Don’t know about you, but I have had an extraordinary week, not least of which was being invited to be a judge for the Live Arico Talent competition – full details of which can be found on page 7. Being an editor has its trials, but, as with the case in hand, you do get some brilliant perks too. I hope I get to see you down there, you never know what a competition like this could lead too! Now all I have to

Tenerife Weekly - 5th July 2013 - 11th July 2013 decide is whether I am going to be Simon Cowell or Sharon Osbourne, although I don’t really have the Cowell smile! Although we ex-pats are thought of as “Living the Dream” we never, ever, escape from the fact that we are British. My centre spread this week tickled me to death, all about how we Brits behave, and yes, I have to hold my hand up to being guilty of, probably, most of them. Sorry – see what I mean on pages 28-29 So, will Andy Murray manage to get through to the finals this year?

Continued from page 1

He is playing in his 5th Wimbledon semi-final, possibly as you are reading this, so can he hold his nerve, can he make it through to the finals. Will he smile?? At all? Knowing Mr Murray no, possibly not. We are all praying for him to make it through this time, he did it at the Olympics, so why not at Wimbledon? Come on Andy – we are all gunning for you! See you all next week.

Bergerac regularly drove a burgundy 1947 Triumph Roadster. Congratulations go to John Cavanagh who was the lucky winner. We look forward to seeing him with his family at the Sunday Carvery at Vivo, where they

After last year’s appalling fires in Tenerife, we could be forgiven for fearing that the worst that could happen this year would be another such tragedy. In July a fire, stretching from Ifonche in Arona almost to Santiago del Teide and up to Vilaflor, led to several evacuations, including Vilafor itself, and burned a deep scar at mid-altitude along the west of the island. It took days of efforts by water planes – belatedly arriving from the mainland – before they were finally extinguished.

Within a month, a fire in the El Tanque area spread quickly out of control, leading to several more evacuations from Santiago del Teide to Teno, and including Masca, identified by the Cabildo as one of Tenerife’s “essential places”. This fire had not even been extinguished when another major blaze broke out in Los Realejos, spreading quickly to parts of La Orotava. These weren’t the only fires on Tenerife last year, but they were the most wor-

rying. The issue isn’t just confined to Tenerife either, because last year La Gomera suffered terribly as well. Valle Gran Rey was evacuated, with residents literally ferried – by Fred Olsen – from the mouth of the gorge. Worse, 20% of the Garajonay national park, a unique world heritage site of staggeringly ancient forest, was destroyed. The scars of all these fires are still clearly visible even a year later. What made the difference in all these cases was the arrival of hydroplanes. In all, seven were employed, with what seemed like a drip feed of them from the mainland, and eventually two being provided by Morocco. No-one wants to use these planes unless they have to: they deposit sea water which contains minerals that have a devastating effect on areas that need to regrow. That, however, is better than being burnt to cinders with nothing left to regrow at all. They are a last ditch effort, and last year the last ditch was reached on several occasions. It was with some despair, therefore, that people learnt in May that Madrid had dismissed the Canaries’ argument that when we needed a plane we needed it immediately, and had refused to allow a permanent hydroplane to be based in the archipelago. In June, however, Madrid

conceded that the argument had not been overplayed, and allowed for one to be stationed here between July and September, the months of highest risk. For once, something happened on time, and the plane arrived in La Gomera on 1 July as promised. Not a moment too soon, some say, because with the summer only just started, there have already been several fires, one on the edge of the fabulous forested Anaga region, another of Tenerife’s “essential places”. Surely the worst was now over, or at least could be dealt with – wasn’t it? Well, no, because on Monday, Tenerife newspaper Diario de Avisos announced that it had been told by the fourth vice president of the Tenerife Cabildo, José Antonio Valbuena, that the Canarian Government was aiming to stop funding the Consorcio de Bomberos. The consorcio is a public organization of professional and volunteer fire brigades, funded jointly by the Cabildo, local Ayuntamientos, and the Canarian Government. The regional executive apparently announced last December that it planned to call a halt to funding as part of the ongoing cuts, basing its stance on the argument that although an essential service, it was a matter for the

3

islands themselves to take control of individually. This would mean the Cabildo having to find funds from other insular sources to maintain Tenerife’s fire fighting service. Given that it’s regional Government funding that is at issue, the same would apply to the Consorcios of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Sr Valbuena says that there have been several

meetings since December to try to find a resolution with the Government, but at the end of April the Government confirmed its position. Where this leaves Tenerife, or the other islands, in the case of a major fire like last year’s, heaven only knows, since the Cabildo is having difficulty in funding our single abattoir, let alone has the means to make up the short-

fall, estimated to be at least a couple of million Euros. It’s all very well having the new plane, but who is to pay for its deployment if funds for even existing fire-fighting services are reduced? We will have to trust to luck that the “social agents” who are to be approached to replace the withdrawn money have the funds - and the will to supply them.

Breakfast In The Vineyards

CasA del Vino, La Baranda, and Pasteleria Diaz have organized an event they are calling “Breakfast among the vineyards”, an initiative that combines a guided tour of the facilities in El Sauzal and talks about wine culture with a gastronomic tasting of cuisine with wines from Tenerife, on July 14th.

The event will start at 10.30am with a guided tour of the Museum and the facilities of the Casa del Vino. The group will then move onto the vineyard located on their farm, where an expert winemaker will explain cultivation, grape varieties, the different aspects that influence the quality of the wines, commercial classification and the purpose of the designations

of origin, among other issues. During the tour there will be different stops to taste foods from different elaborations that often have to do with the world of wine, such as Florentine lollipops with red wine, Burger with cheese and red wine-onion

jam, amongst other dishes, with different Tenerife wines. Those interested in participating in this activity, which is priced at 15 euros, can book your place by phoning 922 572 535 or by sending an email to info@teneriferural. org

Tenerife Weekly - 5th July 2013 - 11th July 2013

NEwS ON THE ROCK

The Tenerife Government (Cabildo de Tenerife) enforced a ban on certain activities in the mountains on the island, following the Spanish Met Office’s forecast (AEMET) of high temperatures expected last weekend and a report issued by the Forestry & Fire Management section of the Island Department for the Environment. The ban strictly prohibited the lighting of any fires in the recreation and barbecue areas in the mountains, any burning of agricultural or forest waste and lighting bonfires. Also prohibited was work with machinery or tools and the use of anything that could cause sparks in agricultural and forestry areas, such as brush cutters and welding equipment. Fireworks displays in the area of risk and in places close to dry vegetation where wildfire could spread were also banned. These measures will remain in force as long as the dry weather conditions persist which can greatly increase the risk of wildfires. As part of the plan for the prevention of forest fires, the Cabildo of Tenerife has issued a plea to the general public to avoid going into the mountains during the heat wave whenever possible. The island’s Forestry and Fire Management service has already put its emergency services on standby so they are prepared if a high risk situation should arise. For updates see: http://www.diariodetenerife.info There is now clarification on the controversial Adeje bylaws on washing lines and BBQs in the municipality. The council says that there were municipal measures about washing lines previously, but they were ambiguous. Specifically, what is to be prohibited is the hanging of clothes or clotheslines over balconies facing a street. So, within balconies themselves it is permitted provided that the clothes are not visible from the street. As far as BBQs are concerned, the council say they have more complaints than might be imagined from people who consider the smell and noise emanating from BBQs on balconies and terraces in communities to be a nuisance. This bylaw is very clear: residents with a balcony or terrace within a community will not be allowed to have BBQs on them. The new regulations will now go through the usual 30 day public exhibition process for comments or objections before becoming municipal law. Lifeguards have again saved someone’s life at Playa de Las Vistas. This time, a 50-year-old woman was resuscitated after suffering a heart attack. She is now in critical condition after being stabilized at the scene and transferred to Hospitén Sur. She was lucky this happened at the one Arona beach with a lifeguard service - even though the lifeguards are still waiting payment after winning a Court judgment requiring the Ayuntamiento to give them the wages they are entitled to. Very welcome news this month that June’s unemployment figures fell dramatically in Spain nationally, though the overall figure is still above that of a year ago. In the Canaries, there was not the same sort of fall, but there were still 3,308 fewer people out of work, a drop of 1.12%: there are now 293,054 unemployed in these islands. As with the national figures, Canarian unemployment is still higher than this time last year, but any drop is gratefully received right now. The service company that has operated the sunbeds and umbrellas on Los Cristianos beach for a decade removed them on Tuesday. Arona Ayuntamiento has been silent on the matter, so it remains speculative, but it appears that the Canarian Government has decided to enforce the multiple technical reports which showed the service on Arona beaches was illegal, and that the contractor, Nanelbrusco SL, has pre-empted the inevitable instruction to vacate. It is expected that Troya and Las Vistas beaches will soon follow suit.

112 emergenCY app LaunCHed ThE Canary Ministry of Economy, finance and security, and the frEss foundation, have signed a collaboration agreement, with the Canarian Government will improve the access to the European emergency number 1-1-2 by implementing frEss.

FRESS is the Social Network for Emergency Response designed exclusively by the Foundation FRESS (Free Emergency Services) for emergency management. FRESS provides a software application that creates a communications platform allowing individuals to seek emergency assistance through an easy to use smart phone app. through voice, real-time texting, sharing photos and data, and optimizing the location of the caller. The system also translates text messages into Spanish automatically, which is an advantage for the millions of tourists who visit the Canary Islands. With this initiative 1-1-2 CANARIAS wants to move forward and join the project of Next Generation Emergency Services, providing attention to all the individuals in our community, connecting users with different abilities, languages and nationalities with the European emergency number 1-1-2. Using FRESS112 for the location and positioning by the terminal location via GPS is more accurate than the one submitted by phone antennas. The application works with 3G network FRESS, i.e. you must have enabled data line in the terminal for the use of advanced options such as sending pictures. Your download is free and the user of this service must have installed

on their mobile device this app with all desired personal and health information in order to improve response times by emergency services. FRESS112 has been developed by the International Foundation FRESS and has already been tested in the emergency services in Virginia, USA (911), Mexico (Control Center), currently in operation, and Krakow in Poland, and has now been integrated in the Canary 1-1-2 technological system. The purpose of the Foundation is to connect FRESS users to the nearest emergency center via voice, text, images or video communication, from anywhere in the world they are. FRESS Foundation is dedicated to develop technology and activities of general interest, specifically intended to

encourage, assist, promote, encourage, and disseminate information and technological tools to improve the safety and emergency conditions of people at risk of exclusion for physical reasons. It also tries to promote and disseminate the development of information, scientific research and technological development in our society.

1492- From Las Americas To The Americas

By Marc Craig

Columbus completed 3 more expeditions, claiming the Antilles, Venezuela and Central America for the Spanish Empire. Refusing to ever admit that he had discovered a new continent (surely a great achievement?) rather than the East Indies he set out to reach, he named the inhabitants he encountered “Indios”, the Spanish name for Indian-a likely reason native Americans to this day are known as “red “ or American Indians.

D

oes the date 1492 mean anything to you? Well, it’s the year that the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus discovered America. But did you know that the epic journey made famous by books, movies and history itself, technically began right here in the Canary Islands?

Widely credited as discovering The Americas, Christopher Columbus or Christóbal Colón to the Spanish (Puerto Colón is of course named in his honour) was actually the second European to make it there- he was beaten to it by a Norse expedition way back in the 11th century- his 4 voyages are historically significant, as they led to a general awareness of the American continent in Europe and began the Spanish “colonisation”, a word derived from his name, of the New World. Although he is often mistakenly assumed to be Spanish born, Columbus was actually born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, having first gone to sea at the tender age of 10, as a young man he quickly gained a reputation as a great Navigator and explorer and in 1492, with the support of the Spanish monarchy, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Columbus embarked from Palos de la Frontera on 3rd August with 3 ships, the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Santa Clara. His mission was to set sail for the East Indies after a prolonged stopover at the Canary Islands (more on

Columbus and The Canaries

that later) with the hope of establishing a nautical trade route with the East. For centuries under the Mongol Empire, Europe had safe passage by land to China and India. Known as “The Silk Road”, it was used for trade in valuables like silk and spices. However, when the Ottoman Empire seized Constantinople in 1453, the race was on to establish a safer sea trading route. In a world where many, especially Catholics still believed the world was flat, Columbus’s theory was groundbreaking, by travelling west from the Canary Islands; his ships would eventually traverse the seas on the globe shaped world and end up in the East Indies. Having finally convinced the Spanish (and Catholic) monarchy to take a huge risk in financing his trip, his journey began. However although his theory was sound, his calculations were way off. He mistakenly believed that the distance between the Canary Islands and Japan was about 3,000km in reality it’s more like 20,000km!! After 5 weeks from leaving La Gomera, on 12th October, his ships arrived at the Bahamas on an island he named San Salvador.

