FESTIVE FUN IN TEWKESBURY TOWN It’s official: Christmas starts right here in Tewkesbury! With so much to see and do in the town this festive season - and a host of independent traders providing everything you need - why go anywhere else? To help Christmas shoppers, there will be free parking in Tewkesbury’s council owned town centre car parks on Saturday 3rd December, which is also ‘small business day’ - an incentive to encourage people to shop locally. In the afternoon, why not pop over to the John Moore Primary School at Walton Cardiff, where their Christmas Fair will be in full swing from 2pm-5pm. On the evening of Sat 3rd, Tewkesbury Choral Society will be at the abbey from 7.30pm, performing Rossinis’ Petite Messe Solenelle. Other Christmas Music events in the abbey include Carols for Carers (Saturday 10th), The Schola Cantorum Carol Service (Tuesday 13th) and a special service of nine lessons and carols on Sunday 18th.

I did not feature this book when it first came into paperback as, to me, it is a great book to read now the clocks have gone back, the evenings are darker and we can nestle down in front of the fire and relax with a really good novel. Sebastian Faulks, author of "Birdsong" and many other good reads offers an interesting tale mostly centred on an island off the south French coast where the chief protagonist Robert Hendricks, a British Psychiatrist is invited to meet a fellow Doctor, Alexander Pereira, to become his Literary Executor, even though they had not previously met. The reason for this invitation is explained by Pereira having read an academic book by Hendricks, finding a professional connection and the belief that he had served with Robert's father in W.W.1. Hendricks is depressed with his present life style so decides to travel to meet and stay with this stranger. War time memories feature in this story and the fact the Frenchman had served in the British Army, enables Robert to learn more about his own father. Their initial discussions prompt Robert to release his own hidden war time experiences. So we learn about Hendricks own service in the W.W.2.,
especially at Anzio. After this first visit Hendrick's reestablishes contact with ex-colleagues he had distanced himself from for over twenty years. The people he meets on the island are varied, and his return trip concludes in uncovering Pereira's past, but also the lives of the strange disgruntled housekeeper, and other local characters. Faulks once again uses his fascination in war to tell a good tale, graphically recounted, some of which reflects the author's father's involvement in the same campaign. Also his past research into psychology is well used, but in a readable accessible format. Light the fire, slippers on, enjoy! Oh, and in case you enjoy Sebastian's Pistaches on BBC Radio 4 for "The Write Stuff", there is a new volume "Pistache Returns" out now. At £10.99, it maybe an ideal Christmas gift.

GHOST WALK RAISES £270 The organisers of Tewkesbury Medieval Festival recently held a Ghost Walk, raising £270 for the Town Mayor's charity fund. Forty brave souls were guided through the town's network of alleyways on the hunt for apparitions, and even managed to survive a tour of the Old Baptist Chapel's grave yard without any mishaps. Lurking in the shadows are (pictured right) three cloaked ladies Amanda Thomas, Pauline Woodend and Peggy Clatworthy with Karen Brennan, the Tewkesbury Town Mayor.

EL ORIGINAL BREW RELEASED IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS
Bill Hunt, of Wizzard/ELO fame, has just written a brand-new composition ‘El Original Brew’, a song intended as a companion piece and follow-up to the classic Wizzard track from 1972 'The Carlsberg Special'. The Tewkesbury-based musician has formed a new supergroup to perform and record it called ‘The Ancient Order of Froth Blowers,’ and they’re releasing the single just in time for Christmas on special 'Beer coloured' vinyl. Bill Hunt is a walking piece of pop memorabilia; a collector’s item. The only musician, along with the superlative Roy Wood, to have been in the original line up of both the world renowned ELO and 70’s glam rock chart toppers Wizzard, who used to wish it could be Christmas every day. In 1972 Bill wrote the ‘B side’ of the first Wizzard single, Ball Park Incident, which sold over 250,000 copies. The original title was to be ‘The Light Fantastic’, but Roy wasn’t so keen, as there was a local Birmingham band of the same name. So, unknown to Bill, the band re-named the
Bill Hunt (Pic: Darren Sawyer) track, ‘The Carlsberg Special’ (Pianos Demolished Phone 021 373 4472). The inclusion of Bill’s home number in the title led to his phone ringing non-stop and double non-stop at the weekends! Forty three years later, Bill has written the follow up – ‘El Original Brew,’ which will be released on Friday 15th December. On “Side 2” will be a Sundae Club-ed version of singer-songwriter Will Hunt’s (Bill’s son) homage to Kentish Town, called Drums N Bass.
Will led the Columbiasigned band Dansette Junior, whose single Paranoid has over 1,500,000 hits on YouTube. Bill’s all-star band on the single features Miles Hunt (The Wonderstuff), Nick Pentelow and Hugh McDowell (Wizzard/ELO) and The Sundae Club. For more information visit the website frothblower.wixsite.com/web site or check out facebook.com/frothblowers. The single will be available from frothblowerband.bandcamp.c om/

