Hello readers! Well hopefully you’ve all dried off after this week’s rather soggy weather! Personally I love it when it rains over here, much more than I did when I lived back in UK, but I have to admit that the drive up to Torviscas after work on Monday at about 5pm, quickly changed from an exciting novelty, to pant wettingly scary! There was several moments when I began to fear that we would get stuck!

Tenerife Weekly - 6th December 2013 - 12th December 2013 Anyway, we didn’t and as I write this I’m looking at clear blue skies….I just wonder if the same can be said for you as you read this! Of course our soggy week can’t compare to the battering the UK received and is probably still receiving, 142mph winds! And after that it still has a 100 day deep freeze to contend with (see pages 25 and 32). Games console fans can celebrate the release of the PS4 (page 36) and elderly Spanish gamers can receive a medical checkup from their Xbox,(page 19) I can’t keep up! Nor-

Last week residents and visitors alike watched aghast as the heavens opened and Tenerife and the rest of the archipelago were pummeled by some of the heaviest rainfall in years. The meteorological agency Aemet, raised the alert from yellow to orange last Monday, as the downpour, which had been accurately predicted by everyone, from online weather services to knowledgeable locals, finally hit, and boy did it hit!

Flash flooding affected many areas as a sudden and intense deluge, which lasted more than two and a half hours, hit Santa Cruz, Guimar and dozens of other areas sending huge torrents filled with mud and debris, cascading into residential areas from the high grounds. Electricity and telephone networks were affected, although mostly for short periods of time, many roads looked more like rivers by 5pm on Monday and youtube footage of the flash floods at Guimar wouldn’t have looked out of place in a documentary about tsunamis. Arona announced the cancellation of all sports and

The Formas Mágicas (Magic Shapes) company launched their excursion with a difference at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos yesterday. This is an original way to see Tenerife through its rock formations,

using the imagination of the visitor. Reality is mixed with fantasy as the tour points out rocks in animal shapes such as lions or dinosaurs and mythical characters in fairy castles. There are two routes, one through Anaga and the other to Teide, both offer views of over thirty spectacular rock formations in the National and Regional Parks and a clever 3D map presentation.

outdoor activities; they set up an emergency helpline and released an advice sheet offering information on what to do in the case of extreme heavy rain, including advice not to drive and what to do in case of evacuation. The Cabildo also warned of the likelyhood of rockfalls and mudslides, in spite of all this, apart from the heavily hit area of Guimar, schools remained open, much to the dismay of most children! El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma were the worst hit by the storms, where many roads were closed making life difficult for residents. Even Hollywood stars were not spared from inconvenience, the cast and crew of “In The Heart Of The Sea”, including Aussie “Thor” actor Chris Hemsworth, following emergency orders from local authorities were forced to evacuate the set, prompting director Ron Howard to tweet; “Rare heavy rain in La Gomera forced us to our small converted cover stage... Then our access road began to flood... Soon we were advised to wrap and evacuate. Pronto. ASAP... Incident trucks moved to hi (higher) ground & all cast & crew waded to cars (calf deep) & made it out b-4 (before) roads closed... Good luck that no cars or people were swept away or hit by tumbling rocks. All’s well that ends well.” And it’s not over yet, more rain is predicted for this weekend, so don’t think about putting that umbrella back in storage just yet!

folk is in the midst of a hostile clown takeover (page 30) and scientists in the South American rainforests have discovered an insect that looks like one of those toy troll thingys that I never understood the fascination with (page 27). Now we are well into December, hope you like my last minute Christmas ideas on the centre pages, there are a few I wouldn’t mind! Well, until next week, take care, and keep a brolly on hand, just in case!

Kiss Couture Fashion Show Company have teamed up with Club Deportivo Marino and XtremeMartial Arts Gym, to produce an attractive and exciting 2014 Calendar, with all proceeds going to Helping Hands Children’s Homes in Tenerife.

The calendar will feature some of the models from Kiss Couture with the footballers from Club Deportivo Marino, and the MMA fighters from Xtreme. Some of the shots have been taken at The Regency in Chayofa, and also on the home ground of both sports organisations, showing their boys in action. On the day of the shoot makeup was provided by Emilia from Gift of Beauty, hair by Bev at Bamboo Hair Design, and jewellery by Nicki Pywell. Elaine Whillock is the Director for Kiss Couture, and Elaine is also a well known deep tissue/sports massage therapist (www.raynormassagetenerife.com) , working with many of the footballers and martial arts specialists on the island. Elaine said, “I had been thinking since around September that it would be a lovely idea to bring out a

calendar with my Kiss Girls in it and then donate all the profit to Helping Hands. After speaking with Director of CD Marino, Martin Astley, we

Thank you to Tenerife Weekly for the terrific article on page 7 in this week’s issue, about ‘Bonnie’ the abandoned Podenco which Francesca found on Sunday. Thank you once again for printing this & bringing public attention to the plight of all abandoned

agreed that it would be even better to include some of the main players from CD Marino as well, as this charity does such important work for the disadvantaged children in the local community, and with both organisations together we hoped to raise as much money as possible for these children this Christmas. Helping Hands at the moment supports 24 children from very under privileged backgrounds at the Guardyl Children’s Day Centre in Granadilla, and also supports another 28 children with Cerebral Palsy at the CEE Disabled School in Guaragacho. Both these facilities are Government funded by the local Authorities and rely heavily on the support and donations from Helping Hands.

Also many thanks to the whole team at Aktion Tier Accion for their fast response to the emergency, this is a beautiful refuge for the dogs & Marion is grateful for anyone who offers to help walking the dogs. Any blankets, cushions, leads, collars for donations would be gratefully accepted. Yours, sincerely, Gail Astley-Walsh.

Puerto de la Cruz Ayuntamiento and Aqualia have lifted the restriction on drinking water. Concejal de Sanidad, Antonia María Domínguez, and the director general de Salud Pública del Gobierno de Canarias, José Díaz-Flores, today said that tests have now shown that the quality of drinking water has increased to make it safe for consumption. The Ayuntamiento said that the water was being analysed daily for its chemical and bacteriological parameters.

Once again, land and air units from Salvamento Marítimo, Guardia Civil and Policía Local were involved, looking along the coast as well as out at sea. Sadly, after three days without any sighting of the missing man, the search was called off until any further developments which may take place. located in central Santa Cruz and close to the Teatro Guimerá tram stop on Line 1, Atipicc Coworking is an open forum for entrepreneurs from different sectors to develop their project space. Commercial Area Tram (ZCT) continues to grow. The initiative, created by the Cabildo of Tenerife and developed by Metropolitan, has established a new venture, Atipicc Coworking, fully equipped available spaces where independent professionals and small businesses can develop their projects. Efraín Medina, the insular Minister of Employment and Economic Development, noted the importance of this establishment as a new engine of development and economy for young entrepreneurs in the metropolitan area. The Socialist majority prevented debate and vote on the motion of Adeje’s Municipal Heliport’s inclusion in the list of aerodromes and heliports State Aviation Safety Agency. Tourist flights, including night flights, operate daily from here, flown by a private company based in the facility. But the heliport is built in a green area within the scope of Barranco Las Torres and is not covered by the General Urban Plan. Ricardo Moreno, spokesman for Adeje CC stated “it’s unjust that after nine months of repeated requests, we are also denied the debate in full, showing once again the opacity with the Mayor of Adeje manages the affairs of the Municipality.” a scientific team led by the University of Granada and Involcan under the Cabildo, has begun a new seismic experiment in Tenerife, with researchers from the the University of Granada, Department of Geography, University of La Laguna and University College Dublin (UCD) and Involcan. The aim of this new experiment is to determine the variations in the speed of propagation of seismic waves in the structure of the island, influenced by external variations, in a state like the current volcanic stability. It is possible that in the future, if there was an increase in seismic and volcanic activity on the island, you could see the same through its correlation with the change in the speed of seismic waves. Different seismic stations will provide information on potential changes in the velocity of seismic waves, associated with external factors like ocean tides or terrestrial or atmospheric influences. Also, this experiment will be useful to calibrate the broadband seismic network recently acquired by the ITER will be deployed in the Canary Islands during the first half of 2014. Jesus M. Ibanez the coordinator and responsible for these projects, specializes in Volcanic Seismology, and is currently focused on coordinating another study of the structure of Mount Etna in Italy in order to establish procedures to improve early warning systems of potential eruptions.

a PHoToGraPHiC exhibition by El Corte inglés on the international missions of the armed Forces

From 2nd to 19th December, El Corte Inglés,Tres de Mayo, will host a photo exhibition entitled “De Canarias a Afganistán. Fuerzas Armadas. Misiones Internacionales”, which includes the work of Tenerife journalist Antonio Herrero, who was present at the Spanish base, Ruy González de Clavijo during the recent withdrawal of the Spanish contingent. The opening of the photo exhibition took place last Monday the 2nd, at 7 pm, with a talk by Lt. Col. Ramón Navy Command-Canarias who was deployed in Afghanistan, also speaking was Joaquin Catalan (Director Newspaper La Opinion de Tenerife), Antonio Smith (reporter coordinator exposure), and was moderated by Ricardo Acirón (Professor of Journalism). The ASPFOR XXXIII (Spanish Force Afghanistan) is the fourth Spanish military group formed on the basis of the Light Brigade “Canary XVI” Command Canary and remained deployed in Afghanistan until May, stationed at the base “Ruy González de Clavijo” in Qala I Naw, capital of the province of Badghis. The contingent consisted of about 900 soldiers of the Army, Civil Guard and Air Force. Of these, 660 were from the Canary Islands, 75 were women and 14 were foreign. The bulk of the contingent consisted of personnel Light Infantry Regiment “Canarias 50”, based on Gran Canaria. We must also highlight the contribution of units of Light Infantry Regiment “Tenerife 49”, located at Hoya Fria and of the Third Infantry Brigade of the ANA (Afghan National Army) which

took over the Spanish base when the withdrawal was completed. Spain reached the province of Badghis in 2001 with a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) that was supported by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI). Spain’s investment, which exceeds $ 340 million from 2006 to 2012, allowed them to carry out various projects such as education, health, water and others. The Canary Islands has contributed to three groups. The first one was formed in 2007 based on the Light Infantry Regiment “Canarias 50” was called ASPFOR XVIII. The second rotation, ASPFOR XXIII, had as its main core Light Infantry Regiment “Soria 9”, based in Fuerteventura. The third contingent was deployed in 2012 and the bulk consisted of the Light Infantry Regiment, “Tenerife 49”. The humanitarian mission of the Spanish Armed Forces in the conflict zone has also taken a sad toll on human life, many gave their lives in the line of duty including Corporal Cristo Ancor Cabello San-

tana, who died in an attack with IED on October 7, 2009 Sergeant Perrino Argudín Manuel and Pineda Marín Niyireth soldier, killed in an IED attack on June 26, 2011. All of them belonged to RIL “Soria 9”. Antonio Vázquez Herrero (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1962), a Doctor in Information Sciences, is undoubtedly one of the most authoritative Canarians, when it comes to security issues, courts and defense. Although he has developed extensive experience in various media, his articles can be read in the newspaper La Opinión de Tenerife since 2003. He has extensive training, provided by the School

of Army War Journalists and Photographers for War Correspondents. A regular contributor to various areas of radio and television, he is currently immersed in writing his first book, “Covert Operations in the Canaries.” He is the recipient of several awards and distinctions in both journalism contests of the Captaincy General of the Canary Islands as the Board of Trustees of the University of La Laguna. Recently, for several weeks he accompanied the Spanish soldiers of the Light Brigade “Canary XVI” Canary Command deployed in Afghanistan until its final withdrawal and return to the Islands.

