What a fabulous night we had here at Vivo for the Tenerife Pool Super league Awards Ceremony on Tuesday. I am not a pool player, well only when I have over indulged in the cooking sherry, but I have to say, some of the players in this league are extraordinary. Many of them come down to Vivo on a regular basis to practise, and I have seen some shots potted that defied belief, so to be part of their

Tenerife Weekly - 2nd August 2013 - 8th August 2013 Presentation Night was an honour for everyone at Vivo. They had some incredible acts as entertainment for the night, including our very own Marc Craig, Jacqui Peters with her Shirley Bassey Review, the compere was Magsy and guitar and vocals supplied superbly by Lee. There were some tremendous cups to be won, and I am very proud to say that Vivo were the Blue Division Winners. A great night was had by all and we thank everyone who came and made it such an enjoyable event. See pages 28-29 for the winners list. I would also like to invite you all to

round of this year’s wave championships after the Gran Canarian round was cancelled due to poor wind and waves.” So what are the different types of competition? “Freestyle is over flat water, Slalom is more like racing, but I compete in the wave competition which is more of a surfing style involving jumps and rides. The top 32 men and top 16 women will take part here, we get a 12 minute spell to impress the judges with our two best rides and two best jumps counting, it’s a great formula because bad moves and falls don’t have to ruin our rounds so it encourages us to push ourselves to the limit.” Adam is steadily improving, 25 is a good age and after a strong season he is now seeded in the top 10. “This is only my second year of international competition, it takes time to learn tactics but in El Medano I know the waves well and can use that to my ad-

competition This week’s The Car People Competition had another great response, with loads of correct answers to the question; What car did Elwood & Jake Blues (Dan Aykroyd & John Belushi) drive in the film “The Blues Brothers”? The answer is a 1974 Dodge Monaco. Congratulations go to Thomas Hallam who was the lucky winner. We look forward to seeing her with her family at the Sunday Carvery at Vivo, where

Dear Editor

I have lived here in Tenerife for nearly eight years and I find myself getting fined more & more by the traffic police, Guardia mostly.

Thursday afternoon I was coming down the road from San Miguel to Las Chafiras on my way home to Playa Paraiso. I was bringing my fishing gear from my container on my land to my home when I was stopped at a check point they booked me for having the rods along the inside of the car it was a 200 euro fine but 100 if paid within 28 days.

I would like you to let other people out there know so that they do not get booked for carrying goods in their car on the passenger seat or the back seat. It so happens that my car is a Berlingo and I have to pay commercial insurance please try and find out if there are any other strange laws we the Brits don’t know about so I don’t find out the hard & the costly way. Yours Peter Andrews.

P.S. Thank you for the lovely Sunday meal me my wife & two friends enjoyed for winning the car competition my friends said they will go back when there family come over to visit they were very impressed with the food and nice service.

vantage. After here the next rounds are in Denmark, Germany, South Africa, Hawaii, and Chile, I have four boards so have to be careful to use the airlines that do good deals on sports equipment; I once got hit with a £1,000 surcharge for excess weight.” It all sounds like an expensive sport. “I’m lucky to have good sponsors, I help to develop boards for Point 7 and ride a Patrik board, they are basically styrofoam, glass fibre, and resin. As well as their help, Ion sponsors my clothes, Swox my suncream, and the Recovery physio centre in El

Medano look after my body. There is money in the sport now; this Tenerife event has a pot of 35,000 euros.” The thrills also bring a few spills but Adam shrugs them off. “I’ve had a few injuries, torn knee ligaments, twisted spine, and dislocated my ankle bone. Fitness is very important; I do a couple of hours gym work a day and spend three to four hours on the water as well.” All the action at the PWF World Cup is free to watch, the Playa El Cabezo beach is around the headland beyond the pier and sandy beach. On

Saturday 3rd the competition should start around 1pm after registration and equipment checks, after that they will be starting mid morning making the most of the wind and waves. With good conditions they will finish a day or two before 9th August so keep an eye on the Tenerife Weekly Facebook page for updates or follow the scoring at www.pwaworldtour.com. It’s a spectacular sport, there will be announcements and updates in several languages, and the social scene surrounding the contest makes El Medano the place to be.

NEwS ON Warnings issued for THE ROCK energy Certificate Scams

A 45-year-old British tourist identified as Sean Breigdeman from Liverpool is in hospital after being found in the bathrooms at Tenerife Sur airport with head injuries. The incident took place shortly before 6pm last Tuesday just after Mr Breigdeman arrived in Tenerife on a Ryanair flight, apparently to attend a family wedding: he was to meet up with his partner and her family here. He sent a text to those who were to meet him to say he had landed, but some sources say that he was not discovered until 6pm on Wednesday, a full 24 hours later, and that the family had been frantically searching for him in the meantime. After being discovered, he was initially transferred to hospital in Playa de las Américas, but was transferred to Candelaria hospital’s intensive care unit due to the severity of his injuries. He is currently in a coma – induced, though the hospital says he was already in a coma when admitted; medical sources say his head wounds are unlikely to have been accidental, and that condition is so critical that they are not confident that he will ever fully regain consciousness. Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil continues its investigation. now the money is in place, the Tenerife Ports Authority has confirmed that the European Commission has approved some 67m Euros representing 27.5 per cent of the cost of the project. 5m Euros has already been advanced, and the rest will be here later this year. Approval was granted on Tuesday 24th July, and there is now nothing in the way – not financial, environmental, or legal – of the mega port. A week or so ago Arona Ayuntamiento announced that due to the increase of abandoned animals on the municipality’s streets, the refuge centres were overflowing, and that it had participated in a meeting with the the Cabildo and the neighbouring ayuntamientos of Adeje, Arona, Granadilla de Abona, Guía de Isora and San Miguel de Abona to discuss the burgeoning problem and what could be done about it. It was left to the Policía Local, however, to announce that Arona’s dog collection services will now be reduced to weekdays only, with the weekend patrols removed. emergency services have found the body of a 50-year-old woman in her car in La Orotava. The grim discovery was made just on Tuesday morning after a passer-by spotted the woman in callejón del Pino, on the La Orotava to La Montañeta road via La Luz. Paramedics could do no more than confirm the woman’s death at the scene, and the Guardia Civil is now investigating.

Directors of the Bayer Company delivered 400 ant parasitic collars for animals at del Centro de Protección Animal “Tierra Blanca”, located on the farm in Fasnia to the Cabildo’s President, Ricardo Melchior. After thanking them for the donation, Melchior praised the work of the shelter, supported by the Cabildo and private entities such as Loro Parque and the President of SOS-Proyects, Renate ThyssenHenne. Tierra Blanca Animal Protection Centre facilities include two warehouses with a total area of 2,600 square meters with compartments for animals, as well as outdoor patios and a veterinary clinic.

BRITonS, moving to Spain, need to do their homework on the new energy efficiency certificates to avoid being scammed. The Spanish government introduced the certificates last month for anybody selling or renting a property. Under the new legislation, a property must be rated for energy efficiency by a registered assessor, much like energy performance certificates in the UK.

Any home built before 2007 requires an energy efficiency rating, while those built after this date should already have one. However, industry experts have warned that Spain is rife with unqualified assessors offering cheap certificates while others are “guaranteeing’’ an A-rating which is illegal. Another scam involves issuing the certificate without visiting the premises. Jose Antonio Galdón, president of the General Council of Industrial Engineering of Spain, said: ‘’this is not acceptable in any way. The Royal Decree requires a skilled and authorised professional surveys the property.” Adding to the confusion is the fact that many people do not understand whether or not they need a certificate. Even though all new homes built after 2007 should already have the energy certificate, some Spanish regions were negligent in enforcing the legislation, so some new homes won’t have one. A certificate must be issued by an architect, engineer or a qualified technician who is authorised to undertake building projects and thermal installations for buildings. Not all architects and engineers are certified. The professional must belong to an

official provincial association and have a membership number. The price should be between 200 and 300 Euros per home (£170 and £260). Once a certificate has been issued it needs to be registered with the local Spanish authority. Procedures differ between regional governments with some

requiring a fee of about 30 Euros (£26). When the registration is approved, an energy label is issued which can then be made available to estate agents, prospective buyers or tenants. Anyone found in breach of the new legislation is liable to be prosecuted, with fines up to 6,000 Euros (£5,170).

nyone who lives, holidays, or has spent any amount of time in Tenerife, will, I’m sure, have noticed the multitude of Chinese restaurants, all you can eat buffets, food supermarkets, bargain stores and of course, Chinese people. With estimates of total world population being Chinese, ranging from a little less than 20 to almost 30 per cent, this shouldn’t come as a surprise and with an estimated 35 million Chinese nationals and immigrants living outside China, this means most places will have a Chinese community, but I was still curious. The answer may be closer than the Land of the Dragon, many of our Chinese Residents and neighbours may have come from Africa.

The Chinese Way

By Marc Craig

China - The Facts

First of all to help to explain why so many Chinese people leave their homeland, here are some interesting facts: Although at least 20% of world population is Chinese, China has only 7% of the global arable land and fresh water, in fact, half of China is uninhabitable. Although it’s economy is 2nd only to the U.S. And by 2036, it is estimated will be the most powerful economy in the world, most of its residents are poor and since the 1978 economic reforms, over 400 million people have been rescued from poverty. Two thirds (60%) of Chinese live in rural areas with contaminated water supplies,150 million are migrant workers, constantly moving to find work, yet 16 of the top 20 most polluted cities on Earth are in China, with extremely high cancer and respiratory disease related deaths. China is a one-party state with the Chinese Communist Party reigning supreme since 1949, in controls domestic and foreign policy as well as the media and legal systems and employs human censors and monitors that block citizens from viewing information online, viewed as critical or a threat to security-and Facebook is restricted and has been

Email Marc: marc@tenerife-weekly.com

blocked along with some 2,600 other websites. So, regardless of your views on

the policies of the People’s Republic, you can see why many people choose to leave their homeland in

search of a better future-but why Africa?

Nothing new

There is evidence of trade between the two countries as far back as the First century and the Silk Road, but its modern Africa-China relations I’m talking of here. Since 2008, the Chinese government has sent millions of workers, mostly from rural areas to Africa to work on railroads, factories and construction sites (amongst many other things) in the hope of profiting from the vast reserves of naturals resources that can be found in the continent. China now trades with Africa more than any other nation on Earth. And China needs trade relations like this not only with Africa, but also countries in the Middle East, Latin America and Central Asia, as China is a net energy importer, reliant on obtaining it’s oil and natural gas from outside sources.

From Africa to the Canary Islands

So, having established why there are many Chinese immigrants in Africa, but what brings many of them here? Unfortunately it seems that many of the Chinese run factories etc. in Africa that seem to offer hope for a better future life for those leaving their homeland, end up just being more of the same-hardship, poor working conditions, a lack of workers rights and low wages. So it’s hardly surprising that many workers, disillusioned with work conditions in Chinese run African industrial roles, choose to get out and seek out a better life on these holiday islands. Of course I’m not saying that every person of Chinese descent that you encounter during your time on Tenerife has escaped slave labour in some overworked African factory I’m sure there are many people here for many different reasons, but whatever they are, I for one am thankful for the added cultural diversity it brings to this multicultural archipelago.

BarranCo deL infierno to reopen

LAST week the Adeje council confirmed that, once negotiations with the Cabildo have been completed, the Barranco del Infierno, the fantastic walk in the borough, will reopen, hopefully before the end of 2013.

The Barranco was the second most visited natural attraction in Tenerife after Mount Teide, but was closed a number of years ago after a walker died following a rock fall. Since then the council have been working hard, in conjunction with the Cabildo and ex-

perts to, according to the mayor, “minimise the risks and make sure that any future visitors are informed as those risks”. According to councillor Gonzalo Delgado when the walk reopens anyone wishing to embark on the hike will be informed as to the new set of regulations regarding the walk, there will be a limit of 200 walkers a day, a new control point, guided routes which will reduce the numbers of individual walkers placing themselves in danger, among other new operational norms. The issue of a fee to do the walk has still to be confirmed, as well as the final decision regarding the management of the walk and the Barranco, which will either be assumed by the council or a private company.

Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a popular training ground for teams. With altitudes varying from 2,000 to 3,000 metres above sea level, the roads traversing Teide National Park provide the perfect challenge for cyclists and other athletes wanting to boost their performance in physically demanding environments. The island’s mild year-round climate also contributes to the perfect environment for training. Miguel Angel Santos, Chief Executive of the Tenerife Tourism Corporation, said: “Mount Teide is Spain’s highest peak and undoubtedly provides a very tough training environment that brings out the very best in athletes. It can be no coincidence that the last two winners of what is considered the toughest race in sport prepared for it in this territory. We hope that the island will continue to attract both top athletes and other sports enthusiasts following their example.” As well as the most demanding cycle routes on Teide National Park, Tenerife offers a wide network of mountain biking tracks of varying difficulty for those who simply want to enjoy a holiday on two wheels. Visitors can enjoy exhilarating rides

through amazing volcanic territories, lush valleys and pine tree forests, with the guarantee of mild, sunny weather all year round. Tenerife is rapidly becoming a training mecca for sporting champions, attracted by the island’s excellent facilities such as the renowned

T3 Tenerife Top Training centre, its benign climate and proximity to the UK. Many top athletes, including Olympic medallist Alistair Brownlee, and some of the UK’s Premier League football teams such as Everton or Newcastle have chosen the island for their training.

