HEAD COACH SCOTT PICKLER San Diego State - 25th Season

ne of the most respected veteran community college coaches in the nation, Scott Pickler had another successful year in 2009 heading to the Super Regionals. Pickler, in his 26th year directing the Chargers, has led Cypress to four state championships (1991, 1994, 1997, 2003) and four runner-up finishes (1996, 1999, 2004, 2007). Pickler, who served as a coach for the 1995 USA Baseball National Trials, has a career winning percentage of .677 (737352-4). He also has coached for eight years in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League. In 2004, 2006, and 2007 he led the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to the Cape Cod League Title. Pickler took over a struggling Cypress program in 1985 and quickly turned the Chargers into a respected California powerhouse. He has been chosen the National Coach of the Year for California Junior Colleges four times. With all of his professional accomplishments, Pickler’s biggest victories

ASSISTANT COACHES Bill Pinkham 25th season University of San Diego

The veteran Cypress assistant is also the collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assistant athletic director starting with the Chargers in 1985. An All-America catcher at the University of San Diego, Pinkham specializes in working with the Charger backstops. Pinkham was a second round draft choice of the Toronto Blue Jays. Pinkham lives in Yorba Linda with his wife Debi. They have four children: Kate, Stephanie, Brett, and Molly.

Larry Mahoney 5th Season Huron University

A State Championship player on the 2003 State Championship Charger squad, Mahoney comes to the Chargers after gaining some experience coaching with Pickler in the Cape Cod Summer League the past two seasons winning the championship in 2004. As a Charger, Mahoney batted .436 during the championship season. After Cypress, Mahoney moved on to the University of South Dakota and then Huron University.

Tony Felicione 1st Season Long Beach State

Felicione is no stranger to community college baseball serving on the staffs of Ohlone (2002-04) and LA Harbor (1993-98). He has earned two state finalist finishes, one with each team, two Super Regional Championships, nine regional championships, and one South Coast Conference Championship. Felicione was a standout for Long Beach State as a 3rd Team All-American and an All Big West selection. 4

Taylor Cameron 1st Season Point Loma Nazarene

Cameron returns to Cypress after playing with the Chargers in 2004. Cameron coached with Scott Pickler as the Pitching Coach for the YD Red Sox in the Cape Cod League. Cameron will serve as the pitching coach for Cypress. After playing one year with the Chargers, Cameron moved on to Point Loma Nazarene where he finished fifth all time in wins and strikeouts. He was drafted in 2007 by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played Independent Baseball in 2008.

enry begins her 17th year as the Dean of Physical Education and eighth year as Athletic Director. Henry began her Cypress College career as the women’s athletic trainer in 1978, becoming the trainer for the school in 1980. During her tenure, Henry has served on numerous boards and committees within the campus. ang is in her fifth year as the Charger’s Sports Information Director. She began her stint as Cypress as an assistant for the women’s basketball team where she was part of the 2004-05 State Championship staff. She has her B.A. from University of California Berkeley in economics, a master’s degree in Sport Management from the University of San Francisco, and a masters in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University. ucker is in his 25th year as the head athletic trainer. He is in charge of the health care of all of Cypress’s student athletes. He is known for his commitment to the strength and conditioning of our student athletes and conducts several on going volunteer programs. He is a graduate from the University of Utah, where he also taught athletic training courses as well as first aid/CPR. We have a large nucleus of experienced sophomores and a good mix of some talented freshmen.â&#x20AC;?

010 looks promising on paper for the Chargers. We have a large nucleus of experienced sophomores and a good mix of some talented freshmen. Around the diamond: Starting on the mound, the Chargers return sophomores Ray Hanson, Tom Hoenshell who returns after a year off from injury, Gabe Garcia, Travis Garrett,signed early with UCI and Matt Rush who got significant innings last year. Vince Payne. Connor Haddock, and Travis Pitcher have been impressive as freshmen on the mound. Offensively, we return shortstop Johnny Morales who signed early with Virginia Tech. He loves to play this game and will get every opportunity to show skills. Our outfield should be a strength and have some depth. Jordan Foreman, Eric Hempe who has committed early to

Central Florida, left-handed Corey Levier, David Silvas and Justin McGuire can all hit and should provide veteran leadership. Three sophomore newcomers who should be run producers and leaders are DC Legg, Ben Waldrip who has signed early with Jacksonville State, and Matt Avery. Dimitri DeLaFuente makes the transition from third base to behind the plate. His ability to lock in for nine innings will be a key to our season. Jake Kungl, who was very good for us as a freshman will be a key for us both defensively and offensively at third base. Key freshmen include Joey Boney at second base and shortstop, Jake Clark at first base,The experience, depth and sophomore leadership should be a plus for the 2010 Chargers as we get ready to battle in the Orange Empire Conference.

