Dear Cardinal Newman Community,
“Give, and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.”

This fall, we welcomed Father Christopher Girolo as our new Chaplain. A long-time parishioner of St. Vincent’s and alumnus of its parish schools, Father Girolo was recently ordained at St. Eugene’s Cathedral by Bishop Vasa. His deep connection to Cardinal Newman runs throughout his history with us—he previously taught Theology at Newman, and during his own student years, he was taught by both Principal Nicholas Reynolds and Mrs. Rodnick. His sister, Natalia, is an alumae of the Class of 2021.
Reflecting on Father Girolo’s journey, Father Bill Donahue of St. Vincent’s Parish shared that Fr. Girolo’s calling emerged early: “Even when he was in religious education here, his teachers all knew it.” This profound commitment to his vocation, nurtured since age five, is a gift to our school community.
“To all who pass through the gates of our campus, it is my earnest hope that you will find here a place to safely explore the Catholic Christian Faith. It is my hope that you will find a place of prayer, security, and stability, rooted in that ‘beauty ever ancient, ever new’ (St. Augustine) which comes from the cross and shines forth through the Church.”
As he concludes with his cherished phrase, Ave crux, spes unica!—“Hail the cross, our only hope!”—we are reminded of the steadfast foundation of faith he brings to Cardinal Newman.
In his own words, Father Girolo expresses his hopes for our campus:
Father Girolo quickly became a vital presence in our community, supporting Bishop Vasa in the Newman Chapel dedication, leading Mass, offering confession, and celebrating our school-wide liturgies. His spiritual leadership and joyful presence on campus are a blessing to us all.
We are sending our best wishes to Father Plass, who has embarked on a new adventure as chaplain for two parishes: St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Occidental and St. Teresa of Avila Mission in Bodega.
Thank you, Father Plass, for your service to the Cardinal Newman community—students, families, faculty, and staff—in this joint undertaking of moving from shadows and images to the clear light of truth.
ON OCTOBER 9, 2024, THE NEWMAN COMMUNITY GATHERED TO CELEBRATE THE FEAST DAY OF OUR PATRON SAINT, MARKING OUR 60TH ANNIVERSARY AND OUR SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE WIN AS “BEST PRIVATE SCHOOL IN SONOMA COUNTY.
In September 1964, several priests of the Society of the Precious Blood gathered with a small group of 9th-grade boys on the campus of Ursuline High School—an all-girls institution—to launch what would become Cardinal Newman High School. Initially a modest endeavor, the school began as an all-boys institution, opening the following year with two classroom wings, a library with art rooms, a gym, and an administration building. Over time, the partnership between Ursuline and Cardinal Newman deepened, with shared classes, social events, dances, and even a combined yearbook and graduation ceremony. Although Ursuline High School closed its doors in 2011, its legacy lives on through the countless young women who became an integral part of the Cardinal Newman family.
As we celebrate 60 years of Cardinal Newman High School, we honor the Ursuline Sisters, who provided Catholic education in Santa Rosa from 1880 to 2011, and we express deep gratitude for the long-standing partnership with Ursuline High School. Together, they forged a legacy that shaped generations of students, instilling in them a strong sense of faith, purpose, and community.
Today, that legacy continues to thrive. Cardinal Newman remains dedicated to fostering academic excellence, personal growth, and a deep-rooted faith life. This commitment was recently affirmed when the school earned its 7th consecutive win as the Press Democrat’s “Best Private School in Sonoma County” in the Readers’ Choice Awards.
This honor, accepted by Principal Nicholas Reynolds and Vice Principal of Academics Dr. Maryanne Berry, serves as a testament to the school’s enduring influence and its role as a leading private institution in Sonoma County—a fitting recognition during this milestone anniversary year.
Reflecting on the award, President Dr. Linda Norman remarked, “These awards highlight the exceptional work of the students, faculty, staff, coaches, alumni, and families who make up the Cardinal Newman community and underscore our school’s positive impact
within Sonoma County. And it means even more knowing that it was voted on by the very community we serve.”
While awards are a prestigious acknowledgment, the true measure of Cardinal Newman’s success is found in the accomplishments of its alumni. The values instilled during their time at the school continue to shape their lives long after graduation. We take great pride in celebrating their achievements and contributions, knowing their stories will inspire future generations of Cardinals.

JUNE 26, 2024
We extend our deepest gratitude to the generous donors whose support has made the construction of our St. John Henry Newman chapel possible. Your contributions have provided a sanctuary for our students, staff, and alumni—a place to nourish faith and foster unity. The St. John Henry Newman Chapel now stands as a testament to our community’s enduring commitment to faith and dedication. More than a building, it serves as the heart of our campus, offering a peaceful space for prayer, reflection, and gathering. This chapel will be a cornerstone of our spiritual life, hosting Mass, religious celebrations, and memorable ceremonies for generations to come.
