Editorial

Well, it seems like quite a while since I sat and wrote this editorial, I’ve seen Soul in the Sun come and go, gone back to the UK for the first time in many years, joined forces with my singing brother for a “Wildboyz” reunion (page 14), celebrated my 2nd wedding anniversary, helped to organize another annual “Help for Heroes” fundraiser (page 5), said Bon Voyage to a great friend (page 12) and found out that I’m going to be a daddy whilst all the time try-

So apart from the fact that I’m terrified yet very excited about being a father for the first time, it’s business as usual, I couldn’t be more happy to welcome Stu “Shabba” Greenhalgh (sorry Shabba, I know you’re all grown up but you’ll always be Shabba to me) to our team of regular contributors as our new sports writer, I’ve got a feeling our readers are going to thoroughly enjoy reading your column! This issue is packed

with articles covering local, national, world, entertainment, cookery, gossip, home and gardening, motoring and sports, there’s not one but 2 great competitions from the organizers of “Starmus 2014” (pages 6 & 7) and much, much more. Finally we couldn’t be more excited about the changes made to the Vivo carvery… seriously, try it, you won’t regret it. So, all that’s left to say is, until next issue, happy reading!!

aving pretty much spent most of my days down at Vivo since we launched the Carvery and Gourmet Buffet this spring, either working on the paper or as part of the afternoon live entertainment, I often eat there, it’s great value and delicious too!

However, last week when I walked past at lunchtime, and glanced over, I noticed something had changed, it looked different, even better and quite frankly irresistible, so although I’d had no intention of eating there that day I joined the queue. Everything I asked for looked and smelled amazing, all the staples of a good carvery but a little bit special and, when I sat down to taste it all every mouthful was bursting with flavour, yes something had changed and the editor in me needed to know more... I met Davied Jones, shortly after trying the mouth-watering buffet he had prepared and soon realised that we had a real culinary talent in our humble kitchen, so who was he and why was he here? To fully understand the expe-

Silence For Isabel

T

he following is the statement made by the Mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga, on the assassination of León politician Isabel Carrasco, and was followed by a minute silence on the steps of the Adeje Town Hall yesterday, May 13th, at midday.

“This minute silence is a show of solidarity and a total rejection of a dreadful act which leaves us all wondering how to advance when politics has this reputation of such acrimony.

“Solidarity with those thousands and thousands of politicians who dedicate their lives to looking after their fellow citizens. “It is particularly sad that there are ambiguous and confusing messages appearing on social networks showing a simply contemptible attitude towards the death of a person. Let us all remember that Spain is a free country where the rights of and justice for everyone exists and works side by side. “AT TIMES LIKE THIS THERE ARE NO (POLITICAL) COLOURS”

rience and unique skills that this incredibly talented chef has, it is important to mention some highlights of his diverse and extensive career. Davied has worked internationally at some of the best establishments in the world and has been an integral part of some very successful and innovative kitchens and restaurants. He has also held the position as executive chef for several Royal families and Presidential households, including the Saudi Arabian and Thai royal families as well as our very own Windsors! Davied’s career has taken him to Europe, United States of America, Middle East, Asia and the Far East working at such establishments as Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht club (voted

the best private club in the world), The Pierre Hotel 5th Avenue New York, Pan Pacific Hotels Singapore and the Hotel George V, Paris. His UK experience includes such Hotels as the prestigious Savoy, The Dorchester and Grosvenor; he also started his catering for a Royal Household at the Inner Circle London. As if his role as corporate Executive Chef wasn’t impressive enough, Davied has held the position of Regional Food & Beverage director, leading the kitchens in such world events as the I, M, F international Monetary Fund, G20, W, E, F World Economic Forum and the World peace keeping conference. Davied has managed international teams from 5 to 400 chefs and up to 1300 staff in award winning large banqueting operations catering for over 6000 covers So far, so very impressive, but one question remained; what was a world class chef like Davied doing in Vivo serving me with roast belly pork so good it almost brought tears to my eyes? It seems that Victoria, our new carvery chef had spoken to her dad about wanting to make the carvery something special and her dad, who had

been friends with Davied for over 25 years, and had asked his old pal for advice, Davied then as a surprise for Victoria, flew over and is now offering his expertise to the kitchen with the purpose of creating a menu that can be maintained in quality and taste once Davied has moved on to his next prestigious appointment. Davied aims to take the food at Vivo to the next level, by refining and reinventing the way the meats, vegetables, side dishes , sauces and desserts are prepared, cooked and served, which will ultimately take the Vivo buffet to the highest standard, in terms of presentation and taste, to give you, the diner, an experience you won’t forget. We feel incredibly privileged and lucky to have Victoria on board as our new chef; she is a dedicated and talented cook who genuinely cares, enough to seek advice from one of the best in the business, thereby improving her already impressive skills in the kitchen. So, if you love really good food at incredibly reasonable prices, come down to join us for lunch...you won’t be disappointed!

NEWS ON THE ROCK

Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly

Over a thousand school children enjoy eMMa concerts

THE EUROPEAN Environmental Education Foundation (ADEAC) has given 48 blue flags to Canarian beaches in 2014, up two from last year and Tenerife itself is up one, with 15 blue flags for beaches or coastal facilities this year. They are El Médano and La Jaquita in Granadilla de Abona; Troya I & II, Fañabé, and El Duque in Adeje; Playa La Arena, Los Guíos, and the Los Gigantes sports harbour in Santiago del Teide; El Arenisco and Bajamar in La Laguna; El Socorro in Los Realejos; San Telmo and Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz; Playa San Juan in Guía de Isora; and the Real Club Náutico in Santa Cruz. Another year passes, therefore, with no blue flag flying over Arona’s Las Vistas, Los Cristianos and El Camisón beaches, but Playa La Arena’s award makes it the 27th consecutive year that the beach has won the distinction. A MOTORCYCLIST died shortly before 5pm on May 12th, after his bike was involved in a collision with a car on the TF5 in the San Juan de la Rambla area. The 60-year-old rider was treated at the scene but the injuries he had sustained in the accident were too severe for paramedics to be able to do anything for him. He was confirmed dead at the scene. A 77-YEAR-OLD Los Realejos man has been arrested by the Guardia Civil after being denounced for beating to death his heavily pregnant dog. A neighbour denounced the man and Garachico Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza (Seprona) officers investigated, and found the Podenco bitch buried: she was no more than a few days away from giving birth and had been killed by blows to the head. EMERGENCY SERVICES say that a search is underway at present for a 74-year-old British man said to be missing in the Garachico-Los Silos area. The search started after relatives of John Green, informed emergency services that he had not returned to his hotel in Puerto de la Cruz, and involves the national police, Guardia Civil, AEA, search and rescue teams, Cruz Roja, Policía Local, Medio Ambiente and Guardas de Caza. NATIONAL POLICE plainclothes officers are keeping a watch on end-of-season sales such as the Exposaldo fair in Santa Cruz.Acting on tip-offs and previous experience it seems that this kind of event is being used to launder large quantities of money. Last year one individual spent a considerable amount at a single stand, paying in cash at vastly inflated price. Although the 2014 Exposaldo has only just started, on the first day officers have focused on another case in which two people practically emptied a stand and made purchases totalling around 25,000 euros. The suspects who are of Romanian nationality, travel to such fairs to get rid of cash obtained from illegal sources, turning it into merchandise that can they can either use themselves or , most likely, to resell. THE NORTHERN SECTION of the island ring road, between Icod and El Tanque was supposed to have been completed by the end of March, but this hasn’t happened because a pedestrian bridge to give access to Los Moriscos and Buen Paso, which was ordered from the mainland, is not expected to arrive until this Monday. The head of Road Infrastructure in the Canary Islands, Juan Ventura Medina, told reporters that he estimates it will take two or three weeks to put the bridge in place , so it is expected that the this section of the ring road could be in service in early June. Regarding the section of road between Adeje and Santiago del Teide, part of the structure of the viaduct Erques, given its complexity, is to be constructed in Italy and then brought to the Island but the regional manager confirmed that they have already commissioned the viaduct which will take about seven months to complete, he expects this tranche to be open to traffic in the first half of 2015.

T

hE AdEJE School of Music and dance, EMMA, under councillor Adolfo Alonso ferrera along with the local department of Education, led by councillor Andrés Pérez Ramos, recently hosted the second in a series of learning concerts for young listeners with audiences from infant and primary classes from the borough and outside. The main objective of the initiative is to bring music to the students of Adeje and South Tenerife and also introduce them to the fantastic resources available at the school of music. The concerts also hope to enhance the educational programmes of the schools taking part and encourage the use of music as a learning tool. . Adolfo Alonso said, “this was a remarkable success. The students enjoyed themselves and had a lot of questions about the musical instruments that were used in the concert. What we want from this project is that young people begin to enjoy music in a different way”. For this second event, given the number of students taking part, the day was held in two centres,

the Adeje Cultural Centre and the School of Music itself, with students from Tijoco, Armeñime, Las Torres, Fañabé, Adeje schools and students from Luther King. The programme included a mini-concert with teachers from EMMA explaining the history and possible musical uses of each instrument, the wind, string, brass and metal families, etc. The modern music section included keyboards, bass guitar, drums. sax and voice, was enjoyed by the children in primary school, while those in infants classes enjoyed an carnival of the animals, with a circus theme, each instrument playing a different animal.

Help For Heroes

O

n Saturday, 26th April at 11am, the weekend after St. Georges Day, 16 brave souls daubed themselves with factor 30 and set off from El Rancho, Palm mar to take on what has now become a tradition – the yomp across Guaza mountain, stopping off at the Market Tavern and then onwards to Vivo for the annual H4H (Help For Heroes) and HOW (Help Our Wounded- Royal Marines) fund- raiser!

It was an absolute scorcher on the day, and as the first Yompers began to appear in the distance to resounding applause they look fairly bedraggled and, to try and put it nicely- sun-kissed (although, lobster red would also be an accurate description!) However, they were the heroes present that day as their Yomp was sponsored, more about the money raised later. Of course, a long trek over rugged and steep terrain should be rewarded with an ice cold beer or 10 and as the entertainment began, so did the drink-

ing. Vivo regulars, myself (Marc Craig), Andy Briggs and Helena Campbell were all there to entertain on Vivo’s front terrace as well as some of the cream of the entertainment circuit in Tenerife, a huge thank you to Gordon King, Roxy Rosario, Pip Brown, Suzie Moore, Geoff Aday, The Singing Sisters, Adam See, Lee Rutter, Lisa Bridge, Peter Hoey….. If I’ve forgotten anybody, my profound apologies, my running order didn’t survive the event! I have to be honest, and I’m sure H4H organizer Barry Holroyde won’t mind me mentioning this, we were a little apprehensive as unlike other years when the event was planned months ahead and widely publicized in the Tenerife Weekly, we hadn’t been printing and we only had 10 days to organize and promote the event. We needn’t have worried, with some intense online campaigning and also down to the overwhelming support this very worthy cause has, I think it can be safely said that the day was a resounding success, so much so that although we had planned to wrap up around 6pm in order to set the venue for the nights Decades Dinner Show, the party was still very much rocking until

almost 7.30pm! At the end of the day’s events we had raised 2386 euros, 370 euros of that was from the raffle so huge thanks to all the bars and businesses that generously donated prizes- also thanks to 9the large amount of raffle prize winners who kindly returned their prizes, allowing me to auction them to the highest bidder, raising an additional 215 euros. However, money is still pouring in so next issue I’ll have a final amount, which should beat last year’s total of 2900 euros! So, until next year, I’ll leave it to a true hero, the man who organized this great day to finish off, Mr. Barry Holroyde: “I’d like to say a big thank you and congratulations to those who completed the yomp and their sponsors, to the raffle prize donators and those winners who auctioned, and to everyone who played a part in helping to make this day a great success again this year, (Pat the accountant…I owe you a pint)! Once again I’d like to thank Vivo, Chris, Marc and Neil and everyone there, it’s a fantastic venue which well suits our event in every way and I look forward to next year.”

hE PRESidEnT of the government in the Canaries Paulino Rivero has stated that it would be “insane” to establish a nATo base in la Palma island.

Speaking on Canarias Radio, Rivero said that the region aims at being a peace platform and claimed he was unaware of the project that was backed by Secretary General of the Popular Party, Asier Antona. Antona had told Ser Network that establishing the base will bring about wealth and will allow reusing the facilities of El Fuerte, in Breña Baja municipality. It is believed that NATO officials have visited the facilities in El Fuerte aiming at setting up a military base for eventual operations in Af-

rica, whose coasts are only 95 kilometers away from the islands. The Canary United left (IUC) issues a question in Spain’s Congress of Deputies so that the State clarifies the reason of the U.S. officials’ visit. The organization has stated: “We do not separate the presence of military movements in the last years in the archipelago and will question the Government regarding the role of El Fuerte in the strategy of turning the Canaries into a military operation base in Africa”. They were referring to the interest for the defense of zones of Fuerteventura island, construction projects of a military base in Los Rodeos (Tenerife) and the use of the base of Gando to train NATO, among others.

CAVE in gran Canaria, in what was probably the aboriginal region of Artevigua is a virtual window to the past that is providing knowledge of astronomy by the ancient islanders, since it marks equinoxes and solstices, while inside it the light recreates images related to fertility.