I remember them with very mixed feelings. I remember at one school party a child threw her present back at Santa Claus in the broom cupboard under the stairs that was, for that moment, his Grotto." Don't want that rubbish," she said. " Got better at home". Children would say " I am having a computer for Christmas BUT that's not my BIG present"! I hardly dared try to imagine what that was to be In another school I remember walking to my car after the school party and seeing along the street, in roadside bins, on pavements, discarded gifts that children had just cast aside. The PTA had worked hard to raise money for those. As Head, the next year, I eventually persuaded them not to buy gifts. It was a fight but I did win. Somewhere along the line I felt the true meaning of Christmas had been lost. There was a little lad aged 11 whose mum had died years ago. This year his dad had gone off with another woman and he found himself living with his aunty, his mum's sister. Nice, you might think BUT that was far from the truth. Paul was a sweet and gentle boy. Lovely manners and very helpful and caring but his aunt refused to see any of these good points and his life was far from happy. He knew he was not wanted there but he still kept on being his nice self. Paul often stayed for a while after school had finished. He would help clear the classroom. He would help get things ready for the next day. And he would talk. How he would talk! A lot of his chattering was about his mum and dad. He obviously missed them a great deal.
He had so many things and feelings that he wished to share and I was honoured that with me he could feel able to share them. As we got nearer to Christmas I noticed that he seemed to not stay so often after school. Indeed he would scamper out of the classroom as soon as we had said our "Good afternoon(s)". I pretended not to notice for a while but I have to admit it was starting to worry me. One day I stopped him before he could get out through the door. I asked him why he was in such a dash to get home these days. "You were a real help to me. I missed you !" He looked up at me and looked me right in the eyes. " Did you really miss me ? he asked. "Of course I did." I replied. I told him how much I valued his help and how I had enjoyed our chats." I just hope that there is nothing worrying you or that you have not got into trouble at home for being late." Paul smiled, and a smile from Paul was like the sun shining after heavy rain. " I have been making you something," he said. "It's for Christmas." He didn't stay after school any more but he seemed happy enough so I tried not to worry. On the last day of term when we were breaking up for Christmas Paul came up to me. He had his hands behind his back. " I want to give you your present," he said. "I hope that you like it!" As he held out his hands towards me lying in the palms was a tiny wooden box. It was made of scraps of wood but it was made with such care. It was beautiful. "Oh, Paul, this is lovely, " I said. " I wonder what is inside it ?"
I opened the top to see what was inside. "Oh, you can't see what's inside," said Paul." You can't eat it. You can't drink it. You can't touch it. You can't taste it. My mum said that it is something very special because it can make you feel good all the time. It makes you feel warm on cold nights. It makes you feel safe when you are on your own." I gazed into the empty box. "What is it, Paul ? " I asked quietly. " What is

going to make me feel so good?" Paul looked at me and said " It's Love. My mum always said it's best when you give it away!" Before I could say anything Paul had turned and quietly left the room. That box was special. That box IS special. Why? Because there is LOVE in it. Yes, Christmas is for parties and fun and singing and gifts but mostly, Christmas is for love. Happy Christmas.

