The original publication of this novel was the perfect excuse for me to correct an omission in my reading. It is a strange thing about running a bookshop that sometimes you miss something you have wanted to read.

There are always new temptations!

Elizabeth Strout's Pulitzer Prize winning novel "Olive Kitteridge" was exactly that. A copy had been sitting in a pile to be read for far longer than I intended. I had enjoyed her two more recent novels, so that when her sequel "Olive Again" came up that was the perfect justification to address that oversight.

The two go together so well, immersing myself in Olive over two volumes was a rare treat.

For those who have read the first sampling I recommend succumbing to the second as we learn so much more about Olive, this unusual, retired Maths teacher, as the years pass on by. The stories, as in many ways that is what both of these novels are, recount the events in Olive's life, giving vignettes on her, her husband Henry, son Christopher and the neighbourhood and locals of Crosby, Maine; a fictitious town with a great mixture of events and odd balls!

The writing is smooth storytelling, well written, readable and enjoyable. The town of Crosby comes alive, [and if travel was

only permitted], a destination you would include in any visit to Maine; if only it were there! The seasons are described as we observe Olive's life in retirement, her second marriage; all related over a period of several years. However Olive's life is not the only one we witness. In both books she appears as a character in chapters about other residents, sometimes being mentioned only in passing.

Like any town, let alone an American one, Crosby has its fair share of unusual characters and households, some of the visitors are also very individualistic. All of these blend together to make Olive's unusual approach to life and to the people she meets, or has taught, come alive. There are odd moments of quiet humour which will bring a smile or a chuckle. This author has a great ability to entertain her readers both by storyline and with an ability to please her followers.

Steam railway back on track The award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) is set to reopen, on Tuesday 13th April, coincidentally marking the 40th anniversary since the railway company was formed.

Trains will resume following the same Covidsecure precautions as last year, when the railway safely carried families by steam train through the Cotswold countryside between Cheltenham and Broadway.

The resumed service will again comprise prebookable round trips of the 14-mile railway, starting and finishing at Toddington.

Trains will start and terminate at Toddington station, (GL54 5DT) and will only be pre-bookable online at www.gwsr.com.

Services will run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays with Covid restrictions in place.

These restrictions are expected to continue until late June, depending on further Government guidance.

Trains will comprise six carriages, five of which are of the ‘oldfashioned’ corridor compartment type.

Compartments can be booked to seat a minimum of two and up to six people, accessed through a sliding door from the side corridor.

This creates a natural

‘bubble’ for a family to enjoy.

An open coach is also provided for individuals and couples who are socially distanced and are required to wear a mask unless eating.

Meanwhile a very limited number of volunteers have been working on the railway undertaking essential maintenance tasks, including preparing locomotives for their annual insurance examinations.

As restrictions are eased a greater number

of volunteers will be making preparations for the coming resumption of train services.

Volunteer Chairman Richard Johnson said: “I can’t think of a better way to celebrate our 40th Anniversary.

“Our company was formed in 1981, after British Railways had abandoned the route and removed all of the track and infrastructure.

“Many people thought the task of rebuilding the railway was an impossible dream.

“But without the vision and determination of those early volunteers, we wouldn’t have the wonderful Cotswolds railway we have today and which people will be once again be able to enjoy, from 13th April.”

AMAZING LOCAL SUPPORT FOR RAILWAY INN The Railway Inn Marquee Appeal was launched on Friday 12th March by one of Ripple's local village residents with the intention of helping the pub open on Monday 12th April.

Jon Lewis, from the Railway Inn, said: "within 48 hours, the amount raised by our local community and friends of the Railway Inn, Ripple totalled £3,400."

Everyone involved has been battling their own problems as they face Covid lockdown but as in previous appeals friends and customers rallied together to show their love and support for the pub, and to ensure Jon and Roger keep it open.

"Young and old, local and distant have come together to make this happen and as a result a marquee has been purchased for the grand re opening on Monday 12th April," Jon added. (As we go to press. Date may change according to government advice).