Archaeologist Julio Cuenca, who has investigated the area since the 1990s, said: “The cave was used as a temple and, besides its astronomical function, the light creates in its interior a mythological account of fertility, the likes of which exist nowhere else in the world. It’s like a projector of images from a vanished culture,”

adding that during a six-month period the light creates phallic images on cave walls that are covered with engravings of female pubic triangles. The projections of sunlight gradually cover the triangles, and as the summer solstice approaches and fall arrives, the images are transformed into that of a pregnant woman, and finally, into a seed. Cuenca discovered the cave while copying engravings in the nearby cave of Los Candiles in Artenara, he is a specialist in researching mountain sanctuaries of the ancient Canarians. It was this region the archaeologist identified with ancient Artevigua, an important settlement of the earliest Canarians, whose place names disappeared in the 18th century, possibly due to the eagerness of the Catholic Church to Hispanicize place names used by previous inhabitants.

AVE you ever looked up into the night’s sky and watched the moon rising on the horizon or tracked the international Space Station’s progress across the heavens? did you ever wander what it might be like to be an astronaut up there looking down on Earth? now’s your chance to find out... as three Apollo astronaut “moonwalkers” are coming to Tenerife in September, to speak at the Starmus festival. The organisers of the festival have announced a “Space Art” competition (drawing, painting,

mixed media or digital art), with prizes been awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in five age categories (3 to 5, 6 to 8, 9 to 11, 12 to 14 and 15 to 18). The winners in each category will be given the opportunity to attend the “Space Legends” tribute and meet the three Apollo Moonwalkers (Ed Mitchell, Apollo 14, Charlie Duke Apollo 16, and the last man to walk on the moon Harrison Schmitt Apollo 17) in the flesh. They will also receive a personalised autographed photograph of the astronauts, and their winning entries will also be put on display in the festival exhibition alongside the astrophotography competition entries. The closing date for entries is 31st July and finished artwork should be scanned and sent to

the festival organisers at info@ starmus.com The organisers have also pointed out that the Starmus Festival is open to everyone, young and old, beginners, amateurs and professionals. Anyone who holds a passion for astronomy, science, the arts and music, and who has a desire to know more about where we came from and what’s out there! They still have places available at the discounted delegate rate of 200 Euros for Canarian Residents (reduced from 300 Euros), and there is currently a “two for one offer” where the second person attends for free, if two places are booked and paid for by June 31st. 0 PARRoT BREEdERS from all over the world participate in the 16th workshop organized by loro Parque fundación (lPf) More than 16 informative presentations about breeding and sanitary care of parrots were handled during this international conference At this conference,

conservators, veterinarians, biologists and keepers have participated in various sessions of new techniques for bird’s management, proper and balanced feeding practices, health and medical aspects, as well as the management of hand-rearing of various species, many of them endangered. It took place in the breeding center of Loro Parque with leading specialists in this field.

espite some confusion among drivers, Spain does not have a zero alcohol limit, but the limits are very strict. This new law does not change them, and they are 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre of blood = 0.25 mg per litre of exhaled air. what the new law has changed, however, is the fine. for drivers who have double the permitted alcohol level, or second offenders, the fine has been doubled to 1,000 euros, and there will also be a 6 point penalty. first offenders, or those with less than double the permitted alcohol level, the fine will be 500 euros with a 6 point penalty. Where there is indeed a zero tolerance is with drugs. If a driver’s saliva test demonstrates the presence of any drugs at all, the fine is 1,000 euros, plus a 6 point penalty. If a driver refuses an alcohol or drugs test, she/he will be committing a further offence under article 383 of the Código Penal which can be penalised with a prison sentence of between six months and a year, and a driving ban of between one and four years. (First offenders won’t be imprisoned). This is in addition to an automatic maximum 1,000 euros fine as though the driver had tested positive with double permitted alcohol level. Vehicles of drunk drivers will be impounded if there is no other (sober) driver who can take control.

Driving without insurance will be fined at 1,500 euros, and the vehicle impounded for a month. Drivers of cars with a device to inhibit or interfere with radar will be fined 6,000 euros; workshops who install them will be fined 20,000 euros, an amount intended to display the absolute prohibition on the installation of such devices. Drivers of cars with radar detectors will be fined 200 euros plus 3 penalty points. Cars with children as passengers which do not have the requisite seating can be impounded. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet on all roads. Update 4 October: The Government has today approved the proposed driving and road reforms – the new Ley de Tráfico y Seguridad Vial. The new legislation will allow fines to double from 500 to 1,000 euros for drink driving, and tighten the rules on child seats, as per the details in my original post below. Other measures include the right to test pedestrians for drunkenness or drug abuse, requirements for child cyclists to wear helmets in towns or on main roads, and an outright ban on radar detectors. The law when passed will also increase the speed limit on some parts of motorways to 130 km/h: at present it is not clear whether any of these sections will be in Tenerife. The Bill will now proceed to Parliament for final approval. Original post 26 July: The Government has just announced that the fine for drink driving is to be increased from 500 to 1,000 euros. The amount of alcohol set as the limit has not been changed, nor the number of points lost from the licence – i.e. a minimum of 4. The legal limits are strict:

by janetanscombe.com 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre of blood = 0.25 mg per litre of exhaled air (0.15 for new drivers, or drivers of commercial or special vehicles). Anyone who is over 0.60 mg faces three to six months in prison and a ban of up to four years. In the same law, children under three years of age will be required to be seated in the rear in a child car seat, while those between three and twelve years of age must be seated in a booster seat, whether in the front or rear. Children of any age who are under 135 cm in height must travel in a child seat. The new legislation also outlaws radar detectors: drivers who use them face losing 3 points from their licence and a fine of 200 euros. As far as young cyclists are concerned, those under 18 must now wear a safety helmet regardless of where they’re cycling. Previously youngsters were only required to wear a helmet on urban roads. Despite pressure groups requesting for legislation requiring adults to wear safety helmets, this has not been included in the law. These new rules will come into force towards the end of the year when the new legislation is approved.

hEn, respected blogger and regular Tw contributor Janet Anscombe asked Mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez fraga, to describe the secret to the success of Adeje in a single word, he began the longest speech of the day! And that’s not a criticism, it’s just that quite simply, Adeje has a lot going for it. Members of the foreign press were invited by Cliodna O Flynn to a meeting with the Mayor at the cultural centre in Adeje. Firstly, the Mayor welcomed us stating that he wasn’t a big fan of the word foreigner and he preferred to think of us as from outside Adeje. He explained how in the last 30 years Adeje had changed vastly due to the population explosion and a transition from an agricultural town to a tourist resort. He stressed that Adeje is a modern town but one founded on values. He used the word “Convivencia” or harmony explaining that contact with world press was very important in helping to reach non- speakers of Spanish and that communication and

information are so important for a better life in Adeje. He added that even the Guanches sat with the invading conquistadors to negotiate, so communication has always been an important part of life on the island. One of the primary reasons for the meeting was to appeal to the press to assist with asking residents to join the Padron, not only for the benefit of the individual but also for the council itself as the more people registering, the more Adeje would benefit financially. He explained that the Register doesn’t reflect the real-

ity of the amount of people living in Adeje and went on to say that the Padron and the census were separate and if you declare you want to vote, you only need to do it once. He explained that being on the Padron can produce help and assistance for small businesses, there are lots of support facilities which can even provide office equipment, phones, computers etc for a business that’s trying to get started. As well as discussing the Padron the mayor stressed the importance of learning to speak Spanish and

spoke of the courses available to those who want them. He mentioned that Adeje police now had reached a higher level of cooperation with neighboring police forces and hoped to reduce the amount of unlicensed workers amongst other things. Discussing the financial crisis he declared that Adeje had fared quite well, much better than many places, and that he believed the multicultural presence in Adeje had helped it to thrive. The Council financial state has remained more than acceptable and they have managed to maintain all vi-

tal services whilst cutting a few non vital ones. Finally on the subject of integration which was of course the principal theme of the meeting, the Mayor discussed the many facilities in Adeje to help with integration, such as sports, music, theatre, dance, folk, youth and OAP centres. It was a very enjoyable and informative meeting with the leader of a governing group that is obviously doing a great job, it seems the future looks bright for Adeje!

he Adeje council is marking international day against homophobia and Transphobia which takes place on May 17th.

The department of equality, under councillor Juan Desiderio Agonso Ruiz, has designed a programme of events called “Adeje, respecting sexual diversity, Diverse Adeje”. The object of the events is to continue to raise awareness among the local population regarding the realities of sexual diversity and at the same time demonstrate the utter rejection of any form of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation

or gender identity. According to councillor Afonso Ruiz “among the aims of the department, which are also part of the ‘I Equal Opportunities Strategic Plan’ for the men and women of Adeje, is the advancement of the premise that we must work to ensure the elimination of discrimination in this field”. Among the events planned are workshops in awareness raising in secondary schools in the borough. At the same time the “De Igual a Igual” (Like for Like) programme which is broadcast on Radio Sur will start a debate, led by Patricia G. Ojeda sociologist, Equal Opportunities and LGTB Assessor, followed by a group from the Adeje secondary schools. “Tardes para ti”, (Afternoons for You) will see a talk take place tomorrow, Thursday May 15th, in the Adeje Cultural Centre on sexual diversity. On Friday May 16th a manifesto will be issued and left for the public to read on the steps of the Town Hall until 3pm. There is also a special area in the library in the Adeje Cultural Centre dedicated to literature on and by lesbians, gays, transsexuals, bisexuals, intersexuals and LGTBI. “These actions are promoting values relating to equality and respecting differences as basic and fundamental for coexistence and our work will continue in this regard through education and awareness raising”, said Councillor Afonso Ruiz.

elow are the details of six men who are still missing in Tenerife. To these, sadly, must be added Victor Teni, the athlete who disappeared on new year’s day.

If anyone knows anything about any of these men, please check online for details of how to contact their family, friends or the authorities. Needless to say, there are people here desperate for the slightest news of them all. Meanwhile, Victor’s friends have set up a petition to ask the Canarian government to continue the hunt for him, and to provide specialist mountain help, including dogs, to find him. He is much loved, and much missed. They all are. If you can help with any information, please do. Also missing are: 79-year-old Domingo Pérez Ramos from La Laguna,

Please also remember never to leave your dog in a car. The inside of a car can get very hot, very quickly. INVADER FLIES THREATEN CANARIAN CROPS

T

hE SouThEAST ASiAn invader fly (Bactrocera invadens) in recent years has rapidly spread throughout most of the African continent. however the pest is not yet found in the Canary islands.

This fly is highly invasive, polyphagous, meaning it eats many types of food and has a high reproductive power. It attacks more

than 80 plant species including mango, guava, cherimoya, grapefruit, orange, watermelon, melon, papaya, cucumber, kumquat, avocado, banana and other tropical and temperate fruits, which can be affected either when green or ripe, causing serious damage. The adult has an average size of 5 to 7 mm, with variable colour thorax, ranging from red-brown to black with lateral yellow stripes to transparent. The female has a visible abdominal extension which it uses to deposit eggs inside the fruit. Its life cycle is similar to that of fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata). Once the eggs have been deposited, larvae emerge to feed on the pulp. These

larvae, when at the end of their development, leave the fruit and drop to the ground, where they bury themselves a few inches deep in order to pupate. Pupae of these new adults emerge and a new cycle begins. This pest requires quarantine, which means that a territory affected by it would not be allowed to export to countries where the insect is not found. It is worth remembering that the pest can attack bananas. The introduction of the insect into the Canary Islands could occur through the import of fruit affected by it, so controls at ports and airports are essential. Furthermore, early detection can facilitate the success of eradication programs.

15 yEARS Ago lAST fRidAy, May 9th 1999 to be precise, myself and Mea deen touched down at Tenerife South Airport loaded with as much as we could carry including what we thought at the time was an enormous amount of backing tracks- i think we had 10 minidiscs of mainly karaoke tracks as well as a few priceless recordings of medleys that our band foXX had recorded for us as a leaving present, they were show stopping tracks and we were sure no other acts on the island would have anything like them. We were staying for a few days with the manager of the bar where we were hopefully going to be working, I’d been offered the job whilst on holiday but now it seemed

that things had changed, we were going to have to audition. Needless to say we got the job, but that’s not really what I’m writing about. In those early day a few of our new colleagues were good enough to take us out to the places the staff often went after work. We sampled the delights of Starco and Veronica’s where a truly scary underground bar known as “The Tunnel” which stayed open until the sun was high in the sky and is the nearest thing to the Cantina in Star Wars probably in this galaxy. Well, if anyone has ever been there and walked in when it’s at it’s best you’ll know just what I’m talking about, walking in to the Dubliners is like walking into a Hollywoodised idea of what bars in Ireland must be like, except this was REAL!! place was RAMMED!! Everyone was on the tables and chairs and the atmosphere was ELECTRIC!! Right in the midst of this beautiful madness was a man who I didn’t realise at the time, would become a big part of my life here on the rock. Paul Fitzpatrick is simply a Tenerife legend, and what makes him even more special is you’d be hard pushed to find a nicer guy. The first thing that struck me is what an amazing musician and singer Paul is, a born entertainer and always so professional no matter how many shots his adoring audience bought him. When he’s on stage he’s the ringmaster something all the extremely talented musicians that have worked with him throughout the years I’m sure will agree. But there’s much more to Paul than the fact that he’s an awesome musician, when you first meet him the first thing you notice is that he talks REALLY FAST!! But it doesn’t much longer after that to re-

alise that he’s a really genuine person, and it didn’t take long before we became the best of friends and over the next 15 years the Dubliner and especially visiting Paul became a regular occurrence, and after years of gym sessions, meals, barbecues, boat trips, days at the beach and countless other fun times, myself and Mea had the honour and pleasure to perform at Paul and Alison’s wedding. Now Paul has taken the huge step of selling up and moving his beautiful family back to the UK, but this is not an article to say goodbye, just “see you later bro”, we’re meeting up for the first of many times at the 2nd Wildboyz reunion in November where Paul has graciously agreed to perform. Until then, I don’t need to wish you good luck in the next chapter of your life, when you’re as good as Fitza you don’t need luck!

wind fARM that opens in June on El hierro - the smallest of Spain’s Canary islands will harvest wind off the Atlantic coast of Africa, when there is no wind, a water turbine will generate electricity, making it the first fully self-sufficient island, the world’s first land mass to secure a constant supply of electricity by combining wind and water power.