Email Marc: marc@tenerife-weekly.com

So that’s a brief outline of Columbus’s famous adventures, but what does Columbus have to do with these islands? Having left Spain on 3rd August, Columbus first headed to La Gomera where they restocked provisions and made repairs, including the rudder of the Pinta which had snapped. It was during the month or so (they set sail on September 6th) spent on the Island of La Gomera that Columbus met and fell in love with the stunningly beautiful ruler of the island and widow of Hernan Peranza , the Countess Beatriz de Bobadilla - and some believed his infatuation with this beautiful (although some say cruel) woman who was a rival to the throne of Queen Isabella, delayed his departure by several weeks. Accurate documentation of these few weeks the explorer spent on the island is hard to find, in fact there is a certain amount of confusion about the identity of the object of his desire-several articles claimed that Beatriz was in fact a close friend of Queen Isabella and although of noble blood herself, became personal Lady in Waiting to the Queen When she married Ferdinand of Aragon. They remained lifelong friends and Beatriz was at the Queen’s deathbed. It was Beatriz’s incredibly beautiful younger sister Eleanora who, whilst visiting the Royal court, enchanted the King so, that Queen Isabella had her married off and all but banished to the remote island of La Gomera where she was widowed during riots, leaving her Governess of Gomera before her 30th birthday . Columbus was said to be completely smitten by Eleanora and returned to visit her again in 1493,however she remarried in 1497- this didn’t stop her from affecting the life of Columbus once more when in 1500, her uncle Francisco de Bobadilla had Columbus arrested during his time as Governor of Hispaniola. She was furious and ordered “her Admiral” to be released immediately. So, Beatriz or Eleanora, Christopher Columbus obviously was so in love with La Gomera’s first Lady, he felt the New World could wait a few weeks more!

Wanted, a Cleaner, Healthier adeje

englishtimeadeje.com

ThE mayor of adeje has presented a new awareness raising campaign to the media.

The objective of the campaign is to increase civic awareness about recycling, general cleanliness on the streets, and the responsible care of pets. The mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga presented the new campaign under the umbrella title, Adeje, Clean and Healthy. He was joined at the top table by Environment councillor Esther Rivero Vargas and the head of the municipal cleaning and

campaign will be cross-departmental, with participation and links in all the relevant areas to reach all sectors of Adeje society from a range of different focus points. “This is an open campaign, we have a schedule and a series of events already in the planning via which people can bring new ideas to the table to improve the campaign and better achieve its aims”, he said. “To achieve those ends we are meeting with animal protection groups, those who operate animal refuges, vets, and different residential groups to collect as much information as we can regarding pets”. Following a brief outline of the campaign image, using old Wild West ‘wanted’ posters where the public enemy is filth and rubbish thrown on the street and the reward is a clean living space with care and attention sought for pets, Rodriguez Fraga said that the campaign will begin in earnest in September and will have, initially, a one-year life span during which time the council will be organising a series of related education and themed events. During his intervention, the mayor also reported upon the unwelcome increase in the numbers of abandoned pets as a result of the economic crisis. “This kind of poor behaviour doesn’t just affect the actual pets that have been abandoned, but also society in general, and is not just cats and dogs. We

recycling company Ascon Torrabonaf, Francisco Valiño. The mayor told the press that “Adeje can depend on a population that is very responsible and already committed to the protection of the environment, and the council is now looking to promote, through a very open campaign, a series of objectives which will be interconnected and once realised will deliver a borough that is clean and healthy; an Adeje that operates in line with the conditions established by the national network of Healthy Cities.” The mayor explained that the

have found abandoned horses in the Adeje mountains”, he told the press. He added that it was important for people to remember that pets are not toys. “They are living creatures and must be treated as such”. Councillor Esther Rivero told the press that among the events programmed were the presentation of a public schools’ campaign alongside a series of extracurricular activities on more and better recycling and increasing awareness and levels of responsible pet ownership. There will also be series of talks in different neighbourhoods. The Councillor said that these too would be open and at the latest would be held during October along with the presentation of relevant material. Another part of the Adeje, Clean and Healthy, will be a series of talks organised by the Department of Health which will look at the health benefits of having a pet and the duties too. These initiatives will be promoted on a door-to-door basis, with groups from the environmental section of the council going from house to house with leaflets and explaining the campaign strands to residents of the borough. The campaign will also make use of a host of information aids such as travelling stands, environmental courses, recycling courses during Adeje Summer School, educational/recreational activities, photography competitions, pet tales and storytelling,

and theatre presentations to make sure the messages reach all corners of Adeje, as well as using the more traditional media such as radio, television, newspapers, digital media, posters and leaflets. On the recycling side, the head of the Ascan Torrabonaf cleaning and recycling unit, responsible for the service in Adeje, said the new campaign in recycling is the result of the excellent level of participation generated by the first campaign which was inaugurated in Adeje in 2008. Francisco Valiños said that as a result of the current campaign Adeje today can boast a 35.5 kilo/ resident recycling rate, the highest in the province and second highest regionally in the collection of glass. The regional average is 11.5 kilo/ resident. Valiño said there was already another increase in recycling recorded for the year 2013, and in the first three months of the year the town had deposited 826 tonnes of glass in the bins, with a parallel increase in plastics, tins and boxes.. This recycling also led to a direct reduction in the amount Adeje pays for rubbish treatment by 10 per cent. “So as well as an environmental benefit, recycling saves money for Adeje’s residents”, he said. He ended by saying that the next move the company was planning was to make was to introduce recycling units in the borough’s hotels.

Opening Ceremony Virgen del Carmen Of IKEA, Las Chafiras

The very welcome opening of the new IKEA in Las Chafiras was attended by His Excellency the Mayor of San Miguel de Abona Valentín González and the director General of IKEA Canary Islands, Balearic Islands and Caribbean Tony Tavira.

Janet Anscombe.com It’s midsummer, and Tenerife is pretty much on holiday now for July and August, and over these next two months throughout the island there is a series of fiestas honouring the Virgen del Carmen – the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel who is the patron saint of fishermen.

The biggest celebration is in Puerto de la Cruz – 1-21 July (main day on 16th) where the town is dressed up to the nines and with tens of thousands there to watch. Particularly popular in the south is that of Los Cristianos – 26 August to 2 September - but the same will take place, albeit on a

The mayor gave a speech welcoming the new branch to the south of the Island saying: “We are really pleased for San Miguel and the Las Chafiras area in general that you decided to move into the area, I feel it is going to be a very important boost to our economy and hopefully encourage other large companies to consider working in the area. I am very happy to have been asked to officially open the store.” As in the Swedish tradition for good luck for a family and its visitors, a birch trunk was cut by the mayor and director general of IKEA, it was suitably adorned with blue and yellow ribbons in recognition of the colours of the Swedish flag, which are also the colours of the Tenerife flag. The Mayor and Tavira were

presented with a hand saw, Tavira complained that “I had asked for a chain saw, but they wouldn’t let me have one!” They were helped by Marta Gallego, IKEA project leader of IKEA in the South of Tenerife and Juan Jose Cabello, head of IKEA Tenerife shop. After the cutting ceremony invited visitors were served with a traditional Swedish breakfast. Juan Ramon, Las Chafiras store manager spoke with Tenerife Weekly: “the first few days have gone really well with a lot of people visiting the store. This now saves people a 120km round trip to La Laguna as all the items on sale from Ikea can be ordered either in store, or online for collection the following day.

smaller scale, in most coastal towns and villages. The celebration involves a religious service followed by a ritual march with the Virgin’s statue being carried to the sea accompanied by musical bands and locals often in traditional dress. It is then loaded into a boat which sails around a harbour or stretch of coastline to bless local fishermen and their catches for the coming year. The event ends with

the inevitable fireworks, and is followed by music, dancing and food – which last throughout the next three or so days, usually over a long weekend. Inland, the Virgen del Carmen is honoured for protecting and preserving the fertilility of Tenerife’s volcanic soil and its agricultural productivity. Wherever you watch or participate in this year’s Virgen del Carmen fiestas, have a great time!

are You playing The Host With The most This Summer? Tell Your Visitors To get a Health Card and Travel Insurance

as BrITIsh expatriates in spain prepare for their annual influx of summer visitors, the British Embassy is urging people who are expecting friends and family to remind them to bring an often-forgotten essential – a European health Insurance Card.

“If you’re having family or friends to stay this summer, they’ll be asking you what they need to bring. Item number one on their checklist should be the European Health Insurance Card - also known as an EHIC” says a British Embassy spokesman. “This simple piece of plastic entitles the holder to all medicallynecessary treatment during a temporary stay in Spain. It’s easy to get – check out www.ehic.org.uk - and it costs nothing. “Although most people’s trips are trouble-free, things can go wrong. An EHIC will provide peace of mind in case someone needs to see the doctor. It’ll help to ensure they don’t

take home a big hospital bill should they need medical care.” Comprehensive travel insurance is the second vital item on a visitor’s packing list. It covers all the extras that an EHIC doesn’t provide, such as repatriation in the case of medical emergency. If a visiting friend or family member is taken into hospital, an EHIC is enough to cover someone until they are well enough to travel home. If someone who is taking out travel insurance has a pre-existing medical condition, then do remind them to declare it. If they don’t, the insurer may well invalidate their policy. “You won’t fool them but they may make a fool of you”, says an Embassy spokesman. Every year consular staff in Spain are asked to assist hundreds of Britons who have failed to take out travel insurance or who have invalidated their policies, and who have ended up facing huge bills when attending a private clinic or hospital. However, visitors to Spain should be aware that they do not have to provide travel insurance as payment

for medically necessary treatment in a public or state healthcare facility. They should insist that their EHIC is accepted. Anyone asked to sign a form or disclaimer in a state hospital should check that they are not forfeiting the right to be treated under an EHIC.

If someone’s EHIC is refused or for other concerns about using an EHIC whilst in Spain, call the Department of Health team at the British Consulate on 902 109 356. A visitor who needs to see a doctor and doesn’t have an EHIC with them can also get a Provisional

Replacement Certificate from the Overseas Healthcare Team in Newcastle, on +44 191 218 1999. To apply for an EHIC go to www. ehic.org.uk For more information on EHIC entitlements, visit www.healthcareinspain.eu

Live Katies Arico News Party – One Of

Last Sunday the 30th June we had an open day in conjunction with Horse Riding Adventures in Aldea Blanca, which is of course where our rescue horse Katie lives.

The event was so well supported, by around 90 guests, and we had just the best time. We need to thank:- Jim and Sara Chew, proprietors of Horse Riding Adventures and recent winners of Trip Advisor’s 2013 Certificate of Excellence. They were fantastic hosts, and along with Sally from Tenerife Angels let us use their horses for pony rides and horse and cart rides for the afternoon. This generated 165 Euros. The lovely Midge helped an overwhelmed Suzy q with keeping everyone fed, and Bob from Tenerife Angels manned the bar, AND provided a load of gorgeous mojito, mmmmnnnn. We raised 570 Euros in total so Katie’s needs

If you would like to be a sponsor, call Sue on 629 399 102 for more information. And please, do go to visit her, she doesn’t walk well because of her laminitis so needs mental stimulation. Things to do in Tenerife in July 2013

redqueenmusings.wordpress.com

What to Expect

July marks the beginning of the summer season in Tenerife when the days are long, sunny and very warm and rain is practically unheard of.

If you’re looking for a somewhere to spend the day, head to the beach in Los Cristianos this one (although there are numerous beautiful beaches to choose from) is sheltered by a small harbour, making the sea ideal for children to swim in. If in the north of the island where the beaches are not generally to Northern European tastes, being volcanic, the Lago Martianez in Puerto de la Cruz is a great place for the family to spend an afternoon. The attraction is made up of seven swimming pools, including a large lake and several children’s pools. Aver-

age temperatures are mid 20s so even at night there is no need to pack a cardi or shawl as it will only be taking up space in your suitcase.

