Local drone pilot Jordan Robinson has used his skills to enable us to take a fresh look at historic Puckrup Hall, near Tewkesbury. The hall, which is now a Hilton Hotel, was built in the late 18th century, and the painting (right) show a romanticised view from the period, looking west towards the Malverns. An excellent example of Regency draughtsmanship, it shows the house and parkland in perspective from the air. The picture currently hangs in the hotel reception, and we thank General Manager Tim Bowler for permission to reproduce it here. Keith Hill, of Hill View Lakes, gave Jordan permission to fly from his property, to recreate the scene as it is today. Jordan’s business drone specialises in day and night-time shots like these, and is insured and experienced to undertake commercial commissions. For details visit the company website www.dr-oneav.com

La Jolie Ronde Languages for Children has been crowned Best National Activity for 5-12 year olds for the 3rd year running in the prestigious International children’s awards “What’s On 4 Juniors Awards 2016”. Aurore Chatron-Michaud who runs French and Spanish classes for 5-12 year olds in the Tewkesbury area said "We are absolutely delighted to win this Award for the 3rd year running. “It makes it even more special as it’s the parents and children who have voted for us. Learning a second language comes easy to very young children therefore it is the ideal time to familiarise them with sounds and patterns of a new language and culture. “My classes, which will start again from September, are designed to encourage a positive approach to language learning and the emphasis isn’t on reading and

TRAINS AND TEDDY BEARS The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is running its popular ‘Teddy Bear Tuesdays’ throughout August. Every child who brings along a teddy to travel on the award-winning line will receive a free activity book and crayons, and can join the Teddy Bears’ picnic at Winchcombe Station. La Jolie Ronde has been successfully leading the way in early language learning to nursery and primary aged children, throughout the UK and Ireland, for over 30 years. The La Jolie Ronde methodology of language teaching includes immersion in French and Spanish from the very beginning, lots of repetition from week to week introducing the target language through fun games, songs and activities. WILDLIFE ART GOES ON DISPLAY Sir Peter Scott described Charles Tunnicliffe as ‘the greatest wildlife artist of the twentieth century’. Tunnicliffe was a prolific and hugely influential artist, and a unique selection of his work will go on show at ‘Nature In Art’ this Summer. An exhibition of specially selected paintings has opened at Wallsworth Hall and runs until Sunday 4th September. Nature In Art is just off the A38 between Tewkesbury and Gloucester. The importance of good staff In all businesses well, trained, highly motivated staff who really care about the service they deliver is fundamental, writes Peter Badham. I am delighted to report this month that Badham Pharmacy was presented with the 15 year long service award at the Investors in People International Award Ceremony. The Company had been nominated by Marian Moir, the account manager for IIP South Of England. The event was held at the Old Billingsgate market in London in a spectacular evening of celebration. Badham Pharmacy first achieved the prestigious IIP award in 1999, and has recently been awarded silver in recognition of the outstanding performance of the company. This award has special significance for us , because my mother Mrs Jean Badham, who sadly died earlier this year, put her heart and soul into IIP. She believed that IIP is the cornerstone of any well-run company, our staff are our biggest asset - and she was absolutely right.

The Tiffin Club was formed in 2006 by former MP John Barrett, Michael fabricant MP and Keith Vaz MP. The aim is not only to applaud the quality of South Asian food in Britain, but also to raise money for charity. This year the Tiffin Cup competition was in aid of World Vision and Water Aid. Rajshahi owner Naz Uddin was delighted when Tewkesbury MP Lawrence Robertson nominated his High Street restaurant for a Tiffin Award. Last month Naz travelled to Bellamy’s in London’s Parliament Street for the competition finals. There the Rajshahi received a ‘Highly Commended’ certificate, and Naz was also presented with a commemorative embroidered apron to mark his achievements. Celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott was on hand to congratulate Naz and other restaurateurs from all over the country.