Today we care for over 4,000 casualties every year. Over the years we have seen the pattern of the seasons change with regard to the numbers of animals admitted to Vale in each season. The spring and summer months have always been absolutely manic with up to fifty casualties coming in daily and our staff are on the go from first light until late at night or even through the night caring for hundreds of baby birds and mammals. Until a few years ago we used to look forward to ‘catching our breath’ during the quiet winter months with few casual-
looking after a few more unusual (for this time of year) animals. Eight day-old mallard ducklings were rescued recently which certainly wouldn’t have survived if they hadn’t come in to us. Ducklings are normally hatched in the spring and summer although we did once have a brood brought in on Christmas day a few years ago. We also have a leveret with us at the moment, the second one we have reared outside of the normal hare breeding season this year. He/she is doing well and is now in an outside enclosure until he is big enough to be released.
Cat of the Month Here is Cara! Cara is a 3/4 year old, black and white, female cat. She came into care with her kittens as her owner had to move to a nursing home. All of her kittens have now been spoken for. She has now been neutered. Cara is a very sweet natured cat and loves a stroke and a chat. She has been a very good mum. She has very unusual markings with a white 'paw-print' and white 'splash If you are interested in Cara or any other cats or kittens on our website, please contact Jenny, Homing and Welfare Officer on 0345 371 2730

Otter cub ties coming in we could concentrate on all the maintenance and cleaning jobs that we hadn’t had time to do in the preceding months. Things have changed drastically recently with the winter months being almost as busy as the summer and some unexpected patients being admitted that we wouldn’t normally expect to see at this time of year. We always have a large number of hedgehogs in throughout the colder months – autumn juveniles born too late in the year to put on enough weight to survive the winter, and at the moment we are caring for more than 220 of them! This alone puts massive pressure on our finances as each hedgehog costs more than £5 per week to look after. We are using more than 1,000 tins of tinned cat and dog food at the moment and we have put out an urgent appeal for funds and food to help us feed all these prickly patients. Besides the usual hedgehog influx we are
The latest youngster to be admitted was an otter cub, only four to five weeks old, found in a garden, freezing cold and massively dehydrated. As there was a river nearby and there had been heavy rain in the preceding twenty four hours, we assume that he had been washed out of the holt and had somehow managed to get out of the water into the garden. Several hours were spent searching for any siblings there may have been, but none were found. The cub is doing well, although he is being treated for a chest infection, he should make a full recovery and we need to start searching the UK for another centre that has otter cubs of a similar age so that he can have company of his own kind to prevent him becoming imprinted on humans which would mean he could never be released. If you would like to donate towards the care of all these casualties, please visit our website www.valewildlife.org.uk

LANDLORDS 89 High Street in 1958 with demolition imminent What is now half of Lloyd’s pharmacy and part of Bishops Walk was the famous Nellie Jones’ shop, writes John Dixon. She was celebrated for making her own ice-cream; her niece says she has never tasted any so good since. Brian Linnell, however, claimed that it was “tasteless and full of ice crystals!” Nellie was also a very “feisty” lady who, legend alleges, ran Oswald Moseley’s Fascist Blackshirts out of town (though her role has yet to be proved!). Note the Midland Red information board – legend also has it that fisherman sent elvers by bus to their relations in Birmingham! The alley to the left was formerly Townsends but was then Glovers Alley. In 1851 Glover was, according to John Rogers, a "very respectable” carpenter” but his alley was narrow, only four feet at widest, The twelve houses were very small, dirty, dark "something like holes in the wall, filled with stocking frames.” All was swept away in 1966.