July Highlights

You’ll find a whole array of cultural events on offer. You’ll be able to enjoy popular festivities, take part in celebrations and you’ll be particularly captivated by a visit to Puerto de la Cruz when you can experience the resort come to life with the Virgen del Carmen fiesta around the 16th. This is where a giant statue of the ‘Virgen’ is placed on a small fishing boat and taken on a trip around the bay. People attend from all over the island and take part in the water fights and swim in the harbour, this makes for great fun in what many consider the ‘reserved’ resort of the north. Another event which takes place in July is Dia de la Trilla, which gives an in-

sight into the history of Tenerife. Held annually in El Tanque toward the end of the month, this event sees horses and oxen threshing wheat as people in traditional Canarian dress eat local bread and cheese.

Other Celebrations in July are:

• 13th Fiesta San Pedro Apostle –Tasagaya Stadium Guimar Time: 21:30 • 14th Pilgrimage of San Benito Abad in La Laguna • Nuestra Señora del Carmen in La Cartaya - Second Week of July • 16th Fiestas del Carmen • 21st Pilgrimage of Santa Ana and San Joaquin in The Ortigal, La Laguna • 25th Santiago Apóstol Los Realejos • 28th Pilgrimage of the Virgen de las Nieves (Virgin of the Snows) in La Laguna • Santa Marta los Toscas Last Week of July

L

atest figures from the Tenerife Tourism Corporation show that visitor arrivals from the UK to the island rose by an incredible 14.2% in the month of May, representing 136,846 arrivals from the biggest source market. From January to May 2013, the largest of the Canary Islands received a total of 630,418 Britons, up 1.8% with respect to 2012 figures. The south of the island continues to be the most popular hotspot for UK holidaymakers with a total of 133,755 Britons heading to the resorts in this area. However, other areas such as Santa Cruz – the island’s capital city – and the north of Tenerife have also seen a increase in tourism figures in May 2013 compared to the same month last year:

+27.3% and +2.3% respectively. With regards to these positive figures, Pia Louw, Travel Industry and Promotion Director at the Tenerife Tourism Corporation, commented: “We’re thrilled to see these amazing figures and to know that the island continues to be one of the UK’s favourite holiday destinations, despite the current economic situation. Tenerife offers great value for money and we know our island is very popular with those seeking guaranteed sunshine for a competitive price.” Approximately 1.6 million Brits visit Tenerife each year, making it one of the UK’s favourite holiday destinations. A year round sunny climate, a selection of some of Europe’s highest quality and stunning hotels, superb food and a wide range of diverse activities are just some of the reasons why the island attracts so many visitors to the island, which boasts an unrivalled repeat visitor rate of nearly 80% from the UK market.

Pregnancy Healthcare in Spain

If getting pregnant in Spain or having your baby in Spain is an option you are considering then you should find out about the healthcare options available to you before you decide where best to give birth to your baby.

You may find that most pregnancy options are not covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) so it is advisable that you assess your healthcare options and have a Spanish social security number and health insurance in place before you fall pregnant. The EHIC replaced the E111 which was phased out on January 1st 2006 and is primarily for emergency healthcare requirements in Spain and is aimed at tourists, so if you are planning on being in Spain for a prolonged period to see out a pregnancy and give birth, you would do best to have your own healthcare policy in place as it is considered a non-emergency. Bear in mind that some insurance policies will also only cover you in case of pregnancy if the policy is taken out a certain amount of time prior to actually falling pregnant and this could be around 10 months before you conceive.

Healthcare in Spain

If you are planning to stay in Spain or if you already live in Spain you

should have an NIE number. The NIE number is a unique tax number for foreigners in Spain and is needed to do anything from opening a bank account, to buying a house, to getting a social security number and you can get your NIE through an application via the local police station.

Social Security The Public Health System

Once you have your NIE you can apply for a Social Security number which can be compared to the UK system in which the monthly contributions made entitle you to maternity pay and free healthcare. Statutory maternity leave in Spain currently stands at 12 weeks which the mother has the choice to take either before or after the baby is born. This amount increases for multiple births by 2 extra weeks per child. Fathers are also granted paid paternity leave for 15 days but in 2015 this is to be increased to 30 days.

Private Healthcare

Many ex-pats may decide to opt for a private insurance policy, allowing them greater flexibility as to the level of healthcare available. The healthcare system is generally considered to be of a high level in Spain and state owned hospitals as well as private hospitals can be found all over Spain. As far as pregnancy is concerned,

private healthcare means that you will get additional scans during your pregnancy. A scan is often done during your first booking in or initial appointment at the hospital as well as the initial blood tests to confirm pregnancy. Also, a doctor in the private system may also offer you pregnancy supplements to take such as Femibion which has the recommended amounts of folic acid to

Heatwave Warning

janetanscombe.com I know it’s summer and we can expect it to be hot, but a particular Saharan weather front is heading our way making temperatures rise above 35º from Tuesday, with the increase noticeable as early as this Sunday. No doubt there will be various coloured alerts in due course from Aemet, but all we need to know is that it’s going to be very hot, especially in the medianías and the south of Tenerife. The heatwave is expected to last at least several days to a week, and so it’s worth reiterating the health advice issued by the health department for summer wellbeing.

Sanidad says that the symptoms of being heat-affected include fainting or lightheadedness, nausea, and palpitations. Children might become irritable and lose their appetite. The Health department says that with calimas, too, the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, and particularly those with respiratory problems should take extra care, and advise anyone feeling any symptoms to try to cool themselves immediately,

drink water, and if they do not feel better very quickly, to seek medical help.

General advice to protect from sun and heat is:

• to stay in places shaded from the sun and in the cooler rooms • to keep the blinds down during sunlight hours • to open windows overnight to cool dwellings • to use fans or air conditioning to cool the environment where possible • to be careful of dramatic temperature variations when changing environments • to avoid direct sunlight, and if going out is inevitable, wear a cap or a hat, and lightweight, light coloured clothing, and try to walk through shaded areas or with an umbrella for pro-

tection, taking breaks in cool places • to carry water always and sip it frequently • not to leave children or elderly people inside a closed car • to avoid strenuous activities in the central hours of the day • to eat light meals and refreshments rich in water and mineral salts, such as fruits and vegetables, which help to replenish salts lost by sweating • not to drink alcoholic beverages • to help others, particularly those who might be sick or old people, living alone • to consult a doctor if you are taking medication that can influence your body’s ability to regulate temperature • to call 112 for any information

take during the first trimester. Once you know you are pregnant, you should make an appointment to see your Doctor as soon as possible.

Canarian Tomatoes Likely To Disappear

The president of the National Federation of Self-Employed Workers (CEAT) and of the Agricultural Association of Young Growers (Asaja), Pedro Barato, warned that the Canarian tomato sector is in need of support because “It cannot withstand the recession and it will likely disappear next year. Barato, who met with the Canarian Regional President, Paulino Rivero, made the statement after the Parliament of the Canary Islands asked Spain and the European Union to offer support for the crop. “Canarian tomatoes have two competitors; in the past it was only Morocco, but now it is also the Peninsula, and due to its peculiarity it should receive more financial support,” he said after his meeting with Rivero.

He expressed his commitment to convey the sector’s concerns to the Minister of Agriculture, “As the sector cannot take the recession anymore and is very likely to disappear.” Pedro Barato said to be very satisfied after his meeting, where he was informed of the plans from the Regional Government to offer funding to

self-employed workers and small and medium firms. He stressed that “the president was very receptive to entrepreneurs, but he also demands for companies to describe the situation as it is, and not worse. Pedro Barato travelled to Tenerife to attend a meeting on the preliminary draft legislation for entrepreneurs organised by the Intersectoral Association of Self-employed Workers of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (CEAT Tenerife). Before this meeting, accompanied by the president of CEAT Tenerife, Francisco Mesa, he also visited the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, the president of the Island Council of Tenerife, Ricardo Melchior, and the president of the Canarian Government, Paulino Rivero.

Balcony Deaths – Mainland News In Holiday Makers Warned Brief A former top member of Spain’s ruling party has been remanded in custody as part of a broad probe into fraud and corruption. Judge Pablo Ruz ordered Luis Barcenas detention over allegations including money laundering and tax fraud, saying the move was aimed at preventing him from fleeing and to preserve evidence. In February, the court confiscated Barcenas’s passport and banned him from leaving the country. He stands accused of channelling undeclared payments to top party members and is also being investigated over tens of millions of euros he allegedly held in Swiss accounts. Prosecutors had warned that Barcenas was a flight risk. Spanish police have smashed two rival Chinese rings that brought women from China, some of them minors, to Spain with the promise of high paying jobs and then forced them into prostitution. The operation, carried out in cooperation with French police, led to the arrest of 26 suspects in Spain and 25 in France as well as “the liberation of 25 victims”, according to a statement: “The victims, some of them minors, were recruited in their homeland with the promise of a job in Spain with a monthly salary of over 4,000 euros,” it said. The women were sent to Spain on fake visas and charged between USD 15,600 and USD 18,200 for the trip, part of which had to be paid before they left China. Once in Spain, the rings seized the women’s passports and kept them in tiny windowless rooms in Parla, Madrid. The women were forced to work as prostitutes for at least a year and turn over 40 per cent of their income. Police seized 3,500 euros and 1,800 euros in cash as well as several weapons and four cars. The two rings owned 11 properties with a combined value of around 2.75 million euros, the police statement added. Confederations Cup finalists Brazil and Spain are gifting autographed commemorative shirts to ailing South African former president Nelson Mandela, Fifa president Sepp Blatter revealed. “To Mandela, a gift from Brazilian national team and wish you a good recover (sic)”, read the inscription on the Brazil shirt which Blatter, flanked by Brazilian Football Confederation president Jose Maria Marin and Spanish counterpart Angel Maria Villar Llona, held aloft. Earlier, Blatter, who presented the shirts to Tokyo Sexwale, representing the Nelson Mandela Foundation, issued a short tribute to the ailing former leader: “The strength of the world’s most popular game which you love so much, football, reaches out to you. With this gesture, the football world wants to tell you how much we are thinking about you.” Sexwale will present the shirts to Mandela on his return from Brazil. Industry Minister Jose Manuel Soria has confirmed that Spain will contest an EU Commission decision expected later this month that would mean repayment of more than 3 billion euros in tax benefits granted for the purchase of ships between 2005 and 2011. EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said he would ask the Commission to rule on companies that purchased ships or financed shipbuilding must return tax benefits they received in those years under the Spanish tax scheme because they constitute state aid. A range of Spanish companies, from the textile sector to banks, invested in shipping to receive the tax benefits, which they would have to return if the Commission accepts Almunia’s recommendation. Almunia has said that shipbuilders themselves would not have to return any funds. The European Commission began an investigation in 2011 into the tax benefits. At the time, the Commission said the programme allowed maritime transport companies to purchase ships at prices between 20-30% lower than the market price.

A British holidaymaker has been killed and several others hurt after falling from balconies, even though the summer getaway hasn’t officially started.

The Foreign Office reported it was aware of seven cases so far this year half the figure for the whole of 2012. Four people were injured - one of them fatally - in June alone. Many falls involve some of the three million young holidaymakers who head overseas every summer, sometimes drinking vast amounts of alcohol or taking drugs. They are especially common in popular resorts such as Spain. Amid fears of further balcony deaths this summer, the Foreign Office and Association of British Tour Operators (ABTA) have launched a new campaign warning of the dangers of high-rise accommodation. A leaflet offering advice on staying safe features a picture of the injuries Jake Evans suffered after falling head first from a balcony in Magaluf while reaching for a cigarette lighter. The 19-year-old from Liverpool fell seven floors onto a plastic sun lounger, fracturing his skull, snapping his wrist and breaking all the fingers on his right hand. He said: “Drinking most definitely affects your judgement. Had I been sober I’m sure I wouldn’t have made the same decision to lean over for the lighter. Looking at the height I fell and my injuries I know I’m lucky to be alive. But the accident has changed my life. I have recurring problems with my back and right

wrist and doctors have told me I probably always will.” A foreign Office spokesperson said: “Our staff have seen the devastating ef-

fects a momentary lapse in judgement can have on victims and their families and we are working hard to ensure people understand the risks.”