Things to do in Tenerife in August 2013

August is one of the hottest months in Tenerife when average temperatures in the south will be mid - high 20s and in the north low to mid 20s. For those who like to swim in the sea, it will be pleasantly warm because the sun will have been playing on it for around 10 hours a day and for those who prefer a swimming pool it will feel like climbing into a hot bath. If you’re searching for a family-friendly beach look no further than the southern resorts. Most of the beaches are lined with a great choice of restaurants and bars where you can watch the world go by if the weather gets too hot.

Thanks to the fantastic summer weather this month is filled with loads of fiestas and events. Probably the main ones are the Pilgrimage of the Virgen de Candelaria, the patron saint of Tenerife, she is also known as the Black Madonna and resides in the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria where she along with her Guanche guardians attracts thousands of visitors each year. The 15th August is one of the most important religious celebrations on Tenerife. Pilgrims travel traditional old pilgrimage routes on foot often spending the night before on the roads from La Orotava, Santa Úrsula even La Laguna heading to Candelaria drawn by their devotion to the Virgin. One of the strangest events in Tenerife is The Hearts of Tejina which dates back to the 1800s. Three areas of the village each construct their own giant hearts made out of fruit and flowers before parading them through the streets. Romeria de San Roque is another traditional event held in August were you have a chance to join local villagers as they celebrate their heritage. Everyone will be wearing traditional costumes there will be carts pulled through the streets by oxen and plenty of food and drink given away.

Other Celebrations in August are:

• 4th Pilgrimage of Hope in El Rosario • 4th Pilgrimage Maretas in Arico • Nuestra Señora de los Dolores First week of Augus • Realexo First Week of August • 10th Bajada de las Hayas (Pilgrimage of The Guancha) • San Cayetano at La Montañeta Second Week of August • 14th Procession of the Virgin of

e’Ve reported before how the Canarian tourism authorities are aiming to go up-market, and as part of their campaign

they have introduced a Vuele a brillar website – shine again www.vuelveabrillar.com. In other words, recharge your batteries and come to the Canaries as a

remedy against Señor Stress and Señora Routine. To entice us even more, they are offering everyone the chance of a free holiday in one of the islands just by registering

on the website, and we thought we’d pass on the opportunity to be a lucky winner and have a look at the other islands in the archipelago at the same time.

El hierro

La Gomera

The Canaries comprise the main islands of Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro in the western province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote in the eastern province of Las Palmas. There is a Christmas carol popular throughout the archipelago called Somos Siete – We Are Seven. We hope you enjoy this brief tour around these seven individual and quite distinctive paradises that make up the Canary Islands.

tenerife:

Two world heritage sites, a national park, and 42 protected natural areas are just some of Tenerife’s treasures. Dominated by El Teide, the third largest volcano in the world, set in the UNESCO world heritage site of the Teide National Park, one can go from snow in the crater to shop in the other UNESCO world heritage site of the ancient capital of La Laguna, or to sunbathe on the beaches in less than half an hour. Shopping, culture, sun, sea and sand. The world in microcosm.

La gomera:

A jewel of nature, La Gomera offers stunning scenery and some of

the vastest gorges the Canaries can offer, crowned with the ancient and UNESCO world heritage site of the Garajonay laurisilva forest stretching back millions of years to the Tertiary Age. The second smallest of the Canary Islands, it was Christopher Columbus’ starting point for his historic voyage to discover America in 1492. Here, alone in the Canaries, one can hear Silbo Gomero, the famous whistling language which can be heard over a distance of two miles.

La paLma:

Called the “isla bonita”, the beautiful island, La Palma is perhaps the greenest of the Canary Islands. With some impressive peaks and the clearest of night skies, it is home on the Roque de los Muchachos to the main astronomical observatory in the islands containing some of the world’s largest telescopes. Visitors can also walk in an enormous crater almost one and half kilometres deep surrounded by a spectacular pine forest in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. La Palma has been declared in its entirety a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

eL Hierro:

The smallest and westernmost of the Canaries, El Hierro is a diver’s paradise whose waters are said to be the clearest in the archipelago. Like La Palma, it has been declared in its entirety a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Over the last couple of years, El Hierro has offered another attraction, seismic activity that is thought to be the start of volcanic eruption which will produce another small mountain on this youngest of the Canaries which, until the discovery of America, was literally the end of the known world.

gran Canaria:

Gran Canaria is said to have the most diversity in the Canaries, with an incredible range of landscapes and microclimates resulting in one-third of the island being declared a UNESCO protected Biosphere Reserve. It also has over 30 protected natural areas, of which the Nublo Rural Park, Doramas’ Jungle, the Barranco de Azuaje, Tamadaba, and Pino Santo are distinguished by their beauty and exquisite flora and fauna. In addition, there are the Dunes of Mas-

Gran Canaria palomas, perhaps the island’s main landmark and the Canaries’ main tourist destination.

fuerteVentura:

Like El Hierro and La Palma, the whole of Fuerteventura is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Just 100 kilometres off the African coast, it is the second largest island in the Canaries after Tenerife. There are forts and castles at regular intervals along the coastline, the result of various Berber pirate expeditions against Fuerteventura in the sixteenth century. Apart from the famous Corralejo dunes themselves, Fuerteventura is renowned for its turquoise sea and extensive virginal beaches – some 150 kilometers of them – and for its Trade

Winds, making the island a surfers’ paradise.

LanZarote:

Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands, and the tortured volcanic landscape of the Timanfaya National Park together with the island’s soft white sand beaches creates a stunning monochrome appearance. The active volcanism creates a spectacular geyser show of water rushing into lava tubes and turning into steam, while also providing a safe (!) tour in a lava tube big enough to walk through. Another attraction not to be missed is the La Gería vineyards, a traditional wine area with a unique cultivation method involving individual vines planted in volcanic pits.

T

he president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Ricardo Melchior, opened an exhibition dedicated to the centenary of aviation on the island at Tenerife South Airport. Melchior was accompanied by the Deputy of the Government, Guillermo Díaz Guerra; the Mayor of Granadilla de Abona, Jaime González; the director of the airport, Santiago yus, and the president of the Association centenary of aviation in Tenerife, David Borges, together with a replica of the Bleriot XI, the first aeroplane which completed a manned flight in Tenerife.

The Island Corporation collaborated with the Asociacion Centenario de la Aviacion en Tenerife of the 100th anniversary of the flight landmark that took place on May 10, 1913, by French aviator Leónce Garnier who undertook the first flight over Tenerife as part of the May Day festivities. Leónce Garnier, based in Vitoria who regularly took part in air shows, arrived in Tenerife by boat from Cádiz and Las Palmas. He was accompanied by his wife, his mechanic and his plane, a model that Garnier showed at exhibitions, a Blériot XI built by the French. On Saturday, May 10th, 1913, at 5.30pm, Garnier made the first

flight in the aviation field in Güímar. He was accompanied by an engineer from Santa Cruz, who both enjoyed the seven-minute flight, in the clouds over Tenerife. The Blériot XI was a monoplane

created by Louis Blériot. The first unit was built in Neuilly, on the outskirts of Paris, at the end of 1908 and made its maiden flight at Issy-les-Moulineux on February 23, 1909, equipped with a 28 HP

forever facts and figures FoReVeR Living was founded in 1978 and now has over 9 million distributors in over 150 countries! In 2009 worldwide sales were $2.6 billion. The company owns and farms over 6,000 acres of aloe vera plantations in Texas, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Our manufacturing facility in Dallas, Texas covers some 273,000 square feet and can produce up to 6 million litres of bottled aloe vera per month. Our aloe vera is ‘organically grown’ (as opposed to ‘organic’) We are the only aloe vera company in the world to operate a totally vertically integrated system (i.e, from plant to product to customer) ensuring unmatched levels of quality control, assurance and customer service. In 1981 the International Aloe Science Council was formed and in early 1986 Forever’s Aloe Vera Gel and Aloe Berry Nectar became the first ever company to meet (and exceed) the Council’s high standards and authorization was granted to display the Seal of Approval on those products.

Some of our products also carry the Kosher symbol meaning that they meet the very rigid standards of purity and quality for the Jewish Community. Additionally, the Islamic Society of California certified some of the products, and The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America qualified some products as “Halal” meaning that they have met with their guidelines and do not contain any alcohol or questionable ingredients of animal origin. Forever is also proud to say that neither its products or their ingredients are tested on animals and we subscribe to the standards set by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). And finally perhaps the most astonishing fact is that Forever Living owns Southfork Ranch made famous

through the TV programme, ‘Dallas’ and its ‘infamous’ star, J. R. Ewing. Southfork Ranch is now one of the leading, privately owned tourist attractions in the USA! Remember that all products purchased in Tenerife have 30 day money back guarantee and all products purchased from www.lovealoe-forever.myflpbiz.com back in the UK have a 60 day money back guarantee. This is how confident Forever Living is in the quality of our products. This week we will be at Friends Bar, Golf del Sur on Friday evening between 3pm and 5pm, Chayofa Country Club at 11am on Sunday morning and our usual spot on Thursday at the Make Up Shop in Costa del Silencio – and of course, not forgetting the big Summer Fayre at Vivo’s on the 10th August.

Tenerife Website Continues To Grow

The Cabildo website to promote the knowledge of the landscape and heritage of the island has received more than 66,000 visits in just 18 months. The page, www.paisajetenerife.es jumped from 1,100 visits in March 2012 to 7.076 in June 2013. In total there have been more than 26,000 visits by people interested in the page since it was launched.

Last year, the Council introduced the initiative “Paisaje de Tenerife: Recursos Didácticos” - “Landscape of Tenerife: teaching resources, a website primarily aimed at teachers and students of compulsory secondary education to support teachers with specific reference to the Island landscape. The site is intended to contribute to knowledge, assessment, and involvement in the conservation of the landscapes of Tenerife, especially for those who are users and professionals interested in the future outlook of the island. The page is also helpful for those interested in the matter who simply wants to learn something more about the Island, or make use of the material for educational purposes in any other context. This on-line educational material is structured in different sections, allowing the user to accesses a conceptual dossier on the definition, the scientific study or the classification of the land-

scape, as well as other topics. In addition, there are maps, a photo gallery, links and supplementary materials to support and complete learning. Also you can to test their knowledge of pleasant way through six interactive activities, with such evocative names like “Guess where this is”, “Journey to the past” or “Improvement of the landscape”. It also includes a news section which provides useful information on the landscape in general, with special attention to news. Despite good figures, work is continuing to promote the sites use among secondary education teachers, trying

to get their opinions and contributions for the continuous improvement of this initiative. For the new school year, the Council is offering a follow-up, an educational workshop called “P@isajeando” that will address issues such as what is the landscape, what are their characteristics in Tenerife and is the relationship between citizens and the landscape in a direct way in the classroom. The Cabildo continues to promote the knowledge and enjoyment of the landscape, as a right of society, but also as a duty shared with respect to its preservation and improvement.

To make the ‘change’ of payment of fines and penalties possible the council voted for an economic Bylaw regulating economic sanctions, the vote is still pending approval before it comes into force. This measure can only be voluntary, and may not be imposed without the express consent of the penalized person, upon presentation of request by the interested party. The Councillor of the municipal services of this municipality in the South of Tenerife, Juan Rodriguez Bello (PSOE), explains that the motivation for this proposal is “to help those suffering economic problems who would not be able to meet cash penalties”.

The sixteenth Miss norte Beauty pageant was again, as predicted a huge success, attracting thousands of people who came to watch in the plaza San Agustín de Los Realejos. The show had been built into the Fiesta del Carmen celebrations and if it was not possible to get into the stage area, you could always watch it on the giant screens erected by the local council.

Liza Peter, representing Loro Parque was proclaimed as 2013’s Miss Norte. Her Court of Honour consisted of Omaira Ruiz, representing Restaurant La Sabina and Nimsi Rodríguez, sponsored by Espectáculos Tenerife. During the evenings events other titles were revealed including: • “Chica Shark”, Cristina Perera (Fígaro Peluqueros) • “Imagen Fraya”, Iris Bello (Isla de Mar)

• “Miss Elegancia”, Vaitiare Rancel (Ayuntamiento de Santa Úrsula) • “Miss Simpatía”, Yazmina González (Floristería Tegueste) The Mayor of the town, Manuel Domínguez reported to be surprised with the artistic content of Miss Norte and thanked the organisers for choosing Los Realejos as the venue for the event. He also said that it had been a powerful promotion platform for the municipality thanks to the videos produced by the organization, showing the

most emblematic places in Los Realejos. These reports will be shown on local television stations around the island. The gala took place over two and a half hours, during which there were parades with different musical performances, including one from a local group called La Vieja escuela with Danyssel, Ramón Pinto and Ely Qurbelo. The 25 finalists paraded in costumes courtesy of Dolores Cortés, the Canaria Buala Company and Francisco Fraya designer evening dresses.

www.tenerife-weekly.com By Colin Kirby ReLAXInG in his Los Cristianos apartment, Sir John Madejski doesn’t fit the assumed image of a high rolling self-made multi-millionaire businessman. There’s a calm assurance about him and a sense of pride in what he has achieved founding and building Auto Trader and taking Reading Football Club to two spells of premier League action in a magnificent modern stadium. The night before our interview Sir John was a guest at the CD Marino v CD Tenerife match and clearly enjoyed the experience as much as his first taste many years ago.

