Once again Tewkesbury has been transformed into a winter wonderland, thanks to the efforts of the good people of the town. On Sunday 23rd November, the illuminations were switched on by Father Christmas himself - and thousands thronged the streets for the occasion, visiting the craft fair and farmers market. The event was organised by Tewkesbury’s Chamber of Commerce and is sponsored by Rifina, L3 -TRL Technology and Screwfix. Tewkesbury Borough

Twyning Church Donation Continues 100 Years of History www.tewkesburydirect.co.uk
While much of Britain has been giving thought to the outbreak and centenary of the First World War, a summer flower festival and a concert held at Twyning Parish Church, near Tewksbury, has helped the village’s community to go one better. ‘Twyning Reflects’, the theme chosen for the event has recreated links that were initially forged with the services at the time of World War 1 and led to the presentation of a cheque for £1,000 to the Soldiers Sailors and Airmens Families Association (SSAFA), the only forces charity operating when war was declared. The Money came from a collection and donations made by visitors to the festival, which presented detailed exhibits showing the people of the village and their lives in and around 1914. There were also many facts about the men of Twyning who died and those who survived to return to the village and its local community. The cheque was handed over to some of SSAFA’s volunteers at the Soldier’s of Gloucestershire Museum by the church treasurer, Richard Bailey and the
Ven Ron Hesketh, who lives in Twyning and is the former Chaplain in Chief of the Royal Air Force. Accepting the donation, its county chairman, Col Tony Singer said: “Although we are a national charity, we operate on a uniquely local basis, so all funds collected in the county stay in the county. “We are very grateful to the people of Twyning for a very generous donation and guarantee it will be put to very good use.” Ex Air Vice Marshall Ron Hesketh commented; “Planning the festival display, we discovered the enormous impact of World War One on our community and the families of those who served. “We are delighted to re-establish these links and know that with SSAFA, the donations given by our village are going to be put to very good use.”

ANT CLEANS UP PRIORS COURT MOORINGS Once the water levels returned to normal on the Mill Avon in Tewkesbury the Avon Navigation Trust (ANT) were able to undertake some much-needed tidying up work. Unsightly remains of broken moorings and other rubbish have now been removed from the area. ANT is a charitable trust dependant on volunteers; during The Big Weekend earlier in the year they were responsible for the activities that took place on the water such as the dragon boats races. A third of the money raised that weekend was donated to ANT and put towards the work. Paul Cronin explained, 'As

LOCAL NATURALIST’S BOOK IS A DELIGHT John Clarke is a local naturalist and independent Conservation Adviser, who has just published a fascinating book about his experiences. As Adviser to Kemerton Conservation Trust, John is known to many local people and well beyond. With the help of more than 120 local people from nine Bredon Hill villages he carried out a nine-year study of the rare migrant bird from Africa – the S p o t t e d Flycatcher - and wrote a small book on the project. He and his wife Pamela have been studying and working in farming and wildlife for about 35 years. “We are not scientists but we do scientific things”, John says. Mostly based in this area, they also spent eight years on the Scottish island of Colonsay and also worked across Scotland and in many parts of England. Since his late teens John has written poetry, notes and accounts of incidents and occasions, all affecting his life in farming and wildlife. For the past 20 years serious illnesses have
curtailed his work but he still manages to be out there – “at the sharp end”, as he calls it. When he was once again ‘trapped’ indoors – this time with a fractured leg – his local GP discovered his background and suggested he should write it down. When he found out about all the past writings – now stored in drawers and on computer - he then encouraged John to write a book and thus ‘Growing Wild’ was born. John had no idea how to publish a book so found a printer who laid the whole thing out and ran off copies. Sometimes, hilarious and sometimes very moving, the book charts the events and moments in his life which have influenced his journey. John and his art teacher on Colonsay produced sketches to illustrate some of his writings.

