LONDON AND TEWKESBURY UNITED The good people of Tewkesbury have come together to help victims of last month’s devastating fire at the Grenfell Tower in London.

A special fund raising and ‘London event United Tewkesbury Together’ was held at the Fleet Inn, Twyning Lizzie month. last Cunningham, the pub’s manager, organised the evening together with villager Julie Irwin, and from Darling Julie Tewkesbury Hand Car Wash. The event started at 6pm with a barbecue and live music, followed

by a raffle and a charity auction of promises with some incredible prizes donated by local businesses and residents. There was also a candlelit vigil and one in silence minute’s remembrance of the victims of the fire. Money raised on the evening will go to funds assisting residents and families affected by the tragedy.

Donations from Tewkesbury arrive in Middlesex

Thanks to our community Tewkesbury businesswoman Emma Hasa and her husband Jay rallied in support of victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. With the help of plumber Luke Cove, they travelled to London with a van full of clothing and other goods donated by people from Tewkesbury. “We went to the tower to help, and took the donations to Hayes where they will be stored by local assistance teams for re-distribution, “ said Emma. “We were overwhelmed by local support, and thanks to Luke who volunteered with his transport, we were able to make the journey. We filled the van to the top - and just want to thank everyone so much for their donations. It's nice to see a community come together like this.” Julie Darling,Lizzie Cunningham and Julie Owens

The creative 17 year old has always shared a love of flowers with her granddad, and before she landed her new role with Jackie Dean, she spent her spare time helping Jackie with her Kids Flower Club. “I really enjoy working in the shop, meeting new people and seeing happy faces when they receive their flowers. “The apprenticeship means that I'm learning something new everyday and putting it straight into practice,” said Jess. RAILWAY HALT RE-OPENS AFTER SIX DECADES The driving rain didn’t dampen spirits as Lord Wemyss, from nearby Stanway House, opened Hayles Abbey Halt on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway last month. Lord Wemyss is a patron of the railway. The Halt (spelled Hayles by the Great Western Railway) opened in 1928 to coincide with the opening of a museum at the nearby Cistercian Hailes Abbey, but was closed by British Railways in 1960, when local passenger train services were withdrawn. The re-opening of the Halt coincides with the launch of a new museum at the abbey which, is run by English Heritage and owned by the National Trust. The project was completed thanks to a £12,000 grant from the charitable Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Trust, as well as a grant of £2,500 from the Cotswold Conservation Board. The project was completed entirely by volunteers in less than a year, with materials being donated by Building & Plumbing Supplies of Tewkesbury. Glyn Cornish, chairman of the Trust who

Some of the GWR volunteers who re-built Hayles Abbey Halt, with the first train to stop their in almost six decades welcomed guests to the opening commented: “The new Halt is a wonderful example of what can be achieved by volunteers. “It looks as if it has always been there because it closely follows the appearance of the original. “It is complete with a corrugated iron waiting shelter which was recovered from Usk in Wales, identical to that which once stood on the site. It has a gravelled platform

surface and even has oil lamp standards!” The platform is a little longer than the original and some of the railway’s heritage train services are now stopping at the Halt by request. Within five minutes’ walk of the Halt are the Abbey and Hailes Fruit Farm, which once despatched its produce from the Halt. For more details please visit the website www.gwsr.com

As a company we have always welcomed patients feedback, good or bad, writes Peter Badham. I receive emails from patients who are delighted with our staff and our service and sometimes feedback from patients who are not so delighted. I am really grateful that patients go to this much effort. I think Badham's strength is being a family company, where patients have a direct line to the MD. I always take whatever action is needed to sort out any issue. My email address is

Patients can also now leave a review on

This is a rightfully much praised American novel that has garnered prizes, winning both the National Book Award and this year's Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The story recounts the experiences of slaves and of two who dared to try and escape using the secret network to safety in the North. Some details are harrowing, but without this accuracy, to historic fact, the book would not have the gravitas it deserves, and which no doubt has helped it receive these accolades. The main character is Cora, we learn about her early life on the Randall cotton plantation in Georgia, of her mother's earlier escape, leaving her daughter behind, turning her bitter towards her mother. Two Randall sons inherit their father's estate, one is reasonable, but when the second, Terrance then acquires his brother's land and slaves, his brutality forces Cora to agree to another slave's proposal to escape. The book follows their experiences, as they are helped by the good folk who run the underground railway. Their journey is never easy, but initially they succeed and reach South Carolina where they agree to stay while the slave catcher, Ridgeway, purses them. He is fixated about catching Cora as years