Bermuda To Badajoz Is This Barranco The Tenerife Triangle?

By Marc Craig Yesterday was December 5th, on this same day back in 1945, at 2:10 p.m., five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers comprising Flight 19 took off from the Ft. Lauderdale Naval Air Station in Florida on a routine threehour training mission. Flight 19 was scheduled to take them due east for 120 miles, north for 73 miles, and then back over a final 120-mile leg that would return them to the naval base. They never returned.

Two hours into the flight, the squadron leader, who was familiar with the area, having flown it for more than six months, reported that his compass and back-up compass had failed and that his position was unknown. The other planes experienced similar instrument malfunctions. Radio facilities on land were contacted to find the location of the lost squadron, but to no avail. After two more hours of confused messages from the fliers, a final distorted radio transmission from the squadron leader was heard at 6:20 p.m., apparently calling for his men to prepare to ditch their aircraft simultaneously because of lack of fuel. By this time, several land radar stations finally determined that Flight 19 was somewhere north of the Bahamas and east of the Florida coast, and at 7:27 p.m. a search and rescue Mariner aircraft took off with a 13-man crew. Three minutes later, the Mariner aircraft radioed to its home base that its mission was underway. The Mariner was never heard from again. Later, there was a report from a tanker cruising off the coast of Florida of a visible explosion seen at 7:50 p.m. The disappearance of the 14 men of Flight 19 and the 13 men of the Mariner led to one of the largest air and sea searches to that date, and hundreds of ships and aircraft combed thousands of square miles

of the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and remote locations within the interior of Florida. No trace of the bodies or aircraft was ever found. Although naval officials maintained that the remains of the six aircraft and 27 men were not found because stormy weather destroyed the evidence, the story of the “Lost Squadron” helped cement the legend of the Bermuda Triangle, an area of the Atlantic Ocean where ships and aircraft are said to disappear without a trace. The Bermuda Triangle is said to stretch from the southern U.S. coast across to Bermuda and down to the Atlantic

coast of Cuba and Santo Domingo

The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s

Triangle has long been associated with the mysterious disappearances of both aircraft and ships, although the US claims it doesn’t exist. The first written boundaries date from an article by Vincent Gaddis in a 1964 issue of the pulp magazine Argosy, where the triangle’s three vertices are in Miami, Florida peninsula; in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and in the midAtlantic island of Bermuda. The area is one of the most heavily travelled shipping lanes in the world, with ships crossing through it daily for ports in the Americas, Europe, and the Caribbean Islands. Cruise ships are also plentiful, and

pleasure craft regularly go back and forth between Florida and the islands. It is also a heavily flown route for commercial and private aircraft heading towards Florida, the Caribbean, and South America from points north. Although the flight 19 mystery occurred in 1945, it wasn’t until the 50’s and 60’s that the area gained notoriety with the publishing of a number of articles, including several about Flight 19 by author Allan W. Eckert, who wrote that the flight leader had been heard saying; “We are entering white water, nothing seems right. We don’t know where we are, the water is green, no white.” He also wrote that officials at the Navy board of inquiry stated that the planes “flew off to Mars.” Sand’s article was the first to suggest a supernatural element to the Flight 19 incident. Triangle writers have used a number of supernatural concepts to explain the events. One explanation pins the blame on leftover technology from the mythical lost continent of Atlantis, which interestingly, another potential site for the mythical ancient civilisation is right here, off the coast of Tenerife. Other writers attribute the events to UFOs. This idea was used by Steven Spielberg for his science fiction film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which features the lost Flight 19 aircrews as alien abductees. Again, coincidentally, as I’ve covered before, Tenerife is a UFO hotspot. So, aside from the connection between UFOs and Atlantis, what else does

this mysterious part of the Atlantic and our island have in common? The Barranco de Badajoz or Chamoco is a ravine here in Tenerife, part of the municipality of Güímar in the southeast of the island. There are many legends about experiences people have had who have visited and stayed mainly at night in the Barranco de Badajoz. Many people claim to have seen apparitions of angelic beings, and have experienced various paranormal phenomena, ranging from UFO’s, poltergeists and orbs, balls of fire, and many other spectral phenomena. Indeed, Unexplained Tenerife, a paranormal investigation team that I’ve worked with, has carried out several investigations with some interesting results. But the one story which makes me think of the Bermuda Triangle about this strange Canarian gorge is “the girl with the pears”. Back in the early 1900s, it is said that a child’s parents sent their daughter to the ravine in search of fruit but she disappeared and never returned home. The area was completely tracked by neighbors and friends of the parents, who desperately searched for their daughter, but could not find her anywhere. Finally, they gave up their search. Several years later, the girl returned home, looking not a day older, no time had passed for her. So, are these phenomena another mystery of Atlantis? Interference from inter-dimensional aliens? Or just a couple of unrelated scary stories? We will probably never know for sure.

Tri Tenerife Sur

by Gerard Zenou It was a test for the brave, 1.9 km swim, 96km bike and a half marathon to complete the challenge. An event of pure spectacle which featured 169 participants turned the south of Tenerife in the capital of European triathlon when only here in Europe the weather al-

lows you to perform a test of this type in the month of November.

At 8:00am, Playa de las Vistas hosted the swimming segment. First out of the water was Frederik Van Lierde, from Lanzarote the world champion in team mode. After going through boxes, the triathletes began the most dramatic, tough and sexy, climb to Teide by bike.

They started from sea level to reach 2,200 metres in the Teide National Park. The Italian Jonathan Ciavatella started gaining ground putting space between him and the others as soon as they began to climb The run between Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas was the final segment, followed by a lot of tourists that encouraged triathletes. With the support of Turismo de Tenerife, Tenerife Top

Training Promotors, the Tri Tenerife Sur is strategically located in the international triathlon calendar thanks to the excellent climatic conditions of the island. All participants enjoyed a meal on Sunday morning in Tenerife Top Training from 13 hours where the ceremony took place to award the trophies. Winner. PENNE PIETERJAN...Belgium: 5 hours 35 minutes

documentary “Understanding Volcanic Hazards” and “Reducing Volcanic Risk”, which have been published by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) and the United Nations in the development of the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). The third day a presentation on the volcanic phenomena and volcanic risk management in the Canary Islands was performed.

“Canary Islands: volcanic window in the Atlantic” was born from the need to inform and educate citizens residing in the Canary Islands on the various hazards associated with volcanic phenomena, one of the key activities in the emergency plans in the case of volcanic risk. Basic Guidelines for Planning Civil Protection that Spain considers necessary for the development of Civil Protection and Emergency procedures for Volcanic

Risk in the Canary Islands (Pevolca). Through this program, the public gets to know what actions we are taking for reducing volcanic risk. Therefore, the ultimate goal of this program is to ensure the Canaries are better organized and informed about the volcanic risk, thus becoming much less vulnerable than a community that does not know or ignores volcanic hazards that surround it, and is not organized to respond.

adeje marks international day for people with disabilities

englishtimeadeje.com adEJE council under the direction of the councillor for people with special needs, Carmen rosa González Cabrera, has designed a programme of activities to mark international day for People with disabilities, december 3rd. The events, which included an audio visual presentation of the services in the borough took place in the Los Olivos Occupational Centre. Councillor Carmen Rosa said the council was dedicated to supplying the resources required by those who face special needs challenges. “We feel lucky that we have this opportunity to mark this celebration as it will allow us show what is new in the Los Olivos centre, and highlight the services that are provided to

improve the quality of the lives of those who use the centre on a regular basis. The councillor added that as well as the full support of all the council departments, they were also able to call upon the support of private businesses and associations who often helped out in supplying material, necessary to ensure that the centre operates to its

maximum potential in helping users. Among the new services are early stimulation therapies for very young babies with orientation courses for new parents with special needs children. Cognitive stimulation courses for adults have also been introduced to strengthen the capabilities and attitudes of participants.

have had to close this year and an uncertain 2014 awaits these special party guests. THE PrESidENT of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Carlos alonso, has requested the Canary islands have a “unique treatment in the application of the Coastal act”, so that it can contribute to a better ordering of its coastline, including the protection of environmental values and historical, cultural recognition and ethnographic values of coastal communities.

Alonso was speaking at the opening session of a conference on the reform of the Coastal Act organized by the Cabildo, which included the Journal of Urban Law and Environment and the Center for Advanced Legal Studies (Cejus). Accompanied by the Minister of Planning, Pino de León, and magazine editor, Francisco Alegría, Alonso claimed that the administrations of the islands have authority in coastal management. The president of the Cabildo Insular de Ten-

erife stressed that each country has its peculiarities and wants the Coastal Act applies specifically, “a perfectly valid argument for the Canaries since, being islands, the coast is a key element in the definition of our territory where, in the case of Tenerife, only three municipalities, Vilaflor, El Tanque and Tegueste lack coastline.” Carlos Alonso reiterated the fact that the coast is a major element in the urban development of the Island, “but also an environmental and economic resource of relevancy, especially regarding tourism.” Minister de Leon, recalled that during the pendency of the law currently in force, amendments to solve problems in several areas of

Levante, Andalusia, Galicia and the Balearic island of Formentera, were accepted “but not in the Canaries “. Finally, Francisco Alegría noted that the Coastal Act has raised considerable controversy throughout Spain and has created problems in implementation, so appreciated the organization of this event as an ideal forum for reflection and debate on the implementation of this standard. The course includes lectures from Professor of Administrative Law at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Angel Menendez Rexach, teachers Andrés González and Angel Lobo, Professor Francisco Villar and lawyer and specialist in the area of ports and port authorities, Nieves López.