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

THE ANCIENT DOG BARK Many of our medieval ‘highways’ have disappeared from today’s maps, writes Jack B. Walker, but there is an old survivor right on our doorstep.

Dog Bark Lane, an ancient byway which runs between Swindon Village and Elmstone Hardwicke, was once the ‘main road’ from the once insignificant market town of Cheltenham to the important regional centre of Tewkesbury.

How things have changed - but walking this often forgotten and mostly quiet lane does give one a sense of stepping back into the past.

Our route starts from the little church in Swindon Village, with its Norman six-sided tower.

There is limited onstreet parking here, but there are car parks at the nearby playing fields.

Leaving the church on your left (1) walk along Church Road, ignoring turnings to the left and right, to go straight ahead into Stanton’s Drive. At the end of the road, after passing the allotments on your right (2) walk into a field. You are now following the Cheltenham Circular Footpath to Elmstone.

Keep the hedge on your right, and at the end of it head diagonally

left across the field, and cross over the brook.

Stay on the path to meet hedge-lined Dog Bark Lane (3) and cross over it into another field.

Keep the hedge to your right until you meet cross tracks (4). Go straight ahead to emerge on to a tarmac road known as ‘The Green’.

Walk ahead, passing Chosen View Farm, to reach Elmstone Hardwicke’s 15th Century church, which is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene.

The churchyard is a lovely quiet spot for reflection, and has one or two benches for relaxation.

Just after the church, the village street bends sharply to the right, near old school buildings, and then to the left. At this junction walk ahead into the splendidly named Lowdilow Lane (5).

You will pass several more modern homes, then a farm on your left.

Look out for the obvious entrance to the byway on your right - (6) - this is Dog Bark Lane. The brook you can some-

䡵 The ancient byway ‘Dog Bark,’ between Swindon Village to Elmstone Hardwicke times see on your left is Wyman’s Brook, which flows through Cheltenham and joins Hyde Brook north of Lowdilow Lane to form the River Swilgate. The Swilgate meanders on, passing Tewkesbury Abbey and the Vineyards before it joins the River Avon.

Follow Dog Bark Lane along its length until you emerge on to Manor Road at Swindon Village (7). Turn left and walk back up the slope to reach the T junction.

Turn right and follow the route back to Swindon Village Church.

There are no opportunities to buy refreshments on this route, so

please make sure you are suitably prepared before setting out. The nearest shops and cafés are in the Kingsditch retail parks on the outskirts of Cheltenham.

The route is mostly flat, but as Dog Bark Lane is a byway it is used by horses and can be muddy at certain times of year.

Spring and Summer entertainment planned for Tewkesbury’ Watson Hall All forthcoming events and reopenings will clearly be subject to Government restrictions and any changes in policy, but in the meanwhile, those who organise events are doing their best to put together schedules for everyone to enjoy.

Becky Blockley, Entertainments Manager for the Town Council, is lining up some great treats for the days ahead at the Watson Hall.

Becky tells us about Bingo Revolution which will take place on Saturday 17th July, doors at 7pm, show at 8pm.

It promises a fun packed evening of laughing, dancing, dabbing and life changing prizes. Similar shows have appeared at venues across the country, including Sheffield, Sunderland, Newcastle, Rugby and Dumfries.

The Show involves top comedian Cal Halbert who has appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, he received four yes’s from the judges, including the thumbs up from Simon Cowell. Calvin will be joined on stage by the queen of Bingo, Granny Fanny and Legendary DJ Jim Slipp.

Cal Halbert will be on number calling duties, Granny Fanny will be handing out the prizes, and Superstar DJ Jim Slipp will be playing smash hits from the 80’s, 90’s, 00’s and the present today. Guests can expect everything from Abba, to Robin S and Beyonce to sing and dance to.

Some of the life changing prizes include, a dinosaur, a kitchen appliance and cold hard cash.

In case of any draws, winners will be decided from some great play offs including, pig throwing, cock fighting, lip sinc battles, and dancing challenges.