JAZZ RoJA – The Red Mountain Jazz festival” continues in El Médano (granadilla de Abona) until the 18th of May. Its five turbines will have a total output of 11.5 megawatts - enough power to meet the demand of the island’s 10,000 residents, it is situated at the north eastern tip of El Hierro, near the capital Valverde and will take advantage of the gusts of wind off the Atlantic coast of Africa. Experts say El Hierro will need no connection to any outside electricity network. Surplus power from the wind turbines will be used to pump fresh water from a reservoir near the harbour to a larger one at volcanic crater located approximately 2,300ft (700m) above sea level. When there is little or no wind, the water will be channelled down to the lower reservoir through turbines to generate electricity. The director of the Gorona del Viento wind power plant, Juan Manuel Quintero said: ‘This system guarantees us a supply of electricity.’

When it is officially inaugurated at the end of June the plant will account for half of the island’s electricity demand and that figure will rise to 100 per cent over the following months cutting 18,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year and eliminate the island’s annual consumption of 40,000 barrels of oil.

El Hierro will still maintain its fuel oil power station as a backup. The Canary Islands’s wind power plant has sparked interest from other islands seeking to follow its example. Officials from Aruba, Hawaii, Samso in Denmark, Oki in Japan, and Indonesia have all shown interest. The island also claims that by 2020 all of its 6,000 ve-

hicles are run on electricity, based on an agreement with the Renault-Nissan alliance. El Hierro is already designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, as 60 per cent of the land - around 107 square miles (278 square kilometres) is protected to preserve natural diversity.

fElT iT QuiTE apt to quote the cult musical “the Blues Brothers” in the title of this piece about the long awaited “ wildboyz Reunion “. for the few who don’t know, the movie is the story of 2 brothers who embark on an epic journey in an attempt to reunite the titular band, encountering various legends along the way, as well as copious amounts of madness and mayhem... And the most spectacular police car chase in cinematic history!

Before my wife has a coronary, I must stress that at no point were we chased by multiple police cars, but the rest fits quite nicely! Our version of this story goes back to about 6 months ago. Knowing I had time off at the end of March that my wife couldn’t take, we decided it would be a good time to visit my parents in Scotland, having mentioned this to my Wildboyz partner in crime Mea Deen, now back in the UK and singing solo, we started toying with the idea of a reunion gig in the North-east and when Mea casually mentioned we were considering it on his Facebook page, the response was simply unbelievable! Suddenly it was on! A date was set, our host and compere, honorary Wildboy and

Tenerife icon Mr Nathan Swift was booked and 300 tickets reserved quicker than you can say “Take That Shmake That”! Mea began half a year of making this the party event to end them all.... And I was handed a little something called the Tenerife Weekly! Anyway before we knew it the week had arrived, “ Soul in the Sun” were on the way to Vivo and I was back on UK soil for the first time in 6 years! Diego and bred in captivity,” said Robert Fisher, a research biologist with the USGS. “Some of their offspring wound up in the Canary Islands via the international pet trade, and then got loose” Fisher is one of three U.S. experts heading to the Canary Islands in May to advise scientists and government officials on the behaviour and potential vulnerabilities of the snakes that first raised alarms in 2007. Dogs and hawks have been used in organized assaults against the snakes but so far, fewer than 2,000 have been snared, most of them discovered slithering over the ground. But the problem is, these snakes spend much of their

lives beneath the ground, even the removal of hundreds of visible snakes means, unfortunately, that it is likely that there are many, many thousands more that can’t be seen Those found in Gran Canaria are roughly 30% larger than their wild counterparts in Southern California and according to a 2012 study funded by the European Union “The California kingsnake has a high ability to adapt and its spread to all of the islands is more than likely. “This snake will quite possibly impact the local reptilian population to the point where we see their total disappearance.”

crowd were expecting, animal print outfits (onesies this time) bohemian rhapsody, 500 miles, Take That complete with guest dancers to name just a few!! Before we knew it time at the bar was called and we headed to the after show party at Club Del Mar and then before I knew it I was on a train headed for Manchester Airport, exhausted but warm and fuzzy to know that so many came from so far. To Nathan and to everyone who came thank you from the bottom of my heart, but most of all to my brother, Mea, you did an amazing job organizing the show of a lifetime!! Roll on Wildboyz Reunion II!!

uRing lAST wEEK Titsa, the Tenerife bus company, met with all the mayors of South Tenerife in the Adeje cultural centre to bring them up to speed on plans to improve the bus service in the south.

Present at the meeting were the mayors of Adeje, Guía de Isora, Granadilla, Santiago del Teide, San Miguel and Vilaflor as well as Cabildo councillor Victor Pérez, the Cabildo transport director Manuel Ortega and the Titsa director Jacobo Kalitovics and colleagues. Victor Pérez told the meeting that this was a reorganisation plan that would evolve over the coming years and was designed to increase efficiency in the service. It was the result of months of work looking at how best to meeting the increasing needs of residents and tourists, particularly “given that in the recent decades there has been a huge increase in the local population and the network of streets”. He also assured that none of the existing bus stops would be removed during the reorganisation. Titsa will, according

to the plan, increase its fleet with up to 22 new vehicles over the next five years, and release details of the changes when they are ready to be implemented. The Adeje mayor, Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga congratulated Titsa for taking on the challenge of improving this public service to make it more modern and efficient. He said the service was moving towards “the services of other European areas where public transport has more users, and is more punctual offering a better service.” He said the service has to have a concerted approach to both tourists and residents, and to zones that might have been, on paper, less costeffective but with people who depended on a public transport service. “Both aspects are complementary”, he said, “because if the service isn’t efficient and isn’t’ cost-effective it cannot be concerted” and serve all the public’s needs. The mayor also said he wasn’t’ in agreement with the ‘tourists vs. residents’ dichotomy that some people seemed to support when it came to arguing about public services, saying that the wellbeing of both groups was inter-dependent.

Since its creation in 1989, the Spanish National Transplant Organization (ONT) has overseen more than 90,500 organ transplant operations, including over 57,000 kidney transplants, 21,576 liver transplants, 7,024 heart transplants, more than 3,200 lung transplants and over 1,500 pancreas transplant operations. Spain also has the highest rate of organ donors in the world. In 2013, a total of 1,655 people in Spain donated their organs, with an average of 35.1 donors per million people, well above that of the European Union’s 19.2, the Unite States’ 25.8, and even four times of the Latin America’s 8.2. Dr Rafael Matesanz of the National Transplant Organization said the average number of donors in Spain was between 5 and 6 donors per day, but “there are peaks of 14, 15 or 16 donors and the activity can vary. Very recently we achieved 45 transplants in one day,” said

Matesanz. He added that when it began operating 25 years ago in 1989, the ONT oversaw a total of 550 operations. There are 181 hospitals authorized to take organ donations and each of these has a coordinator who has to speak to the donor’s family and a judge before the delicate, complex organ extraction can begin. The coordination center at the ONT has a list of people who need organs and they look for an appropriate match for the organ. Once the person to receive the organ has been established, the ONT then has to organize transport for the organ to reach one of the 43 Spanish hospitals authorized to perform transplants along with the recipient and the team to perform the operation. This has to take place in a maximum of five or six hours to ensure the organ does not begin to deteriorate. Matesanz said: “It is a c o m p l e x process, which sometimes needs over 100 people to take part, including

the donor’s hospital, the recipient hospital, police, transport, and aircraft etc. I think that transplant in Spain is an honor of national pride. We have been leading the world in the percentage of donors and number of transplants for 22 years. Transplants are a technique which needs constant renewal. When we started 25 years ago, we didn’t expect it would grow to be like what it is now. We are introducing new techniques everyday, such as on preserving organs.” He also believes that transplantation techniques will continue evolving and growing: “It’s reasonable to foresee that in five to ten years we will be doing new things and we will have more activity than at the present.”

Cabrera Island’s Savage Secret

M

AJoRCA’S CABRERA island, like many islands across the globe is a microcosmic world, surrounded by turquoise seas rather than deep space. it is part of a small archipelago located five miles off the coast of Majorca, only two miles wide and three miles long. it is too dry, too barren and just too unforgiving to support human life and remains uninhabited, just as it has throughout human existence. Because

of this, Cabrera’s coastal landscape is considered among the best preserved in the Mediterranean and the island’s bird and marine ecosystems are unique.

In 1991, Spain officially designated the island part of the Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park. Popular with hikers, divers and naturalists, the island is a peaceful retreat of untouched natural beauty. But its history holds some dark secrets that are relatively unknown. In the early 1800’s, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte who had been

targeting central Europe, decided to try his luck invading the Iberian Peninsula. It was a decision that took its toll on his troops, who found themselves fighting an intense guerilla war and, during the Battle of Bailen – in the province of Jaen – Napoleon’s troops were forced to surrender. More than 7,000 French soldiers were taken prisoner and marched south to ‘prison ships’ anchored in the Cadiz harbor. Spanish authorities did not know what to do with their captives. If they gave them back to France they might return to the fight. The conditions quickly deteriorated and fearing epidemics, riots and

the high cost of maintenance, the prison ships set sail. In April 1809, these prison ships sailed from Cadiz destined for the rocky outcrop island of Cabrera. The French captives were exiled on this island without supervision, just dumped on the beach and left alone to their own devices without shelter or clothing, little fresh water (Cabrera has only one natural spring) and without provisions. Official records are sparse, but there are accounts of disease, exposure, starvation, contagion and malnutrition. The prisoners fought gang wars; murder, suicide and complete anarchy were part of the daily routine.

The 1906 Geneva Convention was still a century away but the conditions were horrific even for these more barbaric times. Charitable groups in Barcelona and Majorca managed to get minimal provisions to the prisoners but it was too little, too late. Of the 9,000 French prisoners sent to Cabrera, only 3,500 survived. Today Cabrera Archipelago National Park is administered by the municipality of Palma de Mallorca. Its hiking trails with breathtaking scenery, nature tours and scubadiving in sapphire blue waters show little evidence of the savage existence for those who called Cabrera home from 1809-1814.

MAINLAND NEWS IN BRIEF SPANISH AUTHORITIES said they have dismantled a “primary” cell of the Colombia-based organized crime group Los Urabeños, showing the gang has extended its operations across the Atlantic Ocean. Thirteen suspects, including the cell’s 47-yearold alleged leader who goes by the alias “El Invalido” (The Invalid), were taken into custody in the cities of Barcelona, Madrid and Toledo, according to Spain’s Interior Ministry. The authorities were led to the cell because the suspects were planning to abduct a Colombian entrepreneur who lives in Barcelona. The businessman allegedly owes Los Urabeños US$12.5 million, according to the ministry. The cell was the fourth of its kind to be broken up in Spain since 2011. A JUDGE INVESTIGATING a high-speed train crash that killed 79 people in northwest Spain has recalled 22 rail infrastructure officials to testify as official suspects. Judge Luis Alaez said that people who held positions of responsibility within the rail administrator Adif should answer questions relating to possible crimes against public safety. Alaez in September had named the officials as suspects but a higher court overturned his decision and ordered him to gather more evidence. The driver has admitted going too fast when the July 24th crash occurred and has been provisionally charged with multiple counts of negligent homicide. SPANISH POLICE SEIZED 2.5 tons of cocaine hidden among pineapples on a ship from Costa Rica in one of the biggest ever seizures of the drug, they said on Wednesday. The cocaine was stuffed in 2,296 packages hidden among the fruit in a shipping container that arrived at the Mediterranean port of Algeciras. It was tracked and seized later at a warehouse near Madrid. The authorities gave no estimate for the street value of the cocaine but online newspaper El Confidencial estimated it was worth over 150 million euros. Police arrested six people in the Madrid suburb of Valdemoro, where the alleged drug traffickers are accused of storing the cocaine in a warehouse. The authorities located the drug shipment in Algeciras thanks to a tip-off and tailed traffickers as they transported the cocaine to the warehouse. Spain’s close ties to Latin America have made it the key entry point for cocaine from the continent bound for Europe. SPAIN WILL BE FLYING the Blue Flag of quality on a total of 573 beaches and 108 marinas this year, an increase of 34 over last year. Of those new flags, 23 of them relate to beaches, the remaining 11 to marinas. The overall result meaning that one in five beaches of the coast of Spain are of the highest quality to be awarded the prestigious distinction. The largest increase has been seen in the Balearic Islands, where an additional 25 beaches have now received the award, making their total 85, and the region of Murcia received an additional 7 flags, making 33 beaches. Spain now ranks way ahead of the nearest rivals for quality, with Greece having 407, Turkey has 197, France has 379 and Portugal has 298. The Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Borrego, says that the results show how Spain is confirmed as a holiday destination that puts the country on the “road to excellence”. Continuing that the “economic, social and environmental sustainability is essential to make this more productive, competitive and profitable”. SPANISH POLICE HAVE ARRESTED 752 people in a massive probe into fake businesses created to obtain social security benefits as well as residence or work permits for foreigners. It was “without a doubt” the biggest police operation yet against such scams, said Spanish police chief Ignacio Cosido, estimating the overall cost to the state of the frauds under investigation at 20.5 million euros (US$28 million). “We want to send a very clear message that social security fraud is a crime and whoever commits this crime must know that they have a huge probability of being detained and facing justice,” he said. Police targeted a total of 142 companies across the country. “Among those arrests are 30 managers of the fake businesses, which, without undertaking any real activity, registered employees with social security so as to illicitly obtain benefits or to obtain residence or work permits for foreign citizens,” a statement said. The authorities said the investigation, dubbed “Operation Espa”, remains open and more arrests are possible.