EVENTS ON THE ROCK Christmas Nutcracker in Tenerife by janetanscombe.com

It’s the ultimate Christmas ballet, loved by children and adults alike since its first performance in St Petersburg on 18 December 1892, and it’s in Tenerife South for Christmas. It has been staged here on many previous years by many different companies, and this year Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker will be performed by the Escuela Municipal de Música y Danza de Arona and the Escuela Municipal de Folclore de Arona in the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos on Monday, 23 December. The ballet features some of the most famous and memorable music ever written, and it’s most decidedly a show not to be missed. The performance starts at 7pm and tickets, priced at 2 euro, are available from the auditorium’s café between 9am and 9pm, all days of the week.

Gospel Christmas concert in the Magma Centre by janetanscombe.com

Gospel concerts always go down well here – the London Community Gospel Choir concert in Los Cristianos a year ago was a sell out and got rave reviews and there is another chance this year with a Christmas concert being given by the Chicago Gospel Group. The concert, Singing Gospel Christmas, is being held at 8.30pm on 9 December in the Magma Arte & Congresos centre, and will include numerous traditional gospel songs and Christmas carols. The Chicago Gospel Group is directed by Percy E. Gray Jr., a Stellar Awards winner in 2005, and two-time nominee for a Grammy. Tickets cost 15 euros and are available at the Magma Centre’s box office, or online.

I Have The Tickets – Now Roll On 2014! by redqueenmusing.wordpress.com

For me it has been a bit of a quiet week; however one exciting thing to have come out of it is that I have booked my tickets for January to see Les Misérables at the Auditorio in Santa Cruz. As it is probably my favourite musical along with Blood Brothers, I am really looking forward to it. Forget that it is all in Spanish, I can probably translate word for word what is happening on stage (sad I know). opportunity this year for many competitors to improve their international ranking, one of the reasons many of the world’s top flyers would be here. He also explained that Adeje’s geographical make-up and characteristics mean that there are constant thermals that make it an ideal flying and training zone 365 days of the year. Both men sought to reassure, particularly in the light of recent incidents,

that this is a safe sports. “There are accidents as there are in any sporting discipline, but in many cases these happen as a result of people failing to properly inform themselves as to the particulars of the location before they fly. With that in mind we would also ask that anyone, tourist or residents, who wants to fly in Tenerife to get in contact with the federation or with one of the many paragliding clubs in the zone who will give them all the information they need before they fly”. Adeje sports councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera was also present at the conference, and welcomed the continued recognition of Adeje as a top sports tourism zone. The federation suggest that one of the best places to view the event and competition will be the La Enramada beach where the flyers will be landing on the afternoons in question having completed their flights. Canary islands: Second place for tax fraud

by newsinthesun.com The Spanish Work inspectorate has reported that there are about one hundred and twenty thousand people working in the black economy in the Canary islands, in contrast to the nationwide estimate of four million.

The black economy represents a loss in tax revenue for

Spain of about twenty million Euros. Some studies put the archipelago in second place in Spain in terms of tax fraud. Officials are concerned not just for the figures but surveys that show that seven out of ten people tolerate this type of practice. This and other data is emerging from a conference held on “The Fight Against Social Security Fraud and irregular employment” at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC).

man dies internationaL daY to Stop vioLenCe againSt women at playa de Las vistas

by janetanscombe.com it was inevitable at some point. a 63-yearold russian man died around midday last Sunday, after drowning at Playa de las vistas. The poor man was pulled from the water by fellow bathers, but despite assistance from lifeguards, emergency services, and both national and local police, attempts at resuscitation failed and he was declared dead at the scene.

Lifeguards say that in such emergencies, instant attention is essential, as indeed are proper provision of supplies.

roZ Jeffrey attended the battered Women’s office on the 25th November to liaise with the Canarian authorities so that they and the English speaking SHE Europe helpline work smoothly together.

They expressed their fury at the impotence they feel at essentially having to stand and watch this sort of thing happen. They conveyed deep sympathy to the family of the dead man and said that they hoped, in due course, the family might consider taking legal action against Arona Ayuntamiento.

Roz Jeffrey was delighted at the success resulting from the two meetings in November, concerning the help available to women in the south of Tenerife. The first meeting with tea and cakes was well attended at the Tenerife Family church held in its Silencio premises at Coral Mar. Everyone enjoyed the presentation from the British Consular’s team advising on what they could and couldn’t do to help in circumstances involving sexual abuse in the workplace, domestic violence and rape. tf1 extension Saga – Continued

by janetanscombe.com despite the timescales already announced, which saw the icod-El Tanque extension completed next year and the adeje-Santiago extention waiting until 2015, the Cabildo has now announced that the schedule and funding will be rearranged so that the south extension works will be brought forward, and the adeje-Santiago stretch completed, in the main, in 2014.

The Cabildo is now putting the change of schedule to the Canarian Government for final approval. Unfortunately for those who live in the Tijoco-TejinaVera de Erques areas, it is their part – the ongoing seemingly insuperable problem with bridging the barranco de Erques – that will have to wait until 2015. The “main part” of the extension

and the final performance. rehearsals have started on Frid a y afternoons in los Cristianos and there is still room for performers as it is not fully cast.

to be completed next year is the túnel del Bicho and the Vicácaro bridge. This means that the TF1, as far as traffic is concerned, will still end at Adeje, and resume at Tejina to continue on to Santiago del Teide (the so-called “chicken run” stretch), where it will find another gap awaiting completion through El Tanque. I suppose we should really be pleased that some works are going ahead, but at some point they really are going to have to come to terms with bridging that Erques barranco … otherwise the whole extension will have been something of a joke.

Two Tenerife Family Church members of the SHE Europe helpline gave details of the phone support they give to the community. They also mentioned the signs to look out for in friends and colleagues who might be trapped in an abusive relationship and too frightened to ask for help. A second meeting in Los Cristianos was held in the South Tenerife Christian Fellowship church at the Apolo Centre. Roz was able to talk privately to anyone who needed to talk on a one to one basis, about these issues and she was able to support them. Mainland News In Brief The leaders of Spain and France have announced that a new high-speed rail link between their countries will be inaugurated on December 15th. Spain’s Mariano Rajoy and France’s Francois Hollande hailed the new bullet train service as a sign of closer ties between the two nations. The trip between Barcelona and Paris will take just over six hours. It will eliminate the border hassle travelers currently face of changing trains, and is an alternative to an overnight train trip lasting 11 hours. Rajoy and Hollande also discussed European issues such as a banking union and high youth unemployment. Hollande urged the European Central Bank to find ways to ease tight credit hurting small and medium size businesses in Spain and France. Spain has assured London that the incident in which UK government bags containing official correspondence and communications were opened by Spanish officials at the Gibraltar border, “will not see a repeat of these actions”, according to an official release from the Foreign Office on the update to Parliament on the incident. Two UK government bags containing official correspondence and communications, and clearly marked as such, were opened by Spanish officials, whilst the bags were in transit. Police in Spain’s northern Basque region say an office of the ruling conservative Popular Party was slightly damaged after being attacked with two Molotov cocktails. They say the pre-dawn incident Friday caused minor damage to the front of the office in the town of Barakaldo. No one was injured. No group claimed the attack but it coincides with an increase in street vandalism in some areas that is blamed on supporters of the armed Basque separatist group ETA. Such outbreaks have diminished greatly since ETA ended its armed campaign in 2011. But the group refuses to disarm and has many members still in Spanish jails. Spanish Dream Homes Could Face The Bulldozer

The Spanish government is accused of luring British pensioners into spending their life savings on illegal homes which could be demolished any day.

An investigation has discovered that Spanish officials are desperately trying to flog some of the nation’s estimated three million empty properties. But, the country’s official register of houses includes many which have been built without planning permission and are now at the centre of a huge legal row. Over a million illegal homes were constructed by crooked developers and local town halls over the past ten years during the property boom. As many as 100,000 were bought by unsuspecting expats , fooled by unscrupulous builders, lawyers and estate agents, with victims spending their life savings on property built on protected land. Many now stand empty or are set to be demolished. The Spanish government now wants to sell some of the nation’s vacant homes. Some, which do not have planning permission or are unlikely ever to be sold, are being demolished. As a result, British buyers flooding to Spain seeking a bargain are at risk of purchasing a property which should never have been built. Officials have set up a website, which is supposed to tell buyers if a home was

built with the proper permissions. It lists important details such as legal notices and debts that the property has attached to it. But some homes listed on the website are, in fact, illegal and even have demolition orders against them. Yet these crucial facts are missing from the official register. This could mean that an innocent buyer could purchase an illegal home then be forced to pay for its demolition only weeks later. Thousands of expats are currently

involved in expensive and lengthy legal battles with local officials in Spain in a bid to save their dream homes in the sun. A Spanish government spokesman says: ‘The Spanish government and the communities of Spain have taken steps to ensure that irregularities in the property market are finally settled. Some reforms have already been introduced and others are under way to ensure the legislation protects potential investors and those who already own homes in Spain.

The military is a viable option for young Muslims born in Spain, where unemployment is at 27%, and the jobless rate for under 25s exceeds 60%. Often, the military opens doors for civilian jobs with police or other security-related occupations. According to a classified Defence Ministry document that has been leaked to the Spanish media, the military is quietly monitoring its Muslim

Identified as Showing Signs of Radicalism,” was issued by the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Spanish Army, Lieutenant General Jesús Carlos Fernández Asensio, on October 24, 2013. The document—classified as “confidential” and published by the Madridbased newspaper El País on November 19—states that the Spanish Army has detected within its ranks “the existence of personnel with clear indications of radicalism (ideological, religious or criminal)…in their private and social lives.” The document continues: “The conduct of these individuals constitutes vulnerability for the institution of the Army and poses a potential threat to national security. In an effort to neutralize or at least reduce this risk, the Army has instituted a series of measures that will be applied by unit commanders on suspected military personnel to be determined at any given moment.”

vodafone’s new mobile wallet Service

vodaFoNE has introduced a mobile wallet service in Spain that allows customers to perform everyday transactions by waving or touching their smartphone.

The service is one of the first built on the GlobalPlatform open standard, which makes it easy for organizations, such as banks, retailers and transport companies, to receive payment via your mobile phone. The Vodafone Wallet eliminates the need to carry cards and coins and enables the customers to manage their daily transactions ef-

fectively and securely using their smartphone. The Vodafone Wallet will also be able to hold travel cards, loyalty cards, gift cards and vouchers, with the aim of eventually replacing the plastic cards in a customer’s wallet or purse. Vodafone SmartPass, a service developed in collaboration with Visa, is the first mobile payment application available for the wallet, claims the telecom giant. In order to boost the acceptance of its wallet and smartpass, Vodafone is also talking with major European banks to integrate their card portfolios into the wallet.

Spain Arrests Three In Prostitution Ring

Spanish police have arrested three Nigerians who forced African women into prostitution in Europe, including two women whose children were held captive for at least four months.

