A Mixed-use, open floor plan Observation Station that serves as a hub for volunteers, an event space, and wintertime warming center.

Huge glass windows provide incredible views and allow for use as a year round greenhouse. Mixed-use tables can be used to grow plants, or be lidded with additional educational signage. A second floor provides access to one section of the building’s green roof.

In order to protect fragile habitats, only a limited number of people can explore the woods in a day, and access is limited to park staff, volunteers, and citizen scientists. Community members can volunteer to earn time in the woods, or check out a key card from the library.

A beautiful, enjoyable boardwalk is publicly accessible and allows for a woodland excursion away from a busy thoroughfare.

Floating wetland habitat

Artificial floating wetlands can create a microhabitat for amphibians and tree seedlings. This built structure will allow habitat to endure through a variety of weather conditions. Citizen scientists will bring seeds from similar forests to the south to plant on the floating ring as part of an assisted tree migration project.

Similar to a whitewater raft, a floating ring encircles a base with mesh self-bailer holes on the bottom.

A planter bed sits on top, along the perimeter. This ring can be inflatable or made of cast mycelium, a natural material that floats. During moderate or dry periods, the floating ponds sit in a recessed area filled with water, the planter flush with the ground. When the forest floods, the floating pond raises up, the floor remaining submerged without weighing down the rest of the structure.