The Tw Political Showcase with Brian harrison

hen the Spanish Constitution was ratified in 1978, it included several clauses within article 20 which were loosely aimed at protecting free speech, and defending the public’s rights to freely access independent media. 36 years on, many broadcasters find it to believe that article 20 of the Constitution was ever passed. It has been claimed many times, by many independent organizations, that the state influences the major media groups to a point where the public are denied access to the truth. In this week’s “P Files”, we’ll look at how and why the media are influenced by public administrations in Spain. The major media groups is Spain generally own a selection of newspapers, magazines, website based services, terrestrial radio stations and TV stations. In each of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities, commercial radio stations and TV stations are allocated through public tenders. These public tenders are based on frequencies in any particular geographical area, and companies are invited to apply for one or more channel. The time it should take from the start of a public media tender until its completion is stipulated by national law as 12 months, though it can be extended if there are an excessive amount of applicants.

All fine up to now, just as any democratic country would operate. But here’s the first bombshell; the selection panel which evaluate sand decides whose applications get passed and whose get rejected, is formed by between five and seven members of the autonomous government. In other words, the state and its politicians decide who we can or cannot access on TV and Radio. This matter is complicated by the fact that the tender processes invariably drag on, in many cases up to seven years. During that seven year period, from the day Joe Blogs Media submits his TV or Radio license application, is he going to allow the editors within his media group to criticize the government who is considering his fate? Up to date, many of these public tender’s results have been investigated by anti-corruption forces and subsequently overturned by regional or national courts.

The results of these “reversed” public tenders is millions of public funds lost in compensating applicants, and chaos on the FM and TDT channels, where in some parts of Spain, every commercial channel, including the nationals, is technically unlicensed. It has been claimed that keeping these channels unlicensed, at the mercy of a government who could apply closure notices and huge sanctions at any given time, is a further ploy to keep those media channels in check. Just last week, a national operator who was granted national TDT frequencies in the pre-digitalization era has now been ordered to close the channels, due to irregularities in the previous governments handing of the frequency allocations. As a coincidence, one of the channels within the particular media group has been very critical of the present government’s policies. A final point to consider this week is that many regional and national media groups heavily rely upon state advertising campaigns. In some regions during the last two decades, funds from public administrations have made up over 40% of media revenue. Would any media group risk the loss of such an important revenue source for publishing unfavorable articles about their paymasters? Next edition of The “P” Files, how the situation is affecting what we see, hear and read in the Canary Islands, and what is likely to happen to the unlicensed operators of both Spanish and foreign language media.

TEENAGERS KILLED IN BUS ACCIDENT

onTERRuBio de la Serena Sports hall was filled to capacity last Sunday, with some 1,000 people attending the funeral while thousands more followed the funeral Mass from outside.

An accident involving a farm vehicle and a bus taking their football team home back to the town Monterrubio de la Serena after a match has resulted in the deaths of five youths aged

between 12 and 15 years. The collision occurred late last Thursday close to the town of Castuera, some 350 kilometers southwest of Madrid, the impact caused the bus to overturn according to Interior Ministry official German Lopez Iglesias. The backhoe driver was taken into custody after testing positive for cocaine and cannabis. The regional government of Extremadura said in a statement that 12 people were injured. It declared three days of mourning in the small municipality of some 2,000 inhabitants,

the streets were deserted and the bars, restaurants, stores, banks and other establishments were closed. Minutes before the funeral began, the mayor of Monterrubio, Antonio Blazquez, said that local residents are “destroyed” by the deaths of these youths, all between ages 12 and 15, and warned that “the worst is yet to come.” At the funeral were numerous floral tributes including those sent by Spain’s royal family and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

oCAl RESidEnTS of the famous party island of ibiza- one of Europe’s top tourist destinations which is famous for its nightclubs and turquoise waters, have responded with fierce opposition to the prospect of offshore drilling, claiming the white sand beaches and marine life will be damaged, as well as the lucrative tourist industry.

Carlos Bravo of the Blue Sea Alliance said: “Everyone is against it here.” The umbrella organization of 50 groups including environmentalists, hoteliers and unions, hope to halt oil exploration off Ibiza and Formentera, a neighboring island that is only accessible by

boat. In February, more than 10,000 people with signs like “The Mediterranean is not for sale”, marched in protest through Ibiza Town against the planned exploration. Regular A-lister visitors to Ibiza like Paris Hilton and British model Kate Moss have voiced their support. Hilton wrote on her Instagram page earlier this year: “Ibiza is in danger. It is not a myth, not a metaphor and not an exaggeration. The island is facing an ecological disaster.” Supermodel Moss has signed a petition urging the Spanish government not to allow the oil prospecting to go ahead, and posted a photo of herself holding a sign that read “Ibiza Says No” to her 32.8 million Twitter followers. British firm Cairn Energy has obtained four

exploration licenses for the waters around the Balearic Islands, and plans to use seismic imaging, which bounces sound waves off the ocean floor, to map pockets of underground oil in the region before it applies for government permits to start drilling. But environmentalists claim the sonic shocks used in seismic imaging are a threat to marine life. Txema Brotons, the president of Tursiops, a research and conservation group based in the Balearic Islands says endangered bluefin tuna, the striped dolphin, the longfinned pilot whale and sperm whales are at risk if the tests go ahead: “Cetaceans are very sensible to noise. This will interfere with their capacity to communicate and search for food. They (the sonic shocks) generate a huge noise level, 10,000 to 100,000 times louder than the engine of

an plane, which seriously harms fish, cetaceans, turtles and invertebrates.” Local fishermen also want the tests to be stopped, Pere Valera, the head of Ibiza’s main fishermen’s group said: “Cetaceans, fish and their larvae... they are all going to leave, we have seen what has happened elsewhere, there was a 70 percent reduction in catches after seismic imaging.” The Spanish oil industry could create 250,000 jobs and account for 4.3 percent of gross domestic product within 20 years, based on an estimate that Spain has reserves of two billion barrels of oil. Environmentalists also fear for the Canary Islands, where seismic imaging has already taken place and oil drilling is set to begin later this year despite protests by island residents.

MAP PROVES SPAIN IS OUT OF SYNC

A

MAP of ThE woRld created by google engineer Stefano Maggiola, reveals how much Spanish time is out of sync with the sun. Mr Maggiola was inspired to create the map during a trip to Spain, after noticing the country’s unusual daylight hours. The map reveals the large parts of the globe are out of sync with ‘solar time’ – the time according to the sun. The sun rises gradually across the world, due to the earth’s tilt, but this is not taken into account by

time zones that cover ‘too large an area’, he insists. So while it may be midday according to watches throughout an entire time zone, the sun will only actually be in the middle of the sky – at the midday point – for a small fraction of it. This means that the sun rises and sets here more than an hour later than it does in Naples, despite the countries being in the same time zone.

SpanISH FOODIeS reallY DIg TruFFleS

T

RufflES ARE a rare delicacy, tremendously difficult to find, so much so that “truffle hunters”, who make their living digging out the tasty treats, rarely divulge their secret method to outsiders.

In the Spanish region of Somontano – the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the old Spanish kingdom of Aragon, truffles grow in the roots of evergreen oak trees on hills covered with wild rosemary, thyme and lavender plants. Nearby at Secastilla – translated to mean seven castles – are some of the highest vineyards and a limited number of truffle hunts are open to tourists around the Somontano area. Around the area are caves, gorges and canyons which make it popular with visitors who like outdoor activities such as climbing, potholing and water sports. You can also go walking in the hills, amid almond and olive trees, with the snow-

capped Pyrenees in the distance Contrary to popular opinion, truffle treasure seekers use dogs - not pigs. Pigs were traditionally used to hunt truffles but dogs are now more commonly used. Truffle hunter Mario Cequier says: “Most dogs are suitable – it’s not a matter of breed but whether they are willing to work.“Pigs are more difficult to work with, harder to transport and when they find the truffles they try to eat them! Dogs sometimes also try to eat the truffles but less often.” When a skilled canine digger with a talented nose for truffles senses his quarry, he will begin digging frantically at the spot, until his master gives the order to step back. On all fours and armed with his punal, a dagger-like tool with a mean spike, the determined hunter bags his prize. The rare delicacy is held in high regard and larger ones can be worth a fortune.

i

n SAn SEBASTiAn, the seaside resort town in the Basque country, just 12 miles from france, is the birthplace of the pintxo (pronounced pin-cho), and there’s no shortage of places where you can sample this ultimate finger food. Pintxo bars aren’t as upscale as the many starred restaurants, but they offer an appealing gastronomic experience that melds tradition and innovation with

the Basque love of fresh local ingredients. Pintxos are smaller than tapas, the small plates of Spanish cuisine that have become famous throughout the world. Pintxos are designed to be just a bite or two, often not even served on a plate just a napkin. Locals and visitors often practice a kind of pintxo pub crawl Gabriella Ranelli of Tenedor Tours, which takes tourists on culinary excursions in San Sebastian has this advice: “ Eat only one pintxo at each bar, because each has its specialty. Savor it with a glass of wine,

and move on to the next place. Most pintxos are served on napkins, and the way you dispose of the napkins will mark you as a local or an outsider. When you are finished, don’t leave the napkin on the bar or look for a garbage container. To demonstrate true Basque style, raise the napkin into the air and throw it to the ground under the bar. Don’t just drop it like a kid feeding vegetables to the dog. True locals fling it to the floor with flair, take one last swig of wine and move on to the next place.”

Round 700 African migrants charged Spain’s barbed-wire border fences last week in the country’s north African enclave of Melilla, clashing with Spanish and Moroccan border police in the latest attempt of African immigrants trying to cross into Europe. The two north African enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta are particularly vulnerable and have had repeated attacks by hundreds of immi-

grants since the beginning of the year.

The migrants rushed the fences in two waves, with 500 arriving in the early hours and a further 200 four hours later. Police used pepper spray to try to force migrants down from the 20-foot (6-meter) -high fence, but some climbed onto the lamp posts used to illuminate the border. More than 150 people perched on an outside border fence, fending off police by setting fire to clothing and throwing it at them, Spanish officials said. Some even swung batons wrenched away from officers. Some migrants were treated by Red Cross staff and five were

taken to the hospital, 12 police were injured. The new arrivals made their way to the region’s temporary immigrant center, which now contains more than 1,900 immigrants, a statement said, adding this meant the facility was above its capacity. The European Union’s southern countries — France, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal and Spain — are unhappy about bearing the costs of border enforcement. Spain and Morocco stepped up border vigilance in February when 15 migrants drowned trying to enter Ceuta.

The ad begins with a model posing in front of a full-length mirror; she grabs a cushion and shoves it under her dress so that she looks pregnant. It makes her happy; she must like the idea of being a mother. So far, so good. She then suddenly grabs a

pack of condoms and stabs them each with a pin. Shrugs at the mirror and walks away “Happy Mother’s Day!” the ad proclaims. ,Desigual says the ad was supposed to be light-hearted and funny but the response to the ad has been overwhelmingly negative, with men and women all over Twitter responding to Desigual in some variation of, “WTF were you thinking?” Desigual has responded by removing the scene with the condom-piercing from the commercial, so now it’s just a lady dancing around and happily imagining what it’s like to be pregnant. The original is still available online.

hE SPAniSh woman who famously took it upon herself to ‘restore’ a prize fresco of Jesus Christ known as Ecce homo is to be the co-star of a new rock video clip.

Cecilia Giménez made global news in August 2012 when she ‘touched up’ a 100-year-old image of Jesus known as Ecce Homo (Behold The Man), Gimenez’s “monkey Jesus” became a global phenomenon, but the 82 year old suffered panic attacks due her new found fame as the ‘world’s worst restorer’. The church in the town of Borja in Spain’s Aragon region has become a tourist attraction, with thousands visiting the sleepy town to view the revised artwork. Gimenez has even held an art exhibition in 2013, and obtained rights to the image she has created, money she diverts to charity.

Now she’s turning her attention to the music business. Spanish singer Ángel Petisme has penned a song based on her story and has asked her to appear in a video clip for the tune. The self-described singer, poet, and subversive said: “I’m a great admirer of Cecilia, her story made me reflect. I felt a great deal of sympathy for her. We were the real ‘Ecce Homos’, the ones who took a morbid fascination in the story of an unfinished restoration and turned it into a trending topic.” The song featurs a dialogue between Giménez and her creation, the Ecce Homo, with the “abandoned” artwork thanking its loving restorer. The video for the “tender, emotional” story will be shot in Borja, with Giménez playing herself while Petisme will be the Ecce Homo.

russia Outraged as Bearded Drag Queen wins!

AST wEEKEnd 26 countries competed in the grand final of the 59th Eurovision song contest at the B&w halls in Copenhagen, denmark which resulted in a win for Austria’s Conchita wurst with 290 points. The netherlands and Sweden came second and third respectively. uK hopeful Molly Smitten-downes came in 17th place with a score of just 40 with her song Children of The universe.