Five women in different Spanish cities were freed from the clutches of the gang after a long operation that began early this year. The operation was based on information from a young African prostitute, a police statement said. In August, police rescued two little children; one of them aged three, from an address in Valmojado, near Madrid. They were found in poor health and malnourished. “They were kept locked in separate rooms... at times gagged and tied to the bed”

by captors who fed them tranquilisers to keep them docile, the statement said. “The children were to guarantee that the women paid off their ‘debts’ by going into prostitution and to stop them running away.” The mothers were eventually traced to France, where they were being forced to work as prostitutes. The criminal gang holding them used that and other strategies to bring Nigerian women to Spain and force them to work as prostitutes, the police said. The women were “enticed with fraudulent promises, with false job offers or by abusing their precarious situation”. They were smuggled to Spain by boat from Morocco. Once in Spain, they were sold to pimps in EU countries, the statement said.

Shhhh … New Law Will Fine Insult Or Abuse Against Spain

In a new law that has been approved by cabinet and is currently starting its process through Parliament, Spain is legislating against “offenses against Spain”. The new Citizens Safety Law will see fines of up to 30,000 euros for “insults or abuse” levied against the country or its officials. ”Insult or abuse” is deemed to include shouting, carrying placards, protesting, or demonstrating, even joining a picket line is specified, as is helping prevent an eviction.

Only the other day someone was sentenced to two years in prison for placing a custard pie on the head of a politician. The protester was deemed to have “humiliated” the woman in the course of her duties. He will not go to prison as a two year sentence for a first offender results in the sentence being suspended, but if that is the force of existing legislation, one wonders how severely the ruling conservative party envisages the need for the new law.

The Parliamentary opposition, together with liberty groups, have denounced the measures as repressive. Some use stronger language, but that strong language is likely soon to become illegal on the grounds that it is insulting or abusive. Greenpeace España spokeswoman Sara del Río said that the government was breaking the rules of play in a democracy, and committed the organization to a public awareness campaign to ensure that Spaniards raise their voices against the Bill. The voices already ranged against the Bill have at least achieved the reduction of the proposed penalties. Originally, the law called for fines of up to 30,000 euros on those who take part in a botellón, and up to 600,000 euros for those who organize demonstrations without a permit! Fines for those crimes have been dropped to 1,000 and 30,000 euros respectively. The actual object of the law seems to be the anticipated increasing protests from independence-minded regions like Catalonia which want to break away from Spain, but it seems to me that these measures are a real step backward in a

by janetanscombe.com

democracy that really is still in its childhood, if not actual infancy. How long before even this personal opinion is censored because

it’s “abusive” or “insulting”? Well, early next year is when this law is likely to come into force, so we won’t have long to wait to find out.

Get Xbox Check-up

Doctors in Spain saving their patients a trip to the surgery, by asking their elderly patients to turn on their Xbox and monitoring them via Kinect.

The elderly residents of Basque Country, Spain are among the first to test a remote monitoring system known as TEKI, which incorporates motion sensors and Kinect technology to transmit health information to

their doctors, it also includes apps that allow patients to access a call center that gives medical advice, make appointments with their doctor online, and access their own medical records. This groundbreaking usage of the Xbox peripheral is intending to reduce the cost of healthcare in Basque Country, though the practical benefits to having access to 24-hour monitoring speak for themselves. TEKI allows doctors to access patient data in real-time, eliminating the hassle of physical appointments. Maybe Britain should take note, and start doling out gaming consoles on the NHS!

Football Piracy In Spain

Jav i e r Te b a s , president of the country’s profess i o n a l football association LFP, is claiming Spain’s pay-TV s e c t o r is losing around 500,000 customers due to the piracy of football channels, and that the websites which broadcast football matches via P2P links without owning the streaming rights prejudice football clubs and cable platforms.

he LFP project aims to close the pirate streaming signals immediately on detection and report them to the site holding the link, using the recent anti-piracy law, by which some P2P websites

have already been closed down. Tebas compared the Spanish league to the English football league, which receives a large income through selling pay-TV rights. He also wants to stop the broadcast of free-to-air matches in favour of having themed football channels, like the current Canal+Liga and Gol Television. LFP’s pressure on institutions has already led to some successes against piracy. According to Ricardo Gómez, Iproded’s president, hundreds of pirate channels are being closed every day.

Spain to Lose 2.6 million Inhabitants in 10 Years

In ten years Spain will have fewer inhabitants. However, the ones it will have will be living longer, according to the national statistics office INE, the country is expected to double its number of centenarians.

Spain is expected to lose 2.6 million inhabitants (5.6 percent), resulting in a population of 44.1 million. The calculations were based on trends seen over the past five years. Some 3.9 million babies will be born between 2013 and 2022, 17.1% fewer than in the previous decade. The main cause will be a decrease in the number of women in childbearing age, with a drop of 1.9 million women between age 15 and 49 (-17%) over the next ten years. The outlook indicates that the average number of children born to each woman is likely to rise slightly, from 1.34 to 1.41 in 2022. However, in the

21

next years there will be a 20.4% decrease in the number of children under age 10. Life expectancy will rise to 81.8 for men and 87 for women in 2022, an increase of 2.5 and 1.9 years, respectively. The progressive aging of the population will result in 19.7 million people in Spain over age 64 by the end of the decade, 1.5 million more than the current figure (+17.6%) and those over age one hundred will number 23,428, almost double the current figure of 12,033. There will be a progressive decrease in the number of inhabitants in all communities except those on the Canary Islands – where the number will remain stable – and the Spanish enclaves in Africa of Ceuta and Melilla, which are expected to see increases of 9.5 and 10%, respectively.

The driver of the train that crashed on July 24th outside Santiago de Compostela city, admitted that he was going too fast approaching a sharp bend not far from the station and that he had also been on the phone to a colleague, just moments beforehand. The Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, said last Tuesday that Spain also planned to install ‘black box’ data recorders similar to those used on planes and

other aircraft, which will give a more complete picture of incidents from the train journey, and help to determine the cause of any future incidents. The driver of the train involved in the July tragedy is being held responsible and has been provisionally charged with multiple counts of negligent homicide. Formal charges are expected after another hearing.

Spain maY uSe droneS

SPaiN’S socialist PSoE, has made a parliamentary proposal to put drones instead of razor wire along the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla, in response to conservative P M Mariano r a joy’s statem e n t that the government was prepared to remove the polemical razor wire along the triple separation barrier along the border, if ‘’equally effective’’ means could limit migrant crossings. The motion suggests bolstering the ‘’intelligent

‘’mutilations and serious i n jur y’’ t o the

mafia Boss was ‘fed alive to pigs’

a GroUP of mafia assassins from southern italy beat a rival with a spade and fed him alive to pigs, according to police who claim to have overheard a telephone conversation with an alleged assassin bragging about the murder. Francesco Raccosta disappeared in March 2012 but his body has never been found. Detectives arrested one of Raccosta’s suspected murderers after they allegedly recorded him bragging about the hit after tapping his telephone during Operazione Erinni, an anti-mafia campaign in southern Italy during which 20 suspects were arrested. The suspect was recorded saying: ‘’It was so satisfying hearing him scream...mamma mia he could scream...I didn’t see a thing left... people say sometimes they leave something...in the end

there was nothing left... those pigs could certainly eat...’’ The hit was allegedly one of five carried out in retaliation for the killing of boss Domenico Bonarrigo, who was shot three times while driving his car 11 days earlier, according to investigators. The killings were part of a mob war between rival factions of the ‘Ndrangheta, as the Calabrian mafia is known, for criminal control of territory near the town of Oppido Ma-

mertino. The ‘Ndrangheta is a group of 100 mafia clans who play a key role in smuggling cocaine into Italy and other parts of Europe. They are said to have eclipsed the economic might of the Sicilian mafia, Cosa Nostra. Raccosta is believed to have been killed due to a decades’ long and deadly rivalry between the Bonarrigo-Mazzagatti-Polimeni and the Ferraro-Raccosta syndicate, which he was part of.

Last Friday, at 22.25, a police helicopter smashed into the roof of The Clutha Pub in Glasgow. The pub was packed with over 100 weekend drinkers, and during the search and rescue operation carried out over the following week, 9 bodies were recovered. All three crew in the helicopter died. They were police officers Tony Collins and Kirsty Nelis, and pilot David Traill. The other victims have been named as Robert Jenkins, 61, Mark O’Prey, 44, Colin Gibson, 33, Samuel McGhee, 56, Gary Arthur, 48 and John McGarrigle, 57.

Tenerife Weekly - 6th December 2013 - 12th December 2013

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said radar showed the helicopter dropped vertically “like a stone”, into the Clutha Vaults bar, investigators believe that the possible mechanical failure of the Eurocopter EC135, caused the chopper to drop out of sky, allowing ‘No time for pilot to make mayday call.’ The helicopter wreckage was lifted by crane from the pub and transported on a flatbed lorry to the AAIB’s headquarters in Farnborough, Hants. Its removal allowed firemen to finally complete their search of the site, almost three days after the tragedy. No more casualties are expected. The manager of the illfated pub Saviero Petri, described what he saw when the tragedy occurred;

“I was standing at the front of the bar pouring somebody a drink. I saw what appeared to be an explosion. The pub was plunged immediately into darkness and the roof came down. I was hit with some falling debris on my head, my arm, my leg, and my foot, which subsequently knocked me to the ground. Luckily, from my point of view, this is what saved me where others unfortunately perished, because I had fallen behind the bar. The debris that was falling was landing more so on the bar and then bouncing off it. I could not believe how calm people were within the bar. The majority of people just seemed to be concerned about removing the injured and helping as much as they could. The majority of people

did a phenomenal job.” Nick Clegg paid tribute earlier this week during a visit to the crash scene, to the ‘exceptional’ response of the emergency services and the people of Glasgow. Mr. Clegg said: “The city is united in sadness and grief but also united in very heartfelt sympathy for those affected by the terrible events on Friday night, and also united in unequivocal support for the exceptional job done by the emergency services who have worked tirelessly in very difficult circumstances, and have also had to mourn, or are mourning the loss of their friends and colleagues. Mr. Salmond thanked Prime Minister David Cameron for the offer of military assistance, which was not needed but was “neverthe-

33rd Anniversary Of Mommy, Lennon`s Death What Are They Doing?

A group of children in Tampa, Florida didn’t quite get the Disney experience they bought tickets for after a cinema accidentally showed a teaser for director Lars Von Triers’ new sexually explicit movie, Nymphomaniac.

