ot on the heels of the news that British physicist stephen hawking will be a keynote speaker at the starmus Festival from 22nd-27th september in tenerife, the event continues to strengthen its line up with the confirmation that acclaimed film director grigorij Richters will be introducing the first private screening of his latest film, 51 Degrees.

Richters, who has been making films since the age of 7 years old, will join his fellow crew member and keynote speaker, music legend Brian May, who, as well as attaining a PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College in 2007, is responsible for the sound track on the movie. It is no wonder that Tenerife’s Teide National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site - which boasts one of the world’s best observatories and was last year awarded “Starlight Tourist Destination” and “Starlight Reserve” certificates by the Starlight Foundation, is helping the festival to gain momentum in its second year. The private screening is just one of the

Sent via facebook from Jason Slater Good morning, Tenerife weekly I send you this message for 2 reasons, one is your newspapers are really good (not all) , but i mainly came here to report something that has been published in your Tenerife Weekly newspaper, in the most recent newspaper, on page 36 at the bottom

highlights of a weeklong festival, which includes conferences and round table discussions with prominent figures such as, Nobel Prize winners Robert W. Wilson and Sir Harold W. Kroto; British ethologist, zoologist and scientist Richard Dawkins; American astronomer Jill Tarter, astrophysicists Robert Williams; three Apollo moonwalkers: Edgar Mitchell, Charlie Duke and Jack Schmitt, and five cosmonauts including Alexei Leonov, who became the first human to make a ‘space walk’ back in 1965. Just confirmed and new to the line up are astrophysicist and presenter of BBC’s The Sky at Night, Chris Lintott, and Professor of Paleanthropology, Kateriana Harvati. Festival goers will also have access to a unique concert with legendary keyboard player Rick Wakeman together with Brian May; and a stargazing “Star Party” at the Teide Observatory. Attendees will have the chance to mingle and share their views on astronomy with the well-known personalities. Ideally suited to the Starmus Festival’s theme of cosmic discovery, the film follows the life of Damon Miller (played by Moritz von Zeddelmann), a young British film maker who becomes involved in the research of asteroids, only to discover that the Earth stands on the brink of extraterrestrial disaster. Knowing the world is coming to an end, Damon finds hope in an offer made by underhand British authorities to allocate him and his loved ones places on a 2,000 capacity space station orbiting Earth. His ticket to survival rests on whether he is willing to film the last days of hysteria on Earth leading up to the asteroids hitting. right we have a post talking about Justin beiber, well it’s Bieber first , just thought i’d point that out incase it was a mistake, the description that you have put for Justin is completely atrocious, i don’t know wether you or someone else did it but seeing that in your newspaper offended me, please tell me why is he a waste of space if he decreased the amount of people commiting suicide under the age of 20 at about 17%, and the fact that he built a school with his crew ( Pencils of Promise) and the fact that he may have done mistakes as we ALL do , some more than others, but you don’t say that he is a useless waste of space after all that he has done for charities and fans, and TMZ are probably the biggest criticisers for Justin, they’re always there to try and bring him down, so many people make montages or photo edits on him and they believe it, why because they hate Justin so much, i’m not trying to be agressive in anyway but for god’s sake if you want to put stuff of Justin

Filming took place between 2011 and 2014 in and around London, initially using a skeleton crew and employing guerilla filming tactics on a major scale; with 2,500 extras used to create scenes of panic in Piccadilly Circus. The Starmus Festival is organised by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Council of Tenerife; managed by Garik Israelian,

an astrophysicist researcher at the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute (IAC); with the collaboration of The Ritz-Carlton Abama where the majority of conferences will take place. The six-day festival is priced at 300 euros (£243) per delegate and interest in attending can be registered at www.starmus.com.

methodology, statutes, policies and rules. Steve and Leisel say that “there is a lot of work to be done as this will be a brand new group for the youths of Tenerife, which will require some generous people to help us get set up”. Good luck to them, I hope it’s a great success for all concerned Steve and Leisel say that they have now had written permission to open the scout group, and have arranged an open evening for all children and parents that are interested on Tuesday 24 June from 5.30 to 7.30pm at Silencio Church Hall, Coral Mar Square. They will be starting pack nights from 1st July.

Steve and Leisel are accredited, CRBed and trained to the UK standards for Scouting Leadership, obtaining the elite Wood Badge Award. The group that is being started in Tenerife is not on its own but has behind it a large organization backed by the BSO which comprises some 2,500 members around the world. So thank you for your time and understanding.

list goes on and on! However, I must admit that I didn’t realise that he personally has done so much to reduce suicide rates amongst people under 20 (17%!!) I also knew nothing of his “Pencils of Promise” work so of course he should be commended for that! Jason you’re obviously a big fan and I salute you for being passionate about something, no matter what it is, while I will never be convinced that his music is up too much, I guess I can admit that maybe I’ve been a little harsh, so again, I apologize. Before I sign off, I’ve been a HUGE fan of Star Wars since I was younger than you and I probably get laughed at occasionally for still being so obsessed, but that’s fine, I really don’t care - believe (or beliebe) in whatever you want, and don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re wrong! may the force be with you! The Editor.

Dear Jason, Thank you so much for your message, I’m glad you like our newspaper (most of it), it’s nice to hear feedback of all kinds. I’m sorry my comments about Justin Beiber offended you, as you can probably tell, I’m not a big fan! I’m not crazy about his music, but that’s fine, the world would be a pretty boring place if everyone liked the same things, but it seems that most of the media reports about him tend to be about his (allegedly) idiotic behavior...racist remarks, spitting at people, graffiti, drag racing ...the

m.a.r.e.s. Building a marine micro-reserve management model for sustainability

t

he caNaRy IsLaND sub-tidal ecosystem is suffering a devastating plague caused by an alien sea urchin (Diadema antillarum). this tropical urchin, who plays a key role in the caribbean coral reef ecosystem conservation, has overgrown in the canary Islands coasts (with the highest densities ranging 10 – 12 individuals per square meter) causing the disappearance of all the benthic macroalgae. as a result, the fish biodiversity declined dramatically, and the ecosystem complexity has been reduced. Nowadays, the majority of the sub-tidal rocky shores in the canary Islands are desert-like areas, characterized by the absence of macroalgae, and with the rocks covered by a whitish calcareous algae layer.

Although it has not been clearly proven, all the studies point to the overfishing as the cause of the disappearance of the predator fishes. This gave the urchin an opportunity to expand its populations, provoking a downshift in the ecosystem structure. It has been observed a relation between the absence of carnivorous fishes and the high densities of Diadema antillarum, and many

NEWS ON THE ROCK El rancho, an extremely popular restaurant in Palm Mar has moved. The original restaurant was a distinctive collection of buildings situated just outside of the archway at Palm Mar, and was very popular not only as a restaurant but also a great place for functions such as weddings, and as a live music venue. Unfortunately and to the disappointment of many, the original restaurant is now abandoned and the doors are taped up. For reasons unknown the restaurant is moving into Palm Mar itself, opposite Flamingo in CC Muelles de Genova. They are continuing the 3.60 meals and will have 25 choices and is supposed to open any day now. It remains unclear what will become of the old location. island residents have been receiving incoming calls with a 0025 code which are coming from Rwanda. The callers often speak in broken english with an african accent and claim to be from Microsoft or Windows XP. These are scam calls and we advise that you don’t share any information with them and hang up. A coach caught fire last weekend on the main road through the forest of La Gomera’s Garajonay national park between 7 and 8 pm Sunday night. The private bus was travelling in the direction of the island’s capital. All passengers could leave the coach unharmed in time before the fire spread and they were taken to their destination by a replacement vehicle. The incident happened in a thickly forested area between La Laguna Grande and Pajaritos. Fire brigades had to concentrate their efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to the dry vegetation on both sides of the road as some of it had caught fire already. The bus burnt out completely and the road was closed for a while with diversions in place. The situation was kept completely under control and that the fire was put out. A unit of the fire brigade remained on the scene of the incident to keep watch. The cause of the fire is not yet known

experiments have proven that the removal of the urchins can retrieve the original ecosystem. The solution All the scientific knowledge suggests that the control of the alien urchin species can retrieve the macroalgae coverage of the rocky areas. It is also known that the Diadema antillarum populations in the marine fishing reserves of the Canary Islands are kept in very low numbers, suggesting that the sustainable use of the coastal fisheries will control the urchin populations in the long term. Unfortunately it has not been scientifically proven yet, because all the conservation programs up to date have been focused only on the control of the urchin populations, without any other management. Besides, as the urchin control programs were running on public funding, when the funds were exhausted, the urchin populations raised back. On the other hand, the conventional Marine Protected Areas are only effective in the macro scale, leaving extensive coastal areas unprotected to the plague. Besides, as they are in fact professional fishing reserves without an holistic management plan, they are not effective in the populated coastal areas where the nonprofessional fisherman are the main cause of the overfishing. The big challenge This scenario clearly points the need to develop a marine stewardship scheme, where the urchin populations can be controlled in the long term and the local population is engaged in the proper management of the ecosystem resources. Unfortunately the Spanish coast is considered State public domain by law, and the privative use of this areas are only possible through administrative concession. The concessions have been mainly conceived for profitable uses of the public domain (aquaculture pens, harbours, shellfish harvesting, etc.), and they are charged with high economic fees, with the management schemes focused on the harvesting activities. So, the real challenge is to develop a new non-profit concession scheme with the appropriate management tools (control non-professional fishing, scuba diving, sailing, anchoring, etc.) and, simultaneously, to prove that the sustainable management of the coast will retrieve the original ecosystem in the long term. The goal This project focuses on the creation of a marine microreserve model that could be replicated in multiple points of the Canary Islands coasts as a marine stewardship program, to control the Diadema antillarum populations and retrieve the original ecosystem complexity. Complementarily, a new non-profit concession scheme must be developed in collaboration with the Spanish coastal administrative authorities to develop the tools necessary to manage the uses of the coast. To fulfill this goal, OCEANO SOSTENIBLE is working in a small bay of Costa Adeje developing a Marine Micro-reserve model, controlling the urchin populations, and establishing in the area a basic laboratory

and a Marine Interpretation Center. With the scientific information gathered in this bay the success of the marine stewardship management scheme in restoring the original ecosystems could be demonstrated. issues: The creation of a micro-reserve is based on the sustainable management of an area that lies within the remit of the public domain, using a custodian-type model. The aim is to regenerate damaged ecosystems, limit the use of the resources, investigate and teach new ways of dealing with the Ocean in order to maintain the area in the long term. As the principle threats to the region are: habitat destruction, unsustainable fishing and the human coast explotation. A yearly plan is set to establish the education, scientific and conservation activities helps the commission to evaluate and direct the project. Goals: To set up a Marine Micro Reserve management model based on a marine stewardship scheme. Promote a sustainable diving commercial activity to financially support the project in the long term. Establish an in situ basic laboratory in order to perform the essential scientific research necessary to prove the benefits of the marine stewardship management scheme. Create a MARINE CENTER, an educational area to raise the awareness of the visitors about the marine conservation issue and work with local people and schools. Progress-to-date: The sea urchins have been eliminated in the rocky areas inside the microreserve. The rocky areas of the microreserve are covered back with macroalgae. There have been several ecological successions, and the macroalgae species are becoming more and more specialized. The carnivore fish species are becoming more frequently observed, despite they are not permanent in the area and the individuals are small. a

t the teNeRIFe weekLy we always try to keep one step ahead of the competition by bringing you news of new bars, restaurants and business opening in tenerife. In this edition, John Riddle, a journalist, author and publisher called in to see “a new kid on the block”, so to speak, calling at Inkspots, which has recently opened on the site of the old heritage Bar adjacent to the san Marino complex in Los cristianos. John was warmly welcomed and began by asking owner Sharon Eden, “So tell me how you came to be in Los Cristianos”? Sharon: “When we moved to Tenerife my parents Sam and Joyce came with us. Mum unfortunately had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease 6 months before, and Dad, following 3 strokes had Vascular dementia. I am a qualified nurse and dementia was my specialist field having been a regional manager overseeing 20+ care homes in England. So the decision for them to live out their days in the sun being looked after by us was made.