Funding Bushley Cricket Club Our pavilion, built in the early 60’s is showing it’s age, despite our ongoing maintenance. Though a lovely building, set among magnificent oak trees, it is struggling to provide suitable facilities for a modern club with both men’s and ladies’ teams.

With this in mind, the committee have taken the first steps towards it’s replacement. Many local players have enjoyed matches at Bushley over the years and we appeal to some of you to support us now if you feel able to.

At this point we are able to attract ‘matched funding’ for the project so the club would benefit by £2 for every £1 we raise using the ‘Crowdfunder’ platform www.crowdfunder.co.uk/bccrebuild, where more information is available. We currently need pledges of support from at least 100 people, rather than donations, though these would also be appreciated. The matched funding would apply to those renewing annual memberships or purchasing drinks tokens to use in the bar when we are allowed to reopen, as well as other pledges.

The club funds have suffered from the covid lockdown so we would be really pleased if anyone would like to sponsor the club or have any other ideas on raising funds. We must emphasise that while we can attract some additional funding, the majority will come from our usual events in the community, to achieve our objectives. Any support, large or small, would be much appreciated.

Assistant Instructor Promotion in Taekwon-Do Two students from the White Tiger Martial Arts Academy based in Tewkesbury have successfully completed their twelve month evaluation programme and been promoted to Assistant Instructors in Taekwon-Do. Robert Clingan, a 1st degree Black Belt and Andrew Etherington, a 1st Kup undertook a Level 1 Assistant Instructor course back in February 2020 before the Corona Virus pandemic took hold. The White Tiger academy provided the course which included Child Safety & Welfare, Communication Skills, Learning Styles, Lesson Preparation & Delivery and Risk Assessments.

They both had to prepare and deliver lessons to both the Junior grade and Senior grade classes. The Corona Virus lockdowns meant that they were both assessed whilst taking virtual

The bus in front – is a train?

Drivers around Cheltenham and the Cotswolds are being confronted by a steam train if they are following one of Marchants buses.

That’s because the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) has helped out Marchants, the 70-yearold Cheltenham-based family coach and holiday travel firm, as the Covid crisis set in. The railway offered storage space for some of the firm’s 40 vehicles – and in exchange, it offered some free ‘bus back’ advertising in exchange.

The dramatic ads, which are on five buses in daily use, show one of the railway’s trains forging through the Cotswold countryside in a photograph taken by volunteer John Lewis and will be in place for the next 12 months.

Explains Craig Robb, Marchants Transport Manager: “Earlier this year, at a time when the Covid crisis started to really bite, we had to take several of our vehicles off the road as business dried up. At the same time, the rent for our Cheltenham depot was doubled to a figure that we simply couldn’t afford.

“We needed to move out quickly but the GWSR – with whom we have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship – stepped in and offered secure space on the for-

mer garden centre site at their Toddington station.

Tewkesbury Bowling Club complete roof repairs following £45,000 grant from environmental trust Tewkesbury Bowling Club has completed work to repair the failing roof of its club house thanks to a £45,000 grant from Enovert Community Trust. The Bowling Club is the second oldest in Gloucestershire having been first established in 1828.

The funding has enabled the club to install a new insulated roof cladding that will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and heating costs over the next 30 years.

The roof was installed by Cheltenham-based Artizan Roofing who completed the project within a month, ensuring the clubhouse was warm and watertight in time for the recent cold winter weather.

John Glass, Secretary at Tewkesbury Bowling Club, said: “The repairs to the roof will give the club confidence to reach out and attract new members, as well as continue the expansion of its activities to serve the local community.

There is hope that the club house will now act as a base to allow us to create links with local youth clubs and schools and diversify the age range of our members.

“We are grateful to Enovert Community Trust for its grant, as our other fundraising efforts were hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The grant has allowed the project to become a reality and ensured the club’s continuing presence in the community for decades to come. We have been impressed with the speed at which the Trust processed our application, which will ensure we are ready to open and serve the community as soon as the government’s Covid-19 restrictions allow.”