Wurst’s presence in the competition had proved controversial in some countries.

In Armenia, Belarus and Russia -- where a law against “gay propaganda” was passed last year -- petitions were circulated calling for the singer to be removed from the competition or edited out of the broadcast. In Russia, Wurst’s win drew boos in some places where audiences had gathered to watch the contest. The “queen of Europe” was praised for her stirring performance of her haunting ballad ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’on Twitter, with comparisons to Shirley Bassey . As she accepted the Eurovision trophy, she said: “This is for all those who believe in the future of peace and freedom – you know who you

are. You are unity and you are unstoppable.” Much anger was directed at Russia who “phoned in” to share the voting results for its nation. The live audience booed as the countries spokeswoman delivered its top points, a clear indication of the anger towards Russia due the current tensions and violence between Ukraine and Russia, the Russian entry, the identical Tolmachevy twins were also booed during their performance. There was a controversial but moving performance by Hungarian entry Andras Kallay-Saunders whose song ‘Running’ referred to the abuse suffered by one of his friends when they were children. Commentator Graham Norton who was sat

in a tiny studio at the back of the auditorium was startled when Denmark decided to “bring Eurovision to him”, the Eurovision cameramen burst into Graham Norton’s box and covered him with ticker tape? This year’s award for the most sexy yet bizarre Eurovision entry has to go to Poland’s Donatan and Cleo with their song ‘My Slowianie - We Are Slavic’. Dressed as sexy milk maids they suggestively churned butter and poured water in buckets, but the wackiest stage performance of the evening came from Ukraine’s Mariya Yaremchuk with her song ‘Tick Tock’. Ukraine kicked off the Eurovision with a man in a giant hamster wheel. Bring back Buck’s Fizz!!

iAM nEESon, an obvious choice to play James Bond, has never played the famous spy, because natasha Richardson wanted to get married.

Neeson has admitted that the late actress, to whom he was married for 15 years before her sad death in 2009, told him he could either take the role as Bond or they could get hitched: “It was about 18 or 19 years ago and my wifeto-be said, ‘If you play James Bond we’re not getting married!’ And I had to take that on board, because I did want to marry her,” That time frame would have put him in line for 1995’s “GoldenEye,” the first instalment starring Pierce Brosnan. Of course turning down 007 didn’t harm his career, he has an Oscar nomination for “Schindler’s List,” and he’s since become a box office star with roles in “Star Wars,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” and the sleeper hit “Taken.”

i

Other actors considered for Bond have included Josh Brolin, Mel Gibson, Sam Neill and Sean Bean. Neeson isn’t the first actor to almost take a major role, only to have another actor play the part..... Django In “Django Unchained” Jamie Foxx played the title role in “Django Unchained,” but he wasn’t director Quentin Tarantino’s first choice, which was Will Smith, who turned the role down because it wasn’t “the lead.” Bella Swan In “Twilight” Kristen Stewart shot to fame thanks to her role in the “Twilight” franchise. However! The Part Almost Went To ... Jennifer Lawrence, who auditioned to play Bella in 2008, but found fame and more importantly credibility and was later cast in “The Hunger Games.” Lisbeth Salander In “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”

Relative newcomer Rooney Mara was nominated for an Oscar after playing Lisbeth in “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, after Scarlett Johansson was deemed too attractive for the dark role by director David Fincher. Jake Sully In “Avatar” Sam Worthington was the breakout star of “Avatar,” but Matt Damon turned it down to star in “Green Zone.” Severus Snape In “Harry Potter” Alan Rickman made Professor Snape a beloved anti-hero in “Harry Potter.” Tim Roth, however, turned down Snape because he thought the role was under-developed. Captain Jack Sparrow In “Pirates Of The Caribbean” Johnny Depp became one of the biggest stars in the world after playing Captain Jack in “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Jim Carrey was among the major stars considered to play Jack Sparrow in the first “Pirates” film, but the project would have conflicted with “Bruce Almighty.” Gandalf In “The Lord Of The Rings” Sir Ian McKellen p l a y e d Gandalf in all three of Peter Jackson’s

berian permafrost for the past 30,000 years has come back to life. Pithovirus sibericum was discovered by french scientists when a deep layer of frost thawed. it is not considered dangerous to humans or animals, but its revival raises the pos-

sibility of other more deadly viruses such as smallpox being exposed amid global warming. France’s National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), said: “It has important implications for public health risks. The revival of viruses that are considered to have been eradicated, such as the smallpox virus, whose replication process is similar to that of Pithovirus, is no longer limited to science fiction. The risk that this scenario could happen in real life has to be viewed realistically.” The virus which is part of a family of giant viruses discovered 10 years ago

that are so big they can be seen under a microscope was found buried 30 metres (100ft) down in frost. At 1.5 millionths of a metre, Pithovirus sibericum is the biggest virus ever discovered, but it has not infected anything since mammoths and Neanderthals walked the Earth 30,000 years ago. The virus infects amoebas, but does not attack human or animal cells. But Professor Jean-Michel Claverie, from CNRS, said the exposure of permafrost to global warming and industrial exploration was now a “recipe for disaster”. Researchers are examining DNA from the frost to see what else might lurk within.

“Lord of the Rings” films and he reprised the role for Jackson’s “The Hobbit” trilogy, but Sean Connery turned down an offer to star in “Lord of the Rings.” The last time he appeared onscreen in 2003’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, had left him licking his wounds. Johnny Castle in “Dirty Dancing” In the classic film about a romance between dance instructor Johnny Castle and Baby Houseman, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey were the perfect pair. But another leading man almost snagged the lead male role, “Top Gun’s” Iceman - heartthrob Val Kilmer - was also considered for the role of Johnny in the 1987 hit movie. Neo in “The Matrix” Keanu Reeves scored a huge win after being cast as Neo in the science fiction hit film “The Matrix.” But Reeves initially had a little competition for the part, Scot Ewan McGregor was first cast at Neo but decided to turn down the film to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in “Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menance.” Jack Dawson in “Titanic” Leonardo DiCaprio struck gold when he was cast as the love interest of Kate Winslet in the mega hit “Titanic.” But had the studio had its way, Matthew McConaughey was the first choice for the role of Jack Dawson, king of the world.

Menzel has performed internationally, both in musicals and as herself in a concert tour. Other film and television credits include Enchanted, Ask the Dust, Glee, and Rent.

ET ‘Urban Legend’ Proven

i

n VidEo gAMing circles, gamers speak in hushed tones of a legendary game, so bad it brought a thriving video game manufacturer to its knees, so awful that, like the Ark of the Covenant it was hidden away for decades, but instead of in wooden crate inside an endless warehouse, it was buried forever in a landfill in new

Mexico…. until now

A dig at a New Mexico landfill site has proven the urban legend that the 1982 Atari ET videogame cartridge based on the famous Spielberg movie, was such a disaster Atari was forced to bury over a MILLION of the unsold cartridges in mass game graves. The game’s disastrous launch has been partly blamed for Atari’s decline and is widely regarded as the worst game ever made. But as famous as the legend is,

that was all it was until last weekend, when a major dig uncovered hundreds of copies of the notorious release. Some 200 gaming enthusiasts as well as Executives from Atari, which has changed hands several times since the burial gathered at the landfill site Alamogordo, New Mexico, to watch bulldozers dig through concrete-covered rubbish to find out whether the burial rumours were true. Spokesman for Atari , Kristen

Keller claimed no “corporate knowledge” about the Alamogordo burial, adding: “We’re just watching like everybody else.” The dig was carried out as part of a documentary by film director Zak Penn who had heard about a city official who was given a tip about the massive games dump by a landfill employee in 1983. Penn said: “I feel pretty relieved and psyched that they actually got to see something.”

After hours of searching, the games were found, and amazingly many copies still worked as makeshift gaming dens were assembled The ET game is one of the factors blamed for the decline of Atari and the collapse in the US of a multi-million dollar video game industry that did not bounce back for several years. Deputy editor at gaming website Kotaku Tina Amini said the game was unsuccessful because it was so riddled with bugs “it was practically broken”.

Long live the lyricist By Andy Briggs

“well i heard there was a secret chord, that david played and it pleased the lord but you don´t really care for music do you. And it goes like this, the forth the fifth the minor fall and the major lift, the baffled king composing hallelujah.” HALLELUJAH INDEED! For lyrics with substance...I remember (though not so much from my era but songs and artists I grew up listening to) when the words to songs were vague enough to make them magical, but not so vague you couldn´t make your own personal sense out of them. It is a dying art, it seems to me, to take words and move people with them emotionally. Poetry used to be for the masses and is now (in my opinion) confined within the educational walls of the upper echelon. Music has always provided a bridge between the working man down the pub and literature. One of mans greatest achievements is our ability to communicate in such a descriptive manner. Lyrics are an extension of this ability, a way to take a person on a journey without them moving a muscle! Taking all this into account I feel sad when I turn on my radio nowadays...lis-

tening to empty words on top of badly produced music. “jump in my hooptie hooptie hoop... I own that, and I ain´t payin no rent this month...I owe that. But f**k who you want and f**k who you like, thats our life there´s no end in sight, twinkle twinkle little star.” (Nicki Minaj, Starships) A A A A A A A A A A a a a r rrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhh!!! Who is buying and listening to this garbage? Nicki Minaj was one of 2012´s top selling artists, she made more than twenty million dollars in record sales and concert tickets, she has collagen in both lips, silicone in both breasts and both bum cheeks, enough peroxide in her hair to drown an elephant in and her contribution to the world of lyrics is “f**k who you want, f**k who you like” followed by the lyrics to a nursery rhyme composed by a young Mozart! Musicians are meant to be role models? I know few people will care as much as myself about the subject of lyrical content in modern music...but I urge you to care more! Hip Hop is a haven for badly written music. It completely lives up to it´s

stereotype of being predominantly about drugs, prostitution, violence and glamorising all three. Ironically it is a genre of music very closely related to poetry in the sense it uses word pattern to create its distinctive sound. Though I doubt you´d find Robert Burns listening to 50 cent. People who have an ability to speak to millions through their music should spread positive messages like Tracy Chapman, I ask any Hip Hop fans reading to listen to “I know I can” by Nas. It´s a song about encouraging young AfricanAmericans to aim high in life, the lyrics tell of a rich history where Greeks and Romans would travel to Africa to learn from great and famous black teachers...sound boring? Listen to it, it´s a crackin´ tune! Proving you don´t have to rap about cocaine and guns to be successful! In conclusion...next time you see Nicki Minaj throw an egg at her, next time you hear a 50 cent track, turn it off, next time you hear a Tracy Chapman track turn it up and fight for the lyrics you deserve to be listening to on your radio!

ASA are monitoring an iceberg bigger than Chicago which has broken off into the ocean in Antarctica.

Known as B31, the sheet of ice is one of the biggest on the planet measuring 255 square miles (660 sq km) and is about a third of a mile (500m) thick. The largest iceberg ever recorded was called B15 and had an area of 4,250 square miles (11,000 square kilometres) - about the size of Jamaica. It broke off Antarctica’s Ross Ice Shelf in March 2000 and still exists in several parts around the Antarctic. The space agency has been monitoring Antarctica’s Pine Island Glacier since a crack

was spotted in 2011, amid fears any iceberg could contribute to rising sea levels. B31 is not currently on any major shipping routes but with winter approaching in the area, it could become difficult to track. Grant Bigg, from the University of Sheffield, said in the NASA statement: “The iceberg is now well out of Pine Island Bay and will soon join the more general flow in the Southern Ocean. We are doing some research on local ocean currents to try to explain the motion properly. It has been surprising how there have been periods of almost no motion, interspersed with rapid flow.” An iceberg this big could take a year or more to melt.

Spotlight On Meson El Monasterio

T

o call Meson El Monasterio just a restaurant is understating the magnificence of the place right away. Situated behind the El Trompo shopping centre in Orotava, it takes a little over an hour to get there from Las Americas/Los Cristianos. Simply jump on the TF1, all the way up to the turn off for La Laguna and the North Airport, where we took exit 6, joining the TF2,keeping in the left lane and following signs for Puerto de la Cruz, we joined the TF5. Almost 30km later, take exit 36 for Los Realejos, 3rd exit at the roundabout, 1st exit at the next roundabout, it’s a slight left onto Camino Piedra Blanca, and then a slight right onto Calle Los Afligidos and you can’t miss it on your right.

As you turn into the venue it’s hard not to be impressed, we drove through the main gates and continued all the way up to the highest restaurant of the four contained within the monastery walls, El Mirador. The view from the dining area is quite simply stunning, overlooking the valley of La Orotava and the barrancos of La Esperanza forest, day or night it’s quite breath-taking. Unfortunately on Tuesday this restaurant is closed so although we could enjoy the view, we wouldn’t be eating here. We continued past the restaurant and at the end of the car park, there was a footpath to the top of the hill, which the sign told us was roughly a 30 minute walk to the top of the hill and a small chapel with even better views. A few minutes up the footpath is a gate to the left which leads to an elaborate water flow system and the grounds and gardens, including an enclosure containing, ducks, geese, chickens, roosters and peacocks. It wasn’t clear whether the ducks and chickens were intended as pets and as an attraction for visitors-or if they

eventually made it to the dinner table!! Anyway as well as the ones in the enclosure many other birds roamed around the restaurants freely-much to the delight of several visiting children and my animal loving wife!! As you can gather from it’s name Meson El Monasterio was originally,in the 18th century,a sacred monastery and home to many monks. It became an eating establishment in the 80’s and has thrived under the management of the Columbus company. As well as specialising in Spanish cuisine, delights such as roast duck, suckling pig,and international dishes like seafood and various types of fondue. The main restaurant El Comedor Principal, has several sections, the confessionary, cave room, bodega and two terraces with an open style kitchen where you can see the meats, fresh and cured, and watch the experts cooking your meals. As well as preparing beautiful dinners, the complex is open for champagne breakfasts at the mirador, lunches and it is a popular wedding venue too!