On June 26, 2024, Bishop Vasa presided over the dedication of the chapel. One attendee recalled, “Like many present that day, it was my first experience of a chapel dedication ceremony. As the service was set to begin, I entered the dimly lit chapel and marveled at the meticulous craftsmanship that shaped this inspiring space. While I didn’t know what to expect, Bishop Vasa and his co-celebrants guided us with grace through the beautiful traditions. The ceremony engaged all our senses— we heard Bishop Vasa’s words on the
chapel’s significance to our students, breathed in the incense that filled the air, and watched as light from candles and chandeliers illuminated the space, bringing it to life. It was a powerful moment—a beautiful beginning shared with our community.”
In the few short months since its dedication, our chapel has blossomed into a cherished gathering space for important occasions and moments of quiet reflection. Each morning, students and faculty are invited to join Fr. Girolo for daily Mass, beginning each day with prayer and reflection. Recently, we celebrated Fr. Alvin Villaruel’s 30th anniversary in the priesthood and his 16 years of service to Cardinal Newman—a
joyful Mass followed by a lively reception with friends and family in the ACC. The chapel has also been home to deeply personal celebrations, such as the LeFort family’s Quinceañera Mass for their daughter, Yanliet, ‘28, and this year’s Diocesan Congress began with a moving Mass in the chapel, blessing the campus for the days ahead.
Looking toward the future, we anticipate countless more occasions where our chapel will bring the community together in faith and celebration. This sacred space promises to witness milestone moments, inspiring our Cardinal Newman family and nurturing the spirit of faith that will carry us forward for generations.
“The ceremony engaged all our senses—we heard Bishop Vasa’s words on the chapel’s significance to our students, breathed in the incense that filled the air, and watched as light from candles and chandeliers illuminated the space, bringing it to life. It was a powerful moment—a beautiful beginning shared with our community.”

Cardinal Newman High School is breaking new ground with its Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter and MAKER programs, blending hands-on agricultural education with creative, technology-driven learning. Together, these programs equip students with essential skills in leadership, sustainability, and innovation, preparing them for diverse careers from agriculture to engineering.
Launched in 2022, the FFA chapter has grown quickly, tripling its membership in just three years. Under the passionate guidance of science teacher Felicia Lukins, the program has developed a comprehensive Agriscience pathway that students can follow from freshman year through graduation. With courses like AP Environmental Science, Chemistry and Agriscience, and Biology and Sustainable Agriculture, students gain practical experience in crop cultivation, livestock care, and sustainable practices. The FFA chapter connects students to the natural world while building community involvement and leadership skills. This past spring, FFA members attended the California State FFA Leadership Conference, where they officially received their chapter charter marking a proud milestone for Cardinal Newman’s commitment to agricultural education.

FFA AND MAKER PROGRAMS BREAK NEW GROUND
Newman’s new Innovation Center, led by Director Jason Farthing, brings art and technology together in inventive, hands-on projects.
On any given day, you might hear ping-pong balls bouncing as engineering students test paddle designs, or spot students building a rat trap-powered race car or reverse-engineering a game controller.
Introduced in Fall 2024, the Maker Workshop courses bridge art and technology, integrating STEAM education and 21st-century skills through engaging, project-based learning. Students work with tools like 3D printers, electronics, and woodworking equipment to bring their ideas to life. Projects range from lithophane portraits and cityscape models to Advent Prayer boxes for Campus Ministry, equipping students with technical skills and a sense of achievement.
The Innovation Center also fosters collaboration across disciplines, with projects spanning Spanish, dance, physics, art, and more. Students have created projects like Día de los Muertos piñatas, self-portrait masks in Freshman Art, and stained glass installations made by the entire sophomore class.
These cross-disciplinary initiatives inspire creative problem-solving and critical thinking, making this space accessible and relevant to every student on campus.
Through these programs, Cardinal Newman is creating a vision for holistic education that cultivates critical think-
ing, sustainability awareness, and innovative problem-solving. By bridging traditional academics and hands-on experience, Cardinal Newman High School is preparing students to address the complex challenges of tomorrow.
STUDENTS EXPLORE LITERATURE THROUGH A CREATIVE COURTROOM EXPERIENCE
Ms. Heather Wilson’s junior American Literature class read Flight by Sherman Alexie, followed by an engaging and immersive mock trial based on the novel’s characters. Flight tells the story of Zits, a young Native American teenager in foster care who “time travels” through different historical periods, confronting the struggles of Native Americans throughout U.S. history. With each journey, Zits embodies a different character and faces moral dilemmas—ultimately finding himself entangled with the law.
murder and challenging the students to determine whether Zits was guilty based on textual evidence from the novel. In the mock trial, students took on the roles of judges, defense and prosecution attorneys, jurors, and court reporters, applying their critical thinking skills to argue their cases.