Museum’s Winter Workout Tewkesbury Museum has decided not to open to the public this winter as a COVID precaution. Instead we are pressing ahead with a programme of improvements to our displays: our Winter Workout!

Our priority this year is the revamp of the Battlefield display. The diorama (large model of the battle in progress) was created 50 years ago, to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Tewkesbury.

For the 550th in 2021 the diorama will be rehoused in a new exhibition examining the causes of the Wars of the Roses and following the journeys of the rival armies, Lancaster and York, to Tewkesbury where they met on 5 May 1471. We have employed Cameron Lawrence to design the set and lead construction, with help from members of the Battlefield Society.

As a consequence of changing the battle room, we are moving other exhibits too. Our pre – history and Roman section, is being expanded, and we are looking to re-introduce our children’s activity area as soon as restrictions allow.

2020 was to have been a major year for the museum. We completed the fabulous fairground model, with swinging yachts, galloping horses and barrel organ tunes; but like everywhere, were forced to close.

So let’s make 2021 the year to remember for all

the right reasons, here on Barton St and in the town and in the world at large.

THE GROWING POPULARITY FOR HORSE BOX CONVERSIONS Many old horseboxes are enjoying a new life, thanks to their popularity at outdoor events, and despite the inactivity during this last year, many entrepreneurial caterers are planning for a surge in outdoor activities.

Both easy to tow, and easy to convert, the horsebox bar or outdoor kitchen, also looks the part at all kinds of events.

Local business man and vehicle body shop owner, Robert Tart has just completed another conversion, for his daughter Emma who runs, Peggy Sue’s, a locally based mobile Bar and Cocktail home delivery service.

After the runaway

success of the concept, the business is available as a franchise, this latest conversion is to be delivered to Kent, to start a similar venture.

Emma adds “Peggy Sue’s is expanding and pre Covid we were enjoying attending lots of weddings and events, this past year we have started a cocktail delivery service, to bring a little joy to people’s front doors.”

Firstly, Mitton W.I hope you all had a good Christmas, despite the worries of 2020 and sincerely hope we all have a much better and happy new year.

It has been a very empty year with no meetings since March 2020. At least we did manage to learn a few Morris Dancing moves from the England’s Glory Ladies Group before the lock down. Whether it stood us in good stead or not for what was to come, who knows! Despite the lack of meetings one of our members kindly opened up her garden during the summer so we could have a coffee morning or two and a good natter, so many of us have been keeping in touch one way or another!

We are hoping we will be allowed to start meetings again some time next year, but these meetings may very well have to be held at a new venue (we will make sure all details available as soon as we can). Due to the restrictions placed upon schools due to this current pandemic we probably will not be able to meet at Mitton Manor School. We are looking at this as a very exciting new chapter in Mitton W.I’s history so why not keep in touch and, when we open up again, come and join us. We will definitely be having a varied and interesting year once we get going again.

Tewkesbury’s independent cycling and car parts specialists, Autospares, have signed up to a new scheme initiated by and international tyre manufacturer.

Cyclists can now drop off their old inner tubes at a recycling collection point within Autospares shop at 57 Barton Street.

Tyre manufacturers Schwalbe arrange for them to be collected, and delivered to their warehouse in the UK. From there they are shipped in full containers to the factory in Indonesia, where devulcanisation and full recycling procedures take place. The material is then used to produce new Schwalbe inner tubes which are themselves 100% recyclable.

Including all the transportation involved, energy usage is only 20% of that used for producing new butyl rubber. No wonder the idea has already received the Eurobike Green Award and last year’s green concept award.

This winter lockdown presented me with my biggest challenge!

My answer was to launch a set of four Winter Wellness Workshops - supplying and delivering creative Flower Workshops to people's homes.. literally!

25 students signed up and every two weeks I emailed them a link to a private step-by-step tuition video.

I then delivered individual Flower Packages (with everything needed for each design) to each person's doorstep.

As a follow-up for every workshop, each student received an invite to join a live Flower School Zoom session for feedback, hints & tips and a social gettogether.

Stimulating people's creativity with the aesthetic quality of flowers makes for a great combination - this is something I know from all my experience in teaching.