Tewkesbury Boys Brigade marks sixtieth anniversary It is now sixty years since Captain C. Durrant formed the First Tewkesbury Boys Brigade Company at Holy Trinity Church, writes former bandmaster John A. Lampitt. Over the years the company has become well known locally for its religious, sporting and musical efforts. Its band has played at numerous events, including at the old Cascades Leisure Centre, in the presence of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in Her Majesty’s jubilee year. To mark their sixtieth
anniversary, Tewkesbury Boys Brigade is
holding a commemorative service at Holy Trinity Church in Oldbury Road, Tewkesbury, on Sunday 4th December. An invite goes out to all former captains, officers and, especially, old boys, to come along and form up outside the church at 2.30pm, before attending the service.
“IT’S ASTOUNDING” Those are the words used by Sarah Hutchings,to sum up the result of her Christmas Charity Raffle, held at her Northway Auction Rooms last month. Sarah had been asking local businesses and her customers to donate items or services to raffle off in aid of Children in Hospital at Christmas. A staggering £1,020 was raised and Sarah was delighted, and she wishes to thank all those who made donations and to those who bought tickets. Hopefully Christmas will be a little brighter for children in Hospital this year.

A DECEMBER MAKEOVER with Emma Hasa of Ell Hair Salon This month Zoe Earnshaw, a regular reader of Tewkesbury Direct, took up Emma’s offer for readers to get in touch for a makeover. Firstly Emma used i-prime to even out Zoe’s skin, then applied i-tint medium moisturiser mixed with i-foundation cinnamon. Emma then applied i-glow sirocco to Zoe’s eyelids and cheeks, i-flick kohl liner on top eyelid, and three layers of i-flutter black mascara. For Zoe’s lips, Emma used i-slick opulence and then applied i-finish light to seal the makeup. To complete her new look Zoe’s hair was styled using Eufora products including Volume powder and fusion, and was curled with neuro straight irons. Now Zoe believes that no editing or playing around with the photo takes place, and she added “The whole experience was brilliant and can’t believe how different I looked and felt from a few decent products, I now feel like a glamour mum not a frumpy mum.”

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
THE THREE VILLAGES WALK One of the great attractions of Bredon Hill is the charming variety of villages which surround it, writes Jack. B. Walker. This month’s ramble (ideal for winter) gives an opportunity to visit three quite different places, each with a unique character.
Winter wonderland: Overbury
Starting from the war memorial in the centre of Kemerton village, walk down the lane towards church and at the crossroads, turn left. You will pass some farm buildings, and at the end of the tarmac road take the path through the trees. At the bottom of the slope, turn left just before the stream and go through a five bar gate into a field (1). The
Christmas Poisonings Christmas is an indulgent time of year where we look forward to sharing festive treats with family and friends while relaxing and enjoying good company. It is also the perfect opportunity to spoil our furry friends with a few little extra luxuries. Unfortunately this is a time where accidental poisonings become more likely as we sit in a darkened room before clearing away the left-over Christmas dinner, leave Christmas cake on the side board, the mince pies and Christmas pudding beside it, along with the giant box of chocolates Auntie brought round!
Household hazards to look out for
dogs and cats are not small furry humans, and as such metabolise substances very differently to us! This means there are many items we eat quite happily but are toxic to dogs or cats. during the holiday
ground can be quite boggy here. Follow the path right across the field to a farm gate, go through and take the same line to cross a footbridge in the next field. (2). Keep ahead and go over a stile, then yet another plank bridge and two more stiles to reach the lower grounds of Overbury Estate (3). Overbury Court is visible away to your left. Go
season common accidental poisons seen are from grapes, raisins, chocolate, walnuts and cooked bones. Throughout the year we have also recently seen poisonings from wild mushrooms, antifreeze, human medications, garlic and avocados. It’s also worth being vigilant of the flowers that are given to us as gifts. did you know that mistletoe, pine, poinsettia and amaryllis can all be toxic to pets? The pollen from lilies is highly poisonous to cats. Lily poisoning is a life threatening emergency even if the cat looks perfectly well. If you are concerned that your pet may have eaten something they shouldn’t, then please seek veterinary advice as soon as possible to minimise the potential harm to your pet. Please call 01684 292244 or 01242 679880 if you have any questions. Wishing you and your pet a safe and happy Christmas

