NEW CAR PARK SET TO HELP SUMMER TOURISM
A brand new parking facility which has opened on the former Healing’s Mill site, looks set to help boost tourism in the summer months. The new car park, which is privately operated by midlands-based Gallan Parking, offers a longterm parking solution for Tewkesbury at just £2.50 per day. Access is by means of the bridge at the end of Quay Street. The provision of additional spaces giving visi-

tors and tourists the option of staying longer in the town centre has been welcomed by local traders. Nicki Halford, of Halfords’ Traditional Butchers in the High Street, said “I use the car park myself - it’s secure, central and good value
for money. I think it might well help the number of visitors stopping off in the town.” Mario Prokopiou, proprietor of Quay Street’s Kingfisher Fish & Chip Restaurant also reacted positively: “The extra parking is great although a one hour
option may be a good idea,” he said. Robbie Jackson of The Anchor Inn added: “It’s definitely good news for Tewkesbury. Let’s hope visitors will come and enjoy our great town and riverside.” Preserving the heritage of the former mill see article on page 16.

Local entertainers will mark the centenary of WW1 on Sunday June 29th during the Armed Forces weekend and recapture the spirit and camaraderie of the war years with a show at the Roses Theatre. 'We Salute You' features music and song from the Innsworth Military Wives Choir. A medley of popular WW1 tunes will be supplied by the Manor Players, while Tewkesbury Chamber Choir will fast forward the audience to WW2 re-creating the music and laughter which kept Britain smiling through her darkest days. The highlight of the evening is a grand finale
lead by keyboard player Paul Keyes, when audience participation is encouraged with flag waving in the isles!

Tickets are now available from The Roses Theatre Box Office (01684) 295074 priced at £15. Profits from the show and from the sale of flags will be donated to the Poppy Appeal. Open Farm Sunday Overbury Farms will once again be opening its doors to the public as part of the national ‘Open Farm Sunday’ scheme. Overbury Farms is part of the Overbury Estate, which covers over 1,500 hectares on Bredon Hill and southwards to the A46. This year on Sunday 8th June 2014 there will be an opportunity to learn how modern farms work, and get an insight into how Britain’s farmers fulfil their responsibilities to the next generation by looking after the land and the environment. Although Overbury Farms has, in the past, offered extensive tours of its land, this year’s event may be smaller and require pre-booking. IT PAYS TO RECYCLE In support of the recent Easter Big Weekend and to highlight the importance of recycling, Cartridge World held a competition to guess the number of cartridges they recycled in March. They placed a container of empties in their window which was representative of the amount and asked people to guess how many there were. The prize was a whopping 1kg easter egg! Steve Cooper, the
manager, said “Thanks to all who took part. It was a great competition, well supported and especially good when parents came in with children to whom we could demonstrate the importance of recycling!”. The total number recycled was 691 cartridges. Congratulations to the competition winner, Mr B Trenfield of Northway in Tewkesbury, whose guess of 732 was the closest. Steve added “It’s
worth considering this figure multiplied by 12 gives you in excess of 8000 cartridges saved from going into our landfill in a year!”.

The photograph (left), looking towards the Mill, emphasises that were are two bridges offering possibly a one way system but it is important to emphasise that both need to be preserved for historical reasons. The bridge on the right was a road bridge, well restored by the Town Council in 2001. It is hard to imagine that, before the Mythe Bridge was opened in 1823, this was the main route for coaches to and from Hereford. They crossed the Severn at Upper Lode by a ferry and then crossed the Ham, driving through the Docks. This was followed by powering up Quay Street or stopping for refreshment at the Coach and Horses inn (recently ‘Champagne Charlies”) or at the Anchor. The other bridge was built for the railway, which was extended in 1844 from the High Street Station (see the Plaque at 103 High Street). The law, however, forbade steam power beyond the High Street so gravity was used for the descent with horses and later a diesel shunter to bring back the laden trucks. In 1959 little had changed: Quay Street was subsequently tar-