But what I learned

from this experience is that I could still connect with people via videos and online get-togethers. and that the anticipation of receiving a surprise flower package in itself provided a real boost during these difficult times.

I also learned that I would get sacked if I was a commercial delivery driver... standing on drives and chatting for ten minutes at each delivery stop is not a commercial way to work, but it did mean I had a big smile on my face at the end of the day!

I am now offering a set of three NEW Spring Wellness Workshops, starting on Friday 19th March.

Friends of the Mill Dear Tewkesbury Direct, In recent months Mill Bank, the iconic Tewkesbury view of the medieval cottages and Abbey Mill with the

Abbey in the background, has been desecrated by the installation of fourteen large, black booms and four oversized galvanised mooring poles.

So many people were concerned to find that these eyesores were to be permanent fixtures that the 'Friends of Mill Avon' group was formed in order to protect this area's historic importance.

Despite the severe restrictions of Covid, over 200 people requested to be included in a petition asking for action to be taken by both the Environment Agency (responsible for the booms) and Tewkesbury Town Council (the poles) The petition and a visual presentation were shown to TTC and forwarded to the EA. We wish to thank everyone who has shown support for the objections and are pleased to report that we are now being included in consultations with the EA to consider more aesthetic alternatives.

Neutering your pet This month local vet Brad Cooper from Folly Gardens Veterinary Clinics looks at the benefits of neutering your dog.

Why neuter your dog?

Neutering is important in preventing unwanted pregnancy, and roaming.

Neutering females can help to greatly reduce the risk of many cancers such as ovarian, uterine and mammary neoplasia, as well as preventing false pregnancies and serious life threatening uterine infections, known as pyometra.

Neutering males helps to prevent health problems associated with the prostate and testes and can be of benefit in certain behavioural situations.

When to neuter your dog Here at Folly Gardens we are aware that a ‘one size fits all’ policy doesn’t really work!

We see lots different breeds, and temperament of dogs and there are many things that need to be discussed when deciding on when to neuter your pet.

It may be suitable to spay (females) and castrate (males) from as early as six months of age, but some female dogs are best to have a season first and some males can benefit from being neutered slightly later in life.

We would always recommend a discussion with one of our veterinary team to give you the most appropriate advice for your pet to meet your individual circumstances.

The timing of neutering is more important in female than in male dogs and we normally recommend speying females 2-3 months after their season has finished.

Have you considered keyhole spey for your dog?

We are one of the only local veterinary clinics to offer your pet the option of keyhole surgery.

Laparoscopic (or keyhole) surgery has been the preferred option for many forms of human surgery for some years now. Our surgeons at Folly Gardens are very experienced in laparoscopic procedures.The technique of making two or three tiny incisions, using a camera and fine specialist

instruments to neuter, is much less invasive than a traditional ‘open’ spey. Patient pain is lessened and recovery is much, much quicker.

Dogs spayed by this keyhole technique can get back to normal exercise after a few days as opposed to a couple of weeks of exercise restriction with the traditional surgery.

I chose to neuter our

own dog Muddy laparoscopically because as a working cocker she always does everything at a million miles an hour - she was back to her usual bonkers self within a few days enjoying her walks (runs!) pain-free.

READERS WRITE Dear Tewkesbury Direct, Supporting dyslexic learners is one of my biggest passions. It began years ago when doing my teaching degree and discovered that my husband Kev

Dyslexia: Kate's story and the bigger picture (then boyfriend) was dyslexic. It made sense

on so many levels!

Throughout my sixteen years teaching in mainstream primary schools I saw numerous children who reminded me of young versions of my husband and I found the support for them and their parents to be far from what I thought it should be.

So, I retrained and qualified as a specialist dyslexia teacher/assessor. Currently I offer private tuition, dyslexia assessments, staff training and work part time in a local school (when Covid 19 allows), giving specialist teaching to pupils and supporting staff.

The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) explains that 10-15% of are the population dyslexic, so at least three students per class on average, but despite this 80% of people with dyslexia leave school without a diagnosis or receiving the support

they need to succeed.