Unfortunately Mum only enjoyed 6 months on Tenerife and then Dad passed away in December 2013. They enjoyed their short time here, made some lovely friends and had the best care. Mum and Dad met in 1945 and one of the first tunes they danced to was ‘Till Then’ which was made famous by The Mills Brothers, but they first danced to the version by ‘The Ink Spots’. John: “So you decided to name the bar after your parent’s first dance” Sharon: “It is my tribute to Mum and Dad and they take pride of place in the bar on two canvasses. John: “So you obviously miss them very much”? Sharon: “I do every day but they are with me in InkSpots keeping an eye on things”. John: “You have other family in Tenerife”? Sharon: “Yes, Mike, my husband works in Iceland in Las Chafiras. Mike and I have been married 24 years in September. We have four wonderful children, two girls and two boys. My youngest son Tom lives with us here in Tenerife. Tom works as a sales representative for Diamond”. John: “On to the bar, four members of staff

in Dean, Maureen, Alice and yourself. Tell me a little about them” Sharon: “Well you know about me. Dean has a partner Kim and they have a beautiful little lad Lucas. Alice’s other half is Mark and together they run the Dog Hotel and then there’s Maureen. What can I tell you about Maureen? She is married to Dave. John: “So they work well as a team”? Sharon: “Very much so, more of a family than a team which is very important in this business. John: “You seem to be going that extra mile for your customers, food, entertainment, pool and darts teams, quizzes, kids club, swop shop and an arts and crafts session. Is there nothing you haven’t thought of”? Sharon: “This business is all about keeping the customers happy and entertained. We want them to come back time and time again. They may well make their first visit as a stranger but by the time they leave we want them to feel like friends”. John: “Thank you for sharing your thoughts

with me. My sincere best wishes for every success with InkSpots”. There is no doubt that if Sharon and her team’s enthusiasm is anything to go by InkSpots is on the road to success in a business that doesn’t always run as smooth as they would like.

ROM as eaRLy as nine months Mo sands realized that her son, Dominique was going to want to walk or should I say dance the boards of the stage. Dominique began to dance before he could walk. he fell in love with the Irish gigging of Michael Flatley from Lord of the Dance at this age and would pull himself up on to his feet by holding on to his pram and try to copy the fancy footwork of the famous Irish dancer from the video box.

He started ballet at the age of four and has never looked back since. At five he was asked who his best friend was and his reply to that question was , THE STAGE . He has attended Estrellas Theatre School since the age of six where his mother has been Director from 2009, five years ago. The first show Mo Sands put on with her school was Billy Elliot and Dominique vowed way back then that one day he would in fact be one of the Billy`s Billy in the West End. Since then he has classes in theatre, voice tuition, modern dance, hip hop, tap and has several ballet teachers. He has had many main parts in local shows but this week , Friday 13th

to be precise, this ten year old little boy dreams may just come true. At the beginning of February Dominique travelled to Newcastle to audition for the part of Billy. He got the recall . So this week he is flying for London where Dominique will take part in the next audition for Billy in London. He needs to win his place at the Billy Elliot summer school to make his dream come true. Estrellas Theatre School are so excited that one of their very own has reached the final auditions. We wish him all the luck in the world and that his dream becomes his reality.

esPIte protests and petitions, the wall has started to come down. the photo shows the bulldozers in place and part of the wall already in rubble. the plan for its replacement is not clear, but is likely to be the glass and steel model discussed last year.

The destruction of the wall is part of the Ayuntamiento’s upmarket push with new bylaws to outlaw plastic terrace furniture in restaurants, hotels and bars, and to enforce colour branding in the town. Further irritation was caused by the council’s attempt to enforce street cleanliness (link), with fines up to 3,000 euros for anything from spitting to shaking carpets: there were even restrictions on watering

plants on the outside of buildings. The San Telmo sea wall is quite a feature of the town’s frontage, but the municipal planners want to alter the feel of the promenade and replace the wall with a glass and steel barrier. The plans have given rise to protest marches and leaflet drops, and there is even a Facebook page dedicated to protesting against plans that are seen as mindless destruction of an historic part of the town’s infrastructure. The council, for its own part, denies that the wall has any heritage value, and says that the new barrier is needed to protect the town from the sea. Some might wonder if the wall hadn’t done that quite effectively throughout its existence …

he teNeRIFe caBILDO brings a new cirque du soleil, Quidam, which will take place from 3rd to 11th of January, 2015 in the tenerife Insular santiago Martín Pavilion, which offers a total of ten shows. The insular Minister of Culture and Historical Heritage, Cristóbal de la Rosa, said that “Cirque du Soleil has only been once to the Canary Islands and Tenerife in January 2013, also at the Pavilion Insular Santiago Martín with Joy.” “Now, the Cabildo offers the opportunity to enjoy this class company that has delighted more than 100 million spectators in over 300 cities around the world again,” he adds. Quidam premiered in the big leagues of Montreal in April 1996. Since then, millions of people from 5 continents have been enjoying this amazing show. In December 2010, Quidam embarked on a new journey with the same spectacular production worldwide, and now, thanks to the

Accion Del Sol News

Accion Del Sol recently saw the

arrival of a black German Shepherd in very poor condition , after all the usual veterinary health care “Crono” was lucky to be quickly adopted by a Spanish family living in Vilaflor. The family have a small wine plantation but they had been plagued by many thefts from there property so hence deciding to find a big dog to protect there land and to keep the family safe. One night “Crono” woke his owner and was asking to go out side, Crono caught 3 robbers in the process of burglary and prevented the thieves from fleeing whilst the owner called the police. The police arrived and all 3 robbers were arrested. Crono is a hero in a very short space of time and the owners are so happy to have him in there family knowing that he will love and protect them all. What a lovely ending to an initially sad affair of another dog abandoned on our streets of Tenerife.

We were called a couple of weeks ago to report a very sick semi wild dog in Aldea Blanca. We have been aware of this pack for some time but efforts to catch them have been unsuccessful. This dog, we were told, was so ill, fitting in the heat of the sun and seemingly close to death. We asked Vet Yaiza Perez Molindyk to take a look, thinking it would just be a case of putting the poor thing out of his misery, but she took him home and started to treat him. She diagnosed bacterial meningitis so he most certainly would have been dead had we not intervened. After a week he was good to go home, but he is young, less than a year old, and has had no human contact in his short life. His eventual owner will need to socialise him and spend some time with him, but we are sure he will make a cracking pet. Could that special owner be you? He is fully vaccinated, sterilised and chipped, and our usual adoption fee of 110 euros covers all of this. Call Elaine on 678 015653 to arrange a meeting. Adopt don’t buy – always the best option.

no gorilla suit nor mistaken identity: why the canaries zoo story is not what it seems

t

he story was reported around the world. a keeper at the Loro parque zoo in tenerife had been shot with a tranquilizer dart by a vet who had mistaken him for one of the park’s gorillas. the keeper, the story said, was dressed up in a gorilla costume, pretending to be an escaped animal. the episode sounds like something straight out of a comedy script, and the foreign tabloids were quick to report it. But the reality of the situation was not so funny: it was an accident that could have been much more serious. there was no gorilla costume, and nobody was mistaken for one of the zoo animals. It is true that a zoo keeper was hit by a tranquilizer dart meant for gorillas during an emergency drill at the zoo on Monday. But sources from the park say that he was not dressed in a gorilla suit, nor was he imitating the movements of one of the giant apes, as the press reported.

last military parade as King

eX-muslIm Faces eXpulsIOn

I k

INg JUaN caRLOs has presided over his last military parade before abdicating in favor of his son. Prince Felipe accompanied the king at last Sunday’s annual Armed Forces day ceremony that honors those who died in the service of the nation. But Sunday also revealed a new poll which showed most citizens want a referendum to decide whether Spain should remain a monarchy. Pollster Metroscopia found that

62 percent of respondents said they wanted a referendum on the monarchy “at some point.” A majority also said they favored the king’s abdication because it “opens the way for new people with new ideas.” As well as the poll, thousands of people gathered in 40 cities throughout Spain late Saturday calling on the government to hold a referendum on changing from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. In Madrid’s downtown Puerta del Sol

square they chanted, “Yes, we want to decide,” and “Tomorrow, Spain will be a republic.” The poll was published Sunday in El Pais newspaper and is based on telephone interviews on June 4-5 with 1,000 adults over 18 years old, with a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points. The prince is due to be proclaimed King Felipe VI on June 19.

N FeBRUaRy of this year spanish police picked up Pakistaniborn ex-Muslim critic of Islam Imran Firasat from the street and immediately started his expulsion procedure, ignoring his plea that his appeal against the revocation of his Refugee status was with the supreme court. Only timely intervention by Firasat’s lawyer prevented his deportation to Pakistan where he faces definite death penalty or mob lynching.

Although the police failed to deport Imran Firasat immediately, police officials forwarded the expulsion procedure papers, ignoring the pending Supreme Court hearing of his appeal. An expulsion order was duly issued by the Spanish Head of Police department within a month. Critics of these actions claim the Spanish authorities are trying to throw Imran Firasat out of Spain, simply for exercising his right to freedom of expression concerning Islam and Prophet Muhammad, and for which they are even willing to ignore the Spanish law.