“One of my early memories was watching Racing Club Paris at Elm Park the original Reading ground, the glare of the floodlights added its own special magic to the game.” As his business empire grew Sir John was drawn back to Reading: “We had a box at Elm Park for Auto Trader guests, it was a bit of a joke that we would send sales staff to a game if they hadn’t hit their sales targets.” Maybe it was inevitable that the cash strapped club would turn to Sir John in their hour of need. “In 1990 they were struggling and the ground (built in 1896) was in a poor state, the Hillsboro report called for all seater stadiums and the club couldn’t afford to do the work needed. I was asked to buy the club; Robert Maxwell still had some shares (this was just after Maxwell’s bizarre plan to merge Reading and Oxford United as Thames Valley Royals). I had 24 hours to make a decision but after starting Auto Trader in the area I felt I wanted to give something back and did the deal.” Last year Sir John sold Reading to Russian Anton Zingarevich but was asked to stay on as Chairman, his 23 years at the club have seen incredible changes in the sport and at Reading. “We built the club up brick on brick and with careful recruitment of the right staff and players, the academy has been one of the proudest achievements, seeing our own players come up through the

The new stadium opened in 1998 and the 2005-2006 season was my crowning glory with promotion to the Premier League. Reading racked up a record 106 points in that glorious promotion season”. Many traditional supporters bemoan the big money status of football now but Sir John thinks we should be proud of the current status of English football: “Our football is one of the countries best exports and admired all over the world, the quality of players that now want to play in the Premier League shows how far it has come on. Everything now is at the highest level, players are finely tuned athletes, diets, and general fitness and conditioning are miles ahead of the days when I first got involved. Ever since I took over I have been asked is Reading for sale? I always say yes but millionaires need not apply billionaires only, it’s the nature of the game now.” Tenerife has always had a special lure for Sir John: “I first came to Puerto de la Cruz in the 70’s and in 1982 started to visit the south and bought an apartment in the Torres del Sol in Los Cristianos and later

Tenerife is such a relaxing place to be and the climate is the best you can get. That was my first match over here at CD Marino and the club made me very welcome, Marino were very plucky and had plenty of passion but Tenerife were too strong for them and that second goal (one of two by Sandro in a 4-0 win) was world class. So does that mean that 72 year old Sir John is semi retired? “I have cut back a bit on my business inter-

ests, I had 18 but now I’m down to just 10 but I’m looking to sell my 5 star Hotel in the Galapagos Islands near Ecuador. I like to keep active and while over here in Tenerife I walk down to Costa Adeje and back every day. Reading is in good hands now, Anton Zingarevich is just 31 and a fanatical football fan (as a 16 year old Anton studied in Wokingham and used to watch Reading play) and can take the club forward. I have plenty to keep me busy; I have a radio

Health and Safety At Work

17

By Sylvia from Crystal Clear Solutions

Spain is now taking note of EU Regulations and fining companies that do not comply.

Health and safety at work is one of the areas where the EU has had the biggest impact – with a solid legal framework covering the maximum number of risks with the minimum number of regulations. The Commission works with the European Agency for Health and Safety at Work and the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions to offer information, guidance and promote healthy working environments. Legal basis Directive 89/391/EEC on measures to improve safety and health at work: • Encourages improvements in occupational health and safety in all sectors, both public and private. • Promotes workers’ rights to make proposals relating to health and safety, to appeal to the competent authority and to stop work in the event of serious danger. • Seeks to protect workers and ensure that they return home in good health at the end of the day. Employees have a right to protection in the area of health and safety at work and this should be guaranteed by the employer. Employees’ rights to be informed and consulted about health and safety issues

are part of this protection. Where there are six or more employees, health and safety representation is provided through special health and safety representatives (delegados de prevención), chosen from among existing employee representatives. In larger companies or workplaces (50 or more employees) there is also a joint employee/employer health and safety committee (Comité de Seguridad y Salud). Employees have a right to participate in health and safety issues and that, once there are six or more employees, this is done through the prevention delegates or health and safety committee in bigger companies). Prevention delegates need to: • Work with management to improve action on risk prevention • Promote and encourage employees’ cooperation in applying health and safety regulations • Monitor compliance with health and safety regulations • Consulted by the employer in advance about work organisation and planning in the company, including the introduction of new technology and its health and safety impact • Organisation of health and safety and risk prevention measures, including the appointment of health and safety professionals or the

The number of emergency passports issued by British Consulates in Spain rose 11% last year to a total of 6005 – more than a fifth (22%) of the Foreign Office world total. The increase has triggered the British Embassy to warn British expats to take care of their passports, check the expiry date and renew them in good time.

In May alone this year[1] 493 emergency passports were issued to British nationals in Spain, including 280 as a result of theft (mainly bag theft), car break-ins, burglary and pick-pocketing. Of the 213 emergency passports issued for other reasons, 14% were because full passports had expired. Expatriates should check when their passports are due to expire and make a diary note to renew them up to nine months earlier, says Will Middleton, new Consular Regional Director for Spain. “Living overseas, it can be easy to think that you don’t need your passport or to forget to renew it. “But if you need to travel at

use of an external health and safety agency • Designation of employees responsible for reacting to emergencies • Provision of health and safety information to employees • Employees’ health and safety training. The consultation means that the employer must give the prevention delegates a period of 15 days to respond to proposals, unless a shorter period is necessary to prevent an imminent risk. If the employer decides reject the prevention delegates’ proposals, they must provide reasonable grounds. Prevention delegates have the right to: • Accompany health and safety professionals carrying out risk assessments as well as labour inspectors monitoring health and safety compliance, prevention delegates may point out concerns to the inspectors • Access to the appropriate documentation about working conditions; • Be informed by the employer about workers’ injuries and to examine where it have occurred; • Receive information from the health and safety professionals employed by the employer; • Visit workplaces and talk to employees; • Encourage management to take preventative measures and improve health and

safety arrangements; • Propose to the employee representatives that they agree to order a halt to work to avoid a serious and imminent danger. (It is the main employee representatives, rather than the prevention delegates who have normally the right to halt work – see below.) The joint health and safety committee also has a range of tasks and rights, and where there is no health and safety committee, these tasks and rights fall to the prevention delegates. The tasks are to: • Participate in drawing up, implementation and evaluation of risk prevention measures, looking at the choice of measures, activities of external agencies contracted by the company for health and safety, work organisation, new technologies and protective equipment • Promote effective risk prevention making proposals

for improvement and remedy failings. • The rights are to: • Direct knowledge of risk prevention situation in the company, through workplace visits; • Knowledge of all the necessary documents about working conditions and health and safety activities in the company; • Analyse any negative impacts on workers’ health in to establish causes and make proposals to avoid them • Given the annual report and proposals for action produced by the health and safety professionals in the company. The legislation highlights that the health and safety structures (prevention delegates and health and safety committees) do not remove the right of the existing structures of employee representation – the employee delegates (delegados de personal), the works council and the union

representatives – to defend the interests of the employees in the area of risk prevention. As a result it is these structures that normally have the right to halt work in cases of imminent and serious risk. If work is halted the employer and the health and safety authorities must be informed immediately and authorities have 24 hours to either confirm or lift the suspension of work. Both the health and safety structures and the existing structures of employee representation have particular rights with the health and safety authorities. They can call on the authorities if they consider that the employer’s efforts in the area of health and safety are insufficient. The prevention delegates and the health and safety committee (or existing representatives if the health and safety representatives are not present) should be informed of imminent inspections, so that they can accompany them, and given the results of these inspections.

Letting Your Passport Expire Can Cost More Than You Think More than 6,000 emergency passports issued in Spain last year

short notice, getting an emergency passport is both costly - currently 116 euros - and timeconsuming, which can add further to what may already be a stressful situation. And you will still need to renew your full passport when you get back.” Many people fear that by renewing a passport before it expires they will ‘lose out’ on validity they have paid for. In fact any remaining validity on your existing passport (up to a total of nine months) will be added to the new one. Circumstances in which British expatriates can find themselves needing emergency passports vary from the death or serious illness of a loved one through to job opportunities put at risk - like the resident who was offered an

interview in Germany only to discover his passport had expired. Others have been forced to cancel holidays of a lifetime for lack of a valid passport. One customer, who had already suffered five lost or stolen passports over the years and received a warning from the Passport Service, decided to keep the latest one safe by storing it in the freezer. Unfortunately it got wet, so he had to get yet another emergency one. Applying for a new passport is simple: download the application form and guidance notes from www.gov.uk/overseas-passports, complete them at home and send them off with your photographs. A new passport generally takes a minimum of four weeks from when the application is received.

The dry white Tagara wine, made by Bodegas Insulares Tenerife, has been awarded the Zarcillo de plata 2013 in the event of the same name held recently in which a total of 1,819 wines belonging to 469 wineries took part.

Island Minister of agriculture, livestock and fishing, José Joaquín Bethencourt, recalls that “once more the excellent quality of the wines that are produced in Tenerife is highlighted, wines that have won numerous awards both regionally and internationally”. The award-winning wine is combined with the Malvasia and Marmajuelo varieties of grape, which

have their origins from Ycoden-Daute-Isora. Sponsored by the International Office of the wine and the International Union of winemakers, the competition has established itself as the most important national competition of Spanish wines and the fifth in the world in terms of the number of samples. Other two wines by Bodegas Insulares Tenerife, Ancón malvasía aromática y el Ancón tinto barrica, were awarded gold and silver medals, respectively, in the official competition of Concurso Oficial de Vinos Agrocanarias, held last week. The event, organized the Canary Institute of agro-food quality, for the promotion of agricultural and agri-food products from the Canary Islands.

Mainland Commuters Held For News In 6 Hours In Gibraltar Brief T

he Government has complained to its Spanish counterparts after traffic was “deliberately” held up for up to six hours at the border with Gibraltar. Long queues formed at the border into the mainland from Gibraltar, which Spain claims as its own sovereign territory.

The regional government of Spain’s Balearic Islands statement says a wildfire is raging out of control in Mallorca, the popular Mediterranean tourist destination. Around 700 residents were evacuated early Sunday morning from the village of Estallencs as fires fanned by winds spread eastward along wooded hills. The fire started east of the port of Andratx and moved along the island’s northern forested parkland. 360 fire fighters and 26 water-carrying aircraft fought to combat the flames. The hills to the north of Mallorca, known as the Sierra de Tramontana, are of great natural beauty and many wealthy people, such as Hollywood actor Michael Douglas, are known to have acquired villas along its coastline. Spain’s National Statistics Institute said the economy contracted in the second quarter by a quarterly rate of 0.1% as a result of weak domestic consumer demand. That offset a solid export performance. It is Spain’s eighth consecutive quarterly fall. The contraction was better than the 0.5% fall recorded in the first three months of 2013. Spain has been in recession for most of the past four years following the collapse of its real estate sector in 2008. Despite 27.2 % unemployment and a bloated deficit, the government claims its reforms and austerity measures are working. It predicts the economy could start growing again in the third quarter. On a year-on-year basis, Spain’s economy was 1.7% smaller. Just because she is the Queen of Spain does not mean she is any different from any other doting grandma. On Monday, Queen Sofia, the wife of the reigning monarch King Carlos, was seen carrying a bag plastered with photos of her eight grandchildren. One side featured the faces of her four grandsons Felipe, Juan, Pablo and Miguel, while the other showed her four granddaughters, Victoria, Irene, Leonor and Sofia. She was at the Calanova Sailing School in Mallorca, Spain with her granddaughter Victoria and three of her four grandsons. The 74-year-old Queen was there visiting the coastal city to spend time with her two daughters, Infanta Elena, the Duchess of Lugo and Infanta Cristina, the Duchess of Palma de Mallorca. The Spanish police have said they have broken up a racket by fraudsters who converted ordinary cars to resemble deluxe models such as Ferraris and sold them over the Internet. Officers raided two garages where the conversions were carried out near the eastern city of Valencia. They arrested eight people suspected of converting and selling the cars and seized 10 cars -- 17 fake Ferraris and two imitation Aston Martins. “The supposed deluxe cars were advertised on two websites for about 40,000 Euros, compared to the more than 200,000 Euros that an authentic model would cost on the legal market,” the police statement said. The suspects “themselves made the fibre-glass pieces to transform the cars” and faked the badges of the deluxe models to complete the job. The final appearance of the supposed deluxe vehicles -- in their external and internal design and even in the details of the engine -- simulated to perfection the look of the original models.” King Juan Carlos’s daughter Cristina is moving to work in Switzerland with her family, her employer said, two months after a court named her in a corruption case against her husband. Cristina, 48, a manager in the social programmes foundation of the Catalan finance group CaixaBank, will now work in Geneva on its joint projects with UN institutions, the foundation said in a statement.

