THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TEWKESBURY TOWN The floods of 2007 left much of Canterbury Leys devastated - and major damage was done to the headquarters of the 1st Tewkesbury’s Boys Brigade. But now, thanks to a major fund-raising effort, the refurbished building has been re-opened and the nomadic boys have a permanent home again. There was a good turnout for the ribbon cutting ceremony, which was performed by Harry Workman and Anne Cadbury. When it was constructed in the early 60s, Harry Workman officially opened the building, with Mrs Cadbury’s husband Martin. In excess of 150 people turned out to view the refurbished hall, which was purchased last year from the Borough Council. The majority of the £50,000 needed to complete the project was raised by hard work and local community support. A variety of events

asked us to thank Clive Woolford Motors and Cotteswold Dairy for their sponsorship, and John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society, for hosting the evening. More Pictures on Page 6.

The 'Sights on 60' campaign aims to increase the borough's recycling rate to 60 per cent in 2012/13 and, as part of the campaign, foil has now been added to the list of materials that can be recycled. The borough's current recycling rate is 56 per cent and since Tewkesbury Borough Council launched its new scheme in April 2010, more than 17,000 tonnes of materials have been collected and recycled into something else. The list of materials that residents can recycle is already the largest in Gloucestershire - but the introduction of foil will be a welcome addition for households. Tewkesbury Borough Council's Lead Member for Clean and Green Environment Cllr Jim Mason said: “I am pleased to announce that residents can now recycle foil in their blue recycling bins. “Since we launched our scheme in 2010 we have listened to what materials our residents

want to recycle. Foil has been a very popular request so it's fantastic that arrangements have now been put in place to allow this.” “It will make a huge difference to the environment as it would mean a significant reduction in the amount of waste going off to landfill.” As part of the new campaign, the council plans to improve education on recycling to help residents fully understand the benefits to diverting waste away from landfill. In addition to diverting waste away from landfill, a further incentive is that the council receives a payment from the Government for every tonne of material that is recycled. This means, the more Tewkesbury Borough recycles, the more money the council can put towards protecting and improving the service. IT’S FUN TO BE AT THE YMCA! The large black door between Wetherspoons and The Cross belongs to Tewkesbury YMCA and hides an amazing secret, writes Ian Boskett. Stepping through the door is like entering Doctor Who’s TARDIS - because inside you’ll find the building is far, far bigger than it appears to be from the outside. Tewkesbury and District YMCA has been at the heart of the community for over 100 years. Today, it offers a variety of amenities and activities in a delightfully refurbished building, which provides a perfect meeting place for all. For refreshment there is a large bar which serves coffee and soft drinks as well as a range of ale, cider and wine. Sports facilities are excellent: two skittle alleys, a quiet snooker room (with two full sized tables), pool table and darts. There’s also a large screen TV which shows the all-important sporting occasions. There are various clubs within the organisation which are open to new members. Every Tuesday a very active railway society meets, with shows and various presentations from 7.30pm. In April these include Mike Tyack’s ‘Somewhere Around The World’ on Tuesday 3rd and John Dew’s ‘More from the Midlands and South West Memories’ on Tuesday 17th. Members club nights run on other Tuesdays during the month. Also on a Tuesday, the ‘YMCA Stompers’ strutt their stuff in the first floor Line dancing room. On Wednesdays the camera and video club meet in the upstairs front room, holding a variety of various photographic presentations. At the rear of the Church Street building is a large hall available for parties and functions, as well as the main hall which is used to host

Two Tewkesbury-based volunteer organisations took part in a scheme to test Gloucestershire’s flood defences last month. The Severn Area Rescue Association and Maritime Volunteers joined the MoD Police, Gloucestershire Police, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Fire and Rescue Service, Great Western Ambulance Service and Gloucestershire

Cave Rescue Group in a three days exercise around Lydney. The exercise was aimed at making sure all the agencies worked together effectively to help the people of towns located near major rivers should major flooding occur. A major flood defence scheme to protect communities on the lower River Severn was completed last year.