MAINLAND NEWS IN BRIEF SPAniSh PolicE have arrested a suspected member of Basque separatist group ETA as she arrived at Madrid’s airport. Maria Jesus Elorza Zubizarreta was arrested last Sunday as she disembarked from a flight from Venezuela. An Interior Ministry statement said Elorza is wanted on a European arrest warrant issued December 2006 by French judicial authorities. She is suspected of having belonged to an ETA unit responsible for the murder of several members of Spain’s security forces before fleeing to France in 1984. There, she allegedly participated in bomb-making activities for the group before moving to Venezuela. ETA is blamed for the killings of more than 825 people in a campaign of bombings and shootings aimed at achieving an independent Basque state straddling Spain’s border with France. PArEnTS Will BE finED if their children repeatedly get drunk in public, under new laws devised to halt a rise in binge-drinking among Spanish teenagers - a problem the country calls “English drinking”. Under the proposals, children under 16 could be fined $430 if they are repeatedly found intoxicated by police. SPAniSh lAWmAkErS approved Wednesday the abdication of King Juan Carlos, amid noisy protests calling for a republic, paving the way for his son Felipe to assume the scandal-hit monarchy. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy predicted Tuesday that “a great majority of lawmakers” would vote in favour of a law approved by his cabinet last week allowing the 76-year-old king to step down. The bill has the backing of the ruling conservative Popular Party and the main opposition Socialists as well as the small centrist UPyD party which together have 300 seats in the 350-seat lower house of parliament. The law will also have to be approved by the Senate, Spain’s upper house of parliament, which will vote on it on June 17. Felipe, a 46-year-old former Olympic yachtsman, is then expected to be sworn in at a ceremony two days later, although the date will only be officially finalised after the abdication law is approved. Tiny left-wing and regional parties, including the United Left coalition and the Catalan separatist Catalan Republic Left, will vote against the law and instead call for a referendum on the future of the monarchy. A SmAll GrouP in Puerto Rico has launched a campaign to demand that the Caribbean island break all political links with the United States and annex itself once again to Spain to become an autonomous community of the Iberian nation. “The U.S. distorted our history. Nobody here knows we were Spanish citizens with full voting rights until the 1898 invasion. The United States denies us that right,” said Jose Nieves, the founder of the Puerto Rico Reunification With Spain group. “The Puerto Rican culture is disappearing,” added Nieves, 42, a history buff with a criminology degree from the Caribbean University. He noted that Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain for more than four centuries and in 1897 even had a charter that gave it sovereignty as an overseas Spanish province. Nieves said he is planning to call a general assembly in the summer, before registering the movement with the Puerto Rico State Department. Then, he said, they would formally contact the Spanish Consulate and ultimately the Spanish government. “We want to become Spaniards again, to be autonomous community No. 18 of a country that we never wanted to abandon,” he said.

NO LEADER, NO IDEAS, NO FUTURE?

t

he PsOe (spain’s main socialist party) have not had a good year. In fact, the past six years have been rather complicated, to say the least. Poor old Zapatero had to put up with a crisis in addition to endless Mr. Bean jokes. Rubalcaba had to put up with constantly losing elections and mildly amusing gnome jokes. and now, it seems that nobody is brave enough to take on the task of leading this ailing party out of its internal crisis.

First off, Carme Chacón was tipped for the post. She seemed reluctant, probably due to the fact that she can

L

see the current party hierarchy as unworkable. She made a subtle statement, claiming that Susana Diaz was a better candidate. Susana kicked the idea around for a few days, and then declined on the basis that she would be doing Andalucía a dis-service by abandoning her present post as regional president there. So, on July the 13th, we´ll all be switching off the final of the World Cup to keep up to date with the gripping events as the PSOE elect their new leader. There are a few hopefuls left, José Antonio Pérez Tapias and possibly Eduardo Madina. Never heard of them? It probably doesn´t matter. The party seems doomed for the next 2 general elections. They chose to listen to their prehistoric party barons rather than the voters. The new political tsunami, Podemos, seem

to be preparing to pull the rug from underneath the opposition party in addition to worrying the ruling party PP with plain, clear messages of anticorruption and transparency as the main foundation for Spain’s second democracy. Between now and May of 2015, when most of Spain will hold local elections (which E.U. residents are eligible to stand as candidates and vote in), we will see some very bold changes in Spanish politics. These changes will affect just about every resident who lives in Tenerife. But hey, why bother with politics? It’s all crooks and corruption. And there’s football on tonight …

TURTLE POWER

ast tIMe it was Paul the octopus who unerringly predicted spain’s road to world cup glory, and this time, it’s cabezona the turtle. the above video shows cabezona picking Brazil to beat croatia in tonight’s opening game! here, spanish media and public alike are realistic about spain’s chances of retaining the cup while playing in the hothouse (literally) of Brazil, and stressing that the chances ...of any european team winning are very low indeed.

They say, none the less, that all the pressure is off because last time round they lost their first game, so this time they’re going to try just to enjoy the experience. Hopefully this will

mean some wonderful football to see for those of us who enjoy watching when it’s played well and beautifully, but who aren’t season-in and seasonout fans of the game. I remember many years ago in Thatcher’s Britain,

Norman Tebbit said that you could tell integrated immigrants by the team they wanted to win - in England, it should be England, he said! Here in Spain, I’m pleased to find that I’m thinking “VAMOS ESPAÑA”!

spaIn’s eIGht Year Old Queen - tO - Be!

F

RIeNDs whO gO tO schOOL and ballet class with little 8-year old Leonor will soon have to call her “highness”. Now that her grandfather Juan carlos is stepping down as king of spain her childhood will never be the same again.

Prince Felipe’s wife Letizia gave birth to Leonor on October 31, 2005. Letizia, an exnewsreader, is already a darling of the people and press with her model looks and disarming smile and along with Leonor and her sister Sofia, aged seven, they could possibly be the

cutest royal family in the world! Once her father Felipe is crowned king, she will no longer be “Infanta”, but Princess and eventually Queen of Spain. She will also be the youngest direct royal heir in Europe. Many people believe that the new generation of a younger Spanish royal family is exactly what it needs to save its image. The Prince’s biographer, Jose Apezarena said: “Until now, her parents have deliberately protected her so that she is not in the papers all the time. Those days are over. They will still try to minimise the impact on her personal life, but soon she is going to be the heir to

the throne. It will change her life. I feel a bit sorry for her because the change is going to take away some of her freedom. Leonor is a very intelligent child, very active but calm. She faces the cameras with great serenity, She is very caring towards her sister. She makes sure to give her advice and help. She does the same things as her classmates, eats in school, goes to ballet class, and studies English. They have been explaining to her for some time who she is, who her parents and grandparents are, and what their role is in the country, she has been listening to that, but she is still very young.”

When Felipe is crowned, Letizia will become queen and Leonor will take the title Princess of Asturias. She is expected to follow the same preparation for the crown as her father did, with military training when she is older. At 18, she must swear loyalty to the king and the constitution. The couple have kept their daughters largely out of view so their childhoods can be as normal as possible, but now she is heiress to the throne, we can expect to see a lot more of this cute little princess.

PaIN’s hIgh cOURt ruled last Friday that a criminal investigation be launched into the killing of spanish cameraman Jose couso by a Us tank shell in Iraq in 2003, despite a new law passed by spain’s centre-right government in March, placing limits on judicial powers in international cases. Judicial authorities have sought the arrest and questioning of three US soldiers accused of involvement in Couso’s death. Ukrainian cameraman Taras Protsyuk,, was also killed by the shell that crashed into a Baghdad hotel. The new law curbs the powers of judges to prosecute human rights cases under the principle of universal jurisdiction. The High Court must now rule on the legality of all pending cases one by one and must be dismissed if they do not meet the new legal requirements that those accused of alleged human rights abuses must themselves be Spanish citizens. Despite the alleged perpetrators of Couso’s death not being Spanish, the High Court ruled that the case could be continued under terms of the Geneva Convention, which defines the rights and protection afforded to civilians in war zones. In November 2004, a US Defense

Department report stated that US forces bore “no fault or negligence” in the shelling of the hotel, where 100 international journalists were staying. Universal jurisdiction, the principle that crimes such as genocide and torture are so serious they can be prosecuted across borders, was pioneered by Spain in 1985 and led to the detention in London of Chilean former dictator Pinochet in 1998 through an arrest warrant issued from Spain. European University of Madrid law professor Nieves Noval said about 13 cases in areas from El Salvador to Rwanda were being processed in Spanish courts: “It’s been said that when people could not find justice, they came to Spain.” However, China, Israel and the United States have all bristled at Spanish judicial i nve s t i g a t i o n s into allegations of genocide, rights abuses or war crimes. Critics say this led to the tightening of the law to prevent diplomatic disputes.

Talks were underway to sell Eurofighter jets outside of Europe, to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, kuwait and malaysia.

Spain to pay EU Aid package back early

D

ePUty PRIMe MINIsteR soraya saenz de santamaria said last Friday that spain will start paying back early part of the 41 billion-euro ($55 billion) aid package it received from the european Union in 2012 to prop up ailing banks and prevent the nation from descending into financial chaos,

Spain will pay back 1.3 billion euros (soon, even though payments were not due on the rescue funding until 2022, she said. Spain’s banks were hit hard with bad loans and saddled with property after a prolonged real estate boom burst. Amid intense international fears that the country’s financial

system could collapse, the EU approved the aid package. Saenz de Santamaria said the government also approved an economic stimulus package with 40 measures that it hopes will generate economic stimulus of 11 billion euros . The measures reduce what banks collect from credit and debit card purchases in a bid to help small and medium size businesses, provide new incentives for vehicle purchases and increase credit lines. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said last weekend that Spain will lower its corporate tax rate from 30 percent to 25 percent but Saenz de Santamaria did not mention that plan or give guidance on when the tax break would be approved.

RItIsh cOMeDIaN and actor Rik Mayall has died aged just 56.