earlier, he had failed to capture her mother. The story follows Cora through the Carolinas into Tennessee and Indiana, and her experiences along the way. There are vivid descriptions accompanying her journey, softened by intervals of her experiencing good times as she travels north. There are a mixture of characters sprinkled through the book and each part of the story is neatly concluded, sometimes in hindsight. We also learn about Cora's ancestors, and life on the plantation when it was run more liberally by the son's father. This is an historically important novel, one to read as it tells in fiction form one of America's hidden stories; it is not however a "gentle read", but when you read through a vivid section there is sunshine on the horizon. with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society Although we tend to concentrate on the 20th century development of the shopping centre, rebuilding took place in certain locations in the High Street in the 19th century, writes John Dixon. 84 and 84a High Street was a new property. It has been described as a “Georgian two door house of three storeys”. That is an unlikely since there is an 1883 indenture: “84 and 84a High Street have recently been erected upon the site of ... formerly a Public-House known by the sign of the Cross Keys, but afterwards as a private house and numbered 84 High Street.”

on site of old Red Lion, High Street.” Most writers agree that the Red Lion was situated opposite Red Lane. It had an ancient history: In 1787 “the church paid for alterations to be workhouse until union workhouse opened in 1790s”. It acted as an Anglican Poor House at a time when the religious denominations cared for their own poor by providing work. Between 1819-1832 it may have been known as the Unicorn 1830-67: Red Lion again when it was “demolished and pair of semi-detached red brick cottages built. 1871 after the Cross Keys of 13 High Street was closed, the publican Ann Wakefield was still in place at the new site One can only surmise that little objection was made to the demolition of the old Red Lion/Unicorn Inn.

LANDLORDS Due to high demand we require all types of rental properties for waiting tenants (above) 84/84a High Street in the 19th century and (below) Boots side facade in 2017, which shares the site with 85.

The property was split into two for ownership and occupancy with 84 (left) owned by Charles Hurn while George Wilkins the owner/occupier of 84a (right), was treasurer at the Baptist Church. 84 was only two-up one-down, but 84a had upstairs rooms which extended across the passage The 84a’s owner was also allowed a deduction of £5 for a Right of Way, although the 1885 map suggests that it was merely a court. In 1897 there was a dispute in the County Court, between the owners of 84 and 85, over access to the former Unicorn Alley, as it “had been previously stopped up“. (It has long been the desire of Alley owners to stop them and form more private courts with no thorough fare. If they were paved with blue engineering bricks then this was illegal.) In 1894 Hone’s sold for £500 “two new properties

THS AUTHOR WINS NATIONAL AWARD Tewkesbury Historical Society has announced that Rosemary Wherrett has won the ‘short article’ award by the British Association for Local History. Chairman John Dixon commented: "Rosemary, an avid collector of historical photographs wrote the article, They Left a Lasting Impression – some of Tewkesbury’s Early Photographers, in THS Bulletin 24 (2015). “Rosemary (pictured right) received the award as guest of BALH in June. “Before she retired from full-time teaching in 1998, Rosemary was Head of the English Department at Tewkesbury School from 1987. “Since retiring, she is fully occupied as the Secretary and Information Officer for the Friends of the Victoria Pleasure Gardens, whose volunteers delight us every year - despite competition from Tewkesbury floods. “In 2015 we made her organisation the worthy recipient of profits made from producing Then and Now Volume II Rosemary follows Wendy Snarey and Martin Holt in winning a BALH Award.