GARDENING with Ernest Bratt

DIVIDED OPINION

Some years back a furore broke out in horticultural circles concerning the right way to prune Roses, writes Ernest Bratt. A trial had been undertaken to compare different methods of rose pruning which involved pruning one group with, wait for it, hedge trimmers! The startling result was that roses pruned by this method actually produced more flowers that year. Often there is divided opinion with horticultural ranks but hopefully this story might reassure you that it is actually very hard to inflict damage by pruning. Our Pershore College tutor advocated the '4D' rule for rose and shrub pruning: first prune the Dead, Damaged, Diseased, Disobedient (ie crossing) stems. Then, for roses, reduce the stems by one third to a halve cutting on the angle to an outward facing bud aiming to create an open centre. Then weed around the roses, feed, water and mulch. So, there you are, you have a choice hedge trimmers or a stout pair of gloves, sharp secateurs and oh by the way a tetanus injection within date! Opinion is also divid-

8 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

ed on when to divide congested clumps of snowdrops. Traditionally this has been in 'the green' but more recently opinion is moving onwards summer division when the foliage has died back. At the renowned Colesbourne Estate the latter method is preferred although I wonder if the 'green method' might be slightly simpler for most of us. Either way do not let the bulbs dry out. One bit of division on which we all still agree is dividing perennials which have developed a woody centre eg Sedums. For these dig up the clump, take two forks back to back and literally

prise apart the climb into several pieces and then replant. Feed, water and mulch and thats it. Lastly, do visit our website www.galanthusgardendesign.co.uk or ring 01452 536429 where we have added free fact sheets on garden design following our successful 'Appreciating Garden Design' workshop. If you missed it then we plan a re-run so watch this space. And if there are any particular gardening or design questions you have email us info@galanthusgardendesign.co.uk and we'll do our best answer them in our monthly gardening column. Ernest Bratt

Local Business Continues to Bloom Twenty one years ago, Mark and Liz decided to start selling the bedding plants they had grown themselves at Gotherington Nurseries. Many customers still recall the old wooden building they used as a shop and the single glasshouse where bedding plants were grown and displayed. Since that time the couple have developed and expanded the business. Despite selling a wide range of plants and gardening products, they are proud to still be a working nursery, growing a wide variety of seasonal bedding plants, cottage garden plants and vegetable plants. Mark and Liz purchased Toddington Garden Centre four years ago, so Gotherington Nurseries has expanded its production to enable it to supply them with bedding plants too ensuring the quality and freshness of all the plants they sell. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the hard work of the local staff members who work at the nurseries each day. Liz says: “ we have a great team working for us, which has contributed significantly to our success. They get involved in all aspects of the business from production, making up hanging baskets and containers to producing signage and helping customers.” Esmond Lane has worked at Gotherington Nurseries since 2003. He says “after nine years I still enjoy working at the nurseries. There is such a variety of work, I never get bored. Mark and Liz both work hard and it’s a joy to work with them and the rest of the staff who are friendly and helpful. Gotherington Nurseries is a family-run business. GEARING UP FOR EUROPE’S BIGGEST MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL Preparations are well under way for the 28th Tewkesbury Medieval Festival - the largest of its kind in Europe - which will be held on the edge of town during July, writes Peggy Clatworthy. It is centred around a reenactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury of 1471, featuring around 2000 Warriors in fighting on part of the site of the original battle. The official opening by the festival's patron, actor and historian Robert Hardy will be a 12 noon on Saturday 14th July. Walking around you will see, hear and smell many things that would have been familiar to people living in those tumultuous times, when two the two great dynasties of York and Lancaster battled for the crown. You can watch and listen as they clash in a desperate fight between knights in armour, foot soldiers, archers, with their much feared long bows, and the latest weapon of mass destruction, the canon. Away from the battle field the festival aims to re-create the atmosphere of a fair that may have been held in the town at this time, with stalls of all kinds, food and drink sellers, story tellers, minstrels and much, much more.

With over 100 stalls and a whole host of entertainers, there really is something for everyone; The Bright Knight tent provides medieval based arts and crafts and hands on displays for children, the large and colourful medieval market offers some unique shopping opportunities and a chance to watch medieval style craftsmen and women at work. The huge beer tent offers a range of real ales, including some specially brewed local brewers for the event, and our caterers can provide everything from a full roast dinner to an ice cream, with plenty of vegetarian

options. Many re-enactors and traders, who travel from across the globe to take part, live in complete medieval style for the whole weekend, and you are welcome to visit them in their living history camps around the site – including the sumptuous camp of King Edward IV and his court They are extremely enthusiastic and well informed about what they do, and love talking about it to others. The festival takes place on fields off the A38 Tewkesbury – Gloucester Road and is well signposted from junction 9 of the M5.

