Welcome to Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival 2021!

Ko Manawaru te maunga Ko Te Arai te awa Ko Horouta te waka Ko Ruapani, Rongowhakaata, Ngāti Porou ōku iwi Tīhei Mauri ora!

It is my privilege and joy to bring you a celebration of the creative abundance of our place with our Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival 2021 programme.

Our team have been working hard to weave together the many strands of brilliance offered by our region’s artists and creatives. Though we have been faced with uncertainty in this recent outbreak, we’ve adapted. Segmenting a rich and illustrious offering of taonga, voices and artistic talent both this October and in February 2022.

Now, more than ever, we count on our creative community to light the dark and to reinstall the missing voices in our landscapes.

Welcome to the many offerings of the creative ngākau of Te Tairāwhiti woven with aroha by Tama and the team. Making a platform for connection at a time when we are navigating the uncertainty that a global pandemic brings is no small challenge, but once again our community of artists and creatives have risen to the challenge, while holding the wellbeing of the people at the heart of it all.

Ma te rongo, ka mārama. Through the space to listen and observe each other we can reach a place of enlightenment. It is my hope that our Festival is a place where we can all gather safely to celebrate the artist within.

We are so very grateful for the continuing support of funders and sponsors, for the work of our incredible team and the deep puna of kōrero that continues to inspire and fire the creative spirit of Te Tairāwhiti.

Spanning one hundred years between China and New Zealand, three generations of the Leung family are swept across continents and time; the Second World War, the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989, and the infamous buried history of the Poll Tax in New Zealand, £100 levied against Chinese migrants only (1896 to 1944).

Told through the eyes of a Chinese family as they struggle to resettle in Aotearoa, Ka-Shue (Letters Home) is an epic story of love, laughter, and loss, performing for one night only.

There will be a post-show talk following the performance.

With a hint of Divergent, and a dash of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Whakapaupākihi, serves to tell the epic story of three eponymous East Coast ancestors known as the sons of Iranui, who fought against each other to maintain autonomy for their people.

Combining kapa haka and theatre, experience the first reading of this locally-grown te reo Māori musical.

Students of Whāngārā School shared their view on climate issues, mātauranga Māori and science with leading climate scientist Dr Daniel Hikuroa, then spent a week with professional photographers Te Rawhitiroa Bosch, Hiria Barbara and Natalie Robertson.

Presented in collaboration with Track Zero, see the powerful statements and images taken from the point of view of Te Tairāwhiti tamariki who explore climate change and environmental issues in our region through the lens of a camera.

LAMENTATION In Lamentation, Professor Robert Jahnke (Ngāi Taharora, Te Whānau-a-Iritekura, Te Whānau-a-Rakairoa) commissioned poems by six indigenous poets, including Witi Ihimaera and Tina Makereti, for the Lamentation panels. Drawing on their texts, Jahnke laments the destruction of our natural world.

The anchor for this collaborative project was Te Tomokanga o te Ua featuring Rain by Hone Tūwhare on the walls and stacked fluorescent tubes within the portal. The pattern speaks of the misadventures of travellers who take shortcuts in haste to get to their destination. Its pattern is formed with stitches that fall vertically, like albatross tears, representing impending catastrophe.

1976-2021 WE CAN'T STOP NOW 9 OCT - 5 DEC The Gisborne Printmakers’ Group have operated continuously as a group since 1976 and have always been accommodated in the Lysnar House Studios behind Tairāwhiti Museum in Stout Street, Gisborne.

This exhibition celebrates the making of handmade prints by twenty-five past and present printmakers over 45 years. According to records held by the Printmaking Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (PCANZ), the Gisborne Group is the longest running printmaking group in the country.

Their practice is informed by tohunga and pūkenga from the creative council of Te Tairāwhiti. The collective say their Gallery is an ongoing expression of the continuum of Ngā Toi Māori that brings the knowledge of their tūpuna into a modern and evolving context.

INDIGENOUS ART SPACE Mark Kopua Indigenous Art Space is a storehouse for indigenous Māori knowledge as well as a place where our traditional stories are activated, physically on skin through the receiving of tāmoko as well as in print.

The studio walls are lined with prints of atua Māori that like the tukutuku in a meeting house show us the blueprint of how we connect to our whakapapa and history through our creative arts.

13-15 OCT | 9AM-4PM An animation wananga for rangatahi 14 years and over. Rangatahi will be introduced to pūrākau and waiata o Te Tairāwhiti and invited and supported to explore and express responses through animation.

TICKET CATEGORIES GENERAL ADMISSION There is no reserved seating, it’s first-come-firstserved. Arrive early to secure a good spot.

A RESERVE These are the best seats in the venue. With a clear view these seats offer the best vantage point for experiencing the show.

B RESERVE These are the second-best seats in the venue and offer a good view of the performance.

CONCESSION Concession prices apply for 65+ with SuperGold Card and Community Service Card holders, tertiary students (with valid ID), and high school students.

CHILD Children are aged 12 and under. Please note, only select shows have a child’s price.