Street market raises £3500 Last month’s Overbury Street Market, held in the picturesque Bredon Hill Village, raised £3500 for local good causes. The rain held off, and in two busy hours hundreds of people flocked to Church Row, in the shadow of St Faith’s and Overbury Court, to take advantage of the bargains on offer. Local artists and crafts people were also selling their wares, the ‘Going For A Song’ antiques stall was as popular as ever - as were the famous bacon butties, Spot Loggins ice cream and refreshments in Berkeley House garden. Entertainment was provided by local musician Mike Weaver. Next year’s event will be held on Saturday 8th July. For further details visit www.overbury.org

SHOOTING ON THE INCREASE As we deal with more than 4,000 wildlife casualties every year at Vale Wildlife Hospital, we are used to seeing just about every injury imaginable, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. Not much surprises us any more but we have been shocked at the recent rise in the number of animals coming through our doors due to being shot. Some species can be legally shot at certain times of the year but there are many species which have full legal protection and to shoot them at any time of the year is a criminal offence. This doesn’t seem to deter some trigger-happy people who, for some reason, seem to get pleasure from shooting animals. Pigeons, gulls, squirrels, blackbirds, sparrowhawks, buzzards, ducks, swans and many more species including a goshawk have all been admitted to Vale over the years with a much higher number of incidents over the last couple of months than is usual for this time of year. I just hope that this trend is not set to continue. I would like to pay tribute to Les Stocker, a pioneer in wildlife rehabilitation, who died suddenly on July 16th at the age of 73. Anyone involved in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation anywhere in the world will almost certainly have heard of

䡵 Shot in buzzard wing

Les Stocker, founder of St Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital, based in Haddenham in the UK. His story has been replicated many, many times since he took in his first casualty in 1978. At that time, wildlife rehabilitation in the UK was virtually unknown and it was commonplace for an injured wild animal to be ‘put out of its misery’ as nobody had the knowledge, the time or the facilities to try to save them and not very many people really cared about the number of animals suffering, mainly because of us. Les and his wife Sue cared enough to try to help the wildlife that nobody else would and that is where it all began. Today, Tiggywinkles is the largest wildlife teaching hospital around, treating thousands of casualties every year and training many

other people in what is now a recognised profession – wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. My story was almost identical to this when 6 years later in 1984 I was presented with an injured tawny owl that had been hit by a car. There was no internet in those days so I couldn’t Google ‘How do I treat an injured owl?’ All I could do was to visit my local library, where I found a book called ‘Something In A Cardboard Box’ by Les Stocker. I read it from cover to

cover and I was hooked – that is when Vale Wildlife Hospital was born. 32 years later, we too have one of the busiest and wellrespected wildlife hospitals in the country, treating thousands of casualties every year. Les was my inspiration and I can honestly say that Vale Wildlife Hospital would not exist today had it not been for the reading of that book. Les has been an inspiration to me and many hundreds, probably thousands of people. Caroline Gould

with John Dixon, Tewkesbury Historical Society The opening of the missing link was thrown the spotlight on the enigmatic building which we call the ‘Gazebo’, writes John Dixon. It reminds us that this bit of the river bank was once part of the garden of the building on Church Street which is now the YMCA. When the town was planned in the Middle Ages land, was allocated in burgage plots, possessing 50 foot frontages on one of the three main streets with land for food production stretching 200 feet to the rear. This plot was appropriately known as ‘Avonbank’, accommodating tanneries historically, until in 1878 when a boot and shoe factory was opened in the grounds. This plot was bought by Walter Jackson, a shirt manufacturer, who manufactured them until 1916. He must also have built the summer house which is included in the 1909 Land Tax survey but there was no mention of the boathouse in the 1991 photograph. In 1916 the property was sold off in parts and the YMCA opened in the big house in 1917 while the factory building was occupied by different businesses one of which was Fawcett’s in recent years. One wonders if the Gazebo would make a fine café to enhance the tourist appeal of our Riverside Walk.

S.R. TYRES RIDE IN AND RIDE AWAY!

Broadway’s Edwardian Edifice starts to take shape In an earlier issue we ran an advertisement for the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway's share issue to raise money for their expansion to Broadway. After 2 months of trading the issue has raised over £600,000 of private investment which is a massive result. Building work has been taking place at Broadway to replace the Great Western Railway Station that was demolished in the 1960’s. The Railway rightly, decided to build a like for like replica of the original station and the structure is growing gracefully from the ground up. The Broadway gang of volunteer builders are painstakingly reproducing the style and the

ambiance of the original. The wrought iron lattice roof and canopy is being rebuilt on site at

Toddington by craftsman, Ian Carpenter. The technique of its construction is a lost art

using hot rivetting rather than welding to produce the structure. This type of fabrication was commonplace in the Edwardian era and lead to the construction of the magnificent glass palaces that included Cheltenham’s Winter Gardens and London’s Crystal Palace. Here are some photos showing the rise of the new Broadway from a brownfield site.