BACK AMONG THE BLUEBELLS There is hardly a more stunning sight in the British Countryside than a woodland carpeted with Spring flowers. This month and into May, wild bluebells will be at their best. This time, take the path on your left and walk along the edge of a field, keeping the hedge to your left. Go through and up the slope, keeping the fence to your left, eventually reaching a row of trees. These are the well-kept grounds of Conderton Manor, which are occasionally open to the public under the National Gardens scheme. Keep straight

Cross over the next stile, near a high stone wall, and walk straight ahead to reach the lane, turn left and walk back to Conderton. The majority of the attractive stone cottages and houses in Conderton are part of the Overbury Estate, which also manages the farmland here. CROSS TALK with Victoria Gardener

ITS HOLIDAY PLAYTIME ON THE PARK The popular holiday play scheme, POPS, for children aged between four and eleven years old is set to return this Easter, writes Victoria Gardener. Youngsters are being offered two weeks packed full of Easter activities while their parents can relax in the knowledge that their little ones are having a fun time in a secure environment at the Jubilee II Building (next to Queen Margaret School). The scheme runs from Monday 2nd April to Thursday 5th April and then from Tuesday 10th to Friday 13th April and is open from 8.30am to 5.30 pm. Half days can also be booked. The cost of care is being subsidised by Priors Park Neighbourhood Project charity and is £12 per day or £6 for a half day per child. The holiday play

scheme is being run by Donna Kilpatrick who is a fully trained play leader with nine years of child care experience. To book a place please ring Donna during weekdays after 3 pm on 01684 298979 or visit www.priorsparkneighbourhoodproject.co.uk for further information. The holiday playscheme is open to all children (not just those attending the Queen Margaret School) and is ideal for working parents or carers attending training courses. Children will be able to enjoy a range of indoor and outdoor activities, socialise and make new friends The

based luncheon club which meets every last Thursday in the month will be meeting again on Thursday 26th April. A delicious two course meal is served at 12 noon at the Jubilee II Centre in Priors Park at just £4 per head. Everyone is welcome – make new friends and try your luck with the raffle. To reserve your place please contact Claire Mills at Priors Park Neighbourhood Project by 23 April on 01684 290069. Victoria Gardener

The first of three replacement noticeboards for community information within Wheatpieces Parish has been installed at the shops opposite the community centre. The new wooden boards are a significant improvement aesthetically and are of a robust design which should last many years to come. After considering a number of designs, the council was pleased to engage the services of local company the Handyman Centre in the manufacture of the boards. The aim is for all boards to be replaced by the end of the year which will improve opportunities for dissemination of community information throughout the parish.

IF YOU DON’T USE IT, YOU LOSE IT!

We have been told many times through various media avenues that we must keep fit and healthy, But how much and what should we do? It is important for various reasons including our perception of fitness and ourselves that health and fitness is not just being able to run a certain distance, lift a large weight or lose so many pounds. Health and fitness has many areas to it, and this includes our physical, emotional and mental states. This means that we should be looking towards trying to increase all areas of our health & fitness everyday. I, for one am not a big advocate of NO PAIN, NO GAIN, as this I believe can have negative perceptions for many people regarding trying to GET FIT. This is an old age way of thinking, whereas we should be trying to improve our fitness and health a little each day. Whether we are a musician, sportsman or woman, in business, studying, playing computer games or generally

Lee Booth doing household chores, among other areas of our lives, if we don’t practice or continue trying to keep things moving forward and improving, begin to LOSE the skills and fitness built up. Therefore, if you DON’T USE IT, YOU LOSE IT. So, if we continue to improve something a little everyday, then we will continue to move forward and be fitter and healthier in all areas of our life. The recent Horizon show on the BBC elevated this point by exploring the fact that with only 3 minutes worth of High Intensity Training (HIT)

per week we can increase our aerobic capacity and insulin sensitivity by up to 25% in one month. This means that with only twelve minutes of HIT training we can vastly improve our health. Leading to the realisation that longer is not necessarily better in aerobic training, and that everyone can start to achieve a healthier future in a short time. Whilst the evidence in the programme was quite compelling, it should also be noted that it is important to have the clearance from your doctor before you take part in any High Intensity Training programs as any slight defects in the heart may cause complications to exercise of this manner, if you haven’t been exercising for a while. So there is No Excuse to say you haven’t got time NOW. Till next time, take care and stay healthy. Lee Booth