Mozilla Launches Web Based OS Smartphones

Mozilla has announced the release of the first Web-based Firefox mobile OS smartphones in Spain and Poland, with more coming soon to other regions of the world.

ZTE began selling the ZTE Open smartphone on Tuesday for the Spanish market through wireless carrier Telefonica, the companies announced in a statement, putting the equivalent price at about 70 Euros with an agreement. Alcatel will offer the One Touch Fire smartphone with the Firefox OS, Mozilla said. Deutsche Telekom will soon launch a Firefox OS smartphone in Poland -- possibly the One Touch -but as yet hasn’t disclosed which model. A Norwegian carrier, Telenor, will also launch its first Firefox OS phones in Central and Eastern Europe later this year. Mozilla said it is working with more than 20 hardware and operator partners globally and will launch in more markets later this year. ZTE and Mozilla first discussed a Firefox OS device at the CES trade show in Las Vegas in January. Mozilla had earlier discussed launching the Alcatel One Touch as well. Chris Lee, director of the Firefox OS at Mozilla, said in a video that the One Touch and the Open are the world’s first HTML 5 smartphones. He demonstrated the use of the Firefox OS, and the use of the camera, as well as Facebook and the Here maps application. The video also describes a Firefox Marketplace, with a variety of apps for games, music, news and productivity. The Firefox OS is an extension of the browser that already runs on desktop and mobile computers and is used by “hundreds of millions of people,” Mozilla said. Mozilla and Telefonica said the Firefox OS allows consumers to buy a smartphone

“based entirely on open Web standards that free consumers and developers from the constraints of existing closed ecosystems by using the Web as the platform for all functionality and applications.”

hICLaNa de la frontera, is a beautiful resort in the southwest of spain, known for its sandy beaches lined with trees, sprawling golf courses and natural parks around the Bay of Cadiz. The scenery is spectacular. Now the town is adding another green site to its list of attractions: the world’s first plant to convert sewage into clean energy.

The facility in Chiclana de la Frontera uses raw sewage and sunlight to produce algae-based biofuel as part of a 12 million euro project in the search for alternative energies and decrease dependence on foreign oil. The town was chosen because of its ample sunlight and a long stretch of land that runs along ocean side salt fields where algae can be easily grown in man-made ponds. It is still in its pilot phase, but the plant harvested its first crop of algae in May and expects to fuel its first car by December. Biomass simply refers to biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. Once highlighted by President Obama as the fuel of the future, biomass has recently been discredited by some critics who believe the large quantities of energy, water and chemicals needed to produce it makes the process unsustainable. But, not everyone agrees with this assessment: biomass plants are in operation across the UK as it tries

to meet the EU goal of deriving 20% of energy from renewable sources by 2020. Biomass contributes the second highest amount after offshore wind power. And this project in Chiclana, called All-gas to sound like “algas” or sea-

weed in Spanish, also sets out to prove the potential of biomass, becoming the first municipal wastewater plant using cultivated algae as a source for biofuel. All-gas expects the plant to be fully up and running by 2015, when

it aims to generate annual biofuel production worth 100,000 euros, or enough biofuel to run about 200 cars or 10 city rubbish trucks a year. However, whether the project is able to fuel cars on a large scale will depend on the amount and qual-

ity of biofuel it can produce, and at what cost. In Spain, the All-gas model is still too new for anyone to know for sure how well it will work, but project leader Frank Rogalla is optimistic.

www.tenerife-weekly.com Spain’s government is to campaign for new laws that will give the Spanish football league control over the collective sale of television rights in a move to improve club finances, collect outstanding taxes, and increase competitiveness.

Miguel Cardenal, president of Spain’s Sports Council, has said that he wants to present the new law by the end of this year to give the league more power over the individual clubs. Currently, powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid earn several times more than the rest of Spain’s clubs from TV rights which they sell individually. Barcelona and Madrid earn a reported 140 million euros each from television revenues, while the next-highest earner, Atletico Madrid, makes 47 million euros and small fry Rayo Vallecano just 14 million euros. The two top earners have divvied up the last nine league titles between them. Spain’s football clubs have reduced their tax debts by 80 million euros but still owe the tax office around 670 million euros. Cardenal said that having the league control TV revenues would increase transparency and improve the state’s ability to collect on its tax bills: “The centralization (of TV rights) would let the public administrations

Spanish Police Arrest FBI Wanted Woman

A woman accused of hiring someone to kill her wealthy Canadian husband on the U.S. Caribbean island of Puerto Rico has been arrested by police in Spain after being hunted for five years in the alleged murder-forhire scheme, according to the FBI.

Moises Quinones, the FBI’s spokesman in Puerto Rico, said Aurea Vazquez Rijos was arrested by the Spanish police at an airport in Madrid. The Puerto Rican suspect was taken into custody as she was leaving a flight from Italy, where she has lived for years and gave birth to another man’s twins. A U.S. grand jury charged Vazquez in 2008 with offering a man $3 million to kill her husband, property developer Adam Anhang. The indictment said that Vazquez offered Pabon money and lured Anhang to the tourist district the night of his death. The indictment

said two other unidentified people were involved in the plot. She denied the charges but refused to cooperate with investigators and fled Puerto Rico for Italy, where she lived in Florence and more recently Venice. Abe Anhang, the victim’s father, said authorities told him that Vazquez’s sister and her former husband have also been charged and arrested in Puerto Rico in connection with his son’s killing in 2005: “We’re hopeful that after such a long time that justice will be done. It’s been almost five years since she’s been a fugitive in Italy.” After Anhang’s murder, Vazquez refused to cooperate with investigators and filed a civil suit against her late husband’s family, seeking $1 million in damages and millions more from his estate. A judge in Puerto Rico dismissed her suit. Anhang, 32, was beaten and stabbed to death in a popular tourist district of the Puerto Rican capital in September 2005 as he

walked with Vazquez. He was killed as the couple walked from a restaurant he had bought for her in historic Old San Juan where they discussed their pending divorce. She sustained minor injuries in the attack. A wrongfully convicted Puerto Rican man spent eight months in a maximum security prison for the high-profile slaying of Anhang before being released in June 2008 after another man, Alex Pabon Colon, was indicted for the murder. Since then, the FBI has been working to arrest Vazquez but ran into difficulties since Italy does not extradite suspects who face the death penalty. The FBI said the extradition process from Spain could take between six and nine months. The U.S. agency said the arrest of the Puerto Rican fugitive was the result of a joint effort between the FBI’s legal attaches, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Puerto Rico, Spanish police, Interpol and U.S. Department of Justice.

be the first to get paid,” he said. “35% of revenues from TV rights won’t be passed on to the clubs that can’t show they are up to date on their payments.” Cardenal also said the government’s new plan for sustainability has set a target of reducing Spain’s football leagues debts from 4 billion euros to 3 million euros by 2016. To achieve this goal, Cardenal said the government’s plan called for clubs to cut their collective budget for the season from 750 million euros to 650 million euros. He does however, acknowledge that the push to balance club finances could lead to more top players being sold to foreign leagues and to the widening of the competition gap between Barcelona and Madrid and all the rest. “Real Madrid and Barcelona have a level of debt that is acceptable given their capacity to earn revenues,” he said. “The plan calls for a reduction of 12-13% affecting most of the other teams, and some of them will say they have to sell players.” Cardenal argued the talent drain to leagues like the Premier League, which is home to a growing number of Spanish internationals such as Fernando Torres, David Silva and Juan Mata, is the new status quo. “We have become an exporting country,” Cardenal said. “It’s a historic change and Spanish football has to recognize it.”

Gromit Takes Over Bristol

Some of the 80 sculptures were driven into Bristol on the harbour steam train by Nick Park, creator of the animated film characters Wallace and Gromit. They were installed at key locations across the city to form the ‘Gromit Unleashed’ trail, which was launched on Monday, 1st July. The rail has been organised by Aardman Animations and the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity - Wallace & Gromit’s Grant Appeal – and will run for 10 weeks. Around 40 local artists from Bristol and the south west are due to take part in the arts trail, demonstrating creative talent in the area with their wide-ranging designs. Individual businesses have sponsored the sculptures, which will be auctioned on October 3.

Germany Jails Cost Mr & Mrs Spies Of A

A court in Germany has jailed a married couple convicted of spying for Russia. Andreas and Heidrun Anschlag, known only by the fake names on the Austrian passports they used to enter Germany, were sentenced to six-anda-half years and five-and-a-half years respectively.

According to a report from the Energy Saving Trust (EST) Foundation, overfilling your kettle costs British households £68m a year. Spending just a minute less in the shower could save a total of £215m a year across the country. Around three-quarters of homes are using their kettles to boil more water than they need, 95% of people boil the kettle every day and 40% boil the kettle five times a day or more. The pair, thought to be in their 40s or 50s, were arrested in October 2011 and charged with spying for more than 20 years. They were planted in the former West Germany in 1988 by the Soviet Union’s KGB and later worked for its successor the SVR. The couple, posed as middle class Austrian citizens who were born and grew up in South America, and obtained and passed on Nato and EU political and military secrets to the Russians. “Like wheels in a clockwork, for better or worse, they were dependent on each other for the success of the mission,” said presiding judge Sabine Roggenbrod.

Andreas Anschlag studied engineering and worked in the car industry while Heidrun was a housewife. According to reports, even their daughter had no idea about their double lives. The couple left the documents in “dead-letter boxes”, such as under certain trees, from where they were picked up by employees of the Russian consulate general in Bonn. They communicated with Russia via short-wave radio, text messages sent on a satellite phone and hidden messages in comments in YouTube videos under agreed names, the court heard. The defendants, whose alias surname means “attack” in German, had refused to con-

firm any details about their identity, but their defence lawyer said they had Russian citizenship. “The court could not uncover your true identities,” Roggenbrod told the two accused. “We don’t know where you were born or your real names.” But she stressed: “The court is convinced that they knew right until the end exactly which master they served and for what purpose.” A Dutch court in April sentenced a Dutch diplomat to 12 years in prison for delivering confidential EU and Nato documents to Russian agents. The Anschlags allegedly compiled the information he gathered and sent it on to Russia’s intelligence agency.

The study of 86,000 British homes found the average shower lasts seven and a half minutes, but that cutting 60 seconds off that time could save households £215m on their energy bills each year. Britons use more than two billion litres of water showering every day, with each person showering on average 4.4 times a week and taking 1.3 baths. The average household washes dishes by hand 10 times a week and uses a dishwasher three times a week. But the EST said larger households could make greater energy and water savings by using an efficient, modern dishwasher rather than washing by hand. EST water strategy manager Andrew Tucker said: “When people think of energy use they think of heating and lighting, running electrical appliances or filling the car with petrol. It’s all too easy to turn on the tap and not think about the consequences. But there is an environmental and energy cost attached to water which many people do not consider. On average, hot water use contributes £228 to the average annual combined energy bill.” The EST said consumers could save money and water by installing an “eco” shower head, washing clothes at 30C and only filling the kettle by the required amount.

BrITIsh doctors have developed the first blood test for postnatal depression that could ease the suffering of tens of thousands of women affected every year.