NEW DEFIBRILLATOR FOR THE ANCHOR INN A vital defibrillator, will be installed in the courtyard of the Anchor Inn, in Quay Street. Money for the device has been raised and secured by Vicky Halling with a series of raffles and events. This is not the first device in the town she has helped provide as she played a leading role in the installation of another at Tewkesbury Rugby Club. Vicky’s drive for helping came after losing her brother Colin, to sudden adult death syndrome in 2012. She felt compelled to do something so that similar tragedies could be averted. The defibrillator will be available 24 hours every day behind the metal gates at the Anchor as they are closed at night but never locked, and a special training day will be held by the NHS first responder team at the pub on 19th September at 6.30pm, and anyone interested in finding out how to assist in an emergency is welcome to attend. Vicky would like to say thanks to all the local people and licensee Andy Jones who have helped make the installation possible Community responder officer, Kevin Dickens,

added “We would like to encourage as many people as possible to come

and learn these life saving skills.”

TEWKESBURY WALKING CLUB HOLIDAY IN SELVA DI VAL GARDENA, ITALIAN DOLOMITES 35 members of Tewkesbury Walking Club pictured in front of the wonderful Hotel Astor in Selva Di Val Gardena in the Italian Dolomites. They travelled out in late June for a 9 day holiday. They split into three groups, the strongest walkers enjoyed high level day walks, usually walking at up to 2500 metres (these walkers are pictured at the summit of Rasciesa Di Fuori at 2281 metres) the next group also enjoyed high level walks, but at a gentler pace, and shorter lower level walks for those whose ability to walk at higher levels are behind them. Most of the uphill was made by the many lifts within the three villages

that make up Val Gardena. The Alpine flower meadows, that lie beneath the rugged Dolomite peaks were at their best and the group marvelled at the spectacular variety of flowers.

The sun shone most days and even at above 2000 metres the temperature was into the mid 20's and everyone enjoyed a perfect walking holiday.

AN AUGUST MAKEOVER with Emma Lawson of Ell Hair Salon This month Ron Bird took time out from running her B & B at Willow Cottage, Shuthonger to receive a makeover from Emma. Firstly Emma applied i-prime mixed with i-tint light to Ron’s face to even out the skin tone and to give a natural glow, then i-fix light was applied to seal. For Ron’s eyes i-colour purple quartz was used on the lid, and then eyelined with i-smoulder amethyst, followed by i-flutter black mascara, and to enhance the eyes i-groom was used on her eyebrows. Emma brushed i-blossom peony on Ron’s cheeks and applied i-slick cashmere to her lips, to complete her new look Ron’s hair was styled using Eufora elixir volume shampoo. Ron was very pleased with her new look and said “I want to go out now, and I don't think any painting will be done today!” If you would like to be considered for a makeover by Emma give her a call on 01684 273005 or pop in and see her at the salon.

Keeping up with the challenges of veterinary medicine Here at Folly Gardens we know how important it is to keep up with latest developments and research findings in the veterinary world. All our vets are governed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and as such we work hard to continually develop our professional skills by attending lectures, practical workshops and conferences as well as investing in new kit and equipment to further and maintain our high standards. I’ve seen a few cases this month that made me smile...and what has made me even more cheery is that we have been able to ‘fix’ our patients with minimal pain and risk – whereas even a few years ago it would have been very different. The name of the game this month: ‘What can I eat that the vet will have to fish out?’ Dogs across the county have been joining in! Socks, cotton reels, lolly sticks (even bits of a bra!) have all been safely removed using our gastroscope, a long bendy camera we can put down into the stomach. In the majority of cases it allows us to retrieve said ‘treasure’ without ever having to pick up a scalpel. Result – happy vet, happy hound and happy owners. 佢 Lizzie and Brad have just removed a sock In our continued commitment to the advancement and improvement of veterinary care, our latest purchase has been our ‘keyhole’ surgery equipment. from a dog's stomach! ‘key hole’ or laparoscopic surgery has many advantages over more traditional surgical approaches, minimising patient discomfort, improving recovery times and allowing a greater range of procedures to be carried out in house. So far, we have used it to great success in our spays and neutering’s (it’s great for playing ‘hunt the testicle’ in the occasional undescended case!) as well as allowing us to take sick patients more safely to surgery for biopsies and exploratory surgery. keeping our knowledge up to date allows us to gives greater patient care, and this month I have been working closely again with our Chartered Physiotherapist. We see many cats and dogs with mobility and arthritis issues and find that a holistic, whole body approach is giving us the best results. We are using the latest ideas and techniques in physio, acupuncture, diet and chronic pain management to give our patients back their quality of life. All in all, it has been a busy and enjoyable month of learning and inspiration, of working together to share skills, attending courses to learn new ones, and investing in the future of your pet’s care. It’s exciting being at the front of veterinary care and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I Saw a Man by Owen Sheers PB £7.99 When this book was first published in hardback it had such an anonymous jacket that many fans of Owen Shears may have missed it. "I Saw a Man" is now out in paperback with a strong cover and as one quote reads, it is without doubt “a tense, intelligent pageturner.” This is indeed an intellegently told story of Michael, a young widower, whose bride is killed by an American drone strike in Pakistan and how he tries to get his life back together by moving back to London, and close to Hampstead Heath. His affluent neighbours, banker Josh and his wife Samantha and their two daughters are very welcoming and friendly. Both use him in their own way but this relationship works for all. Life progresses, Michael jogs on the Heath with Josh, pursues fencing at a nearby sports club and resumes his writing career. He is often invited round next door. One day Michael, seeking to borrow something and finding the neighbouring house unlocked and no one apparently at home, ventures inside and eventually upstairs. The events that transpire change the lives of each and everyone of them. It is a tense tale with an evolving plot