The total number of casualties admitted so far stands at an incredible 2,374, compared to 1,845 to the same date last year. In just one day this week, 69 casualties were admitted to the hospital. We are in desperate need of more volunteers to help us through the rest of the busy season. Please do get in touch if you would like to come and join our team at the hospital. A day a week or even half a day (mornings from 8am) is all we are asking for, no experience is necessary. Please contact us if you can help. We also need more casualty collection volunteers – if you are happy to be contacted if we get a call about a small wildlife casualty (e.g. a hedgehog, rabbit or small bird) in your local area and you are happy to transport it to us in Beckford, give us a ring. We have over 400 casualties in our care at this time of year and it is therefore impossible for us to send out anyone from here to pick up more animals, we rely entirely on either the finder bringing it in or our collection volunteers to transport. One major problem for our wildlife (throughout the world, not just the UK) is litter and I will be writing more about this next month but we have recently dealt with one example of the damage that litter can cause: We received a call about a heron in some-

body’s house – now we regularly get calls to wildlife in strange places, usually birds that have come down chimneys or animals brought in by the cat, even a muntjac deer in someone’s toilet, but this is the first heron in a house, and upstairs of all places! We thought it would be a simple case of catching the heron and then taking him to a suitable release site but when he was caught he was found to be in an emaciated state so he was brought back to the hospital for a thorough examination. We then discovered that he had what looked like a show lace tangled around his lower beak and tongue. It had obviously been there for some time and the poor heron had been unable to feed since it had been there which explained why he was so thin.

We removed the constriction and as soon as we put a tray of fish in front of the heron, he started eating immediately and within a few days he had gained enough weight and strength to be released

into the wild again. A good ending to this story, but litter and plastics are causing massive problems across the world and we will look into this more next time. www.valewildlife.org.uk

COMMEMORATION OF THE START OF THE THIRD BATTLE OF YPRES, 29 JULY 2017 On 29 July 2017 the War Memorial Working Party of local citizens proposes to lead a Commemoration of the start of the Third Battle of Ypres, commonly known as the Battle of Passchendaele. Members of the public are strongly invited to join us outside the Town Hall before 10.45 a.m.. The traffic will be halted for a One Minute Silence followed by the reading of the names of the 27 local men who perished in the campaign, which began on 6 June and reached its bloody climax between 31 July and 10 November 1917. Besides the appalling loss of life troops had to endure the mud cause by an unusually wet summer. Despite the losses, the campaign was deemed a success when the village of Passchendaele, situated on a strategic ridge, was captured. Already in the early summer of 1917 5 local men had been killed pursuing the Germans in their retreat to the new Hindenburg Defensive Line while another 7 men had been lost at Arras as we supported our French allies, whose army had mutinied as the desired breakthrough had not been achieved. Because of their

“indomitable pluck” British soldiers did not mutiny and so FieldMarshal Haig was also now free to pursue the battle on his preferred front - near Ypres, which had been held with huge casualties since the start of the War. This battlefield in North West France was near the Channel ports vital for supplying the army. Before the battle could start preparations were necessary and so in June 1 Tewkesburian was killed capturing the

Ridge at Messines and another in an abortive attempt to capture the submarine base at Zeebrugge, fatefully known as Operation Hush. Another was lost in the inevitable trench warfare. One of the dead was the first loss of a Tewkesburian serving with the fledgling Royal Flying Corps [to be renamed the RAF on 1 April 1918]. We hope that you will join our salute to the memories of these brave men.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

SIX SUMMER MILES To make the most of the lighter nights and summer weather, this month's walk is slightly longer than our usual routes, writes Jack B. Walker. It is generally easy going over terrain which is mostly flat. Park with care in the village of Aston-on-Carrant (reached from the B4079 by Ashchurch Camp) and walk to the end of the village street. Go through the gate into the yard and follow the footpath past the riding stable and paddocks (1). At the end of the first small field, go through the gate and walk ahead along a straight path with open fields to your right and the hedge on the left. Eventually you will reach the Cotswold stone Aston barn, and after passing the buildings the main bridleway bears left (2). Keep straight ahead and walk across a field towards a hedge. Go through the gate, cross the lane with care and go through the five bar gate opposite (slightly to the left) and take the track known as the Worlies (3). Below you on the left is Carrant Brook, which for some of its length forms the county boundary between Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. This section of the

walk is wholly in Worcestershire. Keep along the trail, passing the pumping station, until you come to the edge of Beckford village (4). Turn left and walk along the road, passing the entrance to the manor house. When you reach the cross bear slightly left and go over Main Street into Court Farm Lane (5). Keep up the lane, which bears left just

after a pond behind a stone wall, and carry on until you come to Court Farm. Follow the lane left, between the farm buildings. Do not take the lane which ascends Bredon Hill, but carry on along a stony track (with a sunken barn to the left) until you reach a road. Turn right and walk up the road (which is busy and has no pedestrian pavement) until it bears sharply right (6). Go straight ahead along the private road which leads to Overbury Stud, and look for a gate with a yellow way marker leading into a paddock on the right. Go through and walk