Best known for his breakout role as anarchist Rick in The Young Ones in which he starred with his friend Adrian Edmondson, they later both also starred in the sitcom Bottom. Seen as a pioneer of alternative comedy, Mayall also appeared in Blackadder, The Comic Strip presents and The New Statesman. He co-wrote The Young Ones with Lise Mayer and Ben Elton, which ran for 12 episodes between 1982 and 1985. It shared

cult status and schoolboy humour with later sitcom Bottom. He also famously played the loud-mouthed and lecherous Lord Flashheart in BBC comedy series Blackadder, starring Rowan Atkinson. His manager Roger Davidson said: “It is a terrible shock. All we know... is that Rik died at home. He touched many lives, and always for the better.” Long-time friend and comedy partner Ade Edmondson added: “There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most

carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard.” Police said they were called to reports of a sudden death of a man in his 50s at 13:19 BST on Monday, in Barnes in south west London. The Metropolitan Police said the death was not believed to be suspicious. Ben Elton said of his friend: “He changed my life utterly,” adding: “He always made me cry with laughter, now he’s just made me cry.” Stephen Fry, who appeared with Mayall in

Blackadder, described his co-star as “an authentic comedy genius and a prince among men,” adding he was “simply distraught” at the news. Nigel Planer, who played the hapless hippie Neil in The Young Ones, said he was “very, very sad and upset that we’ve lost Rik, who was inspirational, bonkers, and a great life force Mayall’s film roles included the comedies Drop Dead Fred and Guest House Paradiso. Mayall is survived by his loving wife and 3 children.

England squad arrive in Brazil E

ngland’s national team arrived in Brazi this week ahead of the start of the 2014 Fifa World Cup, where they checked into the Royal Tulip Hotel, south of Rio’s city centre and will be training on a secure military base beneath the famous Sugar Loaf mountain. Roy Hodgson’s side played their last pre-tournament match against Honduras in Miami on Saturday night, drawing 0-0. The first match in their World Cup campaign is against Italy, tomorrow, Saturday, 14th June. They then face Uruguay on Thursday, 19th June before ending Group D against Costa Rica on Tuesday, 24th June. Last Saturday’s friendly against Honduras was delayed by more than 40 minutes because of a thunderstorm, the England squad and staff flew to Rio straight after the game. Manager Hodgson was relieved to escape without any injuries and content with a draw saying: “England, for once, are not burdened down by

huge weight of expectation but the prospect of playing a World Cup in the game’s spiritual home is engendering great excitement. It has been three excellent weeks of preparation. The squad is growing stronger, they are bonding together very well and the mood is one of quiet optimism and a reasonable degree of confidence. That is all you can hope for. Now is when the real football begins and I am happy that we are in good spirits and the players have really done as much as we could ask of them.”

Phoning It In! The New Land Rover you can drive with your phone!

T

he latest Land Rover, to be the replacement for the Discovery was previewed this week at the New York motor Show. The Discovery Vision Concept is full to the brim with the latest innovative technology… including the ability to drive it with your phone! The amazing vehicle gives the driver the ability to control the vehicle at very low

speeds via a smartphone, for instance, if a driver is attempting to navigate difficult terrain or even a difficult to get in parking space and needs to get out of the car. Transparent Bonnet technology, which allows the driver to “see” under the car via a Head-Up display on the windscreen and infrared sensors in the foglights that scan the ground ahead, map the terrain and display the imagery on a screen inside the car are just some of the other amazing features this incredible motor boasts.

The Discovery Vision Concept also uses augmented reality to create what Land Rover calls “smart glass” which can display imagery, like a computer screen, while being completely transparent. Working in conjunction with eye-tracking sensors, it can display information on surroundings based on what the occupants of the vehicle are looking at. Gaze at a passing landmark, for example, and the vehicle can tell you what it is and how to get there. Swiping the window can then send

this information to a smartphone or tablet. Even the panoramic sunroof can be used to display screensavers, such as a starry night sky. Land Rover is yet to confirm which elements of the technology we are likely to see on the production version of the new Discovery or Freelander replacement, which will go on sale in 2015. The launch of the new vehicles also ties in with the original Discovery’s 25th anniversary.

BRItIsh sNORkeLeR off the coast of cornwall was almost swallowed alive when he encountered a huge basking shark. Lew Smart, 31, was sunbathing on the beach at Senne Cove in Cornwall when he spotted a large fin in the water. Incredibly Smart (possibly by name, not nature) dived into the water with his underwater camera to film the monster fish The basking shark was a huge 15ft specimen and is shown gliding through the water with its huge mouth agape, wide enough to have swallowed the man whole, however Basking sharks pose no threat to humans, only feeding on plankton

as they swim through the ocean. Lew has swum with sharks before, he has been chased by both a tiger shark and a reef shark on separate occasions! He stayed in the water for 20 minutes to observe this particular breed’s behaviour, he said: ‘We get basking sharks quite frequently just off the beach in Senne. After I saw it about 30 metres out I decided to jump in the sea as I thought it would be quite cool to have a swim with it.’ From May to October basking sharks come up from the deep ocean to feed on Plankton blooms. They are often spotted in British waters.

‘Dracula’ Ant Species Discovered

S

IX NEW SPECIES of socalled Dracula antsmysterious bloodsucking insects have been identified in Madagascar and they are just plain weird, so much so, that they seem to defy many of the normal rules that scientists use to classify ants. Study co-author Masashi Yoshimura, a researcher at the

California Academy of Sciences, said in a statement: “The genus Mystrium is the most mysterious group within the bizarre Dracula ants “Mystrium was a difficult group to identify because of the remarkable variation within each species.” Dracula ants, so named because they suck the blood of their young in a process dubbed “nondestructive cannibalism,” were first discovered in a rotting log in Madagascar more than

a decade ago. But for years, these weird insects confounded researchers, as looks can be deceiving for the Dracula ants. ,” study co-author Brian Fisher, an entomologist, said: “The role of an individual in a colony is not always obvious by its appearance. Ants that look similar may be minor workers in one species but queens in another species.” For instance, the workers sometimes become queen ants;

the queens may have short, nonexistent or large wings; and the queens can often be smaller than the workers. In addition, the genus had three different modes of reproduction, making classification even more difficult. After collecting and scrutinizing thousands of the ants in Madagascar for two decades, Yoshimura and Fisher figured out a method for distinguishing new species. The ants start out as either

a male, a large queen or a major or minor worker, Yoshimura said. Though some of the workers may then go on to reproduce or even become queens, identifying the species requires knowing these origin states, not the current role, of the ant. Classifying them also requires understanding their reproductive style. Using this new framework, the researchers were able to reclassify several existing species and identify six completely new ones.

NDIaN FOOD has to be my favourite takeout food. there’s nothing quite like arranging your dishes, sides, poppadoms and pickles in front of you before you hit play as you settle down to watch a movie or new show you’re catching up on.

I’ve tried many different ones over the years but Balti Balti is a Belter! Situated opposite the Passarela centre just up from the Mirador in Los Cristianos , Balti Balti is in the corner of a busy block of bars and restaurants, I was first recommended it by a friend when I still lived in Palm Mar, and they delivered so after trying it they were soon our night in with a movie accom-

paniment meal, we didn’t even need to tell them the address as I was obviously one of the few brave enough, or stupid enough to regularly order the lamb phaal!! Anyway, after regularly taking advantage of their early bird menu, only 10.95 for poppadoms, pickles a choice of starter including onion bhaji, chicken pakora, samosas or chicken tikka, a main course curry of any meat and sauce apart from King prawn and rice, chips or naan, we decided last Sunday to sit in and eat at the restaurant. It’s tastefully decorated, no flock wallpaper and dodgy music, it was Bruno Mars and modern decor. We mostly opted for different choices to our usual take out favourites, the lamb jalfrezi was incredibly tasty, whilst both Becky’s

starter ( tender chunks of tandoori chicken with melted cheese in the gaps on a bed of sizzling onions) and starter and lamb saag (lamb cooked with spices and spinach) had me drooling over her plate! There’s no question that their takeout is beautiful but eating in just took it up another notch, everything was piping or sizzling hot and when Becky’s cheese and garlic naan arrived, which is something she often orders it was amazing to eat fresh out of the oven, runny gooey cheese and pungent garlic, mmmm next time I’m having what Bex had! So if you want a great takeout, try Balti Balti, but if want an even better Indian dining experience, book a table now.

aRk haMILL gave us our first clue to what the older Luke skywalker in these shots promoting the upcoming annual star wars weekend in Orlando, Florida.

Hamill who is reprising his role of Jedi warrior Luke Skywalker in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII, Hamill, now 60, tipped a visual cue to the state of Luke Skywalker in the new trilogy,

especially when he’s holding a lightsaber and standing next to Mickey Mouse! It’s quite fitting that, with the greeting beard he bears a passing resemblance to his mentor Obi Wan, and it seems likely, with Star Wars habit of recurring themes, old Luke may take on the training of a young student, who is strong in the Force...but will they be able to resist the lure of the Dark Side? Mark Hamill was the guest of honour and an extreme coup for the Orlando event, especially as

he’s already begun filming Star Wars: Episode VII in London. As was reported on the Disney Parks Web site, Hamill will be part of the daily “Legends of the Force” motorcade, which goes down the main street in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood park. He’ll participate in a special talk show that fans can attend. And fans at home can follow along by tracking the hashtag #DisneyTheForce all weekend.

M

aRVeL are becoming notorious for “leaking” information on future productions on a Friday. two weeks ago, they announced that ant-Man was directorless after having edgar weight attached as director for a decade or more. Now, not only have they leaked two more potential ant-Man helmers, but they’re also spreading word that two actors are being sought for the title role in Doctor strange. According to the leak, Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch are hot favourites Marvel sees Doctor Strange as a key piece in

their post-Avengers: Age Of Ultron Phase Three plans (particularly with no Iron Man 4 on the horizon), so there’s a lot of pressure on the fantasy film to be a major player as far as box office and, in the wake of AntMan, positive geek buzz. Tom Hardy, 36, has brutish good looks, but often obscures or outright hides them in a series of facial prosthetics and outlandish accents. something of a chameleon, in that

his appearance is never the same from one movie to the next. He’d bring a working-class edge to Strange, and make him convincing in hand-to-hand battle, which would be helpful if they’re making a more grounded Doctor Strange. He’s done superhero or more accurately, villain before as the masked Bane in The Dark Knight Rises but he’s got potential franchise-starter Splinter Cell, and he’s the new Mad Max in Fury Road. Benedict Cumberbatch has been mentioned for the role before. BBC’s Sherlock seems a more obvious choice, Cumberbatch is

Now it seems that Tatum is aiming for his own superhero movie. Tatum has long been keen on playing the X-Men character Gambit and with recent news that there are plans for a standalone Gambit movie with Tatum. During a press junket for 22 Jump Street, Tatum cautioned that it’s still very early in the story stages, but confirmed he’s as in as he “could possibly be” and said he’d like to change up the superhero movie with this film. Though there has been no official announcement, the actor said that the deal is just about done:

the very early planning stages: “[It could] possibly [be rated R], but I don’t think they’ll ever—I don’t know, we’re still in the very, very, early, early stages. We don’t even have a writer, we just talked very, very early stuff.” Next up in the X-Men universe will be X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility to think that Gambit could start picking up steam later this year. Better start practising that Cajun accent Channing!