This fall, our current junior class is diving into preparations for a “mock trial,” guided once again by the invaluable expertise of Ms. Rodriguez and Mr. Woods, two dedicated legal professionals. Their return to Cardinal Newman offers our students the opportunity to learn the art of building and defending a case with real-world insight.
To deepen their understanding of characterization and explore the themes of the novel, Ms. Wilson invited members of the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office, and criminal defense attorney Martin Woods (parent of Aiden Woods, ‘25) to speak with students. They discussed the roles of judges, jurors, and attorneys in real-world criminal cases, preparing the class to conduct their own in-class “trial.”
Sonoma County District Attorney Carla Rodriguez–parent of Logan (‘25), and Luka (‘27), played a key role in this unique lesson, explaining the elements of
Thank you to Ms. Rodriguez and Mr. Woods for sharing essential strategies on case-building—skills that are vital not only in the courtroom but also for persuasive writing across many fields.
It’s initiatives like these that distinguish Cardinal Newman High School. By examining a fictional work through the lens of the legal system, students not only enhanced their understanding of the novel but also gained practical insights into criminal justice. The experience allowed them to sharpen their public speaking skills, collaborate in a real-world scenario, and engage deeply with the text—all while having fun in the process.

ART COMES ALIVE AT CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL!
Art truly flourishes at Cardinal Newman High School, where our Art Program nurtures and inspires students to explore their creative talents in visual arts, music, performing arts, and dance. Every artistic pathway encourages students to develop critical skills that shape their future success while enriching the daily life of our campus.
“Each of these pathways fuels creativity and expression,” shares dance teacher and Arts Director Gabrielle Thompson. “These are critical skills for our students as we prepare them for the world beyond Newman. But while they’re here, this beautiful environment transforms our community, changing what we look at, how we feel, and what we hear.”
The arts are woven deeply into the fabric of Cardinal Newman, shaping our school culture and bringing a unique vibrancy to campus. Our hallways are alive with color, as murals crafted by student artists decorate our walls, sharing their vision and skill with future generations. Music spills into corridors, and students in the performing arts program build
confidence and creativity as they practice public speaking and storytelling. In the Innovation Center, young artists bring their ideas to life, using creative problem-solving and design skills to tackle real-world challenges.
The year opened with a stunning visual arts gallery exhibit, and our Arts Alive Celebration brought the
entire community together to recognize our remarkable student artists. The Modern Rock Band infused energy into events throughout the year, from sold-out shows at HopMonk Sebastopol to uplifting performances at Newman gatherings like the Alumni Homecoming BBQ, Admissions Preview Day, and Day on the Green. The band’s playful lip-dub videos engaged the whole school.
Arts students have left their mark with award-winning posters, event media, and captivating film trailers starring their classmates.
These talented students even designed logos for our Arts Alive program, showcasing the range and depth of artistic skill they bring to our school. (Continued on page 24)
Our Dance Program delivered two unforgettable shows: “Curtain Call” in the fall, which brought Broadway’s best to life with dynamic choreography and exuberance, and “Kaleidoscope” in the spring, a powerful exploration of complex emotions and themes.
The arts are alive at CNHS, fostering a spirit of creativity, joy, and community in every performance and project.
We are incredibly proud of our students and the vibrant culture they bring to life here at Cardinal Newman.
The Arts are alive and thriving at CNHS!
In the Spring, our Arts Alive celebration showcased the vibrant creativity of our students. The festivities began with a captivating gallery exhibit from our talented visual artists, setting the stage for our inaugural Arts Alive Celebration, where we honored exceptional student artists. Congratulations to all who contributed to this inspiring event!
Many thanks to our 23-24 Arts Team: Gabrielle Thompson, Director of the Arts Alive program, and our Arts team: Morris Acevedo, Joey Castor, Jason Farthing, Zachary Hasbany, and Garrick Maul. In the 2024-2025 school year, we have welcomed back Ms. Atalie Halpin to the Arts team, and though Mr. Maul has retired, we are fortunate enough to see him on campus from from time to time as a substitute.
Adam Holmes, ‘26, has a wide range of interests—from water polo and swimming to digital media, chemistry, video editing, and graphic design.
In the Fall of 2023, he channeled his creativity into designing the new Arts Alive logo. Driven by a passion for graphic design and video editing, Adam used this project as a platform for artistic expression, despite his initial plans to pursue business school rather than a design career. Now, he envisions blending his creative skills with his future brand.
Adam’s design process for the Arts Alive logo was impressive. He explored 20 different variations and 10 color schemes, showcasing versatility and commitment to excellence. This method of creating multiple versions of one concept is valuable in any career that involves pitching ideas or crafting proposals. His journey with
Adobe Illustrator is another testament to his dedication; Adam mastered the program independently—a notable achievement for anyone familiar with its complexity!
Now, Adam’s work can be seen across Newman—on event posters, banners, digital signage, and an extra large mural near the Student Life Center.
The creative process for the Arts Alive logo involved extensive experimentation, resulting in 20 different variations and 10 color schemes.