diagonally across the paddock towards a hedge, and pass through the gates. Follow the directional arrow to a five bar gate opening onto a drive. Walk past the stables and stud farm buildings on the right, until you reach a lane (7). Cross over, go through a five bar gate into some paddocks, then into a large field via another farm gate. Keep the post and rail fencing to your right, passing a stile to meet a hedge. Walk with the hedge to the right until you reach a gate in it at the end of the field. Go through and bear left, then keep walking along a good track with the hedge to your right. Pass the turning to Robin's Mill and keep going until the lane dips down slightly, and there is a stile and gate to your right (8). The lane continues ahead into Kemerton village, passing the John Moore Nature reserve. Don't take this lane; instead turn left and follow the path down the

Walk ahead following the path over a large open field, towards a gap in a hedge (X). Some of this ground is soft and occasionally a diversion is in place; if so walk around the edge of the field until you reach the gap and go through it. Carry on ahead, skirting a sand and gravel pit

on the right. Temporary stiles are sometimes in place here, so follow the arrows as directed for the path's current route. After passing the pit, bear slightly left and follow the path back towards Aston across the field (Y). Cross Carrant Brook by the footbridge, over a meadow then a paddock, and go back into the village via a path between some houses.

FAST FOOD AND DINING OUT in Tewkesbury DISH OF THE MONTH

POLLO ALLA VALDOSTANA This dish, typical of the Val d’Aosta region of northern Italy, comes from Tewkesbury’s Zitto e Mangia. It combines local ingredients, which consist of chicken, prosciutto ham, and fontina cheese. It is a rich, hearty and flavoursome dish, which is usually served alongside fresh seasonal vegetables. It can be enjoyed with both red or white wine, depending on individual, personal preference. • Lightly pound a chicken breast into an even thickness, coat in flour, dip in beaten egg and dredge in breadcrumbs. • Lightly fry in extra virgin

PREVENTATIVE CAR CARE with local garage owner Rahul Gokani

THE BENEFITS AND ADVANTAGES TO AIRCON SERVICING Car air conditioning systems cool the vehicle and its occupants in hot weather, and are now a common feature in most modern cars. The Air conditioning system filters and dehumidifies the air entering the cabin, which aids towards the demisting of windows in all weather conditions. Plus also helps with filtering the allergens entering the car. If the system is not used often, a build up of fungus and bacteria will grow in the system emitting an unhealthy vapour into the car. A System desterilizer will combat this and relieve the smell and fungi. An Air-conditioning system with no gas and

its gases every year. The system must be serviced every 2 years to maintain full efficiency. An air conditioning service consists of completely emptying and refilling the system with fresh gas and oil, plus checking that all components and operating pressures are in good working order. In addition to this, a pressure test is carried out within the system to check for any leaks. If a leak is detected then a Non harmful gas with an ultra violet dye is injected in to the system to identify any leaks. See Rahul at RPMotors for an air con service, call 01684 437010.

The first weekend coincided with the Big Weekend, and I was invited to open it. My Mayoress and good friend, Maggie Wylam and I had great time being taken up the river and back by boat, then wandering around the stalls, games and sideshows, and meeting lots of lovely people. From there we moved to the High Street to unveil a lovely long needed map of the alley ways in the town centre - It is on the wall of Warders Alley (next to M&Co) if you want to see it for yourself. On Sunday, after taking the salute from a parade of boats we led the carnival parade - the theme was carnival, and I was glad I was not asked to judge it as all

the costumes were wonderfully imaginative, and I would have wanted to give them all a prize. Our next outing was to an evening of entertainment by the very talented Manor Players many of them, old friends from my years as a thespian. The Abbey fete followed soon afterwards, where we were given a warm welcome by the Vicar - the Rev-Canon Paul Williams. Spending time in and around our lovely Abbey is always a delight. We were also invited to a service for the 6th formers leaving Tewkesbury School at the end this term. What a confident and talented lot they are - a real credit to parents and staff

and a great re-assurance about the future of our town. I also went to special Antigua day at Courtney World Travel Agent where along with the Consulate from the Antiguan embassy, the TownCrier and the lovely staff of Courtney World, I drank rum punch from a hollowed out half a pineapple. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. On the practical side I have chaired several meetings of the town council, without anything disasterous happening, and am working on a scheme that I think the town will like - but keeping it under my new Tricorn Hat for now. Peggy Clatworthy Tewkesbury Town Mayor.