Horrified parents, reportedly covered their children’s eyes, while others made a swift move towards the exit as the clip for the art house sex film played across the huge cinema screen. Grandmother Lynn Greene, who had taken her grandchildren to see the Disney animation Frozen, said there were some technical difficulties delaying the start of the film so the theatre played another cartoon. But instead of another kiddie flick, a trailer for the most explicit to ever be shown in mainstream cinemas was screened instead. ‘They put in the filler, it looked like Steamboat Willie, the old Mickey Mouse

cartoon, and then all of a sudden it goes into this other scene,’ said Mrs. Greene ‘It seemed like forever when you’re trying to, you know, cover a little guy’s eyes. I didn’t have enough hands to cover his ears too and he got the sound down real good. You’re talking, what, a PG-rated movie to all of a sudden have an R-rated scene up there for little children? My concern is that there should be safeguards in place so that this doesn’t happen again,’ she added. The cinema has since offered free film tickets to those in the audience, to a PG-rated release of course!

John Lennon, a former member of the Beatles, the rock group that transformed popular music in the 1960s, was shot and killed by an obsessed fan in New York City on December 8th 1980, this Sunday marks the 33rd anniversary. The 40-year-old artist was entering his luxury Manhattan apartment building when Mark David Chapman shot him four times at close range with a .38-caliber revolver.

John Lennon along with Paul McCartney was one half of the singing-songwriting team that made the “Fab Four,” the most popular musical group of the 20th century. The Beatles took Britain by storm in 1963 with the single “Please Please Me.” “Beatlemania” spread to the United States in 1964 with the release of “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” followed by a sensational U.S. tour. The Beatles sold millions of

records and starred in hit movies such as A Hard Day’s Night (1964). Their live performances were near riots, with teenage girls screaming and fainting. In 1966, the Beatles gave up touring to concentrate on their innovative studio recordings, such as 1967’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, a psychedelic concept album that is regarded as a masterpiece of popular music. Lennon was the most outspoken of the four. He caused a major controversy in 1966 when he declared that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus,” prompting mass burnings of Beatles’ records in the American Bible Belt. He later became an anti-war activist and in 1975, Lennon dropped out

of the music business to spend more time with his Japanese-born wife, Yoko Ono, and their son, Sean. In 1980, he made a comeback with Double-Fantasy, a critically acclaimed album that celebrated his love for Yoko and featured songs written by her. On December 8, 1980, their peaceful domestic life was shattered by 25-year-old Mark David Chapman. Psychiatrists deemed Chapman a borderline psychotic. He was instructed to plead insanity, but instead he pleaded guilty to murder. He was sentenced to 20 years to life. In 2000, New York State prison officials denied Chapman a parole hearing, telling him that his “vicious and violent act was apparently fuelled by your need to be acknowledged.” He remains behind bars at Attica Prison in New York State. John Lennon is memorialized in “Strawberry Fields,” a section of Central Park across the street from the Dakota that Yoko Ono landscaped in honour of her husband.

We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul’s family.’ It emerged yesterday that speed was a factor in the actor’s death.

The 40-year-old actor, who plays Brian O’Connor in the long-running series, died as the results of a car crash in Santa Clarita, California, last weekend, he was being driven in a Porsche to a charity event by a friend when they crashed on Saturday afternoon. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department said officers found the car engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene and two people were subsequently pronounced dead. It has emerged that speed may have been a factor in the crash. A statement on Walker’s Facebook page declared: ‘It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organisation Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend’s car, in which both lost their lives. We… are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news.’ Walker was the star of the Fast & Furious franchise alongside Vin Diesel and appeared in all but one of the six action blockbusters, beginning with the first film in 2001. Released in May, the sixth instalment in the series, which was filmed on location here in Tenerife, grossed more than £480million worldwide. The seventh film began shooting in September, with a release planned for July 2014. The Fast 7 cast were due to continue filming in Atlanta today after breaking for Thanks-

Do You Want Fries With That Cash?

A Tennessee couple were “lovin it” after they ordered a meal at the drive-thru in the town of Hermitage only to find they were handed a brown paper bag full of cash instead of a McDonald’s breakfast!

Instead of hash browns and a couple of egg Mcmuffins, a bag full of notes to be deposited in a local bank was handed to Stacye and Greg Terry by accident. Upon opening the bag they were shocked to find cash instead of breakfast; ‘My husband opened the bag and discovered the money inside,’ Stacye told

News Channel 5. He said, “You are not going to believe this.” Sure enough, it was their bank deposit money.’ A panicked employee realised the mistake quickly and caught up with the couple in their home a few minutes away. The pair handed the money back without hesitation. ‘The second that he said it was their deposit; my first thing was let’s get in the truck and take it back. There is no other way to

have it. I couldn’t live with myself,’ said Stacye. ‘This will never, ever happen again in our lifetime,’ joked Greg. The owner and operator of the Lebanon Road branch of McDonald’s, Phil Gray, praised the couple for their honesty in returning the money and said the store was ‘grateful’. An internal investigation into the blunder has now been launched. What’s next? Gold nuggets instead of chicken ones?

UK Faces 60 Year Storm Thousands of families are being evacuated as the UK faces the worst storms in more than 60 years. Two people already have died as winds of up to 142mph caused travel chaos and left 100,000 homes without power. In some places, sea levels could be as high as those during the devastating floods of 1953, the EA said, although flood defences since then, including the Thames, Deptford and Hull barriers, should provide better protection than 60 years ago.

A man died after he was struck by a falling tree in a

park in Retford, Nottinghamshire, and a lorry driver was killed when the HGV he was driving was blown on top of two cars on the A801 near Bathgate, West Lothian. Four others were injured in the accident. A meeting of the Government’s Cobra emergency response committee was held to discuss how to combat the extreme conditions. Motorists were warned not to travel due to “extremely dangerous” road conditions and Scotland’s entire rail network was suspended. Gusts of 142mph have been recorded in the Highlands, flights were cancelled at Edinburgh Airport due to the high winds, which also prompted the closure of the Forth Road Bridge. Meanwhile, the rest of Scotland and northern parts of England were lashed

by severe gales of between 60mph and 80mph.The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it was responding to numerous calls relating to fallen trees and road blockages. In England and Wales, a total of 34 severe flood warnings - meaning there is a danger to life - have been issued by the Environment Agency (EA), 28 of them for the Anglian region and four for the south east. Areas most at risk include the North Sea coast from Northumberland down to the Thames Estuary and Kent. At present, there are more than 150 flood warnings - indicating “immediate action required” - and 62 flood alerts in place. Northern Ireland has seen gusts of up to 70mph, with flying debris and high winds leaving around 7,000 properties without electricity.

the Sony troll Bug! Smartwig THiS bizarre creature is a new species of insect found living in the South american rainforest. Teams from the University of Harvard and museums around the world trekked for three weeks to explore the untouched rainforest of southeast Suriname, the new insect was one of 60 new species recorded during the trek.

SoNY has filed a patent application for “SmartWig”, the latest contender in the wearable technology race. The SmartWig can be worn “in addition to natural hair”, and will be able to process data and communicate wirelessly with other external devices. Google and Samsung have also launched products in wearable technology seen as a key growth area;

“Wearable gadgets are definitely going to be one of the big areas of growth over the next two years,” said analyst Andrew Milroy, “And Sony - which is trying to regain some of the sheen it has lost in recent years clearly understands that and wants to play a major role in the sector.” The wig could be made from horse hair, human hair,

wool, feathers, yak hair, buffalo hair or any kind of synthetic material, the communication interface and sensors placed in the wig are covered by parts of the wig in order to be hidden from sight during use. “The usage of a wig has several advantages that, compared to known wearable computing devices, include a significantly increased user comfort and an improved handling of the wearable computing device,” according to the Sony patent. Sony listed various potential uses of the SmartWig in its filing, including helping blind people navigate roads. It said that a small video camera or a sensor on the wig could help to provide the position and the location of the wearer. A remote user can then use the images provided and send vibration commands through the network and navigate the wig user manually to a desired destination. “Although navigation systems based on vibration mo-

tors have been widely introduced, a navigation system integrated into a wig... is so far not known,” the firm said. A further potential improvement of the wig may use ultrasound waves to detect objects around a user. Sony added that the SmartWig will be compatible with other devices such as glasses and smartphones, and within the gaming industry or “any type of virtual reality appliance” could also be an “interesting field” of use for the device, though it did not provide any details. It could have uses in the healthcare sector, as a combination of sensors can help collect information such as temperature, pulse and blood pressure of the wearer. “The system can detect these kinds of data naturally and transmit them to the server computer,” it said. The firm has not decided on any plans for commercial production of the SmartWig yet.

Cavemen victims were dinner Hosts! New evidence has emerged regarding the remains of a massacred Neanderthal family in the El Sidrón cave system, near asturias, which had been killed and eaten by a neighbouring group. researchers believe it was the site of a brutal caveman dinner party

– where the guests butchered the hosts!

Scientists used modern forensic techniques to show how the family, which included children as young as two, had been murdered, stripped of their flesh and then eaten. The group was made up of three adult males, three adult females, three teenage boys and three children, aged between two and nine.

The 7mm-long creature is golden and its elongated body is covered in orange dots and stripes. It has hairlike feelers sticking out of its rear which resemble the fuzzy hair of the colourful Troll Dolls, a popular toy in the 1990s. Researchers believe the bug is an immature insect called a nymph, possibly fitting into one of four nymph families: Dictyopharidae, Nogodinidae, Lophopidae, and Tropiduchidae. In insects that undergo a gradual metamorphosis, the stage of the life cycle that hatches from the egg is called the nymph. Often, the nymph looks like a smaller, wingless version of the adult. The nymph may molt several times to reach adulthood. Insects that undergo simple or

gradual metamorphosis, and have a nymph stage, include grasshoppers and crickets, cockroaches, termites and dragonflies. Princeton’s Dr Trond Larsen, who is a tropical ecologist and conservation biologist, spent days studying the creature; Dr Larsen said: ‘I have spent hours searching drawers of nymphs to compare it to other species, but have only been able to narrow it down from 16 to four.’ I couldn’t match it with anything we have discovered before. I can’t get it into a family with

certainty, it could be any of these four we know about but it is very difficult to tell.’ The iridescent ‘tail’ that grows from the bottom of some nymphs is in fact made of wax. It is produced by specialised glands in the abdomen. The wax serves a variety of purposes - in some species it grows into a fan shape and can slow descent while falling. It can also act as a distraction for predators. The international team of field biologists studied the mountainous region of southeastern Suriname in the Guiana Shield, a vast area of South America that contains more than 25 per cent of the world’s rainforest It is among the most remote and unexplored tracts of rainforest left on Earth. The scientists collected data on water quality and a total of 1,378 species, including plants, ants, beetles, katydids, fishes, amphibians, birds and mammals. Dr. Leeanne Alonso, the expedition’s leader, said: ‘I have conducted expeditions all over the world, but never have I seen such beautiful, pristine forests so untouched by humans. Southern Suriname is one of the last places on earth where there is a large expanse of pristine tropical forest. The high number of new species discovered is evidence of the amazing biodiversity of these forests that we have only just begun to uncover.’