“Friends” reunion is “not gonna Happen” Says Monica f oRMER “fRiEndS” star Courteney Cox has put to rest all those rumours of a movie version of the TV phenomenon during an interview on “The late Show” Monday when david letterman was the latest to ask the question -- will there be a “friends” reunion?

Almost 30 years later, a sequel to the classic 1985 movie The Goonies based around a new story from original writer, producer and second unit director, Steven Spielberg, could finally happen! Goonies director Richard Donner at first said “What’s The Goonies?” When initially asked about the follow-up, but did let slip that “of course” Mr. Spielberg is involved. Donner said: “Hopefully we’re going to get this done, period, Steven came up with the idea of doing a sequel after 30 years. You don’t do it without him. We’ve been trying for a long time, then he came up with another storyline and he’s right on.” When asked if any of the film’s original cast would appear in the sequel — which boasted future stars Josh Brolin, Sean Astin and Corey Feldman — Donner said, “God knows, it’s up to them. If they have any sense they will; if they don’t, they won’t.” So, better start practicing the truffle shuffle!

It’s not gonna happen.” Matthew Perry who played Chandler Bing shot down the idea of a reunion as well, and the show’s creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane echoed his sentiments a few weeks later. Kauffman told EW: “The show is over. What was at the heart of the show is done, people say

they want it, and the more that we say it’s a bad idea, people [disagree]. But I think if we actually gave it to people, there would be such backlash.” When Letterman mentioned the idea of a movie, the “Cougar Town” star pointed out another problem: “We did the whole show on a sound stage in Monica’s apartment. So, what would we even do?” Sorry “Friends” fanatics, you’ll have to wait a few more years until the show’s stars’ careers start to slide before they may have a change of heart!

prince promises new album and remasters A fTER MoRE than 20 years Prince has come to an agreement with warner Bros. Records. The artist famously wrote “slave” on his face to protest his contract with the company, but now under the new partnership, Warners will release previously unheard material and a digitally remastered, deluxe 30th anniversary edition of his 1984 soundtrack to Purple Rain with more projects in the works. In 1992, Prince signed a lucrative deal with Warner Bros, but when the label would not put out his music at the pace he wanted, he changed his name to an unpronounceable “love symbol” and scrawled the word “slave” on his face. Warner Bros. then dropped its distribution deal with Prince’s Paisley Park, putting it out of business. The Artist, as he was then known, put out his single “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” on an indie, which Warner allowed and subsequently put out records culled from the Artist’s vaults, releasing albums under both the Prince name and symbol. By 1996, the Artist had secured a new distribution deal with Warner rival Capitol and put out the triple-CD Emancipation. He told Rolling Stone in 1996: “People think I’m a crazy fool for writing ‘slave’ on my face, but if I can’t do what I want to do, what am I? When you stop a man from dreaming, he becomes a slave. That’s where I was. I don’t own Prince’s music. If you don’t own your masters, your master owns you.” This new agreement means Prince now has

ownership and control over the master recordings of his Warner Bros. catalog, a Warner Bros. press release said: “The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Everyone at Warner Bros. Records is delighted to be working with Prince once again: he is one of the world’s biggest stars and a truly unique talent. We are also very excited about the release of new and remastered music from one of his greatest masterpieces.” The artist commented: “A brand-new studio album is on the way and both Warner Bros. Records and Eye are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship.” Prince has been teasing a new album for a while now, leaking new music via Twitter like “Da Bourgeoisie” and, in a rare (and funny) television appearance on Arsenio, “FunkNRoll.” In February, he played himself on an episode of The New Girl, and the next month, he issued a single of the tune he sang on the show, a duet with the TV show’s Zooey Deschanel titled “FallInLove2Nite.” He also debuted songs from an album titled Plectrumelectrum, which was recorded with his all-female backing band 3rd Eye Girl, in the wee hours of a February morning in a New York club. Prince told Rolling Stone in March: “No one can play like this band, people are going to try, but they won’t be able to.” adding that the group played the album live, “no punch-ins,” and that they recorded until they got the take they wanted.

Ew yoRKERS already spoiled for choice when it comes to what to have at lunch can now order a grilled cheese sandwich, which is delivered by parachute from above!

Australian eatery Jafflechutes (“jaffle” is the Aussie term for grilled cheese) came up with the alternative delivery system and after a successful crowd-funding cam-

paign in Melbourne, the “first float-down eatery” is slated to debut in the Big Apple, although an official launch date has yet to be announced. Patrons pay $5-$6 for their flying sandwiches via PayPal, then set up a delivery time and stand in a designated area on the street marked with an “X.” An employee then launches the wrapped-up sandwich down into the customers’ welcoming hands. If the sandwich gets stuck somewhere on the jour-

ney, Jafflechutes will make another. Adam Grant, one of the creators of the concept said: “We stumbled into doing jafflechutes after a weekend at a countryside Airbnb rental without electricity or Internet. Without the distraction of YouTube and video games, we spent the night talking about crazy business ideas, and by morning we had created Melbourne’s first float-down eatery.” Coming soon… Watermelon Catapults!

The pest splatter, who is 80 years old, has been swatting them for the last 15 years and she does about eight hours a day in a community in Eastern China. She was bored with retirement and decided to do something useful for the community and swatting flies was what she chose to do. The Chinese press call her a heroine and one newspaper declared that flies were an enemy to the public. I am sure that she thinks she is doing a good job but it all seems a bit pointless to me!

Super Squid Surfaces In antarctic

T

hE fiRST EXAMPlE of a virtually intact Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni has been retrieved from the surface of the ocean has been caught in Antarctic waters. Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni or Colossal Squid, was first identified in 1925 after two arms were recovered from a sperm whale’s stomach. new Zealand squid expert and senior research fellow at Auckland uni-

versity of Technology, dr Steve o’Shea said:

“All we knew prior to this specimen coming through was that this animal lived in the abyss down in Antarctica. Now we know that it is moving right through the water column, right up to the very surface and it grows to a spectacular size. It’s been known since 1925, but no one really paid any attention to it. Now we can say that it attains a size larger than the giant squid. Giant squid is no longer the largest squid that’s out there. We’ve got something that’s even larger, and not just larger but an order of magnitude meaner.”

Question 1: What was Walter Diemer’s toungue-in-cheek inflatable invention of 1928?

Question 2: Who did Gianluca Vialli replace at Chelsea? Question 3: What are there about 240 of to each square kilometre of the UK?

Question 4: Who put on 40 pounds for his role in Cop Land? Question 5: Who did Tony Blair describe as “The best of British” at her golden wedding lunch?

Question 6: Who painted “Apparition of Face” and “Fruit-Dish on a Beach”?

Question 7: Where are the two Rovers which are the world’s most expensive used cars at an original cost of $6million (dollars) each?

Question 8: Which sport’s minimum height requirement did Koji Harada try to reach by having a silicone implant in his scalp?

Question 9: Which model, known as the Streatham Sex Bomb, became Nelson Mandela’s “honorary granddaughter”?

Question 10: What legal phrase describes any natural phenomenon which, without human intervention, directly causes an accident?

Question 11: What job was Cherie Blair starting on the day she was fined 10 pounds for not having a train ticket?

There have only ever been six specimens of this squid recovered: five have come from the stomachs of sperm whales and the sixth was caught in a trawl net at a depth of 2,000 to 2,200 metres This squid has one of the largest beaks known of any squid and also has unique swivelling hooks on the clubs at the ends of its tentacles. This combination allows it to attack fish as large as the Patagonian toothfish and probably to also attempt to maul sperm whales. “When this animal was alive, it really has to be one of the most frightening predators

out there. It’s without parallel in the oceans,” said Dr O’Shea, whose work is sponsored by Discovery Channel. “It’s only half to two-thirds grown, so it grows up to four metres in mantle length.” By comparison, the mantle of the giant squid, Architeuthis dux, is not known to attain more than 2.25 metres. “This animal, armed as it is with the hooks and the beak that it has, not only is colossal in size but is going to be a phenomenal predator and something you are not going to want to meet in the water.”

HoMe AnD gArDening By Linda Barratt

y

ou don’T hAVE to be a pro to create yourself a one of a kind wall art for your home or garden. with a marker pen or paint brush in hand you could doodle to your heart’s content. Squiggle and scrawl, write a favourite poem, song, lyrics or quotes. you could even try embroidering them if you feel inclined. There’s cutting and shaping differing veggies and using paint to make up your own prints on canvas or cloth. Maybe even have a go making a block colour collage choosing a palette of colours or toning shades of the same hue. Get yourself wrapped up in embellishing the corners of a flat framed canvas using various widths of wrapped twine, ribbons and fabrics. Mixing or matching the corners for differing interest. Make use of such embellishments to make up your wall art by simply glueing them to your chosen surface. There are so many useable items we can find out there, or discarded bits and pieces around our homes, even on the street, beach countryside and by the rubbish bins waiting to be revived by our imaginations. Make your art sparkle with the use of diamantes and small colourful stones or pebbles. Make use of small pieces of driftwood to adhere to your art upon which to place battery operated tealights to give a little glow within your home. Use fragrant or anti-bug candles if you decide to make use of an outside wall upon which to create your art. Don’t forget you could also use twinkly string lights, especially professional looking if you use a canvas or piece of wood as your base choice, and puncture or drill small holes into it through which you can poke through individual fairy bulbs. A simple marker pen or paint drawn tree on canvas or wood with lights placed through the holes from the back is just one suggestion. Using your own ideas and imagination I am sure would produce very many more wild and wonderful ideas for lighting up your own art works. Use string and wood to create a design or picture by using small nails tacked into your wooden surface to create the bends and turns, making sure to keep the string taught at all times. Try using coloured string or threads for effect too. Coloured buttons, yes ladies we all have them stashed in a jar box or tin somewhere in our homes, just in case of emergencies. Try threading string through them using various size combinations. Then simply knot the string at the rear of the canvas. Why not use beads or pieces of long forsaken jewellery still

wonderful wall art!

kept at the back of your drawers along with reluctance and memories to part with them? If they won’t string then glue them on. Commemorate milestones and dates. Not confident with your own freehand then use stencils. Keep your vacation memories fresh. Use travel documents, flight tickets and maybe a small map of this treasured place to adhere to canvas or sacking cloth pulled taught over a homemade frame. To give your map or any other paper documents an old and weathered look soak in extra strong coffee or tea for an hour and then carefully hang or lay on a towel or teacloth to completely dry out before adhering. Should you have a favourite picture or photo get it blown up. Cut into vertical or horizontal strips and adhere to your chosen backing or canvas at staged intervals or use separate canvases to create an expanded portrait. Try downloading prints to make an expanse of repetitive block designs. Outdoors make use of bleak walls and fencing by using paints to create big and bold pattern and designs etc. Put those birds outside by using thicker twigs or branches and paint those birds onto the wall as though sitting within the branches. Ok so you’re as hopeless as me at drawing a bird ...then opposite the effect. Paint a tree and buy birds to adhere to the wall. Make use again of string lighting... could use solar ones too. Put up shelves for candles, plants etc to combine within your art. Make use of thin aluminium sheeting to cut and create flowers and designs to fasten to your walls or fencing. Printed or painted fabrics can be hung by wires threaded through top and bottom to give a more cheerful effect to your chosen area. To get creative nail that old warn out watering can to the wall and fill it with painted flowers onto your wall. Maybe you have an old bike that saw you through miles and hours of pleasure and scenery-then don’t throw it onto the scrap heap...hammer it up there. Thread lights through the spokes and give it life with a bit of multi-coloured painting or scenic backdrop. Create your own lasting memories from scrap, imagination and a little time, by curving and bending your own thoughts of creativity.

Wi-Fi Onesies!

Aquarius 20 January to 18 February

Opportunities for romance, business, and anything else you can think of could be there for you this week. Researching your options by surfing online could result in rich pickings. Try not to be swayed by the midweek Full Moon in Scorpio concerning an important career move or goal. Intense energies could cause you to doubt your motives - or someone else’s. Reflect carefully before you make any important decisions. Later, the chance to do business in a fun, upbeat environment can be very enjoyable.

Pisces 19 February to 20 March

Home and family matters seem positive, as upbeat transits may coincide with family get-togethers or celebrations. You might want to splurge on items for your home. A spontaneous decision to upgrade the decor could have you considering paint, carpets, or curtains. However, it also pays to monitor your spending and stick to a sensible budget. Spending without thinking could cause unnecessary anxiety later. The rest of the week brings a chance for good times that can generate happy memories.

Aries 21 March to 19 April

The week continues to be very sociable and mainly positive. Monday brings a chance to connect with others to brainstorm, get feedback, and interact for romance or business purposes. Take it easy around midweek, when a Full Moon in Scorpio could arouse passions and intense feelings. You might be tempted to vent, but it might be wiser not to. As of Thursday, opportunities for spontaneous meetings, instant attractions, and fun times can give you a boost.

