PHARMACY MATTERS with Peter Badham

Weight management service

The Lie by Helen Dunmore £7.99 PB This is more than a story of the First Wold War, and is recounted in the months after the Armistice when Daniel returns home to his Cornish routes. His mother died while he was away, so he is homeless. An elderly lady, Mary Pascoe, allows him to camp on her property, and in thanks he cultivates her land, then as she sickens, he cares for her. The lie is perpetuated when Mary dies, and he follows her wish and privately buries her in her garden; answering any village enquiries by stating she is bed-bound; which lie suffices until eventually the doctor calls. The lie is the skeleton of the novel on which the flesh of the story hangs. The reader learns about Daniel's childhood, and his friendship with Frederick, the son of the big house where his mother worked. They are best friends, blood brothers, playing together along with Felicia his sister, who now, a young war widow, lives in the house along with her daughter. Daniel and Felicia mourn the loss of Frederick, who as gentry was an officer and Daniel's platoon commander, and whose death he witnessed, even risking his own life to rescue his friend. The flashbacks to the trenches are movingly and realistically recounted, yet this is not another first world war novel. It is about friendship, comradeship, and loss. How two young friends, Daniel and Felicia share their sorrow, and yet Daniel's honest fulfillment of an old lady's wish, unravels his life as the lie in exposed. Selected by: Ian B. We all want to enjoy the hot weather and look our best in summer clothes. Clients who enrol in the service during May and June will have their names put in a hat, and the winner will be given a £50 voucher. We really want to get behind this service as excessive weight is the common evil, affecting

our health across a raft of other conditions,

Peter Badham like diabetes, blood pressure and cancer. Our trained advisors work with clients to set clear/realistic goals. Normally a loss of 0.5 to 1kg per week is excel-

lent. Weight control is a life style change, with clear action plans. An increase in exercise, walking, swimming etc and a better control of diet. Some of our clients have lost over a stone, which is a phenomenal achievement At one of our branches recently i did an audit with a client , to find our how she found the service, and she told me that she was going to have a gastric band fitted, but decided to try our programme first. She was on target, what a great result!!! Peter Badham