and a storyline which is best discovered by reading the book! Owen Shears is well known as a poet , do read "Skirrid Hill" his best known collection of verse. He has a great gift with words, a description that fits many a poet who also ventures into novels; this is very evident in his first work of fiction, 'Resistance', a Welsh war-time story. In this, his latest and so far, somewhat overlooked novel the author is showing us his literary skills whilst also finely dissecting the lives of the three main adult characters. Also he adds an additional storyline, that of a USAF officer, Daniel, the 'pilot' of the drone that killed Michael's wife and how that mistake also affects his life and marriage. This trans-Atlantic element supplements the main Hampstead storyline and rewards us, the reader with a great read. Selected by: Ian B. Nicholson Alison’s Bookshop & Music Room Tewkesbury

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY BALANCE We live in rapidly changing times, even uncomfortable times when you look at what is happening around the world in Turkey or Nice or Belgium to mention only a few, writes local counsellor and therapist David Slater. I know there are many around who feel that they have something to be unhappy about. I have my moments too. After all, we are only human! So I will happily tell you that it is not just you who feels like this. It is many of us. People of every part of society. We are being fed bad news constantly by the national papers and the radio and TV channels. We hear about the youths that have gone off the rails - seldom do we hear of the many who make a great contribution to society through their hard work and natural concern. We hear about those who fail and seldom know of those who succeed. We are given so much to worry about should we be sensitive types and what we should celebrate is kept under wraps. If we are not careful we can allow ourselves to follow the trend and only see the bad, only feel the bad, only state the bad. And if there is no bad we must have got it wrong so we will feel bad about that! There ARE people facing difficulties at work,

in family relationships, people who are ill or caring for those they love. There are those who have financial troubles. I do not underestimate any of these. What I say is let us try and maintain a healthy balance so that we don’t all get bogged down and sink without trace. For the vast majority of us, if we are honest, life is pretty good and we need to see that goodness and acknowledge it. For example, I wake in a morning to the sound of almost silence (well, where I am I can hear the M5) BUT I hear no bombs or AK47s being fired. I do not hear the drones surveying the sky above me. I wake in the morning to a kitchen which provides me with all that I need for a healthy breakfast to start my day. I live in a comparatively free country. Can YOU think of GOOD things in YOUR life? I would like you to do something for me. I want you to buy a new notebook. One with a fancy cover would be good although you could

always stick a favourite photo on the cover. This is going to be our BOOK OF THE GOOD. I will do it too ! Or you can write on small pieces of paper and store them in a coffee jar - the JAR OF GOOD. When anything good happens, or a good thought comes into your mind or you see, eat, smell, touch, hear and say something good WRITE IT DOWN! Include the good things that happen to you and the good things you do for yourself and for others. It doesn’t need to make sense to anyone but you. We so easily tend to forget the good and remember only the bad. It is almost as if we have been programmed to behave like that. Time we fed in another new programme which will retrain us to focus on the positive and work with this new found positivity in every area of our life. If you have a moment when you feel down pick up your book or jar and refresh your mind of all the good things. So this week remember the good. It is the most powerful crane to lift your spirits!