PHARMACY MATTERS with Peter Badham
Weight management service
The Lie by Helen Dunmore £7.99 PB This is more than a story of the First Wold War, and is recounted in the months after the Armistice when Daniel returns home to his Cornish routes. His mother died while he was away, so he is homeless. An elderly lady, Mary Pascoe, allows him to camp on her property, and in thanks he cultivates her land, then as she sickens, he cares for her. The lie is perpetuated when Mary dies, and he follows her wish and privately buries her in her garden; answering any village enquiries by stating she is bed-bound; which lie suffices until eventually the doctor calls. The lie is the skeleton of the novel on which the flesh of the story hangs. The reader learns about Daniel's childhood, and his friendship with Frederick, the son of the big house where his mother worked. They are best friends, blood brothers, playing together along with Felicia his sister, who now, a young war widow, lives in the house along with her daughter. Daniel and Felicia mourn the loss of Frederick, who as gentry was an officer and Daniel's platoon commander, and whose death he witnessed, even risking his own life to rescue his friend. The flashbacks to the trenches are movingly and realistically recounted, yet this is not another first world war novel. It is about friendship, comradeship, and loss. How two young friends, Daniel and Felicia share their sorrow, and yet Daniel's honest fulfillment of an old lady's wish, unravels his life as the lie in exposed. Selected by: Ian B. Nicholson Alison’s Bookshop & Music Room 138-9 High Street Tewkesbury
As part of our commitment to our new Healthy Living Pharmacy status Badham Pharmacy have launched a new free weight management service ready for the Summer, writes Peter Badham. We all want to enjoy the hot weather and look our best in summer clothes. Clients who enrol in the service during May and June will have their names put in a hat, and the winner will be given a £50 voucher. We really want to get behind this service as excessive weight is the common evil, affecting
our health across a raft of other conditions,
Peter Badham like diabetes, blood pressure and cancer. Our trained advisors work with clients to set clear/realistic goals. Normally a loss of 0.5 to 1kg per week is excel-
lent. Weight control is a life style change, with clear action plans. An increase in exercise, walking, swimming etc and a better control of diet. Some of our clients have lost over a stone, which is a phenomenal achievement At one of our branches recently i did an audit with a client , to find our how she found the service, and she told me that she was going to have a gastric band fitted, but decided to try our programme first. She was on target, what a great result!!! Peter Badham

VOLKSWRECKS, A NEW LIFE FOR OLD FAVORITES For lovers of old Volkswagens there is a company in Tewkesbury that can transform old wrecks back into somebody’s pride and joy. Ray and Tracey Tunnicliffe of Volkswrecks in Delta Drive have years of experience in restoring VW classics including Beetles, Campers, Square Backs, Karmann, Ghia and Trekkers. Some of the vehicles customers want restored are up to sixty years old, but with the right con-
tacts for spare parts and through knowledge of the marque, Ray and his staff can restore or modify vehicles for a new life on the road. Ray and Tracey’s daughter, Skye, has now joined the business as an apprentice and is using the knowledge passed on by her father to become a fully qualified mechanic. It is good to see a business save classic cars in a day and age when everything else gets thrown away or scrapped.
After all there are now many missing examples of our motoring past,
remember the Allegro, Toyota Crown, Datsun Violet, Talbot Tagora and
many more which are now just memories. To find out how
Volkswrecks can help you, ring 01684 292650.

Peter Gallagher from Uckinghall has created The Really Simple Accounts book which should be a helping hand for small businesses. Over the forty years he had been practising as a Chartered Accountant he had distributed numerous accounting books to numerous clients and he was never happy with what he was distributing! About two years ago the publisher of the book that Peter had been using for many years ‘disappeared’ and so he took it upon himself to design the sort of book that he would like clients to complete. The Really Simple Accounts Book was born! The book is aimed at new and/or small businesses who are not (yet) willing to operate a computerised system. It simply traps the basic raw data of financial transactions as they happen. To find out more please check out www.ivydenepublishing.com or call Peter on 01684 594755. TEWKESBURY DIRECT - 25