The BDA have a current petition to help every child get the support they need through an increase in early identification, staff training including training of specialist teachers (such as myself) who can support staff/pupils in a school/cluster of schools and government funding for diagnostic assessments in schools.

This is more important than ever during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Go for green at Engall Castle Dear Tewkesbury Direct, The arrival of the first electric vehicle at Engall Castle at the end of last year was the start of a move to ‘go green’ with the next car arriving in April.

The decision to use efficient and clean vehicles in and around Tewkesbury and the villages is, we believe, the right move to make.

Over the past year it has become more and more apparent that clean air and quiet roads are one element of lock down that I think we have all enjoyed, and we hope that by electrifying our fleet we are making a small contribution to a cleaner environment in the future.

THE COURTS BEYOND RED LANE Red Lane turns abruptly away from the river to join the High Street just beyond the Tudor House. The road layout predates the High Street layout and the burgage plots and alleys have been fitted around it.

From Red Lane to the Black Bear there is, or was, a regular pattern of narrow plots behind the front houses which back directly on to the Mill Avon. Because of this they have never been used for through access and there is now a scattering of small courts, often giving access to cottages behind the front houses. If you count your steps from a court entrance, about seven will take you to another court, or where there was once a court. It’s not exact, but it’s close and gives some clues to the regular layout which has been eroded over the years.

The 1884 map of the area came after Avonside, now DF Legal’s offices, and the Riverside were built and the layout is very similar to today, from the street at least. The only major change is that one property, No 64, has been demolished in the building of Home Abbey House. Unfortunately for

our understanding of the earlier changes, there is no record of what Avonside and the Riverside replaced.

The first court in the sequence is behind the door to the Post Office (1). This building was the George Hotel for many years and the court, which led to the stables and latterly the skittle alley, was the George Passage.

After the Post Office is Hammerton Court (2), once occupied by George Hammerton, boat builder. In the past it has

been both Monnox and Palmer’s Alley. The front house is now Petit Fleur, a survival of a timber framed building. This was once two properties.

The right-hand half was for a while a ‘low class beer house’, the Teddington Arms.

Next is Lock Court (3), which has had even more names; Sparkes Alley (1769), Jeynes Alley (1836), Scott’s Alley (1871) and Lock Court by 1892. It got its name because the lock keeper once lived there and rowed across to op-

Once two shops, this is clearly one building, timber framed behind the brick rendered front and with a roof described by Historic England as ‘characteristic of late medieval town houses’.

60 High Street, now Studio 60, was a derelict timber-framed building recently rebuilt sympathetically in brick.

It is the front house to Mann’s Court (4), named for John Mann, a waterman who traded from the landing at the bottom of the plot. Until 1970 it contained two cottages, a range of storage sheds and a pigsty.

61 High Street, now the Panache restaurant, was a beer house, the Ship and Castle, until 1864, and a Café or restaurant for much of the twentieth century. It had a court, (5) entered from what is now the front door. Now blocked by the stairs, the remnants can be traced through the building though nothing remains beyond that.

From 62 to 65, there has been wholesale demolition and rebuilding over the past couple of centuries and the plot layout behind has completely disappeared. 62 is a discrete building retaining the seven paces

width with its court still visible as a passage and closed off with a door (6) Though part of the plot of 62 at some time it transferred to 61 and was once known as Ship and Castle Passage. It once gave access to at least three cottages.

63, Avonside, is two plot widths, with a central front door which once provided a passage through to a garden which extended into adjacent plots.

It was a rather grand gentleman’s residence when built; occupied by Charles Moore, solicitor, and his family for much of the nineteenth century, with two servants.

The next building, 64 was demolished to give access to construct Home Abbey House. For a long time this was the Borough Surveyor’s Office. It had an archway for a carriage, possibly for Avonside’s use.

Next is Trafalgar

House, which retains a court beyond its front door (7). There was once a pub, the Woolpack, on this site which was pulled down in about 1880 to build the present house.