Doctors believe a £10 screening test they have developed – which could be administered as part of ordinary NHS antenatal checks – would allow women found to be at risk to receive treatment for the disease before they give birth. Around one in seven pregnant women a year develop some level of depression in the first three months after giving birth. In severe cases it can result in new mums committing suicide or harming their babies. Professor Dimitris Grammatopoulos, who led the research at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, said the research was “extremely important”. He said: “There is evidence that if you can identify women at risk early you could treat early or introduce measures to prevent or stop the process of the disease.” The early warning should mean that simple support from families and health professionals is enough to prevent symptoms developing. A study of 200 pregnant women, published in the current edition of the Journal of Psychiatric Research, found two molecular “signatures” in the genes that increased the risk of postnatal depression by up to five times. Although previous research has found genetic “markers” linked to the condition, this is the first time that genetic variations have been found in the hormonal path-

way that triggers it. It is believed that changes in oestrogen levels during pregnancy make women more sensitive to the stress hormone cortisol. But whereas most women “reset” the hormonal imbalance soon after their baby is born, those with the genetic variations are unable to do so, leading to postnatal depression. Prof Grammatopoulos said he could test women for the genetic changes for between £30 and £40. But automating the test so that robots could screen large numbers of samples would bring the cost down to just £10. And he is looking for further genetic changes, called single nucleotide polymorphisms, to increase the predictive power of the test. He said blood samples already taken routinely in the early stages of pregnancy could then be screened: “Usually we focus on the mother, but the negative impact on the child is also immense,” Prof Grammatopoulos said. Professor Grammatopoulos is now carrying out a larger study on 1,500 women to help refine the test. Pregnant women interested in taking part should email info@uhcw.nhs. uk

The end Is nigh Ba Test e-Tags – But not for 1 for Luggage Billion Years a BrITIsh airways has announced plans to test reusable luggage tags made from electronic paper. flight information can be transmitted to the tag via the ticket holder’s smartphone, using data from the airline app stored after digital check-in. Currently operators print off individual paper tags for every bag checked in before each flight.

NEW study suggests that all animals and plants will vanish from the Earth within the next billion years, Ironically the end of the world is going to arrive as a result of too little carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, rather than too much.

Currently experts are trying to find ways to cut levels of the greenhouse gas to prevent global warming running out of control. But as the Sun ages and grows hotter, greater evaporation and chemical reactions with rainwater will take away more and more carbon dioxide. In less than a billion years, its levels will be too low for photosynthesising plants to survive, say scientists. When that happens, life as we know it on Earth will cease to exist. With the loss of plants, herbivorous animals will also die out, as well as the carnivores that prey on them. Eventually microbes will be all that remains - and for the majority of them even their days will be numbered. After another billion years, the oceans will have dried out completely leaving only the hardiest bugs. Astrobiologist Jack

The electronic tags are to be tested by staff before being made available to some passengers later in the year. If these tests are successful, the tags will launch in 2014. Despite various changes to try to speed up airport check-in procedures, the process of dropping off luggage had remained time consuming according to a BA Spokesperson: “The old security questions such as, ‘Did you pack your bag yourself?’ are no longer a legal requirement, but the idea of queuing to check in your bag has never gone away,” he said. “The e-tag still involves going to a desk, but you litO’Malley-James, from the University of St Andrews, said: “The far-future Earth will be very hostile to life by this point. All living things require liquid water, so any remaining life will be restricted to pockets of liquid water, perhaps at cooler, higher altitudes or in caves underground.” The surviving organisms would also have to cope with extreme high temperatures and intense ultraviolet radiation, he

roaming Charges Cut

ThE cost of using a mobile phone in another European union country has fallen again as of last Monday. New Eu limits came into force which reduced the amount mobile phone providers can charge for making or receiving calls abroad. It also brings down the cost of accessing the internet.

Over the past six years the EU has been forcing prices down by placing a cap on the charges providers can impose and reducing that limit each year. The cost of making mobile phone calls outside a person’s own country, known as roaming, has traditionally been

said. The predictions are based on a computer simulation of the impact long-term changes to the Sun are likely to have on Earth. As the Sun ages over the next billion years or so, it is expected to remain stable but to grow steadily brighter. The increasingly intense radiation will cause the Earth to heat up to such an extent that the oceans start to evaporate.

very high. The latest cuts came into force, when the maximum cost of making a call fell by a fifth to 24 euro cents a minute or just over 20p, plus the VAT rate applicable in the relevant EU country. But the biggest change is to data charges the cost of using the internet or applications linked to it. That has been cut by roughly a third to 45 euro cents per megabyte or about 38.5p, plus VAT. However, these reductions only apply within the borders of the European Union. In other countries charges both for making calls and for using the internet are likely to remain higher.

erally just drop your bag off and someone has a scanner.” Customers at some airports can now print out their own luggage tags at kiosks, but that still requires more time than scanning information direct from a phone, although it is considerably cheaper for the airline. “[The e-tag] is more expensive, but ultimately it is re-usable - you would acquire and use it multiple times,” said Lewis Freeman, an industrial designer from Designworks, which worked on the electronic tag casing. “The life of the product is up to five years. I imagine the technology would move on faster than the tag would need replacing.”

Brosnan’s daughter Loses Cancer Battle

PIErCE Brosnan’s daughter Charlotte has died of ovarian cancer aged just 41 after a three-year battle with the disease. her mother, Cassandra harris, died from the same type of cancer in 1991 while married to Brosnan. harris also lost her own mother to ovarian cancer.

Charlotte married boyfriend Alex Smith in secret just two weeks before her tragic death, it has been revealed. The 41-year-old and artist beau Alex are said to have tied the knot in front of a small group of family and friends on 14th June, with her 15-year-old daughter Isabella, acting as bridesmaid. She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean. Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl. We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon,” the actor said. “We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.” The actor adopted Charlotte and her brother Christopher in the 1980s after the death of their father and the children took Brosnan’s name. He had another son, Sean, with Cassandra Harris in 1983. So VerY BrITISH!!!

D

o you hate disturbing the cabin crew; feel guilty just walking through customs and worry that you might just have triggered a monsoon just by purchasing barbecue food? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, congratulations: you are most definitely British.

A new Twitter feed, Very British Problems, created by blogger Rob Temple is dedicated to the very British love of ‘making life awkward for ourselves, one rainy day at a time’ - and is packed with problems that most of us will recognise, cringing. With summer finally visiting the UK, Temple has flooded @SoVeryBritish with seasonal British dilemmas that include worrying about Wimbledon, troubles with tipping and the need to say sorry at all times.

Other seasonal problems include being over optimistic about the chances of sunshine, a need to return from your summer holiday lobster red as a badge of honour and drinking too much on bank holidays. ‘Noticed a small patch of blue sky and immediately purchased 24 cases of Pimms’, reads one post while another says: ‘Being more excited to have an airport beer at 7am than any part of the rest of your holiday.’ Other priceless posts familiar to many of us include ‘Being required by law to drink ferociously on the last day of a Bank Holiday, even though you have to go to work the next day’ and ‘Being told you’ve caught the sun, indicating you’re burnt to an absolute crisp.’ The British obsession with being polite at all times also features in more than a few entries, including one which reads: ‘Concentrating to within an inch of your life on the pre-flight safety briefing, to compensate for those ignoring it.’ Another says: ‘Worrying you’ve accidentally packed three kilos of cocaine and a dead goat as you stroll through “Nothing to declare”’ - proof that British habits such as constantly worrying and apologising to everyone in sight don’t disappear when the sun comes out. The Twitter feed is one of a series of blogs that focus on problems experienced by the famously self-effacing Brits. British People Problems originally started life as a Reddit post that went viral - proving that the world enjoys watching those of us on this side of the Atlantic struggle with overbearing politeness, self-sacrificing proprietary and the innumerable times where we feel honour bound to apologise. A number of blogs are now dedicated to Brit-

ish dilemmas surrounding the national fondness for Marmite and tea, appreciation for animals and pointed modesty have appeared, although few are as funny as Temple’s effort. While @SoVeryBritish, which launches a compendium of British People Problems in October, does love a good Marmite conundrum, it also has a genius for identifying summer problems, and hits the nail on the head with tweets on the thorny issue of communication.

‘Receiving an email ending in “Regards” and wondering what you’ve done to earn such hate’ reads one, while another says: ‘Running out of ways to say thanks when a succession of doors are held open for you, having already deployed “cheers”, “ta” and “nice one”.’ As if struggling with more Pimms than any person could possibly drink wasn’t hard enough, it seems we can’t even manage to get friends over to help us out!

So Very British: Classically Anglo-Saxon Summer Conundrums

• Noticing a small patch of blue sky and immediately buying 24 cases of Pimms • Missing winter whenever the faint sound of buzzing causes you to hide in the nearest cupboard • Being told you’ve caught the sun, you’re burnt to a crisp • Being unable to remember the last time you ended a conversation without muttering: “Roll on summer, that’s what I say” • Walking through open barriers at a train station as if smuggling drugs through customs, despite having bought a ticket • Concentrating to within an inch of your life on the pre-flight safety briefing, to compensate for those ignoring it • Having an uneasy feeling that the sky has been stockpiling rain for Wimbledon • Worrying you might have just triggered a monsoon by purchasing barbecue food • Worrying you’ve accidentally packed three kilos of cocaine and a dead goat as you pass through ‘Nothing to declare’ • Inviting someone to a party, then providing a list of reasons not to come in case they don’t fancy it • Saying sorry as a way of catching someone’s attention • The anxious feeling when clocking the stranger deciding to join the queue at your side rather than behind you • Protecting your area at baggage reclaim as if the lives of your family depend on it • Straining not to thank the waiter for every small item he clears, so you can deliver one big thanks at the end • Being told to enjoy your meal, flight, stay or birthday and replying “Thanks, you too!” • Secretly hoping it stays cold so there’s always something to talk about • Allowing your bladder to explode rather than wake a fellow plane passenger • Never under any circumstance pressing the call button on a plane, in case you disturb the cabin crew

aMazoN has put even more pressure onto high street retailers by vowing to give customers a free digital version of any CD or vinyl record they buy on the website. The us giant is also backdating the offer to 1999 under its new “autorip” service, meaning that music fans will be given MP3 files of every album they have bought from amazon since it launched in the uK.

Customers can cash in on the deal by opening a Cloud Player account on the Amazon website. Some 350,000 CDs, including the top 100 of the past decade, are covered by the offer. Amazon played down talk of a war with Apple iTunes or Google and said it simply wanted to give something back to Brits. Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and chief executive, said the company “loved these opportunities to do something extra

for our customers”. But experts last night said it sent out a huge challenge to Apple - and that it could sound the death knell of some of the last remaining music stores on Britain’s high streets. Bryan Roberts, analyst at Kantar Retail, said: “It’s bound to affect Apple as there are a big number of people that still like having the physical version of an album. As far as the likes of HMV are concerned it just adds another couple of inches to the mountain they have to climb to get close to competing with Amazon. Amazon has been beating them on price, assortment, customer service so the fact they have added a free digital CD is just one more thing. It’s not going to help by any stretch.” Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice-president for music, would not comment on the prospect of any backlash given the fierce row over Amazon’s tax affairs in the UK. He said: “I tend to stay out of tax matters, even back home in the US.” But he explained: “We are an e-commerce retailer and we are going to do things

OMG Moments In Film

Warning, Contains SPOILERS!! Cease to read if you haven’t seen the movie printed in capitals and would like to be surprised when you do!! Last week I watched the jaw- dropping last 2 episodes of “Game of Thrones” season 3 and was completely gobsmacked by the scenes I witnessed. I love it when a well scripted plot can leave you speechless and make you forget to breathe, so I came up with this list - if there’s one or two on here you’ve haven’t watched yet, do yourself a favour and get hold of a copy and prepare to be knocked sideways by a moment you could have never expected!! 1: THE USUAL SUSPECTS When our narrator, the weaselly con man Verbal Kint, (Kevin Spacey) finishes the incredible story of criminal Mastermind Keyser Soze, the interviewing detective releases him in disgust. As he glances around the interrogation room he realises that keywords and names are dotted all around the room on objects like a coffee mug and on a pin-board - he’s made it all up....cut to Spacey’s pathetic crippled snitch, limping along the street, the limp disappears, the withered hand straightens out- from loser to kingpin in seconds...... Verbal is Keyser Soze!! 2: PLANET OF THE APES Not the dreadful Tim Burton remake, when Charlton Heston escapes the intelligent human enslaving apes on a distant post-apocalyptic planet-a quick horse ride across a beach reveals a half-buried ruin… The statue of liberty... you’re on Earth Chuck!!! 3: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

5 words...... “No, I am your father” Shame on you if you haven’t seen this one. 4. THE SIXTH SENSE So Haley Joel Osment “sees dead people” and Bruce Willis is shot at close range in the opening scene......how come we don’t see it coming? 5: SHUTTER ISLAND Leo DiCaprio’s noir detective, sent to the island’s mental hospital to search for a missing resident… is actually a patient-the entire movie plot a complex treatment to try to treat his mental condition. 6: FIGHT CLUB Brad Pitts anarchic Tyler Durden, who turns Ed Norton’s boring existence upside down with fight clubs and terrorist plot…, is actually just his alter-ego! 7: PSYCHO Hitchcock practically invented the shock twist when Norman Bates domineering, controlling matriarch who’s over protectiveness toward her son turns her homicidal.... Is revealed to be a withered corpse- turns out young Norm is donning ma’s wig and shawl and raiding the knife drawer at shower time! 8: THE CRYING GAME Just your average IRA thrill-

er when a former member agrees to protect the girlfriend of a man the terrorist group hold hostage after his death, a woman he then falls for himself. Only problem is.........turns out she’s a he. 9: SE7EN After “Deadly Sins” killer, John Doe turns himself in, he leads detectives Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt to one more victim......Pitt’s pregnant wives severed head fedexed to the location in order to tempt Pitt’s character to commit the last of the 7 deadly sins- Revenge. 10: PRIMAL FEAR When Aaron, a young altar boy with a severe stutter is put on trial for murdering his priest, his defence lawyer’s research reveals the poor boy has a multiple personality disorder brought on by years of abuse by the priest and created a sociopathic personality called Roy who killed him.......after being found not guilty by means of insanity Roy reveals he is the true personality and he made Aaron up to get away with murder!! If anyone a has a favourite movie with a twist that I’ve not mentioned, send me an email to marc@tenerife-weekly.com

Beiber Ex Beds Ed?