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
FROM WHARF TO LOCK As the weather gets warmer and the lighter evenings arrive, there’s nothing better than a stroll along the river. And there’s no better river to stroll beside than Shakespeare’s Avon, writes Jack B. Walker.
䡵 The lovely old sandstone bridge over the River Avon at Eckington Wharf
This is a ‘there and back again’ walk, which also offers an opportunity to call for a pint or a bite to eat at a classic country pub. The starting point is Eckington Wharf Car Park (on the B4080) where there is also a riverside picnic area. Leave the car park
and cross the red sandstone Eckington bridge, and go through a kissing gate on the right (1). You are now on common land known as Asham Meadow; the most picturesque route is to follow the path along the river until you come to a bend known as the Swan’s Neck. As
Free Flea Advice from Folly Gardens Tewkesbury's family run veterinary clinic How many of us are only aware that our dog or cat may have fleas when we see signs of discomfort in our pet with frantic scratching, itching and licking or worse, when we find a tell-tale flea bite on our own arms or legs? How many of us even know how or where to look for fleas or what a tick looks like? 䊳
Free flea and tick checks
Help is at hand as this summer, Folly Gardens Veterinary Clinic is supporting the Big Flea Guarantee. Under this scheme, we are offering to give dogs a FREE FLEA and tick check together with a consultation on the best flea and tick treatment available to keep dogs flea and tick free. Simply go to www.mypetonline.co.uk to download a voucher. Once you have downloaded your voucher, contact Folly Gardens on 01684 292244 OR our Bishops Cleeve clinic on 01242 679880 to make an appointment for your ‘Free Flea Check’, making them aware of the voucher. Hand in this voucher to Folly Gardens Reception, where it will be accepted as full payment for one flea examination to check your dog for fleas. 䊳
New treatment options for fleas and ticks
Forgotten to treat your dog for fleas and ticks?
the river loops round, look for a lane at the edge of some trees (2) and turn right along it. The lane bears left and reaches a T junction (3). Turn right and follow the lane until it passes some houses on the right and emerges on to a road in the village of Birlingham. Turn right (4) and follow the lane as it wanders around a paddock and meets some houses. Turn right (5) into Grange Road and continue to the junction with Berwick Lane (6). Bear right along the lane, passing a farm on your right. Eventually the lane becomes a rough track, which is susceptible to flooding after heavy rain. At the end of the lane you will reach a small fishermen’s car park, and the entrance to the Gwen Finch Nature Reserve (7). This is now a haven for wildlife, (not normally open to the public), which consists of large wetland areas. As well as a variety of water birds, otters have been seen here. Follow the lane along the edge of a wood and
over the fast flowing Berwick Brook. Keep straight on and look for another bridge on your right (8) which goes over a weir. Cross with care. You are now on an island in the middle of the Avon! Follow the path ahead until you reach Nafford Lock (9). For a view of the 20 hectare Gwen Finch nature reserve, cross the swing bridge over the lock and then follow the footpath over another weir and up the bank towards the road (V). You can see the scrapes and reed beds opposite you (even better if you have remembered to bring binoculars!). Retrace your steps to Birlingham: on reaching Asham Meadow there is a shorter route diagonally across the centre of the field which you can take if you wish. To visit the Swan Inn at Birlingham, which serves good food and has a very pleasant garden, when you get back to point (4) walk straight up the road towards the church. The pub is along Church Street (the second lane on the right)
Surveys show that many of us are failing to protect our pets adequately against fleas and ticks, often we are not using the right treatment or frequently enough. A 2010 survey of dog owners using monthly spot-on tick treatments found that these products were not used as recommended in 56% of dogs. With climate change bringing warmer, wetter winters and warm dry summers, the challenge of keeping our pets and homes flea and tick free has never been greater.
But there is an answer – scientific advances have brought innovative solutions to the control of parasites in our pets, with a broad range of modern products with improved activity, efficacy and convenience available on prescription from our vets. Folly Gardens offers a wide range of flea treatments including spot-ons, collars and chewable formulations. Spot-ons are typically applied every four weeks where as we now have a NEW chewable tablet to be given every 12 weeks.
Did You Know? A single female flea can produce up to 1,500 eggs each month Adult fleas can survive on your pet for up to 113 days, or even longer

