2010 SEASON PREVIEW It is going to be the heart and competitive drive of our players that is going to make this an exciting year.”

Setting a program record for awards in a single season, we captured our first OEC title and the programs highest finish in the State Championship Tournament. Starting setter Giajaida Vargas said it best during an interview after our semi-finals win at the State Championships, “We’re more of a family than a team. Everyone on the team communicates with each other well.”

O

That team chemistry carried over into our spring training. Dominating in all off-season competition, it was evident that this year’s team has the capacity to do great things again. Experience and team stability are the two cornerstones that we’ve built our 2010 team around. This season, our squad boasts the return of five core sophomores, including the addition of two transfer sophomores, with a team of well seasoned freshman. Coupled with a strong knowledge of the game, the 2010 version of our Cypress College volleyball team should prove to be a force to be reckoned with Setter Giajaida Vargas headlines our 2010 sophomore class as she enters her final season in a Charger uniform. As our most decorated player in a single season, Gia has left her mark in the Charger volleyball record books. As captain of this ship, we will again depend heavily on

After spending the 2009 season defending the back row for us, defensive specialists Catherine Aragon and Rose Greco will be relied upon heavily again this season. Two of our quickest players, they add depth to the accuracy of our passing game which frustrated teams in 2009. year’s team. Ashley Spaulding rounds out our sophomore class after playing her freshman year in 2008 at the College of the Siskiyous in Northern California. As a versatile player capable of filling many positions and our lone left-handed attacker, we will be utilizing her crafty offensive game to our advantage where ever needed. The potential of our freshman class is exciting. Britney Kronberger, Kelsey Mersey, and Alexandria Poloa will be our defense at the net by bringing height to a normally small Cypress team. Instinctive and intimidating blockers, they give the 2010 squad an edge we’ve been waiting for. Swinging from the outside hitting position, Stephanie Casillas and Marissa Tomei, are deceptively good athletes. They can produce on offense with a great range of swings and smarts shots while also delivering on defense with quick reactions. Finishing up the freshman class is Channing Laufou who can fill any number of spots on the court. Offensively she jumps well and can hit from the outside or opposite positions. She is also an effective setter who can run the offense without hesitation.

he 2009 Chargers made plenty of history earning the program’s first ever Orange Empire Conference Championship. The team also took a program best 24-5 record to the best finish in school history in the State Championships finishing second. Cypress was locked in a competitive race to the finish in conference and it all came down to the last match of the conference season. The Chargers made a statement finishing off Riverside in a 3-0 sweep to clinch the cochampionships. The Chargers earned a playoff spot for the first time since 2005 and made the best of it. They started with a 3-0 first round sweep of Cerritos at home before heading on the road to take on Santa Barbara in the Regional Finals. The Chargers fought to the fifth set and took down

the Vaqueros with a 15-11 fifth set win to advance to the State Championship Tournament. The team travelled to Stockton to begin the eight team tournament to determine the State Champions. Cypress started with a quick sweep of Santa Rosa and Bakersfield finding themselves in the semi-finals against OEC rivals Irvine Valley. Cypress slipped by in a five set win to earn a spot in the Championship match. The State Championship match featured the two OEC co-Champions as Cypress took on Orange Coast. The Chargers had made it through the tournament undefeated up until that point but lost 3-1 to Orange Coast forcing a one game do-or-die situation. Cypress fell to the Pirates 25-16 ending the season in second.