NEWTOWN W.I Our July meeting began with a display of the costumes made by members for the Medieval Parade. We had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were enthused with ideas to improve our entry next year. Then Grace (a trained Hearing Dog) demonstrated her amazing skills alerting Merleen Watson to alarms, timers, door bells etc. as well as exploring the hall where we meet. Merleen is profoundly deaf and explained that it costs £40.000 to train and support a dog for 10 years. Hearing Dogs relies on public donations and fund raising but a dog can transform the lives of their partners young and old. For more information visit www.hearingdogs.org.uk. There is no meeting in August. On September 14th we have a social evening of a Bring and Share Supper and Bingo! Visitors and new members are welcome. Telephone 01684 292067 for more information.

TEWKESBURY VIPS SUMMER OUTING

The Good Food Stop

At the beginning of June Tewkesbury VIPs enjoyed a cream tea on board the steam train from Toddington to Cheltenham Racecourse. Two wheelchair minibuses plus the Baptist Church bus, driven by volunteer Grahame Buckland, conveyed the visually impaired members, volunteers and guests from Tewkesbury. Quite a logistical challenge! One “guest“ was Eric, a Guide Dog in training, with his handler from Twyning, Brenda Meads. Eric had yet to experience a bus and a railway coach let alone a fully functional steam engine. All part of his personal development. The volunteers at the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Steam Railway catered for us splendidly with a specially adapted coach for those with mobility difficulties as well as the delicious scones, cream, jam and tea. Occasions like this are very much appreciated by club members, many of whom are unable to get out of their homes unassisted. The outing was supported by generous donations from Tewkesbury Baptist

The next property to undergo our scrutiny is 12 and 13 High Street, which traded as John

displayed a Royal Crest above the window, it is still there today but had not been put up at the

time of the early photo. Largely the shop is still the same as it was.

the noted specialist Rug retailer J.W.Jennings which sells handmade rugs and the most beau-

sharp eyed will notice the tiled step that remains as it was to this day.

Lastly we arrive at 133 and 134 which was formerly Lemuel Jones Mulliners and Drapers

THE BATTLES OF THE SOMME, AUGUST 1916 After July, never again was a month to consume so many British lives –the 196,240 deaths were reduced to 75,279 and Tewkesbury deaths from 12 to 8. (Battles are no respecters of dates and it makes military sense to extend August to the 3 September). Progress at the Somme was always slow but the battles of August reflected a consolidation of ground captured in the face of ferocious German counter attacks. No new battles started in August but both sides wished to command the higher ground.

L/Cpl Dickinson Sheldon [V] was one of “a large number of men buried by HE (High Explosive) shell”. His death was not confirmed until 3 March and his body - like so many was never recovered. (His brother, a Regular was badly wounded in August and was tended by Tewkesbury Nurse, Miss M.E. Merell.) Boer War veteran Sgt. L. V.

Mann [R] suffered a similar fate when a local attack tried to capture a remaining German trench. The 10th Gloucesters were still trying to capture that same concrete strongpoint and Pte. James Jeynes [V] disappeared in another unsuccessful attack. After fighting in all the major battles of 1914-15, what was left of our regular 1st Gloucesters had been rested until 20 August, when more troops were needed to hold Pozieres. L/Cpl. F. Dickenson [R] disappeared in yet another German counter attack. On 25 August the 5th Glosters were thrown into the attack and Lt. Lionel Watson Moore [TA] was killed

somewhat heroically leading a trench raid. (His body, however, disappeared in the second Battle of the Somme, 1918.) On the last day of the battle, back at Delville Wood on 3 September Tewkesbury lost its first conscript, Pte. H. A. Greening [C].

Lt. L.W. Moore Gunner William Henry Jones [V] then suc-

cumbed after fighting through the 65-day slog on the Somme. The last August death was that of Cpl. A. H. Askew [TA] during a diversionary attack to the north at Fromelles. Using less experienced Territorial soldiers to assist Australians, it was a costly failure. Yet the 65 days had resulted in some success – the capture of the higher ground. The advance, however, had to continue for another 76 days, costing the lives of 8 more local men. John Dixon. [For more information, see THS Publication 9, “A Noble band of Heroes”]. The bins before

It is rare to experience, that little bit of extra service these days, but to Emma Hicks’ delight she told us of how the local waste and recycling team had taken the trouble to empty the tiny wheelie bin used by her daughter Emily for her Dolly, after it had been left by her next to the family bins in Northway. Emma says thankyou for making Emily’s day.