Authorities searched “practically every vehicle”, triggering the tailbacks and affecting thousands of people who commute to and from Gibraltar for work. A statement issued by the government of Gibraltar said: “It is disgraceful that EU nationals have been made to wait for nearly six hours to cross the border from Gibraltar to Spain. The Spanish Government has inflicted these unnecessary delays on the elderly, children and the infirm in up to 30 degrees of heat. This torture has resulted in an ambulance being deployed to treat people with medical conditions. The irony is that most of the victims are Spanish nationals in Spanish registered vehicles.” Foreign Secretary William Hague spoke to the Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo on Sunday to express “serious concerns”. Britain’s Ambassador in Madrid also raised concerns with the Spanish Deputy Foreign Minister and a protest was reg-

istered with the Spanish Ambassador in London. A spokesman from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said: “Our main concern is to restore people’s basic right to freedom of movement and enable a return to normal operations at the border. A speedy solution is essential to address the very difficult situation there and consequent humanitarian issues.” Spain disputes UK sovereignty over Gibraltar, an outcrop on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula measuring just 6.8 square kilometres (2.6 square miles) is home to about 30,000 people, which has been ruled by Britain since 1713. Spain wants it returned and refuses to recognise British sovereignty over the waters off the land known as ‘the Rock’. People in Gibraltar rejected Spanish sovereignty in two referendums one in 1967 and another in 2002, for the last seven years have governed most of their own affairs apart from defence and for-

eign relations. Gibraltar chief minister Fabian Picardo said he had “absolutely no doubt” that the border traffic delays were linked to a disagreement between Spain and Gibraltar over the placing of concrete blocks to create an artificial reef in Gibraltar’s territorial waters: “This is the way that Spain thinks it is appropriate to retaliate,” he told the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation. A contractor hired by the government of Gibraltar placed concrete blocks into the sea around the territory in Spain’s southern tip last week to create an artificial reef. This latest row comes after Spanish police were accused of firing plastic or rubber bullets at a British jetskier off Gibraltar last month. Dale Villa, 32, said he was left “shaken” after a Spanish police patrol boat fired shots at his jetski and chased him through Gibraltar’s territorial waters.

Teenager Dies In Bulls Fiesta

Police have confirmed that a 16-year-old boy was gored to death at a running-of-the-bulls festival celebrating the patron saint of a Spanish town

The animal caught the teenager in the back as he took part in the event marking the Apostle James feast at Isso, around 200 miles southeast of Madrid. He underwent two failed operations to repair massive injuries to his liver, but doctors were unable to save him and he died hours later. A 60-year-old man taking part in the festivities was also injured, when he was gored in a leg.

Fiestas including bulls are common in Spain, and critics and aficionados alike often agree that health and safety measures are almost non-existent at many small town bull runs, meaning that anyone can participate, even if they are drunk or unfit.

InTeReST among future pensioners in buying a holiday home overseas for their retirement has reached higher levels than before the financial crisis, according to hSBC.

The economic slump has not stopped millions of potential retirees in considering purchasing abroad to either live in during their later years, or as a base for holiday visits. Spain is still a favourite location, accounting for more than a quarter of 45 to 64-year-olds surveyed by HSBC who are thinking about buying property, followed by France and Italy. While many have struggled to put aside decent sums of money during the crisis, HSBC thinks that asset-rich baby boomers on better pension plans are in an excellent position to take advantage of property prices which are lower than pre-2007. On average, they would spend on average just under £117,000 on a property abroad, with the majority saying they would buy the property rather than take out a mortgage. HSBC’s James Yerkess said: ‘The economic downturn has had an impact on the income and savings of many but it has also helped lower the price of property in numerous overseas locations. Many of the baby-boom generation, who are now approaching retirement, are fortunate enough to remain relatively asset-rich despite recent economic frailties and this has opened up opportunities to take advantage of lower property prices abroad. That said, the weakness in many overseas property markets has created some caution among those

considering purchasing a property abroad with many saying they would now look to buy smaller properties or homes in less expensive locations.’ In spite of the tempting prospect of spending retirement in the sunshine, four out of five don’t see themselves moving abroad permanently even if they do buy a property. Two-thirds said they would spend between three and six months there, while a fifth would use it for no more than three months. Spain is still the destination of choice for Britons, in spite of recent anti-tax evasion law that affects British expats being brought in recently. Spanish residents - classed as those who spend more than half the year in the country - are now required to declare any assets they have worth more than 50,000 Euros held overseas, such as other properties, savings or pensions. This law prompted many expats to consider leaving the country in case they were found to have unpaid bills for taxes they were not previously aware they should be paying. But house prices are dropping in Spain - recording their fastest quarterly fall at the end of 2012 - making them a tempting target for Britons looking to pick up a bargain. Nonetheless, the financial crisis has prompted some to be more cautious with their investments, with 29% of those surveyed by HSBC saying they would buy a smaller property than they otherwise would have done before. 15% said they would buy in a cheaper location, and 9% said they would choose a property closer to home to reduce their travel costs.

www.tenerife-weekly.com The train driver of the train that crashed in Spain, killing 79 people, was talking on the phone when it derailed. Francisco Jose Garzon Amo was speaking to members of staff at the state-owned railway company, Renfe. A court statement revealed: “Minutes before the train came off the tracks he received a call on his work phone to get indications on the route he had to take to get to Ferrol. From the content of the conversation and background noise it seems that the driver consulted a map or paper document.”

The driver has been charged with multiple cases of reckless homicide, he was charged after an appearance before Judge Luis Alaez that lasted for over two hours. The 52-year-old is suspected of driving too fast on a dangerous section of the line near the city of Santiago de Compostela. Reports suggest the train was travelling at around 190km per hour (120mph), more than twice the 80km per hour (50mph) speed limit when it entered the bend. Garzon, who was pictured, staggering from the wreckage with blood pouring from a head wound, he refused to make a statement or answer questions about the crash. His court appearance was closed and the judge released him without bail. He was not sent to jail or required to post bail as none of the parties involved felt there was a risk of him attempting to flee or destroy evidence. He will be required to appear before the court once a week and surrender his passport, and is banned from driving trains for six months, a statement from the court said. The hearing came as the number of dead from the crash rose to 79 after one of the injured passengers died from their injuries in hospital. Authorities said forensic experts have identified all of those killed when the intercity train derailed and smashed into a concrete wall. They did not reveal the victims’ names but said their families had been informed. A large funeral mass took place on Monday afternoon with the prime minister and members of the Spanish royal family in attendance. Meanwhile, a resident of the town where the train crashed has claimed Garzon admitted going fast and said he “wanted to die” in the aftermath of the crash. In a televised interview broadcast on Spain’s Antena 3, Evaristo Iglesias said he and another person accompanied Garzon to a stretch of flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive. Mr Iglesias said: “He told us that he wanted to die.” He added that Garzon said he “had been going fast” and “he said he had

Train Driver Charged

needed to brake but couldn’t”. Officials have so far not said how fast the train was going when it derailed and it is not clear whether the brakes failed or were never used. The “black box” that records journey data is with the investigating judge. All eight carriages of the train, packed with 218 passengers, careered off the track on the express route between Madrid and Ferrol on the Galician coast. The train cut through electricity lines and leaking diesel fuel burst into flames in some carriages. At least 130 people were taken to hospital after the crash, with 70 still in hospital and 22 remaining in a critical condition. Five US citizens and one Briton were among the injured and one American was among the dead. Two separate investigations are being carried out into the catastrophe - one to look into possible failings by the driver and the other to examine the train’s in-built speed regulation systems and see if it was a technical malfunction that meant the driver was not warned of the reduced speed limit around the bend. The train crash is the worst Spain has experienced since a three-train accident in a tunnel in the northern Leon province in 1944. Due to heavy censorship at the time, the exact death toll for the Torre del Bierzo disaster has never been established. The official figure was given as 78 dead, but it is thought that as many as 250 could have been killed.

Spain Mourns Spain’s prime minister and prince were amongst those who crowded in and around Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral for a memorial Mass for the 79 people killed in the train derailment last week.

The cathedral, famous for welcoming thousands of pilgrims who every year walk the ancient footpath across northern Spain known as the Way of St. James, instead it welcomed thousands of mourners. The train derailed just outside the city on Wednesday, the eve of the region’s biggest celebration, the Festival of St. James, honouring Santiago’s patron saint. The festivities were cancelled for three days of national mourning. Black ribbons appeared everywhere and the city’s sports arena was converted into a morgue. “It’s not easy to comprehend or accept this reality,” the archbishop of Santiago, Julian Barrio, said in his sermon. “But I say to you, let our pain not be wasted.” Crown Prince Felipe, his wife, Princess Letizia, and sister Princess Elena attended the service along with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and other political leaders. Investigators are trying to comprehend how Spain’s rail safety systems might have failed. It is hoped that the train’s black boxes which include audio recordings of conversations between the driver and station dispatchers, as well as technical information on the train’s speed and any possible mechanical problems, will reveal more information. 70 victims remain in hospital, around 22 are in a critical condition.

Cougars Want Divorce For Spanish Waiters Nigella & Saatchi For Summer Flings

British men can now relax. A poll of female members of CougarLife.com, the dating site for women of a certain age looking for younger men, shows that British cougars can’t get enough of Spain. Barcelona has been quoted as their favourite hunting ground; with 19% of the votes the Spanish city topped the list.

These cougars’ visits won’t just be about taking in the sun, sea and sangria. Sightseeing also appears to their to-do list although the survey reveals that a majority of the women polled plan on seeing some action, as 70% hope to ‘hook-up’ with younger men while on their holiday. And they know who they want: 53% intend to go for

Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi who were photographed by a UK Sunday newspaper with 70-yearold Saatchi’s hands around his wife’s throat during an argument, have been granted a decree nisi at the High Court as they finalise their divorce.

hotel or activity staff, while just over half will makes an aim to make a play for tennis and golf instructors. Miss CougarLife.com’s Marlo Jordan, voted in as the site’s ultimate cougar, said, ‘For cougars like myself who enjoy flirting with young attractive men, Spain is one fabulous playground so I’m not surprised it took the number one spot for women looking for their dream cub.’

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has promised that there will be an independent review into the death of four-year-old Daniel Pelka who was subjected to a horrifying catalogue of assaults and callous abuse at the hands of his mother Magdelena Luczak and step-father Mariusz Krezolek. Clegg also called for teachers and social workers to resign.

Daniel’s mother and her partner were convicted of his murder on Wednesday, they are to be sentenced today (Friday). Mr Clegg said that Daniel’s “vile, evil murder” should be “on all of our consciences”. He spoke during an interview on LBC 97.3 radio: “Clearly people must have seen something was wrong with this boy.” Asked what the Government could do in response, Mr Clegg said an independent person would be named as soon as possible to conduct a case review into Daniel’s death. The review would play “a disproportionately important role in showing what more we need to do to make sure that people don’t fall between the cracks,” he said. Earlier, MP for Coventry North West Geoffrey Robinson said teachers and social service staff had “badly let down” Daniel and should consider quitting their positions. He added the case was “horrifyingly reminiscent” of the Baby Peter case in 2007, when Haringey child protection services failed to prevent the death of toddler Peter Connolly.

The business owner and dating coach added, ‘We like luxury, spas, beach-front cocktails and handsome Mediterranean men who appreciate mature women and are not shy of expressing themselves.’ With 17% of the vote, the Canary Islands were also popular with the survey’s 1,043 respondents. In third place was Cyprus, followed by Greece and Egypt.

Saatchi later described the incident as “a playful tiff”, Nigella has never publicly commented on the incident. The couple separated after a Saatchi, said to be worth over £100m, agreed to accept a police caution for assault after the picture were published. It is understood that no money will change hands between the couple as they finalise the end of their ten year marriage.. The couple confirmed that Fiona Shackleton - who represented Sir Paul McCartney in his divorce from Heather Mills, was representing Law-

son, 53, to bring the matter to a “swift and amicable” conclusion. A statement issued on behalf of the pair said: “A divorce will proceed on the undefended basis, the decree nisi is to be pronounced on 31 July, and neither party will

be making any financial claims against the other.” A decree nisi is a document issued by courts to say there is no reason why a couple cannot divorce. After six weeks the parties can apply for a decree absolute to officially end the marriage.

Independent Review Into “Vile, Evil Murder”

Mr Robinson has called for the immediate resignation of the city’s Director of Children’s Services, Colin Green, who is due to step down in September, and said those serving under him, should also consider their positions: “Where were these individuals when Daniel needed them most?” he asked. “Bureaucracy triumphed over common sense, care, and compassion. Those who failed Daniel must examine their own consciences, and conclude whether it is appropriate for them to remain in their posts.” Daniel died of a head injury in March 2012 after suffering months of cruelty and violence which turned him from “a beautiful little boy to a bag of bones”, according to police. He was imprisoned in a room with the door handles removed, fed salt when he asked for a drink, deprived of food and forced to defecate in his bed. Mr Robinson expressed anger at Daniel’s school, which failed to act upon warning signs that suggested he was being abused: “Daniel was let down,” he said. “He was let down badly, by an evil stepfather, an indifferent and selfish mother, but also by the Children’s Services in Coventry and by the school that he

attended. “How can the staff at his school have failed to have recognised patterns of behaviour that should have set alarm bells ringing, not only within the school but within the corridors of power within the council? How could anyone believe it to be normal for a child to climb on the top of furniture to get to food; to scavenge around bins to access waste; and to steal food from the

lunch-boxes? What human being, with the slightest understanding of children, would not have been concerned enough to take action to set alarm bells ringing?” Daniel’s biological father, who moved back to Poland when the boy was one year old, echoed Mr Robinson and questioned why “nobody reacted in time” to ask why Daniel was so hungry: “If people in school saw that he was taking a food from

bins, they should do something,” he said. “Go to Magda, or to Mariusz, and ask why the child is hungry. “They should send the police or social services to check the situation at home; check what they were doing with the child. As far as I know they did just nothing. Of course they failed Daniel. Nobody reacted in time. I am not saying they are guilty, but I know they made a mistake.”