Karen’s Long walk

Meet Karen Fell. Karen, from New Waltham, near Cleethorpes, set off at the end of September on what is an incredible challenge, walking and pulling her possessions in a trailer from Zeebrugge to Southern Portugal, over 2000km! This will probably take her between 2-3 years! in her words:

“There is no time limit set for this undertaking; however, there is a dual purpose. My aim is to achieve a personal objective not simply to arrive at a destination and to fund-raise for animal charities native to the countries though which i will be travelling. The motive for this challenge came from the difficult stages of grief I have so far experienced when we lost my

brother in March 2012. This is something I am still coming to terms with and I truly think that this adventure will benefit me and help me gain a better focus in my life.” Phoenix is Karen’s chosen animal charity in France; you can monitor her progress at Karen’s blog at: https:// karenisgoingforawalk.wordpress.com/ You can sign up to receive

her blog updates in order to find out how she is doing and where she is staying. If you’d like to sponsor Karen, all you need to do is log onto the Phoenix website and sponsor, using the Donate button on the website, ensuring that you complete the “Special Instructions To Seller” field with “Karen’s Walk”. Good luck Karen, stay warm and take care!!

NorFolK Police are advising people to ignore what seems to be an epidemic of people dressing as clowns.

Police were contacted after a person wearing a full clown outfit with a red wig in Gaywood, near King’s Lynn on Tuesday, frightened several members of the public.

Superintendent Carl Edwards advised that people ignore the clowns, as it’s the attention that they probably want. ‘Firstly I’d like to stress

that it isn’t against the law to dress up as a clown,’ he said. ‘Nobody has been assaulted and it appears that the people involved are waiting for a passerby to be startled by their appearance and run away, and then the clown runs after them for a short distance. We know there has been a lot of gossip and conversations about this on social media channels, not just in Norfolk, and it is important to gain a perspective on these incidents. We appreciate this can worry people, especially the young or elderly. The most effective way to behave if you are to see someone dressed up is to give no reaction – because that’s what they are after.’ If anyone sees these clowns the Tenerife Weekly strongly advises that you do not approach them, shake their hand or try to smell their lapel flower!

It’s Back!!

It could be argued that it’s THE most famous spaceship in the known universe, some Trekkies may take offence at that statement, but let’s face it, there’s been a fair few Starship Enterprises, but there’s really only one Millennium Falcon... And she’s back!!

Yes, sources have revealed that Han Solo’s beloved ship has already been rebuilt, full size, with completed interiors for the new Star Wars movie, the as yet, untitled Episode 7 due in December 2015! This excellent news bodes well for fans of the original trilogy, who are hoping that the original characters and the actors that play them, are due to return. Rumours have been circulating for months that Han, Luke, Leia and the gang will return, but so far the only character absolutely confirmed is the plucky Astromech Droid, R2D2. The fact that Solo’s

customized ship will feature in the new movie, points massively toward at least an appearance from Harrison Ford as Han. The space freighter was last seen in Return of the Jedi in 1983, its revival also seems to indicate a more retro, back to basics movie, more in common with the originals than the CGI overkill of the prequels, something new director JJ Abrams has been promising. This is my own personal opinion, as plot details are non-existent, so anything out there is pure speculation, but I imagine the presence of the iconic ship may involve a handing over of the keys, from Han to a younger character - perhaps his own son Jacen Solo, future Sith Lord, Darth Caedus! Now that could be exciting!

Hunger Games Theme Park Planned

Katniss could be headed in the same direction as Harry Potter and Jurassic Park. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer, has been speaking about the possibility of a Hunger Games theme park – presumably one which doesn’t involve the actual killing of tributes! After the box-office success of the original Hunger Games movie, and its sequel, Catching Fire, investors have ap-

proached the studio to talk about possible franchise-themed amusement parks. “We have been approached in two different territories about potential theme park opportunities, which gives you a sense of the cultural impact of this franchise,” Feltheimer said during a conference call after the release of his second-quarter results.

“We are excited about those opportunities and are pursuing them,” he added.

‘Indications are that December will most likely be colder than average. For December-JanuaryFebruary as a whole uncertainty is quite large but below-average temperatures are more likely than above-average.’ Meanwhile bookies are giving odds of 5/1 for a white Christmas, although forecasters have said it is too early to say for sure. Syrian rebels eat Lion a SHoCKiNG picture of a group of Syrian men, possibly rebel fighters, has emerged showing just how desperate for food the Syrian rebels and their communities are – so hungry that a zoo’s lion was butchered for its meat.

The photo shows men carving pieces from the big cat, which is believed to have been taken from Al-Qarya al-Shama Zoo. Although the photo has been shared widely on social media, its legitimacy could not be independently verified. Hunger is

spreading across Damascus, the capital of Syria, particularly in rebel-held blockaded regions where food is scarce. Residents of Ghouta are believed to have been behind the slaughter – a suburb of Damascus that has been marred by starvation.

SharpLeS in SeSSion By John Sharples

daley goes gayley

Many people may think that the fuss about Tom daley, coming out of the closet is over the top. Many people will not understand why he is being called brave.

The truth of the matter is that he has been very

brave indeed. In the world of sport, being gay still has a terrible stigma attatched to it. I just hope and pray that he wasn’t given an ultimatum by one of the gutter press and that his decision to come out of the closet was his own and no-one else’s. Now, of course, they

will all be clambering to get the first photograph of the boyfriend. The poor lad doesn’t know what he has done, the flood gates are now open. I find it all very interesting, especially given Russia’s poor record on human rights. Let’s see what happens next!

do it Before You go Home

only a few weeks ago i was on my holidays in Florida. Sunny orlando gave me all it had to offer and i took it all in. i saw shows, lost my nerve on white knuckle rides, had the life scared out of me on Halloween and only a week later i celebrated Christmas in true american style. it was a wonderful holiday and everything was done to excess.

I have never been the sort of person who can lie on a sunbed all day and sit in a karaoke bar all night. I need to explore and I need to see some entertainment. I wasn’t disappointed with Orlando at all, but then again, I was never disappointed with Playa de Las Americas when I used to come to Tenerife on holiday. There is plenty to do on the Island. There

is more to do than most tourists will even think there could be. Take a look around folks. Don’t just sit in your hotel because it is all inclusive, get out and see a show, watch a cabaret, visit out fantastic national park and take a bag of charcoal up there to the picnic areas. You don’t know what you are missing!

it hit dizzy heights during David Tennant’s reign as the doctor. I sat with bated breath waiting for the 50th anniversary episode in which Tom Baker and the well over-rated Billie Piper made appearances. When the 75 minute special finished I couldn’t help feeling that I had enjoyed myself but I have no idea what had really happened. The plot was a load of old rubbish and I am sick and tired of the world being saved by a screwdriver, albeit a sonic one. Sack the writer and get a real storyteller in again please!

So it rained. it was called a major storm on Spanish Tv and most of the people that i know on facebook had nothing else to talk about. The fact is that it hardly ever rains in Tenerife and although the island of El Hierro was badly

that question is …. Probably! My friend Chris and I went on a testing spree and came out of the perfume shops as high as a kite. At the end of all the testing we decided that the two best and most distinctive men’s smells were Cacharel and Aramis. They have both been around for years and

Who on earth wants to spend about 50 quid on something that isn’t going to last until the end of the night? I have a couple of other favourites but I will keep those to myself ….. Well, I don’t want to smell like everyone else, do I?

Hefner bought the rights to the photo and slapped it in the middle of his new magazine. And Playboy was born. Love it or hate it, Playboy is a brand that become part of the culture – its bunny logo is instantly recognisable and the magazine helped invent the phrase, ‘I buy it for the articles’. In an age where viewers of pornography get their fix online, you may think that the magazine’s biggest threat is the internet. However, the brand has had these bases covered for some years. Playboy Enterprises holdings include a TV station, digital network, online division, radio station and apparel and collectibles lines, as well as nearly 30 international editions.

‘This is a massive global brand,’ said Playboy’s editorial director, Jimmy Jellinek. ‘You need a global icon in order to celebrate that – that was the impetus. You’re talking about the face of Burberry – the biggest supermodel in the world – on the cover of Playboy. She’s the perfect partner to help launch the next 60 years.’ Although it’s impossible to predict whether the magazine will still be around in 60 years, Hefner, now 87, certainly won’t be. When the ultimate playboy heads off to the Playboy Mansion in the sky, it will be some funeral – he owns the burial plot in an LA cemetery beside the remains of – yes, you guessed it – Marilyn Monroe.

he was uninvited,’ said Nathan Anderson-Dixon. ‘He leaned in and rudely helped himself to the fruit bowl. But I wasn’t surprised because he’s very good at persuading all the other animals to give him their food too. He is eating us out of house and home, but we can’t get angry at him. He is like a big soft giant teddy bear and has become part of the family. Despite his regular visits, Joe hasn’t mastered a knife and fork yet. He is a messy eater and the mess he leaves takes ages to clean up. He has no table manners,’ Nathan joked. gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard Late autumn and winter bring the heavy downpours of rain to the island and many plants spring to life again or start off from dormant seeds. Many parts of Tenerife become very green with vegetation.

Amongst the plants that are at their best at this time of year are many that we can forage for and take home to eat. Some of the most nutritious grow as weeds and are very easy to find. The wild beets which are the ancestors of the beetroots we cultivate and are all familiar with are common on the island. The four species that grow here are Beta procumbens, B.patellaris, B.vulgaris and B. webbiana. They are variable in form and very similar so you would need to be an experienced botanist to know which was which but you don´t need to be that fussy because they can all be cooked as greens and taste very similar to spinach. The wild beets are found on coastal ground but also are common as weeds in gardens and on farmland, as well as on waste ground. Although they are related to the beetroot you will not find swollen bases to the plants, though the wild beet often has a purplish-red colour to its stems. Chickweed (Stellaria media) is often seen in gardens and on cultivated ground where it forms patches of its tiny green foliage, straggling stems and minute white star-like flowers. Chickweed is delicious eaten raw in salad or in sandwiches or it can be cooked as greens and served with a knob of butter on top. The bladder campion (Silene vulgaris) is easily recognised when flow-

ering. It has white flowers and each one is carried in an inflated calyx that gives the plant its name. The young leaves and shoots of bladder campion can be eaten raw but the plant can also be cooked as greens or added to soups and stews. It is often collected in mainland Spain where it is an important part of traditional cuisine. Shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursapastoris) is a small plant that grows as a weed in gardens, along paths, on cultivated land and in waste ground. It gets its name from its seed-pods that are like tiny hearts and make it easy to recognise. Shepherd’s purse tastes a bit like cabbage and is so popular in China that it is sold in the markets there. Goosegrass (Galium aperine) is a common weed that many of you will already know because it has tiny hook-like bristles that make it cling

to clothes or the fur of an animal. Children delight in throwing the plant at one another. Goosegrass climbs up and over anything in its way and is often found in gardens and on waste ground. The plant can be cooked as greens and the seeds roasted and ground to make a coffee substitute.