PUMP HUNT FOR SEWAGE STATION OWNERS Thames Water is appealing to customers to help identify privately owned sewage pumping stations. The utility, which serves 15 million customers across London and the Thames Valley, will take responsibility for around 4,000 pumping in October 2016, but needs to track down 1,800 currently off its radar. New legislation means sewage pumping stations, which power wastewater away from properties and out into the public sewer pipe network, currently owned and maintained by customers will become legally owned and operated by the local water company. The pumping stations are found in all shapes and sizes, and can be in places where there are a number of properties needing to connect to the public sewer network. Customers will know they have one as they’ll be paying to maintain and power them. This is really good news for customers. We’d urge anyone who thinks they may have one to get in touch so we can check they are eligible for the transfer of ownership. In some cases, as well as electricity savings, maintaining and replacing pumps can cost thousands of pounds so it’s an excellent deal for them.

SOLVE IT WITH

The bins after

We believe we know where approximately half of the stations we need to take over are, but really need help to find the other 1,800. Please get in touch if you think this applies to you and we can take on the responsibility forever. Anyone with a private pumping station can make Thames Water aware at thameswater.co.uk/pum phunt.

THE MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL PARADE 2016 Masses turned out to watch the annual Medieval parade work its way through Tewkesbury. The sun came out and giant characters, animals, musicians and costumed local groups, gave an unrivalled display of colour, and imagination to a delighted audience. Our photographer was there to record the event and we have put together this gallery of photographs from the day, perhaps some readers may find themselves in this magazine or on our website at www.tewkesburydirect.co.uk where we have the pictures we took that we did not have room for in print.

TEWKESBURY’S OLDEST HOLIDAY LET During the Medieval Festival, The Landmark Trust, owners of the Abbey Gatehouse, opened it for public display.

In January 1539, on the orders of King Henry VIII, the Abbot of Tewkesbury and the monks of his Chapter accepted the dissolution of their monastery and surrendered their property. The buildings of the great Benedictine Abbey were divided by the administrators ("the King’s Visitors") into two categories: "superstitious buildings to be destroyed" and those that were "convenient to be preserved". The abbey church fell into the former group but was rescued by the townspeople, who declared that it was their only parish church; accordingly it was transferred to them for the value of its lead and bells – £483. The other "superstitious" buildings were demolished. The second group consisted of domestic and agricultural buildings that could foreseeably come in useful to a new owner. These included not only the Abbey’s kitchen, pantry, bakehouse, brewhouse, stables, slaughterhouse and barns, but also the buildings called the Newark (the "new work"

dating from about 1500, which were incorporated with the Abbot’s lodging to form what is now the Abbey House) and the "great gate entering the court, with the lodging over the same". Although a gatehouse must have stood in this position for centuries, in 1540 the one that survives today was relatively new. Stylistic details indicate that it was probably built either just before or soon after

1500. The upper chamber served as a lodging, probably for one of the officers of the Abbey, lay or monastic, or perhaps one of the "guests" who crowded many abbeys of the time. After its restoration the Gatehouse seems to have settled back into its previous ornamental but empty existence, serving as a rather grand lodge to Abbey House. Then a neighbour of the Gatehouse suggested

that the Landmark Trust might be interested in it; she knew that difficulty of access would not deter it from taking on a good building – and she was right. A lease was duly

negotiated, and Landmark took over the Gatehouse in 1986. The Landmark Trust rescues old buildings, restores them and lets them for holidays. The

Abbey Gatehouse sleeps two and can be booked for holidays. To find out more click onto www.landmarktrust.org. uk.