Baby Cowell on the Way

BRACe yourselves. According to media reports the world can expect a mini Cowell in the very near future! Simon Cowell is expecting a baby with new york socialite Lauren Silverman.

Lauren, who is still technically married to real estate mogul Andrew Silverman, has said recently that she wants to marry the star. Lauren and real estate mogul Andrew have been long friends with Cowell and have enjoyed holidays with him in the past. But it wasn’t until Lauren and Andrew ended their relationship that her friendship with Cowell turned into romance, about a year ago. The pair were seen viewing houses together in Los Angeles earlier this year. A friend of Lauren’s is quoted as saying: ‘Lauren loves Simon; she says that she wants to marry him. And with the baby, she’s going the right way about it! But I think this could be really good for Simon.’ Another friend confirmed the baby news and said ‘yes, all true’. Lauren, 36, is said to be ‘around 10 weeks along’ in the pregnancy, according to Us Weekly magazine. Cowell and Lauren’s situation

is made more complicated by the fact that she is still technically married to Andrew. A source told Usmagazine.com: ‘Lauren and Andrew have been unhappy in their marriage for some time, and their divorce has been in the works for a while. As their marriage deteriorated, she and Simon became close.’ Cowell made no reference to impending fatherhood when he was interviewed by Chelsea Handler on her talk show on this week, concentrating on topics including One Direction and his recent health kick. It remains to be seen just how the news that he is to be a father will go down with Cowell, who has never made a secret of the fact that he doesn’t believe he is the right material to become a parent. Back in 2009, Cowell said: ‘God, no. I couldn’t have children. If I had them here drawing on the walls I’d go nuts. With kids, you’ve got a routine you can’t escape from. You’ve got to be up at a certain time. Got to listen. When all you want to do is sit in a corner thinking.’ However, in an interview in April this year, Cowell appeared to have somewhat changed his mind, saying: ‘I haven’t ruled it out. If I knew I could be - how do I put this deli-

cately - faithful, I would. I do like kids, I’m just not sure I’d be any good for the first six months. I don’t think I’d adopt because I’d rather have my own. I’d have to say I’d like a little girl.’ Cowell’s past relationship history is well publicised and includes romances with Sinitta, Terri Seymour and Alicia Douvall. He is believed to have been engaged twice, once to Page Three model Louise Payne in 1995, and more recently to makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy, she broke off their engagement last

year. Cowell later described the engagement as his ‘big mistake’, adding: ‘I’m attracted to crazy women. I encourage crazy behaviour and I make them crazy. I’m attracted to certain personalities who are difficult to control. So there are tantrums, tears and fights, which is all part of the drama. My life is really odd. Every girl wants to be number one and they’re very territorial. I like the fight, because otherwise I’d have a dull group of girlfriends.’ In February this year, Cowell con-

firmed he was single, saying: ‘I’d like to find a girlfriend.’ But while Cowell has spoken in recent months about his desire to settle down, he then called relationships ‘boring’ in an interview last month. He said: ‘When no matter how big your house is, you are going to end up on the same sofa, in the same bed or in the same room as a person. It’s a boring routine. Being on my own in the best thing in the world. It’s like breathing in oxygen - I can really switch off then.’

www.tenerife-weekly.com Road accident victim Paul Lamb and the family of the late Tony Nicklinson, a locked-in syndrome sufferer, have lost a right-todie challenge at the Court of Appeal. Judges rejected their appeal against the legal position that voluntary euthanasia is murder.

Former builder and father-of-two Mr Lamb, 57, from Leeds, who is asking for a doctor to help him die in a dignified way, had won the right to join the litigation to continue the battle started by Mr Nicklinson. Mr Nicklinson, 58, died at home in Melksham, Wiltshire, in August 2012, a week after he lost a High Court bid to end his life with a doctor’s help. The father-of-two, paralysed by a stroke while on a business trip to Athens in 2005, refused food and contracted pneumonia after he was “devastated” by the decision. During the appeal hearing the judges heard arguments that people who are too sick or disabled to end their “unbearable” lives without help are currently being condemned to “suffer in silence or make desperate attempts to kill themselves”. The ruling was given by the Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge, Master of the Rolls Lord Dyson and Lord Justice Elias. Mr Lamb said he was “absolutely gutted” by the decision: “I was hoping for a humane and dignified end. This judgment does not give me that. I will carry on the legal fight this is not just about me but about many, many other people who are

being denied the right to die a humane and dignified death just because the law is too scared to grapple with these issues.”

The Nicklinson family said on Twitter: “We are sorry to say that we have lost our Court of Appeal challenge.” They said they “will con-

tinue the legal campaign and appeal again”. The Court of Appeal granted the family permission to appeal to the

Supreme Court, the UK’s highest court. Lawyers for a third man welcomed a ruling in his case asking for clearer guidance from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for carers or health professionals assisting those wishing to end their own lives. Martin, 48, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, needs the assistance of a doctor, nurse or carer to help him die because his wife refuses to be actively involved in bringing about his death. His lawyers say that current DPP guidance makes clear that friends or family members are unlikely to be prosecuted, but does not cover health professionals. Speaking by means of special computer software, Martin said: “I am delighted by the judgment today. It takes me one step closer to being able to decide how and when I end my life. I am only unable to take my own life because of my physical disabilities. Almost every aspect of my daily life is outside of my control. I want, at least, to be able to control my death and this judgment goes some way to allow me to do this.” The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it has made an application to the Court of Appeal for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court over the issue. DPP Keir Starmer said: “While I respect the carefully considered judgment of the Court of Appeal, I think it would be sensible for the CPS, if possible, to have the benefit of the views of the Supreme Court before any amendments are made to the DPP’s guidelines in this important and sensitive area of the law.”

Mercury & Jackson Queen’s Nuclear War – Posthumous Duet? Speech Has Been Released

Queen guitarist Brian May has published hints on his website that he is working on a series of unheard duets between Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson. The musician said he had “a great time” working on the tracks in the studio in Manchester and revealed he had teamed up with renowned producer William Orbit - the man behind Madonna’s Ray of Light album.

Writing on his blog, May said: “As for unreleased material with Freddie singing ... strangely enough I was working on some tapes this evening - with William Orbit. There are a few items in progress. We will have something for folks to hear in a couple of months’ time, hopefully.” He added: “Great evening with William Orbit working with some Queen/Freddie/Michael Jackson tapes. Exciting, challenging, emotionally taxing. But cool.” Earlier this month, Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen pulled out of a

movie biopic about the late Queen front man after creative differences. Variety said the actor has parted company with film-makers over the tone of the film which is backed by Robert De Niro’s production company Tribeca, the company that co-financed the stage musical We Will Rock You. The film, with a script prepared by Frost/ Nixon writer Peter Morgan, is said to focus on the period leading up to the group’s performance at Live Aid in 1985. Mercury died in November 1991 and Jackson died in 2009.

A speech that could have been one of the last the Queen’s ever made if nuclear war broken out has been released. The script, written in 1983 amid fears Britain would be attacked by the Soviet Union, is part of a bundle of government documents released by the National Archives.

The speech says the country faces the “madness of war” and must prepare itself “to survive against great odds”. “When I spoke to you less than three months ago, we were all enjoying the warmth and fellowship of a family Christmas,” the Queen would have told the nation. “Our thoughts were concentrated on the strong links that bind each generation to the ones that came before and those that will follow. “The horrors of war could not have seemed more remote as my family and I shared our Christmas joy with the growing family of the Commonwealth. Now this madness of war is once more spreading through the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive against great odds.” The speech, which was never read or even seen by the Queen, was written as part of a Whitehall exercise known as Wintex-Cimex 83, designed to work through potential scenarios in the event of nuclear war.

It refers to the Queen’s “beloved son Andrew”, serving with his unit as a Royal Navy helicopter pilot at the time, and the address by her father George VI on the outbreak of the Second World War. It adds: “We all know the dangers facing us today are greater by far than at any time in our long history. The enemy is not the soldier with his rifle, nor the airman prowling the skies above our cities and towns, but the deadly power of abused technology. “But whatever terrors lie in wait for us all, the qualities that have helped to keep our freedom intact twice already during this sad century will once more be our strength. My husband and I share with families up and down the land the fear we feel for sons and daughters, husbands and brothers who have left our side to serve their country.

“It is this close bond of family life that must be our greatest defence against the unknown. If families remain united and resolute, giving shelter to those living alone and unprotected, our country’s will to survive cannot be broken.” The text was drawn up during one of the most dangerous years of the entire Cold War. US President Ronald Reagan had denounced the Soviet Union as an “evil empire”, while the shooting down of a South Korean airliner when it strayed into Soviet air space, killing all 269 people on board, further ratcheted up tensions. A Nato military exercise, codenamed Able Archer, nearly triggered an actual conflict, with the Soviet leadership apparently convinced it was cover for a genuine attack.

thrilling discovery 4,360ft underwater

A “ThRILLInG discovery” is how marine archaeologists examining a well-preserved shipwreck deep in the Gulf of Mexico have described what they found. Underwater cameras have spotted two other sunken vessels that more than likely went down with the main ship 170 miles southeast of Galveston in Texas during an early 19th century storm.

They were found 4,360ft (1300m) below the surface, making them the deepest Gulf or North American shipwrecks to have been investigated by researchers. Speaking at a news conference, Fritz Hanselmann, lead investigator with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Okeanos Explorer Project, said: “What you’re going to see and hear I hope will blow your mind - because it has ours. We went out with a lot of questions and we returned with even more. The big question we’re all asking is: What is the shipwreck? And the answer is we still don’t

know,” he added. “Nationalities, cultures, all collide in these shipwrecks. We hope to return in the future next year with more work.” During eight days of exploration, the scientists used remote-controlled machines to recover more than 60 artefacts from the initial shipwreck site, including musket parts, British and Mexican ceramic cups and dishes, liquor bottles, clothing and even a toothbrush. The team was not allowed to retrieve artefacts from the two new sites, but took thousands of photos. The NOAA’s Jim Delgado said the ships probably sank during the first two decades of the 1800s, which was a time of great upheaval in the Gulf region and in the New World: “Empires were falling, Spain was losing its grip, France was selling what it has, Mexico becomes independent, Texas independent, Latin America becomes independent and the US is beginning to make a foothold in the Gulf,” he said. “So these wrecks are all tied to that, we are sure.” Each ship was carrying 50 to 60 men and none of them survived. Among the wreckage were telescopes and other navigational tools that survivors would not have left behind if they could have helped it, the researchers said. The ship that the team set out to examine initially was armed with six cannon and may have had two masts. Undersea images show the outline of a copper-clad, 84ft (25m) long by 26ft (8m) wide wooden hull. The wreck was first spotted by a Shell Oil survey crew in 2011 who notified federal officials.

640 days to go!! ri-ri told to Shut Latest news from a galaxy far, far away up and pay!!

A FeW weeks back I used this picture claiming it was my worst fear for Star Wars episode 7- if the latest rumours are true it seems that my worst nightmare may come at least partially true!!

Latino Review, a magazine that has a reputation for announcing major movie scoops, has printed that an unknown source has told them Disney are after Zac Efron and more interestingly, man of the moment, Ryan Gosling for the new chapter in the saga, they even revealed some info on the parts that they want the actors for; “As for what role Efron would be playing, we don’t know. He could be a Solo kid,” Latino Review writes. “But what I was told for sure is the Gosling went in for Skywalker’s son. Yes, that’s right Luke’s kid”. The article also reveals that their source told them 2 months ago that the movie would be made at Pinewood Studios in England which was later announced to be absolutely true, it also says that Leonardo DiCaprio was met with but was out and that episode 7 would be set 30 years on from Return of the Jedi. Several rumours that director J.J Abrams had bailed

in order to direct Star Trek 3 were denied officially by Lucasfilm and Disney and “Badassdigest”, the site responsible, also issued a statement claiming it had “no serious substance” and had “took a life of its own”. Abrams Production Company recently tweeted an intriguing pic of 3 thick volumes of text bound with black covers with the words “hot off the presses. Can you guess what’s behind the cover? #mysteryscript pic” underneath!! Episode 7 was notable by its total absence at last month’s Comic Con -but with good reason, from August 9-11, Disney hosts its Biannual D23 Expo, which will include the official debut of Star Wars as part of the Disney family. We can expect a few announcements to be made there! To be fair the casting rumours are quite exciting-I can totally see Gosling as Skywalker’s heir, and Efron has been playing more mature roles and impressing audiences

(just for the love of god will someone lock Beiber up in a shed until it’s released) but the strangest casting rumour going around is that Florence Welch, lead singer of Florence and the Machine is being considered for a major role; “She has done some acting but it was her singing on stage that initially caught the eye,” said a source. You can bet I’ll be looking out for new announcements during D23..... May the Force be with you!

Update

Of course within hours, denials were being made, especially from the Gosling camp-a blunt “this is not true”-but frankly, with J.J Abrams at the helm- the king of misdirection, deflection and outright lying to protect a storyline, (remember how he said that the “Lost” cast were definitely not in Limbothey were, and in Star Trek 2. *SpoILeR* Benedict Cumberbatch is absolutely not playing Khanhe is).... this means very little.

LooKS like Rihanna will have to release 3 singles this week instead of the usual 2-to help pay a £30,000 fine given to her as a slap on the wrist by the judge in her on-going court case against her former accountants.