As you well know, I’m not a Belieber I’ll never forgive Usher for unleashing that toxic chipmunk on us all-as well as being at best the luckiest slightly talented teen on Earth, he seems to be rapidly moving to the top of the list of the world’s most obnoxious bumhole!!

So when things don’t go his way forgive me for taking some pleasure from it.... Imagine my delight when rumours began popping up about his old flame Selena Gomez dating our very own Ed Sheeran after being set up by Taylor Swift, who Ed recently duetted with. That must really sting the old Beibster - I mean not only is Ed a much better singer and a very talented songwriter who writes all his own material - HE’S GINGER!! Or as my mate Spud would put it “Tahitian sunrise” or “African sunset”!! Bet that wiped the smug grin off The Bieb’s face!!

So What Was It?

Last week I asked if anyone knew what this photo was all about.

Well done Geoff Huxtable, Jackie Wake, Paul Messent, Andrew Findlay and of course Mea Deen for guessing that it was one of the battery operated kittens/puppies/ rats that the other original Wildboy Mea used to wrestle from the Chinese street vendors and chuck onto the roof!! Don’t worry we usually paid!! Other interesting suggestions included “a Bitter and Twisted wig” and a scorpion!!!

BrITaIN is set to become the first country in the world to allow babies with three genetic parents to be born. a landmark decision by the Department of health has opened the door to controversial treatments for inherited diseases that use donated DNa from a second donor mother.

The Department of Health has announced that the Government intends to publish draft regulations later this year in a public consultation about the IVF-based techniques to eradicate Mitochondrial Diseases. The new regulations to fertility law allowing the procedures will be issued for consultation and then debated in Parliament. Should MPs find the regulations ethically acceptable, the first patients could be treated within months. It is estimated that between five and 10 three-parent babies would be born in Britain each year. The aim of the IVF treatments is to stamp out serious Mitochondrial Diseases which can be passed from a mother to her children. Mitochondria replacement involves transferring nuclear genetic material from a mother’s egg or embryo into a donor egg or embryo that has had its nuclear DNA removed. This would allow a woman carrying Mitochondrial Diseases to have healthy children. Around one in 200 babies are born each year in the UK with defects in the mitochondria, rod-like bodies that supply cells with energy. One in 6,500 is seriously affected and can suffer potentially life-threatening diseases including a form of muscular dystrophy. Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: “Mitochondrial Disease, including heart disease, liver disease, loss of muscle coordination and other serious conditions like muscular dystrophy, can have a devastating

impact on the people who inherit it. People who have it live with debilitating illness, and women who are affected face passing it on to their children. It’s only right that we look to introduce this life-saving treatment as soon as we can.” Allowing the currently illegal techniques would mark a turning point. At present only unadulterated sperm and eggs can be used for assisted reproduction treatments. Professor Doug Turnbull, one of the leaders of the research project based at Newcastle University, said: “I am delighted that the Government is moving forward with publishing draft regulations this year and a final version for debate in Parliament next year.” But some people think the techniques are ethically questionable. The issue is that the techniques will result in a tiny trace of DNA from the donor egg’s mitochondria remaining, effectively creating a baby with three genetic parents. Josephine Quintavalle, founder of the group Comment on Reproductive Ethics (CORE), thinks the creation of children with genetic material from more than two people is incompatible with both human dignity and international law. We’re obviously outraged, but it’s not just my outrage and the outrage of many people in the United Kingdom - it’s worldwide. People just mustn’t sit back comfortably and think this is a great idea; we’re going to cure disease and get better. It’s crossing a line that many, many experts in ethics and genetics and scientists generally are very concerned about worldwide.” The researchers at Newcastle University say they need to carry out more tests on human eggs in order to make sure the techniques are proven and safe. In order to speed up that process they are asking potential donors in the North East to contact them.

so, scotland has joined Wales and Northern Ireland and started charging its shoppers a standard 5p fee for carrier bags. This money is supposed to go to charity but it is seriously open to misuse.

Whilst I am quite a green thinking person, I can’t help feeling that those shops in Spain and England, who already charge for the bags under the premise that they care about the environment are talking out of their backsides. Big supermarket chains don’t care about the environment at all. They want to be seen to care about it, but all they really care about is making more and more money. When you buy a frozen product in a box,

it usually comes inside a bag which is then placed in the box. If they really cared about helping the environment, they would spend more time on rethinking their packaging values and make some changes. I bought a tube of Pringles last week and was shocked at how much space there was at the top of the tube. Downright waste if you ask me. Having said that, the crisps themselves tasted like they were part of the packaging. You are within your rights in the UK to leave packaging at the checkout and the store then has to get rid of it. This might be a good idea. That way, the supermarkets might start to do something about excess rubbish as it will cost them to get rid of it!

Things To ponder

1. Why can’t woman put their mascara on w i t h

your toast to a horrible crisp no one would eat? What do people in China call their good plates? Why does Goofy stand on two legs when Pluto remains on four? They’re both dogs. What do you call male ballerinas? Why is a person who handles money called a broker? If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests? Did you ever notice that if you blow in a dogs face it goes mad, yet when you take him on a car ride he sticks his head right out of the window?

Croatia Joins The mess

ThEY are celebrating in Croatia because they have just become the latest country to join Europe. When so many other countries are debating whether they want to remain in the union, the Croatians are looking forward to wealth and happiness in our ever growing club.

I hope everything turns out better for them than it has for the rest of us. Time will tell! I personally love the idea of Europe, but I think that the transition was made too quickly and that we should have taken it a little more

slowly before dumping currencies and coming up with idiotic laws about the size and shape of bananas!

aPParENTLY, David and Victoria Beckham have been looking at Michael Winner’s old home which is up for sale. The mansion, which is priced at 50,000,000 pounds, seems to have attracted their attention. I can’t get to grips with anyone needing a 47 bedroomed house. It just doesn’t make sense, but then again, they have must have more money than sense.

I shudder to think what moving would be like for them after a few years living in the place. I live in a four bedroomed house and the amount of rubbish that I have accumulated will have to be dealt with before any move. The price is a bit steep however. It works out at over 1 million quid per bedroom. You can get something much cheaper than that in Tenerife, and you won’t need to buy an umbrella!

You’ve Been pooped

sPaNIsh town Brunete, near Madrid, is keeping its streets clean of dog mess by sending the deposits back to the owners in a box marked ‘Lost Property’. They started the campaign because the council felt that the situation had got out of control.

In the first week of the campaign, 20 pooper peepers patrolled the streets and public areas of the town watching for dog owners who failed to scoop the poop! When the dogs had done their duty and the owners had walked away without clearing up the mess, the volunteers spoke to the owners and struck up casual conver-

sations to find out the names of the dogs. Just by having the name of the dog and the breed, they were able to identify the owners because dogs are registered on computer at the town council headquarters The volunteers scooped the poop and wrapped it up in a box branded the council insignia - marked ‘Lost

Property’ and delivered it by courier to the owners of the dogs During one week, 147 deliveries were made and the town council has reported a 70% drop in dog fouling in the streets. What a wonderful idea, but I think I would rather have a bill come through my letterbox in a morning!

The accident happened while Cirque’s top executives, including president Daniel Lamarre, were in Las Vegas to celebrate the premiere of new show Michael Jackson One at the Mandalay Bay resort. That artist is expected to return to the show.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

These Alien Invaders are Weeds Castor Oil Plant Tenerife like so many parts of the world today has an ongoing invasion by aliens, not strange beings from other planets but invasive weeds that are not endemic to the island. These are the plants that are excellent at colonizing new territory and spreading themselves from there.

The Castor Oil Plant (Ricinus communis) is grown for its ornamental qualities in gardens in some countries including the UK, but on Tenerife it is one of the most successful species of plant that can be found on waste-ground. It has large palmate leaves and comes in a darkpurplish-bronze variety as well as the normal green type. It grows into large bushes and springs up along roadsides, on abandoned farmland, building sites and just about anywhere its beans land. It is actually one of the most poisonous plants known and the Ricine in just one bean is enough to kill a human. Another very poisonous invasive weed that is not a native of the island is the Tree Tobacco (Nicotinia glauca). As its name suggests, it forms small trees but will also flower when much smaller. It is called “Bobo” in Spanish and has the alternative English name of Mustard Tree, presumably from the colour of its flowers. It has dainty yellow tubular flow-

Tree Tobacco ers and quite large greyish-green spade-shaped leaves. Like the Castor Oil Plant it comes up on unused land all around the island and is a common sight on areas bordering roads. It is very drought tolerant and will also grow in walls and cracked concrete. Gorse (Ulex europaeus) with its very prickly stems and foliage and golden-yellow flowers is at home on the moors and mountainsides in Britain so it is perhaps surprising to meet with it in subtropical Tenerife but it does very well here. Gorse tends to be found in semi-forested and mountainous parts of the north of Tenerife. There is a lot of it growing near the ponds of Erjos. Part of the reason Gorse does so well is due to its ability to recover after fires. Even when it is burnt to the ground it soon sends new shoots up from its rootstock. It can grow quickly and take over areas of ground when more delicate native plants should be growing. The Prickly Pear cacti in the Opun-

Gorse

Nasturtium tia genus look as if they are natives of the island, and are ideally suited to the hot dry coastal areas, but these plants only managed to get a foothold on the island because they were brought here from Mexico to be grown as crops. The pads of these cacti get covered in Cochineal Bugs that used to be farmed and harvested for the red natural dye that is produced by crushing the

insects. Prickly Pear cacti are spread easily when pads of a plant get broken off and the root where they fall or get carried. The two main species you will see on Tenerife are O. ficusindica and O. dillenii. They are easily distinguished because the latter

cactus has smooth-skinned purplish red ‘pears’ and longer spines on its pads. It also tends to be the main species found in the drier south of the island. All types of Prickly Pear are useful plants though because the green pads can be eaten as a vegetable and the fruit are delicious too. The only problem is the spines so be very careful if you fancy try eating these plants. The tiny spines are very difficult to get out and very painful! The Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) is another edible plant. The flowers, seeds and leaves are all good to eat. They taste a lot like Watercress and are hot and spicy. The Nasturtium has rounded leaves and pretty yellow, red or orange flowers and is often grown from seed as a garden plant in countries like the UK. It will rapidly cover a lot of ground and is very common in the cooler north of Tenerife where it really comes into its own in the winter and spring. It can be found growing along roadsides, on banks and in waste-ground, and was originally from South America. The Bermuda Buttercup (Oxalis pes-caprae) doesn’t come from Bermuda and isn’t a buttercup but it certainly does very well as an invasive weed. It has pretty bright yellow flowers and leaves that look like those of a shamrock or four-leafed clover. The Bermuda Buttercup is a bulbous plant and springs up readily from under the ground. It spreads by runners under the soil and tiny bulbs and unless it is totally removed from the earth it rapidly grows back. Although it is a very decorative plant it is treated as an invasive weed and a serious problem in many parts of the world today. The plants I have covered here are just some of the many alien species that have invaded Tenerife.