Severn Unit MVS Celebrates Trafalgar Night Dinner The Tewkesbury-based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service marked their fourteenth Trafalgar Night Dinner at the end of October. The celebrations were held at TS Otter, the Sea Cadet Unit in the town, and it was a most successful evening. The principal guest was Volunteer Officer Lieutenant Commander John Spencer-Barnes National Communications Manager of the service - who proposed the toast to the Immortal Memory. Head of Unit Nic Price said: “John was just back from Gibraltar and gallantly fulfilled this important duty at short notice due to the intended speaker being unable to attend. “He is no stranger to the area, as although he now works as a radio broadcaster and journalist for BBC Radio Lancashire, he was formerly with BBC Hereford and Worcester and Severn Sound in Gloucester.” During the evening one of Severn Unit's members, Ben FosterSmith, was given promotion to Leading Seaman. WORK UNDER WAY TO IMPROVE TEWKESBURY’S NATURE RESERVE Tewkesbury Nature Reserve is a 114 acre site is situated between Jubilee Way and the Priors Park Estate, and opposite Morrisons’ Supermarket. It has evolved to benefit wildlife and the local community by developing the green infrastructure within Tewkesbury, enhancing biodiversity and improving urban " Tewkesbury Nature Reserve
drainage. Tewkesbury Nature Reserve Ltd (TNR) is a charitable company limited by guarantee, and was set up to manage the nature reserve. If you have been to the reserve in the recent weeks you will have noticed heavy machinery working in various parts of the site. The first hole was dug in August in the SE field and quickly filled with water - no surprise there! This is the beginning of a new reed bed, and last month work was undertaken to transplant some of the existing reeds into this area, providing an excellent habitat to encourage water birds and wildlife. The other works are to add meanders to the flow of the river. In several areas the 8 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT
river bank is being lowered to widen the flow so that when the Swilgate begins to overflow the water has a wider flow area, which avoids pinch points that would speed up the flow into the main rivers. TNR believes that when the work has been completed and nature has done its work too, it will provide much more pleasant walks for Tewkesbury residents. The fencing contractors have a number of tasks. They are managing hedges in these SW fields and pollarding a number of the tall willow trees. They are also tidying up entrances by adding gates and kissing gates, the latter large enough to allow mobility scooters. TNR is currently in discussions to add a bridge across the southern part of the river, and is getting ready for planting in December a thirty six tree community orchard opposite the allotments, by the concrete path leading to Queens Road.

He commenced in business in 133 High Street, made a good " (above) the site of Papps’ store today and marriage to the (left) the patriarch’s Diamond Wedding in 1908 Osborne Family of Grocers, moved up flying his flag from 144-146 (2014: to 142 High Street Edinburgh Woollen Mill & Holland & Barratt) (TSB Bank) before and 7 High Street (2014: Cards & Gifts). The grandiose expansion was credited to son Ernest who had visited the USA and returned with new ideas. FOODBANK GETS £3000 AWARD Tewkesbury Foodbank has been awarded £3,000 in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund scheme. The financial reward was decided by the public who were able to cast their vote both online and in local branches. Since opening its doors in April 2013, the Foodbank has served more than 1200 adults and children in the Tewkesbury area, providing three days’ worth of emergency food to those in food crisis from its base at Trinity Holy Church. The Foodbank plans to use the cash during the Christmas period, to give extra seasonal items to those people who will be using the Foodbank, and to others in the local community who are in need. ANOTHER YEAR OF HELPING LOCAL WILDLIFE As 2014, our 30th year of rescuing, treating and rehabilitating the UK’s wildlife, draws to a close, we are once again inundated with young, underweight hedgehogs requiring accommodation through the winter months, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue. At the time of writing this we are caring for over 130 of our prickly friends and that number is increasing daily with anything up to a dozen a day coming in. At this time of year, juvenile, second litter hoglets are being found out during the day, desperately looking for food to enable them to put on enough fat reserves to survive the cold weather. As the night-time temperatures drop to freezing, a hedgehog has to weigh at least 650 grams to ensure its survival through hibernation and a majority of the ones we are admitting to Vale at the moment are less than half of that weight. If they aren't found and taken into care the chances are that they will not survive through to the warmer months. 2014 has been another busy year for us at Vale. To date this year, we have dealt with 3,843 casualties (with 247 animals in care at the moment), ranging from the tiniest of baby bats weighing around 1 gram, all the way up to adult fallow deer at 50 kilos plus. We never know what is going to come through the door next and we have to be prepared to deal with any mammal, bird or reptile or amphibian that needs our help.

Local knitting group K2Togs are hoping Tewkesbury will become known (amongst many other things) as the town that ‘knits the panto’.