The firm, Berdon LLP, are being sued by the Barbadian beauty for mismanagement and claims the company owes her millions of dollars, but after failing to appear at numerous court hearings, costing thousands in legal fees, the accountants asked the judge to punish her, resulting in the fine. Rihanna claims that she was ill at the time of the hearing but she has missed 5 court appearances over 9 months -even missing one that was moved to London to fit in with the singers “Diamonds” tour dates. Although the firm requested the judge dismiss her case, claiming its “been pushed beyond the breaking point” and “cannot excuse her behaviour,” the judge has given her one more chance to be present at a hearing on August 28th. Rihanna didn’t seem too fazed by the fine and posted a “selfie” of her ample cleavage whilst partying on a yacht, well- she may be bad but she’s perfectly good at it!!!

alpha papa a partridge triumph!! AS Alan himself would say-”back of the net!!” the norwich based radio DJ’s first cinematic outing is receiving great reviews following its World premiere- held not in London, but in norwich of course!

Partridge who appeared on the red carpet, dressed to kill in a short sleeved powder blue safari suit that his idol Roger Moore would be proud of, said the decision was largely due to a twitter campaign-#Anglia Square not Leicester Square, claiming; “The people have spoken in the biggest petition since the clinic started handing out johnnies to 13-year-olds,” he also had something to say about the recent royal birth; “We should be proud that the baby was not only born on

the same day as Bonnie Langford and Danny Glover from the Lethal Weapons films, but also the 10th anniversary of the death of Saddam Hussein’s sons Uday and Qusay, so it’s a double celebration.” Asked what the baby should be named he said Alana but it’s not a girl, so-Brian!! The movie stays true to

the lo-fi look of the characters previous tv outings, ditching various “Alan goes to America” plots for a simple “siege in a Norfolk radio station” and is described by director, Declan Lowney as “a lot of fun, a lot of danger and some heavy kissing” Alpha Papa is released on August 7th.

BRITAIn’S biggest budget airline cancelled a late-night flight telling passengers they would have to wait 86 years and one day for a replacement. After waiting for a delayed departure from Geneva airport, 130 passengers booked aboard easyJet flight 8485 were told by email that they were grounded for eight decades.

The message from the airline read: “We are writing to inform you that your flight will depart as 9485 at 11:00 local time on 29/07/2099.” The airline apologised for the “significant inconvenience” that a wait until the eve of the 22nd century might cause, and expressed the hope that passengers “will give us another chance in the future”. The airline blamed bad weather at Geneva airport for the postponement. A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said: “Because the delay is weather-related, it is unlikely compensation will be due, but that does not affect your rights to accommodation, food and phone calls.” Passengers fortunate enough to live until the summer of 2099, easyJet would be responsible for providing them with three meals and two international phone calls every day, plus a hotel room every night. At current Swiss prices it would cost around £6m per passenger, 100,000 times the average fare paid. The world’s oldest operating airline, KLM, is 94 years old; easyJet is only in its 18th year. By 2099, easyJet will be 104. A spokesman for easyJet

said: “This was a systems error which only affected one flight. Even our new longterm fleet deal doesn’t take us that far into the future.” As passengers settled in for a long wait, some called easyJet customer services to

ask for their money back. Refunds were promised within 20 working days, rather than decades. Later, passengers were told that the original cancellation was, in fact, caused by a technical issue with the aircraft.

SharpLeS in SeSSiOn By John Sharples

Jobsworth

hoW many times have you heard someone say that the world has gone mad? Quite a few I bet. Well, this week it certainly has gone a bit barmy.

In a week when a Pakistani game show based on The Price is Right gave away a baby orphan girl live on the air as a prize and scientists have implanted false memories into mice I have started to become immune to the outrages of the 21st century. These mad happenings are to be found much closer to home too. My friend lives in a complex where there is a community with a president etc. He pays his community charge regularly and on time. There is a swimming pool attached to the complex and he very rarely goes down to the pool area. Recently, Gordon has been told that he should use the swimming pool to exercise his legs. All he has to do it sit on the side and move his legs. Holding the pool steps he also has to kick his legs. Off he went to the swimming pool thinking how lucky he was that the complex where he lives actually has a pool. He did his exercises and during the time he was there, only one other person came to use the pool which is quite a large one. His legs felt so much better afterwards so on the next day he made a trip down to

the pool for some more exercise. There was nobody else there. He had just started when the secretary of the community came down and said that two people had complained that he wasn’t using the pool properly. He was stunned. He asked for the names of the people that had complained but she wouldn´t tell him. How can sitting on the side of the pool and kicking his legs be incorrect use of a pool? How ridiculous that someone has nothing better to do than have a go at a man who never causes any trouble in the complex and always pays his dues. He will, of course, continue

to go down to the pool as often as he likes whether they like it or not. He quite rightly feels that he is being victimized. Don´t people have anything better to do with their time? here are some more crazy swimming pool rules from around the world. 1. No man under 4 ft 8 inches tall is allowed to surf on Klondike Beach (due to the size of the waves.) 2. Gold Coast: It is illegal for a woman to wear a bikini which uses more than 6 square inches of material. 3. California: Nobody is allowed to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool

Jackson & mercury Songs

IT appears that Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury recorded a few tracks together. The recently uncovered songs are in production phase with Brian May of Freddie’s old group, Queen, at the controls.

Brian May is working on the songs with William Orbit and he says that they will be ready for release in a couple of months’ time. He said that working in the studio and listening to their voices together was “Exciting, challenging, emotionally taxing. But cool.” I can’t wait to hear these songs. I love the voices of both singers and they will beat the stuff that gets called talent these days.

princess georgina mountbatten-Windsor

LAST week, when prince George was born meant disaster for a pottery company in Dorset. The company lost out after taking a chance that the royal baby was going to be a girl when they produced 5 , 0 0 0 commemorative plates celebrating the arrival of a “princess’.

The firm, who we shall keep anonymous, had supposedly had a tip-off from a palace insider that the Duchess of Cambridge was about to give birth to girl. Showing complete confidence in their informer, they designed special plates with the message: “To celebrate the birth of the

Royal Princess.” When the big day came and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced they had a little boy, the small family business was left with thousands of pounds of worthless plates on their hands. The plates were all bought by a website called www. wholesal e c l e a rance.co.uk which is now selling the plates in stacks of 50 for £149, or £2.98 each. The firm that bought them has suggested possible uses for the pieces of ‘inaccurate history’ including ‘waiting for baby number two and selling them for a profit’, ‘having a plate smashing contest’ and to ‘give them as joke Secret Santa presents”.

daft Spanish

Laws SpAIn is known worldwide for its excessive red tape. here are just a few examples of laws that have been passed or reported in the media. Some of these laws have been repealed when it was realised how stupid they were.

Valladolid approved a bye-law which allows beggars to be fined for begging in the street. I assume that they will have to beg much harder so that they can pay the fines. Benalmádena is to ban bathing on their beaches before 11am so that they can be cleaned. Lovely clean beaches with nobody on them! a Village that has only one street has stopped horses from being ridden or lead along its street. How the

farmers are supposed to get from the farmland on one side of the village to farmland on the other, when there are no alternative routes is beyond comprehension.. a village near Guadalajara has passed a bye-law which bans breaking wind in public. Sprouts and baked beans will be coming off the menus! Rasquera in Catalonia tried to pass a bye-law to allow the growing of marijuana

on a big scale to pay off the towns debts. The local police put a stop to it.! the Spanish Government wanted to class all unrecorded houses as illegal until they found out it would involve approximately 400.000 properties and about 1,600,000 people who live in them. The plan was to demolish them. Wouldn’t it be easier to make them legal and then charge rates on them?

AS James Bond would testify, when working for the security services in protecting Britain, danger is simply part of the job. But in a move likely to raise a quizzical eyebrow from the fictional super-spy, MI5 is now recruiting its own health and safety team.

The home of secret missions and risky espionage has decided it needs a health and safety manager as well as two advisers to keep its staff out of danger. But applicants face an uphill struggle to find out more about the £60,000 role to ensure MI5’s operations are as safe as possible. To protect national security, they will be told nothing about where they will be working, who with or what technology will be involved. Candidates for the manager’s position are warned that they will be told very little about the job they are applying for. The advert on the MI5 website says: “We can’t show you the buildings. We can’t talk about the people you’ll work with. We can’t tell you much about the job. We can’t give you the exact locations. We can’t mention the kind of technology involved. Is it still a risk worth taking?” The description reveals only that

the job is “London based with some UK travel”. Highlighting the challenges of working for the security service, it adds: “What we can tell you is that whatever your role at MI5, you’ll be contributing to protecting the UK from threats to national security including terrorism and espionage. Like other large organisations, at MI5 we use a variety of equipment to carry

out our work, except here our work is often covert and our equipment classified.” Applicants will have to pass a number of vetting procedures before being accepted for the role. If picked, it is assumed they will then be told the full details of their position. MI5 is known for its secrecy and only the director general is ever publicly named.

Question one: Who played the title role in the 1963 film Cleopatra? Question Two: Where on a fish is the dorsal fin? Question Three: How many cubic centimetres in cubic metre? Question Four: What is 9:30pm on the 24 hour clock? Question Five: Which group of Caribbean islands shares its name with a species of South American alligator? Question Six: What are spring and neap tides respectively? Question Seven: A kleptomaniac cannot resist doing what? Question eight: In World War 2, who was “The Forces Sweetheart”? Question nine: Who became the first Duke of Wellington shortly before ending Napoleon’s comeback at Waterloo? Question Ten: Who said “A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!”? Question eleven: Which flamboyant rock star memeber of Queen died of Aids in 1991?

Question Twelve: What is the function of an artery?

Leading Seaman William Hughes, an ex-pigeon fancier, caught the bird, checked it over and discovered that it was in fact female “It was a stroke of luck that Paul found Somerset. She will certainly have a few sea stories to tell her fellow pigeons.” Lieutenant Mark Gilbert, the ship’s flight commander, said: “The Royal Navy is used to saving life at sea and providing assistance to those in need. Caring for a lost pigeon seems like a natural extension to our versatile capability.” The bird’s ID ring let the crew track down owner Gil Hartshorn, 75, from Redcar, Cleveland, who said she had been released for a cross-Channel race from France. Mr Hartshorn, a retired welder, will be reunited

with the pigeon when Leading Seaman Hughes goes on leave in the Midlands. Paul regained her strength by eating breakfast cereal and was given a temporary home in a makeshift coop alongside a Merlin helicopter in the frigate’s hangar. Mr Hartshorn said: “I would like to say thank you to the crew of HMS Somerset for looking after my distressed pigeon, particularly the captain who agreed to have a lost soul on board until the ship returned alongside.” He said the bird will now be retired from racing, adding: “I’d be too worried she would land on the next Royal Navy warship and I’d never see her again. The Navy have done such a good job of looking after her.”

Palm Trees grow well on Tenerife

Dates

Canary date palm All around Tenerife you will see tall palm trees and they certainly give the island an exotic charm and tropical touch but did you know that one of them is actually a wild plant? Yes, Tenerife has its very own endemic species of palm.

The Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) also grows on the other islands and as its name suggests is related to the date palm (P. dactylifera). It does produce fruit too but although they are technically edible, most people would not want to bother because these ‘dates’ are small, don’t have much flesh on them and are mostly filled with a stone. The Canary Island date palm will grow into a very tall tree with a stout trunk covered in scars of where the old leaves once grew. These palms are usually pruned into a pineapple shape and grow much taller if this is done. Un-pruned specimens produce loads of leaves but tend to be much shorter. Pruning makes the

Canary palm fruit

The sago palm was once grown for its flour that was used as a pudding ingredient but this was stopped after it was found to be potentially carcinogenic. There are many more true palms that are grown in Tenerife, including the blue fan palm (Brahea armata) and the Chilean wine palm (Jubaea chilensis) and good place to see a selection of labeled specimens is the Botanic Gardens in Puerto de la Cruz. Some of them are very tall and all have impressive trunks that have been made to look a lot neater by pruning away the old foliage. It is customary to prune palms for a number of reasons besides making the trees look better. The dead leaves go very dry and are held in place for many years all around the trunks. They can harbour insect pests but are also a considerable fire risk. In recent years the island has suffered some terrible forest fires that have become out of hand and have spread rapidly. Pruning back the dry dead palms leaves is a wise precaution.

palm grow taller in an effort to produce new leaves which absorb the sunlight for photosynthesis. There are some wild groves of this tree still surviving but most Canary date palms are grown along roads and in parks and gardens. It is quite a hardy species and has been exported to many countries around the world where it is grown for its ornamental qualities. The date palm that produces the fruit we love to eat will also grow on Tenerife, and in fact does so in some places but there are people who feel that it should not be allowed to because of the danger of it hybridizing with the native palm. Nevertheless where it does grow it produces loads of juicy dates. Strangely these often fall off the palms and go to waste whilst people pay ridiculous prices in the shops. Give me a fresh date any time! Another palm that is frequently planted in Tenerife is the desert fan palm (Washingtonia filifera). It can reach as much as 24 m in height, and as its name suggests, it has fanshaped evergreen leaves. As they mature they hang downward and cover the trunk unless pruned away. The desert fan palm produces thousands of tiny dark brown fruit that fall off and cover the ground beneath the trees, especially after high winds and storms. They are very easy to grow if planted and sometimes you will see them growing into small palms where they have rooted in a crack in the paving or concrete. The desert fan palm is closely

Washingtonia palm flowers related to the thread palm (W. robusta), named after the threadlike fibers produced with its leaves and for the long inflorescences that hang down from the crowns of the trees. It has a thinner trunk to the desert fan palm but is otherwise very similar. The coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) can be seen in some places in Tenerife, especially along the coast in resort areas. It has a very tall and slender trunk. I have never heard of anyone growing coconuts here but it is possible! The sago palm (Cycas revoluta) is not really a palm at all. This curious, almost prehistoric-looking plant is often grown for its ornamental qualities and is actually a cycad, an ancient order of plants. It only reaches about 3 m in height but resembles a palm in having a trunk with evergreen fronds in a crown at the top. There are male and female plants and they look very different

when flowering. The male produces a flower-spike like a long cone that points upwards and the female produces weird pale-coloured fronds around its growing point. Large pinkish-orange fruit form among these pseudo-leaves and they remind me of eggs in a nest.