Bladder campion The common mallow (Malva sylvestris) is another common weed that is edible and nutritious. It grows in waste places and on cultivated ground and has mauve flowers. The almost rounded leaves are good cooked like spinach and have a lot of mucilage in them. In Arab countries a related species is used

Bladder Campion in traditional dishes

Bladder campion is used to make Huevos revueltas con collejas (“Scrambled eggs with bladder campion greens”) and Potaje de garbanzos y collejas

(“Chickpea and bladder campion-leaf stew”) in mainland Spain, as well as a dish known as Gazpacho viudo (“Widower gazpacho”). This reference to a

to make the popular soup known as Melokhia. The pretty ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) gets its name from the minute bladder cells that cover its succulent stems and leaves making it look almost frosted. It has attractive daisy-like flowers and the plant takes on a reddish appearance in very hot and dry conditions. The ice plant is very commonly seen covering areas of coastal ground and can be found at the tops of beaches where it tolerates the salinity well. It has edible leaves. The pigweeds or Amaranthus species are often found growing in waste places and on cultivated ground. These plants can be cooked like spinach. The wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) has whitish flowers with four petals. It is very often seen growing in large patches in fields but can also be found along pathways and on waste ground. You will know if you have the right plant because it tastes like radish! The dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is too well-known to need a description. It can be found growing in lawns in Tenerife. The whole plant is edible and very good for you. Flowers, leaves and stems can be eaten raw, while the root can be roasted and ground up to make a coffee substitute with no harmful caffeine. Dandelion flowers make a good base for brewing a powerful home-made wine too. This is just a small selection of the edible plants that can be gathered on the island. Always be certain of the identity of anything you are going to eat though and avoid collecting along roads and paths where herbicides could have been sprayed. Happy foraging!

widower was because this was only made and eaten when times were hard and meat was scarce.

In Crete bladder campion shoots and leaves are eaten after being gently browned in olive oil. In Italy bladder campion is known as “Sculpit stridolo” and is cooked as an ingredient of omelettes and risotto. In Cyprus it is so popular that the plant is cultivated and sold in bunches at markets.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Console wars: 4 against one

FaNS queued round the block in central london for the new PlayStation 4 console, when it went on sale at midnight Thursday last week, by Friday afternoon it was already “starting to sell out” in a first-come first-served launch, with shoppers so desperate to get their hands on one before Christmas , some camped overnight for a chance to get their hands on one of the consoles. a Sony spokesman said:

“We are starting to sell out - very rapidly but [we] will continue to work with all parts of the supply chain including our partners at retail to get more, as and when we can.” The UK launch comes two weeks after the PS4 was launched in the US and a week after Microsoft’s Xbox One was launched worldwide. Both consoles sold over a million in the first 24 hours. The PlayStation 3 wasn’t the success Sony had hoped for, although just outselling Microsoft’s Xbox 360 worldwide, its expensive launch price and lack of irresistible games left it lagging behind in North America and Britain. Fortunately for Sony, the PS4 is cheaper and more powerful than its main rival, the Xbox One, Sony has aimed its new console squarely at gamers, spending little time trying to compete with Microsoft’s TV and multimedia features. As well as being considerably more powerful than the Xbox One, it is £80 cheaper; however, the price is reflected in the fact that it doesn’t include an equivalent of the Kinect camera/ motion sensor. Sony’s focus on gamers means the PlayStation 4 has no support for live TV, Skype or anything similar to the Xbox One’s split-screen technology. It does have film and music streaming options, though, and, unlike the Xbox One, BBC and Channel 5 apps are ready from day one. Both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 have suffered problems after their launches in the US and worldwide. Users of the Xbox One reported that the

console’s disc drive made a loud noise when they tried to insert a disc and in some cases couldn’t read discs at all. Microsoft responded by offering a replacement console and a free game download to anyone affect-

ed by the problem. Sony published a troubleshooting guide after some users complained that a blue light continuously flashed on the front of the PS4 console affecting its operation. The PS4 is out now, priced £349.

Cake Mix Fudge Ok – so who’s done it? Probably all of us. Don’t you just love licking the whisks or the mixing bowl of cake mixture? Well.. I have something very special to share with you. I was passed this recipe from a friend of mine – who

told me they had something quirky for me.

A bit sceptical, I had to try it because I was convinced it would be really floury and bitty, but actually it is a fantastic easy way to make a Vanilla fudge recipe. The end result was a sort of Vanilla brownie more than fudge, but it’s so easy and tasty that it

Ingredients:

I packet of basic sponge mix 125g icing sugar 50g butter

just reminds me of being a kid again, eating the leftover cake mix from the mixing bowl! I started by buying a cheap basic cake mix from Iceland (the brand I used was “greens”), and I also used hundreds and thousands to give it a bit of colour, but I suppose you could use chocolate chips, dried fruit or even nuts if you prefer.

Method:

60ml milk Firstly find a microwaveable Hundreds and thou- bowl. Sift in the cake mix and sands (optional, or icing sugar. Then add the butter and the milk - but don’t mix whatever you prefer)

it together. Next pop it into the microwave for 1 1/2 minutes and then remove it immediately and mix it together with lots of strength. It will resemble cake mix. Now add your hundreds and thousands, dried fruit or nuts and give it one last mix. Pour the mixture into a square tin, and pop it into the fridge to set for at least an hour. I left it for a good 3 hours. Remove it from the tin and cut into squares. Simply delicious! Why not add some Rice Krispies. For the different Rice Krispie cake! Anything is worth a try!

It’s got 875bhp delivered by a screaming V8, plus electric power, and four-wheel-drive. Porsche claims 0-60mph in 2.5 seconds, and 0-125mph in 7.2, and 0-186mph (300km/h) in 20.9. The Porsche 918 Spyder is fast, not only is it fast, charge it from a socket and you can drive several miles at high speed before you even need to start the engine. However you won’t be saving money on fuel, because it costs £715,000.

Because it’s got electric motors at the front and rear, the 918 can do properly strong

road-level braking using them alone. That’s regeneration, recharging the batteries like

Daleks and Range Rovers have something in common. Vintage models of Doctor Who’s sworn enemy always struggled when it came to stairs, much like a Range rover or indeed most cars. But like the improved Daleks in new Who, the Range Rover Sport 5.0 V8 climbs staircases. It simply leaps over such obstacles like “an over-zealous kangaroo”.

car also has a set of huge carbon-ceramic discs. A new electronic controller hands off the braking power between the regenerative system and the discs. The 918’s innards are derived from a race engine, the one out of the 2005 RS Spyder race car. Every part is new though, to make sure it’s durable and OK in traffic. There is really no other way you could get this instant yet brutal power delivery with any other solution than the smallcapacity race-type engine plus hybrid. Lose the hybrid you’d be short of torque. Try to recover the torque through turbos and you’d get lag. Try to recover it by building a bigger engine and you’d lose the thrill of 9000rpm. The lightweight tub and rear engine-and-suspension carbon frame are made by

CarboTech in Austria. The engine frame is also carbon fibre, and the panels, and seat frames. Weight reduction is always a priority in fast-lapping cars but here it was extra-vital to offset the mass of the hybrid system. Overall weight is 1634kg. It’s got lightweight magnesium wheels, more visible carbon, a bit less soundproofing, and fireproof seats instead of leather. The 918 also has a conventional road-hybrid mode, the car switching between e-power and the V8 in pursuit of economy. Hit the E switch and you have a 4WD electric car, capable of about 15-20 miles in normal driving. And 0-62 in 6.2 seconds without the engine. The Porsche 918 Spyder, will have had its official launch by the time this goes to print, so if you’ve got a spare £715,000 lying around.

The new Range Rover’s maneuverability comes from its Terrain Response 2 System, which allows the driver to select the “mode” which best suits the conditions. Options include: mud and ruts, sand, rock crawl, grass/ gravel/snow, general driving and now – unlike its predecessor – fully automatic It can also plough through monstrous mud and wade through water 850mm deep, and in a great bit of design, the motorist can see how far water is rising relative to the limit via a large, touch

screen, display on the dashboard Among other things these modes change the response of the throttle, transmission and traction control to help the tyres stick to the surface. As such, this workhorse makes the average motorist look like a superhero over challenging terrain. The Range Rover Sport 5.0 V8 is also impressive on the road. With air suspension that can be raised or lowered, it corners with the utmost confidence. The luxurious cabin has remarkable features such as a screen that shows two images at the same time. And not via split screen, the two images simultaneously fill the entire surface at the same mo-

ment. Which image is visible varies according to the motorist’s seating position. So, the driver might see the satellite navigation readout while the front passenger watches television. The cockpit also contains eighteen-way memory seats, all-around cameras, powered tailgate, electric parking brake, heated windscreen and the key-less entry system. It can even steer itself into parallel paring bays. Filling her up could become expensive though as she only averages 22.1mpg, but this is to be expected when speeding round in a 5.0-litre, 510PS, petrol engine which propels this 4x4 to 62mph in 5 seconds!

Neds BBC 2 - 23:20 - 01:40 PETEr Mullan writes, directs and stars in this drama set in 1970s Glasgow, which tracks a teenager’s attempt to escape the cul-de-sac of gang membership. John McGill (Conor McCarron) is a smart working-class boy who is doing well in school and has bright hopes for his future. He hopes to avoid becoming like his dad (Mullan) and brother (Joe Sluza) - one an alcoholic, the other a violent gang member. But, when John

41

is banned from seeing a middle-class friend from school, it casts a harsh light on the reality of his lower-class background. Feeling disenfranchised and embittered, John falls in with the wrong crowd - the Neds, or ‘noneducated delinquents’. When he comes back to school after the summer holidays, it’s clear that he’s on a downward spiral: talking back to teachers, graffittiing the desks and smoking in school. But after John becomes involved in gang violence himself, it’s clear that was only the beginning of his descent into deliquency.