DISTANCE: Just under 4 miles, flat. Can be quite muddy in parts, especially after rain. CAR PARKING: with respect to residents, in the centre of Kemerton village. REFRESHMENTS: The Crown Inn, Kemerton MAP: not to scale. OS Sheet 190 recommended. diagonally across the field towards the agricultural buildings in the Estate Yard. Go through a kissing gate and follow the yellow way markers, passing some garages and up a slope past a wood store (see photo above). At the end of the fence, turn left (4) up a track, passing some barns on the left, and into Overbury village. On meeting the road (5) turn left, and walk past the Church and a high stone wall. Cross to the right hand side of the road as you walk out of the village, and look for a metal gate on your right (6). Go through the gate and follow the arrows across the field to another small gate. Pass through it and walk ahead, keeping the hedge to your right. (Temporary fences and gates are sometimes added into this field). Eventually you will meet a lane coming up from Kemerton (7). Walk straight ahead down a lane, passing a farm on your right. At the next junction keep straight ahead into Baylis Road, and look for a path in front of you, leading between some houses into a field (8). The path bears right, then left, to skirt the right hand side of the field. Keep on this path, go through a gap in a hedge and keep the same line, eventually
emerging on to the road in Westmancote (9). Turn left and walk down through the village, until you reach a three way junction. Bear right along the road towards Bredon for a short distance, then cross opposite the bus shelter (10) and take a narrow path into some trees at the side of a bungalow. Keep following this path until you emerge through a small gate, cross a small plantation and meet a broader track (11). Turn right along this track, then left along another wide path with hedges either side. (12). When you reach the road (13) turn right, then take the next road on the left back into Kemerton village (14). This is Back Lane, which wends its way gently upwards, with some fine old buildings along the way. After passing the black and white Old Manor, and then Kemerton Court, look for a small green with an attractive Georgian House set back to the right. (15). Take the footpath which passes between a cottage and Upper Court’s gardens (to the left), down to a small lake. The remains of an old cider mill can be seen here too. Keep the lake to your right, and at the end of the bank go along the path into the trees, then over a footbridge to return to point (1).

Dr. Barbara Moore, born Anna Cherkasova 22nd December 1903, a Russian-born British engineer who gained celebrity in the early 1960s for her long-distance walking and health beliefs. In early 1960, aged 57, she walked from John O'Groats to Land's End in 23 days. She arrived in Tewkesbury on 30th January 1960. As the Mythe Road, leading into Tewkesbury was flooded she was given permission to walk along the Mythe Railway embankment and bridges. See her pictured wearing a plastic rain mac. She was escorted to Tewkesbury Railway Station by Station Master Mr. H. Claines. In the background is Stanchard Pit in flood, and the sluice gate building on the left belongs to the White Bear.
Some of the faces in the photograph, I think I can remember, as David Neale, Chris Miles, Michael Preedy and Tony Codogan, but not sure. From the railway station she was escorted by PC. A. Tucker to the Town Hall, where the Mayor (Cllr. W.E. Lane) greeted her. At 1.10pm she went into the Swan Hotel in the High Street for a lunch of Salad, peanuts and fruit juice, (she apparently believed that neither energy nor body heat came from
food and gradually reduced her diet to nothing more than lemon juice and water. Throughout, her epic hikes were fuelled by nuts honey, raw fruit and lemon juice) she emerged at 2pm to continue her journey. She arrived at Lands End at 1.25pm on 4th February 1960. She passed away in a London hospital in 1977, aged 73, after a life seemingly furnished by a wealth of colourful stories.