Lucas Castlen Memorial Scholarship

Tyler Brady has been selected the sixth recipient of the Lucas Castlen Memorial Scholarship fund. The scholarship honors the former Charger Lucas Castlen. Castlen died tragically at age 21 in a car accident on June 1, 2002. His namesake scholarship is awarded to a player for his work ethic and desire to commit at a high level at all times. Brady, who was born without his left hand, played in 72 games for the Chargers over two years picking up 18 runs scored and making some clutch plays from centerfield. Brady moved on to Oklahoma University to play for the Sooners in 2010.

he Orange Empire Conference was again one of the most competitive in the state in 2009 as the OEC finished the regular season second in conference RPI rankings in California dropping slightly below the Big 8. Cypress, Santa Ana, and Orange Coast ended up in a three-way tie for the conference championship in a top-heavy conference. Cypress improved on their fourth place, 12-9 finish from 2008 with just seven loses. Orange Empire teams made a strong showing in the playoffs as four OEC teams made it to playoffs and all four moved on to Super Regional play (Cypress, Santa Ana, Orange Coast, and Saddleback). The OEC battled it out in Super Regional play and the OEC took both of the spots in the South as Orange Coast and Santa Ana advanced. The Dons were eliminated in the second day but Orange Coast went undefeated in the State tournament on the way to the State Championship, their first. The OEC has produced 13 State Champions over the past 19 seasons. Cypress and Riverside lead the way with four state crowns (Cypress: 1991, 1994, 1997, 2003; Riverside: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007) while Santa Ana (1993, 1995, 1996) is right behind them with three. Saddleback captured its first state crown in 2004 by defeating Cypress and now Orange Coast in 2009.

ypress had a strong start in 2009. After losing the first game, Cypress went on a 6-1 run until losing to Chaffey by one at home. Cypress lost two games at their annual trip to Southern Nevada taking on some tough out-of-state teams like Miami Dade and host Southern Nevada. Cypress returned home to begin Orange Empire Conference Action in what would become one of the most competitive seasons to date. The Chargers started hot winning five straight before losing to Saddleback. Cypressâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s toughest streak was two straight losses to fellow OEC Champs Orange Coast before losing to the other OEC Champ Santa Ana. With just a week left in the regular season, Cypress was two games behind first place. The Chargers had the Conference Mini-Tournament remaining with just three games left. Cypress won two straight defeating Riverside and Fullerton before a dramatic end-of-the-season showdown against rival Santa Ana. Conference drama came down to the final game for Cypress taking on Rival Santa Ana. Cypress pulled through defeating the Dons 6-3 while Orange Coast lost securing their first OEC Championship since 2006. 2009 SEASON REVIEW press hosted 13th seed Allan Hancock in the first round sweeping the Bulldogs handily 10-3 and 11-3 punching their ticket to the Super Regionals. The Chargers headed to second seeded Orange Coast for the Super Regionals along with Mt. San Jacinto and Saddleback. Cypress opened the tournament with a 6-0 shutout win over Mt. San Jacinto. Cypress moved to the

winnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bracket taking on host Orange Coast. The Chargers were overpowered by the Pirates 11-3 forcing Cypress into the loserâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bracket and their second game of the day. Cypress faced Mt. San Jacinto in a rematch with their seasons on the line. In a wild back-and-forth game, Cypress gave up an eighth inning to Mt. San Jac giving them the 10-9 lead. Cypress put

two runners on in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to score losing the game by one and ending their 2009 season. Cypress finished the season 32-16 and 17-7 in conference. The 2009 Charger season produced their first OEC Championship and most wins since 2006.

Pickler Joins San Diego Padres Staff February 1, 2009

Jeff Pickler, a former Cypress Charger, has been named a professional scout for the San Diego Padres. Pickler, an All-American at the University of Tennessee, played at Cypress in 1995 for his father, head coach Scott Pickler. Pickler joins the Padres after a one year stint with University of Arizona as an assistant coach. He has also worked for the Arizona Diamondbacks as an advance scout.