EACH YEAR, RETREATS PLAY A TRANSFORMATIVE ROLE IN THE SPIRITUAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT OF OUR
Grade-level retreats are an integral part of the spiritual and personal development of our students, as they provide an opportunity to step away from the busyness of everyday life and focus on what truly matters: their relationships with God, their friends and families, and themselves.
Throughout the year, students are invited to explore their faith and relationships more deeply, engage in meaningful discussions, and reflect on their own journeys in a setting that encourages openness, encouragement, and connection.
For our upperclassmen, the retreat experience takes on an even deeper significance as they embark on overnight getaways that offer a rare chance to truly disconnect from the distractions of the outside world, including their phones. In the serene setting of nature, students are encouraged to pause, reflect, and deepen their connection with their spirituality on a more profound level.
The importance of Newman’s retreat program lies in the profound bonds it helps to create and strengthen. Through group activities, personal reflection, and shared prayer, students build a sense of community that transcends the ordinary. Friendships are deepened, preconceptions are broken down, and students often leave with a greater sense of unity and self-understanding. Students and faculty retreat leaders play a critical role in guiding these experiences, sharing their wisdom and testimonies, and creating a supportive environment where students can grow.
Cardinal Newman is a place where faith flourishes—in our hearts, our halls, and every moment in between.
Our retreats also provide a unique opportunity to bond with peers and teachers through shared experiences, both spiritual and recreational. Outdoor activities like zip-lining, a giant swing called “The Goliath,” and team-building challenges foster a sense of unity and trust among the students, while evenings spent in conversation or quiet reflection deepen their relationships. In this sacred space, far from the demands of daily life, upperclassmen find the time and support to strengthen their faith, deepen friendships, and gain a renewed sense of purpose as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives. The connections made during these retreats—both spiritual and relational—leave a lasting imprint, fostering a stronger, more compassionate, and faith-filled community that extends beyond the walls of the school.
“I felt a lot more connected to my community and my faith.”
-Ella Travena, ‘26
“I loved being able to bond with my classmates and teachers. It was so much fun! Especially seeing Mrs. Rodnick on the zip line!”
-Lala Luci, ‘26
Spirituality isn’t just something taught in the classroom—it is woven into daily life. It is an active journey of faith that shapes our students’ experiences, creating opportunities for them to truly live their faith, not just learn about it.”
–Marie Rodnick, Theology Teacher and Campus Ministry Director
Faith has always been at the heart of campus life and continues to flourish through the leadership of Campus Ministry, whose hard work brings depth and meaning to our community.
Weekly faculty and staff prayer meetings, school-wide events, and the opening of our beautiful new chapel further strengthen this shared commitment.
In the 2024-2025 School year, our grade-level Retreats Program is led by Mrs. Marie Rodnick, our Campus Ministry Coordinator, with support from Mr. Marty Argenti, Father Girolo, the Campus Ministry Club, and the many members of our faculty and staff who take time away from family and work to retreat with our students.
We are especially grateful to Father Plass and former retreat leaders for building a strong foundation that continues to inspire and guide us today.
On June 1st, 2024, 125 proud Cardinals crossed the stage at commencement before taking their next steps out in the world as graduates.
Even the wind was in high spirits during the ceremony as our Seniors celebrated the end of their high school journey and the beginning of the next chapter.
The Class of 2024 earned over $12.3 million in scholarships and received numerous college acceptances—a true reflection of their hard work. They are attending four-year universities, out-of-state schools, community colleges and military academies, or beginning internships and entering the work force.
Though they may be following different paths, they all
share one thing in common: a commitment to pursuing their dreams and making a positive impact on the world.
It is remarkable to note that Hannah Bickel, Grace Hiserote, Theo Ranney, and Konnor Rodnick shared the distinguished honor of Valedictorian, exemplifying the commitment to excellence that defines our Cardinal Newman community.
The core of Cardinal Newman High School is our commitment to educating students in the wholeness of body, mind, and soul, and this moment is a testament to that mission. We are grateful to our faculty, staff, and families for their support in guiding these students. Your partnership is powerful.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024—we can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!
Here are some final reflections from the Valedictorians of the Class of 2024:
“Throughout the past four years, we have faced many challenges, both academic and personal but it was our faith that always kept moving us forward towards this moment. This faith became our light, guiding us in our darkest times. It united us, give us hope, and has inspired us to always strive for greatness. As we sit here today, ready to embark on our new journeys, it is this hope we will carry with us out into the world.”
-Konnor Rodnick
“Now is the time to replace the fear of the unknown with the curiosity to try new things. Now we have the freedom to figure out what we like and what we don’t. So take what you have learned at Cardinal
Newman, the people you’ve met, and the connections you’ve made, and remember to let life in and not go around, but through.”