TEWKESBURY BAPTIST CHURCH - 30 YEAR CELEBRATIONS In 1984 that Tewkesbury Baptist Church moved out of its deteriorating building in Barton Street. A site had been acquired on the corner of Chance Street and Station Road, and plans were in preparation for a new modern church which could better serve the community. Building of the new church started in June 1986, and the first service was held on 13th November 2016. It was officially opened on 6th December 1986, and the following week the boys and girls of the Covenanter (‘Covie’) youth groups did their first Christmas presentation in the new building. Since that time on the leadership of Pastor Bill O’Leary the Church has been a thriving, lively fellowship with in addition to Sunday worship, extensive youth work and many other activities and being used by many community groups for training, seminars or parties. Now thirty years on, the church is celebrating those years with the
same sequence of events. On 4th December at 10:30am there will be a Celebration Service for all ages followed by a boring and share lunch, and the following week at 4:00pm the boys and girls of the covenanter Youth groups (Covies) will present their Christmas presentation and all ex covies (and parents) are encouraged to come and join in either or both services and meet old friends. During those 30 years many folks – young and old – have passed through the church doors, made use of the building and enjoyed fellowship together. Pastor Bill O’Leary commented that “The Baptist Fellowship has existed in Tewkesbury since before 1623 when
they met in the Old Baptist Chapel in Church St. In 1804 they moved to the Barton St site behind what was the Star and Garter coaching inn. Throughout the years the fellowship has been engaged in being involved with the people
of the town, starting the first school. It is still our desire to be vitally engaged in the life of our town meeting needs wherever we can. If you have never visited us before please join us for our 30th celebrations”.

A TRULY SPECIAL PLACE For many months, readers of Tewkesbury Direct, have urged us to run a feature on a recreation and educational haven that helps people with issues that they find disabling. Many students from Tewkesbury and the villages attend The Butterfly Garden, a project that offers a safe, social environment, with a wide range of stimulating and purposeful activities to be explored. Situated on Bamfurlong Lane alongside the airport at Staverton, the centre came in to being in 2002 when nursery owner Chris Evans was asked to give a talks on gardening to a growing number of very interested visitors who were experiencing life challenges. Growing interest from all areas led to developments of new activities for students, and ideas, including woodwork, cookery, drama, dance and even recycling are now offered in new facilities that are continuing to grow. The Butterfly Garden is visited by over 210 students, who come from schools and colleges or have been referred by social services, care services, support organisations and the NHS.
Students thrive in the environment, where they can just be themselves, relaxing, working or just enjoying a supportive social atmosphere. The volunteer run project, is absolutely free, and is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 3.00pm and stays open during the school holidays. Reports from students and local people, are brimming with praise for this much needed facility and Chris had this to add “We welcome anyone interested in being here, either as a student or volunteer, we try and liberate the imagination for everyone or just
enjoy each others company even if that is just an opportunity to share a cup of tea.” Our own Tewkesbury, Church Street, Auctioneer Beau Howell will have just sold a signed print from the actor Mark Rylance who starred in the film The BFG donated to raise funds for the project, but due to our early deadline, we cannot report the sum achieved at the auction. However, you can find out more at www.thebutterflygarden.org or follow on Twitter @BFGCheltenham, or on Facebook /butterflygardencheltenham or just call 01452 713068.

TEWKESBURYS ALLEYS AND COURTS DEFINED Following on from our article on project Alleycat, Historian, Steve Goodchild has penned this article, which explains some of the history behind the towns walkways together with some vintage photographs.
The local rule of thumb is that courts are private and alleys are public. Also, Alleys are public rights of way paved with Staffordshire blue brick. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule! This isn’t a guide to understanding differences; nothing is that simple. For instance, Walls Court is an alley and Care’s Alley is a court. These are just two examples. There are lots more. The courts and alleys, which were far more numerous then, seem to have been paved with stone as part of the general paving of the town, probably following an Act of Parliament in 1786 for ‘paving, lighting, cleaning and repairing the streets, lanes, ways, passages and places of the town. This is when serious attempts were made to get rid of open drains. Eighty or ninety years later, the Council repaved the alleys which were their responsibility, the public rights of way, with
newly-available hardwearing, hygienic, blue bricks. Stone paving can still be seen in most of the private courts. Walls Court was closed at the Oldbury end until in 1890 Mr Morgan complained to the Council about the state of the paving. Not missing a chance, the Council resolved that ‘if the owners would throw it open to the public and abandon their claim to keep it as a private court the authority could consider the request’. This must have been agreed, and the court, nor renamed, was paved with blue bricks. Care’s Alley merits a little more research. This is named after William Care, butcher. The front building is appropriately now Halford’s butchers. In the 1890s, all the property in Care’s Alley was owned by the Tewkesbury Brewery Company (the ‘front house’ was then the Forester’s Arms). In 1892 the Inspector of Nuisances ordered them to make improvements.
They claimed that they should be made at public expense, presumably using the Walls Court precedent. This seems to have worked, because the paving is blue brick. In 1938, the Surveyor reported that a door had been fixed at the end of
the alley. It was resolved that as the council paved the alley and it had been designated a public highway the door should be removed. What happened next isn’t clear, but today there’s a door there now, and one at the Red Lane end. The