Conference Player of the Year awards at University of Tennessee. He was then selected in the 11th round of the 1998 draft by the Brewers winning a Triple-A World Series Championship. He also spent time with the Rangers and the Rockies. He has spent the last couple years working with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an Advance Scout and Staff Consultant. Pickler still holds the Cypress College record for triples in a season (6).

SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS - 229 players have moved on from Cypress to receive scholarships and play at four-year universities since 1985. - 85% of sophomores have transferred to a four-year University with a Scholarship. - 92% of players from Cypress move on to play at the next level.

Former Charger Ojeda Wins Olympic Bronze Medal

ormer Cypress College shortstop Augie Ojeda was a member of the bronze medal winning United States baseball team at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. Ojeda, who starred at Cypress in 1994 and 1995, saw action in seven of the nine Olympic contests and had an assist on the final out in the 10-3 bronze medal game victory over Nicaragua. A graduate of Downeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pius X High School, Ojeda helped lead Cypress to a state championship in his freshman year with the Chargers. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the State Tournament. In his sophomore year, he earned All-America recognition and then received a scholarship to play for the University of Tennessee. 2003

hot streak carried the Chargers to the 2003 State Championship. Cypress won 24 of its last 27 games to complete the 2003 campaign with a 37-14-1 record. After winning the Orange Empire Conference’s top-seed on the final day of the regular season, Cypress went 8-1 in the post-season. The Chargers were especially impressive in the three state tournament games in Fresno. Cypress opened with a 13-1 victory over Feather River College before routing Saddleback College in a pair of games (16-1, 13-3). In the 13-3 title victory, catcher Felipe Garcia hit two home runs and pitcher Justin Keadle tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts. Tournament Most Valuable Player honors went to Felipe Garcia (8-12, 2HR, 2 doubles, 6 RBIs), Kevin Smith (7-13, 3 doubles, 7 RBIs) and Jason Vargas (1-0, 1.33 ERA, 5-10 batting, 3 RBIs).

ypress won its third state championship of the 1990s with a 7-4 victory over Sacramento City College in the title contest at Fresno City College. Craig Kuzmic, the state’s co-Player of the Year, keyed the Chargers’ 13-hit attack. The sophomore catcher went 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Greg Jacobs, who made the all-state team as a utility player, was 3 for 5. In the semifinals, Cypress also beat

Sacramento, 11-7, as Scott Daeley hit a grand slam home run. The Chargers tied a season high with four home runs in a first round 8-6 win over College of the Sequoias. The Cypress long balls came from Kuzmic, Daeley, Jacobs, and Junior Rodriguez. The Chargers qualified for the state tournament with a 4-3 win over L.A. Harbor in the regional Finals.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

fter losing the first game of the state tourney at Cerritos College on Saturday, May 28 to Lassen, 7-1, the Chargers needed four consecutive victories to nail down the state crown. They got them all. On Sunday, Cypress eliminated Chabot in the morning game, 9-4, and then came back to knockout Lassen, 4-2. The Chargers topped defending champion Rancho Santiago in a doubleheader on Monday, May 30 to win the title. The Cypress heroes were plentiful. Great pitching by starter Rob Crabtree and reliever Andy Gonzales helped the Chargers win the first game in 14 innings, 5-3. Gonzales, who got the victory with six innings of four-hit ball in the opener, came back to start and win the championship game 8-5. Shortstop Augie Ojeda was named MVP on the strength of his tremendous glove work.

he Chargers, after finishing third in the Orange Empire Conference, went on an impressive 8-1 post-season run to capture their first state championship. In the Southern California Regional Championship contest, Jason Bates belted a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat LA Pierce, 5-4, and send the team to the state tournament in Sacramento. Cypress won all three state tourney games by one run. The Chargers beat host Sacramento 4-3 in the opener and topped Chabot by the same score in the semifinals. In the title game, Cypress’ Troy Babbitt hit a walk-off homer in the last of the 11th to beat Sacramento 8-7. The Panthers entered the state competition with just one loss in 52 games. Cypress coach Scott Pickler stated, “We were very focused at the end of the season. We had a lot of big-game players. The bigger the game, the tougher we were.”

CYPRESS COLLEGE Cypress College Established in 1966, Cypress College is a full-service community college offering Associate degrees and certificate programs as well as a place for students to complete their lower division general education before transferring to a four-year institution. The college sits on 110 acres of land and is composed of 12 major instructional buildings which house both traditional classrooms and laboratory facilities for science, art, computer technology, photography, mortuary science and other programs. The college has also grown from an initial enrollment of 1,600 to a current student body in excess of 16,000.