The Riverside is another of those grand town houses, which probably replaced two earlier houses, leaving no clues to the earlier plots. Next door, though, was a lovely three storey timber-framed building which burned down early in in 1946, and was not rebuilt. The stub, the ground floor, became the Rugby Club before being incorporated into the Black Bear. It’s passage, starting from the door beside the Riverside (8), has long been closed and built over but the evidence of its existence is quite clear.

The range of buildings finishes with the Black Bear, which breaks the pattern. Access was

showing how closely together the classes used to live. It’s still possible to glimpse the uniformity of the original plots which extended to the

river, where there were landing stages for importing and exporting goods, the source of much of the wealth of the town.

Rare AA box, rescued for preservation After fifty-plus years, an old Automobile Association, roadside emergency call box, has been saved from demolition.

The box dating from the 1930s, originally sited on the A40 at Andoversford, was moved to a garden in Winchcombe where it has been used as a garden store ever since.

The owners of the property decided there was no further use for the structure and it was offered to the Restoration and Archive Trust based next to the steam railway at Toddington.

The box is one of a handful of survivors left, from a total of 950 that were sited on the roads around the country, used by motorists, to telephone for roadside assistance.

A spokesman for the trust said, “We are delighted to own such a rare and iconic structure, it is hoped to be a useful exhibit for classic car shows, retro events and add to the historical ambiance of its new home, we look forward to the day when visitors can come and see it”.

Tewkesbury Historical Society - 30 Years Young!

This year sees the 30th anniversary of Tewkesbury Historical Society. It was founded in 1991 by John Dixon, formerly head of history at Tewkesbury School, in response to a challenge by a past curator of Tewkesbury Museum to get GCSE students to do an ironwork survey of the town.

In the last thirty years, the Society has flourished, adding greatly to the public knowledge of our town’s past. We currently have nearly 150 members, have published 17 books and have hosted six public meetings every year.

Since lockdown, we have successfully hosted monthly speakers on ‘Zoom’.

Our main output is our annual ‘Bulletin’ publication.

Through this, we have created a record of the town’s interesting times, events, people and places, from the age of the Romans right up to the end of the

twentieth century.

It has enabled authors, some of them professional historians and academics but the majority being local people, from school students to retirees, writing for the first time, to get their work into print. Many have worked closely with Tewkesbury Museum, have discovered fresh material at Gloucester Records Office, or have used national or personal records now available on-line.

Furthermore, the internet has reconnected us with the descendants of Tewkesbury people of the past - gaining us authors

were patients at Mitton Manor War Hospital in 1917 and an appraisal of the life and work of Nicholas Ridley, Tewkesbury’s controversial MP during the age of Margaret Thatcher.

Unfortunately, there are many instances where this is not the case.

If a cat is taken from its mother too early, they may not have the full skills.

Illness, old age or injury causing stiffness or arthritis can reduce their grooming ability.

Long haired cats and those with double coats may just be out of their depth with the amount of hair and fluff, causing excessive hair balls, knots and matts.

Indoor cats may not have the facilities to keep their nails trimmed.

This is when help is needed. As the owner, short haired cats would benefit from a brush

once a week and longhaired cats more often.

The Cross House Dental Practice team headed up by Dr Keerthi Kumar will soon be moving into a new and improved surgery in Tewkesbury town centre.

Dr Kumar, known locally as Dr KK, has purchased commercial premises just a stone’s throw away at 7 Barton Street, and has completely refurbished the building to provide more space and enhanced facilities for his patients and team of professionals.

“We have outgrown our original base at Cross House, and although it’s a building with plenty of character and charm, the stairs can be a challenge for some of our older patients”, explains Dr KK “When we spotted the opportunity in Barton Street to have more

“We have invested in refurbishing the building which is on three floors and it now offers a light and airy surgery with modern equipment and facilities. There’s plenty of room for us to grow too and to add a third treatment room and office space. What is particularly useful is to have nearby on street parking for our patients”.

The surgery offers say day emergency treatment for adults, and NHS appointments for children.
