth soldiers. Rowley and Parnell were buried in Amara Cemetery, next to which was a hospital - so we can deduce that they died of either wounds or disease. None of these men were able to participate in the fall of Baghdad on 11 March 1917 when, at last, the Mesopotamian adventure seemed to be paying dividends. However, the fall of

Baghdad coincided with increased concerns about oil supplies – to the north at Mosul and, indeed, the oilfields of Baku on the Caspian Sea, which caused the loss of life of another Tewkesburian in 1918.

JUMBLE SALE Longdon Village Hall 18th March 12.00 - 14.00 Proceeds split between Midlands Air Ambulance and Village Hall Upkeep. 30p entry plus raffle, cakes/refreshments

Pupils at Tewkesbury’s Alderman Knight School have been making Bee houses that will provide homes for Solitary and Mason Bees. They are available to buy, for those who want to attract Bees to their gardens and at the same time, help the local Bee population. Solitary Bees do not live in hives like Honey Bees, and as such these man made houses make ideal homes. Local Florist, Jackie Dean has made over her shop window with a display of the houses that the students have made, and anyone wishing to attract more Bees to help pollinate their flower gardens can buy them from Jackie, at Bluebellwood Florists in Barton Street.

SECOND TEWKESBURY TRIATHLON AQUATHLON RESULT

TEWKESBURY FLOWER CLUB

Terry Ballard sent in this piece about an event that was more challenging than usual. It was a bitterly cold day for the second Tewkesbury Triathlon Club Aquathlon with the wind chill making the temperatures sub-zero for the 400m swim and 5k run. Nevertheless almost 40 hardy souls braved the conditions and posted some respectable times. Chris Gaskin kept it in the family by finishing first male overall in a time of 24:50 after his brother did not start due to injury. There was a welcome return by local competitor Eli Gibney who finished a second behind Chris. 1st male vet was Tim GudgeonOsterritterand (29:07)

and first male supervet was Mark Turton (25:20). 1st female home was Kate Miller (28:38). TTC's Ruth Johnstone (29:16) celebrated her birthday by winning the female vet category and Teresa Tranter (33:30) took first female supervet. The next event is scheduled for 12th March when hopefully the weather will be a little warmer! Picture Attached: Eli Gibney leaves the warmth of the swimming pool to begin his 5k run. If you would like to get into triathlon, the

Club will be running another of its popular 'Try a Tri' courses in March. The ten week course will guide you through the three disci-

When a gently widening river flows into an ocean an incoming high tide can arrive as a breaking wave and as the Severn has the second-highest tide in the world this can be a dramatic phenomenon as the river flows backwards. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We are really looking forward to the evening as we train up and down the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel and this chance to learn about the Severn Bore and about the gravitational affects

PHARMACY MATTERS by Peter Badham

Industry standards for tablets? To advertise on Tewkesbury Direct’s Consult the Experts Pages Please call 01242 621346 or email tewkesburydirect@googlemail.com UPHOLSTERY & CARPET CARE

imperial carpet care FRESHEN UP YOUR HOME

The question I am often asked by patients is "Why do my tablets change in colour and size and packaging?" -writes Peter Badham. I can fully understand patients concerns, it would be so much safer if there was an industry standard. The reason is that when a company develops a new medication, as a reward for their investment, they are given a patent, where for a period of years, they can be the only provider. This gives them a return on the huge sums

of money they have invested in research, and testing etc. At the end of this period, any other ethical company can copy the formula and bring out a lower cost alternative. From the NHS view, and your view as a tax payer, this saves an enormous amount of money looking forward. Whilst the medication content is the same, and the alternative products should therefore be as for most effective patients, there is no requirement to follow a colour, size or marking

WINDOW & GLAZING SERVICES

policy. There may be very slight changes in the bulking agents in the tablet or capsule, as an example, which might in a few patients alter the performance of their medication. Some of our patients find this an issue , which I can understand. I think more pressure needs to be applied to bring some standardisation into the industry. Not withstanding this, in our pharmacies we can record which brand a patient would prefer on their records, and we can try always to supply this brand. Please let us know if that is some-

䡵 Peter Badham thing we could help with? Sometimes we cannot source the brand a patient would like, but at least we can try.