Palm that has not been pruned

Uses for the Canary Date Palm

The Canary date palm has medicinal properties and is used in herbal medicine.

The fruits boiled in milk are good for the digestion and an infusion of the young leaves is a remedy for coughs, catarrh and congestion. A tea brewed from the flowers has expectorant properties.

The sap of the Canary date palm is extracted and used to make Palm Honey. The island of La Gomera is a main source of this product. The leaves of the Canary palm can be used a sweeping brushes or used as the raw material for making mats, hats and other items.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

plague infected Squirrel found in Los angeles

A GRoUnD squirrel, infected with the plague, has been found in the Angeles national Forest, near Los Angeles, during routine surveillance by the US Forestry Service.

Jonathan E Fielding, LA’s director of public health, said: “Plague is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted to humans through the bites of infected fleas, which is why we closed affected campgrounds and recreational areas as a precaution while preventive measures are taken to control the flea population. It is important for the public to know that there have only been four cases of human plague in Los Angeles County residents since 1984, none of which were fatal.” A health advisory issued by the County of Los Angeles Public Health department said plague has been found in the ground squirrels population in the San Gabriel Mountains, adding that transmission of plague through flea bites causes bubonic plague in humans, with symptoms including enlargement of lymph glands (buboes) near the flea bite and rapid onset of fever and chills. Known as the Black Death, bubonic plague killed around 25 million people across Europe in the 14th century. All forms of the disease can be fatal, but most patients respond well to antibiotics. Previous routine surveillance had identified one plague-positive ground squir-

rel in 2010, one in 2007, two in 1996 and one in 1995. Officials say further testing of the rodents will be carried out and squirrel burrows in the area will be dusted for

fleas before the area is reopened to the public. Campers at the affected sites - Broken Blade, Twisted Arrow, and Pima Loops - have been informed.

Cooking with Coca-Cola

I have to admit that I love quirky different recipes as you may have noticed by now! It’s never an easy task to find those recipes with a twist and I do have to admit that this week’s recipes are from a brain storming session (after a couple of pints) with a couple of good well

known top Chef’s on the island.

Neil and Mark or known by many as “the twins”, have worked on the island for a long time and have a great reputation working in some the South’s top restaurants. Neil Head chef at “The Opera” on the Golf Del Sur and Mark Head chef at “44 Regent Street” Torviscas, inspired me to share some of these great little ideas!

Coca Cola ‘Gammon’

This great recipe keeps the joint extremely moist while it’s cooking and avoids that unwanted salty taste the longer you marinade it. Ingredients: 1 good sized gammon Joint approx. 1 ½ kilos in weight 200g brown sugar ½ bottle of Coca-Cola 200g crushed pineapple plus extra for decoration (optional)

Method:

Wash the joint of Gammon thoroughly. Score the joint every couple of centimetres to allow the marinade to soak into the meat. Rub fat side with brown sugar.

Pour Coca-Cola over Gammon and then pour the crushed pineapple over. Marinade it in the fridge for approx. 24 hours and then roast it in a hot oven covered with foil at 200°c for approx. 3 hours. Remove the foil 15 minutes before serving and glaze the joint with a bit of the juices, return to the oven for the remaining 15 minutes.

Pugh’s tips/hints:

Why not use Cherry Coke for that extra flavour? Glaze the Gammon with some honey just before serving? Take all the juices and thicken them up with gravy granules add a dash of garlic and some soy sauce for that sweet sticky rich gravy to go with your meat.

Coca Cola Lamb Chops

This is a lovely glaze that you can coat your lamb chops with just before cooking. You can’t beat a good tasty succulent Lamb Chop and this glaze ticks all the right boxes for me! Ingredients: 1 clove garlic, minced 75ml red wine vinegar 240ml Coca Cola ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 teaspoon Lea and Perins ½ teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped

Method:

Mix all the ingredients except the salt and pepper in a small bowl and set aside. Season chops with salt and pepper. Heat your Barbeque, a good sized heavy frying pan, or get your grill to the highest temperature. Cook the chops until they start to brown, then turn over to quickly brown the other side (about one minute). Remove from the heat and glaze your chops with the marinade we made earlier. Return to the heat. When they start spitting – again remove from the heat and glaze the other side; finally return them back to the heat to complete the cooking process. Serve immediately.

Stop Press…. Stop Press…. Next week we will be continuing our Coca Cola Cookery Class with a delicious sweet dessert made from coca cola and more……

aSton’S 237mpH one-off SuperCar

A DoG. not just any old dog, but a wrinkled, droopy-lipped mutt with a heavy-set frame and an adorable face. A rich heritage of adopting names from prestigious hillclimbs, blades, a lucky leaf, historic racing circuits and most famously, the initials of the man who turned the company around, was clearly thrown out of the window for Aston Martin’s 1980 ‘project K.901’. Chiefly because they named it ‘Bulldog’. And be in no doubt, this was one seriously quick Aston Martin. Last weekend at Kensington Park Gardens, Aston Martin celebrated its 100th anniversary. 150 Aston Martin models from past and present rumbled into central London, just a stone’s throw away from the company’s inception at Henniker Mews all those years ago, where cycling buddies Lionel Martin and Robert

Bamford first began knocking out hillclimb specials, starting the company that we know today. And among the cars on display, including the oldest surviving Aston Martin (the A3), a brace of V8 Vantages, DB7s, Zagatos, Bond cars, the CC100 and the lovely One-77, was a brutish, blocky bruiser from the 80s that stuck its pug-nosed face into the crowd without apology. Clearly, this was no ordinary Aston Martin. Built as a concept car in 1980, Project K.901 - or ‘Bulldog’ - was designed to

show off the capabilities of Aston Martin’s then new external engineering facility at Newport Pagnell. It was going to be the fastest car... in the world. It was 15ft 6in long, uncompromisingly wide, and just 43in tall, while a pair of electro-hydraulically operated gullwing doors actually cut into the floor of the car; a clear indication that grace, dignity and subtlety had been ushered quietly out of the Newport Pagnell facility’s back door. Possibly tied up and beaten too, for good measure.

Ferrari. And yet, there was nothing new about the Etype - all of its significant componentry had been seen before: the 3.8-litre XK engine was married to a beautiful and aerodynamic body designed by Malcolm Sayer (and inspired by the D-type and XK-SS), underpinned by all-independent suspension. Although the E-type coupé was the fastest and most useful of the breed, it’s the Roadster that attracts the most attention (and greater values) today. The open-top car was just as effective to drive as the coupe, thanks to a stiff under-structure. It was popular in the USA as well as Europe, and a high survival rate means that there are still plenty around.

But in 1964, the 3.8-litre was superseded by the newly-expanded 4235cc version of the XK engine. Although maximum power output remained unchanged at 265bhp, torque was increased, improving driveability. Performance remained pretty much unchanged, and many owners gave up trying to match the 150mph claim, as it simply wasn’t possible with an unmodified car. But the 4.2 actually felt more grown-up to drive, thanks to its lower red line and greater torque at lower revs prompting some to say the zest had gone. Another improvement that came in with the 4.2-litre engine was the Moss gearbox (often retro-fitted to older cars).

Jaguar e-type (1961 - 1975)

ALThoUGh automotive styling is subjective, the one vehicle that seems to top more opinion polls naming the most beautiful car in the world, the Jaguar e-type. Styled mainly by aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer, with significant input by Sir William Lyons, the coupe and roadsters caused a sensation when unveiled in 1961.

In short, the E-type redefined the way in which we all viewed sports cars, and how little it could actually cost to buy a 150mph car (it cost £2098, when an Aston Martin DB4 was over £5000). Except that those famous 150mph runs in preproduction models were never replicated by owners. Despite that the E-type was still fast enough to redefine what was expected from top-drawer manufacturers, such as Aston Martin and

nissan Leaf

The second generation of this fully electric vehicle has more than onehundred improvements over its predecessor. highlights include the extended range, so this five-door hatchback is capable of one-hundred and twenty-four miles rather than one-hundred and nine. This comes courtesy of the lower friction mechanical components, the more aerodynamic front grill, the more efficient energy/battery management technology, and the new heating system.

As with every electric car, however, its range varies according to the conditions. Accelerating uphill to a high speed requires far more power than cruising slowly on a flat road, of course. Also, the LEAF is easier to live with than the older version as it charges in roughly half the time. Executive Vice President, Andy Palmer, said: ‘The Nissan LEAF is our most technically advanced car yet and the launch of this new model - built along with its batteries in Sunderland - is a huge boost not only for the plant but for British manufacturing.’ He added: ‘We could not have reached this point without the support and commitment we have enjoyed from Governments across Europe - especially the British Government - who are backing the car industry on manufacturing and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles’. The Nissan LEAF comes in three forms: Visia, Acenta, and Tekna. What a contrast to the one-size-fits-all old version. The Visia has: steel wheels, black mirror caps,

and halogen headlights whereas the Acenta adds: alloy wheels, tinted rear windows, and body coloured mirrors. The Tekna has a Bose stereo and Nissan’s Around View Monitor too. The latter provides an all-round view of the surroundings via four cameras and a screen. This makes parking easy so the bodywork – which looks similar to the outgoing models should stay intact. Compared to its predecessor the LEAF also has heavier steering, more progressive brakes, and superior suspension for a more planted feel. This complements its larger boot that has fewer intrusions than its older sibling. So, what we have is a properly considered evolution of an already capable car. As with every electric vehicle, however, it remains to be seen how long the batteries last - but the new Nissan LEAF still cements its manufacturer’s reputation as one of the best electric vehicle makers on the planet. However with a price tag in Spain starting from 24,000 Euros and certainly no recharging points here yet, will many people buy it.

In a show that takes making a good impression

quite literally, each of our regular cast of celebrities will be transformed into a different legendary singer, and perform an iconic song and dance routine from that artist’s catalogue every week. But in a unique twist, the celebrities will have no control over who they will perform as on each show. Instead, they’ll have to face the Your Face Sounds Familiar ‘Randomiser’ at the end of each programme to decide who they’ll be becoming the following week. Whether it’s an older or a younger artist, or even a star of the opposite sex, the ultimate decision is down to the Randomiser, guaranteeing hilarious and dramatic results.

BBC 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 & 22:35 - 23:20 Julia Bradbury, Dr phil hammond and phil Tufnell host two shows tonight, raising awareness of three of Britain’s biggest preventable conditions – Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and liver disease - which affect an estimated 11 million people a year.

In May this year, the show organised the UK’s biggest ever combined health screening at Rugby League’s Magic Weekend in Manchester. Almost 400 locals and sports fans were screened to see if they were at risk from one of these three ‘silent’ killers. A team of three GPs, 50 NHS volunteer nurses, with

the aid of leading charities Diabetes UK, HEART UK – The Cholesterol Charity and the British Liver Trust, helped to give advice about how to reduce the risk of developing these chronic conditions. Some well-known TV personalities were also screened a few weeks ahead of the main event in Manchester. Long Live Britain follows the progress of former Eastender Ricky Grover, singer Jodie Prenger and actress Crissy Rock as they undergo a number of medical tests. Dr Phil Hammond helps Ricky to understand what his liver has to do to process fatty food, shows Jodie what happens if the body can’t absorb sugar from the blood stream, and teaches Crissy about good and bad cholesterol.

techniques and procedures. Ageing tummies and wrinkly eyes are under the spotlight in the first episode, as two people with specific worries have surgery in an attempt to turn back the clock. Exploring the non-surgical route, Anna Richardson roadtests one of the latest fat reducing treatments to try and get her 20-year-old’s thighs back. Louise Redknapp learns how to strip away the years naturally with insider tips from celebrity make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury. And the show investigates how to stay safe in the unregulated world of dermal fillers.

inbee park and Catriona matthew Headline 2013 ricoh Women’s British open field

By Sir old Golfer at St Andrews

W

oRLD number one Inbee park and World number 12 Catriona Matthew, who finished first and second respectively at the Wegmans LpGA Championship on Sunday, will headline the 2013 Ricoh Women’s British open at St Andrews, Scotland, started yesterday – Thursday and runs to 4th August.