-Grace Hiserote
“To our teachers, staff and faculty: you have taught us more than we, or at least I, could have ever imagined. Not just about academics, you have taught us about life, service, faith and what it means to be a truly good person. Newman is a unique
environment for learning, in its enrichment of not only the mind and body, but the soul, and all of you have embodied that environment. For that, we thank you.”
-Theo Ranney
“After four years here, I think I truly understand Cardinal Newman’s mission of growing students’ bodies, minds, and souls and how it is all connected. So I will leave you with this Our bodies may be physically present here
tonight and stepping into a new chapter in our lives, but we need to have our minds focused on the present moment and enjoying our youth while we still have it. With these two aligned, we can truly grow our souls. As a class, our souls grow together and form an inseparable bond. As a person, our souls grow from joy and rise closer to God. “
- Hannah Bickel
“Now is the time to replace the fear of the unknown with the curiosity to try new things.”
-Grace Hiserote, ‘24
Congratulations to Brianna Morotto, ‘24, and Eshaan Badhan, ‘24 who were each awarded the prestigious $180,000 NROTC Scholarship in the Spring. Brianna, recognized as the top female candidate in the Western United States, was surprised by members of the United States Marine Corps, celebrating her academic achievements, character, and physical fitness. Eshaan, dressed in festive pajamas for Spirit Week, received his life-changing news during his first-period class, greeted by family, school administrators, and Marine representatives bearing a larger-than-life check. This incredibly competitive scholarship, awarded through a rigorous national selection process, covers full tuition, books, fees, and additional financial benefits, paving the way for their futures at esteemed colleges nationwide.
Your Newman family is beyond proud—congratulations, Brianna and Eshaan, on this unforgettable achievement!

A Year of Unmatched Athletic Achievements
The 2023-2024 academic year was an extraordinary one for Cardinal Newman Athletics, filled with remarkable accomplishments that reflect the perseverance, dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship of our scholar-athletes. Each day, they continue to inspire us with their commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
Our success wouldn’t be possible without the incredible efforts of our coaches, assistant coaches, athletic trainers, support staff, and parent volunteers. Their support plays an invaluable role in shaping our athletes and ensuring the success of our programs.
Among our many achievements, we are particularly proud to recognize Varsity Baseball Head Coach Derek DeBenedetti (CN Class of ‘94), who was named “Best High School Coach” for the second consecutive year. Ella Foley, ‘26, Named Press Democrat’s Female Golfer of the Year
Ella Foley, CN Class of 2026, was named the NBL-Oak Golfer of the Year, and, like her former teammate Gabby Sinatra last year, she was also named as The Press Democrat’s Girls Golfer of the Year for 2023.
With a 41.6 scoring average while playing at some of the area’s most difficult courses. Ella lead the Cardinals with a 77 at the NCS Division 2 championships.
Ella led the NCS Division 2 tournament, and was top-10 overall in the NCS Division 1 Championships, where she ended her season the best score among local golfers.
As a team, the Cardinals were undefeated in league, and finished in second place at the NCS Division 2 championships. Ella joins a legacy of top golfers at CN, including Gabby Sinatra,‘23 and Lillie Dayton, ‘23.
Zack Homan, ‘24 Named Press Democrat All-Star Player of the Year
Entering the 2023 season, Senior Zack Homan was primarily known for his robust defense as a linebacker for the Cardinals. Despite his established defensive prowess, the team’s lineup shifts unexpectedly positioned him as the starting running back—a role he not only
took on but excelled in spectacularly.
Zach’s transition to offense proved historic, as he delivered one of the most remarkable seasons for a running back in both Sonoma County and Cardinal Newman’s storied history. His phenomenal performance earned him the prestigious title of 2023 Press Democrat All Star Player of the Year in prep football.
Building on this incredible achievement, Zack is continuing his athletic and academic career at San Jose State University.
In fall 2023, CN’s newly formed Women’s Flag Football team kicked off their inaugural season with a strong start, facing off against their first openents at the end of September.
The establishment of the Flag Football team has further expanded the already robust roster of sports offerings at Newman, and provided the opportunity for our female athletes to put their strength, endurance, and teamwork to the test on a new field of play.
Under the guidance of head coach Tino Retamoza, these players had a stellar season, going 6-2. This kind of season record for the newbie squad really highlights the skill and athleticism
of the our female athletes, and lays a promising foundation for the future of Women’s Flag Football at Newman. “The first season of girls flag blew my expectations away. Starting our season off with a 24-2 blowout win over Casa Grande in front of a huge crowd at Cardinal Newman High School, there was definitely a buzz in the air.
Led by Seniors Sofia Lightner and Talia Woods, the girls showed up always ready to compete. With sophomores Bella D’Amico, Juliet Diehl, Hannah Maida, and Gianna Teldeschi making huge contributions this year, I can’t wait to see what next year brings for Cardinal Newman girls flag!”
- Head Coach Tino Retamoza
Women’s Flag Football is now finishing their second season, and dominating their league once again.