Last year they successfully created a knitted version of Jack and the Beanstalk. This year’s panto at The Roses Theatre is Beauty and the Beast, and the group, plus others around town, are busy ‘French Knitting’ to create chandeliers, complete with knitted candles, and bunting to adorn the theatre. K2Togs is a community group, formed from a core of knitters who helped with Jack and the Beanstalk. They now
number over twenty members, with at least 10-15 turning up each week at The Roses on a Wednesday morning. They are a charity knitting group and their default position is knitting 8” squares, which are sent to South Africa to be made into blankets for AIDS orphans. They do branch off into other things, recently knitting little hats for Innocent Smoothies in aid of Age UK, as well as turning their hand to panto.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
In Winter time on Bredon The lower slopes of Bredon Hill - an outlier of the Cotswolds - are ringed with charming villages. Many walkers merely pass through these streets of attractive cottages on their way to higher routes. This month’s ramble takes time to look at three different village, each with its own unique character. Starting from the war memorial in the centre of Kemerton village, walk down the lane towards church and at the crossroads, turn left. You will pass some farm buildings, and at the end of the tarmac road take the path through the trees. At the bottom of the slope, turn left just before the stream and go through a five bar gate into a field (1). The ground can be quite boggy here. Follow the path right across the field to a farm gate, go through and take the same line to cross a footbridge in the next field. (2). Keep ahead and go over a stile, then yet another plank bridge and two more stiles to reach the lower grounds of Overbury Estate (3). Overbury Court is visible away to your left. Go diagonally across the field towards the agricultural buildings in the Estate Yard. Go through

a kissing gate and follow the yellow way markers, passing some garages and up a slope past a wood store (see photo above). At the end of the fence, turn left (4) up a track, passing some barns on the left, and into Overbury village. On meeting the road (5) turn left, and walk past the Church and a high stone wall. Cross to the right hand side of the road as you walk out of the village, and look for a metal gate on your right (6). Go through the gate and follow the arrows
across the field to another small gate. Pass through it and walk ahead, keeping the

hedge to your right. (Temporary fences and gates are sometimes added into this field). Eventually you will meet a lane coming up from Kemerton (7). Walk straight ahead
down a lane, passing a farm on your right. At the next junction keep straight ahead into Bayliss Road, and look for a path in front of you, leading between some houses into a field (8). The path bears right, then left, to skirt the right hand side of the field. Keep on this path, go through a gap in a hedge and keep the same line, eventually emerging on to the road in Westmancote (9). Turn left and walk down through the village, until you reach a three way junction. Bear right along the road towards Bredon for a short distance, then cross opposite the bus shelter (10) and take a narrow path into some trees at the side of a bungalow. Keep following this path until you emerge through a small gate, cross a small plantation and meet a broader track (11). Turn right along this track, then left

When you reach the road (13) turn right, then take the next road on the left back into Kemerton village (14). This is Back Lane, which wends its way gently upwards, with some fine old buildings along the way. After passing the black and white Old Manor, and then Kemerton Court, look for a small green
with an attractive Georgian House set back to the right. (15). Take the footpath which passes between a cottage and Upper Court’s gardens (to the left), down to a small lake. The remains of an old cider mill can be seen here too. Keep the lake to your right, and at the end of the bank go along the path into the trees, then over a footbridge to return to point (1).

Northway’s former provender factory Because of factory developments, it would be practically impossible to take a “Now” picture (A) to replicate Steve Mourton’s delightful photograph from “Then” (B) - the engine is long gone as is the railway - and we have lost the grandiose beauty of the former Midland Railway “Provender Factory”. It is a reminder of the days when even steam railways employed thousands of dray horses and needed to provide fodder for them. The building has subsequently been known as “Birds Custard Factory” and more recently it was owned by Dowty’s. Now it is only a sad rump, located in the Northway Industrial Estate after a fire demolished the top two floors. Derek Round can remember his mother working there in the post-war era and she recalled a pungent smell in the top floor. His theory is that, in World War I, it was used an aircraft factory, operated by Collins and Godfrey when wood was still a component. Jan Broekman has supplied this photograph (C) which contains her mother, Doris Gannaway, who worked there in 1918 making “ailerons”: these were made on a jig from two long strips of wood ….. covered with very strong Irish linen .…. then the Aileron was taken to the Dope Room and covered with Dope until it was stiff. This was a horrible job for the girls – it smelt awful and was a very dirty job”. This may be the lingering smell, which Derek thinks his mother recalled. Can anyone tell us more about this previously iconic building and Tewkesbury’s industries in World War I? John Dixon

LOST FLAG ON DISPLAY A Union Flag that was found in a bricked up room has been on display during November in the window of local florist shop, Petite Fleur. Owner Caroline Bartlett, opened up the bricked up wall in her shop in Tewkesbury's High Street and found the Flag, Staff and an Army rucksack. It is unclear how old
the flag is but it could be from the first or second world war judging by the construction of the staff. Caroline now uses the flag in her tribute to Remembrance day.