The church spire (3) is at the village of Eldersfield, and in the middle distance (4) is Hardwick’s Hay. The large grass verge or ‘lawn’ from which the village takes its name runs either side of the B4211- and to the east of this road fertile farmland (6) runs down to the River Severn. Historic Award Former Tewkesbury School student Tom Wilkinson is this year’s recipient of Tewkesbury Historical Society’s Woodard Award.
䡵 Tom Wilkinson
The Woodard Award is judged annually by two independent judges, David Evans (an academic and author) and Dr. Steven Blake (now Chairman of the Gloucestershire Local History Forum). It is awarded to an article published in the THS Bulletin which, in the judges opinion, is not only well researched and written but which places the subject in its wider historical context. Tom won the award for his essay ‘Did the Purchase of Tewkesbury
Abbey Reflect the Continuation of Traditional Catholic Belief?’ Society chairman John Dixon said “Originally Tom contacted me whilst undertaking his dissertation for the BA degree and I asked him to write us this article. “He is now an NQT at Severn Vale School. “Not knowing why he had been summoned to our meeting, he delivered a short but excellent acceptance speech. Congratulations, Tom.”

NESSIES NIPPERS NEW CHILDMINDERS NOW OPEN Local lady, Vanessa Tocknell, wrote into us recently and told us how she is setting up as a childminder in her home in Northway. She has spent the past year doing courses to become a childminder. After her second child and working at Morrisons for six years, Vanessa thought it was a good idea as she loves kids interaction. Vanessa has converted her garage into a lovely playroom and made the garden very child friendly. She is fully flexible and offering potentially many parents an excellent childcare service at competitive prices, either for just holidays or term time. She also offers a pay as you go childcare, so if parents need to go to an appointment, want to shop or go for a coffee, they can drop their kids off, pay for what they want, then go with no contract needed! Please check out Vanessa’s website www.nessiesnippers.com or call 01684 292229 for more information.

GETTING THE MOST FROM CYCLING - by Andy Dallibar
CYCLING WITH CONSIDERATION The topic of consideration affects all those who cycle. I know we have our rights but we need to improve the image of the cyclist by treating people kindly and with a smile. Don't get me wrong. If I feel that my safety is threatened by pedestrians or drivers, I do let them know. Even in the last week, I have had several unpleasant experiences.
Firstly I was cycling along Tewkesbury High Street and even though
the crossing light was red, someone walked straight into my path

which caused me to swerve. The second incident when I had the right of way at a crossroads. I stamped on the pedals to get across the junction only to have a car turn across in front of me coming from the other direction. Riding a bike should be enjoyable, not stressful but with experience comes confidence. In my recent incidents, a flick of the steering and a dab of the brakes saw me well. The majority of road users are very polite, considerate and patient. The sight of someone riding a bike should be
encouraged. More on this next time. Just start by giving no one the need to complain.

Autocolour Services serve both private trade and insurance customers in all aspects of vehicle body work, from a small scratch to large scale accident damage on cars and commercial vehicles. This allows the bodywork specialists to work on vehicles up to 14 metres long with environmentally friendly materials and water borne paints. Carrie Peirce of ‘Autocolour Services’ noted “The move to Tewkesbury and larger premises was vital for our continued expansion of the business, particularly allowing us to comfortably accommodate commercial vehicle repairs. GREAT EVENINGS AHEAD By the time this magazine hits your doormats, Tewkesbury’s coolest new theme bar will have opened. Red Bar is the concept of local business woman Heather, who opened the Gallery at the Cross in 2013. Heather has now imprinted her love and knowledge of paintings on the Tudor interior of 12 High Street (next to HSBC), and come up with a unique themed bar which showcases original works of art. Red Bar occupies two upper floors and comprises a large bar area, 2 lounges and a further function room which can seat up to forty people. Heather has achieved what she set out to create: an original and stimulating venue where people can relax, meet and enjoy live music twice monthly, plus other entertainment. Every fourth Wednesday in the month there will be a comedy evening featuring Scallywags as the regular act: the first one will be on Wednesday 26th June. In due course food will be available too: in the meantime customers will be invited to chalk up the dishes they would