Bermuda Buttercup

Uses For The Prickly Pear Cactus

The fruit of the Prickly Pear is also known as a “cactus fruit” or an “Indian fig.” In Spanish it is called a “tuna.” It can be used to make jellies, jam, ice-cream and drinks, or just eaten raw. On Tenerife you can get Cactus Ice-cream in Masca. It is very important to get rid of the tiny

spines or glochids on the skin though. The skins of the fruit can be peeled off or the glochids can be burned away. In Malta, Prickly Pears are used to make a pink herbal liqueur known as Bajtra. The green pads of the cactus are known in Spanish as “nopales” and are very popular in Mexican cuisine.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

four more murders – Brady Claim

PrEVIousLY unpublished letters show Moors murderer Ian Brady claimed to have killed four more people. The letters, which emerged after his bid to be transferred from a maximum security hospital to prison failed, show that he confessed to killing two men in his native Glasgow and a man and woman in Manchester.

Brady described the four additional murders as “happenings” and says his male victim in Manchester was killed “on the waste ground behind the station” and the other was a “woman in the canal”. One of his Glasgow victims was killed “above” Loch Long, at the mouth of the Clyde, Brady wrote. The letters, published in The Daily Telegraph, were written to journalist Brendan Pittaway in the 1980s. Last week Brady lost his £250,000 legal bid to be transferred to a jail after a public hearing, meaning the child killer will remain at Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside on the grounds that he is mentally insane. The tribunal was the first time Brady has been seen in public since the 1980s, when he was taken back to Saddleworth Moor in the search for the bodies of two of his victims. It was also the first time he had spoken in public since being jailed for life at Chester Assizes in 1966. Brady and his partner, Myra Hindley, were convicted of luring children and teenagers to their deaths, with their victims sexually tortured before being buried on Saddleworth Moor. Hindley died in hospital,

still a prisoner, in November 2002 at the age of 60. But families of the victims have criticised the mental health tribunal, saying it gave Brady the opportunity to “grandstand”. The brother of victim Keith Bennett, whose body was never found, has said Brady was “nothing more than a serial killer of children, a paedophile, a coward and a self-pitying liar”. Alan Bennett said the only people that mattered to Brady was Brady himself and those he manipulates: “I have to say now that I am glad Brady did have his say, he tied his own defence team in knots, never gave a definitive answer under cross-examination and went on to show anybody interested that he is nothing more than a self-pitying liar.” In Brady’s letters he says Bennett’s body was buried in Yorkshire, rather than the Moors as originally thought. Martin Bottomley, head of Greater Manchester Police’s Cold Case Review Unit, said: “In the 1980s, Brady ‘con-

fessed’ to a number of other unrelated murders. All these claims were thoroughly investigated at that time and found to be completely unsubstantiated. GMP has been investigating Brady’s horrendous crimes and their aftermath for over 40 years now. A week hardly goes by when we do not receive some information which purports to lead us to Keith’s burial site. All of these claims are investigated and it remains our aim to find Keith for the sake of his surviving family members. Only one person knows where Keith is buried and he refuses to disclose that information, preferring to taunt Keith’s loved ones, assisted by those who seek to profit from his manipulative scheming.” The decision on Brady’s appeal was given by the threeman panel headed by Judge Robert Atherton, who heard the tribunal at Ashworth Hospital. Reasons for the decision will be given at a later date because of the length of the material the panel needs to consider.

Jammie Dodger Mad..... Many of my friends know that I have a special connection with Jammie Dodgers - I just simply cannot get enough of them! This week and next week and I am dedicating my page to these fantastic little biscuits and starting off by showing you firstly how to make the easiest jam to fill these wonderful creations with and then secondly how to make your very own Jammie Dodgers! If you make some don’t eat them all because next week I will be sharing some great recipe Ideas with you that incorporates these Jammie treats. Remember Jammie Dodgers have been filled in the past with chocolate, toffee and even custard and jam so why not fill them with your own preference?

60 Second Jam

This has to be one of the easiest methods of making jam. It is extremely quick but don’t be put off by an ingredient that you have possibly never heard of “Chia Seeds” as they are available at any good health food shop. This recipe is so simple it only requires three ingredients, and is great because it has no sugar or added or pectin.

Ingredients: 1 tbsp Chia Seeds 225g of your preferred Berries 1 tbsp clear honey Method: Here’s how it works! Place the three ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into a clean sterilised jar and leave in the fridge over-night. What could be easier?

Homemade Jammie Dodgers

Ingredients: 500g plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 225g caster sugar 250g unsalted butter, softened 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar 1 pinch salt 2 eggs 1 jar of your favourite jam Method: Work plain flour, baking powder, sugar, butter, vanilla sugar, salt and eggs into a smooth dough. Wrap and chill for 2 hours. Preheat oven to 200 C Roll dough out and cut out 5cm circles. Cut smaller circles out of the middle of half of the circles. Place on a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper and bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly golden. Spread jam over the whole circles while they’re still warm. Dust the rings with icing sugar if you like and place one on each whole circle covered with jam. Leave to cool completely.

Triumph Stag Kia pro Cee’d gT (1970 - 1977)

If one car sums up all that was good and bad about the British car industry, then it must be the Triumph stag. Where it was good, it was brilliant; and where it was bad - it was terrible. achingly desirable to look at, and with a sountrack to die for, the stag had the

world at its feet. and yet - it stumbled at the hurdles marked ‘development budget’ and ‘build quality.’ The good news today is that all the teething troubles are now well known and a large proportion of surviving Stags have been put together properly, with specialist knowledge. That leaves us free to enjoy the best bits of the Stag with-

out worrying (too much) about when the engine is going to grenade. It’s now a strong and refined grand tourer that’s simple and cheap to maintain and has one of the best exhaust notes this side of a street rod event. Common with a three-speed auto, but the manual/overdrive version is preferred, and not just because it uses less fuel.

IT’s rare you drive a car that actually makes people stop and stare unless it’s a supercar. Kia have managed to produce a car that does exactly that and match its good looks with something great to drive.

The car is the Pro_cee’d GT. Memorable for making sure you spell it correctly, Kia have produced a hatch, not a hot one, more a warm one that ticks all the boxes in terms of performance.

Kia pro_cee’d gT exterior looks

You can’t help but feel mesmerised by the ‘icecube’ daytime running lights, the black grille and lower air intake with a red trim line, which against the Fusion White metallic car we drove all make it look visually exciting. Its profile does make it look slightly Mercedes-Benz A-Class but going to the rear the dual sports exhausts and vertical reversing light and reflectors give it back a uniqueness. Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres give it added sportiness with red brake callipers.

James Bond’s Lotus esprit for Sale!

You will probably want to suddenly find many millions of pounds and an ingenious way of restraining any enthusiastic Bond fan, because I have some Very Good News: the aCTuaL underwater Lotus Esprit used in 007 flick The spy Who Loved Me is coming up for auction.

I’ll give all you Bond fan boys a moment to calm down. It is of course, my favourite Bond car, and for good reason too; the Esprit is one of the most recognisable Bond motors, second only to the DB5. This one is the actual car used solely for the underwater scenes, and is thus an elaborate submarine dressed up in that lovely Lotus body. Known as ‘wet nellie’ on the set, it was built by Perry Oceanographic in Florida and driven in the film by retired US Navy SEAL Don Griffin. And he had quite a task - it was powered by motorised propellers through levered steering mechanisms. At the time,

It is all kept very simple, a mixture of plastics and high-gloss black piano adorn the cabin. Leather and suede Recaro sports seats with red stitching give it a high quality feel. The red stitching also features on the steering wheel with a GT badge, gear shifter and door trims, although it’s a shame the red wasn’t used on the handbrake. Driving position is extremely comfortable and although the windows in the rear are quite small, visibility is fine. There is plenty of storage in the front, back, cup holders, glasses holder and USB and AUX points too for linking up your media. A date and time display is also useful, as after spending the weekend at the Le Mans 24 Hour race, and being up for most of it, I had no idea what day it was! The TFT LCD instrument display is a bit fussy with too much information to look at. Do we really need distracting by engine torque and turbo boost pressure figures?

Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World Editor Recommends Channel 4 - 22:00 - 00:10

Michael Cera (Juno, superbad) stars in this unconventionally structured, inventive and comic paean to the alternate universe of manga and computer gaming.

The movie is based on an acclaimed series of graphic novels by Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley, and is directed by British film-maker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Channel 4’s TV series Spaced), here making his Hollywood debut. Computer game fanatic Scott Pilgrim (Cera) is the bass player with Toronto band Sex Bob-omb. He shares his flat with his slightly-out-of-control

gay friend Wallace Wells (Kieran Culkin), and courts a little controversy by dating 17-year-old schoolgirl Knives Chau (Ellen Wong). However, theirs is a fairly platonic relationship; and one he’s prepared to ditch the moment he sets eyes on the woman (literally) of his dreams: Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). But if Scott wants to capture the impossibly cool New Yorker’s heart, he must first defeat her former lovers, the Seven Evil Exes, in video game end-levelstyle combat. So he embarks on a kinetic, romantic quest, largely conducted within his own head, replete with slapstick violence, impressive effects and witty retorts.

ItV 1 - 20:00 - 21:00 “It’s not enough just to be passionate about animals and to love them. You’ve actually got to almost look inside their head. anyone can dominate an animal through a cage but getting an animal to co-operate is extremely rewarding.” - zsL London zoo senior keeper Tony Cholerton. This three-part factual series for ITV give viewers exclusive and compelling behind-the-scenes access to the lives of the animals and staff at ZSL London Zoo. Produced by Wild Pictures, the series offers a privileged and unique insight into the at times emotionally intense stories of keepers and their 20,000 charges at the world’s oldest zoo at its base in Re-

45

gent’s Park and country estate at Whipsnade. In this third series, the zoo unveils its new £4 million tiger exhibit in London, and the pressure is on for keepers to get its endangered inhabitants, Sumatran tigers Jae Jae and Melati, to mate as well as to settle them in ahead of the Royal opening by the Duke of Edinburgh. The arrival of a new testosterone-filled male gorilla provides a challenge for mammal keeper Daniel Simmonds, who gave up a well-paid job in the city to work with the animals he loves. Seven-foot silverback Kumbuka has been brought in to breed with the three females at the zoo. A tender relationship between Kumbuka and female Mujuku soon develops.

Tour de france rooney future Crash Team Speculation fined

MaNChEsTEr united forward Wayne rooney was once again at the club’s Carrington training ground as speculation continues to mount about his future. New manager David Moyes is believed to want talks with the England international about his situation at the club.

a TEaM at the Tour De france has been fined 2,000 swiss francs (1,600 Euros) after its bus blocked the finish line to the opening stage, leading to a chaotic finale. Cyclists were left battered, bruised and bleeding after a huge crash which followed the orica-GreenEdge vehicle getting wedged under the finish line banner. Panicked officials had tried to free the bus after it got stuck just minutes before riders were to cross the line.

Organisers decided to move the finish line forward 3km so that riders would have a clear end to the stage, from Porto-Vecchio to Bastia on Corsica. But then they told riders they had restored the original route because the bus, which had apparently taken a wrong turn, had finally moved on. Moments after the announcement was relayed to cyclists, a huge crash happened in the suburbs in the town of Bastia, a few kilometres from the finish line. The smash brought down dozens of riders including pre-race favourite Alberto Contador. British cyclist Mark Cavendish saw his hopes of wearing the yellow jersey dashed as he was held up behind the crash, describing the situ-

ation as “carnage”. He said: “What caused the problems was the change to the finish. We were hearing in the radios with 5km to go the finish was in 2km. Then a kilometre later, it’s at the finish. It’s just carnage. I’m lucky I didn’t come down. I was behind it. My team-mates were a lot worse. Tony Martin’s in a bit of a state. I can count myself lucky.” Germany’s Martin, Cavendish’s team-mate at Omega Pharma-Quick Step, was among those who crashed and he was carried by stretcher into an ambulance. He suffered from concussion, a contusion on his left lung, widespread bruising, and a deep cut on his left elbow. Due to the confusion in the final moments of the race, all riders were awarded the same time for the stage. German Marcel Kittel got the yellow jersey after picking his way through the fallen riders. Organisers fined Orica-GreenEdge for “not respecting the timetable put in place for auxiliary team vehicles arriving at the stage finish”. A spokesman for the team earlier said on Twitter their bus driver had been following instructions when he ended up at the finish line. “Joking aside, our bus driver is devastated,” he wrote. “He’s an awesome guy and (unlike me) a great driver. He was being told to keep moving forward.”