classically regal and would bring a haughty charm to Strange. So, although a working class slightly thuggish Strange would be interesting, my money’s on Cumberbatch, even if only for the simple reason that I’ve got a thing about people who have already been a superhero or villain being cast as another one- I’ve only just got over the fact that the Human Torch is now Captain America, so no Bane as Strange!!

eNDy MORReLL has sat down for an enjoyable time watching tennis on the television. suddenly there was an almighty whoosh and an eagle with 4 foot wingspan came in through the window and madly began to flap around in her living room smashing ornaments and terrorizing her in the process. the one and a half foot high bird settled down after a while in her home at Poole in Dorset and started to peck at a bowl of pot pourri until she fed it pieces of ham. Wendy and her friend tried to lead the Eagle out of the house with the ham but the bird was having none of it and wouldn’t be led. Escape came in the form of Wessex Bird of Prey

Centre as they lured the bird away with a dead chick. After a few enquiries it was found that the bird was called storm and he had been reported missing by his owner after he broke tethers three days earlier. Storm had been trained to keep seagulls from a landfill site.

a FeW Wee Facts t he ROMaNs kNew that urine was a useful commodity but modern man just can’t wait to get rid of it. here are ten things that it can be used for …. ReaLLy! I’m not taking the Pee! 1 It can be used to tan leather 2 Makes a great bleach and is still used by some tribes to wash clothes 3 It can be used to make gunpowder as it contains a substance called saltpierre 4 Egyptians and Romans used to use it to whiten their teeth. YUCK 5 Stem Cells found in urine have been used to grow new teeth. 6 Physicists have had great success creating a paper battery using urine. 7 It contains certain chemicals that make it useful in dying materials. The use of urine in the clothing industry was widespread at one time. 8 It is said that washing in it will improve your skin quality. It is particularly good for the hair and scalp and stimulates new hair growth. 9 Urine is an excellent fertilizer

for plants when watered down and it also repels animals from eating your fruit and veg. It would repel me too! Hudder the thought! 10 Scientists in Bristol have come up with a way of charging mobile phones using urine. So you see, the simplest of things can be used in all sorts of ways. I can’t see many of the above ideas really taking off but it just shows us that the things that we throw away aren’t always rubbish. Maybe, one day, we will learn to be a little less particular about “nasty” things and in the process start to thing about our effects on the world. Until then I will wash my hair in perfumed shampoo and clean my teeth with my favourite flavor of toothpaste

sat aND watcheD almost all of the D Day celebrations this week. Many of the interviews brought a tear to my eye. the soldier who escaped from his nursing home to visit the beaches made me weep with pride. there were some honourable men in that war. Men who put their lives on their line for their country and those who survived have lived their lives with the memories of what they did and saw imprinted on their brains. War is such a terrible waste and I can’t see the point in it. It is usually started by a minority or even one man and ends up consuming all the people around it. The allied forces were clever and it was brains that baffled the brawn in the end. They played out Normandy like a game of chess and they won. God Bless them All and God Bless the Freedom that we all enjoy today.

Sea It To Believe It! L IVINg ON a relatively small island surrounded by warm seas and deep oceans, there is rarely a trip to the beach or a dip in the sea not accompanied by the thought of what’s swimming, crawling or slithering beneath the surface those crystalline waters. seas throughout the world are home to some of the earths most bizarre residents. here are some of the most truly weird watery wonders.

The Blobfish was recently named the world’s ugliest animal and for good reason. This grotesque fish inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of mainland Australia and Tasmania, as well as the waters of New Zealand. the aptly named Ghost Shrimp only has color when it eats something colorful. It resides in lakes and rivers throughout the central portion of the United States. The Blind Lobster is also called the Dinochelus ausubeli, which means terrible and fearful in Greek. The new species is represented by only four specimens. The Census of Marine Life collected it at 300 meters. The Jeweled Umbrella Squid was found 1,650 feet beneath the North Atlantic Ocean. on this distinct beauty are mismatched. One is bigger than the other which helps with scoping it’s prey in the darkness. The Sea Angel is normally seen swimming in groups and is classified into six families. The sea slugs were discovered in 2005 by the Census of Marine Life at about 1,148 feet under the ocean. The sea angel is actually a naked snail. The Yeti Crab is new to science and belongs to a new family of crustaceans. The hairlike setae provides a nutritional source and hosts mats of chemosynthetic bacteria. The Young Ice Fish has no red blood cells and it’s blood is filled with anti-freeze. The unique underwater creature is adapted to the cold waters of Antarctica continental shelf where it resides. The vampire squid is a deep sea cephalopod found throughout the tropical oceans in the world. The phylogenetic relict is the only known survivor of it’s order, Vampyromorphida. The deformed looking fish washed up on the Brazilian beach. It’s fins appear to be a cross between legs and wings making it one bizarre discovery. The “Longnose Batfish” uses it’s strong pectoral and pelvic as hands and feet. I The albino, and one eyed shark was

first discovered as a fetus inside of it’s mother in the Sea of Cortez. Many questioned the legitimacy of this cyclops shark but scientists have confirmed it is real. Thanks to a congenital condition called “cyclopia”, the 22 inch long fetus has one eye in the front of its head.

aVINg a Few PROBLeMs in the garden folks? wondering why those tomatoes and pepper plants are turning yellow or haven’t many blooms on your flowers? Maybe you are fortunate enough to own a lawn, but your turf is turning brown....No it’s not just strong sun or watering that’s the problem, it could have more to do with the lack of magnesium in your soil, prohibiting nutrients being absorbed through the roots. well let me tell you folks to go get yourself some epsom salts..... no not for yourself personally, though a little of these magic salts in a bath could achieve a sedated nervous system and a few relaxed muscles to go out into your garden and enjoy it. Epsom Salt is a natural mineral consisting of two major components...magnesium and sulphur. Great for not only fertilizing plants but also to encourage greener growth with higher yields and more blooms.

epsom salts

No point in rushing off down the garden path wafting your packet of Epsom and hoping the fairies will deposit the salts where needed. Not happening. The fairies are too busy down the bottom of our garden having headaches of their own. So here’s a few pointers as to how to use these wonderful salts on your own crops, flowers and foliage. FLOWERING PLANTS...put one tablespoon of Epsom salt into one gallon of water. This mixture will help force blooms. TOMATOES and PEPPERS...use one tablespoon per foot of plant height and apply every few weeks to keep the leaves from yellowing. HOUSEPLANTS...use two tablespoons per gallon of water feeding the plants monthly. TREES...apply two tablespoons per nine square feet over the rooting area three times per year. This method also applies to shrubs, bushes and evergreens such as azalea or rhododendron but to be applied over the root area every two to four weeks. ROSES...wow...they do love this salt...use one tablespoon per foot of plant height per plant every two weeks. Also you could scratch into the soil around the base of your plant to encourage flowering canes and healthy new base cane growth. You can even encourage the plants by soaking unplanted bushes in a mixture of one cup Epsom per gallon of water. It really does help the roots

I

to recover. Don’t forget to throw a tablespoon into the hole before planting neither... they really do have a greedy love of it. LAWNS...sprinkle on the lawn or mix with water on a regular basis for good strong green colour with a dense coverage.

Well i do hope you find these tips of use yourselves...me im off to make myself a skin mask using Epsom in the mixture then im off down the bottom of the garden to join the faries in the bird bath.....cheer up my weary feet....

chalkboard painting

MeNtIONeD Last week about chalkboard painting plant pots but you can in fact use it on walls, furniture and lots of household decors. It’s also a perfect backdrop for writing your own messages or labels on items around the home or on gifts etc.

Making your own chalkboard paint in absolutely any colour couldn’t be easier and though most recommend the use of latex paint in your mix, i have personally tried this out using acrylic....and it does work. So if you have part tins of either i really don’t think that you can go wrong. Measurements for your mix is also so very easy to remember. Simply for each half cup of paint (acrylic or latex) you will need one tablespoon of unsanded tile grout.....And that’s it! Mix your own paint colours together to find the perfect shade you need, and the tile grout can be purchased at any hardware store or

ferreteria. Then keeping to the above rule of thumb for your measured mix stir the grout into the paint until there are no lumps remaining using a plastic dish and spoon. You are now ready to paint away on any object that you wish to, but i do advise that because the paint will begin to harden once it is mixed, only mix what you will need at any given time as it will not store like other paints. Once your chalkboard paint has dried completely you will then need to slate the surface before writing upon for the first time. A simple process achieved by lightly rubbing chalk along the surface and then lightly rubbing the chalk off again With an abundance of ideas for the use of chalk-boarding I’m sure you could have a little fun. Why not personalise your own mugs cups and glassware. Have a go at painting pebbles, labelling spice jars, food containers, or even pans. Furniture and walls could be

painted in a child’s room. Who gives a lollipop for their doodling then! Could even impress the kids by erecting a massive home-made chalkboard boarding on the garden walls or fencing. Reminder/notice boards for the kitchen are always a good idea too...... handy for making aware to late home comers.....Dinners in the Dog!!!

lady liberty arrives

O

n June 17th 1885, the dismantled statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of america and to this day an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, arrived in New york harbor after being shipped across the atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. the copper and iron statue, was reassembled and dedicated in a ceremony presided over by U.s. President grover cleveland. Intended to commemorate the American Revolution and a century of friendship between the U.S. and France, the statue was designed by French sculptor FredericAuguste Bartholdi (who modeled it after his own mother), with assistance from engineer Gustave Eiffel, who later developed the iconic tower in Paris bearing his name. The statue was initially scheduled to be finished by 1876, the 100th anniversary of America’s Declaration of Independence; however, fundraising efforts, which included auctions, a lottery and boxing matches, took longer than anticipated, both in Europe and the U.S., where the statue’s pedestal was to be financed and constructed. The statue alone cost the French an estimated $250,000 (more than $5.5 million in today’s money). Finally completed in Paris in the summer of 1884, the statue, a robed female figure with an uplifted arm holding a torch, reached its new home on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor (between New York City and Hudson County, New Jersey) on June 17, 1885. After being reassembled, the 450,000-pound statue was officially dedicated on October 28, 1886, by President Cleveland, who said, “We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected.” Standing more than 305 feet from the foundation of

its pedestal to the top of its torch, the statue, dubbed “Liberty Enlightening the World” by Bartholdi, was taller than any structure in New York City at the time. The statue was originally copper-colored, but over the years it underwent a natural color-change process called patination that produced its current greenish-blue hue. In 1892, Ellis Island, located near Bedloe’s Island (which in 1956 was renamed Liberty Island), opened as America’s chief immigration station, and for the next 62 years Lady Liberty, as the statue is nicknamed, stood watch over the more than 12 million immigrants who sailed into New York Harbor. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the statue was closed; its base, pedestal and observation deck reopened in 2004, while its crown re-opened to the public on July 4, 2009. (For safety reasons, the torch has been closed to visitors since 1916, after an incident called the Black Tom explosions in which munitionsladen barges and railroad cars on the Jersey City, New Jersey, waterfront were blown up by German agents, causing damage to the nearby statue.) Today, the Statue of Liberty is one of America’s most famous landmarks. Over the years she has been featured in numerous movies and countless photographs, and has received millions of visitors from around the globe.