Taurus 20 April to 20 May

You might want to invest in improving your health and overall wellness by purchasing some exercise equipment or a gym membership. Midweek could have a deep and profound resonance, as the Moon in Scorpio can bring hidden feelings into the open. Passion, jealousy, anger, and just about any other intense emotion could show up in key interactions, so mind how you go. Pay attention to intuitive insights about how to improve your finances. It could save you time and money.

gemini 21 May to 21 June

Your curiosity could peak, spurring creative ideas or enticing you to consider dating if you’ve been out of the loop for a while. You’re in your element now and eager to enjoy the pleasures of life. You might want to lighten your schedule around the midweek Full Moon in Scorpio, as feelings may be running high. It would help to ease off the accelerator and go with the flow. Later, social opportunities look especially encouraging, with a chance for a delightful meeting.

Cancer 22 June to 22 July

Though creative conflict still appears in your life, you might be motivated to start on an idea you’ve been mulling over for some time. Don’t let the Full Moon in your creative sector keep you from moving ahead. It’s in Scorpio, so fear or doubt could assail you right when you need confidence and enthusiasm in order to get ahead. Fortunately, the rest of the week provides just that. Success happens when you take that first baby step and keep going.

uTCh fAShion designer Borre Akkersdijk has designed a prototype garment that turns the wearer into a wi-fi hotspot.

Akkersdijk began experimenting on wearable technology at his fashion label, ByBorre, which is based in an old biscuit factory in Amsterdam with a circular knitting machine in 2009, when he knitted two layers of fine cotton thread enveloping a synthetic fibre to create a wi-

fi enabled onesie. Since then he has improved the technique further by running copper wire through the material during the manufacturing process which can be hooked up to chips and connectivity devices, and he has created two prototype outfits called BB.Suits with wi-fi, Bluetooth and GPS capabilities and tested the suit at a technology festival, using it to broadcast his location on Google Maps. He said: “The copper goes in during the manufacturing process, and big spots are left open

within the design so we can put chips and stuff in. Wearable technology is really in the beginning stage, and at the moment there are no chips that can be washed.” Unfortunately due to limitations with current chip technology and the fact that the garment is bulky because batteries and processor boards are hidden in the BB.Suit’s pockets- it won’t be available in shops any time soon. ByBorre is researching ways to improve the use of wearable technology.

‘Young’ Blood rejuvenates aging Mice

Leo 23 July to 22 August

Conversations lead to productive encounters, collaboration, and opportunities to get involved in creative projects. Take it easy on Wednesday, as intense feelings could stir up issues at home. This isn’t the time to make snap decisions or say anything you could regret later. The rest of the week seems delightfully upbeat, bringing encounters that inspire and delight. Sizzling chemistry may endear you to someone very quickly on Thursday. The weekend brings a chance for all-out indulgence.

Virgo 23 August to 22 September

Business deals and career opportunities may show up this week, enhancing your prospects if you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone. Connecting with key people, researching options, and gathering information can help you reach an important goal. However, an emotional surge may cloud thoughts midweek. Avoid making important decisions at that time. Wait a day or so to feel calmer and more collected for best results. There’s also a chance of a small windfall - enough to put a smile on your face!

libra 23 September to 23 October

Although relationships could be a bit of a challenge, there’s also plenty of sizzle showing up in your social life. Opportunities to explore groups or move in new circles could be a revelation. Try to avoid splurging at the time of the midweek Full Moon, even if it does help you feel better. Chances are you’ll regret it the next day. Still, one or two small luxuries could boost your mood. Romance can happen if you’re willing to move outside your comfort zone and seek adventure.

Scorpio 24 October to 21 November

You may be thinking about life’s deeper issues, as a focus on spiritual and emotional matters could encourage a period of reflection. Perhaps what you really want is for harmony and balance to pervade your everyday existence. Don’t let the Full Moon in Scorpio throw you off. Although powerful emotions may arise, simply feeling them can help them dissipate. If you’ve been considering therapy or counseling, this might be a good time to find a suitable person.

Sagittarius 22 November to 21 December

You seem to be on a roll, especially as your social life and love life are concerned. Interactions with many people can be the catalyst to some exciting things happening for you. Be willing to let your curiosity lead the way and more exciting things will come to you. Also, opportunities for romance seem particularly appealing. Whether you’re in a long-term relationship or looking for love, the flame of passion could be kindled in the days ahead. The weekend looks particularly fun and indulgent.

Capricorn 22 december to 19 January

You may be curious to explore options for new contracts, jobs, and work in general. With Mercury in Gemini and making some spectacular aspects this week, it’s a good time to advertise your skills and services, apply for interviews, and get things up and running in general. There is also a lot happening on the home front, with the chance of a surprise visitor showing up. Socializing and home entertainment can be fun and delightful, with plenty to anticipate.

EEMS liKE VAMPiRES may be onto something after all.

Mickey Mouse is 86 this year, and if he is starting to look his age against all the shiny new Pixar youngsters, scientists may have found just the tonic: the blood of younger mice. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco found that older mice got stronger, exercised longer and performed better mentally after they were injected with blood from young mice, or even just with a substance that’s more abundant in younger blood. This evidence could one day lead to a way to treat some infirmities of old age in people, however Saul Villeda of, an author of one of three papers published online Sunday by the journals Nature Medicine and Science was quick to issue a warning:

“Don’t try this at home!” Working with mice that were roughly the equivalent of people in their 20s and 60s, researchers repeatedly injected the older mice with blood from either the younger animals or other aged mice. Those that got the young blood did better in learning and memory tests than the mice given the older blood. Villeda said the researchers are trying to figure out what’s in the young blood that made the difference. The two other papers, from Harvard University, focused on a substance that is more abundant in the blood of younger mice than old. That protein, called GDF11, is also found in human blood and its concentration also appears to decline with age,on average, aging mice that got injections of it showed greater grip strength and more endurance on a treadmill than untreated mice. The Harvard scientists also found that exposing older mice to the blood of younger mice produced more blood vessels and blood flow in the brain. Injections of GDF11 had a similar effect and those results suggest further work may lead to a way to treat agerelated mental decline and perhaps dementia in people.

sliced 120g Belly Pork, cut into thin strips (or smoked bacon if you prefer)

METhod:

i PRE-hEAT ThE oVEn to 1 60°C/Gas 3. Pour the wine into a saucepan and boil until reduced by ½. Trim the beef and cut into 3cm cubes, then dust with the flour. Heat a frying pan until very hot, add a dash of oil and brown the beef on all sides (you may need to do this in batches). Remove the beef and discard the oil. Add 1 tbsp. clean oil to the pan. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until golden and caramelised. Return the meat to the pan. Add the brandy and the reduced wine. Simmer for 2-3 mins. Transfer to a flame-proof casserole dish, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and add the herbs and stock. Bring to a simmer, skim off any surface scum and cover loosely with a lid or foil. Place in the oven and cook for 1 ½-2 hrs. or until the meat is tender. Leave to cool, then remove the meat from the dish and set aside. Skim off any fat, then pass the liquid through a sieve into a pan. Boil until it thickens to a sauce, and then add the meat.

Cover and chill until needed. To make the garnish, melt 1 tbsp. of the butter in a pan. Add the onions, 2tbsp of the sauce from the beef and 4tbsp water. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, and braise the onions until shiny and cooked through. Put the carrots in a pan, just cover with water and add most of the rest of the butter. Season and bring to a gentle boil, then cook until almost all the liquid has evaporated and the carrots are tender and shiny with butter. Meanwhile, brown the Belly Pork in a frying pan. Sauté the mushrooms in the remaining butter until cooked. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and add a little lemon juice. Meanwhile, reheat the boeuf bourguignon on the hob. Add the cold butter to enrich and shine the sauce, then garnish with the onions, carrots, bacon and mushrooms.

Hellooo Sparklettes!

w

Ell… it’s been a while since we’ve done this isn’t it??? Missed me??? So, let’s get straight on with it shall we??? During our extended break Vivo played host to “Soul in the Sun”… and who did I spot shuffling away to the best in northern soul on the dance floor??? Only blimming Annie Styles, Harry from 1D’s mum!!! I thought she was dancing at first, but it turns out she’d just had too many sambucas!!! Speaking of the boys from One Direction, they were recently spotted at Cardington Sheds, Bedfordshire, which is my neck of the woods. The

sheds were built during the First World War for Airship construction, and was where the Goodyear Blimps were built, now it’s a film studio, all three Batman movies were filmed there and now 1D are making their latest video… quite appropriate as some people (but not me) say they are just a load of hot air!!! Speaking of hot… Charlie Clapham, one of the Roscoe brothers currently causing havoc in Channel 4’s “Hollyoaks”, has been over in Tenerife, he’s easily recognized by his chest tattoo… hope that’s not a hotel bedsheet Charlie!!! Sadly, a British legend, actor Bob Hoskins has died of pneumonia aged 71. Bob was

most famous for his roles in “The Long Good Friday” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, rest in peace Bob, you were a true gentleman. Finally as you may have read on page 5, we held a charity event for “Help The Heroes” recently at Vivo and a great day was had by all, everyone worked very hard and almost 2400 euros was raised on the day alone, but to help raise the total even further I offered to give 10% of the amount raised that day to this very important charity organization…well, I’d better get off and do some work…I need to earn some money now!!! So until next time…Keeep smiling!!!

H

ere are the cars of the future, dubbed “the Fantastic Four” that will change the shape of motoring to come, as seen at the Geneva Motor Show. Maserati’s Alfieri is a slick 2+2 with a six-speed sequential gearbox kicking out 460 horses and weighing less than a Ford Mondeo, expect a top speed of over 200mph. Honda claims its new Civic Type-R concept is a “road-

legal racing car”. The VW T-Roc compactSUV concept, should go into production in 2017 and will have cameras in the ¬headlights and rear lamps and a targa roof. The Swiss Quant’s electric e-Sportlimousine has four electric motors producing 643hp with gull-wing doors and the looks of a supercar. Its NanoFlowcell batteries have five times the range and performance of conventional lithium-ion power packs.

one:

“Owning an electric car is no longer a dream or an inconvenience. Manufacturers are turning to this new technology to help motorists make their everyday journeys green and clean. This major investment is there to make driving an electric car affordable, convenient, and free from anxiety about the battery running out. But it’s also about creating a culture change in our towns and cities so that driving a greener vehicle is a no-brainer for most drivers.” Local authorities will be able to bid for a share of £35  million in government

funding if they come up with plans to encourage green travel, such as offering free parking and the freedom to drive in bus lanes. By the end of this year every motorway service station is to have a charging point that can power a car for a 100-mile journey in 20 minutes with 500 more chargers planned in the next year. The spending, from 2015 to 2020, will cut carbon emissions and create jobs, said Mr Clegg. It is believed that car owners are put off from buying electric by “range anxiety” – a fear they will be stranded

if the car’s battery runs flat. Civil servants blame shows like Top Gear for the lack of confidence in the green vehicles. The perks will not apply to owners of hybrid cars that run on a combination of petrol and electricity. Drivers of ultra-low emissions vehicles (ULEVs) are exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge. They are also eligible for a £5,000 grant to offset the higher cost of an electric vehicle.

ritish manufacturers Trident have launched a sports car that runs on chip fat oil! The company claim its Iceni model is the world’s most fuel efficient sports car that not only exceeds speeds of 190mph - it is said to be capable of driving from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back on a single tank of cooking oil, thats2,000 miles on one tank of fuel!

Three models the Iceni Magna, Convertible and Venturer estate run on Conventional diesel or pure biodiesel, such as cooking oil, virgin rapeseed, linseed palm, soya bean oil, kerosene

and paraffin. The engine also uses ‘torque multiplication technology’ for speed and fuel efficiency. Trident’s patented technology – a unique way of utilising torque multiplication to improve performance and efficiency increases fuel efficiency by up to 20 per cent. Phil Bevan, Co-founder of the Norfolk-based firm and designer of the incredible car said: ‘The Trident cars deliver incredible speed and performance combined with outstanding fuel efficiency, achieved through our unique torque multiplication technology,’ said Phil Bevan, designer and founder of Trident. It is widely believed horsepower delivers power, speed and fuel effi-

ciency, but it is torque that matters and ‘gets you off the line quickly.’ He added that if the owner of one of his cars invested in refinery equipment - at a cost of £1,800 - they could make approximately 300litres of fuel a day by collecting used cooking oil from restaurants. The models distinctive look is reminiscent of older sports cars, each model has independent controls for each car seat and even the car’s roof, meaning that a passenger can remain under cover even if the driver wants the roof down. Prices start at £96,000 ($161,578) for the most basic version.

Arsene Wenger’s side will be hoping to win their first trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2005, having reached the final by beating Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton before winning a nerveshredding penalty shoot-out against Wigan in the semi. United 5-3 at Wembley in the semi-final. It’s the furthest the club has got in the competition since a semi-final knockout by Arsenal in 1930, and coincidentally the Gunners’ Champions League qualification means the Tigers already have a place in next season’s Europa League, whether they win the cup or not. Joining Adrian in the studio for both games are pundits Lee Dixon and Roy Keane, while commentary comes from Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend, with Gabriel Clarke reporting from pitchside.

ormer England international gary lineker says Ross Barkley reminds him of his old international team-mate Paul gascoigne and believes the Everton midfielder could be a key player for Roy hodgson at the world Cup following his excellent Premier league form

Lineker, who scored 48 goals in 80 international appearances, believes manager Roy Hodgson should put faith in the younger members of his squad at the 2014 World Cup - particularly Barkley: “I see things in Barkley’s game, in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Like Gazza he can go past people. He’s incredibly strong. He’s got a similar stature, got amazing ability and will score amazing goals like Gazza. On the defensive side he’s slightly lacking in terms of tactical nous, but if you play him in a certain position that wouldn’t necessarily be that important.”