This year’s Championship offers no end of intrigue as Park aims for a career grand slam having already won the 2013 Kraft Nabisco Championship, Wegmans LPGA Championship and the 2008 US Open. Meanwhile home favourite and 2009 Champion, Catriona Matthew, will arrive at the 2013 Ricoh Women’s British Open in top form, looking to claim her second Major title. Park has now spent nine weeks at the top of the Rolex Rankings and at 24 years old, has won seven LPGA

titles including three Majors and already has four wins under her belt this season. She is the first player since Annika Sorenstam in 2005 to win the first two Majors of the year and arrives at St Andrews with a chance to make history. Park explained, “After I won the Kraft I thought about how much I would like to achieve a career grand slam. I wasn’t thinking about achieving it this year as I know I have time on my hands. I have had the best possible start to my year and all I can do from here is try my best and see what happens.” Park added, “I loved playing in the Ricoh Women’s British Open at St Andrews in 2007. It was amazing to play the most famous course in the world in such an important tournament so I can’t wait to return. I remember I felt really comfortable playing the Old Course and finished just outside the top ten. I have had a lot more experience playing links golf since then so I am very excited to see what happens in August.” Matthew, who remarkably won

the 2009 Ricoh Women’s Open only 11 weeks after the birth of her second child, is hitting top form at just the right time. She commented, “Having come so close last weekend, I am now looking forward to St Andrews more than ever as I know my

game is in good shape. As a proud Scot there is no place I would rather win than at the Old Course playing in front of my home fans and I will be doing everything I can to ensure I am ready for the week.” Last year the Championship was hosted at Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the first time and, with the field including 27 nationalities and 20 Major Champions boasting 41 Major Championships between them, South Korea’s Jiyai Shin won her second Ricoh Women’s British Open title. Her first victory came at Sunningdale in 2008. The return to St Andrews has been much anticipated by players and spectators alike and defending Champion, Jiyai Shin has already confirmed she will be in Scotland, looking to claim her third Championship. In 2007 the Ricoh Women’s British Open made history as the first ladies professional tournament to be played on the Old Course and was won by crowd favourite and then World No.1, Lorena Ochoa. Shona Malcolm, the LGU’s CEO

said, “It was fantastic to see Catriona’s performance in America at the weekend and Scottish fans will be willing her on to go one better at St Andrews. Inbee Park achievements this year have been awe-inspiring and we are delighted to welcome these two great champions to our field.” This year fans will again be able to watch the BBC’s extensive live coverage of the Ricoh Women’s British Open in HD (high definition) on all fours days of the Championship, underlining the significance of the event in the BBC’s sports portfolio. The Ricoh Women’s British Open was founded by the LGU in 1976 and is staged in conjunction with IMG, the world’s largest sports marketing company. The event has been co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET since 1994 and gained Major status in 2001. Ricoh, the leading technology provider of Managed Document Services and Production Printing, has been the title sponsor of the Ricoh Women’s British Open since 2007.

Mo Versus Rubik’s Record Bolt – All In T Aid Of Charity

he Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas hosted the 2013’s Rubik’s Cube World Champion where some of the world’s fastest Rubik’s Cube solvers competed in more than 15 classic and non-traditional official cubing events.

One is the world’s fastest man, the other is one of Britain’s most successful athletes, and they could be going head-to-head in a race in aid of charity. UK athletics star Mo Farah challenged Jamaican Usain Bolt to run over a distance of between 600 metres and 800 metres.

Farah, 30, competes over 5,000m and 10,000m, while Bolt specialises in the 100m and 200m. They won their respective events at last year’s Olympics and struck up a special connection during the London Games. So the charity race, would be over an intermediate distance, raising money for their own foundations. Farah, recently broke the British 1,500m record, said: “He’s got his charity foundation, I’ve got the Mo Fa-

rah Foundation. It would be great to do a distance where people vote in - proper athletics fans - on what distance they think is most suitable.” He then told Bolt: “Are you up for that? Come on, you’ve got to do it.” 26-yearold Bolt replied he would be prepared to take on the challenge, saying: “That sounds fun. It’s going to be hard but

it’s charity so it’s all about fun and enjoyment. I’m up for anything, for anything’s possible.” Bolt, also the world record holder at 100m and 200m, said running 1,500m would be out of the question: “It’s way too far,” he said. “Six hundred (metres) for sure I can try because I’ve done 600m in training.”

Australian Feliks Zemdegs was crowned at the end of a three-day event that attracted 575 competitors from 37 countries. Zemdegs aged 17, scored a fastest average time of 8.18 seconds for solving the classic 3x3 cube, with a fastest single solve of 7.36 seconds, as well as winning the 4x4 and the One Handed 3x3 competitions. Mats Valk of the Netherlands, current holder of the world record for the fastest single solve in 5.55 seconds, came second in the 3x3 competition with an average

time of 8.65 seconds, while Sebastian Weyer of Germany finished third with an average time of 8.86 seconds. The US led the weekend’s overall medal count by earning a total of 14, including six gold, four silver and four bronze. The bi-annual championship is made up of 17 events, with the culmination being the crowning of the 3x3 champion. Other speed events included solving the cube blindfolded; with one hand; and using just the feet.

Ashes Heroes Brush City Striker Arrested Up Their Art Skills Over Hit & Run Birmingham City striker Marlon King has been arrested in connection with a hitand-run which left a man with a head injury. The footballer was held on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision following the crash in central London.

England’s cricket heroes spent their break from beating the Aussies brushing up on their art skills. The stars of the Ashes series have been sketching portraits of each other in aid of a new charitable appeal. Thankfully their skills with bat and ball are far more impressive than with paper and pencil.

Centurian Ian Bell’s efforts consist of a simple stick man to represent bowler Steven Finn, while Finn has drawn Kevin Pietersen circa 2005, complete with his “skunk” haircut. And Joe Root displays hitherto unknown artistic skills. The batsman, who took art at A-level, has turned his hand to drawing Bell and Monty Panesar. The portraits were drawn at the request of three cricket charities - The Lord’s Taverners, Chance to Shine and the PCA Benevolent Fund - and are being auctioned on eBay

It was a sweet feeling and another strong performance to frustrate Las Palmas over a comprehensive 2-0 in Gran Canaria and good to home win in the Copa see returning loanee Abel and Mahou first leg was rising youth star Jairo in the followed up with a starting line up. 0-0 score in the away leg on Wednesday to lift the trophy. That’s all four pre season games won with no goals conceded, not a bad platform to build on.

In both cup games CD Tenerife put out a side resembling their likely league line up and they caught the visitors on the hop in the first minute at home. A defensive mix up let in Chechu who controlled a loose ball expertly before cracking it past their keeper. Sergio Aragoneses started in the home goal after the two young back ups had a friendly each and he looked sharp with the defence in front of him looking defiant. The second half opened with another good move, Cristo centred the ball and Aridane was there to head the second goal and continue his rich form of last season. Half way through the half new boy Raul Camara took over at full back but limped off soon after with an ankle twist. Thankfully Camara and Inigo Ros injured at CD Marino are

Tenerife used the two legged cup to show off their new third choice shirt, it’s pink following on from last seasons colour choice and once again thee club will donate a percentage of replica sales to AECC the Spanish cancer charity. CD Tenerife continue their pre season build up with Primera opponents Osasuna at home tonight (Fri 2nd) at 8.30pm then away to Ibarra in El Fraile on Wednesday 7th August also at 8.30pm. Friday 9th is the Teide Trophy game at La Orotava, Celta Vigo had agreed to play in that game but last week they started to make unreasonable demands like a direct flight to Tenerife North and seemed to be looking for a way out of their commitment. Maybe their next demands would have included blue smarties in the changing room and a foot spa each but Tenerife are hopeful of securing Rayo Vallecano,Levante or possibly a team from Portugal as the replacement visitors for the game.

Splash Some Sea on those muscles

IT’S going to be a lively Saturday up the south west coast of Tenerife with two major sporting events taking place. La Caleta will get the adrenaline flowing with the second annual Travesia A nado swimming challenge and later in the afternoon the action moves up the coast for the Acuatlon playa San Juan which is a bit more challenging with swimming sandwiched between two testing runs.

The La Caleta swim is aimed at encouraging fitness and health and starts with a children’s race at 11am from the Bahia La Caleta. The main event parts the water at 12.30 with a 1,300 metre swim across the bay from Playa de la Enramada to El Varadero. If you feel inspired there are plenty of shallow swimming areas off the rocks near the fish restaurants of the old village and the main Enramada beach has room for all the family. Playa San Juan will attract

the more serious sports enthusiasts with a 4pm start at Avenida del Emigrante for the over 15 age group. Other categories will follow with men and women of different ages matched against similar competition all the way up to the over 60’s. The package is a 2,500

metre run, a 1,000 metre sea swim rounded off with another 2,500 metre run along the coast road. Both events are free to watch and great fun even if you are just in the shade cheering them on with a cold drink an ice cream in your hand.

CB Canarias Are Happy To Be SAD

Madrid-based newspaper Marca, effectively the mouthpiece for Real, claimed on its front page on Tuesday that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is demanding a fee of £126m, which would shatter the current world-record fee for a footballer, £80m Real spent on Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

Nothing comes easy for CB Canarias basketball team; they are used to fighting for their success in Spain’s elite ACB league. Their big hurdle this summer has been raising two million euros to become a SAD - Sociedad Anonima Deportes as demanded by the league rules. Thanks to their many fans and friends the club has Liverpool Football Club has given staff a list of banned phrases in an effort to get rid of discrimination in the stands at Anfield. The club have produced a handbook which highlights common slurs against race, religion, sexual orientation, gender and disability which could cause offence. Included are expressions such as “Don’t be a woman”, “Play like a girl”, “Man up” and “That’s gay”, as well as a number of more explicit or offensive words.

Liverpool’s players have their own guidance from a separate Premier League programme, and this latest move forms part of a wide-ranging programme to help other club employees identify discriminatory language that may be used by supporters on match days. “As part of the club’s continued commitment to tackle all forms of discrimination, as well as promoting its approach to equality and diversity, Liverpool FC has been actively engaged in a full club-wide education and awareness programme,” Liverpool’s social inclusion officer Rishi Jain said.

achieved their target to avoid any danger of enforced relegation.

The grand total of 2,020, 000 euros has come from 1,500 new shareholders including 120 businesses and 30 groups and fan clubs. The delay has meant the club has lost ground to rival sides in the transfer market but hey will now start to strengthen the squad that did so well to finish 11th last season, their first back at the top level.

A couple of familiar faces will be missing from the La Laguna club; Jakim Donaldson is leaving CB Canarias to add his talent to the Israel League. The Pittsburg born American pivot has become a firm crowd favourite in La Laguna after two spells with the club but next season will line up for Bnei Herzliya. Also Israel Martin, the assistant to coach Alejandro Martinez is leaving to take up a coaching role with Trepca Miltrovica in the Serbian league.

The president of the Spanish Football League (LFP), meanwhile, has dismissed suggestions that Real Madrid’s pursuit of Bale is immoral. The potential worldrecord bid has attracted criticism in some circles in light of the economic crisis still ravaging Spain, but LFP president Javier Tebas says he has no problem with Real shelling out: “It is immoral to pay for something when you

cannot afford it. I think it’s more immoral for a club to spend one million euros which they do not have. 100 million euros is a huge amount of money to spend on a player but if Madrid can afford that then it’s not a question of morality, but of whether it’s a risky move or not.” Tebas declared that he looks favourably upon the move for Bale, as the Welshman’s arrival would boost the profile of Spanish football: “I don’t know much about him, but if Bale is a good player, then I’d rather he was over here (in La Liga) than in the Premier League, It’s not a question of how much he costs, you have to look at how much money he will generate, and if the LFP has all the stars, it will allow us to maintain high television revenue. All the money the arrival of this type of player generates translates into more revenue.”

Liverpool FC In Slur Campaign

“This programme includes interactive workshops and a handbook which is designed to provide information on the latest equality legislation including information relating to what terminology is deemed as both acceptable and unacceptable. This programme of awareness enables our employees to recognise inappropriate language and take the necessary steps to ensure Anfield is free from all forms of discrimination. “Liverpool has been actively working with Kick it Out, Show Racism the Red Card and the Anthony Walker Foundation for many years and has been recognised externally for its contribution to helping tackle discrimination and promote Anfield as an inclusive and welcoming environment. The club has already attained Kick it Out’s equality standard preliminary level and has recently submitted its application for the equality standard intermediate level demonstrating its continued commitment.” Liverpool has had problems with accusations of racism in the past.

As the squad is due to return from their tour of Australia and Asia, the focus will soon again be on Luis Suarez, for whom the club have

rejected a £40m plus £1 bid from Arsenal. Striker Suarez was suspended for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra and

Oldham defender Tom Adeyemi was reduced to tears after Liverpool fans targeted him during an FA Cup match.

eAL Madrid have made a record breaking bid of over £85m to Tottenham for Gareth Bale. Real’s offer is over a week old, and Bale is becoming more and more frustrated with the situation.

According to reports, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is currently in Miami and that the club’s standpoint remains the same the Wales international is not for sale. Bale has kept his feelings to himself, making no public declaration about what he wants to happen next. Speaking on the Sky Sports Football Season Preview show, former Spurs player and Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp said he thinks it is inevitable Bale will now move: “How can he turn it down? I also believe Spurs are a selling club - go back to Michael Carrick, Luka Modric, Dimitar Berbatov - okay, they also sell at the right price. I think there’ll be a conversation between Daniel Levy and (owner) Joe Louis and I can only see one outcome, that he’ll be a Real Madrid player.” Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas backed his club’s chase for Bale: “We are talking about one of the top three or four best players in Europe, and it’s normal that his name is being discussed because he has all the qualities a footballer needs.” Continued on page 55