“summercourt triangle” turns cars Into “christine”

a

sLeePy cORNwaLL village just outside Newquay has seen a series of ‘possessed’ automobiles as locks turn on and off by themselves Vehicles in Summercourt Cornwall are seeming to develop minds of their own, just like the titular classic car in the 1983 movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, which starred a sentient and violent automobile named “Christine”. The village has been dubbed the ‘Summercourt triangle’ as 30 cars seem to have been struck by paranormal activity The owners of the cars have claimed their vehicles are “possessed” after their locking system began turning on and off on their accord, trapping one child inside and leaving many stranded without transport. The strange happenings began six months ago and have been explained by nothing more supernatural than radio interference. Mike Parris, an expert from car technology firm SBD, said remote locking systems are vulnerable to interruption and that the Cornwall incidents were not unique. He said: “Residents could try and keep a log of when they have difficulties, the locations

which are worse and anything which helps to pinpoint it. These things are notoriously difficult to pin down.” Lin Howard, an affected motorist, said her car automatically locked her child inside, she said: “Another driver has not been able to start their car, they have to go home, get back to school, get someone to look at the car, then after a period of time it starts again.” Wendy Malham, another resident, added: “I got in the car to drive to school and the locks were going on-off, on-off, like it was possessed. I can’t actually lock my car anymore because the alarms go off. Another driver has not been able to start their car.”

slOW cOOKer hellooo sparklettes! sWeet GarlIc chIcKen h Ow aRe we all this week??? I’m very well and thanks for asking!!! This week has been a very busy one for me at work, the afternoon live entertainment sessions have hit a new high with the combination of our veteran entertainer Marc Craig teaming up with the unstoppable Pip Brown!!! These two together are just amazing...so much so there’s been comparisons made to Ant and Dec and more accurately Tenerife’s own legendary Wildboyz from when they were in their prime...of course Marc was a founder member

who’s guilty of owning a slow cooker and never using it? I most definitely fall into that category. to be honest there are a lot of wonderful easy recipes that you can make in the dust collecting appliance, you can set it, go to work and when you get home there’s no need to start getting pans out!

I have seen some strange slow cooker recipes, one being homemade bread - apparently the results were amazing, I will have to give that a try I think! This week I am sharing with you a great easy recipe, that’s tasty and can be left for hours. Next week I will be giving you part 2 to our slow cooker experience with recipes you can make in the slow cooker – but with a twist – YOU CAN’T EAT THEM!

Ingredients: 4-6 chicken breasts 100g packed brown sugar 100ml vinegar (I used apple cider vinegar) 75ml lemon-lime lemonade

2-3 Tablespoons minced garlic 2 Tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper 2 Tablespoons corn flour 2 Tablespoons water Red pepper flakes (optional)

Directions: Spray slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Place chicken (frozen, thawed or fresh) inside slow cooker. Mix together brown sugar, vinegar, lemonade, garlic, soy sauce, and pepper together. Pour over chicken. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 4 hours. Take chicken pieces out of slow cooker (mine basically fell apart) and pour remaining sauce into saucepan. Place saucepan over high heat. Mix together corn flour and water, pour into saucepan, and mix well. Let sauce come to a boil and boil for 2-3 minutes, or until it starts to thicken and turns into a glaze. Remove from heat and let sit for a minute or two (it will continue to thicken as it cools down). Sprinkle red pepper flakes on top if desired. This can be served over rice or noodles, I also like it with a baked potato on the side (It’s good on top of the potato too!)

of the islands favourite duo...All though I must say, I’ve been getting quite involved in the performances...so much so that I’ve suggested we make it official and call ourselves The Wild Ones!!! From Wild Ones to Young Ones... I was sorry to hear the sad news that comedy actor Rik Mayall passed away on Monday... he made millions, including me, cry tears of laughter over the years with outrageous characters... go make them giggle up there too Mr. Mayall ya B’stard!!! R.I.P. Apart from having a ball at work, I’ve had a bit of luck this week...a painting that I found lying around

my country manor... turns out authentic (like me)...and it’s worth £30 million!!! Sssh... I can’t tell you who painted it but if you put together the band who sang “losing my religion” and Katy Perry’s ex-husband...you can probably work it out!!! Speaking of good news, congratulations to Collabro, who won Britain’s Got Talent 2014!!! Well done guys, but I’m sorry...my favourite still has to be the dancing granny...with guy and his... swimming cap!!! So, until next time... keeep sparkling!!!

Fast Fuzz!

World’s fastest police car unveiled

I

t looks more suited for a Formula One racing track than for chasing down a red light jumper in Taunton, this is thought to be the quickest police car in the world! Top Gear’s ‘fastest’ car was unveiled by Avon and Somerset police as a new weapon to deter speeding motorists The Ariel Atom already holds the record for the quickest lap round the Top Gear track but now it has also become the world’s fastest panda car. The 155mph car has been painted in the force livery and fitted with special aerodynamic blue lights. Able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in under 2.5 seconds, the £38,000 vehicle will be used by traffic officers to deter speeding motorists and encourage motorcyclists to slow down.

The vehicle is able to outrun the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Polizia used by Italian officers, the Audi R8 driven by German police, and the Ferrari FF used in Dubai. Avon and Somerset Police borrowed the Atom from local manufacturer Ariel for the summer while it promotes a new road safety campaign aimed at slowing down speeding motorcyclists. It is hoped the eye-catching machine will dissuade bikers from riding dangerously as it is displayed at promotional events across the south west. Andy Parsons, a Roads Policing Sergeant, who is involved in the project said: “I am really excited that Ariel has joined with us to bring Project SAFER RIDER to fruition, and I hope that the use of the Ariel PL1 with have a positive impact to promote Road Safety. To be safe, rider and machine need

Fiery Fiat!!

to work in harmony. When this happens it feels immediately right. When it doesn’t, things go wrong. Too many injuries and deaths are the result of rider error.” Simon Saunders, Director of Ariel said: “Our business is about going fast, very fast, but there is a time and a place. The Atom is designed to be driven to a racetrack, where you can drive to your limits in safety and in a professional environment designed for the purpose. The road really isn’t the place to explore your or your vehicle’s limits.” Motorcyclists are currently 35 times more likely to be killed in a road collision. While the car, which weighs just 612kg, is capable of keeping up with many high power road bikes, there are no plans to use it in operational police duties.

An average Italian runaround is transformed into 186MPH supercar thanks to 6.2-litre Lamborghini engine

I

talian mechanic Dini Gianfranco has transformed his Fiat 500 into a Lamborghini hybrid and created the world’s most minicar with 580 horsepower and top speed of 186mph. A 6.2L V12 engine from a Lamborghini Murcielago has given the mini-car seven times its original top speed and 32 times its original power. The 56-year-old mechanic who has been working on cars since the age of nine developed a passion for modifying and repairing motors when he worked as an after-school mechanics apprentice. Dini opened his own workshop in his hometown of Viterbo, Italy, in 1973 and has clocked up 3,000 hours completing the Fiat 500 Lamborghini, he said: ‘As a teenager, I began to customise a

Fiat 500, and installed an Autobianchi A112 Abarth engine with a five-speed gearbox. The idea to take the customisations to the next level came about when my son Leonardo joked about installing a Porsche engine in a Fiat 500 after visiting the 2006 Bologna Motor show. The next car was a Fiat 500 Ferrari v8 3.0L which was completed in December 2009 after two years of work. This led to even more appreciation from the public. After the Ferrari, we felt so driven to exceed ourselves, which led us to our most recent creation - the Lamborghini.’

otoring fanatics have turned vintage Mustangs and Corvettes into POOL TABLES

Muscle car fanatics, combining their love of iconic vehicles and the humble game of pool have fitted classic cars with pool tables! Engineers at Florida-based Car Pool Tables started by slicing their favourite cars, like Mustangs and Corvettes, in half. They then kit them out with green felt table tops, pockets and cushions. The 1959 Corvette pool table comes complete with working lights, chrome bumpers, trim, full size steel rims, white wall tires and chrome wheel covers with spinners.

They also designed a rare Shelby GT 350 version, 50 of which were signed by the firm’s founder Carroll Shelby. Potential buyers will need deep pockets of their own though, the car tables, have sold for as much as £60,000. A spokesperson for the firm said: ‘Each table is moulded directly from real collector’s cars. They are then painted and finished with real automotive paint, clear-coat, wet-sanded, and polished to showroom quality. Since 2009, our pool-tables have been purchased by collectors and seen all over the world.’ Beats being stuck in a traffic cue!

ary Lineker introduces live coverage of the world cup match between group c rivals colombia and greece, which takes place in the estadio Mineirao in Belo horizonte.

There will also be a look ahead to England’s first game, which takes place against Italy in Manaus later today. The Colombians are making their first World Cup appearance for 16 years, but Los Cafeteros are tipped to do well at the tournament.

Although the serious injury suffered by star man Falcao has disrupted their preparations, they still boast plenty of attacking flair, with the likes of Monaco’s James Rodriguez and Fiorentina’s Juan Cuadrado helping them to qualify in some style. Their creative skills will be needed against a Greek side who are notoriously tough to break down. Fernando Santos’s men are not to be underrated though – they reached the quarterfinals of Euro 2012 thanks to a surprise victory against Russia. Commentary comes from Simon Brotherton and Kevin Kilbane.

n this episode a muscle-mad macho man struggles to keep his nerves in check, an expectant dad goes all-out to make his wife feel comfortable in the birthing room, and a same sex couple are rushed into hospital ten weeks early. Marion, who’s 30, and Rachel, who’s 32, are like any other couple in their early thirties trying to start a family, although as Rachel says, ‘we can’t just have an early night and make a baby,’ so they shopped online for sperm. Using Marion’s eggs they based their decision on which donor had the most similar attributes

to Rachel and they ended up with twins. But at their 30-week hospital scan the couple are told that one of the twins is not growing properly and they need to return to Southmeads the next day for a C-section. Image-conscious Sarah, who’s 28, and her husband, 40-year-old personal trainer Rob, arrive at the delivery suite to begin the induction process. Sarah’s told she’s only allowed one birthing partner and chooses her husband over her mum: a move she begins to regret as Rob shows signs of impatience. They pass the time by discussing baby names but have very different ideas. Sarah reaches a compromise: if the baby comes before midnight, Rob gets to choose but any time after it’s her decision.