SILURIAN CHOIR’S TEN YEAR CELEBRATIONS CONTINUE

Silurian Choir: Come and Sing! Tewkesbury based Silurian Choir is continuing its tenth anniversary celebrations with a full orchestral performance of Handel’s Messiah in Pershore Abbey on Saturday 28th April. This follows a very successful “Come and Sing” of Messiah in Tewkesbury Methodist Church on March 3rd, when the choir benefited from a near doubling of its numbers in the afternoon rehearsal. The choir is fortunate that it could draw on its own members for almost all solo work, each showing versatility and sensitivity of performance in the variety of musical styles appropriate to Handel’s great arias and recitatives. The choir was grateful, too, for the support of Kenneth Roles and Edward Chetcuti singing Bass and Richard Knight for his marathon accompaniment on the organ in both rehearsal and performance, his playing of

the Pastoral Symphony was particularly memorable. Conductor John Wilderspin’s enthusiastic leadership throughout drew the best in all the singers, and the ensuing evening performance was warmly received by an audience which when combined with the ensemble of soloists and choral singers filled the church. The Silurian choir now looks forward to what is becoming its traditional major orchestral event in Pershore Abbey in April, this year a performance of Messiah with guest soloists including wellknown local soprano Sue Black. These concerts have always been well supported so you are advised

to get your tickets soon! They are available from Blue in Broad Street, Pershore, or from choir members. Further details are available from from Ron McLone on 01684 273068. The celebrations continue on Saturday 7th July in St Mary Magdalene, Twyning when the choir will perform Faure’s Requiem – ten years after performing it at their first concert. The second half will include many popular items suitable for a Royal Diamond Jubilee! So the choir continues to celebrate ten glorious years of music making – make sure you are part of it by coming to the concerts on Saturdays 28th April and 7th July, both commencing at 7.30pm.

FASHION AND THE FRIENDS Pretty Special, Kalliste and Kudos displayed Fashion for every occasion to an appreciative audience at Tewkesbury’s Watson Hall last month. Outfits and accessories for every occasion from picnics in the park to a Grand Ball were modelled by volunteers, who graced the cat walk showing off the new seasons styles and colours. This event was to fund raise for the Friends of Tewkesbury Museum who would like to provide new ‘walk round’ display cases. The winners of Tewkesbury Schools Cat Walk show strutted their stuff as a finale to the Fashion Show. Jazz in the afternoon was played by the Rod Kelly Trio. The winner of the ‘fashion from the past’ competition was Angela Devereux, chosen by Mrs Anne Cadbury. The displays of vintage fashion from Tewkesbury Museum and Replay were much admired too Some ladies enjoyed the opportunity to have delicate henna designs painted on their hands and after a little retail therapy at the jewellery, card and accessory stalls, completed their after-

WHEN THINGS DON’T WORK OUT Relationship breakdown can be one of the hardest times we encounter in our lives. Not only for adults, but also the children. Having the right professional advice and support can make all the difference. First, choose the right lawyer - a resolution accredited family specialist. Secondly, consider which methods of dispute resolution are available: DIY:  reaching agreement between yourselves. Mediation:  a process to help couples talk things through. Collaborative  law:  a no court alternative, minimising conflict to achieve solutions to family disputes enabling couples and their families to plan their future with dignity and respect. Traditional:  negotiation/litigation where your lawyer focuses on what he or she expects would be the outcome of an eventual court process. Take time to think through your options and do so with professional advice with a resolution accredited specialist who has been trained in all of the options available. At Quality Solicitors

Thomson and Bancks both of our relationship lawyers are resolution accredited specialists and