Frederick Green: killed in 1918 but whose body was not discovered until 1925; ‘Worker’ Kathleen Sollis: died in the influenza pandemic while in service at Tredington Isolation Hospital; Pte. F. W. Taylor: died of ‘flu whilst serving in Bristol (lived in Newtown which was then Ashchurch but not commemorated on its memorial). “In recent research, we have discovered two men unknown in 1925: Pte. A. E. Fletcher, who disappeared in battle in Gallipoli on 8 August 1915 and Pte. F.G. Green, killed in 1916 but whose next of kin, a Tewkesbury girl, had married and moved to Winchcombe (where he is not commemorated). Also possible is Gunner Henry Knight who died of illness in 1920. He was not a native but is buried in the Town, where his wider family lived. “WWII: Homeguard Sgt. Arthur Hanlon, blown up by a faulty shell at Healings Mill during practice; Pte. John C. Cash, a POW camp guard in Scotland, who was killed in a motor cycle accident whilst off duty. In service but off duty causes problems – thus we feel that we ought to consider Pte. Collet and Sapper W E Portlock, killed and died respectively whilst home on leave. “We would like to hear from the public on these cases - and any others it feels were omitted. Detailed supporting information can be found on www.ths.freeuk.com (with a paper copy at the Town Hall). The deadline is 30th April 2017 so please contact me on johnhistory46@btinternet.com or write to me c/o the Town Clerk.” John Dixon

POLICE NOTES with Police Sgt Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police

CONTROLLING YOUR DOG IN A PUBLIC PLACE Every month we get several incidents reported where members of the public are bitten by dogs. The law relating to these offences are contained in the Dangerous Dogs Act, writes Police Sgt Henry Wright. The Act applies to every single person in charge of a dog in England and Wales and it is an offence to allow a dog to be “Dangerously out of control.” Generally if a dog bites a person, it will be presumed to have been “Dangerously out of control,” however even if the dog does not bite but gives the person grounds to feel that the dog may injure them, the law still applies. Another fact is that the law applies to private as well as public places so for example a postal worker or delivery person coming into your garden if injured could lead to the owner be prosecuted and the dog being seized. A summary of the legislation : It’s against the law to let a dog be dangerously out of control anywhere, such as: •in a public place •in a private place, eg a neighbour’s house or garden •in the owner’s home. The law applies to all dogs.

Out of control

Your dog is considered dangerously out of control if it:

•injures someone •makes someone worried that it might injure them A court could also decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if either of the foll o w i n g apply: •it attacks s o m e o n e ’s animal •the owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop your dog attacking their animal.

Penalties

You can get an unlimited fine or be sent to prison for up to six months (or both) if your dog is dangerously out of control. You may not be allowed to own a dog in the future and your dog may be destroyed. If you let your dog injure someone you can be sent to prison for up to five years or fined (or both). If you deliberately use your dog to injure someone you could be charged with ‘malicious

wounding’. If you allow your dog to kill someone you can be sent to prison for up to 14 years or get an unlimited fine (or both). If you allow your dog to injure an assistance dog (eg a guide dog) you can be sent to prison for up to three years or fined (or both). We want to promote responsible dog ownership and keep the public safe, so please ensure that your dog is kept under control at all times especially around children and livestock. On the livestock issue lambing season will soon be upon us and unfortunately every year we have instances of sheep worrying. The relevant legislation is provided below but please be aware the owner of the livestock is entitled to protect his livestock and this could include shooting the offending dog.

Dogs worrying livestock (Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953) An offence is committed by the owner or person in charge of a dog if it attacks or chases livestock on agricultural land or if it is off-lead in a field containing sheep. The definition of livestock includes sheep, goats, cattle, poultry, pigs and horses. Police have the power to seize the dog. The maximum penalty is a fine but a conviction under this section can lead to a destruction order being made under s2 Dogs Act 1871. The above covers the various acts and sections of the law but primarily police want dog owners to act responsively. We have all heard of instances where young children have been severely injured or killed this is still thankfully extremely rare. I would, however, like to ask all dog owners to be aware of their responsibilities. Police Sgt Henry Wright, Tewkesbury Police