People, well another bonkers week of sport and this issue sees the start for the 2014 World cup finals in Brazil, cD Tenerife fans are finally put out of the misery, England’s World cup preparation ended with a very physical nil nil after facing the ‘nutters’ of honduras. nadal makes it three on the bounce at the french open, and lewis hamilton breaks down in montreal…. until next week Bonnet da Douche!!!

e

NgLaND’s FINaL waRM-UP game before they flew to Brazil for the world cup was disrupted by a dangerous lightning storm that forced the match to be halted as they were held to a draw by honduras. the game was stopped for over 40 minutes midway through the first half as bad weather hit the Miami area. But, when play resumed, boss Roy hodgson saw england last the pace well in fierce heat and humidity, although a feisty game against the physical hondurans lacked any rhythm. England should have won, with striker Daniel Sturridge missing England’s two best chances,

but ultimately Hodgson will have simply been delighted his players emerged unscathed from some rough treatment, which included Honduras defender Brayan Beckeles being sent off. Captain Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney were given 45 minutes each, while Everton midfielder Ross Barkley once again looked lively as he tries to make an impression on Hodgson ahead of Saturday’s opening World Cup game against Italy in Manaus. England left Miami for Rio de Janeiro after the game and can now enter the final phase of their planning for the World Cup, although the interruption for weather reduced the effectiveness of this exercise. Hodgson made 10 changes from Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Ecuador and went with the side many believe will start against the Italians on 14 June - but the first half was wrecked by that weather interruption. England should have been

ahead when slick link play between Rooney and his Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck left Sturridge with only Honduras keeper Noel Valladares to beat. But the Liverpool striker dragged his shot wide. And then, with dark clouds overhead and lightning flashing around the stadium, the players were taken off the field after 23 minutes by referee Ricardo Salazar. Salazar said he made the decision because there

were lightning strikes within two miles of the stadium. It is not uncommon in Miami and, after thunder and a torrential downpour, the players returned. Upon resumption, Honduras - who are in World Cup Group E - decided to turn the game into a dogfight as a succession of wild tackles endangered England. Gerrard was furious at a tackle from Luis Garrido that earned him a yellow card then Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre was similarly punished for a wild tackle on Sturridge, which he followed up by lashing the ball into the Liverpool striker. It was this in mind, perhaps, that Hodgson removed Gerrard and Rooney at half-time to introduce Barkley and Wilshere - with Everton’s youngster immediately in the action with a 20-yard shot that curled just wide. Left-back Leighton Baines, in particular, had taken some heavy punishment from Honduras and he was in the wars again after 65 minutes when he was caught by a dreadful aerial challenge from Beckeles, who had already been booked and was deservedly sent off. Sturridge had been lively but wasted another good chance with 15 minutes to go when he headed over from right-back Glen Johnson’s fine cross.

the heat Is On In Brazil e

UROPeaN teaMs like england and spain are preparing themselves for the arduous task of playing in the intense heat of Brazil in June, spanish striker Pedro Rodriguez is well aware of how draining the heat can be in Brazil, he got a

taste of the sweltering temperatures last year when spain played in the confederation cup, but he remains confident that the world cup champions can quickly adapt. Pedro said at a news conference last thursday: “It is very hot weather; it is

difficult. There were matches that, because of the time and the heat, it was difficult to acclimate to. We will find the same thing again. We hope to adapt as quickly as possible and to be in good shape to face this weather. These unfavorable conditions can hurt us.” The Barcelona star said his teammates are “working very hard” in practice and “the feelings are good.” Spain plays its Group B opener against the Netherlands on June 13 in Salvador, then takes on Chile and Australia. Spain beat the Dutch in the 1010 final, defender Cesar Azpilicueta said: “I think the goal of the group is to be at 100 percent for that first game, which we know will be very hard.”

Baffling “Sports” From Around the World

Shin Kicking is part of the Cotswold Games, a four hundred year-old tournament that claims to be the oldest Olympiad in the world, and, because of the absence of synchronized swimming, it may also have a valid claim to be the best. There’s rarely a sport more perfectly summed up by its name. Shin Kicking is a contest between two fighters as to who can knock the other down by the simple, honest method of kicking the ‘you know what’ out of one another’s shins. If you cause your opponent to fall, you earn a point. Bouts are won on a best-of-three basis, the winner going through to the next round. Call me unadventurous, but I think I’d probably throw the fight immediately after some hairy, beefy, rosy cheeked English farmer demolished my wizened, tanned shins with one swing of a sheep-dung covered boot. Competitors are allowed to cram hay down their pants to try and protect their shins, but what with hay having the protective qualities of a soggy tissue, I can’t picture it doing much good. The Cotswold Games began in the early 1600s when a local Solicitor called Robert Dover organized the games as a protest against the rampant growth of Puritanism. Because if anything is going to make those prudes lighten up it’s the horrific breaking of another man’s shins. An Interesting Fact: In the games early days, dueling was an event. In one fight between Sir German Poole and a Mr. Hutchinson, Poole sliced off three of Hutchinson’s fingers before Hutchinson even drew his sword. Hutchinson responded by slicing off Poole’s nose, and the gruesome turn of events probably short-circuited plans to combine the events by strapping knives to contestant’s shoes during the shin-kicking event.

THE FRENCH SAY ‘BONNET DA DOUCHE’ TO REGGAE, REGGAE SAUCE

Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud scored as France beat Jamaica 8-0 in their final World Cup warm-up match on Sunday. Didier Deschamps’ side led 3-0 at half-time through goals by former Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, Blaise Matuidi and Karim Benzema. Matuidi and Benzema were also on target in the second half, with Giroud and an Antoine Griezmann double completing the rout. France face Honduras (I wish them luck), Switzerland and

Ecuador in Group E. Real Madrid midfielder Benzema was particularly impressive as the French showed they can absorb the loss of Franck Ribery, who misses the World Cup with a back injury. Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris, Manchester United’s Patrice Evra, Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho and Newcastle’s Moussa Sissoko were all in the starting line-up. Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna and Queens Park Rangers’ Loic Remy came on as second-half substitutes.

Rafael Nadal beats Novak Djokovic to win ninth French Open title

R

afael Nadal saw off the threat of Novak Djokovic for another year to win his ninth French Open title and a record fifth in succession. The Spaniard, 28, coped better in hot conditions as he won 3-6 7-5 6-2 6-4 in three hours and 31 minutes. Nadal is the first man ever to win a major title nine times, taking his Grand Slam total to 14. The victory also means he will remain world number one ahead of Djokovic. “In matches like this every moment is crucial. Playing against Novak is always a big challenge, I had lost against him the last four times,” Nadal said on court. “I feel sorry for him today he deserves to win this tournament.” It is the third year in a row that Nadal has ended Djokovic’s hopes of winning the one Grand Slam title he lacks, with the Serb in particular struggling on a stifling Parisian afternoon and ending with a double fault on match point. “Congratulations to Rafa and his team, it is incredible to win this tournament nine times,” Djokovic said. “It was an emotional day. I have tried with all my power, my strength, my capacities but Rafa was the strongest on court.” Nadal extended his incredible run at Roland Garros, to 66 wins and just one defeat in the last 10 years. That record looked under threat when he dropped the first set as his usually fearsome forehand let him down, five errors handing Djokovic

the initiative. Both men had to work hard in temperatures of around 27C, and Djokovic was the first to ask for iced towels to wrap around his neck at the changeovers. Nadal finally made his move when he broke for 4-2, only to lose his advantage straight away as the nervous errors returned in the following game. Djokovic had won their last four matches but taking on Nadal in a fiveset contest on Court Philippe Chatrier is a very different kind of test. The 27-year-old Serb faltered badly with a tie-break in sight, offering up a double fault and a forehand error before Nadal smacked a forehand winner to level the score. It was a huge blow to Djokovic’s hopes and he faded further in the third set. After dumping a straightforward volley in the net to lose serve in game two, the second seed took some tablets at a changeover in an attempt to improve his condition. Nadal scented victory once again, breaking twice on his way to the set and leaving Djokovic to stare in disbelief at Coach Boris Becker in the stands after one error. Another poor volley and a wild backhand into the tramlines saw Djokovic fall 4-2 down in the fourth, but Nadal was now having his own issues, bending over apparently in some discomfort and badly mistiming a smash to give the break straight back. With cloud cover giving Djokovic some respite from the sun, he was showing signs of launching a renewed assault only to falter with his opponent under pressure. A terrific backhand pass helped Nadal to match point and Djokovic, disrupted by a call from the crowd, fired his second serve long to leave the Spaniard on his knees in his familiar celebratory pose. Nadal in numbers • Nine Roland Garros singles titles (2005-08 & 2010-14) • First to win five successive French Opens (2010-14) • 14 Grand Slam titles (nine Roland Garros titles, 2008 & 2010 Wimbledon, 2009 Australian Open, 2010 & 2013 US Open) • Current French Open winning streak of 35 matches • 66-1 win-loss record at Roland Garros • 90-1 win-loss record in bestof-five-set matches on clay • 45 career clay court singles titles (2nd on list behind Guillermo Vilas - 46 titles) • Three clay-court titles in 2014 (Rio de Janeiro, Madrid-1000, Roland Garros)

hodgson upbeat on Oxlade-Chamberlain fitness

e

NgLaND MaNageR Roy hodgson says midfielder alex Oxlade-chamberlain will be fit for the world cup finals. the arsenal player suffered knee ligament damage in england’s 2-2 draw with ecuador on wednesday. speaking after saturday’s 0-0 draw against honduras - their final warm-up game - hodgson confirmed the 20-year-old would remain part of his plans. “I think he will make the tournament without a shadow of a doubt. that’s good news,” said hodgson. england ended their preparations with a stalemate against honduras, who were reduced to 10 men in the second half following the dismissal of defender Brayan Beckeles for two yellow cards. They had to deal with a physical approach from the opposition and a 40-minute stoppage early in the game because of lightning. But England had chances to win, notably through Daniel Sturridge, and Hodgson is happy at how his squad is shaping up going into the opening Group D game against Italy next Saturday. He added: “Honduras was quite physical and it was one of the most frustrating games I have been involved in for a long time”. I thought the

D tempo of our play and effort to score in the second half was commendable. I will take the draw and take the fact we got away without any injuries. We go to Brazil in the right frame of mind. “It’s time for the real thing now.” Captain Steven Gerrard said he was relieved England had avoided injuries so close to the tournament. “There were some horrific tackles a week before the World Cup,” he said. “But we have got another 90 minutes under our belts in hot conditions. “We could have done better but there’s a week to go and we will be ready.”