Life is what you make it Calling all aspiring artists: a Life Drawing Workshop is being held at the Paint Pot in Tewkesbury this month. It promises to be a great, relaxed class with plenty of instructions for beginners and advice for those who are more experienced. All the elements of life drawing will be covered - including, gesture, proportion, perspective and tone.
Participants will have the opportunity to work with different materials such as charcoal, pen, pastels and coloured paper. The day includes a series of ‘quick-fire’ sketches and warm up techniques, moving into longer more in-depth drawing. This five hour workshop will be held on Sunday 29th June 11am - 4pm, at the Paint Pot in Barton Street, Tewkesbury. The cost is £45, to include all tuition, materials and life model fees. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch. Please bring your own lunch (which you are welcome to eat at the studio) or you can visit one of the nearby cafes. Commemorating the Battle of Tewkesbury, the sculptures have been placed on and near the Stonehills roundabout, where the A38 Gloucester Road meets the Tewkesbury relief road on the southern edge of the town. It was from here the Yorkist forces would have had their first sight of their Lancastrian opponents on the morning of the Battle. Henry VI’s only son, Edward Prince of Wales, had returned to England with his mother Queen Margaret, and their objective was to raise an army in the south west and cross the Severn at Gloucester to muster forces in Wales. King Edward sent orders to Gloucester to close the city gates, forcing the Lancastrians to march north to try and cross the river at Tewkesbury. They were intercepted by the King’s forces and forced to stand and fight until they were defeated. The sculptures are named after ‘The Arrivall’ - the title of an abbreviated account of Edward IV’s recovery of the English throne from Henry VI in 1471. Opposing armies are each represented by a single monumentallyscaled oak sculpture. the roundabout itself. The second piece, a riderless horse with a similar lance resting across its back, stands on the verge opposite the roundabout, facing the mounted knight. Its head is bowed and represents the defeated Lancastrian army. The sculptures were
designed and constructed by Philip Bews in the Forest of Dean, using selected boughs of green English oak, their natural bends and forks recreating the limbs and outline of the horses. These boughs also reflect the timbers seen in many of Tewkesbury’s historic buildings.

POLICE NOTES with Sgt Henry Wright
ADVICE FOR SAFER SUMMER MOTORING I thought that this month I would start off with a few driving tips for the summer, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright. While there are less hazards on the road summer breakdowns can cause misery and inconvenience, the roads are often very busy especially on holiday routes. High temperatures put extra demand on both the vehicle and the driver, ensuring that your car is prepared makes good sense. Before setting off check that all the lights are working and the coolant and washer bottle are topped up, ensure that you check your tyres for any wear and that they are inflated correctly. If you are going on holiday and carrying extra luggage it is worth consulting the handbook and adjusting the pressures as recommended. On long journeys always allow plenty of time and take regular breaks every two hours or so. If you are travelling with children they can easily get bored so ensure that you take a toy or game to keep them occupied. It is also good idea to take the spare set of keys a day trip to the beach will be ruined by lost or wet keys that will not open the central locking. Local police have been handing out marking kits for catalytic converters which are still a being stolen from certain types of vehicles especially vans and 4x4s with a high ground clearance. It can be difficult to protect your vehicle from this type of crime but
remember to park your vehicle in a well-lit area if possible, use a garage if you have one and if you are replacing the exhaust system consider fitting a security device. On a final note please be very wary of leaving
open windows and doors in this spell of good weather and never go out into the rear garden without locking your front door and windows. Police Sergeant Henry Wright Tewkesbury

Rob King has run his popular model shop there for a number of years without any problems. That is until recently, when another “Rob”turned up in what can only be described as a takeover bid. New Tewkesbury leisure centre plans unveiled to the public Proposed outline plans for a new leisure centre for Tewkesbury Borough were revealed last month, as part of a pre-planning application consultation Tewkesbury Borough Council is working towards building a new leisure centre to replace
its current one, Cascades, and this consultation was first stage of the council gathering