TEWKESBURY CRICKET CLUB The Club held a reception on June 29th to mark the completion of the Pavilion Balcony Extension Project where the guests were able to see the improvements and also the junior coaching session. President Hilary Caudle welcomed the visitors who included the Borough Mayor and Town Mayor together with representatives of other sponsors Summerfield Trust and the ECB. Hilary told the guests that in 1993 when we opened the present pavilion which replaced

an existing dilapidated structure the Club had just started a third team but had little or no junior section and no-one envisaged that the club would grow to the extent it has. Progress on and off the field since that time has been enormous. The club currently runs three Saturday sides, one Sunday side, a midweek team and junior age groups at U11, U13, U15 and this year U16. The Pavilion is virtually in constant use throughout the summer and it had become evident to the committee that change would be needed in order to cater for the increased numbers and usage as well as to improve the safety of the building. In 2013 the current development team headed up by Geoff Haines was charged with planning and delivering the extension project vision first mooted by a previ-

ous President Tony Atwell. The end result adds a great deal to the pavilion, does not look out of place and gives great credit to the design team and also to the contractors Scotiabuild for the standard of workmanship. Hilary thanked the guests for sharing in our vision and hoped that they would take back to their organisations the message that their money has been well spent. She told them that the Club will continue to look for ways to develop which may well include a fourth team, a ladies team and further improvement to the fabric of the ground and building and she felt sure that we will be sharing our plans with them in the future. Gwyn Williams Junior Cricket Co-ordinator then gave a full account of the junior coaching sessions and progress of the junior teams.

USO (UNIDENTIFIED SUNKEN OBJECT) FIND FOR SEVERN UNIT MVS When Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service went hunting with their boats outside Avon Lock on the Severn side for a lost propeller from a visiting narrow boat they never expected to discover the most amazing object. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We had been unsuccessfully trawling up and down for some considerable time with our grappling irons as well as searching with our sonar and underwater camera when we unexpectedly hooked something very heavy indeed. With great difficulty we began to pull it to the surface and to our horror we initially thought that it was a UXB.”

BUY THESE As more of it emerged we realised the item was around 12 foot long and was obviously very old. The old timber must have been preserved in the mud in the bottom of the river. Sadly it broke in two whilst being hauled ashore and most of it disappeared back into the river just leaving us with the tip. Our Treasurer and Regional

Roger Workman Cotteswold Dairy – Winner Red Ribbon Awards ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Roger Workman, Chairman of Cotteswold Dairy has beaten hundreds of other nominations from different regions around the UK to be named the Winner of the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at this years Red Ribbon Awards. These are highest and most prestigious accolade to be awarded to Britain’s independent, family‐owned businesses. Now in their 7th year, the Red Ribbon Awards have become the most sought after prize from family businesses around the country. They recognise and celebrate the contribution of families around the UK. Last year the winner of the life time achievement went to Michel Roux Jr at Le Gavroche.

The event took place at Wembley Stadium on the 15th July in the stunning Bobby Moore Suite. Cotteswold Dairy as a business were also thrilled to be shortlisted in the ‘Best of British’ category but with 14 others in the group, this went to Walkers shortbread in Scotland. The judging panel made up of 14 professional advisors and ambassadors commented how Roger showed humility, put others before himself and built

up a successful business over the last 50 years. The judges were impressed how Roger had handled the floods of 2007 and how he was the first to bottle organic milk in glass bottles. They were also mentioned all he does for charity. Sandy Swindon said that the ‘cream really does rise to the top’. Roger and his family who attended the event with him, were quite blown away. Roger went on stage and did a bril-

liant off the cuff speech. He was quite taken aback and thanked the audience for this award. He explained in his speech that he was receiving this award on behalf of all the staff because that it was through all the staff’s hard work, support and determination that the business has grown to be successful. We are immensely proud of Roger and his achievement. Roger Workman with his ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ and his family at the Red Ribbon Awards.

HE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in Tewkesbury and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Mr Franks recalls an instance, the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broke, gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel, estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune.Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find East Midlands Antiques’ representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free valuation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash. So pop along and see us at The Tudor House Hotel. Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance, on one occasion this year, a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available. So on the Wednesday 10th August you have the chance to visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you, specialising in oil paintings, water-colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay up to £2500 paid for these articles.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

FROM CHAPEL TO COAL HOUSE This month we take an easy ‘there and back’ stroll from the historic village of Deerhurst along the banks of the River Severn, writes Jack B. Walker.

Odda’s Chapel, Deerhurst

Parking is available (for a small fee) at Odda’s Chapel, which is in the stewardship of English Heritage. This Saxon chapel was commissioned in 1056 by Earl Odda, and dedicated to the Holy Trinity in memory of his brother Aelfric, who died at the spot. For many years the chapel was used as a cottage. Even older, and equally fascinating, is the ancient Deerhurst Church, which was built in AD 800. There was once a priory here too. Restoration work began in 2007, after the infamous floods. You will note several ‘flood gates’ have been installed here to prevent future inundations.