I am an armchair supporter of CD Tenerife due to work commitments, but I cannot understand how CD Tenerife’s season crumbled in a spectacular way, six consecutive 1-0 defeats and on Saturday evening to add insult to injury the season fizzles out with a 3-0 away defeat, But good news for CD Tenerife B, they had a great result a week last Sunday with a 3-0 home win in their Tercera

Division playoff against CD Varea. But what a game the return leg must have been….. CD Varea win their home leg to win five goals to Tenerife’s three (5-3) CD Tenerife B march on yet again with an aggregate win of 6-5. Commiserations to Mensajero, who despite leading there playoff from last week four goals to the good, they were rocked to their boots when Atletico Astorga dished out the same and scored four goals without reply. Mensajero lost the penalty shootout 4-3.

PaIN’s NatIONaL teaM will receive 720,000 euros if they win the world cup for the second time in a row - and it is making politicians angry.

Vicente del Bosque’s men will get more than double their Brazilian and German counterparts would receive if they keep the trophy in Spain, The bonus deal was struck between Captain Iker Casillas, vice-captain Xavi and Jorge Perez, the secretary general of the Spanish football federation. if they become the first ever country to win the World Cup twice in a row The winning country will receive 27 million euros, a 37% increase on Fifa’s prize money in 2010, and the players will be given 20% more in bonuses than they received four years ago. The players and members of the technical staff will be 720,000 euros richer, rwhile Brazil players will each get 330,000 if they win it and the Germans would receive 300,000. The amount of money has become a controversial subject in Spain, with one politician tweeting: “Spain will pay more than double the

Bonus that Germany will for the Football World cup. Are we twice as rich as Germany?” However, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has defended the sum, telling a press conference: “We want it all to be entirely transparent. Hopefully we’ll win and we can bill the treasury for what we’ve earned”. While Juan Mata insisted the money is no extra incentive for him. “Sometimes this subject is used against us, but I play with the same dream that I’ve had since I was a boy of winning the World Cup. I don’t think about anything else. It’s not within my control to decide whether it’s made public or not.” And Spanish football’s governing body insist it is a fair amount: “We see it as an investment. We share what Fifa pays us with the players.”

iEGo coSTA made a successful comeback from injury as David Villa scored twice to give Spain victory over El Salvador in their final World Cup warm-up game. Costa, who looks set to join Chelsea from Atletico Madrid, had not played since aggravating a hamstring injury in the Champions League final. The striker played for 73 minutes and was fouled for an early penalty which Cesc Fabregas missed. Villa came off the bench to increase his record goal tally for Spain to 58. The 32-year-old, who an-

nounced this week he was leaving Atletico Madrid to join Major League Soccer team New York City, headed in after an hour and then fired home in the sixth minute of injury time. “We know that Villa, in tight spaces, is one of the best forwards in the world,” said Coach Vincente Del Bosque. “The feelings are good and we are optimistic about the start of the competition.” Spain kick off their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on 13 June and also face Chile and Australia in Group B.

eD BULL’s Daniel Ricciardo passed Nico Rosberg’s struggling Mercedes with two laps to go to win his first race in a thrilling canadian grand Prix. Rosberg held on to take second ahead of Red Bull’s sebastian Vettel, helped by a last-lap safety car following a crash between sergio Perez and Felipe Massa. Rosberg’s team-mate Lewis hamilton retired with a brake failure and is now 22 points behind in the championship. McLaren’s Jenson Button stunningly took fourth with a late charge.

The Englishman passed Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso on the penultimate lap. It was a sensational end to a race that was full of incident and tension, as Mercedes’ early season domination of Formula 1 came to an end in the most remarkable of circumstances. The first part of the race ran to form, with Rosberg narrowly ahead of Hamilton as the two Mercedes drove off into a race of their own. Rosberg held on through the first pit stops but was quickly closed down by Hamilton thereafter. But just as the Englishman appeared to be setting up to pass his team-mate for the lead, both cars suffered a simultaneous loss of hybrid power from the engine. Hamilton took the lead during the second pit-stop period after Rosberg was delayed by a problem fitting a front wheel at his stop. But on the very next lap Hamilton ran wide at the hairpin, a symptom of the total brake failure he was about to experience at the next corner. That put Rosberg back into the lead and although Perez closed up, closely tracked by the Red Bulls; he was unable to pass, as he too was managing fading brakes. But with Rosberg just managing to hold off Perez and the Red Bulls, Ricciardo began to apply pressure to the

Mexican, and passed him around the outside into Turn One with four laps to go. The Australian, who joined Red Bull at the start of this season and has generally had the measure of his four-time world champion team-mate, quickly closed on Rosberg and passed him down the long final straight on lap 68 of 70. “I’m still in shock. This is ridiculous,” said Ricciardo. “The race really came to life the last 15, 20 laps. We saw Hamilton had a problem and then Rosberg was slow on the straights. “I was struggling to get past Perez and we finally got a run out of the last chicane and got him into Turn One and then a couple of laps to go I found myself in the right spot to get the DRS. Amazing.” Red Bull team Principal Christian Horner said: “Amazing, the boy’s driven brilliantly all year. The move of the race was around the outside of Perez a few laps from the end.” The race came to an abrupt end at the start of the final lap when Massa misjudged an attempt to pass Perez and his Williams crashed into the Mexican’s Force India as they braked for the first corner. The two cars narrowly missed hitting Vettel’s Red Bull as they spun into heavy impacts with the tyre wall. Both were taken to hospital for precautionary brain scans after sustaining impacts of 27G, but have since been discharged. In the excitement, it was not immediately clear how Button, who was eighth with six laps to go, passed both Hulkenberg and Alonso for fourth.

First International Win for Gibraltar!!!

G

ibraltar coach Allen Bula believes his side’s midweek win over Malta shows they can give the likes of Scotland a fright in their Euro qualifying debut. Indeed, Bula is sticking by his assertion that the British Overseas Territory can reach the play-offs. “I said it before the draw was made - my target is the play-offs - and I’m still sticking to that,” he said. “I think we’ll give a good run to every single nation we play and I think they are starting to look at us now.” “After the Germans, every other team is going to start nicking points off one another” Gibraltar are bottom seeds in Group D and will face Germany, Georgia, Poland, Scotland and Republic of Ireland in the 2016 qualifiers. And the 1-0 defeat of Malta in Faro was the debutants’ first victory in an official international match since becoming Europe football’s newest member country. “It was a very good result and I was delighted as it was the last game before the qualifiers, so we are going into the right note towards

the match against Poland,” Bula told BBC Scotland. “It was very important for them to realise what they are capable of doing. “Since we tried to get into Uefa and then joined Uefa, the critics have always been there for us as the smallest nation, saying we’d become a team that loses 10-0 or 15-0 all the time. Lincoln Red Imps winger Kyle Casciaro scored Gibraltar’s historic winner against Malta “So it was important to get them in the right frame of mind and the players realizing that nothing is impossible.” With a population of only 60,000, Gibraltar have to rely on mainly part-

Maria Sharapova beats Simona Halep to win French Open M aria Sharapova drew on her fighting spirit once again to beat Simona Halep in a dramatic final and win her second French Open title. The Russian came through 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 in three hours and two minutes at Roland Garros. It was the fourth match in a row that saw Sharapova clinch victory in a final set. She has now won five Grand Slam titles, taking her to joint-11th on the Open era list alongside Martina Hingis. “This is the toughest Grand Slam final I have ever played and all respect to Simona, she played an unbelievable match today,” said Sharapova.

Halep, 22, might have been playing in her first Grand Slam final but she pushed the 2012 champion to the limit. Sharapova had been a study in intensity throughout the fortnight in Paris, happy to take on the mantle of favourite after Serena Williams’ early exit, and in the end her will to win pulled her through as much as her ability. Five games in a row put her in control of a high-quality first set that lasted 57 minutes, as her weight of shot just held

55

the balance of power over Halep’s speed of foot. But the Romanian fourth seed was fighting back in the latter stages and did so again in the second set, the pace and angles she created keeping Sharapova off balance. Halep won a stunning rally at 4-4, deuce that had the crowd chanting “Simona! Simona!” - Not for the last time - but she was broken straight back thanks to a cruel net cord and it came down to a tie-break. It looked as though the experience of Sharapova, playing in her ninth Grand Slam final, was about to tell when she moved 5-3 ahead, but under constant pressure from Halep she produced four errors in a row. For the first time since 2001, the French Open women’s final would require a final set, and the Court Philippe Chatrier erupted as they played on into a third hour. There was a time violation for Sharapova early in the decider as her fragile serve became an ever-lengthier process, and she let a lead slip for the second time in the set with a double fault at 4-3. Halep might have felt it was her moment, but Sharapova has learnt to move on swiftly from such errors. She played

a brilliant return game, backhand and forehand winners taking her 5-4 in front, and as the match time passed three hours dug deep to at last find a clinical service game. The Russian thumped away a drive volley to earn three match points and then sent down a serve that Halep could only return into the tramlines, as Sharapova willed it to drop wide. “It’s such an emotional victory for me in my career,” added Sharapova. “I have been in many Grand Slam finals, and everyone feels very different. As I get older I appreciate those situations so much more.” Halep admitted: “It was really tough before the match to manage the emotions. It was a big match for me the first final of a Grand Slam. “I tried just to stay relaxed, to say that it’s a normal final, like a small tournament.”

time players and have to play their home matches in Portugal because of the lack of a suitable stadium on the “Rock” south of Spain. However, Kyle Casciaro’s 66th-minute winner against Malta meant they made the breakthrough after draws with Slovakia and Estonia and defeats by the Faroe Islands and Estonia. “On the pitch, there were tears all over the place,” said Bula. “It really touched me. The players were crying, the technical team was crying. I will be crying if they beat Scotland……

Knickers To Training! The Spanish national team, who were in Washington DC last weekend, ahead of a friendly with El Salvador at FedEx Field, took a break from training, Sergio Ramos accompanied Pepe Reina, Andres Iniesta and Pedro to a mall, where they all paid a visit to Victoria’s Secret to buy sexy lingerie... presumably for the women in their lives and not each other!! The paparazzi caught footage of the defending world champions leafing the the shelves of bras and silk panties, with Sergio Ramos getting some panty-based assistance from a sales clerk, for what is presumably a gift for his baby mama Pilar Rubio and if it’s not, won’t he be in trouble! All four players left the store with a purchase, which is great news for Spanish fans: a team that buys panties together wins World Cups together, although considering La Roja’s strict pre-match sex ban, maybe they should until after the tournament to present their gifts..or of they do hand them over, at least wait to try them on!