Varsity Baseball Head Coach Derek DeBenedetti, ‘94 wins “Best High School Coach in Sonoma County” for the Second Year in a Row!
Cardinal Newman’s Varsity Baseball Head Coach, Derek DeBenedetti (CN Class of ‘94), was honored as the Press Democrat’s “Best High School Coach” for the second consecutive year.
His dedication, expertise, and ability to inspire his players have undoubtedly contributed to his team’s strong bond and their athletic success as they became NCS Champions in 2022, 2023, and 2024, culminating in the School’s first CIF NorCal Championship in 2024.
What a feeling! Congrats to powerhouse Kate Schat, ‘25, for hitting 1k career points!
Just another day for Kate Schat, ‘25, who was named Press Democrat “Player of the Year” for 2024!
“The junior guard helped lead the Cardinals to the first North Coast Section Open Division title in program history.”
-Press Democrat
This fall, Kate committed to Santa Clara University. We can’t wait to follow her journey after graduation!
‘In awe of the moment’: Cardinal Newman, Ukiah shine at Oracle Park.
Last spring, our Newman Varsity Baseball team got the full major league experience when they played against the Ukiah Wildcats at Oracle Park. From warming up in the outfield bullpens to hearing their names announced over the loudspeakers, it was a once in a lifetime experience.
The team clinched the North Bay League Oak division title with a 2-0 win over Ukiah High School with a score of 2-0. Congratulations to all of our players!
Our Press Democrat All-Star Athlete of the Year nominees for 2023-24: Abella Hunter and Zack Homan, and for the All-Star Scholar Athlete of the Year: Natalie Farquhar and Santiago Adan.
Of the more than 60 local student-athletes nominated, eight were selected to receive scholarships from The Press Democrat. Congratulations to Natalie and Zack, who were the winners in their respective categories.
Wednesday, October 9th is a significant day for the Cardinal Newman community, as it commemorates both the Feast Day of our patron saint John Henry Newman, and the Day of Remembrance of the fire that devastated a large part of our school campus. It’s a significant day for our community and a reminder of the strength and perseverance that define all of us at Newman.
As part of our Annual Fund Program, our Day of Giving helps support the operating budget for the school. As you are aware, our annual tuition rate does not cover the full cost of education. With only 85% of the cost of education covered
by tuition payments, we fundraise the additional 15% through important programs like our Annual Fund Day of Giving.
With the incredible support of our Cardinal Community, our Day of Giving Campaign raised over $243,000
However, our Annual goal is even more ambitious. Cardinal Newman aims to reach a $1.4 million target for its Annual Fund by June 30th, calling upon the support and spirit of its community once again.
Thank you for leading the way!
With heartfelt gifts from our families, alumni, Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff, we raised over $243,000 during our annual Day of Giving on October 9, 2024. Thank you for your incredible support!

In the spirit of Cor ad
from our hearts to yours –Thank You!
Our St. John Henry Newman Day, which coincided with Day of Giving was a beautiful celebration of community spirit!
We began with a heartfelt Mass attended by families, alumni, and friends, followed by an all-school photo in the stadium, where we cheered on our faculty in an energetic game of wiffleball.
The day also featured a special recognition of Coach DeBenedetti, honored for the second consecutive year as the Press Democrat’s “Best High School Coach in Sonoma County.”
It was a day filled with laughter (and a little friendly competition), joy, and camaraderie. These moments create priceless memories that our community will cherish for years to come.
Thank you to all who joined us at our Annual Spring Legacy Gala!
This unforgettable, ‘60s-inspired evening was filled with unity, generosity, and an outpouring of support for the Arts at Newman.
Thanks to your enthusiasm and the iconic Newman spirit, we raised over $180,000—including a remarkable $36,500 during the final Paddle Raise—to support Arts and Innovation at Cardinal Newman.
Whether you attended, donated, or lent a helping hand, your commitment to our students’ growth means the world.
Thank you for helping us make a difference!
At our Legacy Gala, we proudly presented Martin and Patricia McCormick with the 2024 John Henry Newman Award. Their dedication to Cardinal Newman and Ursuline High Schools over 25 years has deeply influenced Catholic education in the Diocese of Santa Rosa. Their service, leadership, and generous support have been pivotal to our mission and community, embodying the spirit of our school’s namesakes.
Thank you, and heartfelt congratulations to Martin and Patricia for their commitment, and for setting a wonderful example for us all.
Their contributions have significantly shaped the future of Cardinal Newman.

Our Annual Fun in the Fall event took on a fresh and festive twist this year, merging seamlessly with our Alumni Tailgate before the big Homecoming game. The night was everything we’d hoped for—highlighted by our Cardinal football team’s victory over Rancho Cotate!
From alumni reliving cherished memories to families embracing the Newman spirit, the evening was one for the books. The Fun in the Fall: Wine & Beer Tasting and Homecoming Huddle transformed the Student Life
Center into a warm, autumn-inspired gathering for families, alumni, and friends. Guests savored a delightful selection of wines from local wineries, paired perfectly with wood-fired pizzas and appetizers hosted by Park Avenue Catering.