THE START OF SPRING

EQUESTRIAN WHAT’S ON

With more than a quarter of the year already gone, we are now heading full speed into the better weather and into the manic season at wildlife centres throughout the country, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. From now until September we will be inundated with baby mammals and birds with thousands of mouths to feed from dawn till dusk. Out in the gardens and the countryside plants and trees are bursting into life and the wildlife is beginning to think about the imminent breeding season. Now is the time when everyone needs to be more vigilant, looking out for nesting birds and all sorts of young mammals emerging from nests, burrows, earths and warrens etc. We have been watching numerous birds on the land around the hospital busily building their nests and we are expecting the first abandoned or orphaned chicks to arrive at Vale any day. We do not include pigeons and doves in this as they can breed all year round and several feral pigeon and collared dove chicks have been reared here over the winter months. The first of the spring chicks to arrive are usually the blackbirds and

thrushes, soon followed by finches, robins and then birds of prey such as tawny owls. Ducklings and gulls by the dozen will arrive a bit later.

We already have our first fox cub of the year as well as a baby squirrel and also some leverets and young rabbits. Many more will soon arrive and in a few weeks baby hedgehogs will start to be found – a good reason to be extra careful when working in the garden. Bonfires, compost heaps and under sheds are favoured hedgehog nesting sites. Please look out for wildlife in trouble but don’t assume that,

because a very young bird appears to be all alone on the ground, it has been abandoned as this is rarely the case. When most birds fledge from the nest they are unable to fly properly but will spend the first few days on the ground, exercising their wings to build up muscle strength but they will still be watched over and fed by the parent bird/s. If this is the case they should be left alone and should not be picked up. If you are unsure about what to do, please ring us for advice before intervening. 01386 882288. For more help and advice, visit our website at www.valewildlife.org.uk Our popular Car Boot Sales will begin the new season on Saturday 7th April from 9.30am (weather permitting).

TRAILER TRASH? Local  trailer  designer and  manufacturer  Barry McCooey  took  time  out to tell us about Stokbord -  a  new  material  made from recycled farm plastics. Waste items such as polypropylene rope and wrappings are used to make Stokbord - which is a sheet material and an alternative to plywood. Barry, whose company Swift Trailers uses Stokbord in its new livestock trailers, says the product is virtually indestructible. It is designed to withstand kicks from animals and outperforms traditional ply. “I strive to give customers the best materials and worksmanship in our custom-built trailers, so they perform in the most rigorous conditions,” said Barry. Versatile Stokbord is both sustainable and durable, plus it is suitable for use in engineering and the sports and leisure field too. If you want to know more about Stokbord log on to www.swift-trailers.co.uk, www.stokbord.co.uk or www.solwayrecycling.co.uk

STARS LINE UP FOR LOCAL LAKEFEST Some of the best-known names from the last twenty year of British pop and rock will be heading for Croft Farm next month (18th-19th May) to play at the Lakefest music festival. The event will also showcase talented local artists - and we will be profiling the likes of KickBack and Avert Francis next month. Leading the field will be The  Levellers, with their entertaining blend of alternative folk and punk. With six UK gold albums under their belt and memorable single hits such as What a Beautiful Day behind them, The Levellers are touring again and look set to light up Lakefest. Several Lakefest artists have had international success too. EMF, who originated from Gloucestershire, are best known for their single Unbelievable, which topped the US Billboard charts and made number three in the UK. Chesney Hawkes, son of 1960s Tremeloe Len Hawkes, was Top of the Pops in 1991 with I am the One and Only, also a top ten hit in the USA. Planning to stay out for the summer? Then the sounds of trio Dodgy will have a familiar ring - as will their hit Good Enough. Reef  will be performing Put Your Hands Up among others, and award winning Irish band The Roving Crows are sure to

get even those with two left feet up and dancing. If you want to keep bopping the night away, then Toploader will have you Dancing in the Moonlight. Familiar numbers from their two UK top five albums should make their set too.

