SCOTT PICKLER Head Coach 27th Season San Diego State

ne of the most respected veteran community college coaches in the nation, Scott Pickler had another successful year in 2010 heading to the Super Regionals. Pickler, in his 27th year directing the Chargers, has led Cypress to four state championships (1991, 1994, 1997, 2003) and four runner-up finishes (1996, 1999, 2004, 2007). Pickler, who served as a coach for the 1995 USA Baseball National Trials, has a career winning percentage of .671 (825-4044). He also has coached for nine years in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League. In 2004, 2006, and 2007 he led the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to the Cape Cod League Title. Pickler took over a struggling Cypress program in 1985 and quickly turned the Chargers into a respected California powerhouse. He has been chosen the National Coach of the Year for California Junior Colleges four times. With all of his professional accomplishments, Pickler’s biggest victories and proudest moments come when he sees his athletes move to four-year colleges and universities or the professional ranks. Over 200 student-athletes have received scholarships, and 120 plus players have been

e reached the Super Regionals again in 2010; hopefully we can play one more weekend in 2011. For us to play that extra weekend our youth and inexperience will have to grow up quick. We have a good mix of freshman and sophomores and we feel good about our club regarding work ethic and chemistry. The competition to perform should bring the best out of each player. Coach Cameron was impressed with our Fall saying, “They got after it this Fall and learned to compete.” We will have a couple sophomores that will have to step up and take leadership roles starting with Bryan Aanderud who played a lot for us as a freshman on a sophomore dominated squad. He is a young man who gives us a lot of versatility in the infield, can play some outfield, and hits in the middle of our lineup. Joey Boney will be a key to our success as he will play in the middle of the diamond; hopefully he will live up to the excellence of many former Cypress shortstops. At first base there is a competition between redshirt freshman Jake Clark from Norco high school and Jordan Geiger. Both kids will see time on the mound as well. At second base we feel really good about Robert Chavarria from Marina High School. He is a guy who can really hit, has a very good glove, and makes our lineup better. Chavarria will be pushed by a kid from Cherry Creek High School in Colorado named Max

As it is every year in the Orange Empire Conference, it is going to come down to seeing if our inexperience matures through the ups and the downs that the OEC creates throughout the year. Ultimately it will come down to pitching, defense, and timely hitting. We feel that with the way our players worked this fall and bought in to our system on the field, in the classroom and in the weight room we should be competitive in the prestigious Orange Empire Conference. - Scott Pickler

2010 SEASON REVIEW

he 2010 Chargers had a strong, experienced roster with high hopes for a successful season. After a 22-14 regular season record, Cypress completed a third straight season deep into playoffs in the Super Regionals. Cypress started the season strong in non-conference play. Cypress started with three games at College of the Desert and won two before

losing the third. The Chargers then proceeded to win five straight including a win over Southern Nevada for the first time since 2006. They followed with a ten inning, one-run loss to national powerhouse Chipola. The loss started a three game losing streak before bouncing back just before conference with a 14-1 drubbing of Allan Hancock. The Chargers went on the

road to start Orange Empire Conference action as the defending OEC Champion from 2009. With a target on their backs, the Chargers started conference on a hot streak with five straight wins including a 19-5 rout of rival Santa Ana. The party ended there as Cypress proceeded to suffer four straight close losses in the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worst losing streak of the year. Cypress traveled to Cuesta for

2010 SEASON REVIEW three non-conference games in the team’s annual spring break trip. Cypress returned home with a win over Canyons and losses to Cuesta and Fresno. Cypress continued conference action after the break with spotty results. Cypress earned a streak of four wins before two straight losses to rival and eventual OEC champion Santa Ana. Cypress closed conference with a split against Orange Coast ending conference in third place with a 13-8 record. Cypress was one of four OEC teams to make the playoffs as the Chargers were seeded seventh, just under Golden West. The Chargers hosted 10th seed College of the Desert in the first round. After losing 8-7 to the Roadrunners, Cypress’s backs were against the wall needing to win two straight to survive and advance to the Super Regionals. The Chargers came through eliminating Desert with two straight strong wins punching their ticket to the Super Regionals. The Chargers were one of two OEC teams headed to the Super Regionals heading to headed to fifth

seeded El Camino along with Allan Hancock and Palomar. Cypress opened the tournament with a 5-1 loss to Allan Hancock. Cypress dropped to the elimination bracket and survived with a 6-5 win over Palomar. The Chargers faced off against Allan Hancock in for the fourth time in the season with both teams’ survival on the line. Cypress fell short unable to come back from a seven run deficit losing 7-4 to end the season. Cypress finished the season 25-17 and 13-8 in conference. The 2010 Charger season produced five First Team all-OEC selections and Corey LeVier was named an All-American.