For the walk, follow the public footpath signs from Odda’s Chapel down to the River Severn (1). Passing a hollow tree on your right, turn left along the river bank (2) and continue to walk ahead following the Severn Way. On the opposite bank you can see moorings and the popular Yew Tree Inn at Chaceley. Keep along the tow path, eventually passing some ponds to the left, with the river still on your right. At the end of the last pond (3) follow the path straight ahead until you reach the Coal House Inn. This hostelry is currently only open on Friday and Saturday evenings and from noon on Sundays.

Turn left on to a lane after the pub (4) and walk ahead until the bend. Go through the gate on the left (5),

cross the field to the river and rejoin the path at point (3). Turn right and retrace your steps back to Odda’s Chapel.

58 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

As a parent or student please take a few minutes to read the below advice which I have divided into useful sections. Out and about on foot • Avoid walking home alone after an evening out. Walk with friends or take a taxi. Be aware of what is going on around you. • Avoid shortcuts in lonely places. Keep to well lit, busy streets. • Always walk facing oncoming traffic so a car cannot pull up behind you. • When approaching your house or halls of residence, have your keys ready so you can enter without delay. • Cover up jewellery, mobile phones, personal music players and keys. • Carry a personal attack alarm. If you are attacked, shout for help as loudly as you can. Try to get to a safe place and call the police. • If you think you’re being followed, walk to the busiest place you can find or knock on a door. Then call the police. • Avoid chatting on your phone or listening to your MP3 player when walking. You are less likely to hear someone coming up behind you. • Consider taking self defence classes – many universities and colleges will run these. Travelling by taxi • Keep the number of a reputable taxi firm with you. Avoid taxi drivers touting for business. • Sit behind the driver and stay aware. • If you feel uneasy, ask to be let out in a busy, well-lit area. If in doubt, don’t get in. On buses and trains • While waiting, stand in a well-lit place near other people. • Sit near the guard or driver and avoid empty carriages.. • Check where the emergency chain or button is located. • If you are being pestered, tell the guard or driver. • Keep your fare money or ticket at hand so you can avoid getting your purse or wallet out in public. • Always keep your belongings close by and your bag and pockets closed. In pubs and clubs • Keep an eye on your friends. • Don’t accept drinks from people you don’t know. • Never leave your drink unattended – it may get ‘spiked’. • If your drink looks or tastes odd, don’t drink it. If you feel unusually ill, seek help from a friend or a member of staff.

• Avoid drinking too much alcohol. If you are under the influence of alcohol, you are more likely to become a victim – or perpetrator of crime. Protecting property 0• When living in halls of residence, always lock your door. • Always lock windows and doors when you go out. In shared accommodation don’t assume someone else will do this. • Keep your front and back doors locked – even when you are in. • Close your curtains and leave the lights on when you are out in the evening. • Remove temptation. Don’t leave valuables, such as your lap top or wallet, in view of a window or within reach of a door. • Use an ultra violet pen or forensic marking product to ‘mark’ all your valuable items. Placestickers on your door and windows to make it clear that your property is marked. • Take extra care in holiday time, when your accommodation is likely to be empty. If you can, take all valuables home.

Tewkesbury Vintage Fair is back at the Watson Hall on Bank Holiday Saturday (27 Aug)with the aim to raise funds for the cancer charity, Hope for Tomorrow, writes Shelby Powell. The charity provides a mobile chemotherapy unit which travels to Tewkesbury hospital to enable patients to receive treatment closer to home. A number of new highlights will enhance a day of nostalgia based in the old music hall on Barton Street. Meet the Lead Historical Re-enactment group who will be dressed in authentic clothing from the 1940’s, and view a small exhibition of ‘fashion on the ration’ women’s clothing. Terry Cox and members of Friends Ukenited will be on hand to lift the spirits of fair goers with a performance of lively ukulele covers of vintage hits. All the usual attractions will be back at the fair including live music from Betsy Harmony and Anne Rayleen, vintage stalls, fashion show, tea room, plus beauty parlour run by the Yesterday Darling. Entry is £1 and under 12’s free. Further information www.tewkesburyvintagefair.co.uk The evening event is being promoted by Rob Farley of All About Swing. The ‘Hope For Tomorrow’ Charity Swing Dance is guaranteed to liven up the pace. Tickets are available via the website at www.allaboutswing.co.uk at £5 per person. Contact Rob on 07807033385 for further information.