Yet, the heart of the evening was in the connections that make Newman events unforgettable and our community so special.
A huge thank you goes out to our incredible winery and brewery partners for their support, and to Park Avenue Catering for delivering a true touchdown with their delicious spread.
We couldn’t have asked for a better crowd and can’t wait to celebrate with you again soon!
CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL’S FIRST GRADUATING CLASS
We honor the pioneering Class of 1968. These students, the first to step onto campus in 1964, laid the foundation for our school’s rich legacy.
In honor of Cardinal Newman’s 60th anniversary, we celebrate the pioneering Class of 1968. These students, the first to walk onto our campus in 1964, laid the foundation for a legacy that has grown alongside our sister school, Ursuline High School.
Over their four transformative years, the Class of 1968 watched the campus come to life, with new spaces for administration, a library, a gymnasium, and classrooms taking shape. Sixty years later, the Class of 2024 experienced their own era of campus evolution, with the addition of new classroom buildings, a Chapel, and a state-of-the-art center for collaboration and innovation. But, as their yearbook reflects, the most meaningful growth happened within the students themselves. They embodied St. John Henry Newman’s vision of education, which cultivates the mind, body, and spirit, setting a high standard of academic excellence, athletic strength, artistic talent, and school spirit—a tradition that continues to inspire across generations.
The 1968 yearbook captures the roots of cherished traditions: school-wide Mass, Spirit Week, the Junior Ring Ceremony, the annual Student-Faculty basketball game, and collaborative events with Ursuline, like the joint school play, The Imaginary Invalid, and the “Spanish Harlem” themed prom, reflect the community spirit of the time and a shared history that shaped the heart of both schools.
This pioneering class, alongside Ursuline, not only helped shape Cardinal Newman’s campus but also laid the groundwork for a partnership that remains woven into our community. As we explore the 20232024 yearbook, we are proud to recognize numerous CNHS and UHS alumni among our faculty, staff, and parent community.
Today, the legacy of Cardinal Newman and Ursuline High Schools endure—a testament to the beginnings, traditions, and united spirit of both schools.
Stephen Hansel, CNHS Yearbook, 1968
“Cardinal Newman was a close-knit family then and continues to this day.
Many of my friends to this day were fellow CN students; relationships that started over 56 years ago are still going strong.”
In 1968, Stephen Hansel joined the ranks of Cardinal Newman High School’s first graduating class. Hansel, whose legacy continues at the school through his grand-nephew Brody (‘26) and grand-nieces Maguire (Class of ‘23) and Hayden (‘24), recalls the school’s humble beginnings with fondness and nostalgia.
When Cardinal Newman opened in 1964, classes were held in the “Ursuline Quad,” a cluster of classrooms behind the Ursuline gym. The school was staffed by the Order of the Precious Blood—a missionary, not a teaching order—yet the priests and brothers provided a quality education and strong sense of community. Hansel notes that many of his classmates came from nearby Catholic schools like St. Rose and St. Eugene’s, so there was a familiarity among them from day one.
A unique aspect of Hansel’s class was their place as the school’s only class each year until they graduated, making them “seniors” in a sense from their freshman year forward. Hansel’s favorite memories include the camaraderie of an all-boys class, casual lunchtime interactions with Ursuline students across the road, and a memorable “hot dog day” every Friday, as they had no cafeteria and typically brought bagged lunches every day of the week.
Junior year brought excitement with the start of Cardinal Newman’s first football team, coached by Ed Lloyd. The team managed an unexpected win against Clearlake, with coverage from the Press Democrat, and even hosted a post-game celebration after competing with St. Bernard’s of Eureka. Hansel also vividly remembers the 1968 earthquake, which struck during lunch and added to their shared experiences.
Hansel was active in sports and served as the founding editor of The Newmanlite, the school’s newspaper, producing six issues with his journalism teacher, Father Franck, who left a lasting impact on him. After Cardinal Newman, Hansel went on to study at Santa Clara University and later earned his law degree, passing the Bar in 1977. For over three decades, he and his brother ran auto dealerships, and today, Hansel owns Walter Hansel Winery and Walter Hansel Bistro, named in honor of his father.
Reflecting on his time at Cardinal Newman, Hansel notes, “Cardinal Newman was a close-knit family then and continues to this day. Many of my friends to this day were fellow CN students; relationships that started over 56 years ago are still going strong.”
From the Newman Archives: This dedication page from the CNHS 1968 yearbook celebrates our school’s first graduating class.

alumni from across the decades – from the 1960s to the 2010s.
Pat’s incredible 46-year dedication to Cardinal Newman – his students, the school itself, and his fellow faculty – was truly unmatched. While the cool evening fog rolled in, the warmth of love and appreciation filled the air as former classmates reconnected, faces were recognized, and memories were shared.