BLACK BELT JOY FOR TWO TEENAGERS Two students from the White Tiger Martial Arts Academy based at the Wheatpieces Community Centre in Tewkesbury have been promoted to 1st degree Black Belts (1st Dan) after a National Ch’ang-Hon Taekwon-Do Association Black Belt grading on Saturday 27th May 2017. Alexander Cole (15) and William Lockwood (17) have both been promoted to 1st Degree Black Belts and had to perform various disciplines that included advanced leg and hand techniques, set sparring combinations, free sparring, grappling and patterns (attack and defence combinations in various directions), breaking boards and tiles plus a theory test to ensure a good knowledge of the Taekwon-Do. Their grading panel consisted of high ranking Black Belts including a 3rd Dan, 5th Dan, two 6th Dan Masters, 7th Dan Master, 8th Dan Senior Master and a 9th

Dan Grandmaster. Everything rested on their performances on the day, but dedication, correct preparation and good instruction ensured their success. Their instructor Paul Wanklyn 5th Dan said: “It was a special moment for me and my wife Jill (also an Instructor) to see both Alex and William obtain their Black Belt. They have worked very hard to achieve their grades and we’re extremely proud of them. It’s not easy to attain black belt and even harder to achieve a higher dan grade. I’ve watched these youngsters grow into compe-

tent Martial Artists over the past four years and they’ve overcome a number of barriers to get there. Their dedication and commitment is outstanding, they are a credit to their parents”. HE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in Tewkesbury and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Mr Franks recalls an instance, the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broke, gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel, estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find East Midlands Antiques’ representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free valuation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash. So pop along and see us at The Tudor House Hotel. Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance, on one occasion this year, a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available. So on the Wednesday 10th August you have the chance to visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you, specialising in oil paintings, water-colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay up to £2500 paid for these articles.

The battle lasted for 99 days until 6th November, resulting in over 325,000 Allied and 260,000 German casualties for very little Allied gain. Every evening since 1928, the Last Post has been played under the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres at 8pm sharp by volunteer buglers of the Last Post Association. On Wednesday 17th May 2017, this unique ceremony took place for the 30678th time and, on behalf of Tewkesbury Branch of The Royal

British Legion, Mr Robert Davis laid a wreath in memory of all Tewkesbury men who fell during the First World War. Rob is a regular collector for the Poppy Appeal in Tewkesbury and the attached image shows his efforts being acknowledged by the branch with a certificate of appreciation.

WEDNESDAY EVENING STROLLS

The Tewkesbury men who lost their lives during this battle will also be commemorated during a solemn ceremony outside Tewkesbury Town Hall at 11am on Saturday 29th July 2017. With the High Street will be closed for a food and craft market, everyone is invited to attend the ceremony. By Andy Parker, Secretary of the British Legion Club.

SEVERN UNIT MVS GOES OFFSHORE In early June the Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service embarked on their annual training trip down the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We had hoped to go across to Cardiff and South Wales then make our way across to the Somerset Coast to Porlock and Watchet but unfortunately due to the inclement weather which included Storm Force 9 Gales we had to make major alterations to our plans and instead we went into Bristol via Portishead. It gave some of our newer members a taste of what the Bristol Channel can be like and how quickly the weather and sea conditions change.” Nic also commented how, prior to the trip, Unit members David Peet and Will Fish had to rescue a lady who was a non swimmer who fell overboard on the Avon near Tewkesbury. He said “We practice this “Man Overboard” Exercise regularly and we were pleased it went well and we could help the lady to safety using our Unit boat Minerva.”

MVS Minerva negotiating the area known as the Hen & Chickens and avoiding Lyde Rock while approaching the first Severn Crossing.

