Welcome to our 2022-2023 Annual Report, a chance to review the financial health of Cardinal Newman High School, and honor the benefactors who gave from the heart to support the work we do.
Giving at all levels allows us to provide a transformative educational experience for our Cardinals. The names contained in these pages are the reason Cardinal Newman High School has continued to flourish for the past 60 years. It is only possible because of the support and generosity of our Cardinal Community, and the grace of God – the vine that keeps us rooted and renewed through every season. “I am the vine, you are the branches. As we review the 2022-2023 fiscal year and express our gratitude, it is easy to see all the ways we fulfill our mission each day, educating students in the wholeness of body, mind, and soul; Consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church; Manifested by faith, leadership, and service. Our faith-filled academic environment fosters Catholic values. We emphasize academic excellence and personal growth. We embrace creativity and self-awareness. We nourish physical and social health. We support the tradition of Catholic Social Justice and advocate responsibility for, and service to, our local and global communities.
Although this Annual Report aims to showcase what makes Cardinal Newman such a special place, we understand that a comprehensive representation goes beyond pictures and words on paper. Whether it is related to faith, finance, curriculum, or service, the diversity of our school community serves as a constant reminder of the blessings we enjoy. We truly appreciate your unwavering support for Cardinal Newman High School.

Every effort was made to ensure the accuracy of the listings presented in this report and hope you will accept our sincere apologies for any errors or omissions.
In fall 2022, Cardinal Newman community members – Board Members, Donors, Alumni, Parents, Parents of Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Friends, and Students – provided feedback to help determine the strategic direction and allocation of efforts and resources. Visions and Objectives were clarified to set the strategic direction of Cardinal Newman for the next five years. After hosting listening sessions to solicit additional constituent feedback, the goals and objectives of the strategic plan were finalized and ratified by the Board of Trustees at their November 2022 meeting.
The following objectives were quickly addressed in the spring of 2023:
• The teacher pay scale was raised to the minimum 95% parity with Santa Rosa City Schools
• A process was created to utilize veteran teachers for on boarding, inculturation, and mentoring of new teachers
• Cardinal Newman’s curriculum was further clarified and unified through curriculum mapping
• A feasibility study was conducted to explore the possibility of another capital campaign for the final phase of our campus rebuild
• Disaster recovery funding was identified and secured to enhance and repair older facilities
We now look towards the full implementation of the plan that envisions Cardinal Newman’s future and that the Holy Spirit, who has overseen this good work, brings it to completion.
Each year our school community gathers at the start of the new school year to sip great wines, taste new beers from local breweries and reconnect with alums and school families at our annual Fun In The Fall Polenta Feed. We are grateful to our local and family owned wineries and breweries who gather on campus to share the best of their collections. The wine and beer tasting portion of this event is a huge hit! Our families are treated to a wonderful Polenta Dinner and local desserts before testing their luck on the Wine Raffle generously supported by our families and alums. All proceeds from this event support Tuition Assistance for our alum families who now have their children attending Cardinal Newman.
On Friday, January 27, CNHS celebrated the groundbreaking of our chapel on the Feast Day of Saint Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursuline Order. The ceremony was led by students who set a tone of gratitude and renewal, thanking all those who made this moment possible and reflecting on the opportunity to rebuild all that was lost. Our students see the new chapel as a symbol of the unification of school life and faith, and as a symbol of resilience after the fires and a sacred place of worship.
The spirit of aloha was in the air at our Spring Legacy Gala! Every attendee at this sold-out event was “on theme,” with bright tropical colors and laid-back island style. As they walked through the doors they were greeted with Hawaiian music, gorgeous decor, and a lively silent auction. We also celebrated a huge milestone, Graham Rutherford’s 40th year at Cardinal Newman. We were lucky enough to have three generations of Cardinal Newman principals in attendance to help mark the occasion, Dennis Crandall, Graham, and Nicholas Reynolds.
Through our live and silent auctions, and an exciting paddle raise, our Cardinal Community showed their support, with an end total of $150,130 raised for Cardinal Newman.
Touching Hearts, Changing Lives - Supporting our CN Families through Tuition Assistance
Thanks to the generosity of our community we have received $377,432 in funds for our Fund A Future Tuition Program! Thank you for making a difference for our Newman families!
On Thursday, June 8th, the Alum Golf Tournament played out in the fun and sun. Highlights of the day included 124 golfers touring the links with special themed holes of play. This tournament raises funds for the Alumni Scholarship program, supporting CN graduates’ children and grandchildren. Each year, we award scholarships to deserving students who would not have had access to a Cardinal Newman education without our help.

Friday, October 9th, is a significant day for Cardinal Newman, as it commemorates both the Feast Day of our patron saint John Henry Newman, and the Day of Remembrance of the fire that devastated a large part of our school campus.
On this day, our alumni, faculty and staff, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends come together and show their support for the next generation of changemakers by making a gift.

NEWMAN STRONG, YEAR OVER YEAR
CNHS aims to maintain the utmost level of fiscal responsibility and stewardship of its funds. The school’s financial accounting and control systems are audited annually by an independent CPA firm that is engaged and overseen by the school administration and the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees. Annual spending is governed through an annual budget and policies approved by the Finance Committee and the Board.