public views on draft plans. Importantly, at this early stage, the council wants to make it clear that the consultation is to get the public’s view on the general site plan as part of the planning process. More detailed consultation using an artist’s impression and 3D images is anticipated to take place in July, once the final design has been worked up. The borough council, which has already agreed that a site located within the council grounds is the preferred and most value-formoney location, hopes to make savings by providing a centre with a wider range of energy-efficient facilities that will help to generate more income. It is also anticipated that a new centre will support the council’s
Health and Well-being Strategy to increase participation in sport. It has been agreed that building a new leisure centre is the most cost effective option because refurbishment of Cascades have been estimated to be at least £3.8million.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater
Raising the level of your self-confidence Need to boost self confidence? asks David Slater, local hypnotherapist and counsellor. Here are some pointers to raise the level of self-confidence 1. Use positive imagery and self-talk The way to self-confidence is primarily a mental exercise. Visualizing yourself as a
confident person is one way to create a confident mentality and personality. Positive affirmations are another way of building confidence. Tell

yourself that you are a confident person and don't give negative thoughts room to grow. Think negative and you behave negatively. Think positive and see your world begin to change ! 2. Set goals This is the same with anything you want to achieve, building confidence is made easier if you set clear goals for yourself. 3. Take small, manageable steps If you're not feeling confident, you will be much more likely to achieve your desired level of confidence by taking small steps. These will be steps which stretch you just a little BUT are within your reach. 4. Practice a confident attitude You may have heard this sentiment expressed as, "fake it 'til you make it." You can gain confidence by acting like a confident person. Nobody needs to know that you're cringing underneath your confident façade. The day will most certainly arrive when you'll no longer need to pretend. The success you experience from acting confidently and the confident habits you've developed will lead to true confidence which will life long ! 5. Work on your conversational skills Improving your conversational skills can help you feel more com-
fortable and confident in any social situation which will lead to increased confidence overall. I suggest that you practice maintaining eye contact and being a good listener. 6. Get involved When you become involved in an organization, project or committee, the new experiences, improved skills and chances for leadership and personal development can help improve confidence. Think about joining a professional organization, signing up for a committee at work or volunteering your time at a worthwhile organization. 7. Seek professional help Motivational speakers make their living from helping people make the most of their lives, which often involves helping their listeners build confidence. If there are more deep-seated issues getting in the way of feeling confident, you may wish to look into counselling or perhaps clinical hypnotherapy as a source of help. 8. Be happy with yourself Having an essentially positive attitude toward yourself is key to gaining confidence. You must be happy with the person you are, from your personality to your appearance, before you can truly be confident. Start today and KNOW that you CAN and WILL do it.

CATS, DOGS AND WILDLIFE - AN UNFORTUNATE MIX At Vale Wildlife Hospital we are very used to a large number of casualties coming in due to cat predation, especially at this time of year, writes Caroline Gould of the Beckford-based animal rescue centre. Spend a day in our reception where casualties are admitted and you will see patient after patient arriving, often 15-20 per day, with the finders all giving the same story, ‘it’s been caught by the cat’. Fledglings that have just left the nest are very vulnerable as are nests with eggs and newlyhatched chicks in. Adult birds too are caught more often during breeding season as they are so busy collecting nesting material or food for babies that they are less vigilant around this time. It’s very sad to see so much damage done by a domesticated animal. Because of the way that cats are kept, often free to come and go as they please, it is very difficult to stop this pre-

Vale Wildlife’s thirtieth anniversary open day dation of our wildlife (although we would always advise putting a collar and bell on them and keep them in as much as possible at this time of year). You would think that dogs were a different matter as they should be kept under control and ought to be kept on leads when being walked in a public place. So far this year we have treated a number of animals that have been caught by dogs These include several hedgehogs, (luckily largely unharmed and the dogs usually come
off worse); several nests of baby rabbits; a leveret, again caught by an off-lead dog as was a stoat that died shortly after being admitted to Vale. There was also a deer that was attacked by a dog that was off the lead and sustained such serious injuries that we had to put it to sleep.
Remember to come along to our 30th Anniversary Open Day on Sunday 8th June, 10am-4pm. It promises to be a fantastic day with things for the whole family and will be opened by Countryfile’s Ellie Harrison: crafts, wildlife charities, kids games, talks by various experts, Ask the Vet, Paws for Thought dog agility team, tombolas, raffles, licensed bar, loads of food including vegan and vegetarian, Abbot’s Flyball Team and lots of information about the work we do at Vale. Please come and support us and help us to continue our work for another 30 years. Caroline Gould