BABY FILM SHOWS MAKE A SPLASH IN TEWKESBURY The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury has teamed up with Aquatots Swimming so that between them, they can offer parents and small babies a range of engaging activities  that  both  entertain  parents  and  develop  the  skills  of  their  children,  writes Shelby Powell. Coinciding with the launch of The Roses’ brand new season of Nappy Monday films, screenings exclusively for mums, dads or carers of children under 18 months, and the launch of the Summer term of swimming at Aquatots, the two businesses have clubbed together to offer their audiences and swimmers two competitions with exciting prizes. As a special treat, those attending the first Nappy Monday film of

the season, The Artist, winner of five Academy Awards, on Monday 16 April will be entered into a prize draw to win a course of baby swimming lessons. The baby swimming lessons are worth over £100 and are being offered by Fiona MuntWhittle, Managing Director of Aquatots Swimming Ltd based in Tewkesbury. In addition, as a special treat for Aquatots Swimmers, Aquatots will

hold a competition with their swimmers, so that the lucky winner will win a free season ticket to The Roses’ Nappy Monday films. The season ticket is worth £36 and will give an Aquatots swimming parent the chance to go the cinema with their baby, without having to worry every time their child stirs. If you would like the chance to win a course of baby swimming lessons, a raffle will be held on Monday 16th April during the screening of The Artist at The Roses Theatre. There will be one lucky winner.

ANYONE FOR BRIDGE? A railway bridge which once carried the Tewkesbury-Malvern line over the M50 is currently being removed. The metal span, which was built in the early 1960s, never saw much use as the line closed shortly after it was installed. As part of the M50 motorway improvement works, the bridge is being dismantled and has been made available to any Railway Preservation Society in the UK. The Highways Agency is also reconstructing viaducts which carry the M50 over Bushley and Ripple brooks, resulting in some overnight and weekend closures. Work on the eastbound carriageway began in February and is expected to last until the end of 2012.

POSITIVE THINKING  with David Slater “It’s All In A  State Of Mind” This month, local therapist David Slater has sent us a poem to reflect upon: If you think you are beaten, you are, If you think you dare not, you don’t, If you like to win, but you think you can’t, It’s almost a “cinch” you won’t. If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost, For out in the world you find, Success begins with a fellow’s will; It’s all in the state of mind. Full many a race is lost Ere ever a step is run; And many a coward fails, Ere ever his work’s begun. Think big and your deeds will grow, Think small and you’ll fall behind, Think that you can and you will; It’s all in the state of mind. If you think you’re out classed, you are, You’ve got to think high to rise, You’ve got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life’s battles don’t always go To the stronger or faster man, But sooner or later, the man who wins, Is the fellow who thinks he can. -Walter D. Wintle

NEW SERVICES INTRODUCED BY M5NINE Since  March  2011  the local  charity  M5NINE has operated a Thursday ‘Drop-In’ at Tewkesbury Scout  Hut  in  Oldbury Road. The popular sessions run between 10am and 2.00pm, when anyone can pop in to have a hot drink and a biscuit or soup and a roll. Last month M5NINE started a Sit and Knit Club, where people get together to help knit items such as hats, scarves and gloves. These are passed on to the needy in Gloucestershire and indeed anywhere they might be appreciated. M5NINE, which is part of Tewkesbury Christian Centre, has also introduced a Food Parcel Service, so anyone in need can have some food to tide them over for a day. The charity’s other services include assistance with shopping and transport to hospital. Organised by Jim Poppy, M5NINE is a registered charity that is wholly dependent on donations. All its services are offered free of charge. If you would like to help, pop in and see Jim at a Drop-In session.

MAINLY FOR MUMS  by Fiona Munt-Whittle

A BIT OF PEACE AND QUIET WITH A TREASURE CHEST

Having  a  ‘treasure  chest’  filled  with  safe  real-world  objects  for  your  baby/toddler  to  play  with  can  give  you twenty minutes of calm in an otherwise fraught day, writes Fiona Munt-Whittle. It will also stimulate your child and enhance their development. The concept of having a ‘treasure basket’ is a simple yet profound idea pioneered by Elinor Goldschmiel throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. It should contain ‘realworld’ items creating a link with the outside world, not plastic imitations which quickly lose their appeal. Tailor it to the age of your child and only bring it out occasionally to keep its appearance special. Suggested items for your ‘treasure chest’ – use an old shoebox. Everyday objects from

around the house are best. Avoid plastic items and toys – this is about exploring the real world! Think about scent and sound as well as texture and function. Check for sharp edges just to be on the safe side, and make sure all items are clean and that they can’t choke on them, then let your imagination roam. Some of my children’s favourites included: • A tea strainer on a long metal chain • Jars of anything that shake (check lids are secure) • A loo roll or kitchen roll holder that you can

post things through • Small jewellery box, with a lid which opens and closes. • Tea lights and other candles • Ball of wool • Small packet of seeds • Pinecones • Lemons – particularly when bitten taste fantastic • Necklaces (wooden beads or ceramics) - but ensure they are not going to come undone. • Wooden spoons • Small saucepan • Bits of material such as velvet, satin (nice textures) • Brushes – toothbrush etc.