Lucas Castlen Memorial Scholarship

Jonathan Morales and Stephan Kungl have been selected the as the seventh recipients of the Lucas Castlen Memorial Scholarship fund. The scholarship honors the former Charger Lucas Castlen. Castlen died tragically at age 21 in a car accident on June 1, 2002. His namesake scholarship is awarded to a player for his work ethic and desire to commit at a high level at all times. Morales started in all but one game in the shortstop position for the Chargers over his two years at Cypress. He picked up 60 RBI with a career .308 average along the way. Morales moved on to Virginia Tech to play for the Hokies in 2011. Kungl played in 72 games for the Chargers over two years including eight appearances on the mound. He finished with a .340 average and a 3.38 ERA. Kungl moved on to Hofstra to play for the Pride in 2011.

2010 OEC REVIEW

he Orange Empire Conference was again one of the most competitive in the state in 2010 as the OEC finished the regular season second in conference RPI rankings in California slightly below the Big 8. Santa Ana took the conference championship after a three-way tie in 2009. Cypress dropped from their 2009 OEC first place finish to third, a game behind second place Golden West with a 13-8 conference record.

Orange Empire teams made a strong showing in the playoffs as four OEC teams made it to playoffs (Cypress, Santa Ana, Golden West, Orange Coast) and two moved on to Super Regional play (Cypress and Santa Ana). The OEC battled it out in the playoffs but none were able to advance to the State Final Four Tournament. This was the first year since 1992 that the OEC was absent from the Final Four. The OEC has produced 16 State Champions over the past 19 seasons. Cypress, Riverside, and Orange Coast lead the way with four state crowns (Cypress: 1991, 1994, 1997, 2003; Riverside: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007; Orange Coast: 1956, 1960, 1980, 2009) while Santa Ana (1993, 1995, 1996) is right behind them with three. Saddleback captured its first state crown in 2004 by defeating Cypress.

Pickler Joins Angels Development Staff January 18, 2011

Jeff Pickler, a former Cypress Charger, has joined the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Minor League Development staff as the Roving Infield Coordinator. Pickler, an All-American at the University of Tennessee, played at Cypress in 1995 for his father, head coach Scott Pickler. Pickler transitions to the Angels after two years as an Assistant Coach for University of Arizona. Pickler has coached major league players Buster Posey and Gordon Bekham in the prestigious Cape Code league.

After Cypress, Pickler earned All-American and Southeastern Conference Player of the Year awards at University of Tennessee. He was then selected in the 11th round of the 1998 draft by the Brewers winning a Triple-A World Series Championship. He also spent time with the Rangers and the Rockies. He has spent the last couple years working with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an Advance Scout and Staff Consultant. Pickler still holds the Cypress College record for triples in a season (6) and hits in one game (6).

Major League All-Star and Future Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman Retires from the MLB

ypress baseballâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most famous alumnus, Trevor Hoffman, is retiring from the Milwaukee Brewers after 18 years in the MLB. Hoffman leaves Major League Baseball as baseballâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all-time saves leader (601). He came to Cypress in 1985 from local Savanna High School. Hoffman played two years for the Chargers and head coach Scott Pickler for two years before moving on to University of Arizona. Hoffman is retiring with one National League pennant, as a seven-time All-Star, and a two-time Rolaids Relief Man of the Year. Fans of Hoffman now have five years to wait to see if he will receive an invitation to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Hoffman will remain in baseball heading back to the Padres for a position in their front office.

hot streak carried the Chargers to the 2003 State Championship. Cypress won 24 of its last 27 games to complete the 2003 campaign with a 37-14-1 record. After winning the Orange Empire Conference’s top-seed on the final day of the regular season, Cypress went 8-1 in the post-season. fter losing the first game of the state tourney at Cerritos College on Saturday, May 28 to Lassen, 7-1, the Chargers needed four consecutive victories to nail down the state crown. They got them all. On Sunday, Cypress eliminated Chabot in the morning game, 9-4, and then came back to knockout Lassen, 4-2. The Chargers topped defending champion Rancho Santiago in a doubleheader on Monday, May 30 to win the title. The Cypress heroes were

enry has led the Cypress College Physical Education and Athletics department since 1992 as the Department Dean and Athletic Director. Henry began her Cypress College career as the women’s athletic trainer in 1978, becoming the trainer for the school in 1980. During her tenure, Henry has served on numerous boards and committees within the campus. She has a Masters in Education from Azusa Pacific University and a B.A. and M.A. in Physical Education from CSU Long Beach. Phone: 714-484-7355

Sports Information Director - Teresa Wang

ang is in her sixth year as the Charger’s Sports Information Director. She began her stint at Cypress as an assistant for the women’s basketball team where she was part of the 200405 State Championship staff. She has her B.A. from University of California Berkeley in economics, a master’s degree in Sport Management from the University of San Francisco, and a masters in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University. Athletic Trainer - Scott Tucker

ucker is in his 26th year as the head athletic trainer. He is in charge of the health care of all of Cypress’s student athletes. He is known for his commitment to the strength and conditioning of our student athletes and conducts several on going volunteer programs. He is a graduate from the University of Utah, where he also taught athletic training courses as well as first aid/CPR.