BREDON AFC JUNIOR FOOTBALL Formed in 2013, Bredon Juniors have grown rapidly, providing football for five to ten year old boys and girls. The under 8’s and under 10’s have recently joined the Ambassador Evesham Football League and are very excited about the season ahead. GUIDING GROWING IN TEWKESBURY by Jane Adkins Last month saw the new formation of a Rainbow unit in Tewkesbury. Rainbow leader Tami Taylor, also known as Sparkle to the girls, has opened a new Rainbow Unit. Tami is now running two units in Tewkesbury. Parents, grandparents, family and friends gathered at Tewkesbury Abbey to watch the girls make their promise. Also present at the evening was our County Girl Guiding President, Mrs Cadbury OBE, JP, DL. The evening started with the Rainbow Song, used at the opening ceremony of Rainbow meetings. Tami Taylor then explained to the girls and watching family & friends, the meaning of their promise. In unison, the girls took their promise and proudly displayed their Rainbow badges on their uniforms. Mrs Cadbury congratulated the girls for tak-
ing their promise and praised the formation of the new Rainbow unit in the town. Mrs Cadbury said, “It’s wonderful to attend another promise ceremony here in Tewkesbury Abbey only eleven months ago a new Brownie unit took their promise”. She also added, “It’s great to see Guiding growing in Tewkesbury”. Tami thanked the Revd Canon Paul Williams for allowing the girls to take their Promise in Tewkesbury Abbey. The Mummer’s Plays were a lively community entertainment during the Tudor times and were particularly popular at Christmas.
People performing the plays would tour the town or village in fancy dress wearing masks, often disguised as animals or good spirits. They would dance and sing to celebrate the changing season and the end of the year. Pop along to the John Moore Museum on a

Tewkesbury’s Royal Hop Pole Hotel - made famous by Charles Dickens in his ‘Pickwick Papers,’ has enjoyed yet another momentous year. For 2014 it has been named ‘pub of the year’ by the Tewkesbury Branch of CAMRA, received a Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor - and also achieved a Platinum ‘Loo of the Year’ Award. Customers and staff have been rallying in support of good causes too. Manager Stuart Coxshall ran the London Marathon in 4 hours 7 minutes, netting £3490 for charity. Since the hotel re-opened its doors to the public six years ago, a staggering £23,000 has been raised for the charity CLIC. Manager Linda Coxshall said: “Once again we’d like to thank all our customers and staff for making it such a successful year. It’s a magnificent achievement.” The Royal Hop Pole, in Church Street, dates back to the fifteenth century. It closed in 2006, but was purchased by JD Wetherspoon and totally refurbished before re-opening in 2008. As well as the award-winning pub and restaurant, the Royal Hop Pole has 28 en-suite bedrooms.

AFTER A REPRESENTATIVE from the Beverage Standards Association secretly sampled the coffee at Caffe e Vino in Church Street, Tewkesbury their cappuccino was nominated as one of the best in the UK for independent coffee shops. Co-owners Francesco Schena and Davide Ventola were invited an awards evening in Manchester, where they were nominated for the Best Cappuccino and also Best Overall Experience award categories. They received a Three Cup (Excellent) rating in both categories, under the Beverage Standards Awards, UK National Certificate of Achievement. Caffe e Vino opened in March this year and offers a wide selection of hot and cold drinks, cakes, light lunches and specials. They are also open twice a month for Italian regional themed evening meals. Nationally renowned author, Phil Rickman was also in Alison’s Bookshop recently to launch his new novel, Night After Night - a crime/mystery set in and around Winchcombe and Sudeley Castle. The Maid's Version by Daniel Woodrell PB £8.99 This book is about an explosion and fire which devastates a Missouri dance hall in 1929. The events of that night are eventually recalled by 'The Maid', Alma, whose sister, Ruby perished in the blaze. As she gradually recounts the story to her grandson, the reader learns about this catastrophe, the eventual investigation, possible cover up and Alma's pursuit of justice. Alma has never told anyone about any of this saga which changed her life around, made her homeless and estranged from her family. It was only when, after being helped by a friend, that she found a new job with Mrs Teague, where she now lives in retirement. There is speculation and intrigue about the fire, with the odd bit of subterfuge and some ex-marital dalliance to add to the mystery. The book gives vignettes of the lives of some who perished which inter-link