With slightly older toddlers, instead of having a ‘chest’ you could use an old handbag with a leather purse, business cards, old credit cards, folding hairbrush, hair scrunchie. Dad’s jacket could also be a source of exploration laid out on the floor with items to discover in all the pockets. Let your child play uninterrupted, but be on hand close by. Letting your child have the dignity of working and playing with real objects. It’s not just about the twenty minutes of peace and quiet – honest! Fiona Munt Whittle

ALL ABOARD THE SPECIAL EASTER EGGSPRESS! The  award-winning  Gloucestershire  Warwickshire Railway is ready to roll for the new season, and looks poised  to  attract  increasing  numbers  of  passengers despite setbacks in the past couple of years.

TREE SURGERY

RIDGES

After being largely ignored for fifty years, the Mythe embankment and viaduct are once again the focus of attention. This is because of the proposal by Severn Trent to remove it as part of flood control measures. This has certainly proved controversial! What is less controversial is that, at times of flood, the railway was almost the only dry route in and out of the Town. The top photograph above was taken in 1959 by T. Radway but, a year later, floods visited as did Dr. Barbara Moore whilst walking from John o’Groats to Lands End – she walked into town by the this viaduct surrounded by press and populace. (Has anyone any photos of that event?) It was also mooted as a northern bypass to avoid the problem of the Bredon Road corner. However, that opportunity was lost when the crucial part was sold to the Marina. Jack Boskett’s photo shows that little has really changed except that trees have matured. If the embankment and viaduct is removed, it will be like losing an old friend - whom we took for granted!

Two major landslips on the railway line between Toddington and the terminus at Cheltenham Race Course have made travel along its full length impossible. But the volunteer-run railway rose to the challenge, introducing two distinct services. 1960s rail cars have been running northwards from Toddington on a new length of line to Laverton, over the famous Stanway viaduct. Steam services have been operating between the station at Winchcombe and Cheltenham Race Course, skirting the lower slopes of the Cotswolds. Innovative timetables and a range of special events led to the GWR scooping the ‘Heritage

Railway of the Year’ award for 2011. Visitor numbers look set to rise this season too. During April free travel is being offered to all children accompanied by a fare paying adult. The Easter Eggspress (which runs between Cheltenham Race Course and Winchcombe) on Monday 9th April promises fun and surprises on the train for young and old. In May Thomas the Tank Engine will be visiting too. For full details of services visit the website www.gwsr.com

Two brothers from the White Tiger Tae-Kwon-Do and Martial  Arts  club  in  Tewkesbury  entered  their  first Competition of the year, and came away with second and third place. Bradley and Jake Boden (pictured), entered the National Independent T a e - K w o n - D o Association Open held in Cheltenham last month. Bradley took silver and Jake took bronze in the boy’s Yellow belt patterns.

Tewkesbury Rugby Club bring their league season to a close this month, with a home fixture against Bristol Saracens on Saturday 14th April. The club will be hoping to consolidate their mid-table position in the Glos Premier League. On Easter Saturday they travel the short distance to Evesham for a friendly match, and the club also hopes to arrange further friendlies before the end of April. Tewkesbury RFC’s annual presentation and dinner will take place on Saturday 28th April: presentations for Tewkesbury Tigers sides will be held next month.

The boy’s Instructor, Paul Wanklyn, a Fourth Degree Black belt, said “Considering the boys have only been training a few months, they have shown great commitment and dedication in their preparation and deserved to come away with a trophy.” “To have both of them stood on the podium made me feel very proud. It was a fantastic achievement, not only for them, but also for the club. I’m sure you will be seeing a lot more of Bradley and Jake in the future.” Training is held from 7pm on Mondays at the Wheatpieces Community Centre. There are also sessions at the Queen Margaret School in Priors Park on Wednesdays from 7pm. For details call 07722 584919 or visit w w w. w h i t e - t i g e r tkd.com