OUR ALLEYWAYS by Steve Goodchild

THE HISTORY OF SCOTT’S ALLEY IN TEWKESBURY’S HIGH STREET The High Street entrance to Scott’s Alley was closed off and it became a court in about 1886. It was then entered only from Oldbury Road. This remained the case until the late 1950s when the remaining cottages were demolished and Sweets built a pair of garages across the entrance. The alley itself is slowly being absorbed into the gardens of the houses along the south of Trinity Street. The alley was named after Mr Scott, a whitesmith (tinsmith) and bell-hanger. He had a shop on the High Street and workshops in the alley. This probably explains the relatively small number of houses in the alley. In 1841 there were six households, and by 1881 this had reduced to two, with a common toilet and washroom. The ‘front house’ is now the Orange Pig, which would have been Scott’s ironmonger’s and

the alley entrance is now the door to 123 High Street. By 1870, it had become ‘Hodges’ Beerhouse’ (later to

become the Brewer’s Arms). Samuel Hodges was described as a brewer and his wife as a Tobacco pipe manufac-

Scott’s Alleyway

turer. It seems that moulding clay pipes was a cottage industry; the cottage in Lilley’s Alley called ‘Clay Pipes’ is evidence for this. The Hodges were owners of one of Tewkesbury’s two ‘clay pipe factories’ where the pipes were fired in kilns. Pottery kilns and cottages make uncomfortable neighbours in alleys, and the residents were obviously unhappy. It first hit the news in 1876 when John Taunton was summoned for threatening a boy

Scott’s Alleyway more is heard about the matter, probably because the kiln was shut down. In 1882, the Brewers Arms was sold, with part of Scott’s Alley. In 1883, the beer licence was removed because the property had become a

who was shaking the dust out of the factory’s mats in the alley. In 1879, the council considered a complaint about smoke and excessive heat. They were worried about the effect on the cottage it was attached to, but stopped short of ordering its closure. They ordered Mr Hodges to raise the chimney by 20 feet. He promised to do this, and to change from burning coal to coke. He, of course, prevaricated. In 1880, the surveyor reported that all was satisfactory, and nothing

private dwelling. Soon after this the High Street entrance was closed off, with half of the alley being lost to public view, and only three houses remained, with access from Oldbury Road. This entrance is still marked by the pair of garages next to No. 11, the Trinity Church offices, which closed it off. The story of Scott’s Court mirrors that of

many alleys. The cottages were the ‘typical’ three floors with a single room on each floor and very few creature comforts. There were some scandals and inter-family tensions and feuds, some of which were settled in court. There were tragedies, such as the terrible injuries to William Pitman’s son, whose clothes were set alight by a candle and David Green, killed in a at railway disaster Charfield. By 1938, Scott’s Court was caught up in the slum clearance programme, with No’s 2 and 3 slated for clearance. The war intervened, though, and the Council took them over and renovated them, at £15 per house, to help with the emergency demand for housing. They didn’t survive long after the war. The last record in the press is a small-ad in 1946, where Mr Northey was selling his motorcycle, a Brough twin, for £15. By 1960 all three cottages had gone and the alley became just a memory.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

CARRYING BURDENS This month I share a thought-provoking story with you, I found it on the net. The original author is unknown, writes counsellor and therapist David Slater. One morning a person wasted nearly an hour watching a tiny ant carry a huge feather across the back terrace. Several times it was

confronted by obstacles in its path and after a momentary pause it would make the necessary detour. At one point the ant

had to negotiate a crack in the concrete about 10mm wide. After brief contemplation the ant laid the feather over the crack, walked across it and picked up the feather on the other side then continued on its way. The person was fascinated by the ingenuity of this ant, one of God’s smallest creatures. It served to reinforce the miracle of creation. Here was a minute insect, lacking in size yet equipped with a brain to reason, explore, discover and overcome. But this ant, like the two-legged co-residents of this planet, also shares human failings. After some time the ant finally reached its destination – a flower bed at the end of the terrace and a small hole that was the entrance to its underground home. And it was here that the ant finally met its match. How could that large

feather possibly fit down that small hole? Of course it couldn’t. So the ant, after all this trouble and exercising great ingenuity, overcoming problems all along the way, just abandoned the feather and went home. The ant had not thought the problem through before it began its epic journey and in the end the feather was nothing more than a burden. Isn’t life like that? We worry about our family, we worry about money or the lack of it, we worry about work, about where we live, about all sorts of things. These are all burdens – the things we pick up along life’s path and lug them around the obstacles and over the crevasses that life will bring, only to find that at the destination they are useless and we can’t take them with us.