Planning permission for a new leisure centre in Tewkesbury Borough has been granted. Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Planning Committee met on Tuesday, 11 November and voted to permit the building of a brand new centre to replace the council’s current one - Cascades - which is now 40 years old. Located next to the council offices on Gloucester Road in Tewkesbury, the new leisure centre will include a main 25m pool as well as a 20m learner/trainer pool - which will be bigger and deeper than the current learner pool at Cascades - allowing more flexibility and the opportunity for more people to train and learn to swim. Recognising the popularity of the current fun features at Cascades, a paddling pool, bubble seats, water fountains and water cannons will be among the attractions built into the new centre. There will also be a whole host of dr y side facilities available too, including an adaptable 60 station gym, sauna and steam rooms, a flexible activities studio - which could be used for a whole range of sessions including dance, fitness classes and children's parties - and a café and shop.

The year seems to have flown past and Christmas is almost upon us once again, writes Police Sergeant Henry Wright of Tewkesbury Police. This is supposed to be a time of goodwill, unfortunately the local criminal fraternity do not seem to be participating as we are still dealing with an increase in dwelling burglaries. Christmas is a family occasion but being a victim of crime will certainly ruin the festive period. I know I have men-
tioned crime prevention tips many times before but on the run up to Christmas the burglar knows that people may have extra cash in the house or expensive presents hidden away. Many of you will be buying expensive electrical gadgets, computers, jewellery or the latest must have accessories. Please make sure
that if gifts are placed under your tree that they are not visible from any door or window, give consideration to security marking any large electrical items or bicycles. Please note down any serial numbers from property this will help you get it back if any stolen items are recovered by police.

After Christmas dispose of any packaging very carefully don’t leave it outside to advertise the fact that Santa has brought a new games console. The next reminder is the danger of drinking and driving, the annual Christmas road safety campaign will be well under way by the time you read this article. Many of you will be out at parties over the Christmas and New Year period but can I warn you against the dangers of drinking and driving, I have often been asked the question how much can I drink and still be fit to drive ? There is only one safe limit and that is ZERO. If you are going out for a drink leave the car at home and get a taxi, just think of the consequences: a driving ban, heavy fine, loss of employment, difficulty getting the children to school. Even worse than all of these things if you were involved in an accident and you injured or killed someone the memory will be with you for the rest of your life. Following on with the theme of road safety make sure that your motor vehicle is ready for winter check the condition of your tyres and that the tread is at least 1.6 millimetres around the whole circumference ,check the coolant is topped up with anti freeze, always thoroughly de-ice the windscreen and windows prior to moving off and keep the washer bottle topped up solution. In very severe weather if your journey is essential take a hot drink and a blanket just in case you get stranded. If you’re a cyclist be seen and be safe get good quality lights and check the batteries and make sure the lenses and reflectors are serviceable and clean. Invest in a reflective jacket for cycling or walking to school in these dark winter mornings . All that is left is for me to wish you and your families a very happy Christmas and all the
best for 2015, I hope to see some of you over the festive period.

Think about them for a while and more than likely nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they start to trouble you. If you think about them all day long you will feel increasingly troubled and irritated. You will feel paralysed. You will very likely feel overburdened and unable to do anything!" Your lesson from this story ( which is a true example of real practice ) is that it is important to let go of your stresses as quickly as you can. As early as you can put all your burdens down. Put them out of your mind. Think about positive things. They ARE there ! Don't carry the burden with you through the day and certainly not into the night. REMEMBER TO PUT YOUR GLASS DOWN! Find something you like doing; listen to some music; chat with someone but NOT about your worries; watch something good on TV if you can find anything; even colour in like I suggested last month. I know this may not be the easiest thing to do at first BUT practice makes perfect. Have a Happy and Healthy Christmas and may the New Year be good for you, too! David Slater

A therapist walked round a room talking about stress and anxiety. She raised a glass of water from the table and held it out in front of her. The audience expected her to ask the old chestnut question " Is the glass half empty or half full ?". You know the one, I am sure. But, she didn't. Instead she smiled and asked" How heavy is this glass of water?" Answers ranger from 4 to 20oz!! She replied "The weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If i hold it for 1 minute it is fine. No problem. If I hold it with my harm stretched out like this for an hour I know my arm will ache quite a bit. If I hold it for a day my arm will feel numb and paralysed. Just think about it. The actual weight of the water doesn't change at all yet the longer i hold it the heavier it seems to become." She continued. "The stresses and worries of life are just like that glass of water.