Pat’s family – Mrs. Schumacher, his brother Michael, his children Michael, Michelle, and Jonathan, and his grandchildren – were all present to hear the heartfelt tributes that honoured his commitment as a teacher and coach.
Their gratitude was evident, and the outpouring of respect will undoubtedly stay with them forever.
As the Cardinal Newman community reflects on the loss of Mr. LaFortune, we are reminded of the profound impact he had on the school.
Pat was more than just a teacher; he was a mentor, a friend, and a source of inspiration to many. Both teachers and students grow and mature as they learn, and in this way, Pat LaFortune became beloved.
His care for students deepened over time, and he demonstrated to other teachers the importance of consistency and support. He was open to trying new techniques and learning from others, even switching from coaching football and baseball to coaching cross country and track to meet student needs. He became a fixture in the lives of his students.
Pat understood that the subjects teachers instruct are simply a means to connect with students; what teachers truly teach are people, not just topics.
His patience and encouragement helped students grow. He never left them behind, but he also held them accountable. This balance defined him, and even after retiring, he continued to support others. He gave of himself, and the community was better for it.
Patrick LaFortune taught at Cardinal Newman High School for 46 years, from 1973 to 2019, making him the school’s longest-serving teacher and coach. He taught Social Studies, Earth Sciences, and Driver’s Education and Training, and he coached cross country and track for 40 years. The school named its track in his honor in 2013, marking his 40th year of teaching. In his early years at the school, Pat also coached football and baseball. He supported Service Learning and was actively involved in the community.
As a long-time football and basketball official, he was highly respected by his fellow coaches.
Pat came to Southern California from Canada as a teenager and was later drafted into the U.S. Army, where he trained as a Combat Medic and served in Vietnam. After returning home, he attended college on the GI Bill and became a teacher, starting his career in Catholic schools before moving to Sonoma County in 1973 to join Cardinal Newman.
Students and fellow teachers deeply respected and loved Pat, making his loss for both the community and his family heartbreaking and irreplaceable. Those who had the privilege of knowing Pat as a colleague and a friend will always cherish his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support.
Established by the LaFortune family, this scholarship will provide ongoing tuition assistance to deserving students for years to come, helping to ensure that Pat’s legacy continues to support future generations.

On August 25th, Father. Alvin Villaruel celebrated his 30th anniversary of ordination with a special Mass in Cardinal Newman High School’s new chapel.
The event drew over a hundred alumni, staff, parents, and students, all gathered to honor his remarkable service and dedication.
Fr. Alvin’s commitment to his parish and school community has left a lasting impact, earning him deep admiration and gratitude from all who know him.
In recognition of his sixteen years as Chaplain, a St. Vincent de Paul stained glass window was dedicated to him by Cynthia Healy, mother of Greg (’13) and Connery (’16) Gschwend. This meaningful tribute was made possible by generous contributions from alumni and their families.
Illuminate Our New Chapel with the St. John Henry Newman Stained Glass Window
Sunlight filters through stained glass, bringing forth timeless images of faith that inspire and illuminate.
This is the gift and opportunity we have as Cardinal Newman alumni to create within our new chapel,
One of the chapel’s prominent windows is dedicated to our patron, St. John Henry Newman, and alumni have the chance to collectively sponsor this window, leaving a lasting legacy alongside seven other sponsored windows— including St. Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursuline order.
The new chapel will welcome not only current students and families but also alumni, offering a sacred space for gatherings, celebrations, and sacramental services that bring us together in faith.
To make this vision a reality, the CN Alumni association is currently collecting contributions toward the window sponsorship. So far, we have received $16,245 of the $25,000 needed, but we need your support to complete the funding.
Every gift, large or small, brings us closer to reaching this goal.
Join us in creating a lasting tribute to our shared legacy. Your contribution, in any amount, will be a meaningful part of this chapel—a place that celebrates our past, present, and future.

Trini Amador ’76 and his wife Lisa, owners of Gracianna Winery on Westside Road, recently celebrated a prestigious honour: their Reserve Pinot Noir took home the Sweepstakes Red Wine award at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair on October 12.
Named after Trini’s grandmother, Gracianna Winery pays homage to her remarkable life, which is beautifully captured in a book available at the winery—a spot well worth a visit and a taste.
Trini and Lisa were overjoyed by this recognition. As Lisa shared, “We are thrilled!” while Trini added his own flair, exclaiming, “MUAH! Very happy about this.”
Their winning wine, described by the judges as “earthy, juicy with notes of
blue fruit and ripe raspberries—very complex,” was chosen Best in Show out of 964 wines.
Last spring, Trini returned to Cardinal Newman as part of the Alumni Speaker Program to discuss marketing with our Design students, offering insights from his journey and success in the wine industry. Gracianna Winery’s dedication to crafting world-class wines for those “who have something to be grateful for” shines through in this exceptional achievement.