Sports Personality Of The Year Editor Recommends BBC 1 - 21:00 - 22:00

GarY liNEKEr looks back on the 60year history of bbC Sports Personality of the Year. What started in 1954 as a low-key affair with a surprise winner when Chris Chataway beat four-minute-mile record-setter Roger Bannister, has grown into one of the most anticipated nights in the sport and television calendars, with the 2012 event the biggest ever. HRH Princess Anne, David Beckham, Lord Sebastian Coe, Sir Bradley Wiggins, Paula Radcliffe, Zara Phillips and Sir Steve Regrave are just some of the winners who recall fond memories of the night they won the main award. Former presenter Des Lynam recounts his nerves on

the night, as well as the laughs he shared with Frank Bruno and others, while Lineker and Sue Barker remind us of the moments that brought them, and us, to tears – emotional presentations to legends of sport like Muhammad Ali and Sir Bobby Robson. There are also contributions from Young Sports Personality of the Year winners Wayne Rooney and Andy Murray. In the 60 years Sports Personality has been on the air, sport and society has evolved, but the award remains as relevant and important now as it ever has done. Lineker explains, this is because of the public – the people who are so frequently captivated by sport, and who vote in their thousands every year to select the award winner.

Spain’s Soccer wannabe’s face Huge fines oNCE upon a time every rooney, ronaldo, Pele and Charlton, stoked their future dreams of a career in the beautiful Game, by kicking a cheap plastic ball around the streets of their

childhood, all the time imagining it was a trophy final, and they were using their skills with a ball to lead their country to victory. However, if a proposal expected to pass in Spain’s Parliament goes

punter wins £40,000 then Loses £30,000

STEvE riCHardS, a roofing contractor successfully predicted the outcome of 12 football matches in an accumulator turning £10 into a lifechanging £40,000. but instead of cracking open the champagne whilst imagining what he could do with that kind of money, the 56-year-old the veteran gambler immediately bet £30,000 that Wales would beat australia in Satur-

day’s rugby international.

But lady luck wasn’t with him this time and Wales lost 30-26 in part due to a disputed Aussie try. Rather than being devastated, Richards insisted he was still happy with the outcome – and claimed it was only a matter of time until he hit the jackpot. Mr Richards, from Tonyrefail, south Wales, said: ‘It was a bit of bad luck losing the bet but I’m still almost £9,000 better off than I was when I started. I don’t regret putting on the bet because I had fun and felt relatively calm throughout the game.’

ahead, future versions of today’s Spanish football legends, could find it increasingly difficult to practice that dream. The proposal intends to fine children and adults anywhere from $135 to $1,350 for ‘the practice of games or

sports activities in public spaces not designed for them.’ The move is part of legislation that would also fine demonstrators who insult cops or protest near official buildings without permission. Spain may be home to the world

and European soccer champions, but budding Xavi and Andres Iniestas — who helped propel the national team to be the greatest football side of all time — could be slapped with financial penalties if a proposed law gets the green light. Spain’s governing right-leaning Popular Party passed a draft version of the controversial Citizen Security Law on Friday. The tax would come into force “when there is a risk of damage to people or property” or when traffic is impeded. The plans have sparked outrage, with many critics saying it will hinder cash-strapped wannabe athletes in built-up areas from being able to hone their playing skills. But the proposals are likely to be given the goahead, as the draft reform is expected to pass through Parliament where the Popular Party has a majority. The wide-ranging legislation has already come under fire for proposing to fine demonstrators $812,000 if they insult cops or demonstrate near official buildings without permission. That strand has since been downgraded to a $50,000 fine. Many youngsters who dream of playing for their beloved champions España, now face the problem of having to travel further, pay more and finish earlier, when sharpening their god-given talents, or face the possibility of a heavy fine. Practice makes perfect, what happens to natural talent when it’s not allowed to grow?

iberostar tenerife are Sunk in the Second

by Colin Kirby

by Colin Kirby

CriSS crossing all seven Canary islands in seven days, david dorta ran his way to an inspiring achievement for cancer charity aECC. The Tenerife runner had to contend with very mixed weather but his determination was unwavering and he completed his tour at 8pm last Saturday in Santa Cruz.

Starting out from Lanzarote, David took in Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, and finally Tenerife. That’s 410 kms in 60 hours of pounding the pavements, roads, and trails. The Run Spiral challenge was a mammoth effort that involved 12 plane crossings and 6 boat journeys to link the islands. Along the way David was encouraged by groups of runners on short stretches but he alone went the full distance. Big respect to that man.

earn those Christmas Calories

by Colin Kirby How many kilometers to the mile? There could be five or ten depending on how fit you are for this years Carrera Nocturna along the Golden Mile in Playa de las americas. The race takes place on Saturday 14 december with a 6.30 pm start from Hotel villa Cortes down avenida las americas and back on the coastal path. Those in the 5 km race have two circuits to do and the 10 km runners have to complete four laps. There’s still time to enter if you go to the website www.canaryrun.com otherwise pop along on the night and lend a little encouragement.

NoT a good away performance from iberostar Tenerife basketball team as they crashed 8873 to Unicaja Malaga on Sunday. Their downfall was a woeful second quarter when they were swamped 32-21, that and a failure to convert their rebounds. on the bright side there was a return to form for american luke Sikma with

13 points after coming through an injury scare in the week.Top scorer was blagota Sekulic on 16 but the usual in depth support was lacking.

The La Laguna Pabellon Deportes will be packed this Saturday for the 6 pm visit of Real Madrid who hold top spot in the elite ACB League. It’s going to be a tough challenge and the backing of a 4,000 plus crowd will be vital.

england down to no.13 in fifa rankings

ENGlaNd has slipped three places to 13 in the FiFa world rankings after disappointing home defeats to Germany and Chile this month.

Germany stayed in an unchanged top four, at No 2 behind reigning world champions Spain and ahead of Argentina in third and Colombia in fourth. With competitive matches scoring more points in the rankings, Portugal have moved up nine places to fifth following victories in both legs of their World Cup play-off against Sweden, replacing Belgium in the top five, who slipped six places to 11, the majority of the other teams in the top 20 only played in friendly games. Five-time World Cup winners Brazil move up one place to 10th, while the Netherlands drop one to ninth. USA are one place behind England at 14 and Ivory Coast stay as the highest ranked African nation, in 17th spot. Iran rose four places to 45, replacing Japan as the highest ranked Asian team. Japan fell four from 44 to 48. Australia, who are currently 59th, will be the lowest ranked of the 32 teams in the World Cup draw. Scotland’s recent success under Gordon Strachan continued as they rose two places to 33. Wales dropped 12 to 56 and the Republic of Ireland slipped seven to 67 while Northern Ireland remained unchanged on 90.

the SportS SCene By Colin Kirby

murci is Lethal as marino win the Hard way HavE you ever seen a man age 10 years in five minutes? Cd Marino coach Sosa Espinel went through the process as his team fought off a late siege from San isidro to win 3-2 at home.

It should never have got to that point, Marino were by far the better side and forward Murci was so unlucky not to cap a great display with a hat trick. The problem was two defensive blunders that allowed the visitors back into the game at key points. Pulido and Aaron Darias on the left had San Isidro on the back foot from the start and it only took Murci five minutes to slam in the opener after another raid down the flank. Balduino could have quickly doubled but his header down was stopped by away keeper Juan and then a loose pass opened the gate for Tare to race in and level. Josito went close, an instinctive foot out by the goalie denied him, Lamine

blasted wide, and Balduino coolly controlled the ball before finding the outside of the net. It didn’t help Marino’s cause when Pulido limped off early in the second half, Pablo was an aggressive replacement and the attack was still creating plenty of openings so it was no surprise when a deep header from Murci beat defence and keeper alike to make it 2-1. San Isidro led a charmed life, the goalie blocked with his feet from Aaron but couldn’t cope with some quick thinking from Josito who nipped in with a flick of the head to stretch the lead. It should have been comfortable from there on but again it was a weakness down Marino’s left side that let Dani charge through to set up a tense finish. Murci wanted that match ball so badly, a header over the bar and an

offside shot that crossed the line teased him further. A lovely lay back from Balduino deserved a goal, Richard couldn’t oblige and was some way off with his high shot. Pinned down at the other end Marino blocked a shot from Tare and Matias saved from a Dani follow up as the coach yelled for calm heads, it was enough to see out the game and ensure Marino kept fourth spot.

drawing Breath with girona Changes rESTiNG key players in advance of the derby was a gamble but a 2-2 draw at Girona on Sunday was a fair return for Cd Tenerife even

after wasting a sack full of first half chances. ayoze and Chechu were both guilty of poor finishing but aridane struck early after a Chechu drive pin balled off the home defence before settling nicely for the big forward. The big calls were made in defence, ever present Moyano and Ruiz were replaced with Camara swapping flanks, Rigo starting, and Llorente renewing his acquaintance with the left back slot. There wasn’t the same understanding at the back and twice Roberto showed his growing stature with strong low saves. Chechu was against his

former side and he flipped a shot over the bar and then dribbled into a wall of defenders in a five minute spell. Tenerife looked comfortable leaders into the second half but fortune favoured Girona, they were denied by two agile saves from Roberto in quick succession but the third time the ball fell at the feet of Gerard to level. The second home strike was a purist’s nightmare, Rigo tucked his hands behind his back but still didn’t face front and Gerard added his second. It would have been an injustice to lose, Bruno was the man to put things right late on, he pushed up from defence and showed his strikers what a cool finish looked like.

Pios Plucked And Stuffed By Rampant Tenerife

It was a night that will go down in local folklore, CD Tenerife were magnificent as they destroyed Las Palmas 3-0, and it could have been double that margin. As the crowd wave surged around the packed stadium the Tenerife “anthem” Chicharrero de Corazon” was blasted out with chest bursting pride.

There were a few raised eyebrows on Sunday when coach Alvaro Cervera rested key defenders but it paid dividends, this victory was built on an immense performance at the back, Roberto didn’t have any serious shots to save. The yellow fans will argue they were hard done by with the 19h minute sending off for their keeper Barbo-

sa and the resulting penalty but the stopper clearly took the back leg of Suso as he bore down on goal. Even at that early stage Tenerife were stamping their authority over the game, Ayoze went close with a volley in the opening minutes and the young striker had already put the ball in the net but had it ruled out for offside by the supplier Aridane. Once Ricardo had converted the penalty Tenerife turned on the style, Suso ran them ragged and his pass to Ayoze looked like serving up a second goal but the shot was wide, Ricardo was also wayward just before the break. Las Palmas tried to offer resistance but the Tenerife midfield ran the show and even when they broke through Ruiz was a rock in the centre of defence and Camara at left back was a little terrier who just wouldn’t be beaten.

Deivid had the best chance for the visitors just after the restart but curled his shot clear of the goal. Ayoze has been a bit quiet of late but he was alert and showed his sharp finishing when the ball broke to him, he lashed the ball into the goal and destroyed any hopes that Las Palmas may have nurtured. The sound of the home fans in full cry must have been au-

dible back in Gran Canaria and they soared again when Suso laid the ball off to Ayoze to bang the final nail in the coffin. What a party, Tenerife finished with a swagger and amid the celebrations it started to dawn that with the win boosting the team to 11th spot this season that started so badly could evolve into a genuine promotion play off challenge.