Barkley is one of a number of players in England’s squad with a relative lack of experience Lineker added: “I think a good percentage of them (the younger players) will start, I think he (Roy Hodgson) knows that’s his best chance, rather than trying the ones that have been there, seen that, done it.” Gazza himself was taken to hospital recently with a suspected broken arm after making a special guest appearance in a ‘staff match’ to play football again at Newcastle United. The star was playing alongside coaches, including fellow retired England international Peter Beardsley, when he sustained the injury. He was treated in the city’s Royal Victoria Infirmary at St James’ Park. Paul Gascoine, who has publically battled a drink and drug addiction was seen looking happy and relaxed during the game. Paul, who turns 47 later this month had travelled back to Tyneside to visit his family and friends. A source

said: “Gazza was a surprise for the staff playing in the game, he was a special guest organised by Peter Beardsley and he looked well, fit and tanned when he turned up with his family. He really enjoyed the game and it was great to see him back. But he sustained an injury and it looked like he had broken his arm. He went from the ground to the nearest hospital, and it was just bad luck really. Obviously everyone hopes he is well, and wishes him a speedy recovery.” The former England player had recently joked with fans on Twitter that a recent run of bad luck was due to 13 in the year, 2013 began with him nearly dying in rehab in the States, saw him fall off the wagon several times after drying out and even drunkenly assaulting a railway worker, but he has looked to be in good health in recent months. The ex-England, Spurs and Rangers star now has regular treatment from a rehab centre close to his home in Bournemouth.

“anxiety Disorder” Could explain pistorius Shooting

P

RofESSoR MERRyll VoRSTER, a forensic psychiatrist from wits university in Johannesburg, said the combined amputation of Pistorius’ legs as an infant, his family’s heightened fear of crime, his parents’ divorce, his mother’s death when he was 14 and genetic factors means he suffers from an anxiety disorder that would have made him react more extremely to a perceived threat. The court also heard from the neighbor of Oscar Pistorius, who stated that the athlete was ‘broken’ when he found him with his fatally-injured girlfriend in his arms. Johan Stander was one of the first people Pistorius spoke to after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. As the Blade Runner’s murder trial resumed following a two-week break, Stander who was the administrator of the gated community where Pistorius lived, appeared to back up Pistorius’ story that he shot Miss Steenkamp by mistake. The runner called Mr. Stander in the minutes after the shooting at his home in the early hours of Valentine’s Day last year. Giving evidence for the defence, he said he a phone call at 3.19am on February 14th form the defendant saying: “Please, please, please come to my house. I shot Reeva. I thought she was an intruder. Please, please come quick.” Stander and his daughter then drove to Pistorius’ house, where they found him with fatally-injured Reeva in his arms. Mr Stander said:

“He was really crying, he was in pain, he asked us to please assist him to put Reeva in the car and take her to the hospital. He was broken; he was screaming; he was crying; he was praying. [I could see] his commitment to save the young lady’s life. He begged her to stay with him, begged God to keep her alive. I saw the truth that morning. I saw it and I feel it.” Stander’s daughter, Carice Viljoen, said in the early hours of February 14th she heard a man’s voice shouting “help, help, help”. She also described the scene at the athlete’s house, saying “I just saw blood everywhere.” Mrs Viljoen said, Pistorius was praying to God and “pleading with Reeva as well to please stay with him. He was saying ‘just stay with me my love, stay with me’.” When Mrs Viljoean asked him what had happened, he also told her: “I thought she was an intruder.” Oscar Pistorius waits to see if he will be sent for mental evaluation, as the trial for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp continues.

luis Suarez 2014 Footballer of the Year

T

hE fooTBAll writers’ Association has announced luis Suarez as footballer of the year for 2014, following up his PfA Player of the year award. The news was revealed on the fwA official website, the striker’s liverpool teammate, Steven gerrard, finished as runner-up for the accolade. The uruguayan international has scored 30 goals in 36 games so far this term, helping push the Reds into serious title contention, despite missing the first five games of the campaign through suspension.

FWA chairman Andy Dunn, said in a statement: “Those members who have been fortunate

enough to be working at a match involving Luis Suarez have witnessed an astonishing talent first-hand. Tireless endeavour allied to extraordinary imagination makes an irresistible combination. Add ingenious, impudent finishing and you have a footballer who truly quickens the pulse. Luis is a remarkable gifted addition to the long and distinguished list of winners of our award.” FWA member Richard Buxton said: “This latest award serves as yet another reminder of how the Uruguayan international has reformed of late, going from a controversial figure in the Premier League to one of its most consistently dazzling entertainers.” Suarez took 52 percent of the overall vote, per the FWA’s announcement, while Gerrard and Yaya Toure were second and third, respectively. Suarez was awarded at a ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel on May 15.

Villarreal have now been fined 12,000 euros by the Spanish football federation but the Spanish government’s anti-violence commission has said it will appeal for a heavier punishment given the “seriousness” of the incident. As Spanish football tries to clean up the game’s image, that aim was not helped by allegations from Levante’s Senegal midfielder Papakouly Diop who complained of racist abuse by visiting Atlético Madrid supporters. Diop condemned Atletico Madrid fans for making monkey chants at him during his team’s shock 2-0 win over the La Liga leaders. “We have accepted the 12,000 euro fine,” a Villarreal spokesman told Reuters. “The federation were though pleased with the quick and positive action that the club took by identifying the fan.” But with the general consensus being that the fine was ridiculously low and that Spanish football was “sweeping racism in football under the carpet, a new twist in the tale has occurred, Alves has now called for the banana-thrower who sparked the global anti-racist uproar to be given his job back. Alves told Catalan radio RAC 1 in an interview: “My only concern is that the kid lost his job and I don’t want that. I don’t want to hurt anyone. He made a joke and it caused an uproar. I ask that they give him his job back.” Alves said he did not want to give the impression that the whole of Spain is racist. “It is not something that has just happened now. I don’t want to generalise, to say Spain is racist. I am saying there is racism in Spain. I have been here 11 years and in those 11 years it’s been the same, people call me a monkey,” he said. It seems we may be witnessing the aftereffects of that banana for some time yet.

w

e’ll pick up points at Barça to become champions” was a bold statement by Atlético Madrid skipper gabi admitted that nerves had a part to play in the final stretch of the game against Málaga given that one goal would have seen them crowned champions in front of their own fans. The draw means now they have to get something at the Camp nou on the final day of the sea-

son to clinch the title. “At the end we were desperate because we knew the result in Barcelona. we’ll pick up points in the Camp nou to become champions.” Barça keep on trying their luck, and successfully, despite their apparent suicide mission and mediocre performances – Barça have more lives than a cat, more than they deserve, anyhow. A fact that reflects as badly on their rivals as it does on Barça. Against Elche, they needed a win to put matters back into their own hands on the final day of the season,

but Martino’s men had another off-day, and were fair to middling, without ambition or any trace of spark or genius. A game that ended in a nil-nil draw (the worst kind), and a game that gave up on talent to put matters into destiny’s hands, destiny that once again has been very generous to the Barça cause, handing them yet another chance of glory. (www.as.es) It’s going to be a stonking finish to La Liga, but who takes the trophy….. I predict Atletico Madrid and also for the Champions League too.

EVER HEARD OF EXTREME IRONING? Me neither, but If you find household chores a bore, extreme ironing might be the sport for you. Supposedly invented in the 1990s by a Leicester man (Mr. Edi-

tor, any comments?), the sport sees participants iron their clothes everywhere from the middle of motorways to under the sea.

i

n a four horse race this season in Tercera division (Spanish Third) group 12, it was Atletico granadilla who took the title by a solitary point from high flying Cd Marino. Mensajero of the island of La Palma taking third spot, boasting the stingiest defense of this term, and a well done to CD Tenerife B, who claims the fourth playoff place after another

great season. It’s all about the playoffs now, for these four teams who have pretty much bossed this league from the start. Tough times ahead for the three Tenerife teams, as no doubt they will be facing each other again, hopefully for CD Marino they have had the better in the head to heads, taking six points from Granadilla, three points from Mensajero and four point from CD Tenerife. The play-offs will be: Mal-

lorca B v ATL. GRANADILLA, Sanse v CD MARINO, Rayo Cantabria v Mensajero, CD TENERIFE B v Cerceda. Games to be played 17/18th May 2014, and 24/25th May 2014. Watch this space…. On a Personal note a massive well done to Jordan Astley and his new club Valle San Lorenzo on gaining straight promotion to Regional Preferente League.

Hamilton wins a heart-stopper in Spain to make it four in a row

L

ewis Hamilton is in incredible form winning his fourth consecutive F1 Race, and for the first time in nine attempts at the Spanish Grand Prix. This now gives Hamilton a 3 point lead in the driver’s championship. It was not as simple as that though as the Briton led from start to finish winning a tense battle with team mate Nico Rosberg, they were on their own as the rest of the field was left in their tracks. Redbull’s Daniel Ricciardo was third and team-mate Sebastian Vettel was fourth. In fairness the current world champion produced a superb effort from 15th place on the grid to get up to 4th. Mercedes team strategies were again spot-on but little did Hamilton & Rosberg know what each other’s tactics were. Mercedes split tyre strategies just like in Bahrain two races ago, putting Rosberg on ‘hard’ tyres whereas Hamilton was fitted

with ‘medium’. The point being Hamilton was told to keep the four-second gap between Rosberg and himself, while Rosberg was told to get the margin down to two seconds if he wanted to win the race. It could have gone sour for Hamilton as his final pit stop on lap 43, for the fitting of ‘hard’ tyres despite a delay in fitting a rear wheel, he was comfortable 4.8 seconds of Rosberg who himself pitted two laps later for ‘medium’ tyres. The final stint was close enough though and Rosberg on the attack got close enough to engage his DRS overtaking aid as they screamed towards the penultimate lap, but Nico could not get past Lewis. Hamilton even lapped Raikkonen as they headed down the straight into the final lap but was able to retain the lead. “I wasn’t fast enough really today,” said Hamilton. “Nico was quicker. I had to rely on my engineers to tell me where I could

find time and what the gap was. “One more lap and I would have been close enough to give it a good go,” said Rosberg. “I’m a bit gutted, but still second place and in a good position in the championship. There are many races to go.” Behind the dominant Mercedes cars, Ricciardo lost a place to Bottas at the start but the Red Bull was much faster and leapfrogged ahead at the first stops. Vettel was in excellent form as he recovered from a gearbox failure in qualifying and consequent five-place grid penalty for changing the part. Red Bull put the world champion on a three-stop race, and after his final stop on lap 52 he quickly passed Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and closed in on Bottas and passed the Finn on lap 63. Alonso, initially planning two stops, switched to a three-stop strategy in a successful attempt to beat Raikkonen, who led him in the first part of the race.

Las Palmas claim bragger’s rights for now!!! L as Palmas won the derby against CD Tenerife with a headed goal from Vicente Gómez in added time, in a match that had been very balanced and only in the second half did it come to life.

Both teams presented their lineups surprises, Tana in for Las Pal-

mas, and Alberto and Cámara for Tenerife. The match was very cordial, cold at times, with more passion in the stands than on the field but gradually Tenerife began to become more settled, and started to haunt the Las Palmas goal especially in set pieces. When it looked like the canary derby would end goalless, Las Palmas found victory in the first minute of stoppage time with

a great header from Vicente Gómez (which pains me to say) three important points for the ‘pios’ that brings them a step closer to the playoffs. CDT are scheduled to play again on Saturday (21:00) at the Heliodoro, hosting ninth placed Córdoba who are one point behind, Vamos Tete!!

Alonso had spent the first stint of the race stuck at the back of a three-car train led by Lotus’ Romain Grosjean and Raikkonen. Against the usual protocol, which dictates the driver leading on the track out of two teammates gets first-call on pit-stop timing, Alonso made his first stop a lap earlier in an attempt to pass Raikkonen. It failed when Alonso hit traffic on his out lap, so the Spaniard switched to doing an extra stop. He rejoined after his final stop right behind Vettel and while he was unable to keep pace with the German, who passed Raikkonen on lap 56 before setting off after Bottas, Alonso closed on Raikkonen. After a couple of laps failing to get past on the main straight, Alonso tried the outside of Turn One on lap 64, cut back into Turn Two, followed Raikkonen closely

through the difficult and fast Turn Three and out-braked his team-mate into Turn Four, to the delight of his adoring home fans. Behind the Ferraris, Grosjean took Lotus’ first points of the season in eighth, ahead of the Force India’s of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg. Jenson Button beat McLaren team-mate Kevin Magnussen to 11th place. The Dane lost a place to Vettel on the first lap when he had to pull out of an attempt to pass Button at the chicane, but fought back to finish just 0.6secs behind his team-mate. Next stop for Lewis Hamilton is Monaco on Sunday 25th May….. Five for five? (Sources BBC Sport, Andrew Benson, Chief F1 writer in Barcelona)

A

little birdy tells me that ‘Slippy G’ and Liverpool FC are still blaming Everton for their team’s demise in the final run in for the Premier League title and subsequently gift it Manchester City….and that’s all I have to say about this topic for this season, Yooooooonited!!!!. Will Arsene Wenger finally be

ordering Doris to clean the Trophy Cupboard after collecting dust for 8 years, 11 months and 25 days at the Emirates on Saturday evening? Fair game to Hull City on getting to the Final, but can they realistically cause an upset and deny Arsenal a bit of sliver-ware. Flashback…… Wimbledon v Liverpool FC , FA CUP FINAL 1988.