The future of Rooney, who is reportedly of interest to Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, is high on Moyes agenda amid talk of him sorting out his back room staff. Former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claimed Rooney verbally requested a transfer in May but Rooney has yet to comment publicly on the speculation, amid reports he disputes Ferguson’s version of events. A previous transfer request in the autumn of 2010 ended with Rooney signing a new deal at Old Trafford and helping the club win the Premier League later that season. He

played a full part in another successful titlewinning campaign last term but was surprisingly left out of the starting line-up for a crucial Champions League match at home to Real Madrid. Ferguson’s former assistant Mike Phelan, who left United earlier this summer, has questioned whether the 27-year-old really wants to stay this time. He said: “Wayne is at the greatest club you can be at. Why would you want to jeopardise that, unless you want a fresh challenge and you feel that challenge isn’t being met at Manchester United?”

Suarez Bets are on for Club move

LIVErPooL striker Luis suarez has been subject of some surprise backing to join arsenal this summer, with various bookmakers reporting significant stakes.

Sky Bet won’t make the Gunners favourites to sign the striker as they attempt to make sense of the industry-wide run of bets, which prompted one major bookmaker to suspend betting on Wednesday evening. The Reds star is 3/1 to remain at Anfield this summer after declaring his interest in leaving the Premier League, with Real Madrid the favourites to sign the Uruguay international, who has stated his desire to join the Spanish giants. However, the Bernabeubased outfit have drifted out from odds-on to 6/4 with

Arsenal being backed in from 20/1 to 7/4. The development comes out of the blue with the Gunners expected to complete the signing of Gonzalo Higuain in the next few days, while it seems unlikely that Liverpool would sell to fellow Premier League club, especially considering Suarez’s reasons for wanting to leave. Sky Bet Football Trader Chris Spicer said: “We initially actually saw very little money for Suarez to join Arsenal and did not even consider them in

the betting until requested on Wednesday evening. However, some significant stakes have been seen across the industry, reportedly starting with some big bets from Spain, prompting us to move in line with other bookmakers. The bets have now started to come in but we are refraining from making Arsenal favourites though as it simply makes no sense given Suarez’s desire to leave England, while we recently suspended betting on Higuain arriving at the Emirates.”

Released In Error Man City Player Back Inside

A footballer who was released from prison by mistake in error on Monday is now back in custody. Former Manchester City youth player and England under-18 captain Courtney Meppen-Walter was freed from prison just a quarter of the way through his 16-month sentence.

The 20-year-old was sentenced in February to 16 months imprisonment following the death of a brother and sister after a road traffic collision in Manchester. He was visited by police on Monday night at his home address and, once officially informed of the mistake, he voluntarily returned to prison in Lancaster, where he will now serve the remainder of his sentence. Police Sergeant Danny Byrne said: “Officers visited Meppen-Walter’s address last night and returned him back to prison in Lancaster. We are

speaking to the family of the victims involved in this case to keep them updated with what has happened and our thoughts continue to be with them at this difficult time.” A Prison Service spokesman said: “Releases in error are very rare and we take any incident extremely seriously. An investigation will take place into the circumstances that led to this release.” Meppen-Walter wept at Manchester Crown Court when he was jailed in February. The sentencing judge said he would serve half his sentence in custody but could be released earlier on an electronic tag. The footballer was at the wheel of his grandfather’s “high-powered” Mercedes C220 saloon and doing nearly double the 30mph speed limit when he hit a Nissan Micra emerging from a side street. The Nissan driver, Kulwant Singh, 32, from Salford, and his sister, front-seat passenger Ravel Kaur, 37, from Cheetham Hill, were both killed.

Spain Will Be Back To Win World Cup “You can’t win every time,” so says Fernando Torres. The 29-year-old Chelsea forward and Spain international said in a post-match interview published Monday on FIFA’s web site. Torres described the defeat as a “blip against a team that played better than us” and said the loss would not change Spain’s approach in the future.

Spain did not need the loss as a wake-up call or to motivate the players, he said, but the match served as a reminder of how hard it will be to beat Brazil on their own soil next year, he said: “That said, in one year’s time we will be back here as world champions to defend what’s ours”. Spain have won an unprecedented three major tournaments in a row with two European titles and the World Cup, he added. “Next year we’re coming over here to make it four.” Brazil’s Fred sent his team to a 1-0 lead at the Maracana Stadium after only two minutes, a goal Torres described as key to the match: “We did not know whether to push forwards or hang back; we

More than 1,000 robots rolled onto a football pitch in the Netherlands to show off their sporting skills. The machines might not be able to bend the ball like Beckham, their attacks lack the pace of a Barcelona charge and they struggle to stay on their feet as much as some professional players do.

were in a bit of disarray,” he admitted. Brazil then went 2-0 just before half time with an unstoppable left-footer by Neymar. Two minutes after the restart Fred made it 3-0 with a low drive. “Things got worse, as we then missed a penalty and had a man sent off. It was one of those days when

nothing goes your way, right from the start,” Torres said. Asked if he’ll be hoping for revenge next year, the striker said: “Football is great for that, because you always get another chance. One year from now, hopefully we’ll be here and have a chance to make up for today, not necessarily to gain revenge on Brazil, but for our own sake.”

But, a wifi internet connection allows them to communicate with their team mates and their built-in celebrations make Peter Crouch look like an amateur, the former England player is famed for his robotic dance moves. Organisers of the RoboCup tournament hope a team of all-star androids will be able to defeat the human World Cup winners by 2050, although team members at the event in Eind-

hoven admit more training is needed. Marcell Missura, of the University of Bonn, said the robots’ game was “starting to look soccer”, but added: “To be honest, I think a three-year-old could win against any of the humanoid teams.” However, Dickens He, of the University of Pennsylvania, said: “There are no mistakes - a robot does what it is programmed to do.”

Hot foot In Las americas With The adidas fun run

Winner stijn fincioen

ryan Prout (3rd) stijn fincioen(1st) ayose Perez Tejera (2nd) soME were young, some were more mature, some did it for the challenge and some for pure pleasure but all the con-

testants in the adidas fun run did themselves proud in the red hot cauldron of Playa de Las americas. Even at 9am on Sunday

morning the digital displays were reading 28 degrees as contestants began to converge on CC Gala and the inflatable starting arch. Walking in I saw people limbering up along Avenida Rafael Puig, many were already in their shorts and clutching their race numbers. Going in the opposite direction quite a few were wobbling home after a heavy nights clubbing in the beating heart of the party zone. At the check in tables they picked up their clip on tags to record times as they burst over the finish line and some took an early dip into the iced buckets of water and fruit drinks, even the flowers were on ice and Canarian bananas were being chopped into bite size chunks of protein. The youngsters were first off with a 400 metre dash for groups of 6 to 11 year olds, 12 and 13 year olds added a return stretch, and the 14 and 15 year olds upped the tempo with 1,200 metres. There’s only so much limbering up you can do even with the Adidas Dream Girls as inspiration so the tide of senior runners was lapping at the tapes when they got the call to go. The circuit took them 8.5 kms around Avenida Rafael Puig and the seafront promenade before the home straight back to the start point.

First to breach the line was Stijn Fincioen from Bruges, Belgium in 27.09 minutes, second spot went to Ayose Perez Tejera from Guimar in 28.13, another great run from the man who won April’s 10.8 km half marathon in Las Galletas, and third was Ryan Prout from Chelmsford in 28.20 minutes. Big respect to all the 500 runners, that Sunday dinner was well earned. Two runners collapsed opposite Vivo Treasure Island and an ambulance was called to treat them, after being put onto saline drips the runners slowly recovered and were allowed to go home.

Aridane Sets His Sights On More CD Tenerife Goals

Stability in the summer, that’s not something we expect at CD Tenerife but with promotion assured at the earliest possible point and coach Alvaro Cervera secure in his role, work on bolstering the squad is making steady progress.

Negotiating from a position of strength the club has renewed deals for out of contract players like left back Raul Llorente, midfielder Cristo Martin and central defender Bruno. The big

concern was 27 goal striker Aridane, many clubs wanted to add his firepower but he has now signed on for another three seasons, he will find goals harder to come by in the Segunda Division but has earned his chance. New blood has been added with the emphasis on Segunda experience, right back Raul Camara from Xerez, wide player Oscar Rico from Cartegena, and midfielder Aitor Sanz the first to commit to CD Tenerife. All three are mid to late 20’s, good ages to add to the young local talent that burst through last season.

Pre season training starts on 15 July, an eternity away to us eager fans, with the annual warm up camp in La Palma a few days later. The Heliodoro turf gets its first use on 27 July with a friendly at home to Las Palmas (can there be such a thing against them) and Primera League Osasuna are the big name visitors on 2 August with another La Liga side Celta Vigo a stern test in the Teide Trophy in La Orotava on 10 August. Until then my Subbuteo players and old programmes will keep me vaguely sane.

Building A New Era At CD Marino

Ayoze A quiet revolution has taken place at CD Marino following their relegation back to the Tercera Division. It’s a clean sweep with Paco Santamaria elected unopposed as

Ayoze Placeres

the new President in place of Pepe Barrios who stepped down at the end of their brief adventure in Segunda B. In comes a new Director of Coaching, Julio Duran, and a new coach Sosa Espinel. Both Paco and Julio were already involved at the Las Americas club and the new coach, originally from Fuerteventura, has a proven track record with Canarian clubs at a similar level. Long term planning is the key for the new regime; Paco wants to have 70% of the first team to be home produced players within three seasons. There is plenty of young talent at the club but the flow to the senior squad

hasn’t always been smooth. The immediate challenge is to put together a strong senior side to be pushing for promotion. The new management hope to have most of the players from the strong second half of last season back on board, one of the keys could be signing Ayoze Placeres who has been released by CD Tenerife after being loaned to Marino. His arrival in January tightened up the leaky defence and at 22 years old he would be a great full time capture. There will be some familiar faces at rival local teams in the Tercera, Atletico Granadilla picked up a few ex Marino players last year and former coach Willy Barroso is taking charge at Las Zocas.

New Deals Basketball Stars, The Ball Is In Their Court

How do you follow such an impressive first season in Spain’s top division of basketball the ACB, for CB Canarias it’s a challenge they are happy to face up to as planning steps up a pace for the oncoming season.

Just missing out on the end of season play offs marked a strong season in front of regular 4,000 crowds in their La Laguna fortress the Pabellon Municipal Deportes. Four of the best players Ricardo Uriz, Fotio Lampropoulos, Blagota Sekulic, and Saul Blanco have been offered new contracts and their reply is awaited. New faces will be brought in to further the clubs progress but they have a strong base to build on and will be an attractive option for top players looking for a winning season.

NDY Murray admitted he played a part in his own downfall as he fell two sets behind before staging a grandstand comeback to beat fernando Verdasco at Wimbledon. The British No.1 put his fans through a nail biting session on Centre Court before recovering to advance to the last four at sW19 and a meeting with Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz.

The scot was guilty of costly errors early in the match, including serving a double-fault to surrender the first set. But he recovered to secure a fifth straight semi-final appearance at the tournament and, whilst acknowledging his own failings, paid tribute to his spanish opponent for making life so difficult: “he played extremely well in the first set and in the second set I made some poor choices and he served fantastically well,” Murray stated. “he is a very, very good player; he used to be at the top of the game. I did hold my nerve at the end of the match, didn’t make any bad choices like I did in the second. I played more solid and took my time when I had the chance. It’s not a warning because I know how good these players are, it’s everyone else who is saying that they aren’t. I can lose these matches if I don’t play my best. I tried incredibly hard, chased every single ball down from the first to the last and I came through an incredibly tough match. It could have gone the other way but I found a way through.” Will this be andy Murray’s Year?