The next property we feature is the Coffee House at the Cross. Today Prezzo Restaurant occupy the ground floor
but the comparison is strikingly similar, apart from a missing chimney stack to the right on the roof, little has changed, thankfully.
Our last view is of 57 Barton Street which used to trade as W H Wilkins a tea dealer, baker and grocer. Today the property is home to Autospares, our comparison shows the addition of some authentic looking tudor planking and a larger bay type window. The earlier photo shows some advertising for
Hovis bread, and current owner Mark Rose tells us that in certain light conditions it is still possible to read the wording where it had been before. We would like to thank local historian Derek Round for supplying us with the historical material that we have used to compile this feature.

November 19th, represented a happy milestone for Taxi Company owner Dianne Davies, as she celebrated 21 years of ownership of the town’s oldest private hire company, Avonside. Di bought the business in 1995, from former owner, Dennis Horsley after working for him. She told us that, the following twenty plus years of success has been achieved by her team of careful, and caring drivers, and her loyal customers, all of whom she is very fond. Over the years Avonside have safely transported people from all walks of life including children from local schools, holiday makers, evening trippers and some well known celebrities including Bruce Forsythe, Dennis Waterman, Michael Portillo, Bill Oddie and Fred Dineage just to name a few. Di said, “I really want to thank all my customers and drivers, and I would like to add, that I am looking forward to a major new step forward
for Avonside that will happen in the next few weeks and Tewkesbury Direct readers will be first to know.” Local resident Rosa Salvatore told us “Di and
the service from Avonside is truly amazing.” So if you need a taxi over the Christmas period give Di and her team a call on 01684 273273.

DENNIS HORSLEY Sadly, Dennis Horsley passed away on the 14th November 2016, so I would like to dedicate my 21 years to him. For teaching me and giving me the opportunity in life that Avonside has given me. To the first Avon 1, with love from the second Avon 1. God bless Dennis. Di Davies.
For those who knew Dennis, his funeral will take place at Cheltenham Crematorium on the 15th December at 3.15 pm.

On the approach to Christmas many of us will be ordering goods over the internet , which is very convenient saving valuable time and also money on transport costs, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. You need to be mindful of what information you are supplying please take a look at the advice below. Proper internet security can help protect you from fraud. As your options for banking and purchasing online grow, so does your need to safeguard your privacy and security while using the internet on your personal computer, tablet or mobile device. Online security can be as simple as frequently reviewing your bank accounts to stay on top of things and making sure you report any fraudulent transactions promptly. But what else should you do to stay safe online or when using a mobile device? The following tips can help you protect yourself and your money. 1. Use strong passwords for all your accounts. A strong password is one that is not easily guessed by a human or computer and will have 8 or more characters, including letters, numbers and symbols. Make sure to use different user IDs and passwords for your financial accounts and for any other sites you use online. 2. Don't use any part of your National Insurance number or Driver number as a password or personal identification number (PIN). If someone gains access to this information, it will be among the first things they use to try to get into your account. 3. Don't respond to emails that claim to be from your bank (or any other company) requesting your account details. No bank is ever likely to approach you this way to ask for personal information. 4. Be wary of email attachments and free software from unknown sources. You could end up exposing your computer (and the information on it) to online fraud and theft. 5. Be mindful of how much personal information you share on social networking sites. The more you post about yourself, the easier it might be for someone to use the information you post to access your accounts, steal your identity and more. 6. Be careful about what (and where) you click online. Look for security-enabled website addresses that start with "https:" (the extra "s" indicates security).
